  1. Well, Computex has given Team Red their answer to Pascal. Polaris has its first card, the RX 480. It looks like it'll be comparable to an R9 390 or a GTX 980. Even though the 1070 seems to on par with the 980Ti or the Titan X, the 480 is almost half the price. In my opinion, AMD's done well here. Budget rigs will look to the 480 to deliver the power they'll want, which, as Raja says, "You won't need a $700 GPU to enjoy DOOM." We have yet to see how the card stacks up against the 1070, but I don't think they're trying to beat it. What are your guys' thoughts? I think this low end pitch is exactly what AMD needed to do, giving them a chunk of the market back after the sweeping hype for Pascal.
  2. AMD gives some details on their Polaris architecture. They announced that they are trying to support VR markets by releasing GPUs between the $100-300 dollar market. They are following up on trying to make VR for everyone. They are trying to reach VR to 100 million people in the next few years. For this, they announced the Polaris architecture. This was the Radeon RX 480. It seems to use the old referance design with the new Radeon logo. They confirmed it will cost $199 USD. They also say it is built like a $500 card. There is over 5 Teraflops, 36 CUs, 256gb memory bandwidth, 4/8 GB GDDR5, 256 but rate, 150w, HDMI 2.0 and DP 1.4 1.7x performance/watt with 14nm, and 2.8 with AMD technologies. Radeon software will use DX12, Vulkan, GPUOpen, and Crimson. It will have FreeSync, DX12 Async, and Multi-GPU support. It was said to run DOOM "Buttery smooth" and the video suggest it being able to run Ultra at 60fps. They also said in the video they said Polaris will have exclusive features. They said Ashes of singularity DX12 would run 58.7fps on a GTX 1080 and 2 480's would run at 62.5 fps at below $500 with the 1080 at $700 and the 480's are running at 51% and the 1080 at 98.7. They said it would be a huge performance boost for PC gaming and VR. So Polaris is much more then we expected. What do you guys think? Thanks! I think this is an amazing boost and I am extremely excited for AMD. They have a huge boost over Nvidia this gen and it's going to be amazing for them. #TeamRed. This is super important as this could effect everything Nvidia and AMD comes out with for a while! Edit: They are also feature Zen now so here are details on it. It is said to have high efficiency and has been worked on for ages. The CPU will be called Summit Ridge. Zen will have 40% IPC improvement with 8c/16 and AM4. This will be their mainstream desktop processor. Zen will also be scaled across multiple markets including Server, Notebook, and Embedded. Zen will be sampled in the next few weeks. Zen will be combined with Zen and forward GPU architectures. They say they are very confident in it and if the mainstream desktop is 8c/16t what is their high end? So in total, they have show RX GPU's, 7th gen APUs and ZEN. They have said Zen is going confidently hopefully meaning that with what they have said, it should be meeting or beating our expectations. Edit: LTT Video on the 480x Source:
  3. According to the wall street Journal, AMD will be selling the RX 480 for $199 USD, and availability should be at the end of June, 2016. This information has now been confirmed by Raja Koduri at AMD's Live Computex Presentation. The $199 price tag is said to be for the 4GB model. 8GB model is expected to be $229. Link http://www.wsj.com/articles/amd-prices-3-d-cards-to-spur-virtual-reality-market-1464725394 Though this is not 100% confirmed, we will likely find out later during AMD's Computex live stream. If the price tag is indeed 200 dollars for the 480, AMD would be looking to turn a profit by selling a lot of cards. Also worth noting is that the R9 380 launched with a price of $199, so for the tier the price would not be unprecedented. The 380x was $229. If the 480 has 390x-Fury Performance, this is possibly the biggest jump in performance we've seen in a long time at the mid-range tier, but only benchmarks will reveal where Polaris 10 sits.
