Hey LTT forum! I am a person looking to build a great custom computer and I need your guys' input and help. My budget is at max $2,600 and I currently have gone over several revisions of this build and I'm ready to show it to the community and see what you guys will suggest for me to change before I finally order this thing. Here is the PCPartPicker link, and I'll also just put the build in plain text below. To see what I plan on using the computer for, see below the build part list! Thanks much and I hope so discuss this topic with you! Hello there I am majoring in film & media productions and we work on both AVID and ADOBE softwares (media composer- premiere pro- after effects- etc) I am good in video editing but so bad in PC building so excuse my ignorance please I planned to build this PC to help me mainly on video/audio editing with some gaming on the side: Intel Core i7-5820K ZOTAC GeForce GTX 980 Ti AMP! Extreme MSI X99A SLI KRAIT EDITION CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB Corsair Hydro Series™ H100i GTX Extreme Performance SAMSUNG 850 EVO 2.5" 500GB CORSAIR AX series AX760 1-will this PC be good enough AVID? is this the best I can get without going with XEON and i7-5960x processors? or should I go with XEON or i7-5960x for AVID software??? 2-do I really need a workstation graphics card or the ZOTAC amp extreme will be good enough? 3- should I go with a prebuilt workstation such as the ones from dell and hp or a macpro? are they overpriced compared to their performance? all I need is a workstation/gaming console that can handle 4k raw footage easily and compatible with both AVID & ADOBE software... please help as this build is giving me a headache everyday ( anything you guys tell me would help

First Ever Build | Audio Production Workstation
djyoungins posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
1. Budget & Location $2000 USD but I'm trying to keep it pretty low because I need to buy another laptop now. 2. Aim The purpose of this build is to be a complete audio production workstation for producing and editing music and sound design projects using Ableton Live 9 (which supports multithreading), lots of VSTs, and lots of small-size wav samples. 3. Monitors I plan on running a single monitor for now with plans on a second monitor in the future with a minimum of 1080p. 4. Peripherals I will need to purchase a keyboard, not looking for anything special here. I'm probably just going to use some stock stuff I have laying around from 15 years ago. 5. Why are you upgrading? I'm upgrading because my 5 year old MBP is tapping at the bucket and I no longer have a "functional" machine. It's fan is running high all the time, I'm losing control over keyboard and trackpad, and the screen will go black and freeze up the machine until a hard restart. The main thing I'm worried about is how audio is streamed and written on hard drives. I've never used SSDs before but I hear that they way audio is handled can be pretty volatile to SSDs in terms of their longevity if I were to use it as a scratch disk. I'm thinking of using one SSD for OS and programs, the second for VSTs and sample library, the 1TB for backups and other stuff, and either the 2nd SSD or the HDD as my scratch disk depending on the new info I may be able to learn here. I'm also looking to make this build pretty silent which I hear the 212 EVO is not good at doing, in addition to certain PSUs which I have no idea how to pick out. The type of environment this computer is going to be in can reach temperatures of potentially 80 degrees F, so if you guys can point me in the direction of potentially better fans, I'm all for it! Also, I am looking to buy a hardcore GPU in the future so the PSU will need to reflect that potential power draw. I've spent 2 weeks of research (as it's all my computer is capable of doing now) and this is what I came up with so far: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($350.00 @ Amazon) CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($29.99 @ Directron) Motherboard: Asus Z170 PRO GAMING ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($162.99 @ Newegg) Memory: Kingston HyperX Fury Black 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory ($99.99 @ Amazon) Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($87.88 @ OutletPC) Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($87.88 @ OutletPC) Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($49.89 @ OutletPC) Case: Fractal Design Define R5 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case ($107.99 @ SuperBiiz) Power Supply: Thermaltake Toughpower 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($68.00 @ Newegg) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home Full - USB (32/64-bit) ($115.49 @ Adorama) Monitor: Acer H236HLbid 60Hz 23.0" Monitor ($119.99 @ Newegg) Total: $1280.09 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-10-02 04:04 EDT-0400 TLDR of stuff I'm worried about: 1) SSD as a scratch disk for audio, 2) Silent efficient fans for rooms that reach 80F degree temps, 3) Silent, efficient PSUs with room to handle hardcore GPU in the future. Thanks a bunch! Next thing I'll worry about is my VST compatibility. -
Hi folks, A friend of mine asked me to build a PC mainly for use of Pro Tools. He's looking for a small form factor desktop and to spend around $600CAD (more on this in a bit) primarily for music production for his band. This is sort of venturing into new territory for me, as I've never built anything in the Micro ATX or Mini ITX ranges and I'm having a hard time putting a list together with a good price/performance ratio. I don't need a GPU, in fact he needs a Firewire interface so if it comes to only having one PCI slot, it should be used with a Firewire card. This is also something I don't really know much about, except some light Googling revealed that Firewire appeared to be a more Mac-specific connector and that for around $13 I can get a PCIe card with Firewire ports on it. So, a few questions: 1) I don't know anything about Pro Tools. Is it (or can it be) CPU demanding, and is an i5 necessary like it says here for recording and mixing? If there's different versions of Pro Tools, I don't know yet what exactly he's using but I can find out and update this post if needed. Can someone recommend a good CPU and motherboard that offers good price/performance for this particular application? 2) Is using Firewire as simple as buying a PCIe card with the necessary ports and away you go, or are certain motherboards/BOISes better for this? 3) If someone wants to have a crack on making a full parts list, here's everything to consider: - Looking to spend around $600 CAD, but he can be flexible. I think he's not too sure about a starting point and just sort of threw that out there. Does not need a GPU. - Needs FIrewire ports. - 1TB of storage at least, up to 2TB would be preferred (disk storage is fine as I don't think even a small SSD can be squeezed out of such a tight budget). - Needs Win10. - Must be a very small form factor, like Mini ITX. - No peripherals or monitor needed. Will only be driving one monitor and an audio interface. The main things I need today is advice on a good CPU and motherboard and clarification concerning Firewire. Thanks in advance for any help, and a reminder that I do live in Canada and all parts need to be in CAD.

