  1. Hello, I've read various threads here and other sites on the issue but i sincerely can't wrap my head around it so i decided to ask bluntly I recently put a Samsung 850 Evo on my Mac as the main drive (the one where the OS and other things are stored) and i don't understand what are the advantages of having TRIM, if there are problem with this particular drive's TRIM and OSX, if it is enabled on my machine and if it isn't how to enable it. As you can see these are lots of interrogatives, i essentially popped the SSD in its place, made a clean install of the OS on the drive and dumped all the files that i needed on it. My end goal would be to keep the drive alive for as long as possible without drastic performance drops in the meantime. Somewhere i've read that TRIM shortens the life of the SSD but it keeps it fast the whole time but somewhere else i read that it is essential to having it enabled if you don't want your drive to live only for few years. Which is the truth? (Yes i also watched the FastAsPossible! ) As you can see on this screengrab of "Information about my Mac -> More info" (sorry for the Italian :P) it says that there isn't support for TRIM, does that mean that it's simply not enabled or that i can't have it doesn't exist yet for this specific model? If it's simply not enabled and i should enable it how do i do that? Sorry for the bajillion questions, if something is not clear let me know and i'll try put it more simply
  2. Nope, Apple Computers Aren't More Secure Than Windows. They're Just Attacked Less By Jeff Stone of International Business Times Source: http://www.ibtimes.com/nope-apple-computers-arent-more-secure-windows-theyre-just-attacked-less-2334220 Once thought to be virtually immune from cyberattacks, Apple's Macs and Macbooks have become popular targets for hackers. PHOTO: REUTERS OK this is not new or anything (at least to this forum) but its News according to the media..... Basically the columnist concludes that Apple is not better or worse than Windows when it comes to security. The only difference was and still is the focus of the attacks. *take axe, cut knees of Apple owners* Honestly I don't have much of an opinion to add that can be construed as informative other than that I and many others have been spouting this for a while. This is the opposite of the position taken in this article; http://www.zdnet.com/article/sorry-to-say-that-apple-platforms-are-still-more-secure/ Another take on the article supporting that OSX has no inherent security built-in that makes it better than Windows; http://www.infosecurity-magazine.com/opinions/macs-are-safer-than-pcs-right/ I want to say Duh, but since I am a nice guy I wont . . . Just read the article. No Flame War, Please.
  3. Hi so a friend of mines Macbook pro has started to act up recently. The model is a 2013/14 one with an i5 and 500gb hdd. It's taking minutes to just open something like chrome. And takes forever to even turn it on.We've done the pram and smc reset and it's still done nothing. I know it's a hard drive and they slow down but not to this extent, it's basically unusable to the point she can't get any school work done. And no she cannot upgrade to an ssd as that's too expensive. Any tips guys?(preferably without having to open the Mac up as she doesn't want to do that) She came to me cause she knows I'm a techy guy but I've tried and so far it hasn't been working out. Any help would be great thanks
  4. We'll soon be ordering the parts for my wife's new custom Mac. She needs OSX for music production and we're going to hook her up with Windows so she can finally get around to going through her Steam Library. Each OS will have its own 250Gb Samsung 850 EVO. But for general mass storage we have a 500Gb Seagate HDD in the plans for both to share. So far things have worked out okay with her MacBook and my Windows PC sharing over our NAS, but these drives will be directly connected to her system. But just to be safe, is there anything to keep in mind when two OSs on a dual-booting machine share a single storage drive?
