  1. So I'm thinking of getting the best performance out of my ssd on old computers and noticed I could plug in a sata ssd to a mini pcie slot and wanted to know if it would make a difference in performance or even work
  2. Hello Guys. I need some help. I recently bought a PCie SSD. The XPG GAMMIX S5 256GB. But I've had trouble getting my motherboard to recognize it. I have a Maximus VII Gene motherboard. In theory the SSD should work well. In the mobo specs it says: 1 x M.2 Socket 3,, with M Key, type 2260/2280 storage devices support (PCIE mode). The SSD is an M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3X4 First I change the PCie mode to M.2 When I restarted the PC, the BIOS showed me the SSD information. When starting Windows the SSD was not displayed. I Restar again and change it to AUTO and when starting Windows, the SSD already appeared. I Restart the PC a second time and the SSD no longer appeared. Neither in the BIOS. I have noticed this. If I turn off the PC and turn it on in a few minutes later, the SSD appears. But I feel that it is not running as it should. If I move any BIOS settings (anything), upon restarting the PC, the SSD is no longer displayed anywhere. I have to turn it off and on in 5 minutes for it to appear and work. As long as I don't move anything from the BIOS, I can restart and shutdown the PC normally, when I return to Windows the SSD is there. I share a snapshot of the performance it currently has. I know there is something wrong, because the SSD specifications say that it has readings of 2100MB/s and writes of 1200MB/s. In the performance tests, the SSD do not reach those speeds. I have removed CSM support and it doesn't change anything. Fun fact, when I switched from PCie M.2 to AUTO, and turned off the PC, when I started Windows, I did a test of copying a 4GB file and it was copied in 15 seconds. When i restarted Windows, the SSD was no longer displayed. When I got it to appear, I did the same test and the performance declined. I have RAID0 of two CORSAIR LX SSD's and they work faster than the M.2. Could it be the SATA configuration I have? I have SATA mode in RAID, not in AHCI. Is this what is affecting me? Please. Could you help me if I am doing something wrong? Is the M.2 not compatible with my MOBO? Do I need to activate something else? Which M.2 SSD PCIe express would you recommend for my Maximus VII Gene? Thanks in advance.
  3. Hey Guys Dao here, I was thinking about buying the asus hyper m.2 x16 card and using it with my ASUS ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming. I did get it right that this is only Usable for Mainboards with X299 Chipset? What would be an Alternative if so? Greetings and have a nice Day
  4. Me and a few friends are saving up for a pc that we can all play on at once... We are going to use these gpus; Titan V, Titan XP, GTX 1080 Ti, and a GT-1030 for UnRaid. they will run windows 10 pro with 1TB total ram three 4TB pcie SSDs 8 SATA 4TB SSDs one 2TB M.2 SSD for the UnRaid install. there will also be 6 Seagate Iron Wolf 12TB 7200 rpm HDDs there will be 2 pcie 1x to 4 pcie 16x bitcoin mining risers to help with allocating a 10gb 2 port rj45 ethernet card, a Asus - Xonar DGX 24-bit 96 KHz Sound Card, the selected gpu, pcie ssds, the 8 port sata pcie cards and a 7 port usb 3.0 card for each of us. 5. hello, i bought a virident flashmax m1400 of ebay last week assuming that it would work on windows 7 because it works on windows server2008 r2 which is built very simularely. i cant seem to find a driver that works though. has anyone experience with that kind of stuff? thx in advance for your answers.
