  1. Hi all! I just bought a used RX 480 4GB (Sapphire Nitro, not Nitro+). I installed it last Sunday by doing this: I downloaded the latest RX 480 drivers from AMD's site, rebooted into safe mode, used DDU to uninstall all graphics drivers, shut down PC, replaced my GTX 750 TI with the RX 480 and connected my PSU's 6+2 pin PCIE connector. So I booted up my PC, everything was working great with no problems, I did some web browsing and a couple of Dota 2 games. I don't have direct access on my PC right now since I'm only home on weekends. My brother uses it on weekdays though, mostly just browsing, web development and Dota 2. So my brother told me that this Monday and Tuesday, the PC had no issues, but just this Wednesday, it had random black screens (literally, NOT "No Signal" black screens) that lasts for a second. It occurred about 5 times while playing Dota 2, and a few more afterwards while doing web development. He shut the PC down but later that night, when he played Dota 2 again, black screens occurred again about 5 times. Specs: Motherboard: Asrock H61M-DGS rev 2.0 CPU: Intel i5 3470 Memory: 8GB DDR3 PSU: Thermaltake Smart SE 530W GPU: Sapphire Nitro RX 480 4GB (was Palit GTX 750 TI) OS: Windows 10 x64 Some background on where I got the gpu from: A shop that sells used parts from Korea. I had the gpu shipped to me, they gave a 1 month warranty, so it can be replaced if proven faulty. It makes me wonder though why they were selling Sapphire Nitro for RX 480, and not Nitro+. I searched the net for Sapphire RX 480, and very rarely does Nitro (non plus) come up, at this point I'm starting to suspect that the gpus they are selling have been used in mining. I found out though, that the random black screens have been an issue with AMD gpus these past few years, so maybe the gpu I got isn't faulty after all and that my issue is maybe just the same as everyone else's. Still, I'm not really sure how to diagnose the real problem, I mean how do I tell if it's because of the gpu being faulty, something software related (drivers, win10), or something else entirely. Would a stress test like Furmark help determine if its a hardware issue? I can only list down things to do before I get home on Sunday. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)
  2. Well, this is a little surprising. https://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/3035266/amd-polaris-30-12nm-gpus-could-arrive-at-the-end-of-2018 There's actually a few separate rumors bundled into one, so here's what the rumors seem to be. 12nm-based Polaris is happening. No 12nm Vega, however Q4/Christmas release in 2018 GDDR6-based Navi products will be out before the HBM2 versions next year Within the actual post at Chiphell, it appears there is something with 16 Gb of HBM2 releasing in Q1 2019. I assume that's the 7nm Vega in some Pro Card variety. (If someone can read the Chinese, is AMD going to release the 7nm Vega into the high-end Gaming market?) Thoughts: There's a lot going on here. If this is true, it tells us a lot about the current state of the 7nm Fabs. Navi is going to be fabbed at GloFo, and we can probably expect it in Summer 2019. The Polaris refresh, maybe called "North Star" (Pcper is the only place I've seen the name), isn't the most shocking development. AMD will be releasing an updated Mobile/APU chip early in 2019 on the 12nm process. That means the Polaris/Vega tech has all been shrunk to that node shift, so the late development of this "slight more than a refresh" Refresh might have been a late decision by AMD. This probably means, from both camps, that 7nm GPUs are going to be pretty late next year. It also points to AMD actually expanding their product range once Navi is fully released. The RX 680 won't be their mid-range, but their upper mainstream GPUs, with Navi and Big Navi filling Midrange & High-end. (At least, that makes the most sense to me, given the current information.) The RX 600 series is also likely to be some version of the Vega M that showed up with the Intel NUCs. AMD's GPU IP is a little bit Frankenstein'd at the moment, so it's going to be interesting what updates they've put into North Star. If they can find ~15% improvement from the 580 to the 680, that would put the RX 680 as faster than the entire Fury line, the 1060 6 Gb and around 10% slower than the 1070. (Going off Computerbase.de's numbers.)