  4. The Past: AMD's Computex event is happening today. It is already official that Bristol Ridge will be announced at the event, along with us getting some "Polaris updates." This probably means that for the first time since CES, we will be getting some information that is actually useful about Polaris. Unfortunately, this isn't a launch for Polaris but it's definitely almost as good as one! If we are very lucky, AMD may even talk about Vega too! And if we are very, very lucky maybe, just maybe, we will even get something about Zen! Chances are against that though, so don't count on it. I will be updating this thread with stuff we learn from the event while it's happening. If you hate my writing skillz, want some great pictures to stare at, or don't want to keep having to refresh the page, Anandtech will probably have a live blog on their site once the event is almost starting. I will post the link to that article once it appears here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10390/computex-2016-amd-press-conference-live-blog If you have no idea what I'm talking about, check out my earlier post about the event: Or, if you absolutely hate my writing skillz and are gonna get eye cancer trying to read my article, here's an article for you to read that won't give you eye cancer (I hope) : http://www.anandtech.com/show/10341/amd-announces-computex-2016-webcast The video of the stream is here: I will (luckily) be able to watch the event while it's happening. I will post all information that we learn right down here: [Last Updated: Past 7 P.M. Pacific Time]-Event has started! Also, here's a countdown @Energycore made! http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/generic?msg=AMD's Thingy&p0=241&year=2016&month=6&day=1&hour=10&min=0&sec=0So here is everything announced at the event: Polaris Source: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10389/amd-teases-radeon-rx-480-launching-june-29th-for-199 At the Computex event, Raja Koduri gave us some new info about Polaris. He talked about the new rx 480, which has been rumored about in the past few days. The rx 480 is based on Polaris 10 and contains 36 CUs presumably with 64 SPs per CU, giving a total of 2304 SPs. It has over 5 TFLOPs of compute power and is powered by a 256 bit memory bus with the memory clocked at 8 gbps, delivering 256 GB/S of memory bandwidth. AMD hasn't provided us with any other information, but based on the compute power it is probably between 1.08 ghz and 1.3 ghz. Information ROP count and TMU count was not given. The TDP is 150 watts. The card will be launching on June 29th for 199 dollars. Estimations put the performance around the 390/x level, though we can't be sure of anything as AMD has told us anything about IPC gains. However, it was said it will run DOOM very well on Vulkan. We only got one demo, which was of two rx 480s compared to a gtx 1080 in Ashes of the Singularity. The dual rx 480s beat out the 1080 by around 4 fps (around 58 fps vs 62). Raja stated that the 1080 was a 700 dollar card while the dual rx 480s was only 500. Because a 480 is only 200 dollars, my assumption is that this was a dual rx 480 card that was compared and that that will be launching a little after the rx 480. As well, it was said the 1080 was near 100% utilization, while the 480s only around 50%. I'm not sure what to take from this, but it obviously means more performance could be unlocked in the future through better drivers. This is interesting but also worrying for me. The card has the same TDP as the 1070, but presumably offers much lower performance judging from the price tag. This would, again, but Nvidia in a lead in the performance/watt game, again. However, this could be a very interesting card regardless. If it can deliver r9 fury level performance for only 200 dollars, I would find that to be a 1070 killer. It would offer 80-90% of the performance of the 1070 for only a little more than half the price. Two 480s could destroy the 1070. Polaris seems to be a little worse than Pascal from a performance/watt standpoint, but it might be a killer from the performance/dollar standpoint. We don't know how well it will overclock, though. If Polaris offers good overclocking, however, it may be a real killer. If not, I don't know. I guess we can wait until reviews come out to decided for certain. That's all for Polaris! Bristol Ridge Source: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10362/amd-7th-generation-apu-bristol-ridge-stoney-ridge-for-notebooks There's not much to say about Bristol Ridge. It's basically just Carrizo with DDR4 and slightly higher clock speeds. That's it. A few new HP and Dell laptops will be featuring it, but it really isn't that interesting IMO. This is only a mobile launch, so no desktop parts. Nothing about AM4. Still pretty crap in my opinion and I still think Zen is the only real interesting CPU architecture from AMD. And now for what you've all been waiting for..... ZEN!!! Source: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10391/amd-briefly-shows-off-zen-summit-ridge-silicon AMD has now officially confirmed Zen is working and being tested in labs. Along with that, AMD showed a video that was completely created, edited, and rendered on a Zen CPU. Along with that, Dr. Su took out an 8 core 16 thread Zen CPU. Unfortunately, we couldn't see the die as the heat spreader was over it, but it was still an interesting announcement. The 40% IPC is still confirmed, and Dr. Su continued to say how Zen will be scaled across all platforms-embedded, mobile, desktop, and server. Dr. Su again emphasized how Zen will be AMD's return the high end. Unfortunately, we didn't get any benchmarks or anything, but it is still quite interesting. However, AMD did mention they will begin sampling Zen in a few weeks, and wide sampling will commence in q3. Perhaps benchmarks soon.... I am definitely hoping that AMD will be able to make a comeback with Zen. The CPU market really needs some competition. At this point it is obvious Intel is taking advantage of the situation my pricing their products very high and slowing down improvements. Broadwell-E is 5-10% faster than Haswell-E.... and it's more expensive. That's not how the market should work. When a new generation of products comes out that's better than the old ones, it's supposed to replace them, not be priced higher than them. At this rate the cost of CPUs will only increase slowly but surely, which is why we need AMD to help sort this out. This event was quite interesting, even if we didn't learn that much. Hopefully we will get even more info on Polaris (maybe reviews) in the next few weeks!
