  1. Has anyone here been able to get dp passthrough working through thunderbolt on the X670E Pro Art wifi mobo? I'm at wits end trying different cables and displays but the passthrough just wont work. I have a 3090 and currently have 1 monitor connected through HDMI and 1 through DP . For my 3rd dp port on the 3090 i have the display port cable that came with my mobo connected to the "dp i:n slot in my mobo as seen in the pic below but none of the displays connected through the thunderbolt 1 port or 2 port are working. Am I doing anything wrong? The strange thing is some display shows up in windows when i attach the monitor this way but I'm unable to identify it, change the resolution or chose options such as duplicate or extend. Everything is all greyed out and nothing shows up on NVidia control panel. My thunderbolt control center also shows no device connected I have the thunderbolt drivers installed from ASUS drivers sections and the latest 1807 bios Current things I've tested - 4 different USB-C monitors that work on usb-c and thunderbolt laptops - 3 different tested and working dp cables as passthrough - various USBC, USB4 and thunderbolt certified cables that work on laptops for display and charging on laptops - all dps on the 3090 as passthrough Is there something I'm overlooking?
  2. Let's start with some background. My school's computer club was granted money to purchase a TV, current-gen consoles, and a new AV receiver. We went with a Samsung Q80 something--4K, 65", 120Hz, the whole package. Alongside that, we purchased an Xbox Series X and a PS5, and followed the purchases up with a new Yamaha RX-A4A receiver. All incredibly expensive equipment by reputable manufacturers, so we assumed the setup would "just work." It did not. Let's dive in. RX-A4A The A4A is a 7.1-channel audio receiver marketed as being able to do full 4K120 HDR passthrough with ALLM, Dolby Vision, and other protocols being preserved via its many HDMI inputs and 2+1 (zone 2) outputs. Unfortunately, it does not properly broadcast this fact to the devices hooked up to it. This is likely due, as far as I can tell, to the functionality being added in a firmware update--it would appear that either whatever EDID database each connected device is looking at shows the A4A as not supporting higher bitrate content, or that the device itself broadcasts the wrong capabilities. It also completely disables video out whenever the screen blanks from a client device--i.e. when you load into a game on either console. God of War Ragnarok blanks till the end of the Santa Monica Studios logo segment, for example. This is similar to an older bug on 2020-era Samsung TVs where Game Mode would spam-toggle on and off during the early loading/splash screen segments of games. The A4A has less issues with EDID recognition on its second HDMI output, where it seems to pass through the host's information--the TV recognizes the input as the host device (i.e. the Xbox Series X tile shows up on the awful Samung game menu), and the device recognizes the display out as the TV. The HDMI out 1 is still needed, as it supports eARC and the second does not. These points likely related. However, the audio input gets automagically mapped back to the TV via CEC or some other detection protocol. Output over HDMI out 2 --> turn on console --> tv makes the game mode enabled high pitched awful noise --> audio input goes to TV and console cannot output audio. Trying to change the input blanks the screen, and then the TV gets some CEC input to switch back to HDMI out 1 carrying the eARC signal. This remains true even if you disable HDMI video output over the first port. Samsung Q80 I will not count the absolutely terrible interface (2021+) as a bug, but it should be noted that this is the single worst interface I have ever used on a TV, including the Panasonic Viera Link interface from 2010. I am talking ultra-bad. Anyway, the first issue I'll talk about is the broken audio passthrough interface. While the TV is perfectly capable of doing eARC audio, it will flat-out REFUSE to broadcast the ability to play anything above stereo, including on passthrough mode. Dolby is of course the exception here, but I would like 5.1/7.1 uncompressed to be available, and for some reason it is not. Using the PS5 or a PC, it is possible and easy to override the advertised capability. In Windows, you can just hit Configure in sound settings to select the configuration, and the PS5 has a nice, easy to interact with menu that lets you select the type of output device manually. With passthrough, it works flawlessly. However, the Xbox lack this capability, and will only give options for what the TV explicitly identifies as being capable of. The next issue is also with this so-called "passthrough." If the signal were being "passed through," there wouldn't be a second-long delay when using Atmos. Hooking the Xbox directly up to the A4A with HDMI output 1 (despite the incapability to do anything