  3. Do you guys know where I could possibly get a water block for my XFX RX470 4GB Single Fan? I wanna do water-cool my AMD system because I'm seeing my GPU and CPU(Ryzen 1600) hitting high 70 during gaming and 80+ while stress testing and benchmarking any tips on where I should start? Here are my specs: Amd Ryzen 1600 Asus Prime B350 Plus Corsair Vengeance RGB 16gb ddr4 3000mhz XFX RX470 4gb single fan Triple X 1TB Seagate hdd Corsair Spec 02 Corsair VS550
  4. Hey guys, TL;DR Upgrading from a 280x. Playing on a 1080p144Hz monitor. New AAA titles. How much of an experience hit will I receive with an RX580 compared to Vega 56? Can afford both, just custom Vega cards are taking forever. I've currently got an XFX R9 280x paired with an R7 1700 @ 3.85GHz and I'm gaming on a 1080p 144hz freesync monitor. This has been serving me well for occasional comp CS:GO and some Just Cause 3, however I've refrained from playing some more intensive games like Doom, Fallout, Tomb Raider and Witcher, so I'd like an upgrade to my graphics card, and preferably an upgrade that will let me take advantage of my freesync monitor. Was going to originally go for an RX480/580, however I bought into the vega hype and from what I can tell it's not as bad as its made out to be, but the strix vega 56 is taking literally forever (meant to be out over 2 months ago, still no time estimate, and I suspect the 56 will take even longer than the 64 to come out). I've looked at plenty of benchmarks and there seems to be a fair gap, but exactly how noticeable and how much degradation to the gaming experience is there? For example: ROTTR - Vega 56 112FPS RX480 80FPS. Doom - Vega 56 181FPS RX580 138FPS. Witcher 3 - Vega 56 90FPS RX580 63FPS. How much of a hit to that gaming experience will that lower framerate induce, especially considering that I have a freesync monitor? Will lowering quality settings make much difference to the framerate, and how much does the image quality get reduced? This PC is mainly a workstation as I have no time to play games during the school term, I only really game during the holidays. I've spent ~A$3500 on the PC so far, making decisions such as 32GB of RAM and four SSDs. I can comfortably afford SLI Titan XPs, however I'm pretty careful with how I spend my money and make careful purchases. Another consideration is that at some point I might want to get into next gen VR when it's more reasonable. Will the minimum specs be increased (eg to a 1070 level instead of a 1060)?
  5. http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/samsung-preps-samsung-960-evo-m2-with-polaris-architecture.html 48-Layer TLC NAND Samsung is to release the new model in capacities of 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB. Performance wise you'll get a smile on your face, it is tagged with sequential transfer rates of up to 3000 MB/s reads, with up to 1150 MB/s writes; 360,000 IOPS 4K random-read, and up to 280,000 IOPS 4K random-write. The 960 EVO will become available likely next month in M.2 (NGFF-2280) and PCIe add-on card form-factors. These units obviously will require PCI-Express 3.0 with x4 lanes as the SSDs are using the the NVMe protocol. Hurray for cheaper high-capacity M.2 drives! And that performance is still nothing to sneeze at.
  6. Now I like AMD, GPU and CPU wise. I think they're very good at price for performance, I also think that Nvidia and Intel are better at doing things...well better. I've always felt that one of the worse things of AMD's products and probably from an overall marketing standpoint is their naming. It sounds stupid but as an average consumer you're going to be more attracted to purchasing a CPU based of Intel's "Skylake" processors than AMD's steamroller. (Although tbf the average consumer wont care so much about architectures and things so for simplicity's sake we'll do it this way) i7, i5, i3, pentium.etc also sounds a lot more simple and "technological" than the A series, Athlon and FX, and their graphics cards...wtf is Radeon, Nvidia's GeForce sounds amazing compared to Radeon. Anywho AMD's marketing seems to be getting better, I mean who wouldn't love the name Polaris vs Pascal, or Zen vs i series. Do you believe AMD is taking a stand and bumping up their marketing because they have more faith in their products, just bought a new a commercial branding team, or just want to sound cooler to sling the next load of disasters they fling at us after FX and RX480. Just a fun topic about the commercial side of things over specs and stuff. I'm definitely not super qualified to analyse this, just thought it would be fun to chat about
  7. I've been lurking a lot and it seems that the most knowledgeable users keep saying that Pascal is quite a mess on laptop and heats like an oven, so if you want to really take advantage of it you must buy more expensive and better cooled laptops than the old 9xxM series. I need a new laptop FOR GAMING USE and I've been patiently waiting for the GTX 1050 or the Polaris equivalent (my budget is around 1000€ incl. VAT, so ~800$, take the dell 7559 as reference), but at this point I'm asking you: Is it really worth it? Are there any rumors indicating that 1050 will also be so hot that they'll be more expensive than 960m ones? Anything from AMD? What do you think? Thank you
  8. Hey all, longtime lurker and need some help selecting an upgrade to my aging GTX 660. I have always wanted a GEFORCE side stickered card. I have been looking at the 1070 FE and 1060 FE but I also like the look of the RX480 Strix. I just cant decide which card to get as I plan on getting either a Vega or 1080TI (or maybe 1180 TI) when it comes out. Would you say I wait and still use my 660 for now, pick up maybe a 780/980 on the used marked for like 180/250 or get a bridge card? Thanks for your help, I keep stumping myself.
