Hello, My laptop's MXM GPU dies recently, I found some solutions on the internet to plug an eGPU to a laptop using the Express Card slot and an adapter, but I was wondering if I couldn't use my laptop's MXM 3.b port to plug-in the GPU or do I need an adapter as well ? It's an Alienware M17X R4 of 2012 (AMD 7970m version) Thanks !

Dear LinusTechTips Community, I recently build a Case for my Computer and now I need a PCI extension cable to fit it in. For this I bought https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B01EG7LEAM But hey it is not working. Why do I know it is the cable? Well, I tried it back to back once without the cable, once with the cable. Today I found out that different Stips, or however they are called in the cable, have contact. Is that normal or did i break it? https://youtu.be/aRxAzr-EUQY (still uploading, 6min to go, just shows that 2 lines have contact) I used some force to bend it, so I could have broken it, but seriously? It was completely new and I spend 20 bucks for that -.- Thanks for your Time, wanted to ask for your experiences before I send the cable back and buy a new one. Paul Münch

Just wondering if anyone can offer advice on PCI wifi cards. There seems to be such a massive price difference between some cards and I have no clue what I need/what is worth the money. I'm not too far from my modem but I am on a different floor to it.

I have personally had a hard time with PCI. So many versions and types! I have had a hard time with compatibility! This is a place for posts and other such things related to PCI.

Hi everyone, I need your help. I want to build a computer, but I am moving from US pretty soon, so I want something mobile. (must fit my luggage) My requirements are not much, but they are specific So here they are: - The smallest that fits what I need. - It has to have 2 PCI lanes, one for graphics card, one for perhaps upgradeability or Thuderbolt 3 - M.2 Slot for PCI SSD - Space for a small water cooler for CPU (Im going to be running a 7700k, don't plan on overclocking heavily) - Space for one 4tb HD for footage. That's it. I was thinking the Tiki from FalconNorthWest. Seems awesome, is there anything similar? If anyone has a suggestion. I am grateful already! Thanks everyone. Ivan

Ok, so I'm building a tower with a Ryzen 5 chip. The point of this system is to experiment with some midrange stuff from AMD as I have only used intel core i7's in the past. I only plan on keeping this system as my main computer until late 2018 or early 2019 so upgradability is not an issue. I have a few minor issue to work out before I build it and wanted to consult the forums to see if you guys think it will work. Here is the build so far: PCPartPicker part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/r9WzgL Price breakdown by merchant: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/r9WzgL/by_merchant/ CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1500X 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($188.98 @ NCIX US) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-AB350M-Gaming 3 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard ($93.89 @ OutletPC) Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws 4 Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2800 Memory ($64.99 @ Newegg) Storage: Intel 600p Series 512GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive ($169.99 @ SuperBiiz) Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon RX 580 8GB Gaming 8G Video Card ($235.00) Case: Corsair Carbide Series 88R MicroATX Mid Tower Case ($44.99 @ Newegg) Power Supply: EVGA 500W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply ($33.98 @ Amazon) Total: $831.82 so, the main issue is that I want to tackle is pcie lanes, im not sure how they work on ryzen. can i use the m.2 drive and the graphics card without any lane issues? Also, I want to be able to add bluetooth to the machine, and i havent figured out the best way to do that. If i add another pci e card to add wifi and blue tooth, will there be enough lanes for that card? Another issue is motherboards, i hear that all of the AM4 mobos have been iffy, but i think the one i chose will get the job done. Also, feel free to comment on the balance of the system, and i plan on using the stock cooler because i dont plan on doing huge amounts of overclocking.

Hello, I'm looking for an old graphics card to revive my old server from way back 2002. It has a dual-xeon Tyan Thunder i7501 server motherboard, 2 Intel Xeon SL6NS 2.8GHz 512KB L2 Cache, 4GB 266MHz ECC RAM, a thermaltake xaser III, and an EVGA 650 BQ. The problem with finding a Video Card is that the motherboard only has 1 PCI (non express) and multiple PCI-X (not express, EXTENDED) slots, none of which I have found a Video Card for. This video card can be the worst one on earth, as long as it is capable of displaying an image to a monitor. This isn't for gaming at all, purely for the nostalgia of booting up this battleship of a PC, as it is so loud I can wake up the whole neighborhood with the POST xD.

Hello my friends! Recently I have purchased the ECS H87H3-M3(1.0) Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard. I was wondering what pci wifi adapters would work. I currently have a graphics card blocking the PCI Express slot, I was wondering if I could use one of the two slots below it. I was thinking maybe this wifi adapter https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G50Y5432&cm_re=pci_wifi_adapter-_-33-166-054-_-Product but will it fit? Hello I have a Frankenstein LAN PC build that I have integrated into a briefcase and it runs well surprisingly that it cost me $80 for components. Anyway, my problem is that I am running a Lenovo SFF 7303 Motherboard it's horrible but I got it for $5 can't complain. On the board, there is a PCIe 16x that I currently have a graphics card connected to by an extension cable so it fits in the case, the only problem with that is it blocks my only other port the PCI 8X (Not Express). I need this port for a network card I have tried USB dongles and they are rubbish so I need a full-size network card. The only way I can fit one is by extension cables to loop around the graphics card. I have an old network card TP-Link thing its ok that runs of PCIe 1x so I have two questions regarding. One can I run a PCIe 1x straight from a PCI 8x if not can I do it the long way by getting a PCIe 8x to PCIe 16x converter flip it so it fits in the PCI 8x slot and then run a PCIe 1x out of it. I trust the last one might be ambitious. I will appreciate any help given or ideas to how else I can get Wi-Fi to a briefcase maybe by USB somehow? Cheers Lucien