above 4K60/1080p120) yields perfect audio, with all options being enabled, and essentially zero audio latency. The TV should not add that much time and clearly, since it monkeys with the broadcasted capability, it is not actually passing through. This prevents me from using passthrough on the TV to circumvent the other issues. The TV has one last crippling issue that breaks key functionality: it reports different capabilities based on a predefined input list. Companies other than Sony have special tile icons for their devices on the TV menu, and each one goes along with a specific profile. This results in interesting behavior, where devices capable of more are restricted to what Samsung's profile thinks they can do. A great example comes from Switchroot Android. The latest update for the Android 10 version uses a device tree that identifies the Switch to other devices as in a Nintendo Switch (the previous versions showed as NVIDIA Shields). The Switch's stock firmware locks it to 1080p60, but the v1 is actually capable of outputting up to 4K30, and this capability is unlocked in Android and Linux. However, the TV sees a "Nintendo Switch" and assigns it the Switch profile. The Switch is then informed that the TV only supports up to 1080p60. Absolutely hilarious, and this bug has existed since at least the 2018ish models when Game Mode was new (haven't tested before that). That seems to be part of the issue with the first HDMI output on the A4A-that output is the only one that registers as the A4A and not the original host, and it likely is assuming the A4A is incapable of outputting anything better than 4K60/1080p120. It's also possible that the aforementioned A4A self-reporting issue is causing this behavior, but given I've seen this before I figured I'd mention it. Xbox Series X The big issue on this device is just that it takes whatever the output device says as law. On Windows, you can force your way over HDMI, be this by virtue of the GPU driver or some capability Windows has that Xbox doesn't expose. The audio passthrough issue seems to be worse on Xbox than other devices, but it's possible that it's just because my other devices don't support Dolby. PS5 The PS5 is able to override most of the bugs of the other devices, but has one weird quirk-when put through the A4A, while it seemingly can do proper video passthrough, We are prompted to redo HDR calibration every single time the device turns back on/is reconnected, even though the display information should be exactly the same. Additionally, though this isn't much of a bug and more of a missing feature, you can't properly control color space etc. for HDMI outputs on the PS5. Anyway, not sure if there's much I can do about this, but I highly doubt any of these companies care enough to help, so at least I get to rant. If anyone has found a solution, I'd love to hear it.
  3. Hi, I'm pretty new to Proxmox and KVM (Have used a bit of VMWare and Hyper-V before) and wanted to virtualize my gaming rig on my desktop, so that I can run a couple servers aside it without the need for additional hardware. Current Hardware Setup: ASRock X470 Taichi Ultimate Ryzen 7 2700X 16GB DDR4 @ 2400MHz (OC to 2666MHz, but has been stable for ages) Sapphire AMD Vega 64 I managed to get so far that the GPU gets detected in the Windows Guest (Device Manager) and that the drivers installed with these tutorials: Pci passthrough - Proxmox VE PCI(e) Passthrough - Proxmox VE In the tutorial it noted that the Vega 64 has some sort of reset but that will keep it from being available after a restart (which I can confirm.) However, I'm having problems getting the GPU to output video from the VM at all. Passing the GPU along with it's Audio Controller (10:00.0 and 10:00.1) (or enabling "full functionality" in Proxmox with 10:00) will result in the VM failing to start (just sits on black screen, both on the virtual display adapter and on the GPU) Passing only the GPU (10:00.0) without the audio controller to the guest will allow it to boot and get detected in Windows, but it does not properly output to an attached monitor. All I get is a garbled/glitched image on the POST screen, and then that just stays unchanged. An attached vGPU will output fine to the Proxmox interface (well, until I turn the VM off and then back on, but that's a different problem I think). I would be super happy if someone could help me. I'm not really an expert in terms on Linux. If you need more info, feel free to ask. I just don't really know what to give you. ~LightJack05