  9. In order to edit and render videos in 30FPS - 4K video, is it possible to build a rig at 570 $ excluding windows. That will get the Job done. Here is something I came up with just picking out items. http://pcpartpicker.com/list/d4XsXH The list goes very high up to $1457.84 Can you build a PC that can handle 4k Video edits at that price? And if not, what kind of PC build is reasonable for editing and rendering videos in 4 K. Thanks
  10. So I'm building my first pc and I'm wondering if I should get 2 RX 480s in crossfire or just get a single gtx 1080, I am also planning on buying a sycned monitor( g-sync or free-sync depending on the GPU) so which one should I get
  11. Buy the RX 480 Amazon: http://geni.us/2BeBSo AMD has done a LOT with Polaris' to make display tech even better. Let's check out a few of their new features!
  12. Okay, so this is mostly just me putting my thoughts down about the RX 480 launch, and how AMD actually did a decent job of marketing the product this time compared to the competition they were facing. I'm not wearing a red or green hat, so if you are an Nvidia or AMD fanboy, prepare to possibly be offended. People can agree or disagree. I'm not too worried, these are just my thoughts and not some indepth analysis. So even though I didn't care for it at all, the GTX 970 is the most popular discrete graphic card on steam right now (and has been forever it seems). That's amazing considering custom 970's were breaking past the $340 mark at launch, so they weren't cheap, although reference MSRP was $299. Before the 970 was the big seller, the 660 was the most popular card. The 660 was a $229 MSRP card at launch that matched a $350 HD7870. It's a no brainer that the $229 card beat the $350 card in sales. After all, both cards performed the same, despite the 2GB 660 having 1.5GB of fast memory and 0.5GB of slow memory. So how in the world did Nvidia manage to get so many people to buy 970's at the higher price point? It was pretty simple. They beat their 1000 dollar Kepler card from the previous generation for 1/3 the price. Suddenly 300-350 dollars seemed like a steal, and at less power draw too. Oddly enough, even after the 3.5GB fiasco, people still kept buying the 970. What are the odds two cards with 0.5GB of gimped memory are best sellers? Changing my focus to AMD - they marketed the RX 480 as being built like a 500 dollar card, with premium components, and having the performance in VR of a 500 dollar card. What this translated to in peoples minds was: "you are getting a 500 dollar card for 200 dollars." It was brilliant. Even on the LTT forums you had at least one thread with the title that said something like "RX 480 performs like a 500 dollar graphic card." For the first time in ages, AMD actually nailed the marketing and had people really hyped. Slides reading "2.8x Performance/Watt" had people believing. Even though 200 dollars is a lot of money for many people, AMD said "No, its cheap!" We're practically giving these away." But what were AMD up against? Nvidia were playing the same game again with the 1070, offering a card that beats the previous Generations $1000 card for less than half the price. No one can deny it was and still is a tempting offer. It's why I went for it. So AMD took a shot at the 1080 instead, drumming up the capabilities of DX12 multi-adapter, the amazing efficiency of Polaris, and AMD's renewed focus on software and crossfire support. At Computex 2016, AMD pitted two 480's against a single 1080 in a DX12 title, and beat the 1080. Of course, Ashes is an AMD title that is heavily tuned for GCN architecture, but the message still got out. Not only are you getting a "500 dollar card" for 200 dollars, but for 400 dollars you are getting the performance of a 700 dollar card. But looking at the RX 480 without the marketing filters, you can see why AMD had to come out swinging so strongly. The 480's power draw is close to a GTX 1080 and GTX 970. The benchmarks for the 480 are everywhere, and the custom 480's are arriving. What we do know is that the 480 is actually in the ballpark of the 390's performance. At 1080p the 480 is a few % ahead, while at 1440p the 390 edges out the 480. So who cares about the 390? The RX 480 is a 500 dollar card for 200-240 dollars right? Well... not exactly. the 390 at launch had an MSRP of $329, But custom 390's can currently be bought (brand new) for as low as $260 on newegg.com. So what does the 480 offer? well, better power draw than the 390 (but not 2.8x perf/watt). HDMI 2.0 as well. VR performance doesn't improve though. Regardless, there