  5. Hi, I'd appreciate some advice on a build to replace several machines that form a small business network / development lab. 2 osx machines 1 running OS X Server (DNS, AFP Shares, iTunes sharing, Web Server 3 websites, xCode Server, Owncloud) 1 running plex serving iPads video (24x7) 1 dell 2850 running FreeBSD, own cloud, development Web server (runs 40 hrs / week 1 dell 5100 running freeness (24x7) 1 iMac running OS X and multiple VM's (windows 10 , Ubuntu 14 LAMP stack) (40 hrs week) 1 NZXT H440 with custom build, X99 Deluxe, 5930 i7, 16GB ram (DDR4), evga GTX 980 an SSD and several laptop drives in Raid 0 (Currently Gaming machine) Current total data size is 12 TB, excluding back-ups. My day job i develop for the web using symfony 2 and javascript, php, jquery etc over multiple customer lamp stacks . I also develop for iPhone / iPad using xCode Current problems: the iMAC is a little under powered to run the VM's it has 32GB or ram but the disk is very slow and could use replacing for SSD and not enough Core's to run the VM's at realistic speeds The Dell server disk subsystem is incredibly noisy and low capacity probably at the end of it's life ? No overall consistent easy way to manage all of the different servers when working locally or remotely No way to run continuos integration testing of web development Possible routes forward: 1 - Replace the disk subsystems in the dell and iMac for hi capacity (might not be possible in the Dell 2850) 2 - Build a rack mounted dual Xeon Server with lots of core's and run all current devices on it as VM's 3 - Upgrade the NZXT CPU and hard drive system 4 - Move it all to AWS or some other cloud service Current network backbone is Cisco Switch 26 port 1GB want to get some link Aggregation going XEON Build I'd like to do Dual 26xxV3 CPU's with a boat load of memory (DDR4), PCIE NVMe SSD and a storage array. Need some advice on power supplies and mother board, graphics and cases to use thinking a 4U rack case would work. Ideas advice welcomed
  6. So if i am using a virtual machine to run osx do i still need to make sure my hardware is compatible?
  7. Anybody running successful hackingtoshes ? What are your specs ?
  8. I've seen these around and figured it would be a fun and helpful topic for everyone to get involved in. The idea is simple: Post your best script that you or someone else wrote which you think is really useful. The only restriction must be that it should be in something that most users have access to (e.g. either bash (your terminal), python, perl etc) Also kinda useful if you could explain what it does So here is mine: #!/bin/bash pkill feh if [[ -z $DISPLAY ]];then export DISPLAY=:0; fi getWall(){ find ~/Pictures/Wallpapers/ ! -path . ! -path "*.old*" | shuf -n1 } applyBorder(){ convert $1 -gravity center -background white -extent $2 $3 } #applyBorder $(getWall) 1920x1080 "/tmp/wall1.png" #applyBorder $(getWall) 3840x2160 "/tmp/wall2.png" FILE1=$(getWall) FILE2=$(getWall) feh --bg-scale $FILE1 --bg-scale $FILE2 This is a quick n dirty system I have for putting random wallpapers on my desktops. It uses feh for the actual displaying, and optionally imagemagick to apply a border, although I commented it out since in the end I didn't like the effect.
  9. Greetings. I had grown rather attached to a certain feature of OSX called 'Quick Look', which would bring up a quick preview of a selected file by pressing the spacebar, and would allow me to quickly navigate through files with the arrow keys. However, the Windows 8 photo viewer does not allow this, and instead takes up the entire screen. Is there an app that performs similarly to Quick Look? (Or even OSX Preview, for what it's worth). Regards, Aereldor.
  10. At a computer repair shop that I work at we do both PC and Mac. For the Mac stuff we have these LaCie drives with all of the OSX versions in Bootable Partitions and Installer Partitions. Pretty straight forward. BUT! For some reason that we have not been able to narrow down, the Installer partitions for OSX 10.4, 10.10, and 10.11 open in finder windows whenever the drives are plugged in or when a system boots from them. The other partitions do not do this at all and we have not been able to narrow down what the cause is for these partitions. If anyone has overcome this annoyance or even has it themselves, it would be fantastic if you could let me know. Its definitely not a huge deal, but when I do this several times a day it gets very annoying. Attached is a photo of what I am seeing. The Finder windows that open are the stripped down ones that appear when doing something like viewing a package contents.
