So I received a call from a family member telling me that they couldn't sign into their PC after they upgraded to windows 10. They said that they had to change their outlook password and in the process they must have changed it to something else and not realized what they changed it to. Recovering the password didn't work and we're running out of options. If all else fails I'm thinking of trying to brute force my way in, but I really know nothing about the process. If anyone could recommend some software and explain how to use it that would help a ton.

having a password VS not having a password i hate the fact that if you "ask how remove passwords" (from our own account) the linux community gets all crazy (and they even start to insult you) instead "help you" because you "obviously" are doing a "mistake" (and they have the right to choose for you) soo... this poll come to my mind  and yes, we all know is insecure (obviously), but is our own right if i have a new machine (with linux) and i want make it easy for the customer, is my choice

Soon, you may be able to log in to Outlook with a fingerprint or an eyescan. At the Stanford Cybersecurity Summit on Friday, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 would support the next version of the Fast Identification Online (FIDO) spec, allowing devices to work with a wealth of third-party biometric readers and providing an easy framework for any hardware makers that want to build extra security into a laptop or phone. Unlike existing fingerprint readers, FIDO is designed to entirely replace passwords, moving towards faster and more localized authentication methods. In a blog post accompanying the announcement, Microsoft's Dustin Ingalls said moving beyond the password was, "one of the top priorities for us here at Microsoft." Designed as an open standard, FIDO has the support of some of the largest companies in banking and tech, including Microsoft, Google, PayPal, and Bank of America. The system is designed to protect biometric information through a zero-knowledge proof, authenticating eye scans or fingerprints locally without exposing them to the web at large. Version 1.0 of the specification was released in January, and companies like Yubico are already making hardware that uses FIDO to log into Google accounts. Windows 10 support is tied to the 2.0 release, to which Microsoft is contributing design inputs. Source : http://www.theverge.com/2015/2/16/8047427/microsoft-windows-10-fido-password-killer-biometric

The Internet giant launches a service that sends a short password to your phone. Think two-factor authentication, without the first factor. Turns out nobody can remember their Yahoo passwords. Now the company wants to make it so no one has to. Yahoo on Sunday launched a new service called "on-demand" passwords, which lets someone log into a Yahoo account using a short password the company texts to their phone instead of having to remember their own password. Here's how it works: You log into your Yahoo account using your normal passwords. In the security settings, you turn on on-demand passwords and register your phone. Next time you try to login, the password field is replaced by a button that says "send my password," and the company texts a four-character password to your phone. Dylan Casey, Yahoo's vice president of product management for consumer platforms, said during a session at the South by Southwest festival. The process feels like a common process for logging into websites called two-factor authentication, where you first enter your own password, then enter a second password the company sends to your phones. (Many popular services including Google's Gmail do this). Think of Yahoo's process like two-factor authentication, minus the first factor. Cyber security has become a top issue for the technology industry. Several of the world's most well-known companies, including Sony and Apple, have fought high-profile security vulnerabilities. Many companies have also tried to tackle the problem of their users having weak passwords. Password managers, like LastPass, also tries to take the burden off users to remember passwords. said Casey. http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/12/10/fido-alliance-publishes-final-draft-of-password-killing-security-standard FIDO ALLIANCE PUBLISHES FINAL DRAFT OF PASSWORD-KILLING SECURITY STANDARD Share.Lock it up! BY SETH TIPPSYou might not need to keep post-it notes of all your passwords underneath the computer anymore, thanks to a new identification standard that lets users log in with a USB flash drive. The FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) Alliance, a group comprised of device manufacturers, online service providers and enterprises, has just published the final draft of version 1.0 of both of its specifications: the Universal Authentication Framework (UAF) and Unversal 2nd Factor (U2F). Samsung Galaxy S5 Video Review04:37 In layman's terms, these standards make it possible to make a device with a digital fingerprint (or even a user's fingerprint) that gives access to any compatible service, like an e-mail provider or social network. FIDO has already been used by Google and Samsung for its one-touch authentication on the Galaxy S5 and, since the standards it publishes are open, any company can implement them on USB or other, more secure, hardware. A variety of manufacturers are already producing their own keys, and a company by the name of Nok Nok has adapted Apple's API to the FIDO standards. This isn't a new concept. Businesses have been using RSA SecureID for years, but this is the first time a standard has been implemented that works with consumer services like Gmail or PayPal. Having one standard that works across devices and services that might otherwise offer their own competing authentication services means that now a single key can login to any FIDO-compatible service. This could mean the end of passwords, but that depends on who adopts FIDO. Fortunately for those of us who can't remember a few dozen variations of a 12-digit password, the alliance already has major players like Microsoft, Netflix, Visa, and Bank of America at its back.