  4. Before I start, I'll just get this out of the way: I know truenas isn't very highly regarded as a hypervisor for virtualization whether it be core or scale, but hey they're trying so I figured I might as well try too. If I can't resolve this issue after this forum post, then it'll likely be over to proxmox with truenas and other vms underneath for me... Anyway, onto the issue: I'm trying to get a VM up and running but having difficulty with passing through my USB controller. I finally got it separated out to a IOMMU group where it's all alone, however I now get a new error: Error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/middlewared/plugins/vm/supervisor/supervisor_base.py", line 165, in start if self.domain.create() < 0: File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/libvirt.py", line 1353, in create raise libvirtError('virDomainCreate() failed') libvirt.libvirtError: internal error: process exited while connecting to monitor: 2022-09-04T22:23:30.894130Z qemu-system-x86_64: -device vfio-pci,host=0000:02:00.0,id=hostdev0,bus=pci.0,addr=0x7: vfio 0000:02:00.0: failed to setup container for group 2: Failed to set iommu for container: Operation not permitted During handling of the above exception, another exception occurred: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/middlewared/main.py", line 176, in call_method result = await self.middleware._call(message['method'], serviceobj, methodobj, params, app=self) File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/middlewared/main.py", line 1293, in _call return await methodobj(*prepared_call.args) File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/middlewared/schema.py", line 1272, in nf return await func(*args, **kwargs) File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/middlewared/schema.py", line 1140, in nf res = await f(*args, **kwargs) File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/middlewared/plugins/vm/vm_lifecycle.py", line 39, in start await self.middleware.run_in_thread(self._start, vm['name']) File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/middlewared/main.py", line 1208, in run_in_thread return await self.run_in_executor(self.thread_pool_executor, method, *args, **kwargs) File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/middlewared/main.py", line 1205, in run_in_executor return await loop.run_in_executor(pool, functools.partial(method, *args, **kwargs)) File "/usr/lib/python3.9/concurrent/futures/thread.py", line 52, in run result = self.fn(*self.args, **self.kwargs) File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/middlewared/plugins/vm/vm_supervisor.py", line 62, in _start self.vms[vm_name].start(vm_data=self._vm_from_name(vm_name)) File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/middlewared/plugins/vm/supervisor/supervisor_base.py", line 174, in start raise CallError('\n'.join(errors)) middlewared.service_exception.CallError: [EFAULT] internal error: process exited while connecting to monitor: 2022-09-04T22:23:30.894130Z qemu-system-x86_64: -device vfio-pci,host=0000:02:00.0,id=hostdev0,bus=pci.0,addr=0x7: vfio 0000:02:00.0: failed to setup container for group 2: Failed to set iommu for container: Operation not permitted I have no idea what to make of it and haven't been able to resolve with any of my googling and guide reading. Overview Budget (including currency): 2000 - 5000€ Country: Sweden Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: - Games - VR - Programming - VMs - 3d software (Blender) - GameDev (Unreal Engine 5) - probably some AI stuff (neural networks, image generation, etc.) - CUDA compatibility is a plus in some cases - no video editing or streaming plans - no mining Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): - practically no existing parts - I'm planning to buy something before the end of the summer - resolution and refresh rate: I'm planning to have 2 screens, either 1920 x 1080 or 2560 x 1440 (I don't think I really need 4k) and I want to try 120Hz since I've never tried it before. Also it would be cool to have great colors, brightness etc. (But I assume it has mush less to do with specs of the PC). But also I'm thinking about buying a VR headset and I assume it's basically 2 quite dense high resolution screens. Intro Hello! A short intro about me: I want to get an advice in 2 areas: - component selection for a PC build - organisation of storage for multiple devices (I'll talk about it in the end) Computer part Overall I want to have some latest components like: - a modern cpu like i7, i9 or Ryzen - a modern GPU: either Nvidia 30** or AMD equivalent (or maybe 20** if it makes sense) - a lot of DDR5 memory (32gb or 64gb) - pci 4.0 NVMe SSD or 2+ Tb (ma-a-aybe 1 tb will be fine as well) - mother board, PSU etc, that will support it Preferences: - I would like it to be silent. Not as silent as possible at all costs, but quiet with reasonable performance compromise. (e.g. 5% less performant but 30% more silent, or 20% quieter for extra $200 etc.) - I don't want any RGB, I want it emit as little visible light as possible (I don't mind some small indicator LED's, but not glowing fans) - I want it to be AIR Cooled, water cooling looking quite neat for me TBH, but I want to make sure nothing can leak anywhere as I want to be able to leave it running unattended (or minimize the risk of doing that) - I want it to be stable rather than cutting