  6. Hello All, I'm in the process of configuring a custom built brand new Hewlett-Packard Z840 Workstation for personal use. While I'm done with the rest of the configuration I'm curious to know about the performance effects in terms of read/write speeds of RAID 1 vs a single drive. I will be using a PCIe SSD (Z Turbo Gen 2) as a boot drive. I'm pretty confused between the RAID 1 vs single drive. I would need some help deciding between the two(RAID1 vs Single drive). I prefer redundancy but not at the cost of severe performance downgrades. Using RAID 10 is not an option for now due to budget constraints, although may be a possibility in the future. I'll be using the workstation for Read/Write intensive applications such as ANSYS, hence a high data throughput is a huge advantage along with powerful processors, GPU and RAM. How much of a performance downgrade is observed in case of a RAID 1 vs Single drive? For your ref I'm posting the complete configuration decided by me below: 2 X Intel Xeon E5-2687W v4 3.0 GHz 10 core CPU 128 GB(8X16GB) DDR4 - 2400MHz ECC LR RAM NVIDIA Quadro P5000 16 GB Graphics Card 1400W PSU 2X512GB Z Turbo Gen 2 PCIe SSD in RAID 1(Boot Drives) Windows 10 Pro x64 Your valuable insights are highly appreciated. Thanks a lot. Regards
  7. i bought myself a samsung 960 evo even though my motherboard doesn't have m.2 slot and just got an adapter for it. i tried going into bios and my pcie-m.2 ssd was nowhere to be found, but booting an existing windows installation (on an older sata ssd, which is way too small for me) and voila, it's there and it's detected. hence i assume there would be no issue installing windows on this drive. the issue that i'm assuming i will run into (i can't test it right now, really looking forward to testing everything out) is that i can't boot from this drive since my mobo wouldn't report that it exists. what i'm thinking though is that it potentially would be possible to leave my previous windows install be and tell my mobo to boot from this ssd (ocz, older ssd) only to go to mbr and tell mbr to boot from the newer ssd (samsung) since i have noticed that mbr is capable of choosing different OSes if it can detect them. i'm concerned that i may not be able to tell mbr on my ocz that i have another OS installed on the samsung pcie-connected ssd. to sum it all up: i want to install windows on a pcie ssd and boot from it. my mobo doesn't seem to support it. that's why i want my mobo to boot from an ssd that it supports. when it boots windows, it goes through mbr OS selection screen and i choose my pcie ssd installation. questionable life choices and logic aside, would that work? i have i7-2600 on asus p8p67 rev3.1 and i have not updated my bios since i bought it in 2011. nevertheless it supports an 8tb drive. my ssds are samsung 960 evo and ocz vertex3. i will be happy to provide more info and if noone can actually answer the question i would like to know if people are curious whether that whole scheme would work when i actually try it out. thanks for reading and happy holidays! :)
  8. Greetings. I just purchased an Intel 600P NVMe M.2 PCI-e SSD Trying to put it in my Laptop (MSI GE62 2QD 081US) And the BIOS cannot detect the SSD, Meanwhile, Windows 10 Home (64-bit) is detecting it just fine. I can read from and write to the SSD, no problem. The laptop has a 5th Gen Intel Processor (Broadwell) i7-5700HQ Which I am not sure if supports NVMe The motherboard supports PCI-e SSD (PCI-e 2.0 x4) (it should be compatible with PCI-e 3.0 x4)(I am not worried about the bottle neck.) I updated the BIOS, which still indicates the PCI-e Hard Drive Slot as "Empty" I can use it for storage at the moment, but I would rather use it as my boot drive. I don't know why and how this happened, so please help!! Thanks in advance.
  9. Can't find info for this anywhere- just M.2 performance in general. WoW forums aren't helping. I have a Samsung Evo 850.. great load times, boot up in under 30 seconds, never thought "this is going slow"... Except for object and NPC loading in WoW at times. I am looking at getting a 950 (5x faster read speed) or 951 (4x faster read speed) to solve this problem. I want to eliminate this loading of game objects crap once and for all. Anyone have experience with switching between the 2 in a huge game like this? Anyone without anecdotal evidence wanna share what would happen in theory?
  10. I'm thinking about buying the samsung 950 pro nvme pcie ssd (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015SOI392/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=E8K9QC3KK7F0&coliid=I1WU2EH6Y8YMS5&psc=1), but I don't have an m.2 slot in my motherboard. Is there any good quality m.2 to pcie ssd mount? There are one's for around $15 US but I don't know if they are gonna bottleneck the ssd in some way. Thanks for your help!
  11. I have 6 sata ports on my Gigabyte UD3 990fx rev4 board. as far as pcie it has PCI Express 2.0 x16 4 (x16, x16, x4, x4) PCI Express x1 2 x PCI Express x1 PCI Slots 1 x PCI Slot I am using a x16 for my 980. I am wondering about adding a pcie SSD to the system. I have a 240gb ssd (primary) and 120gb ssd and 2 1tb mech drives, a dvdrom drive I do use and a front esata port that goes to my fan controller/sd card reader esata which I might be able to unplug as I don't use it ATM. So if I was to add another ssd or 2 , I have a few questions: Can I put 2 of them in RAID 0 for a performance boost? Are they worth it vs SATA? Are they actually faster than SATA? What can you recommend? I would use it to install games to. I use my 240gb (kingston furyx) as my primary , OS, a bunch of games, daily driver apps etc. The 120 ssd I use for games like GTAV and about 3 small games. the mech drives are the rest of my games, music, movies pictures you get the idea..everything else. Thanks in advance!
