The original post is from Android authority. Two pirates operated their own sites to distribute pirated Apps back in 2012 have pleaded guilty to criminal counts of copyright infringement and conspiracy to commit it. I wonder how they came up with the $17M figure? Did they count the number of downloads and multiply it by the cost of each of those pirated apps? In any case, I guess it's still justice, though it was at a snails pace that they will soon be the first to be prosecuted for Pirating Android Apps.

So the legendary piracy group 3DM announced that they will quit cracking games and said that cracked games have NO future whatsoever it got me thinking. 90 percent of the games that i ever played are pirated (i feel horrible for it) but i had an excuse since i live in a country (Tunisia) where there is NO paypal and NO other ways for online payment let alone a videogame retailer, it's nearly impossible to find genuine copies of games, and even if you found one it would be extremely overpriced, here's an example most AAA games cost 60$ at launch to put it in perspective it would cost me around 300$ relative to the average monthly income here. So tell me what do you guys think should i just quit gaming or should i stick to cracked games until they are gone and do you think pirating games is ethical or not in my case. FUN FACT: Linus himself used to pirate games way back in his teenage years.

I feel like tanking about this. So, people and enterprises constantly complain about piracy, but now that I look at it, how amazing is it? I started thinking about this when I found out you can't do remote desktop on home versions of (at least) windows 10. The Irony is that I actually bought windows 8.1 because I didn't know better, really more than anything. I was basically having driver problems related to windows updates(which I didn't know could be solved at the time on a cracked version of windows), and now that I want to do stuff like work with domains and remote desktopping, I have to actually get the not so legit pro version and virtually throw 100€ that were so hard to get onto the street. And that seriously pisses me off mainly because I can't afford the upgrade. Besides that, in my country(portugal), when netflix and such came along not too long ago, that was when most of torrent websites started getting blocked by the ISPs. So, I got myself and 3 of my class mates a netflix account, and you know what? I'ts actually pretty nice. Except for the fact that the reason I got it for was so I could watch series's new episodes as they came out (cw is also blocked in my country), but guess what! Torrents of the episodes come out faster than they do on netflix. Availability is also a joke when you're looking to buy stuff. Most not really famous movies out there are not for sale anywhere and there is no way I'm buying any physical copies or getting scammed. And some of them would basically be 10/10 dead if it wasn't for websites like piratebay which is honestly amazing. You are basically helping to keep a movie you like alive by seeding it and you can go to jail for that. What are your points of view/opinions on this subject?

Hello guys, I am currently in a very bad situation where my manager wants me to build a computer that would have windows 10 pro on it then would be running 4 Hyper-V virtual machine that would all be running a pirated version of windows 10 pro. That computer would be used in a business environment at one of our client's location. They want me to do that because it's the only way he found to stay competitive against our competitor. Would anyone be able to link me to the official documentation that I could show to my manager's boss about the consequences if they were to get caught? (or if I was to anonymously notice Microsoft of this fact myself) Please note that I have been asked to pirate the windows operating system on multiple machines for other clients in the past as well, though I have done so under pressure of immediate termination of my employment. Cheers.

The life of a pirate just got a bit less rewarding as a poor guy found out when his Bitcoins got stolen. A Reddit user called Arkanoah asked for help in regards to 4.88 Bitcoins (about US$1,773) disappearing from his wallet. This all happened on the 11th of November. Yep, the day that Fallout 4 was released and the date Arkanoah downloaded a pirated copy of the game. Although not 100% sure, it does seem like his pirated copy did cost him way more than the actual game. Buyers beware? Perhaps pirates beware is a better fit. I wanna know your opinion about game piracy, which was briefly discussed by Luke and Linus on the Jan 15th WAN show. I'm from India and if you take a look at the state of my currency (INR), you will understand why most people here who know how to pirate games do it. I agree that by pirating games, we are doing a BIG disservice to the development studios who make them and that's important (I know because I'm a game developer myself), but every AAA title these days costing along the lines of 60 USD, it's very difficult to actually buy these games on Steam or Origin or whatever other platform. To put it in perspective, as of today (Jan 16 2016 in India), 60 USD is about 4070 INR. Paying that kind of sum is not easy, especially as India is a pre-dominantly poor country (even though it's listed as a developing nation). Physical discs do cost less, but there have been instances where I have bought a retail copy of a game just to find that it gives me some sort of read error (a good example would be the 7-disc box for GTA 5 which is currently sitting on a shelf gathering dust and which I blew 3000 INR on). So I wanna know, what do you guys think about it?

Sauce: http://dancingastronaut.com/2016/01/pirate-bay-co-founder-developed-music-industry-doomsday-device-show-absurdity-piracy-law My opinion: I think this does a good job of showing how bs the music industry's claims of how piracy is hurting them is. The industry itself is moving towards streaming and away from purchasing singles and albums. Hopefully this can get people to realize the bs that the record labels are pushing out and start to see piracy as a result of poor distribution methods rather than a crime that robs artists of their money.