edge performant (no BSODs, no burn out components etc., so I guess less overclocking to be on the safe side) Note: down in the text I ask questions like "Which Nvidia cards support GeForce now?". While I can google such information I do ask it anyways because: - you may have some not obvious knowledge (e.g. "rtx 3080 support it, but 3080Ti does not", or "all 30** support it but it's unstable on AMD CPUs" etc.) - if you want to recommend me a particular piece of hardware (e.g. Ryzen 7 3700x) I want you to be able to consider these additional requirements in the form of question (e.g. will it support GeForce Now) Special needs: That's the biggest reason to create this post. - good virtualization capabilities (mostly GPU passthrough) - remote access technologies (e.g. vPro https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/business/enterprise-computers/resources/kvm-over-ip.html) - and potentially some other non-obvious features 1. Virtualization I really wanted to have setup that uses VM tech heavily for a long time. What do I need it for: a. separation and isolation of working spaces. I want to be able to fully isolate an environment which I use to work, from one I use to game and from ones I use to download a sketchy software to try it out etc. b. repeatability and repairability or OS state. i.e. I want to be able to create snapshots of states, apply and manage them freely. (E.g. I want to be able to install 100 mods on Skyrim save a snapshot while it works, then install 30 mods more, realize it's broken now and go back to a working state snapshot.) c. get best of Linux / Windows world. - I want to play games, use some software (Photoshop, Unity, Unreal Engine, some less popular ones) - On the other hand I want more control over my system, I want to be more sure it does not spy on me, that it will not decide to reboot and install super urgent updates when I go afk for an hour etc. d. why not dual boot: I have it right now on my laptop and it does not work for me. I want to be able take a pause on my work, go to another screen, play some CS:GO, then after 15 minutes go back to my code/3d-project/etc and continue here. Or even switch back and forth while I'm dead etc. So the need to reboot kills it for me and one of the systems slowly gets forgotten. How I see it working: - I have a host machine setup - it is connected to needed peripherals (screen, keyboard, kvm-switches, etc.) - it has a hypervisor installed (VirtualBox, or most likely Qemu/KVM) - the hypervisor is able to pass the GPU to the VM's so I expect them to gain close to host performance (at least 90%) Whenever I want to play let's say Skyrim, I run a dedicated VM with ready to go setup, it appears on one of the screens, while I still have my linux desktop on another monitor so I can watch youtube meanwhile (it's an example). If I want to work with UE5 I run it separately as a VM as well. If a friend created a hello-world game and send me it as `totally-not-a-key-logger.exe` I can safely run it in a VM as well. If I want to work on my docker based project I can run a linux based VM. If I liked a really promising GTA5 mod that extends the gameplay dramatically, but it patches a bunch of exe files and is published on some smallish website nobody ever heard of I can easily install it inside a VM far away from the workspace where I store I credit card details and pay the bills. etc. Hardware support Why am I writing all this rather software configuration stuff here is because I want to buy full VM friendly hardware. Most obviously I want to be able to passthrough GPU. I tried it in the past unsuccessfully and got stuck because of some Nvidia specific issues. But I tried it with the hardware I had on hands. Now I have freedom to choose stuff which is proven to work fine. So the questions I have for this part are: - What should I look for a good VM support in CPU's? As far as I know virtually all modern CPU's support VT-d, AMDvi etc. But I might be missing something big here. (e.g. whether it matters to have integrated GPU etc.) - Is there a difference between Nvidia vs. AMD right now? As far as I remember there was in the past and Nvidia drivers are more 'closed' ones so it's harder to do some of that stuff with Nvidia's cards. And it was even recommended to buy AMD ones. - Is there a difference within the same brand of GPU and what to look for there. e.g. let's say it's known that 30 series support Passthrough while 20 series don't. - Should I have some considerations choosing some other components? e.g. DDR5 memory does not work with VT-d (as an example) and I would like to know something like that. - It would be great to see some ready to use proven to work setups. - I'd appreciate any feedback and personal experience with that system. - How much software I can expect to run this way? Will I be able to play AAA games, or performance would be far from host? Will I be able to play CS:GO or I get immediately VAC banned because they'd