are large groups of people waiting for the custom 480's to launch, eager to get their hands on this 500 dollar card for 240 dollars (or probably more like 250-275 for custom 480's). Why? because AMD have actually done their marketing right this time, and they actually have some proof that DX12 and vulkan are not vaporware. Nvidia on the other hand seem to be sabotaging their own 1060 marketing: no SLI fingers, Founders Edition pricing, not squashing rumors about supply, declaring 980 performance when the math says 480 performance. I'm not saying Nvidia are giving this one to AMD, because you can bet the 1060 will still sell like hotcakes. SLI at that performance tier is not a common practice. But AMD really nailed it this time, despite the 480 not being a 500 dollar performer by any stretch of the imagination, not even close. AMD have cleverly disguised the 480 as being something much better than it actually is, and pulled in a lot of buyers - even many people who were currently using older nvidia cards. The mindshare is strong for the 480, no doubt about it... at least for now.
  13. Source: http://wccftech.com/amd-capsaicin-gdc-2016-live-webcast/ Well this will be interesting. The AMA from a little while back didn't give us much information, so this might be our chance to learn more about Polaris and the Furyx2. Hopefully we will learn some more about AMDs upcoming projects at GDC on March 14th. [UPDATE 3/11] AMD has just teased Polaris for the Capsaicin event. Source: http://wccftech.com/amd-give-sneak-peak-polaris-march-14-capsaicin-gdc-press-event/ As well: It seems the FuryX2 could be called the Radeon Duo Pro, but leaks like this have been false before, so take it with a grain of salt. I'm excited for this! Do you guys want me to just update this topic with info as it comes out or make a new topic?
  14. I know I already posted a topic on this. That thread will be the one about the event, and I will make this one the one about all the info that comes out. Chances are we will get a ton of info from Capsaicin so I didn't want to throw all the info onto that thread since that would make it the biggest thread ever that will take forever to read, so instead I am making this one so you won't need to read as much. In case you don't know what I am talking about: Here's a little refresher: AMD is hosting an event they call "capsaicin" at GDC (Game Developer's Conference) Monday March 14, 2016 (today as of March 14) at 4:00 P.M. They have already teased that they will be showing off Polaris there, and we could glean some purty cool info about Polaris from this It is highly rumored that AMD will launch the FuryX2, especially since both the vive and rift went on preorder recently and AMD said they were lining up the launch with the launch of VR headsets I think that's it (correct me if wrong) Also there have some rumors flying around that they will call the FuryX2 the Radeon Duo Pro, though I would take it with a grain of salt As well, this is pretty recent, but: http://wccftech.com/amd-polaris-10-gpu-vr-demo-gdc-2016/ It seems they will be presenting Polaris 10 EDIT: Forgot to mention they will be demoing it with a SteamVR benchmark. If they are doing that, it sounds to me like it will be a VR Ready part, and we know that Polaris 11>Polaris 10 and Polaris 11 will be about a 232 mm2 part, so if you ask me that sounds like some pretty amazing hardware. Only time will tell. [LAST UPDATE: March 14, 2016@5:14P.M. Pacific Time]I will be posting everything we learn here: AMD launched the dual Fiji monster, and it's called the radeon pro duo, and costs 1500 dollars! It is water cooled with a 120mm rad. It has 3 8pin pcie connectors and has 16 teraflops of compute power. That GPU demoed at CES was Polaris 10. Polaris 10 and 11 will be launching this year, and Vega will be coming next year with HBM2. In 2018 we will be getting Navi It is not certain what memory Polaris will get, though amd seemed to be saying Vega will be the first with hbm2 so it might have ggdr5/x or hbm- Amd has said Navi will have "next gen memory"... Something even more revolutionary than HBM? Sounds interesting..... As well, they said it will have a extremely scalable architecture... Crap now I'm gonna be on the hook for another two years