Hey guys, I need some suggestions for a rendering and video editing rig. I was going to spend the 8 grand on a souped up Mac Pro but I just can't do it knowing I could get a lot more bang for my buck building it myself. Its been about 5 years since I've built a PC so I don't know current components and deals. If you guys could have $7,500 for a video rendering build what would you get? I've got monitors, keyboards, etc so the budget is all for the tower. Thanks for your time and knowledge in advance, Alex

I have a lot of aspirations, a lot of things I want to do. I want to develop video games, I want to make movies, I want to be an artist, and I want to make music. Right now, I'm wanting to make the music. You see, I already have some basic knowledge of editing video, and I have gotten a really awesome idea for a video (it's awesome in my mind) where I would use dramatic music, like the one that's linked to ahead. There's a song (this song here) that I would like to use in this video because it's a perfect fit for the kind of video I want to do, but I won't use it because it's not mine, and I think it might be hard for me to get the proper permissions to use it. So, I want to create my own song that sounds like it and has the same feel, but isn't the same. I only have Logic Pro X and GarageBand at my disposal; I got Logic Pro X from a friend who already had it and I managed to shoehorn it onto my iMac. I have no money and cannot afford any other digital audio workstations. I just got my second paycheck from YouTube, and it's not enough to buy any software or hardware, and I get paid so sparsely that I don't want to blow it all at once on one thing. The thing is, I have no idea where to start. I've messed around with Logic Pro X and GarageBand for a long time, but I still don't know what I'm doing when it comes down to making music that doesn't sound stupid. I don't know how to get the right sounds that I want. I want to make a song like the one I linked to, but I just can't do it. As I said, I just don't know where to start or what to do, and the small start that I have, I can't get the right sound or feel. I've been able to copy melodies from other songs into Logic Pro X on my own, but it always sounds really dumb. I don't know where else I can post such a thread, but I need help. I want to learn how to use Logic Pro X, but every time I try making music in it, I always lose patience and give up hope and just stop trying. I want to go to college, and the college in my city known as SAIT has what I need so I can do what I want to do, but I can't start now. I want to start right this very instant, but I know that can't happen. Are there any tips that anyone could provide for me?