Apparently, one particular kind of DRM protection persists in giving more and more headaches to game crackers. If you wonder why there's still no working pirated release of Just Cause 3, look no further: Source: https://torrentfreak.com/no-more-pirate-games-in-two-years-group-warns-160106/

A lot of people use some kind of Ad blocking software on their web browsers to block annoying ads. But shouldn't blocking Ads be consider pirating content? When a game developer makes a game, time and money goes into making original content that they expect to make profit off of. When somebody pirates a game, they receive the content the developer created without the developer making any money When a website developer makes a website, they make money off of selling ad space. Their goal may be to make profit off of just the ads, or just to hope that their ad revenue will be enough to pay for server hosting and other expenses. When somebody visits a page with adblock, they receive the content of the website without the developer making any money What is the bad part about internet piracy? That you don't have to pay, or that the content creator is not making money off of their work? It's illegal to download paid music, games, and movies and piracy is often compared to stealing. The big problem is that somebody worked hard to create something, released it with the intention of making some amount of money in return for the content they created, and people are receiving this content without the creator making money. But still Adblock isn't considered piracy, and is even allowed by Google and Mozilla? But isn't Adblock be worse than piracy? Pirating content that costs money is one thing, but to deny money to content creators that were actually providing you with their content with no cost to you? You don't even have to pay. They will make money even if you ignore the advertisements on their websites Share your thoughts on this below, I want to know what you guys think

I have pirated a few things in my past and ever since I built my PC I have mostly stopped. However I recently pirated windows 10 so I was wondering what everyone's opinions are on the matter. Is it acceptable if it's a triple A game and not if its indie? I would like to hear everyone opinion. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/95599-linus-tech-tips-forum-code-of-conduct/

So, it would seem that the long time arguments made by consumers, as to how to kill piracy, are slowly being proven right. That argument being that "piracy results from geo-locking, market segmentation, and general unavailability", and that companies could make more money, if they would just stop being so belligerent, and give people easy access to the content they want to buy. Source: http://www.geeksnack.com/2015/05/30/netflix-inadvertently-killing-off-pirates-and-bittorent/ Alternate source: http://www.delhidailynews.com/news/Netflix-inadvertently-killing-off-pirates--Bittorent-1432990988/ I have to admit, I'm eager to see what kind if ridiculous response some companies will come up with in light of this information. Personally I have to agree with the article. While Piracy IS immoral, it can be better fought with easy, convenient access, rather than obstructive geo-locking, and timed releases for different countries just so companies can charge more money in that country because "it just came out". What's more interesting to me, is that some companies like HBO, seem to be waking up and realizing that box top set television is a doomed industry, and that people don't want to pay a ridiculous price for a package that includes channels they don't watch or have any interest in. Now, before all you master PC gamers get mad and start giving Harmonix crap over not respecting your gaming needs, lets understand why Rock Band 4 isn't coming out on PC and whether the reasons make logical sense. See, Rock Band includes the same music you are free to pirate already, only it contains multiple tracks. For each instrument. For vocals. Basically the entire song before someone presses "export" and creates the .wav master file from which every other version is spawned. So that can be a big deal to the rights holders (aka the music industry) because they clearly don't want what amounts to studio quality files being thrown out. They have a point, rarely do you see studio quality leaks (much less multiple track versions of songs) because that stuff just doesn't happen all the time. I can think of only one song in recent memory that had even a .wav leak. Does this mean Rock Band 4 will never come out? Who knows. Maybe they will figure out some crafty DRM that secures the songs or otherwise learn to deal with the environment and just release it. But there it is. Want to grove on to music in a game that is arguably based on a fun series? Go get a platform that isn't a PC. And before you all shit over Harmonix, this was a record label(s) decision. Harmonix doesn't get to say no to what they want when they need songs for their game. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2015/06/threat-of-music-piracy-one-reason-rock-band-4-isnt-coming-to-pc-for-now/

Another day, another Google automatic system does something funny. image source: tumblr What happens is that by doing so, subscribers are directly targeted with "settlements" fees. Source: http://torrentfreak.com/google-fiber-sends-automated-piracy-fines-to-subscribers-150520/ Ugh... piracy is a problem in many cases, but forwarding DMCA take downs directly to customers kind of violates the privacy that you trust into your ISP. Its funny tho, it seams that using google automatic system's to target its customers is a common thing. Look at YouTube DMCA take down requests that are being abused, what stops the same thing happening here as well?