  15. So I'm looking to buy a new GPU in the near future and I really hoped for something from the Team Red side of things (Vulcan ho!) that would at least match a 1070 or even better. One can dream right? But as I was googling for an 'RX 490' all I could find were rumours and/or articles that stated that the RX480 was the best we were going to get for now (mostly just skipped through the search results to be fair), and that the 480 would be the top of the line as far as AMD will go with Polaris. So now my question is - Really? Is this all we get in terms of Polaris GPUs? Will we have to wait for the Vega architecture for something to compete with the likes of 1070s and 1080s (or by then 1170s, 1180s). Now I do know that there still are the Fury cards that hold up rather well-ish compared to Pascal, but I've been a bit weary of those since I heard a lot of people complain about coil whine across all three models. What do you guys think or even better, know? Is this all we're getting on the desktop side from Polaris?
  16. More details have emerged about the new AMD WattMan overclocking tool. Which is due to offer more features. Also in a exciting turn of events the leaked slides promise day one drivers! The leaked slides: Other than the awful name this seems like a positive change of pace from AMD. Source: http://www.overclock3d.net/articles/gpu_displays/amd_radeon_wattman_oc_app_details_leaked/1
  17. Source: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10465/amd-releases-statement-on-radeon-rx-480-power-consumption This is the statement sent to Anandtech: It seems that AMD is aware of the problem and is already working on a driver update to fix it. The problem, howrver, only seems to show itself when a 480 is being used on lower end mobos, but regardless it is still an issue that could both scare away consumers and potentially result in litigation against AMD. Whether or not this driver update will really fix it we don't know; we will be getting an update from AMD on the status of the driver on Tuesday and I will update this thread once that update is released by AMD. I will also update the thread once the driver is released. UPDATE: AMD has released their statement on the matter, and it basically is stating that we will get the driver on Thursday. Source: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10469/amds-tuesday-radeon-rx-480-update-new-driver-by-late-thursday AMD's official statement: We cannot be sure, but it sounds like AMDs solution is to move power draw off from the pcie slot and onto the 6 pin power connector. There wording isn't that clear, though, so that is only a guess. It could also possibly mean that AMD is only reducing pcie power and not increasing power draw from the 6 pin. We will have to wait until Thursday to see just what AMD meant. The fix I just detailed, however, is only one part of the driver update. That fix will be on my default-however, AMD will now also be offering a toggle (not on by default) that will reduce total power consumption of the card; presumably this would be used to keep the power draw below the 150 watt tdp. Since this mode would decrease total power consumption, this leads me to believe that the default mode would keep power draw the same and only shift power draw from the pcie slot of the 6 pin. However, as I said earlier this is not confirmed. I have a feeling the driver update will not impact performance and rather will just shift the load over to the 6 pin (which is capable of handling the extra current). Hopefully this driver update actually works. While some out there don't believe that the extra power draw is an issue, I believe it is, especially when it does in fact cause problems. There is evidence of this across the web-granted the issue mostly only occurs in budget mobos but this is a budget card after all, so it should work with budget mobos. I will be updating this thread (again) once the driver is released. UPDATE 2: Source: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-radeon-rx-480-polaris-power-fix,4668.html So AMD has at last released the driver fix they promised. AMDs fix is pretty simple-move the power draw from the pcie slot to the 6 pin. The "compatibility mode" that AMD is also adding with this driver is not enabled by default. What it does is it lowers the total power consumption of the card, albeit at a small loss of performance, in order to keep the card's power draw below the 150 watt tdp. So so does the driver actually work? Well it sure does! As you can see in the graph above, the main board power draw amounts to exactly 75 watts, the max for the PCI-SIG spec. 6 pin power is increased, but if you are using a 500 watt+ psu like AMD recommends there is no reason that this should cause concern. Now that AMD has gotten rid of this issue with the 480, it now is a card that can be recommended to anyond looking for a decent 200 dollar GPU. Problem fixed!