  11. Okay, so my wife needs a new computer. Her old MacBook has been on its last limb for years. We're going to build her a new PC. She needs OSX because of Garage Band. No flex on this. Believe me, I've tried. But with Windows she could finally start getting through her Steam backlog without needing to be on my PC. So the question becomes: "What would be the best way to handle having both OSX and Windows on the same machine?" There's really only three general ways to do this without getting into the details: 1) Windows main with OSX running in a virtual machine 2) OSX main with Windows running in a virtual machine 3) Dual boot (software switch on boot or hardware switch on cold) Again, without getting into specifics about what VM software and so forth, which would be the better option? If you have knowledge or experience with dealing with OSX and Windows on the same machine, please chime in.
  12. So my wife needs a new machine since her old MacBook has sustained enough heat damage to make it unreliable at even the simplest task seemingly at random. She needs OSX because of Garage Band. (No flex on that) But with a Windows install she could finally start getting through her backlog of Steam games without needing to borrow my PC. The parts bellow were all checked for OSX compatibility against the current customac buyer's guide. http://www.tonymacx86.com/building-customac-buyers-guide-january-2016.html Her current CPU is an i5 running at 2.5Ghz and it handles everything she needs, so there wasn't much of a need to go all out on it. She doesn't have demanding needs as far as gaming is concerned. I honestly think the most "graphically demanding" title in her Library is Life is Strange. So I figured a GTX 950 is likely more than enough for her for the foreseeable future. The two 850 EVOs would be boot drives, one for OSX and one for Windows. The Seagate drive would act as a share onboard mass storage. She wouldn't need much of that though since we do have a NAS. A case hasn't been selected because that's a personal choice she'll have to make. I only know to expect something small and we'll probably end up putting pink lights inside. Questions: Are there any (Mac compatible) changes that could be made to this list to get a better value? A 430W PSU is probably overkill, 350W would be plenty, but I haven't seen smaller PSUs from reputable brands at lower prices than the CX430 I picked. Any recommendations here? Does anyone know of a recommended SATA power toggle switch? Something that can be used to physically switch power between the two boot drives so that only one is powered at any given time? Most of the ones I've seen are for 4-5 drives at once which seems a bit excessive and the only ones for 2 seem to be all DIY. Recommendations on this would be greatly appreciated.
  13. I'm new to the mac world and launching stuff just feels slow on my new retina macbook pro, but I've noticed the same thing happens on my friends macs. The Sata III SSD in my desktop running windows 10 manages to launch word and give me my document in less than a second, if not two. Whereas my macbook with a pcie based SSD, takes a good 5+ seconds. I'm a student with little to no time to waste. WHAT THE HELL! My Dad's old Celeron notebook with a Sata II SSD launches word in roughly 2-3 seconds, and even that beats out my 2015 macbook. Is this just an OS X limitation or what. Yes using safari and stuff feels fast, but launching stuff takes forever. (yea yea first world problems 5 seconds) Pages seems to launch faster, but launching system preferences just makes me mad. Just WHY DO YOU NEED SO MUCH TIME! Am I going insane? Is it just me?
  14. Hello , Recently my company decided that we're going to use iPads for our Sales Agents . We have a lot of products with their prices , descriptions etc set on excel spreadsheets and i need to transfer all these to 5 iPads (Mini 2 no SIM card) I read that i should use iCloud to do this , but will they be able to access the spreadsheets once they're out of WIFI range ? Thanks in meanwhile .