Netflix isn't just worried about HBO — it's worried about pirates, too. In a letter to shareholders yesterday, Netflix says that piracy is one of its "biggest competitors," and notably, it specifically points to one piracy service that's caught its attention: Popcorn Time. Popcorn Time's app is meant to make pirating a movie as easy as streaming one on Netflix. The app allows you to browse through an iTunes-like catalog of movies and TV shows by their posters, select one for more information, and then start streaming it after a short buffering period. It's so streamlined that anyone should be able to just pick it up and start watching. What Popcorn Time actually is is a pretty face for downloading torrents, an activity that's typically going to be illegal when you're looking for major films and TV shows. This form of piracy is far from a new phenomenon, but it makes torrenting a lot more accessible than it's traditionally been — and that gives Netflix reason to worry. In particular, Netflix points to a Google Trends graph comparing the popularity of searches for Netflix, HBO, and Popcorn Time in the Netherlands. The graph shows the popularity of Popcorn Time rising sharply over the past six months, such that it's now on par with Netflix and far above HBO. Netflix calls the data "sobering." Of course, this is only in the Netherlands, which appears to be an outlier. Looking at global data, the graph is far different, with Netflix soaring far, far above Popcorn Time and HBO. Still, it's a sign that Popcorn Time is gaining prominence. Netflix is a great piracy deterrent because it's cheap and easy — but Popcorn Time is now making piracy easy, too. For Netflix, that's cause for concern. @69lover : ninja'd Source: http://torrentfreak.com/canadian-isps-vpns-now-alert-pirating-customers-150102/ Under the new law Internet providers are required to forward copyright notices they receive from rightsholders to their customers. Providers who do not comply, including VPN services, face damages up to $10,000. Among the most prominent concerns are the so-called settlement schemes where copyright holders ask pirating subscribers to pay a fee. These have become relatively common in the U.S. and are now expected to expand into Canada. The new notice-and-notice system also has a great impact on VPN providers. The new law requires them to identify pirating customers so they can forward the infringement notices. This mandatory data retention is expected to lead to a customer exodus as it makes it impossible for providers to guarantee people’s anonymity, a key feature of any VPN service. Many VPN providers assign shared IP-addresses to their customers, so even if they wanted to there is no option to accurately identify a copyright infringer. For these companies the only option will be to shut down, or move the company outside of Canada.

Irony alert: Leaked show is about stamping out cyber crime A new primetime CSI show about cyber crime is to debut Wednesday on CBS, but it's already making its way on to pirate sites. Featuring Patricia Arquette, CSI: Cyber is about the Cyber Crime Division of the FBI that tackles illicit online behavior. Ironically, the first episode was available on Tuesday, a full day ahead of its scheduled premiere. "The leaked footage comes from a high quality copy and doesn’t have any visible watermarks," according to TorrentFreak. The show will still air at 10pm ET this evening on CBS, and the network has made a small preview available online. The five sneak peeks (all numbered like software iterations—1.0, 2.0, and so on) don't give us much hope for Blackhat-level dedication to realism, however. In the premiere, a kidnapping sets up Arquette and partner James Van Der Beek for one of the CSI franchise's patented crime scene walkthroughs. And if unfamiliar with any of the now four CSI variants, even the most routine of procedures quickly becomes dramatic. "What are you guys doing?""Confiscating your devices. Faraday bags block the kidnappers from communicating with your devices. The second we zip 'em up it's like locking them in a lead vault." Cue the zipping noises and the cool visual effect representing digital lockdown; place it all over a pulsating soundtrack beat. If only this debuted a few weeks before our March Hacker Madness poll, maybe we'd have a new entrant Source : http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2015/03/new-csi-cyber-show-debuts-on-piracy-sites-ahead-of-broadcast/ CSI CSI Miami CSI Ny CSI Cyber NCIS NCIS Las Vegas NCIS New Orleans OMG stop already

However, numbers indicate that there was no real difference before and after it was raided by Swedish authorities. Apparently it will take far more than just taking The Pirate Bay offline to stop pirates.

Now playing on Bit torrent 'politics - performed by developers' News via tech crunch BitTorrent is opening its paygate-based business model to all artists and others who would like to use BitTorrent as a platform to distribute their content. currently only a couple of major artist have decided to jump in on the whole peer to peer music share solution Since Bittorent is up against competitions like amazon music itunes & spotify which pays top rated artist handsomely , Bittorrent has decided that it will give artists 90% of the revenue from its services, Essentially they are giving artists a 90% cut of all sales around a model that features a flexible model: you can take some content for free, get some behind a paywall; or see the content move to paywall after a certain number of visits for example. Taylor Swift sparked debate over the state of music in recent weeks, the value of a stream, the value of a record. The value of art shouldn’t be up for debate. It should be up to artists,” said Matt Mason, chief content officer for BitTorrent Other sales and streaming platforms have come under attack for failing to disclose the deals they’ve made with labels. While Spotify has claimed to pay 70% of their revenue to rightsholders, public statements by artists, including Taylor Swift indicate that little of that money is actually making it back to the people making the songs Artist who are new to this needs to contact bittorent via given link & Applying is pretty straightforward afterwards New artists will be asked to provide contact details, as well as some basic information about the project they’d like to publish, and that’s all.they are set to create a bundle & released or published via bittorrent servers Kewl news, really profitable for new & emerging artist that don't need to rely on topr 3 recording industry to provide them with a quarter of their paycheck to get put on mainstream What are your thoughts on this? post your rants & troll feature down below,,, Source: http://techcrunch.com/2014/11/17/bittorrent-bundles-paygate/

A brilliantly made knock of the HTC One: The Cubot One: A brilliantly made HTC One knockoff Judging from the pictures I probably would have a hard time telling the real from the fake and quite honestly I am intrigued if this phone is "good enough" and how many people will settle into buying this. I would have to admit if I haven't bought a phone already I might give this a try just to see if it as "smooth" as the article says it is and would it really bother me.