  18. Source: http://radeon.com/future-proof-pc-gaming-for-everyone/ So I was just randomly browsing the Radeon.com site created by AMD, and clicked on the part about Polaris. When I scrolled down to the bottom, I saw this: This means the rx 470 has a tdp of 110 watts. I also saw on toms hardware's review of the 480 that the 470 has 32 CUs which translates to 2048 SPs. Reducing to that amount of SPs and 7 gbps ram wouldn't cause the tdp to go down by that much, so this means the 470 probably has lower clock speeds than the 480. As well, there are some benchmarks here we can work with. If we look at firestrike, we see the 470 getting a score of 9090. I am assuming this is the graphics score, which would put the performance of the 470 in between that of the 380 and 380x. Not too bad, considering the tdp. I can't find many ashes benchmarks for mid range, but it seems that here the 470 performs around a 380x. Again, I couldn't find much for Hitman either but it seems the 470 performs around the 380x in this as well. Double again, I can't find much for overwatch but it seems to be around a 380x again. So it looks like the 470 will be quite a decent card. Judging by the tdp I'm guessing it will use the same pcb layout as the 480. I also do believe that when the 470 is overclocked, it can reach 90-95% of a 480s performance. The 480 may be a good deal, but I think the 470 will be a great one.
  19. Hi so since i cant decide on which... i found a sapphire nitro r9 390 on craigslist for $200 but i also see AMD has released their new RX 480 for $240 and i cant decide which is better. I dont care about power consumption or anything but if i were to overclock the r9 390 would i get the same performance as the RX 480. Thank you.
  20. I don't have a website source for this.... However, I did get an email from AMD regarding the stuff they talked about at Computex. And this was one part of that email: Or if you want the original without formatting removed: The most interesting part that I saw was this: Yup, that says that the rx 480 will deliver VR capability common in 500 dollar GPUs. what are the current 500 dollar GPUs? The gtx 980 and the r9 nano. Of course, this could possibly be an exaggeration, since AMD could have either used Ashes of the Singularity for their results (and in ashes the 980 performs a little lower than the r9 390) or perhaps Polaris has some extra VR features that make it a lot more powerful in VR (like the 1080). However, I doubt that they did it with Ashes, since then Polaris would be lower than the 390 in performance and we are all pretty sure the 480 is better than the 390. This means that either the 480 is about as powerful as the nano or it is very good at VR, both of which are good for us. I personally doubt it will reach all the way up to the nano, but if it is between the 390x and the nano (so around the 980) that would be great! I'm hoping the 480 does turn out to be around the 390x or even a little more powerful than that. That could perhaps even give the 1070 a little competition, as dual 480s would be just a little more than the 1070 and if a 480 is around a 390x it would very likely perform considerably better.
  21. Hi guys. With Computex and Pascal, revealing many things, has anyone seen anything about the next gen gaming laptops with pascal or polaris? I think there was an Asus one with a 1080gtx. I also read no more "m" Nvidia cards, whoohoo!
  22. Forbes: How AMD's 'The Uprising' Ad Campaign Will Incite A Radeon Rebellion Article excerpt: I think that AMD has the right approach, and it brings to my recollection some things I've had to say about AMD recently. One of those things is this: And another of those things has been noting that AMD pioneers a lot of good technology that becomes mainstream, in this thread, for example: GDDR HBM APUs GPU tessellation Mantle (-> Vulkan / DX12) multi-core x86 CPUs on-die memory controllers DisplayPort 64-bit x86 CPUs async-computation in GPUs .. and AMD is also committed to an open standard, which has allowed their tech to benefit the world, including their rival companies, like Intel, and Nvidia.
