Hi Quick question. I have a Corsair CX550M PSU. I have a Palit Geforce 1060 3GB GPU. Rest of the system in the description. Anyway. I want to know if it is okay to power my GPU with the following old molex-6 pin pci-e adapter that I am attaching a photo of. The PSU does come with a dual 6+2 pci e power connectors, but for visual reasons = as little cables in a small case as possible, I have used the above. Everything is running fine like this, but: Can it damage the GPU in the long run? I read something about rails having to be utilized properly. It is also for obvious reasons, connected through the SATA/Periphial port on the PSU, not the PCI-e one. The adapter came from an old PC from 2008. (This used to power a GTX 260!!) Does this matter? Do cables get "too old" ? I also noticed that there are only five wires on this adapter, as opposed to six on the one that came with the PSU. Does it affect the lifetime of the GPU? Like I said, everything is working fine with this setup, and I intend to keep it this way if it is good to go.

So I need a wifi card and i just wanted some suggestions. ive got $50 to spend and i would prefer not to spend all of it on a wifi card but if thats what is comes to then whatever. so my internet speed is about 110 download and 100 upload but i would prefer a card than can go quite a bit higher just for the sake of extra headroom and bragging rights.

Will pci-e 3.0 x4 slot bottleneck something like rx 470? I don't have pci-e 3.0 x16.

So I am building my own router, I know it isn't the most accepted way of doing your own network, but as a beginning engineering student I would love to do it. So I got a problem, well a problem for my wallet that is. I'm looking for a PCIe WiFi card that can use 2.4 and 5 GHz at the same time, I don't really care if it is a triple or not, would be nice. I know it is a weird thing for PC's to have concurrent internet connections over WLAN, but building a router with the PC compontents we all know and love, gives me a problem. I can't find a card which supports these specifications, which would lead me into buying two 100 Euro cards which is a bit sad for Mr. W. Allet. I am planning a build that includes a pci extender. Now for spacing purposes I want to know what pci slot to use for my extender since the max length without data loss is 20cm (8"). In the manual of the motherboard I found this about the pci-e x16 slots and graphic cards: • Single x16• Dual x8/x8• Triple x8/x8/x4 Does this mean the first slot is x16 only and the second is x8, or does it mean it splits the first and second slot into x8 x8 when you use sli (what I won't be doing)? I will only use one pci-e x16 slot so this confused me. I was considering building a new x99 pc when i saw that it uses the 2nd generetion of PCI-E lanes, then i saw an article about intel and there new upcoming LGA2066 socket, so i was wondering if the new chipset that will use the new LGA2066 socket will support the 3rd generetion of PCI-E. I aint found someone that knew about it so I came to the linustechtips forums to see if some knows about it. If you know something about it please respone to this, it will be very appreciated. -
So my current system is comprised of a GA-Z68XP-UD4, a 2700k @4.2GHz and a GTX 1080 Founders Edition. Of course at the moment, I only have a PCI-E gen 2.0 x16 slot for the 1080, soon to be a x8 once my USB 3.1 expansion card arrives. I've seen benchmark comparisons between x8 and 16, as well as between gen 2.0 and 3.0, but I was wondering, what is the general percentage increase? Since I have a 1080, how much is it bottlenecking me? And is the 2700K also messing things up? I'm tempted to go to a 4770k or a 4790k depending on the prices on eBay and such, Kind regards!

So, here I am, finally building new Ryzen-based system after couple of moths of buying components and waiting for platform to mature (at least a bit). System boots up, all lights green, I can connect my existing disks carried over from old computer with Steam library and stuff. And here comes my first part of this small rant about motherboards: 1. Why do manufacturers put SATA ports in place where they are inaccessible when I have longer graphics card? I cannot access first 4 SATA ports, because graphics card gets in a way. Fine, no big deal, I remove the card and connect cables. But - uh-oh, here comes the biggest pet peeve of all: 2. WHY THERE IS THAT FRIKEN PCI-E SLOT RETENTION CLIP THAT I NEED TO PUSH TO TAKE CARD OUT, and it's under the GPU itself??? You see, I have fairly standard sized graphics card, speaking from today's perspective. Bottom part is where cooling is, I cannot push the clip from there. Top part is tiny bit higher because of backplate, but it should still reachable - unless I have installed tower CPU cooler. that prevents me from putting finger in there and pushing it! I constantly run into this problem with Hyper 212 and similar coolers, but now it is even worse because I have monstrous Noctua NH-D15. Adding photo for illustration of what I am trying to to deal with right now: See that small dark ... thing above GPU and below the fan that needs to be pushed? Yeah, I barely see it too - and that's with camera flash on. To make matters worse, I cannot remove fan from CPU cooler if I wanted to make a room - because retention clips for fan are in place where I cannot reach either due to graphics card! So, guys, how do you solve this problem? I have plugged hard drives into other SATA ports, which solver immediate problem of connecting those, but I truly fear the moment when I will want to remove card for upgrade or tear the system down. Honestly I do not have the answer on how to solve the problem with retention clips. I understand why they have to be there, but should MoBo manufacturers make them bigger or longer or different mechanism so I can at least reach and push them with long screwdriver?