Hey guys. So, I see it's mostly all about gaming in here... BUT, I have a few questions about editing. What I'm going to have is a lot of sound input throudh a fairly large external soundcard (studio style), and I'm going to record & edit this. That means a fairly heavy sound editing software, and going for mostly 10-15+ tracks that are full of VST plugins etc. etc. What kind of specs would you recomend boosting for this kind of rig? Bw, Mr.Moseng

so as i'm getting into 3d video production i can't decide what to go for a new pc or a 5.1 mac pro what do you think would be better and it would be helpful if anyone could give me some good pc specs to think about on a budget of £2,300 - £2,700

ATH-M40X closed back headphones, Mackie CR3 3", two-way powered desktop monitor speakers, for everyone looking at getting into some desktop music production or just wanting to upgrade. Great deal for a great pair of headphones AND a pair of desktop monitors. I don't need these but I'm tempted just the same! (No, I'm not affiliated in any way. Just trying to share a smoking good deal!) http://www.adorama.com/MACR3PAIRB.html?emailprice=t&utm_term=wPtz%3AAUnyTpVSLkRzFRcj0v9UkVR-uwvPxrdXo0

I plan on building my first PC in the near future. As I produce music (on a semi-pro level) it should be capable of running programs like FL Studio and Cubase. There's a few parts I already selected, especially for the motherboard I would appreciate some tips! Because I'm on a budget of $700-800 I wont go for an i7 processor. I will be slightly overclocking (although I never done it before) the i5 for smooth performance. Parts I picked: Processor: i5-4690k Motherboard: ? (100% sure micro-ATX, but I am very confused on all the different chipsets, so suggestions are welcome) SSD: Crucial MX100 256gb RAM: Corsair Vengeance LP 16gb Power-supply: Corsair RM450 (but open for suggestions, quietness en effeciency is important for this build) Cooler: Scythe Mugen 4 Case: Fractal Design Mini (For mass storage I'll use my old HDD, no video-card is needed as I wont play games on this system) So especially for the motherboard (what chipsets and brands do you guys recommend?), and also for the power-supply I could use some tips and recomendations. Greetings from The Netherlands!

If the rumor mill about AMD Fury wasn't already working overtime (see Fury Pro Delay), a new rumor suggests that AMD may be limited to producing roughly 30,000 HBM Graphic Cards for 2015. The rumor suggests that a shortage in HBM memory (rumor upon rumor) is to blame. Not only would this look bad for AMD, but prices would easily skyrocket with a (perceived) limited supply. To put this number in perspective, AMD shipped 8,000 BF4 Edition 290X's alone at the launch of Hawaii, and Hawaii cards sold out within hours of launch. It's also said that Nvidia sold 1 million GM204 chips in 2.5 Months after launch (gtx 970, 980 with lots of buyers going SLI). Is this AMD trying to hype up their new cards and inflate the prices? Somehow I doubt this is a PR stunt. AMD have likely ironed out prices with vendors already, and vendors inflating prices does not mean more money for AMD. If this rumor is true, it may bite AMD in their rear. http://www.tweaktown.com/news/45835/amd-radeon-fury-rumored-limited-30-000-units-2015/index.html Update courtesy of @mattebad http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/384890-debunked-amd-fury-x-production-limited-to-30000-units-in-2015/?p=5198616 http://wccftech.com/amd-fury-30k-units-2015-air-liquid-cooling/

Hey guys/gals! With the Steam Sale nearly upon us, I was hoping to find a couple of games with a similar playstyle to Anno 2070 and Stronghold 2 with the production chains and what not. Does anyone know of any titles like this? I would prefer for the graphics to be on the upper end of quality but this isn't a must.

This PC will be used for Gaming, Video production, and Streaming. Some Cuda programming work may be included. This is what I'm ready to pull the trigger on. Having a friend who works at intel to buy me the SSD and CPU helps a ton because I'm getting a 5960x for the price of a 5930k. I do have a few questions/ need for feedback help. Are there good minimalistic cases out there that are good for watercooling? I intend to air cool this machine until I get a second Titan X at which point I will put the whole thing in a custom loop. I'm looking for an aesthetically pleasing case that requires minimal to no mod work for watercooling. I'm not a fan of huge drive cages. This is why I picked the Define S, but that's subject to change. I am sticking to a pure black/white build. Hints of color are okay, as I'm deciding to call this Project Noir. Also, I am deciding to go between either the pci-e or the 2.5 inch versions of the intel 750 ssd. I heard there are problems and bottlenecks going with the m.2/hyper kit route due to most m.2 slots using the PCH and bottlenecking the performance of the SSD? but does anyone know if that's the case on the X99-Deluxe? I am looking to get a simple but nice mechanical keyboard (after testing around, I seem to like Browns the most). I already have a nice gaming mouse. I am also looking to get a nice monitor. ultra-wide or 4k are nice options I'm considering, though Gsync seems also pretty awesome. Thoughts/recommendations? Please let me know if you have any concerns and issues. Thanks! Hey guys! A friend of mine asked me to build him the most powerful PC I could with around 1600 US$. He's an intense gamer, as well as a graphic desginer, using programs such as Photoshop, After Effects, 3D MAX, etc. I think this build pretty much covers everything, but wanted to ask the community before commiting to the purchase. The motherboard allows for two way SLI, and although it only has one graphics card, I want it to be easily upgradeable in the near future. Also, I'm not ordering a CPU cooler, because my friend is not into overclocking... Yet What do you think? Here's the link to PC Part Picker: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2wTjvK Thx in advance!