  5. Hi everyone, I'm building a new system but I have not yet decided on a GPU. I was originally going to go GTX 1080 but I've been told that it's performance isn't great and I'd be better waiting for the TI next year however I have no PC at the moment due to selling my previous 290X. I have no preference on AMD/Nvidia as long as it works well but I'm wondering should I get the 1070 and wait for the ti next year, wait for polaris or just get the 1080. Because I'm building a glass watercooled PC my other concern is if I get the 1080TI next year it will be a pain to cut and redo all the tubing as it won't use the same waterblock as the 970 did with the 980ti. Any help is greatly appreciated
  6. I have a bit of a conundrum: Right now, I have a Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 driving triple 1080p monitors. I bought the card for $200 only slightly used and have been extremely happy with the performance, especially since it was only $200. Right now I have someone offering me $200 for the card, but Monday will be my last chance to take his offer. I'm torn between selling my 970 and buying a 1070 right now, primarily because of the Simultaneous Multi-Projection for my triple 1080p Monitors. But there's also the fact that one of my monitors is a completely different model, with IPS, shorter stand, and a slightly smaller screen. None of my monitors have Vesa mounts either, so the short one is propped up on Styrofoam so it's the correct height. All in all, it's a pretty miserable setup, but it works. My other option is to sell my 970 and screens once Polaris releases and get the 480X and a nice 1440p ultrawide. With all the rumors flying about, I'm not sure if Polaris is going to be worth it. I've also been a customer of Nvidia since the 600 series (630 > 750 ti > 970) and I'm finally fed up with all their Gimpworks, 3.5 Gb, etc, etc. crap. I'm also going to be heading to college this fall, so this will likely be my last chance at an upgrade. Normally I'd avoid making a thread like this and just wait it out until Polaris, but due to the time sensitive sale I need to decide now. I know there's not really a "correct" answer here, but what do you think I should do?
  7. Source: http://videocardz.com/60373/amd-polaris-tech-day-nda-ends-on-june-29th I had not heard of this, and I don't think any of you have either. I have only heard one mention of it, which was from Kyle from Awesomesauce Network who stated at the beginning of the last season of Booted that he is going to an AMD event in China before going to Computex. It seems that the Polaris NDA for reviewers will be ending on June 29th, and so most likely Polaris will be launched in July. This is quite a bit after Pascal, though AMD will probably have a full lineup including the low end, contrary to Nvidia who is only launching the 1070 and 1080. I'll keep this thread updated with new information if it does come out. This was a surprise and I had no idea about it before today, though I am doubtful we will learn too much considering there seem to be NDAs involved.