  12. Hi guys, I'm currently in search of a new PCIe M.2 SSD for my laptop which features a PCIe 4x M.2 slot to replace the crap budget SSD that came with my laptop. The only PCIe SSDs which are AHCI based I know of now are the Samsung SM951 and the Kingston HyperX Predator. I'm gonna get one in a few months time and can someone tell me what other options do I have apart from these 2? I live in Singapore and I am willing to spend about SGD$300 max. And also, it has to be no larger than the M.2 2280 size. Thanks in advance.
  13. I'm building a new system later this year, but thinking through my options at the moment and wanted some informed, constructive input. The system is going to be my "do everything" PC. Gaming, Music/Video production & CAD My original thinking was Z97 with a 4790k overclocked, 2x GTX980 in SLI with a 1 to 2TB STAT-III SSD (i have a NAS for my main storage), 32GB DDR3 PCI 2.0 audio interface. That's a decent system, right? The bottle neck is likely to be the SSD r/w speed. Maybe i could Raid 0, but then you have to consider redundancy as a potential drawback. But with the new PCIe SSD's coming over the horizon it is changing my thinking. If I'm spending that kind of money on a system that I want to do everything comfortably, should i consider PCIe storage? Which brings me to why i posted in this category. My understanding of the way PCIe 3.0 traffic is handled through the chipset to the CPU is that it is shared through the available lanes. So that's 16Lanes on Z97, 41Lanes on X99. With the Z97 that would mean there would be contention, but not on the x99. If I go down the route of X99 I'm then seriouly ramping up the cost of the system: MoBo, RAM, CPU etc I guess what I'm really asking is will I notice the contention of 2GPU & SSD on the 16 Lanes of the Z97? Does anyone have experience of both architectures? At what level of cpu demand is x99 needed/advised? Is high end multi GPU with PCIe SSD designed for X99 or is it suitable for Z97? Will I get a better performing system with the GPU's sharing the 16Lanes of a Z97 and having a SATA III drive(s) or does the benefit of PCIe SSD out weigh the contention, even on the Z97/LGA1150 platform?
  14. I'm building my new gaming rig this summer and it's been a looooooong time since my last build so I could really use some feedback! 1. Budget & Location Located in Oslo capital of Norway, using the Norwegian Kroner (NOK) currency. My budget is about 20000 NOK, which is currently about 2700 USD. My plan is to order a lot from the states, since most agree that the NOK/USD rate will improve in my favor fairly soon. So my actual budget might be closer to 3000USD 2. Aim This will mostly for gaming, but also everything else^^' I do a lot of programming, but not to the extent that it should have a bearing on how i build my rig. I'm also a clinical multi-tasker, often gaming while browsing with 30+ tabs, while watching a show while Skyping... The main goal of this build is to have a good foundation to continue expanding upon. I plan on overspending on certain things (motherboard, power supply, GPU, etc.) in order to make it easier to upgrade/expand next year. 3. Monitors The plan is to use two old HP w2207h monitors I have leftover from an old rig, until 4k gaming monitors become a bit more affordable. 4. Peripherals I have mouse, keyboard, headset and speakers from previous builds that I can still use, but the Corsair K70 RGB is tempting^^' But that's later, for now I have what I need. (btw, if you know where I can get a Nordic set of Corsair keycaps for K70/K95, that is also relevant information^^) 5. Why are you upgrading? My current "gaming rig" is a 5 years old ASUS ROG G73Jh laptop, which I bought before starting the Norwegian mandatory military tour. No desktops in the barracks^^' In addition to the outdated hardware, the Graphics Drivers are from 2011 or something, since the ATI-card isn't supported anymore and the recommended AMD replacement Drivers cause Bluescreen-levels of compatibility issues. So now I'm ready for a proper gaming rig with an SSD, DDR4, Haswell, Maxwell, and all the other bells and whistles! On to my plans! SSD: Intel series 750 1,2TB PCIe SSD http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VPK0MWK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER I'm kind of in love with this drive... It is between two and four times as fast as the fastest SATA SSD. Head and shoulders above the competition. I have a pretty shitty hybrid Drive, so going from this to that will be an experience. First World Problems: My load times will be so quick I can't read the Hints on the loading screen 'XP Whether I get the Add-In-Card or the 2.5-inch version depends on which I can find the cheapest. It's still really pricy, so unless I can find a good deal or the prices drop a bit I'll probably settle for a Samsung 850 EVO 1TB. I have an external 