It is a samsung GT-S583D (not a high end device) and a friend came to me (as the techie in the neighborhood) wanting it factory reset because she does not know the passcode. I have no idea if this was a stolen phone, but given how cheap it is, and that she only wants to use it because her current phone is even cheaper, i am taking her word for it. I cannot seem to be able to get into the recovery options though. When i boot it up holding volume up, home, and power, it goes to "RAMDUMP" and doesn't do anything. I do not know of any other combo and figured i'd ask you guys :3 P.S: I don't need to see "don't steal phones" in the comments. I have a nexus 5, i have no reason to steal this dinky little samsung, thanks.

I have 2 routers, one is a modem and a router too (my pc is plugged in to it) and the other one is just a wifi router. I need both of them because the signal of the one on the wall is better and my sister can use it from downstairs. The thing is that when i type 191.168.1.1 in a browser, the settings come up for the one on the table, so i can only put a password on that one. I have tried putting in 192.168.1.x but it doesn't work. I would like to know how i can put a password on the one on the wall.

Hey guys, I've been trying to open a .pwm database/file for a while now and I'm out of ideas. I want to either open the .pwm file with the software it was created with or get it imported into my current password manager KeePass 2. I used some kind of password manager WAY back in mid 2006 (based on modified file date), so it's kinda hard to track down which software I used to create this... Any Google searches for opening up a .pwm file come up with ThinkVantage Password Manager which only runs on Lenovo machines (which I never had). Also Password Dragon seems to use the .pwm file extension, but after several tries this also couldn't open it. I tried a bunch of other password managers today, but none could open/import it successfully. If you guys have suggestions and could help me try to figure out what software it was that can open/import this type of password database file, that would be great. Remember this was around mid 2006, so it the password manager should be for Windows XP (so no mac/linux password managers). I'm pretty sure it was a standalone application (not a browser extension or some type of script). Hopefully you guys can help me out, if you need more information I'll try to answer as best I can. Thanks

#HELPGATE (did you guys hear that? i does more than bending) First credit goes to Onstar Auto feature which initially help to get the distress signal out in the first place.. Alright, Scenario: 28 year old Melissa Vasquez's woman's car rolled 500 feet down an embankment near San Jose, California,The OnStar feature in car triggered a call to police at 2 p.m. Monday, but placed the car near her home in the town of Campbell, California.Police searched the area fruitlessly for two hours, and reportedly received another alert at 4 p.m. giving her location as downtown San Jose. At 3 a.m. Tuesday, Vasquez's stepmother called Campbell police to report her missing.Officer Dave Cameron, who responded, got Vasquez's iPad, guessed the password after three tries, and activated the lost phone feature, which displayed a map of the phone's location. Cameron forwarded screen shots of the map from the iPad to the San Jose Police department, and Vasquez was found within 20 minutes. images of rescue: courtesy huffington post & CBS networks Officer Dave Cameron Rescue images: More images courtesy Huffington post & CBS news footage(click spoiler) This feature can be found on various other devices & for example , AT&T offers a smartwatch-like device called "Filip" that keeps kids constantly in touch with their parents and tracks their locations,Kids can call one of five preprogrammed numbers, or push an emergency button that, among other things, constantly updates their locations. Time to turn up the heat: B) Privacy Issues.. Alright, this doesn't come without a concern about the broiling issue of privacy , Vasquez's rescue highlights another aspect of a debate that has been raging over tracking people through their cellphones. The American Civil Liberties Union is fighting against government and law enforcement tracking of peoples' movements through various means, including cellphones. The circumstances of Vasquez's rescue are unusual, as law enforcement "does not have the technical competence or resources to track devices according to the law in most cases," Lieberman said. "It would be better to have a universal policy of authorized third parties that can access your device as part of your initial purchase." Or, the device could generate a unique code that could be shared with others to allow tracking For example Cyber stalkers are able to track victims, often in cases of domestic violence as NPR reported. But in other ways this is rather amazing way technology can help a stranded or a hurt person, Just gotta let the right people have to take control over it & not letting them abuse the system for their own person vendettas or issues..this is a really good news long since we heard that technology can be used for really realy bad things.. for more reads: http://www.technewsworld.com/story/Find-My-iPhone-Find-Me-Lost-Phone-Feature-Helps-Rescuers-Locate-Crashed-Car-81206.html Do Post your thought & replies , i do read em all