  15. Hey guys, I have been trying for two years now to try and get Yosemite on my older PC. It has not amazing specs, but it can run win 10 fine. Here are the specs CPU: Intel Core 2 quad Motherboard: Asus P5Q Graphics: Zotac GT630 Ram: Unknown Brand (8gb) I wont list PSU and case...but if you need to know any other specs... let me know. I have been trying for two years like i said, and i didnt really touch it this summer again, but i have been able to get it to mavericks, but when i try to use the Yosemite update tool for Niresh, it doesn't work at all. And when i try installing Yosemite, it never works. Is there something wrong with my hardware? Cause as far as i know, nothing there seems to sound like a problem.... 16. Hello! I am new on LinusTechTips and I am hoping to join a good community that can share some helpful insights. I haven't built a PC in over 15 years, and I was travelling a lot so I used a laptop (Macbook Pro) more than anything else. Now that I am settling down with my family, I am craving to build a good quality Workstation and occasional gaming PC. Budget: More or Less $2000-2500 Main usage: On a daily basis I use a Macbook Pro for work, which include running Office Suite, coding web apps, maintaining web servers and quite a bit of Photoshop and Illustrator. I want to transfer some or all of these tasks to a desktop for more comfort while working at home, and when my wife allows it, sneak and play some AAA games for 2-3 hours. Choice in OS: This is where it is tricky for me. I have always loved OSX for my daily computer usage (photo editing and especially coding), and I prefer to run code on a UNIX base OS than Windows. I found Windows tedious for running languages such as Ruby, maintaining databases, and I am more comfortable with Terminal than Window's shell. I have experienced some issues with some of the Microsoft softwares on Mac (such as their CRM...), so I had bootcamp on my macbook pro and it works fine that way, but its a bit of a hassle to jump from one to the other. So for my new PC I will first install Windows 10 to enjoy better compatibility with all the Microsoft softwares we use for work, and benefit from playing some games. I was thinking I could replicate on the new PC something similar to Bootcamp with a second SSD drive with either Linux or OSX (if at all possible, but I read that over time it can run issues with driver compatibility) in the event I need to work for a couple of hours on a UNIX system for coding. OR invest in a second monitor and have my macbook pro connected to it, but switching mouses and keyboards is also a hassle . What are your thoughts on this? The build I am thinking: Probably a pretty standard build, nothing out of the ordinary, though you may have some better suggestions! . Prices are for new components, I could probably find cheaper at resellers or (slightly) used. PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($216.99 @ SuperBiiz) I was initially thinking of using an i7 and thought it would be more useful for graphic design work (photoshop and Illustrator) with hyper-threading. But $120-150 difference is a bit steep, so I am still considering. I do some graphic design and photo editing but not extensively, so I am not sure if Hyper-threading is entirely necessary. I do run quite a bit of tasks behind when I run a web server, running code in the background, and doing other stuff on Excel, Word, Photoshop at the same time. What do you think? I was also considering a Skylake processors, mostly for investing in the future with the compatibility with USB 3.1 Type C. If I go with Skylake, the costs of Memory and Motherboard will also increase. CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i GTX 70.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($104.99 @ B&H) I will Overclock the CPU for the fun of it, but probably not by much. Seems like Overclocking modern CPUs doesn't change much. I could go with a Heatsink and Fan like the Be Quiet, Noctua or Cooler Master (cheaper and they look nice), but takes a lot of space in the box and may get a bit too close to the RAM sticks. Thermal Compound: Arctic Silver 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver 3.5g Thermal Paste ($6.39 @ OutletPC) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($108.99 @ SuperBiiz) I wasn't sure which motherboard to go with. This one had good reviews on newegg and pcpartpicker. I appears to be built with quality components and has onboard sound. Only 4 PCIE slots, so I can either do a SLI/CF bridge between cars, or 1 Graphics card and a sound cart + network card (optic fibre modem and router are not in the same room unfortunately). Up to 32Gb DDR3 Ram, but I will be using probably 8GB. It also has 1 M.2, which I don't know how to use yet. And plenty of USB 3.0 and 2.0. Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($47.99 @ Newegg) I could go for more (useful for photoshop) or with a higher clock, but I don't really see how I would need it. In your opinion, should I go 2x4gb or 1x8gb? I could go for other brands, but I don't really care as long as it works. Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($169.89 @ OutletPC) Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($108.99 @ SuperBiiz) I can fit 2 SSD in there, mostly for running the OS, and coding files. Read & Write speeds on many code files is pretty important in my opinion. For Media storage 2TB HDD is good enough, I am however worried about the sound it makes, and how long it will last. HDD have a tendency to break quickly and you need many of them for backups. The other concern is the HDD cage is not in an ideal location in the Corsair Air 240. I could place the HDD under the graphics card, but it clutters the machine a bit. Alternatively I could go with External Hard Drives Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB Superclocked+ ACX 2.0+ Video Card ($659.99 @ Amazon) Mostly for my hours of fun on the machine ^^. Since this is a new build, and I don't have other cards, might as well invest in the best I can afford. When it starts getting old, I can buy a second one for SLI goodness. For Photoshop, I don't think this card affects much... Case: Corsair Air 240 MicroATX Mid Tower Case ($77.99 @ Micro Center) Between administrative paperwork, work paperwork and mommy and baby stuff, I don't have much space at home. So I want to go with a Micro ATX. I love the Corsair Air 240 case because I could have it sit on my desktop next to my screens and still have some work space for the macbook pro and paperwork. I also like the Corsair Air 240 because it looks fairly easy for someone who hasn't built a custom computer for many years. The window is a plus to see my achievement Power Supply: Corsair RM 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($119.99 @ Amazon) On PCPartPicker, it says my max wattage is about 471W, so with a 750W PSU I have some room. I considered a 650W, but if I decide to upgrade with second GTX980ti, then the wattage may go up to 680W. Build quality looks good with sleeved cables and fully modular. If its energy efficient, great, but the electricity bills will still go up with this machine (by a bit) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM (64-bit) ($89.88 @ OutletPC) Case Fan: Corsair Air Series AF120 Quiet Edition (2-Pack) 39.9 CFM 120mm Fans ($24.15 @ NCIX US) Case Fan: Corsair Air Series AF120 Quiet Edition (2-Pack) 39.9 CFM 120mm Fans ($24.15 @ NCIX US) Noctua fans seem great, but I hate the colors. Corsair Fans look good. I think 2 fan on the top (liquid Cooling radiator) and the back (if it fits) for Outake, and 2 fans on the front for Intake. Until I get the case, its hard to figure out the fans placement. Monitor: LG 24EA53V-P 60Hz 23.8" Monitor Already purchased monitor that is usually connected to my laptop at home. I could invest with the remaining budget in a second monitor 1440p to go with the Geforce Keyboard: Logitech G710 Plus Wired Gaming Keyboard (Purchased For $129.00) Mouse: Logitech G502 Wired Optical Mouse (Purchased For $79.00) Total: $1968.38 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-10-28 05:11 EDT-0400 Extra Parts: - I might need additional Dust Filter or grills if I can find - Sleeved cables. Its an investment that will make the machine cleaner and nicer in my opnion $80 So what do you think? Thanks! Zed
  17. Greetings, I just finished installing windows on a partition on my 2009 MacBook Pro via bootcamp. However, now the system only boots into windows. I inserted the OSX install DVD as instructed in Bootcamp Assistant to install my hardware drivers. However, after installing CD/DVD sharing, it crashes whenever I try to 'remote install OSX' using the same OSX install DVD. At this point, do I insert the application DVD that also came with my mac? Also, how do I install the necessary drivers? Thanks, Aereldor.