Hi. I'm planning on building a low cost gaming/autodesk maya capable rig. I was looking through my options and I ran into a question that I cant get a straight answer to from many online sources I searched. Here are some relavant components that I want to put together: Intel i7-7700K - Newegg.com ASUS ROG GeForce GTX 1080 Ti - Newegg.com ASUS ROG Maximus IX Hero - Newegg.com So, to the question. I noticed that CPU can support only 16 PCI lanes. The GPU needs 16 PCI lanes. Now, if I'd like to connect M.2 (Socket 3 with M Key) SSD, does it use 4 PCI lanes? Does it impair GPUs full, 16 PCI lanes, potential? P.S. In case it does weaken GPU performance, what would be a CPU that you can advice for me to get that can support both 1080 Ti and M.2?

Hello, I need your help, I am desperate, this is My RIg, yesterday my cpu cooler do a weird song and when I look up in to it, it was leaking. I clean my motherboard with isopropyl alcohol and the gpu too. I let them dry, and when I reconnect everything works fine for two hours, then I update the drivers and open Excel and then this happend (the images). I try to uninstall the drivers, but that doesn't work neither. I can use the Integrated Graphics cards of the processor, but how do I know if my gpu die? or my PCI-e? Also, I tried to use the GPU in every PCI-e and the result was the same.

This is my first PC and the internet literally is unusable. Steam installs at 10 KB/s and crashes on me so I can't get anything done. I've gotten no sleep last night trying to figure this shit out and no forums have helped me so far.

I am looking to buy a new motherboard for my budget build, and want to keep most of the build to save money, but want to upgrade the motherboard to make room for future improvements. The CPU that I want to keep is an 'AMD Athlon II X4 645' (not the best, but I'm super budget ), and 6 gb DDR3 (haven't run out of memory yet, but might expand later. so I need an AM3 motherboard with DDR3 ram, but I also want enough room in the PCI slots to be able to have 2 dual slot graphics cards and 2 other things (one, if the motherboard has built in wifi, I have no option to run ethernet into my room). are there any motherboards that might satisfy these criteria on the cheap(>100$, I'm REAAAAAALLY budget)?

My 680 died recently, and I'm looking for a new card to replace it. I have my eye on the 1060. Now here's the thing, I'm running on some what old hardware. I7 860 @ 3.66GHZ, meaning the motherboard is PCI gen2. I know that the 680 was compatible but not sure with the newer ones. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

So i started lagging, and i checked the speed, its only 5.5mbit as you can see. Usually its 144mbits. This is my wifi card : https://www.asus.com/Networking/PCEAC56/ Someone explain why this happens ?

Hey all, I recently found an old server while doing the ol' dumpster dive, and along with it a bunch of old cool stuff. Among those things was a Compaq DLT tape drive, some scsi hard drives, and a scsi controller (and also raid i think) card. Because of the age of my motherboard I was able to verify that the card still works, along with it's custom bios chip that is onboard. The thing is though, I haven't been able to find windows 10 drivers for this card. Does anyone know where I can find at least somewhat current drivers for an Adaptec AHA-2940AU scsi card? all drivers that I've found are pre-windows 7. And if not, would a scsi to usb adapter work with a Compaq 3300 DLT Tape Drive? Thanks in advance!

I'm looking at build small circuits that would use fingers to connect into some sort of backplane. ISA slots come to mind: I see this type of connector used in electronics projects every so often . What are those called so i know what to look for ?

I am looking for a cheap, easy to find, PCI Graphics card to upgrade an old oem dell system. Not PCI Express, Origonal PCI. I know they are hard to come by on used sites like ebay, but I was wondering if theres a specific model that is pretty comon and can handle basic tasks like playing a 720p youtube video in a linux enviroment. If anyone knows anything please respond.

Hello, I would like to know if my build below will work in that I want each card to run . I do not care if each card drops right down to PCI 1x, I just want them to run. Please don't criticize the price, double PSU, CPU choice, MOBO choice, RAM choice, etc. This is a PCI question. As long as each card runs and is detected by the system, I will be happy with it. I am predicting that because the motherboard supports 4-way SLI and the i5 only has 16 PCI lanes, that each card will fall back to something like 4x each or maybe 8/4/2/2. Here is the build: Thanks in advance!

Hi, I'm trying to get the most of my current motherboard, and it's supporting PCI Express 1.1, and I'm thinking about getting an nVidia gt 730 since these are very cheap and still not too slow. It supports PCIE 2.0, and I'm wondering, will using it on an older pci express slot give much worse performance?