detect I run it in a VM? Will I face lots of instability? Frequent crashes, BSODs etc. Remote control capabilities. vPro? I find it really useful sometimes to be able to remotely control the machine, and I mean to control all of it, including OS installation and restoration, BIOS settings etc. This can be achieved with KVM-over-IP setups. But as far as I understand intel support something like that natively (vPro, AMT etc.) Here I want to understand: - if it's worth to have it? - does AMD have something similar? But overall I can easily sacrifice it if it requires a performance drop, significant price increase or lack of other features. Nvidia GeForce Now If I understand it correctly this (and probably other similar) technology allows not remotely control the host, but game on it with some comfort. I expect to see some picture quality / framerate drops as well as some reasonable latency increase. Of course I don't expect to be able to play CS:GO competitively with such setup but it'd nice to be able to play some slow to medium paced games (Skyrim, Sims etc.) remotely. The question is: - is it limited to Nvidia? - which Nvidia card support it? - does AMD support something similar? - is it worth it? How I want to use the PC - as I mentioned before I want to be able to use VM's extensively - play games - play VR games - software development - 3d modeling - game development Programming I want to be able to have many IDE instances opened, a few dozens tabs of stackoverflow and potentially a few VM's containers running. It's one of the reason I want to have some extra RAM. But from CPU / GPU perspective I expect to be way lower than AAA game consumption. In some rather techy applications it may be beneficial to have CUDA cors (if a piece of software is only support CUDA or optimized for it) 3d modeling Sometimes I feel like my laptop struggling with my highly unoptimized Blender models, so this area may benefit from an upgrade. Game development I really want to try out new UE5, but not even dare to install it on my current laptop. So it would be great to be able to play with it. I don't think I need enterprise level gamedev working station though. Something that is suitable for indie gamedev would be good enough. Games I plan to play a few older titles and I want to highlight a few modern-ish titles I have interest trying out or playing. (it actually would be nice to know if some newer hardware does not support older games e.g. Morrowing won't launch on rtx3090) Older ones: - TES Series (Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim) + lots of mods - GTA5 - CS:GO Newer ones: - Insurgency: Sandstorm - Escape from Tarkov - Witcher 3 - Cyberpunk 2077 (probably) VR Gaming I don't know what to consider in regards of VR Gaming. I'm not sure I'll buy a VR set right away, but I want the PC to be able to handle it in the future. I'm leaning towards buying Valve Index in the future. Game-wise I'm looking for: - Half-life: Alyx - Skyrim VR and any other compatible titles. Network and organization of space Previously I described only the tower part of the setup. But besides the case I expect to have more equipment in the future: - PSU - ethernet network switch - NAS - some smaller network devices (e.g. raspberry pi) - KVM-over-IP device - separate server like pc etc All of that will be interconnected through wired network and power lines. If I keep all of it under/on the table it would supper messy. So instead I thought about storing and running all of in some sort of a shell. Something that looks like a server cabinet, where I can put my tower pc, some other devices and manage external cables. Plus I can put a few fans there to help cooling the PC and other devices. Questions: - Is it a reasonable thing to do? (or e.g. it will inevitably lead to overheating) - What can I use as a cabinet/shelf? The real server cabinets cost quite a lot and I don't think I need them. I also found this server looking shelf in IKEA https://www.ikea.com/se/sv/p/ivar-skap-med-doerr-gra-mesh-60483972/ and wondering if it's possible to reuse some general purpose furniture for that idea? --- I'm looking for any ideas / feedback from you
  6. Back story: Planning to build a workstation. Virtualization support in general is the primary aim for me, and a specific feature that is a requirement for me is passing through a USB controller to a guest machine. The intention is that I'd be able to keep a usb device connected to the guest machine, even if the device power cycles. Question: - The main thing I'm not sure about is does the motherboard need to support PCIe passthrough (IOMMU on the AMD side, if I am not mistaken), or only the cpu? - I believe only one of pcie slots is connected directly to the cpu, and the others to an external pcie controller. If so, would the other slots require pcie passthrough support from the motherboard? or would all the slots behave the same? - Is there benefit in going x570, in the context of virtualization?