  8. EDIT: I do know that this Thread is a duplicate (in the sense that this news has already been posted), it's an honest mistake and I already reported my own thread with the request that it should be deleted. Discussion on my opinions at the bottom are still welcome though. Scheduled for: - 07:00 PM PST (May 31st) - 10:00 PM EDT (May 31st) - 02:00 AM UTC (June 1st) Livestream -> AMD’s Computex website ______________________________________________________________ - AMD To Deliver Polaris Announcement At Computex - Launch of 7th Generation AMD A-Series Processors [APU] - and More - WCCFtech.com - Anandtech.com - WCCFtech.com > Further info on AMD.com < NCIX made already an Episode with these news ______________________________________________________________ I'm myself only interested in the GPU news and not APU. I hope AMD will manage to catch up and compete to at least nVidias mid-range GPUs. Sure nVidia will still lead in the top segment with the recently announced GTX 1080, the coming GTX 1080 Ti and Titan based on Pascal but it's only a small percentage of costumers who are gonna invest in top-range GPUs. Most PC-Gamers aren't running 4K monitors to begin with. The mid-range market with focus on Dollar per FPS is much more interesting and with competition that's where capitalism really shines. Really wanna sew new Console-killer Builds that are also quiet and efficient. What are your expectations from Polaris, are you interested in the to-be-announced 7th Gen APUs at all or only wating for Zen? Are you waiting with an investment for Polaris to be released?
  9. So I have been wondering about peoples opinions on Pascal and Polaris. I think that the Pascal cards seem great with amazingly high clock speeds and the 1080 having 9 TFLOPS. Now Polaris most likely is not going to compete with these cards since AMD said that it will be focused on "mainstream" markets. So most likely lower end cards. So until Vega (basically high end Polaris with HBM2) AMD and Nvidia most likely will have almost no competition (maybe R9 490 and 1070?). But the interesting thing about the Polaris cards is that AMD has been saying that with Polaris they are going to bring VR to the mainstream. Does this mean affordable graphics cards with good VR performance. We might see at the event on 31. May at Computex. I will most likely update the post after that if there is anything relevant. What about the real competition? Will the Vega card be able to beat the Nvidia counterpart? Do you even think there is competition? So all we know (I didn't bother to do too much research since I doubt that there will be lots of info on this) is that Vega will have a really high performance per watt (Even higher than Polaris) and that it will feature HBM2. This is visible on the AMD GPU architecture roadmap for 2016. The leak website Videocardz suggests that it will have 16GB of VRAM and a 4096-bit memory bus. And over 700 GB/s of memory bandwidth. Also it would have a base clock of 1500 MHz That is pretty good for AMD because they usually have lower clock speeds than Nvidia and are still able to compete. These are all leaks and the card is supposed to launch in the end of 2016 / beginning of 2017 so most likely these are just rumors. Nvidia did not make it easy for AMD since the GTX 1080 is a really good card on paper and in benchmarks. Remember that all we have seen is the "Founders edition" card and that everything made by Nvidia partners will most likely be even better. I have no idea who is going to make the better card so please leave your opinion. ***LINKS*** AMD Computex event - http://www.amd.com/en-us/who-we-are/corporate-information/events/computex AMD R9 Fury Vega Videocardz - http://videocardz.com/amd/radeon-rx-400/radeon-r9-fury-vega AMD Polaris going to be "mainstream" - http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/04/amd-polaris-will-be-a-mainstream-gpu/ I would have links for the Nvidia stuff but everyone already knows the Pascal details and they are easy to find with a quick google search -JH275
  10. Source: http://wccftech.com/amd-announces-june-1st-press-conference-polaris-7th-gen-apus-computex-2016/ So it looks like AMD is definitely striking right back at Nvidia with this. Chances are we will be getting some real details about Polaris for the first time on June 1st. This year will definitely be an interesting one, and I'm curious to see how AMD will fight back this time. It doesn't seem thought that AMD will release Polaris here-only give us some details, as the title says "Polaris Updates," which implies information rather than a launch. It would make sense if AMD releases Polaris at E3, which is only two weeks after Computex. EDIT: For everyone arguing on blah blah Polaris is gonna only be 390x performance or blah blah Polaris is gonna compete with the GTX 1070 please just shut up. None of us have anything to base these claims off of. The only things we know for sure is Polaris 10 can run Hitman at 1440p 60 fps. Basically it. The 2304 SP rumors are probably true, but we don't know the final clock speeds yet, we don't know how much IPC has changed, and we don't know if there are parts that will go higher than that. So stop arguing about something we know nothing about. Everyone can argue all they want once AMD gives us some real benchmarks to work with but right now, there is so little information that arguing on this subject is pointless. There's my two cents.