So I recently watched a video from a youtuber called LowSpecGamer titled "An External GPU for an old Laptop?" In the video he uses an old netbook with the video card dock and it seems that it works to some extent. He also mentions in the video that he ran into a heavy CPU bottleneck. This left me wondering if this would work even better for me than shown in the video since I'm also using an older laptop (getting close to 3 years now), but instead of having a crappy celeron chip I have a third gen i7 in my laptop (which was originally purchased for school work that included virtualisation.) How much performance degradation should I expect if I bought this? The video in question. I want to put dual M.2 SSDs on RAID 0, but doesn't Skylake only have 20 PCI-E lanes, or is it 16 lanes + 20 by the chipset. So would I have to run my GPU in 8x 4x 4x or can run 16x 4x 4x? -
Hey guys, I have some weird graphics card issues on my board right now. Specs are: Optiplex 755 (Mid-tower) Motherboard(https://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/optix/en/opti_755_techspecs.pdf) PNY GT 730 1GB GDDR5(https://pny.com/gt-730-1024mb-gddr5) Intel Q6600 Processor (http://ark.intel.com/products/29765/Intel-Core2-Quad-Processor-Q6600-8M-Cache-2_40-GHz-1066-MHz-FSB)\ I've turned off all possible power-saving adjustments, both in the BIOS, and in the nvidia control center and windows power mangement. BIOS is pacthed to the latest version (A22) Nothing else is inside any other PCI-e slots If I'm missing anything else necessary to debug this, lmk. So here's my issue: my graphics card is running (according to GPU-z and nvidia inspector) at x1 speeds with gen 1.1, while it reports that it can run at x8 v1.1 speeds. Doing the common stress test on both GPU-z and 3d-benchmark doesn't help, it still stays at x1 speeds. Re-seating or cleaning the card/slot doesn't help either. According to this post with the same motherboard and similar graphics card http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3515/t/19986614, it says that the Optiplex 755 MT's chipset and board doesn't recognize cards with x8 or x4 speeds and locks it at x1. This makes sense why it seems stuck at x1 speeds, since gpu-z and cpu-z say the max bandwidth my card reports is at x8. But the off-thing is that according to PNY, it's supposed to run at x16 v2 speeds, which makes me suspect that either the motherboard is reading the card wrong, or the card is reporting wrong speeds back to the motherboard. How can I get my motherboard to recognize my graphics card's F U L L P O T E N T I A L ? Thanks!

Fellow Techies, Would anyone have any idea why an Asus sound card would not work on all the PCI-E X1 slots but will work on the x16? I have a GPU (of coarse on x16) and an Ethernet Card (on any of the x1) on the motherboard as well. The Ethernet card will work on all Slots. Any ideas? Before you ask me why I have a sound card, or tell me I shouldn't need one, my sound quit working and after all the hardware and software troubleshooting, I found the motherboard flipped me off and gave up on making sound. Here is the sound card just in case you need some info on what I have.

So after much thought and deliberation: I finally decided to purchase an Aorus 1080 Ti Xtreme Edition (it was the last card my local retailer had in stock). Filled with glee, anticipation and $1250 less in my wallet: I rushed home as quickly as I could. Alas, my elation was short-lived as I was unable to remove my asus 780 DCUII from the pci-e slot. I stood there pondering why I opted for such a massive CPU heat sink. Or why I chose such a cumbersome variant of a GPU. "Never again" - I said.. Basically: the pci-e clip is inaccessible between my noctua NH-D14 (top side of the card) and the massive GPU heatpipe on the (bottom side of the card). I'm torn as I don't build pc's. I've always had NCIX put them together whilst they test the system before it gets shipped out. Replacing video cards is obviously a no brainer when there's no obstructions. So that begs some questions: Is replacing video cards usually this problematic with noctua heatsink(s)? I mean, having to removing a CPU heat sink just so I can install a gpu seems a little ridiculous considering I don't own the proper tools for the job. Would it be safe to use a wooden or plastic chopstick to reach the pci-e clip? The latch seems super stiff and I don't want to risk damaging the motherboard.

Was trying to find a good wireless network card for my pc build (will need somewhat for now and the ability is nice to have) and saw there are loads of options. Hello, So I went and installed GPU-z to monitor my cards, I have 2 1080ti's on PCI bus x16 and x8... The first card I had installed got moved to the x8 slot. When the second one came in I put it into the x16 slot and reinstalled my drivers. GPU-z is showing that each card is on the x8 slot. What could be causing this? Is it an accurate reading? Or something like the drivers are defaulting to the old card? I know just enough to install this stuff and get it working, so I'm a little confused. SLI is not enabled yet, waiting on the bridge. Not sure if that bears on it, but in the meantime I would like to be operating on the x16 bus of course...

I was comparing GA-AB350M-D3H(m-atx) and GA-AB350-Gaming(atx) motherboards in the Gigabyte site, and the only difference was the number of PCI-E slots other than the obvious size difference. My question is; are all those slots really necessary? I do think using the system as a tool for learning about servers and stuff after it retires, but I doubt if I'll ever need those extra PCI-E slots even in that case. So I'm thinking of going for an m-atx board and save about $10 dollars. Is it a good choice for me? -