  7. Hi folks , first thanks for jumping in and reading this post . Now let me give a little backstory for my problem, I have an Asus ROG strix gl502vs that I have bought probably 4.5 years ago, this laptop has been through a lot, and long story short it's physical missing a battery, not all the keys on the keyboard are working, and due to it missing a battery it hard crashes randomly (something about the video driver looping etc , but I'm pretty sure it's because of a spike load and because the power brick can provide it , vid driver crashes). I can still play on it but I can't do something serious on it as it can crash on very important moments and I lose all my progress etc. Now the other half of the story is that I don't have a desk,ie no space for a desk, so im working/gaming from my bed. So I looked at small factor cases and in theory if I can find someone that would build something / find a few products and hacking them together for low profile desk, and then maybe I can have a desktop with keyboard, mouse and monitor, but then I will have to deal with cooling it, as I live in a hot country, it's also very deserty tldr allot of issues with cleaning and cooling, so not an ideal solution. Another solution that I have looked at was , external GPU, and then I scratched that idea immediately because it will draw some extra power to power the port, and my laptop will sometimes crash when I plug in my phone to charge or battery pack or even my cooling surface (can't mmber the name , but the thing with the fans that you connect to the laptop and put it under it ). Another easy solution, pay for a battery and keyboard replacement and fixes (some contacts are missing from the PCB), it won't be cheap , but it's not a long term solution as my laptop is getting old and newer titles are harder to run (mainly because of the weak CPU). Lastly, my real question and a solution that I think might be possible, but couldn't find someone with the exact setup /I have more questions about is using my laptop as at least a monitor to a medium/full Tower PC(so down the line when I move I have a good tower, upgradability etx) that I can shove under my bed , and clean it every month. So can this be done? I think my one of my USB ports is USB 3.1 , so could it be possible with it ? Is a KVM a solution here ? If I connect a KVM where is the processing done( I guess on the same machine where the monitor is so mby it's not a solution here). What about input lag ? Any other thoughts ? Thank you
  8. I am planning on having a dual GPU setup on my next build, with my primary being RX 6800XT, and the secondary (used for VMs) would be GTX 1060 6GB. When the PCIe 4.0 slot is on x8 mode, would the 1060 be outputting on x16 (because it's on PCIe 3.0, instead of 4) or x8? Also, how much of an effect would running on PCIe 4.0 x8 on a new GPU, like the 6800XT? 9. Hey all! I'm planning on putting an 8600GT in a computer with an RX570. The reason for this is to use its native VGA with my CRT monitor (which matches the sleeper case I have for it ), which throws fits when using DP and HDMI to VGA adapters. From what I know about laptop graphics, you can switch a program to use dedicated graphics from onboard solutions; but what happens when you have two discrete graphics cards? Is the age difference too large between the two cards to use any form of pass-through? If it matters, the board I'm using these in has an X370 chipset, with one of the two x16 PCIe slots running at x4 (preferably with the 8600GT) and will be paired with a Ryzen 2600.
  10. I'm looking into consolidating my PC's by putting my normal Windows desktop into a VM ontop of either FreeNAS or unRAID. The idea would be that TrueNAS / unRAID would handle all the same stuff my current NAS does (manage storage pools, set up network sharing, Plex library hosting, etc.) while I reserve some CPU and GPU power for my Windows VM. The question I'm unsure of is this: if I have a single GPU (namely an Nvidia RTX 3060ti), can it be used for both the host NAS OS and in the VM for display capabilities and hardware video decoding at the same time? Or would I need another GPU entirely to allow for this?
  11. Hey there, My Server is using Proxmox as Hypervisor (KVM backend) to spawn VMs. I wanna use the HAB (specs) to passthrough my 4HDDs to a TrueNAS Core VM. In order to do that, I first enabled the IOMMU support in the BIOS/UEFI. After that, I booted into Proxmox and checked whether IOMMU is detected. It spitted out the following output [ 1.332679] pci 0000:00:00.2: AMD-Vi: IOMMU performance counters supported [ 1.344441] pci 0000:00:00.2: AMD-Vi: Found IOMMU cap 0x40 [ 1.345378] perf/amd_iommu: Detected AMD IOMMU #0 (2 banks, 4 counters/bank). which in my mind means that IOMMU is already enabled, even if I never configured it in the GRUB cmdline. I also checked the IOMMU groups, to validate the HBA is in its own separate group. [...] IOMMU Group 25 2d:00.0 Serial Attached SCSI controller [0107]: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS2308 PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS-2 [1000:0087] (rev 05) [...] And in fact, it is in its own dedicated IOMMU group. Did someone encounter this before, or is my understanding of IOMMU at some point wrong ? Server Specs: - AsRockRack X570D4U Mainboard - AMD Ryzen 5 3600 - x2 16GB Crucial Micron ECC RAM - x2 Seagate Ironwolf 4TB - x2 WD RED 4TB - LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS2308 HBA
  12. Hey y'all! Just watched the new video where Linus talks about NVIDIA GPU passthrough. Here's my question. Can I use passthrough on my RTX 2070 to send NVIDIA Broadcast from my gaming rig to my streaming rig which has a GTX 970 which, as you probably know, is not compatible with that software? Or is that just not what passthrough is for? He talked a lot about Linux use cases but I'm not on a Linux machine. It's Windows 10 on both. Thanks in advance!