  11. As the title says ... how much longer do I need to wait for GTX 1070 benchmarks and reviews? I know we have a few more specs now, but I'd like to see info on actual performance. I'm considering getting a 1070 after it comes out, pending reviews. I also plan to at least wait for info on Polaris before I decide what I'm buying. If I'd have to wait a fairly long time (like August) before I could actually get my paws on a ~$300 Polaris card, then I'll likely just go for the 1070. I would prefer something like an EVGA SC or FTW card, or I may go stock EVGA. I'd also consider a few other brands like Asus and Gigabyte as well. My budget would be around 300-400, depending on whether I go Polaris or Pascal. Performance across the board (not just games, but also video editing) is of course important, but thermals, noise, power is also just as important to me. (For example, I'd likely have gotten a GTX 970 over an R9 390.) I do some gaming (Source engine, starting to get into Rocket League a little, Descent Underground, also might want to try some newer games (but not $50+ titles, more like $10-20). One major use for my card, though, would be speeding up video editing and encoding, especially 4K. (I have the Panasonic FZ1000.) I'd also need to find better FOSS software, like Blender, Black Magic (or whatever it is), Lightworks, OpenShot, Shotcut, or something like that. (I don't plan on buying Premiere or Vegas - too much $ for something that I won't be charging money for the finished videos.) Transcoding a 15-minute 4K video to 1080p in AviDemux on my laptop (i3-6100, GTX 970M) took 3 hours, and I'd like to cut that time down to at least real time or faster if at all possible. (Also I don't think a Quadro card would be a good value proposition for me.) Another thing I'd really like to get into is video capture, so I can archive some of my family's (and friends') hundreds of old analog 8mm and VHS tapes, as well as some ancient reel-to-reel 8mm film tapes from the 1950s to 1970s or so. (Also I'd like to do audio capture from cassette, reel-to-reel and vinyl, but for that I'd need a decent sound card as I don't think my integrated sound is up to snuff. Also that'd be a topic for another thread, as well as finding good quality playback devices like Nakamichi (except I don't have $1k+ for a Dragon), Sony, Tascam, etc.) Back in August 1997, my family had an ATI All-In-Wonder card which had a GPU, TV Tuner AND Capture capability all on the same card. If I could get like a GTX 1070 with video capture, I'd be willing to consider upping my budget a little, but probably not more than $450-500 or so. Or, do I just need to look at a separate capture card? (I think an internal PCIe3.0 x8 or x16 card could be faster than USB 3.0, right?) I'd be upgrading from Intel HD 4600. (In my desktop that is - my laptop has the aforementioned 970M. I might consider upgrade that when the 1300 to 1500 series generation is out, unless there's a huge enough leap in price/performance/thermals/power to warrant a sooner upgrade.) I also have a 4790K, as well as a 1080p monitor currently - the Dell U2414H. I eventually plan to get a 4K monitor, but I'm waiting for the better quality ones of those (like the Dell P series, for example, or others, like with IPS or OLED, G-Sync, fully-adjustable stand, etc - ones that are currently >$700) to come down to like $250-350 or so without rebates. (Hopefully I'll be able to snag one around late 2017 to 2018 or so.) I plan on keeping the 1070 (or Polaris card) for quite a while. For example, if I'd previously had a discrete GPU ... I would probably upgrade from like a 9800 GT. I'd possibly be on the fence about upgrading a GTX 275, although power, thermals & noise might tip the balance in favor of upgrading. A GTX 460 or 470, or 560 Ti or 570, if I had those, I might keep for now. I don't upgrade with each new generation, I like to see a large performance leap when I upgrade. A few examples of generational leaps I like to see are the aforementioned HD 4600 -> GTX 1070, as well as my most recent CPU upgrade (AMD 64 x2 4000+ to i7-4790K), as well as my dad's 1st and 2nd CPUs (286-10 in January 1989, est. ~$300-500(?) to 486-120, $102 in October 1995). (I'd also like to see the performance per dollar improvement with succeeding generations that my dad's CPUs had.) If I had a crystal ball, I'd guess I'd be wanting to replace the 1070 around 2021 or 2022 or so, if not later. So ... any idea how much longer I need to wait for 1070 reviews? And will anyone review video editing/encoding performance using software that's ~$700-1000 cheaper than Premiere or Vegas? As for Polaris, I think there's an event planned for the end of May when AMD is supposed to unveil those cards, right? Oh, and where's the Preview Post option? Sometimes I want to see what my post will look like before I actually submit it. I know there's the drafts forum section, but I'm not sure how it works. I did post a draft there once, but there seems to be no option to move it to the appropriate forum. (Also that particular draft post I don't think I'll be reposting anyway, as some things have changed since I wrote it ... interestingly though it contains the same text as in the below spoiler.) Oh, and interestingly to me, when I clicked new topic, it remembered a draft of a post I was starting to make about GPUs, but never posted. I put spoiler tags around it so as not to flood this post with it, but if you want to see it... (I think I had typed it up like 2 or 3 months ago.) Some things in it (like looking at older used cards on ebay as a stop-gap, and significant driver issues with HD Graphics) don't really apply to my situation anymore.