After seeing the iPhone bending video from Lewis Hilsenteger @ Unbox Therapy I thought of the LTT set that's being used in a lot of videos. The kitchen. The thought that popped in my mind was that I would share the Unbox Therapy video easily with family or non techy people. They look clean and professional. Don't get me wrong I love Linus' videos and I don't mind the kitchen backdrop but I think it hinders the quality feel of the videos. The video and production quality has been steadily going up but the kitchen feels like a non-optimal place to present these technology videos. Yes I know, a lot of techy people don't care about that stuff. I do, and I think it's something that would greatly improve the quality and shareability and thus growth of the channel. Thoughts? Comparison for reference Edit: I see some people choosing one or the other. My question is more what do you think about the kitchen set and what do you like/dislike about it? What would you do to improve it?

So, I am running a server for the forums, going to ask people to add it to the unofficial post on the forums I wanted so badly to present the server in a good and quality way, but never got the chance, I haven't got a filming program, and my laptop is really bad, so if anyone could make a good movie about my server with fair ammount of editing (dramatic music and slow motion), it would be appreciated he would get a big shout out in the server's rotation of messages, and people who enter the server now, could get a chance to get featured in a video IP: MC-LTT.TK Port: 30037 The server is proudly being hosted by Redportal, the respected member of the forums and a leader of a nice Minecraft hosting company: CloudMC The server never lags, Idea: The main play style of the server will be factions, as many users on the ltt fourms will prob like to group up in teams and then battle. You could also livestream scheduled faction battles. There are two small minigames at spawn that users can yolo in when they get board of factions or just want to 1v1 somone at. The minigame plugins I use don't kill when you lose, you just get a tp to somwhere therefore they will never lose any power from playing them. We also have Minigames We have One in the chamber (3 arenas) and TNT run (1 arena) And are in the process of adding survival games etc. The server has over 25 plugins to make your experience enjoyable and an awesome spawn, but I'm not going to leak anything, join, and until announcement, I'm not going to post anything more than this. Last week Project Ara had their MDC (Module Developers Conference) and showed off a lot of the hardware behind how Project Ara is going to work. http://www.tested.com/tech/smartphones/460765-tested-explains-how-googles-project-ara-smartphone-works/ Because Project Ara is designed to be a modular smartphone, Google does not want to control this market with an iron fist. They want to make it an open marketplace with open standards like the PC market. This MDC was to give hardware manufacturers the specifications on how to make modules for the phone. Therefore specs of size, connector location and type, how the blocks are held together, and even the manufacturing process that Google is trying to implement. All very exciting. (replacing a broken screen is as easy as yanking it off and buying a new one - while the phone's still turned on!) To start with, Google does indeed have a working prototype of the Ara Phone. So it is possible to work. The $50 (actually 'Sub $100') price tag "for what [Google] calls a basic "grey" phone includes $15 for the Endo [Chassis], $15 for the display, $5 for a battery, $10 for the main Application Processor module[AP] [small SSD for OS storage, CPU and RAM on one chip, where the entire chip is interchangeable but within you can't keep the cpu while changing the ram], and $5 for a Wi-Fi unit". This does aim at the cheap phone market, but you could chuck out all of that and build a baller enthusiasts phone with awesome hardware for $1500. Its possible. Parents buy kid a basic grey phone when they're 7, and every year get something new for it. Age 8, an HD display, age 9, better camera, age 10, more storage, etc. Or you could buy just an Endo Frame for really cheap and customize from there from a marketplace of different manufacturers. (The stock AP module. Other companies (like Intel or Nvidia) could make their own if they wanted to) The other slots can be filled with whatever you want, and are interchangeable. If you're a cloud user but 2 weeks battery life, you can ditch the hard drive and have all battery modules. You can have no battery if you're always charging it, and just get a wireless charging port and then awesome speakers and camera and such. Position of all the components can be wherever (with restrictions on physical size of course) as the connecting pins are the same on every slot. Another thing is that if you had a tiny camera thing, the manufacturer could put in lightweight spacer material to fill in the module (lightweight phone) or they could but in some storage to save all the photos to, depending on what they decided. Depth is not an issue so long as users are ok with chunkier phones, but that is a user decision. The connection is though a 10 pin port. where pins 1 and 2 are power and