  13. TLDR: Skip to paragraph 2 Hello there fellas, need some help with ESXi passthrough shiz that i tried to get going with my home setup. I've got a Gigabyte x570 Aorus Elite Wifi and have recently switched to ESXi from Proxmos. My main objective was to have a Windows VM with a 1050Ti that i had lying around and some usb peripherals like my kb, my mouse and my headphone dongle. I have 4 sata drives connected to the MoBo, and an NVMe drive which has the main Windows VM. The ESXi host is on the Sandisk Ulta Fit. So i created a very basic windows vm and then passthrough the nvme drive, passthrough the gpu, did the cpu.v0 = false configuration to get away with the dreading code 43 also passed through the wifi adapter meh just in case. After all that the main issue i'm currently facing is with the USB passthrough. My Vm boots up i got display but i cant control anything with my keyboard and mouse tried adding a PCI usb card and passing that through with no luck. Any suggestions or inputs or am i doing something that terribly wrong and i should adjust ?

My VM is stable and functional on VNC, but as soon as I pass the GPU through, the VM Crashes. I'm new to Unraid, but I work with virtualization a lot. While I knew this would be a learning experience I didn't expect to get this stuck. I plan on using the rest of the resources for various server applications including plex, and some smart home automation. I'd rather run it this way, because once I have it working, it will be more stable than trying to run it on the machine that I work, game, and learn on. I want my VM to output to my monitors through the GPU, but I seem to be failing at even getting the GPU to work on the VM. It outputs for Unraid when I'm not trying to give it to the VM so I know it works. All the hardware appears to be functional, but I can't seem to get the pieces to come together right. Any advice would be much appreciated. I saw in a video that you may need to hand the vbios for the GPU through to the VM, but unfortunately my card is the one 30 series card for which Zotac seems to have failed to have a vbios download available. I feel I've tried just about everything but running windows bare metal on the machine to see how that performs. As LTT seems to be the home of doing weird things with Unraid, I was hoping this might be the place I could get assistance as Unraids discord has only been mildly helpful.
  15. Hi everyone and thanks in advance to anyone that can help! I'd like to ask if anyone has experience with what i'm planning to do. I'm planning to upgrade my current UNRAID server that also host my virtualized desktop. My intention was to take a Z490 VISION G from Gigabyte and pair it with a I9-10900K. The idea behind the Vision G was because has compatibility with Gigabyte Titan-Ridge Thunderbolt 3 add-in card. (i want to connect the virtualized gaming pc to my livingroom TV with small thunderbolt3 dock) My problem is that i have zero experience with this whole Thunderbolt 3 add-in card world and I'm not sure that i'll be able to passthrough it to my vm without any problem, especially because it requires that strange TH connector. So my question is: is there anyone with experience in this? Any suggestion? Thanks! P.S. Sorry for any mistakes, I'm not a native English speaker.
  16. Hello! New to the thread, fan of the channel. I'm looking to build a system I can fit in a short depth rack mountable server case to full multiple roles. (1) Whole house NAS and Time Machine backup for all the MACs in the house. (2) Plex media server with hardware encoding (3) Minecraft server for my kids. I think I'd like to use Proxmox as the hypervisor for all the VMs but I'm at a loss for choosing the hardware. I'd like a decent upgrade path as well incase I get crazy and want to create some virtual gaming machines as well. Any Solid advice for hardware would be greatly appreciated.
  17. is there a hardware/software solution to get console sound to play on pc like any other windows program would? (with no or a small delay and 7.1 surrond support) i know xbox console companion streaming and ps4 remote play exist but i would like a more universal solution that would also work with other consoles e.g. switch, xbox 360 and future consoles
  18. Hello everyone, I have some trouble getting PCIe passthrough to work properly on my Proxmox VE 6.2-4. The curent setup I have contains 2 GPUs: - GTX 1070 mini in prmary (top) slot - GTX 770 in secondary slot Passing through PCIe devices works. I have confirmed this by passing through the GTX 770 to a Windows 10 VM which works as expected. My issue is that, when trying to pass through the primary slot GPU, the GTX 1070 in this case, I get no output and the device is not recognized by the VM in the devices manager. Drivers are blacklisted and both cards are configured to use vfio. My current guess is that, since proxmox uses the primary slot for local output prior to the VM being launched, proxmox essentially blocks the device from being able to be passed through. Any ideas on how to pass through the primary slotted GPU would be appreciated as I plan to upgrade to an nVidia 3000 Series card soon and would like to take advantage of PCIe 4.0, which is only available on the primary slot of my Mainborad. Kind regards, PacDDrake
  19. I'm thinking of passing through a PCIe card in a future freenas/unraid setup. Does amd deliberately kneecap cards and prevent non-workstation/server cards from working in VMs, like Nvidia's infamous error 43?