  12. Source: http://experience.amd.com/amdwebinar?sf26238011=1 So it looks like AMD will be hosting a webinar on May 18th about Polaris! Perhaps we will finally get some real details about it now. As well, hopefully then they will announce the real release date of Polaris. It'll be May 18th at 10 A.M. EST. I'm excited to learn what they have in store as there have been many Polaris rumors flying around but none of them have been confirmed at all. EDIT: I'll be putting all the information (once the event starts) right here! I won't be on during the event but I'll add everything we learn after I can get on Well, we didn't really learn anything. Apparently the only new thing we learned is that AMD won't be restricting the clock speeds for AIB partners' versions of the card, so that the AIBs can trade efficiency for power. At least that means we may see slightly more powerful Polaris cards than normal, which is probably good!
  13. According to techpowerup, an industry insider told them the specs of the new AMD POLARIS GPUs. POLARIS 10 should feature a TDP of less than 150W, one 6-pin power, 32 compute units and a total performance of 5,5TFLOP (the core clock should be around 1,342 GHz, if there are 64 stream-processors per CU). POLARIS 11 should feature a TDP of 50w, PCI-E power only, 14 compute units and a total performance of 2,5TFLOP (and again, if there are 64 processors per CU, the core clock should be around 1,395GHz). Source: http://www.overclock3d.net/articles/gpu_displays/amd_polaris_10_and_polaris_11_specifications_leak/1 Edit Guys... apparently, videocardz says, that those cards are mobile parts, so desktop parts should be clocked even higher (looking back at the core difference of the hd 7970m and the hd 7870, the difference was around 150MHz). http://videocardz.com/59903/possible-polaris-10-and-polaris-11-specifications-emerge Desktop parts should look like this: R7 470/470x stream processors 896/1280. R9 480/480x stream processors 2048/2340 There was always a difference in core clock between the full gpu and the cut-down version (remember the hd 7970 and 7950?). A full POLARIS 10 GPU should perform like this (if it is clocked at 1,4GHz) 2x 2340x1,4= 6,552TFLOP.
  14. Based on what we have been seeing from nvidia so far do you think AMD has a chance? Will Polaris 11 stink but Polaris 10 will kick-ass? Will AMD only be kept alive by the fact that they will manufacture the GPU's for Apple and the APU's for consoles? When will they make a stand against the 1080? Do you think anyone will buy a Pro Duo now that 1080s are coming out and they are a third the price?
  15. So with the release of NVIDIA's 1080 and 1070 which are said to be faster than the Titan X, I'm actually really curious to know what AMD is gonna do about this. They haven't really said anything major lately other than their Polaris architecture. Have they teased any card recently? The Pro Duo is certainly not for us and nothing new. Just two Fury Xs stuck together. What do you guys think about this?