ground, and the other 8 pins are 2 way data transfer (or more power if its a battery) depending on what the hardware manufacturer decides. The bandwidth should keep the Ara phone moderately future proofed. The interface can handle 10gb/s for most modules, and 20gb/s on the larger ones. So even an ethernet port block could transmit at close to full speed for quite some time. This connection allows the modules to talk to each other through a very basic low level firmware, so communication between camera and gyroscope and microphone could be a thing for augmented reality creating devices for the "FPS game where you map out a location first" software thing Linus seems interested in. The Endo also contains a small battery designed for hot swapping. It can keep the stock AP block powered for a few minutes while swapping battery blocks out when one dies, giving this phone essentially unlimited battery life. That's built into the frame of the phone, on top of all the other batteries that could be chucked everywhere (around the screen, next to the camera, around a wifi block, essentially anywhere where the PCB and components of a block don't fill up the whole thing.) Hopefully the things that made the PC marketplace great a decade ago with all sorts of graphics cards and hard drives and CPUs for different audiences and prices will make this phone great too. Next thing was the attachment method. Many people have wondered whether blocks will just fall out if you're not careful, or whether they need screws or latches or are one way or something. Nope. They're held in place with "Electropermanent Magnets" (EPMs) Essentially electromagnets that don't loose their charge when powered off. I don;t know the strength of these magnets, or how you release them when you want to remove blocks (maybe they just make it stiff to release and you can tug it free), but they will hold stuff in place when you don't want it to move. Theft could be interesting though. Rather than stealing phones, people might start stealing blocks... (cross section of how a block will be built. all the layers for every block as well as the Endo Frame will make this phone thicker than current, but its a price to pay for modularity.) (conceptual idea for the 3D printer. Not yet built but should be fully built and tested by this time next year for full scale production) Finally, Google announced their production method for the Ara Phone. 3D Printing. Google has teamed up with 3D Systems and asked them to design a mass production 3D printer for the backs of modules, as well as potentially the entire module (now that we can 3D print PCBs and electronics) It will work by having a more or less stationary head while the work moves underneath along a conveyor belt, slowly being built as it goes along. The slow part of most 3D printers is that the head makes a line, it then lifts up and moves back to the start to make another line. If you could have heads always applying stuff, and have multiple heads applying different colours or shapes at the same time, you could 3D print anything REALLY FAST. This allows for customization of the back of the phone. Choose colour or even get a photo there. Depending on end cost and size, it also allows Google to have production anywhere in the world. If demand is high in Germany, just put a Printer in Germany to save on shipping. (examples of what designs you could have on your phone. The plastic backs are removable to put on other modules when you buy them.) Really exciting stuff. Even if Google decides to NOT build Ara Phones (which i doubt they will this far along) they still have all the tech they have now developed - the Electropermanent Magnets, the 10 pin interface with 10 gigabit transfer speeds as well as power, the 3D printer... Looking forward to April next year! =D I covered a week ago the differences in what Linus talked about in the WAN show with what's actually happening with Project Ara, thought i'd clear up some misinformation that was going around. We are a group of visual effects artists working in a home environment. We have four computers, two are running off wireless at the moment, we only have a 3-Ethernet-Port Modem/Router We will soon have for four 3TB drives and we will be adding another four drives at a later date (Not sure which brand or type to get yet) as we are working independently on the effects shots of an undisclosed film. We need a fast way to work off large files from a single location or group of HDDs, without copying anything anywhere, how would you do it? Is home sharing fast enough? Is a NAS fast enough to be worth the money? Would a Gigabit Switch lower network speeds enough to be noticeable? We also have a case that can fit eight 3.5" drives, and a GA-X58A-UD5 motherboard with 10 SATA ports (possible home server?). We are trying to avoid a big spend-up, but if we can't get the performance and stream-lined work flow that we need on a budget, we will fork out for a decent set-up.

So im doing an assignment on how robots are a big part in the computer chip production and im having a lot of fun . I just cant find when robots where first used in a manufacturing process. My guess is IBM when tube based systems where being replaced and the precision of a robot was needed. does anyone know for sure?