1TB hard drive I can use for bulk-storage untill I buy an internal bulk-drive later. Motherboard: Since I want to use the Intel Series 750 as a boot-drive, I have to use a motherboard with Z97 or X99 chipsets, which means I also have to have a Intel CPU. Not that I'm complaining XP I'd prefer an X99 with DDR4 support, 2011-3 socket and some overclocking utility. I'd also like one with a lot of PCIe ports (preferably 4) so I can expand into SLI while using the Intel 750 and still have one slot open for a Sound Card or other utility. I'd rather have too much space than too little, so ATX or E-ATX is the plan. USB 3.0 is a must and USB 3.1 could be nice, but not really needed. If I get the 2.5inch version of the Intel 750 SSD I'll also need a M.2 slot for it^^ I've been looking at the ASUS ROG Rampage V, but it's pricy to the point where I'm probably overpaying for stuff I'll never use. CPU: Since I multitask a lot I'd like a six-core i7-____k or i7-____x, preferably with hyper threading. Other than that, I'm unsure as to which processor is best for me, so it'll probably be the one which I get the best deal on XP RAM: Preference here is Corsair, by far. I think 4 x 4GB is the sweet spot and it'll be DDR4 since I want the x99 chipset. I'm unsure about how much MHz, CL, and Vengance/Dominator will make a noticeable difference for me. Just know I want something that keeps pace with my CPU and Intel SSD in particular. Also I like the look of the Dominator Platinum ^^' GPU: The plan here is to get a single powerful and SLI-ready card now, then when the price of that card drops next year, I'll get another to put in SLI. Preference here is Nvidia, and I've been looking at EVGA's GTX980 SC. The 2982-version has Nvidia's own cooler that's optimised for close-sitting SLI. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NI5DA2E/ref=psdc_284822_t1_B00R3NK340?_encoding=UTF8&path=%2Fdp%2FB00NI5DA2E%2Fref%3Dpsdc_284822_t1_B00R3NK340&useRedirectOnSuccess=1 Of course, if I find that I can afford a Titan X instead, I'll take that! Power Supply: Again the preference is Corsair, but as long as it is 80+ Silver or better, it doesn't matter too much. Since the plan is to build for the future and also do some overclocking, I figure I should have about a 1000W. Again I'm not sure. Prefer something fully modular, but since I'll be getting a full-tower there should be plenty of space to hide surplus wires from a non-modular PSU. Chassis: I far prefer a Full-tower for ease of air-flow, water-cooling and spacing of components. Plenty of fan-mounts with dust-filters. Durable materials. Minimalistic, muted design. Window is nice. Compartmentalization is a plus. Noise-control is a big plus. Must. Be. Black. All my PCs have been black and had "Black" in their name, and I can't break with that now 'XP I also think I'd like a pair of drive-bays since I still use some game-disks and I'll probably get a fan-controller eventually. The two I've been looking at are the Corsair Obsidian 750D and Phanteks Enthoo Pro/Luxe. Cooling: I'll be using a closed loop system for the CPU and I'm pretty sure I want the Corsair H100i GTX, but I'm open to suggestions. The rest of the cooling will depend on the chassis I end up getting, but I know I want quiet fans and rather have a lot of them at low RPMs to minimize sound. Air Flow vs. Static Pressure will also depend on the chassis, but I know enough to want a slight overpressure. Brands don't matter too much, but I like Corair and Noctua from experience. Finally: Thank you for reading trough all that! Any and all constructive feedback is appreciated^^
  15. Not sure if this should go in motherboard section or storage... Please correct me if it is wrong. I just placed an order for a Kingston HyperX Predator 240GB PCIe SSD (http://www.ncix.com/detail/kingston-hyperx-predator-240g-shpm2280p2h-240g-19-107935-1334.htm ) but I'm not entirely certain that it works with my motherboard. I am lacking in knowledge about PCIe so I would just like a confirmation about that will work with my mobo. I have a Asus X79 Sabertooth (more info here: https://www.asus.com/ca-en/Motherboards/SABERTOOTH_X79/ ) and I am currently only using the top PCIe slot for my graphics card. I was in need of more space and this was on sale so I figured why not. Going to pick it up tomorrow though and would be really choked if it didn't work with my system. I do a lot of photo and video editing and I found that faster storage helped things move along more smoothly. For reference, here is the rest of my build. Intel Core i7 3820 Quad Core 10MB 3.6GHZ Hyperthreading LGA2011 Processor Kingston HyperX 4X4GB DDR3-1600 XMP Dual Channel Memory Crucial M4 Micron C400 SSD 256GB 2.5IN MSI GTX570 Twin Frozr II Running windows 7 Ultimate The reviews for this SSD seem impressive but if anyone has any other thoughts about it I would like to hear them. Thanks!