  16. Hello all! My birthday is today, and I am planning on finally buying myself the computer that I have wanted for almost 2 years! Since Pascal is promising and Polaris is soon to be announced, I am waiting to order the GPU until I can compare offerings from both nVidia and AMD. I'm going to be heading over to Micro Center on Saturday and ordering the rest of the parts either today or tomorrow so they ship by then. I do, however need a few opinions, so please let me know what you think! This is the parts that I am certain of: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($209.99 @ Micro Center) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170MX-Gaming 5 Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($144.99 @ Micro Center) Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($89.99 @ Micro Center) Case: Thermaltake Core V21 MicroATX Mini Tower Case ($39.99 @ Newegg) Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA GS 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($73.98 @ Newegg) Total: $558.94 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2016-05-10 09:48 EDT-0400 Are these solid parts, and is there anything I should change? On memory, I'm deciding between two similar kits of 16 GB DDR4 RAM: Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory ($59.99 @ Newegg) Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($69.99 @ Amazon) Are the extra 10 dollars worth getting slightly more performance, e.g. DDR4-2666 vs DDR4-3000? Similarly, I'm also deciding between two be quiet! CPU coolers: CPU Cooler: be quiet! Shadow Rock 2 51.4 CFM Rifle Bearing CPU Cooler ($49.90 @ Newegg) CPU Cooler: be quiet! PURE ROCK 51.7 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($29.90 @ Newegg) The Shadow Rock 2 is 20 dollars more, but will the overclocking performance be worth the price? For airflow, I plan on replacing the single included 200mm with 3 of these: Case Fan: be quiet! Pure Wings 2 61.2 CFM 140mm Fan ($11.90 @ Newegg) I will use 2 for intake and 1 for exhaust to maintain positive pressure. Finally, I am looking into a monitor, and I really don't know what to look for. I see one that's inexpensive and highly rated: Monitor: HP 22cwa 60Hz 21.5" Monitor ($99.99 @ Amazon) Is this a good deal, or are there better monitors with similar build quality? Thank you for the input on my build!
  17. Hey guys... im planning on building a polaris/pascal system... but im not gonna fall for that 'founders edition' bs... i know polaris isnt even announced yet.. but i just want to know a rough estimate of how long it might take for evga/asus etc to come out with their own versions of pascal... once nvidia launches it ofc... \TIA
  18. According to Thai site ZoLKoRn AMD is scheduled to unveil Polaris 10 and 11 at a special press conference in Macau between the 26th and 29th of this month in which a lot of guests have been invited to cover the event. It is unknown why they didn't choose to unveil Polaris at Computex on the 31st but the sooner the better. Source is in Thai: http://www.zolkorn.com/news/amd-will-be-unveiled-polaris-gpu-later-this-month/
  19. PLEASE NOTE that this thread's intention is not to start a flame war nor bash on people decisions. It is meant purely as a way for me/ us to discuss the upcoming release of pascal and what it means for the people with a fairly new GPU. Hello LTT forum! Today I would like to discuss a very exciting matter, and that is the upcoming release of pascal. But not only that I would also like to converse with the people whom bought a high end card not long ago. So what do you think about pascal? Will it be as big of a performance gain as the hype says or will it fly down towards the ground like an arrow to the knee of an adventurer? Personally I think it won't be ''double the performance of the titan x'' as some people seem the believe around here I think they misstok it for the performance in vr but I'm not sure but nevertheless I am hyped as I will be buying a 1080 as soon as it is available in Sweden. (Currently got a r7 360 matched with a 5960x processor) So I do really hope it will be a good card. Do any of y'all like the new reference design cooler and SLI bridge? I think it looks badass but it doesn't really match the shape and feel of my soft tubing. (picture for those of you who haven't seen it yet) But what I really do wonder is what do you think, the people who own a 980ti or titan x, will you buy the new 1080/ 1070 or will you never upgrade or perhaps wait until a newer version like maybe a 1080 ti will release? (even though we can't know for sure if it will or when it will). And when did you buy your card? was it a month ago you posted a thread in ''new builds and planning'' asking for recommendations about what processor or gpu you should buy and was it then you ignored the people saying ''wait for pascal, it's gonna be much better''? Or was it a year ago you bought your card? Please tell me, I'm really curios about hearing you LTT members telling me when or why you bought your card and if you are going to buy pascal or if you think pascal sucks and should die. (lol) Anyways thanks for reading and have a good day(night for me lel)
  20. as you may already know, nvidia just announced the 1000 series of gpus with the pascal gpu core. they seem pretty beast. but don't forget amd. they had demos of polaris running a long time ago. as far as i'm aware, nvidia has not showed any running pascal cards. does this mean that amd is farther in development in their next gen cores, or is nvidia just keeping everything more under wraps until launch? what do you think? amd polaris seems to be targeting the mid range market, and seems like it will be very affordable (as amd commonly is), but i think nvidia has the most horsepower while also carrying a heavy pricetag. both amd and nvidia seem to have much more power effecient cores. so i say it's a toss up which one actually has more perf/watt until benchmarks for both nvidia and amd cards come out. which are you more excited for? personally i'm rooting for amd. it's been a long time since there was a fair fight between amd/nvidia. i think the best example of this was way back with the 7970 ghz edition vs a gtx 680. both cards were trading blows and each had pros and cons to the other. you could argue that the 780 and 290x were like this as well, but the 780 ti kinda put that argument to rest. enough of me rambling on. i'd like to know what you think?