  20. Hi, So next summer I am going to be moving and switching jobs. The new job will require me to reloacte every 1.5 - 3 months and I will need my computer with me at all times. I will be selling my current computer right before I move, just so I don't have to bring it with me. My current situation is that I'm using a Hackintosh. I do own a Macbook Pro as well, and I do prefer the OS to Windows (although I do have a second OS drive with Windows 8.1 for gaming, which also gets a lot of use). I've found that for the software I use (namely Avid software like Pro Tools and all the necessary drivers for the current audio gear I own) OS X runs better. However a Hackintosh is not without problems... It took me a LONG time to set up and still doesn't run *perfectly*, although it is stable at the moment. This has presented me with a few options. I can either: _______________________________ A) Save up lots and buy a Mac Pro (trashcan style). I would be looking at at least the 8 core version and would like 64GB of RAM, although I would likely buy this third party as it's much cheaper that way. I would also get the dual D700 GPU, so that I can have a top gaming experience in Windows 8.1/10 (boot camp), although this is subject to drivers... I've seen lots of people saying it works and some saying it really doesn't... B) Get the same Mac Pro but with the least expensive GPU and build a Windows rig on the side. Likely an ITX, very compact rig with something like a 980ti C) Build an X99 Hackintosh based on the 5960X. This way I would be able to choose my GPU, but then I would be stuck with the same potential issues I have now, that it could just decide to give up on me if some settings aren't right... _______________________________ Now, considering I'll be travelling a lot (I have an Impala, '03) I won't be able to go for anything huge, which is why the Mac Pro really shines, because it's so tiny for all the power it packs. Also the stability of running OSX on a computer built for it is priceless. BUT, it's also very expensive and the lack of any additional internal storage is very annoying as i'll have to carry round a few external drives too, or build a NAS which is even more cost... Option B is probably the option I would go for if money was no object. I could have the best of both worlds, wouldn't have to worry about compatibility and it wouldn't take up too much space (something like a Corsair 250D or even smaller). Building a Hackintosh could be really good. I was thinking of possibly buying a rackmount flight case (so, extra protection in the car) and if I were to use a 4U chassis in an 8U flight case, I could keep my other audio gear in the same flight case and have it permanently linked up. All I would need to do when I get out the car is plug it into power and monitors. This is also more cost effective (although it would still be expensive), but it then comes with the worry, time and effort of putting together a Hackintosh... I was looking to potentially water cool as well (if I go for option C, which would come out kind of like Linus' personal rig in the near future), but how would this hold up on the road? Is that just a really bad idea? I feel like that's another benefit of the Mac Pro. I would have a flight case for that too (basically a hard box with foam inside, they only cost about $150) but I feel like that would be a lot better on the road.... Any thoughts on this are helpful. Basically I want something that will run cool and fast (hence why I don't just use my laptop with a few monitors), work well, game well, be roadworthy and also compact. This is still about 9-10 months off, but I'd like to have a plan as soon as possible, even if I pick parts when I'm out there. Thanks!
  21. Ok, first off, I don't care weather you like apple or not. Ive been having trouble finding some cheaper (a little older) apple iMacs,Macbooks, etc that cna run Yosimite. Does any one know what the cheapest apple device that can run OSX would be? Thanks!
  22. Hello all! I just have a few questions about turning my current custom PC into a Hackintosh. Question 1- Does GPU matter? I have a GTX 970 Strix atm and I really don't want to buy a different one now because that would almost be the cost of a Mac mini because I want to buy another 500gb ssd just for OS X. Question 2- I have a MSI Gaming 5 motherboard. It is on the list of compatable ones according to TonyMacX86 but I heard gigabyte was really compatable. Also I don't want to deal with digging in my PC and replacing a motherboard. Should I deal with it and replace it? Will it be too annoying to bother?
  23. So was trying to install kali linux on my iMac and in the process I installed a boot manager called rEFInd. After installing it I decided to uninstall it again by deleting the boot.efi file located in my core services folder. I used the terminal to delet it. I ran the code sudo -r -rf and the directory of the boot.efi to delete it. Now when I turn on my iMac and hold down the option key I only see the recovery partition... Any help please? I wouldn't want to loose any of the information on this hdd. Thanks in advanced.
  24. I can't take it anymore. I've had a MacBook Air for a year and a half, and I don't know how I've lived this long. OSX just has some really annoying points in it, particularly relating to Fitts's Law, but that's a post for another day. For now, I can't live without window snapping any longer, and OSX El Capitan's implementation is weak as it only works with OSX's Fullscreen Mode. I know most of you guys aren't Mac people, but if you're on here, and you have a Mac, then you have most likely run into this same problem that I have. So, anyone know of a good 3rd party program that implements this window snapping? I would prefer if it worked with OSX El Capitan, and was free, but I'd be willing to pay a little bit if it came down to that.