  20. Hey everyone! After much headache with iommu groups, greedy Nvidia drivers not letting go of my secondary gpu, and finding a qemu configuration that actually boots, I'm completely stumped with getting out of this EFI shell using qemu. No matter which firmware I choose, aside from bios of course, which just hangs haha, I can't seem to get the windows install DVD to boot. I've tried going through the shell manually, selecting the FS1, and trying all of the .EFI files, after which I'm told to press any key to boot DVD, at which point I'm just hanging at a splash screen. Anyone have experience with this? I was inspired by Linus's build running all the PCs in his home, doing a little preliminary run with just one vm to figure things out.
  21. I live in a area where only at&t internet or satellite internet is available so we went with at&t. My issue is that the router/modem combo unit they provide has weak wireless capabilities and in general isn't that user friendly with its unchangeable Nat types and so on. I asked if they could provide us with just a modem and and could get my own router they said they don't have a modem just that unit and i cant use my own modem since its fiber and it requires their own. i was told i can use my own router connected to it and just use it as a sorta bridge mode on the at&t router but it doesn't have that option but i could set up a pass through and be very similar. My issue now is that im not sure how to properly set up my pass through and the guides online normally show a newer interface that i don't have or are very specific with not much details on how to get certain information. my biggest issue is that i dont understand the Subnet & DHCP settings and for the passthrough setting it shows my routers mac address but if i go into my router settings it has 2 addresses one for wireless and one for lan and id dont know which to chose as my option is only the wireless mac address one in the passthrough settings and doesnt show the lan address at all. do i have to passthrough both? i dont think i even have a option to do two passthrouh since its only has one field i can enter one address in. I feel like i might be overthinking this but i just want to make sure i get this right so i dont have to guess later on if i have network issues if it was caused by my settings. Any and all help would be appreciated. i can post images too but i dont know what information i should hide so i will provide them if someone tells me what to hide.
  22. Hello everyone, I have this strange error which shouldn't occur. Error starting domain: internal error: Process exited prior to exec: libvirt: QEMU Driver error : Unable to stat /dev/dri/by-path/pci-0000:00:02.0-render: No such file or directory It seems like you can't stat this path, but when I run stat /dev/dri/by-path/pci-0000:00:02.0-render It shows the info, like stat should.
  23. After talking about my upcoming new PC build a friend told me that Intels Virtualization technology (Vt-d / Vt-X) is way faster than AMDs (V / Vi), and that if I want to pass a PCIe device through to a virtual Win10 guest system, I would get a hefty performance penalty on AMD because their Ryzens are not designed to directly access/control IOMMU groups and that I HAVE to get an Intel system to avoid those problems. There were some numbers during the conversation, ranging between "about 90% of possible fps on AMD, maybe less" and "at least 30% performance loss on AMD". Though I find one forum post on tomshardware with the "best answer" claiming Intel is "better" with IOMMU, I can't find any reliable data on that topic, especially if it comes to PCI-passthrough. I never heard about any noticable performance differences between team Red and team Blue regarding virtualization myself, which is why I planed to go for a Ryzen 7 / X570 based system on Arch Linux, including a Win10 guest system with a 5700 XT passed through for games. Hope you can help me out here, I really don't want to buy unsuitable hardware.
  24. I often find that the documentation on this subject either leaves a bit to be desired, doesn't emphasize some really important aspects, or is just downright hard to follow at times. Because of this, I wrote my own tutorial that primarily sources personal experience on the topic in an effort to drastically improve the available documentation on the subject (in a sort-of verbose nature). One of the goals of the tutorial is to show the reader examples and explain why things are being done so that the reader comes away from the tutorial with a better understanding of how PCI-e passthrough works overall. Feedback is highly encouraged! Submit an issue or pull request if you think the tutorial needs further improvement. I'm also open to suggestions of any kind. https://clayfreeman.github.io/gpu-passthrough/
  25. Hi, I need some help passing my gpu to my windows vm. I'm using Arch Linux with the latest kernel and the following gpus: GTX 1080 (which is placed in the first pcie slot to get x16, so it is used as boot gpu) GTX 1050 Ti (which is placed in the second last slot and only gets x8) IOMMU is supported by all devices, the gpus are in different iommu groups and I don't have an iGPU I want to passthough the 1080 to my qemu vm and use the 1050 Ti for the host system (maybe it's even possible to use it as boot gpu?) Is there someone who can help me getting there? If I forgot some information feel free to ask.