  21. Title. My build currently has a AMD Athlon X4 860k and a MSI R9 270 2GB. The CPU is quad-core clocked at 3.7Ghz. I'm considering upgrading my graphics card to the upcoming R9 400 series card and I want a second opinion if the CPU would bottleneck it. Doesn't seem like it would to me but confirmation would help. Simple yes or no would suffice.
  22. So I was looking to get the GTX 970 mini Gigabyte but with Polaris and Pascal around the corner (June-ish)I've decided to wait. However, with specs leaks of the GTX 1070 and 1080 not using HBM 2.0 but rather GDDR5 or GDDR5X, do you guys think that we will see a mitx sized GPU at launch? Something that is similar in size as the mini GTX 970 and 960s from the like of Asus and gigabyte or the R9 Nano?
  23. I am going to buy a new Polaris gpu when they come out and was going to sell my gtx 950 but i am seeing some stuff about multi gpu setups being easier with DX12. My question is if the 950 is worth keeping to use alongside my new polaris card in the future. I'm not sure because it is a dx 11 card mainlly or if I could at least utilize the extra vram. Any help would be much appreciated. thanks
  24. source: http://arstechnica.co.uk/gadgets/2016/04/amd-focusing-on-vr-mid-range-polaris/ AMD's Roy Taylor said: that gamble is going to hurt AMD the problem with VR is that it's not cheap - both HTC's Vive and FaceBook's Rift have some hefty prices attached to their HMDs the 2nd problem is that you need quite a beefy PC to run VR - what perf/cost do you need to strike in terms of a video card to make it more affordable?! right now, a R9 290X is ~350$ a R9 390X is ~450$ a GTX970 is ~ 320$ theoretically, you can take the 290X design, die shrink it to 14nm and have (again .. theoretically) 2 times the number of GPUs / wafer - but how much lower is AMD going to sell these? the "rumored" price for Polaris 10 is ~300$ and deliver near GTX980Ti performance!? come on! the only viable VR alternative that has the potential to kickstart the VR is SONY, with their PS4 system - the rumored price (I think it was actually confirmed, not sure) of the system was ~800$ including the HMD and this is where AMD is going - the new PS4 UHD "4K", with upgraded APU that will most likely include a Polaris 10 or 11 GPU and the forecast for VR adoption was cut by 20% after the troublesome Rift and Vive launches: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2016-04-20-superdata-downgrades-vr-forecast-again gambling on VR .. not a good deal, not right now anyways --- AMD's notion that nVdia is abandoning VR is just dogshit - https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2016/04/27/virtual-reality-conference/ nVidia understood that, for now, VR is not consumer ready
  25. Hello all i wanted to post here with the same stupid questions as everyone else currently BestBuy is selling the reference GTX 970 for only 304.99USD i have been using an r9 280x for the past year but sadly my cooler broke and the fans died so now its on life support zip tied to case fans and honestly its not doing everything i expect it to do now and even sagging yikes! Locally they seem to be going fast most likely a re seller but i was wondering if that deal seemed good enough to not wait for polaris or pascal since i don't really want to go without using my pc to its max potential and honestly i feel like having a gtx 970 just makes it more likely to have support until steam hardware surveys at least don't show it as the most popular. i would have bought a second hand 970 but everyone on Craigslist was flaky so id rather get my however long warranty out of the box. Thanks i appreciate your opinions and factual statments