  16. Hi. So i recently bought the new Intel Pcie 750 SSD. Which uses the Nvme standard. Firstly i checked whether my Motherboard supported the SSD and it did. (MSI x99s gaming 9) So i've installed win 8.1 and everything seems ok. But that's it. I dont feel like i boot up that fast, not as fast as i really wanted it to. So i looked into it, made sure T.R.I.M was enabled. Checked if Fast Boot was. But it really didnt seem to impact the start up time that much. Then i benchmarked the sucker and found a comparison online, and i get lower write speeds than other, and about the same read speeds. but a lower overall score. (using AS SSD benchmark) I have several HDD and a spare SSD installed on my system. But The HDD has literally nothing on them, and has nothing to do with the boot sequence to do. The SSD (Samsung EVO840) only has like one game installed. When i launch Intel Toolbox it doesn't really recognize the PCIE SSD, it knows it's name, but i'm unable to update the Firmware. So i downloaded it from Intel's website, and installed it. I didn't feel any difference. It feels like buying a brand new graphics card and not be able to install the driver for it. Yeah it shows the screen, and yeah it can handle something. But it doesnt feel like it's using it's full potential. What can be affecting my boot time? i feel like its just as fast or maybe a bit slower when i had the SATA SSD installed. Or did i just expect to much from Pcie nvme???? I have attached Screenshots of AS SSD and Intel Tooltip. EDIT* startup time is 37.5 seconds from power bottom press until win 8 is fully loaded.
  17. As the title says, which of these PCIe SSD's have the faster boot time? #1: PCIe 2.0 x8 SSD with 4K Random Reads of up to 230,000 IOPS with Legacy Boot or #2: PCIe 2.0 x2 SSD with 4K Random Reads of up to 100,000 IOPS with UEFI Boot
  18. I'm in the final stages of purchasing parts for a high end (numerical/Monte Carlo modeling + optical design/ray trace) system that I will also use for gaming. My question is best configuration for SSDs Original idea (M.2 + SSD): Samsung XP941 512GB for boot Samsung 850 Pro 1TB for applications/games Second idea (all SSD): 2x Samsung 850 Pro 1TB RAID0 (boot + applications/games) or . . . 4x Samsung 850 Pro 512GB RAID10 or something along these lines Third idea (PCIe SSD) Mushkin Scorpion Deluxe 960 GB or 1920 GB The XP941 and the Scorpion give me great speed, the Samsung 850's have very high reliability. I am looking for advice/suggestions and pros/cons. I buy the drives on Tuesday. Basic build: i7 5960X (overclocked) NZXT Kraken x61 ASUS X99 Deluxe 64 GB G.Skill Ripjaws 4 2800 MHz Boot + application drives TBD 2x WD Caviar Black 4TB RAID1 (storage/backups) 2x GALAX GTX 980 HOF (SLI) Seasonic Snow Silent 1050W Thermaltake Core V51 3x Samsung S27D590C (displays) Budget is $7,500 - 8,000 No comments on the RAM please. I need for ray tracing during optical design. I need the CPU horsepower for the numerical modeling. I can max out an OC 5960X for an hour or two with a simulation and spend the rest of the data sifting through the data. Dual Xeons don't make sense if I benchmark by $/GFLOPS.