  23. AMD gives some details on their Polaris architecture. They announced that they are trying to support VR markets by releasing GPUs between the $100-300 dollar market. They are following up on trying to make VR for everyone. They are trying to reach VR to 100 million people in the next few years. For this, they announced the Polaris architecture. This was the Radeon RX 480. It seems to use the old referance design with the new Radeon logo. They confirmed it will cost $199 USD. They also say it is built like a $500 card. There is over 5 Teraflops, 36 CUs, 256gb memory bandwidth, 4/8 GB GDDR5, 256 but rate, 150w, HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.4 1.7x performance/watt with 14nm, and 2.8 with AMD technologies. Radeon software will use DX12, Vulkan, GPUOpen, and Crimson. It will have FreeSync, DX12 Async, and Multi-GPU support. It was said to run DOOM "Buttery smooth" and the video suggest it being able to run Ultra at 60fps. They also said in the video they said Polaris will have exclusive features. They said Ashes of singularity DX12 would run 58.7fps on a GTX 1080 and 2 480's would run at 62.5 fps at below $500 with the 1080 at $700 and the 480's are running at 51% and the 1080 at 98.7. They said it would be a huge performance boost for PC gaming and VR. So Polaris is much more then we expected. What do you guys think? Thanks! I think this is an amazing boost and I am extremely excited for AMD. They have a huge boost over Nvidia this gen and it's going to be amazing for them. #TeamRed. This is super important as this could effect everything Nvidia and AMD comes out with for a while! Edit: They are also feature Zen now so here are details on it. It is said to have high efficiency and has been worked on for ages. The CPU will be called Summit Ridge. Zen will have 40% IPC improvement with 8c/16 and AM4. This will be their mainstream desktop processor. Zen will also be scaled across multiple markets including Server, Notebook, and Embedded. Zen will be sampled in the next few weeks. Zen will be combined with Zen and forward GPU architectures. They say they are very confident in it and if the mainstream desktop is 8c/16t what is their high end? So in total, they have show RX GPU's, 7th gen APUs and ZEN. They have said Zen is going confidently hopefully meaning that with what they have said, it should be meeting or beating our expectations. Edit: LTT Video on the 480x Source:
  24. According to the wall street Journal, AMD will be selling the RX 480 for $199 USD, and availability should be at the end of June, 2016. This information has now been confirmed by Raja Koduri at AMD's Live Computex Presentation. The $199 price tag is said to be for the 4GB model. 8GB model is expected to be $229. Link http://www.wsj.com/articles/amd-prices-3-d-cards-to-spur-virtual-reality-market-1464725394 Though this is not 100% confirmed, we will likely find out later during AMD's Computex live stream. If the price tag is indeed 200 dollars for the 480, AMD would be looking to turn a profit by selling a lot of cards. Also worth noting is that the R9 380 launched with a price of $199, so for the tier the price would not be unprecedented. The 380x was $229. If the 480 has 390x-Fury Performance, this is possibly the biggest jump in performance we've seen in a long time at the mid-range tier, but only benchmarks will reveal where Polaris 10 sits.
  25. The Past: AMD's Computex event is happening today. It is already official that Bristol Ridge will be announced at the event, along with us getting some "Polaris updates." This probably means that for the first time since CES, we will be getting some information that is actually useful about Polaris. Unfortunately, this isn't a launch for Polaris but it's definitely almost as good as one! If we are very lucky, AMD may even talk about Vega too! And if we are very, very lucky maybe, just maybe, we will even get something about Zen! Chances are against that though, so don't count on it. I will be updating this thread with stuff we learn from the event while it's happening. If you hate my writing skillz, want some great pictures to stare at, or don't want to keep having to refresh the page, Anandtech will probably have a live blog on their site once the event is almost starting. I will post the link to that article once it appears here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10390/computex-2016-amd-press-conference-live-blog If you have no idea what I'm talking about, check out my earlier post about the event: Or, if you absolutely hate my writing skillz and are gonna get eye cancer trying to read my article, here's an article for you to read that won't give you eye cancer (I hope) : http://www.anandtech.com/show/10341/amd-announces-computex-2016-webcast The video of the stream is here: I will (luckily) be able to watch the event while it's happening. I will post all information that we learn right down here: [Last Updated: Past 7 P.M. Pacific Time]-Event has started! Also, here's a countdown @Energycore made! http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/generic?msg=AMD's Thingy&p0=241&year=2016&month=6&day=1&hour=10&min=0&sec=0So here is everything announced at the event: Polaris Source: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10389/amd-teases-radeon-rx-480-launching-june-29th-for-199 At the Computex event, Raja Koduri gave us some new info about Polaris. He talked about the new rx 480, which has been rumored about in the past few days. The rx 480 is based on Polaris 10 and contains 36 CUs presumably with 64 SPs per CU, giving a total of 2304 SPs. It has over 5 TFLOPs of compute power and is powered by a 256 bit memory bus with the memory clocked at 8 gbps, delivering 256 GB/S of memory bandwidth. AMD hasn't provided us with any other information, but based on the compute power it is probably between 1.08 ghz and 1.3 ghz. Information ROP count and TMU count was not given. The TDP is 150 watts. The card will be launching on June 29th for 199 dollars. Estimations put the performance around the 390/x level, though we can't be sure of anything as AMD has told us anything about IPC gains. However, it was said it will run DOOM very well on Vulkan. We only got one demo, which was of two rx 480s compared to a gtx 1080 in Ashes of the Singularity. The dual rx 480s beat out the 1080 by around 4 fps (around 58 fps vs 62). Raja stated that the 1080 was a 700 dollar card while the dual rx 480s was only 500. Because a 480 is only 200 dollars, my assumption is that this was a dual rx 480 card that was compared and that that will be launching a little after the rx 480. As well, it was said the 1080 was near 100% utilization, while the 480s only around 50%. I'm not sure what to take from this, but it obviously means more performance could be unlocked in the future through better drivers. This is interesting but also worrying for me. The card has the same TDP as the 1070, but presumably offers much lower performance judging from the price tag. This would, again, but Nvidia in a lead in the performance/watt game, again. However, this could be a very interesting card regardless. If it can deliver r9 fury level performance for only 200 dollars, I would find that to be a 1070 killer. It would offer 80-90% of the performance of the 1070 for only a little more than half the price. Two 480s could destroy the 1070. Polaris seems to be a little worse than Pascal from a performance/watt standpoint, but it might be a killer from the performance/dollar standpoint. We don't know how well it will overclock, though. If Polaris offers good overclocking, however, it may be a real killer. If not, I don't know. I guess we can wait until reviews come out to decided for certain. That's all for Polaris! Bristol Ridge Source: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10362/amd-7th-generation-apu-bristol-ridge-stoney-ridge-for-notebooks There's not much to say about Bristol Ridge. It's basically just Carrizo with DDR4 and slightly higher clock speeds. That's it. A few new HP and Dell laptops will be featuring it, but it really isn't that interesting IMO. This is only a mobile launch, so no desktop parts. Nothing about AM4. Still pretty crap in my opinion and I still think Zen is the only real interesting CPU architecture from AMD. And now for what you've all been waiting for..... ZEN!!! Source: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10391/amd-briefly-shows-off-zen-summit-ridge-silicon AMD has now officially confirmed Zen is working and being tested in labs. Along with that, AMD showed a video that was completely created, edited, and rendered on a Zen CPU. Along with that, Dr. Su took out an 8 core 16 thread Zen CPU. Unfortunately, we couldn't see the die as the heat spreader was over it, but it was still an interesting announcement. The 40% IPC is still confirmed, and Dr. Su continued to say how Zen will be scaled across all platforms-embedded, mobile, desktop, and server. Dr. Su again emphasized how Zen will be AMD's return the high end. Unfortunately, we didn't get any benchmarks or anything, but it is still quite interesting. However, AMD did mention they will begin sampling Zen in a few weeks, and wide sampling will commence in q3. Perhaps benchmarks soon.... I am definitely hoping that AMD will be able to make a comeback with Zen. The CPU market really needs some competition. At this point it is obvious Intel is taking advantage of the situation my pricing their products very high and slowing down improvements. Broadwell-E is 5-10% faster than Haswell-E.... and it's more expensive. That's not how the market should work. When a new generation of products comes out that's better than the old ones, it's supposed to replace them, not be priced higher than them. At this rate the cost of CPUs will only increase slowly but surely, which is why we need AMD to help sort this out. This event was quite interesting, even if we didn't learn that much. Hopefully we will get even more info on Polaris (maybe reviews) in the next few weeks!