Hey everyone, I've been watching the Linus videos for a year or so now and love them, keep up the great work guys. Have also been lucking in the forums for months and have finally got around to creating an account after the Password discussion on the WAN Show. I thought I'd write a quick post as they were suggesting on the WAN that passphrases are the best thing to use as passwords. The problem I've had with passwords for a long time, no matter what format (standard passwords, strong random passwords, passphrases), is remembering what password I have used for what website/service. I am most definitely an advocate of using a completely different password for every single different website. On the low chance that one gets hacked everything else is still secure. The problem with this, even with the more secure passphrases, is remember what passphrase you used on what site. Using the same passphrase on multiple sites is just as bad as using a simple password. I have just started using a clever technique to generate unique, strong, completely random 20+ character passwords that are unique for every site but memorable. But how can WL0Y'QREj7fJzQ8AgJID be memorable? This is where hashing comes in. Hashing can take one or more bits of information and repeatedly hash it into the same string of characters. So the basis of the system I use uses the domain name of the particular website and a secret master key to hash a repeatble password. (The above is a hash of "test.com" as the domain and "test" as the master key). The hash will always be the same for the same domain and master key. This means you don't even have to use any "Remember My Password" services built into browsers these days, instead just use the same master key while the domain changes for each website you need a password. Suposedly these hashes are irreversible so even if one of the generated passwords is found by someone they won't be able to reverse engineer them to your master key. I wrote a quick hashing app that does it for me but there are lots of browser addons that can do this built into your browser, for example the Firefox Password Hasher. For me this is the most secure solution I've found. What do people think of using hashed passwords? How secure are they? Are they actually irreversible?

GOAL to make a folder hidden, locked, password protected or read-only Make an app have full-access to it it needs to work forever PROBLEM - when the PC boots, it takes time for the APP to run. By that span of time, all files are vulnerable to attacks, such as a user deletes it. However, if the APP has already opened, by then its protected. So I need something that can protect my files from harm specially deletion and tell the PC that only THAT program is capable for full-access. QUESTION - Is there a feature in Windows 7 that can do this kind of thing? - I have seen a program that does this kind of thing, called Folder Guard, but I gotta pay for it. Is there any other third party programs you know? - Or even anything that came close to what I want Thanks!

New "guidlines" for choosing a secure enough password, article by American cryptographer Bruce Schneier. Source: http://boingboing.net/2014/02/25/choosing-a-secure-password.html ______________________ To some people things mentioned in the article may seem like overkill, maybye I would have taught so too, if it weren't for the fact that just recently, someone actually tried to hack my gmail account, failed beacuse of the two stage indentification process, but it was a reasonably strong password, so it was no qualifyed guess. Seems tricks like using a phrase as password, has become obsolete due to the ever smarter password crackers. This as a response to LTT video about a year ago, regarding password creation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=FzzP3m1m2dg#t=145
