NCIX: N/A Amazon: http://geni.us/ZcG Did Linus' OS X software experience surprise him in a positive way, or did it put a damper on the beauty of that 5K retina display?

So I had some quick questions, I have my PC for gaming and Macbook for everything else. I was just wondering opinions on: Should I be using an antivirus / malware on my mac? Does the OSX file system require defragging? In your opinion Should I keep OSX? or should I install windows 8/10 or linux. Cheers

Phoronix test performance of OS X 10.10 vs Ubuntu 14.10 on a Macbook Air, Ubuntu wins
Guest posted a topic in Tech News
Phoronix.com - a site dedicated to reviewing Linux and Unix distributions and performance of various hardware on them has posted a compilation of various performance benchmarks (disk performance, synthetic video benchmarks, game framerate comparison and compile times) run on the same 2013 Macbook Air with Ubuntu 14.10 performing as well or significantly better than OSX Yosemite in most of them. The one possible criticism of the benchmarking procedure is that the Phoronix Test Suite doesn't include any proprietary benchmarks, like timed video renders on popular proprietary editing suites, but the author assures that Source -
Heyo! I have beenworking on my dream machine for mainly video editing, rendering and light gaming. Lot of multi tasking also. Oh, and by the way. Its a Hackintosh. HACKINTOSH FTW One quick note, I am on my iPad, so please excuse any typos. Here is the PC-Partpicker file: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/qNPWyc Now, before you start critizing me about stuff, let me explain. 16 GB of ram is plently for the level of work I will be doing The 970 is perfect. Thanks to a quick replier who helped me with this. Cheers! The second 120GB SSD is just a scratch disk which I will use to hold current video projects so its super fast in FCPX and other programs. Also I will put the low capacity games there like Minecraft and steam games, just so they are fast to boot. The crucial SSD is for boot of course, and it doesnt get the best speed but it has great reliability. Of course, I have an extra set of old HDD's which i will use as a full system backup. The boot SSD and 3 TB ssd will be combined into a fusion drive using this article's method: http://www.macworld.com/article/2014011/how-to-make-your-own-fusion-drive.html The case has a nice design and will cool the ram, gpu and HDD's as the CPU is cooled using a water cooled Nepton series cpu cooler. Case fans. My idea is that the front fan (for the HDD's) and the Dual 120mm rad will be pulling air into the case, and the back fan will pull air out. Is this sufficient? This is the best system i could think of in this case, as that would will all the slots for fans. Phew Now, the motherboard is gigabyte, because they are famous for easy hackintoshing. The PSU should be sufficient for now, so dont go crazy about only 750watts. So any input would be amazingly helpful. This is my first build, even though i have torn down many computers and put the back together, and replaced hard drives and cpus. This should be a breeze. Thanks!! Sorry about the random pic of linus, as it wouldnt let me send this without an attachment.

Ok, so my 13" MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) is connected to my schools servers. After I installed Yosemite it stalled at 50% during booting, and after repairing Disc Permissions in Safe Mode, it booted as normal. Then after a while again, I suddenly had to use my backup and load it in, because when I checked Disc Utilities using the Cmd+R command at boot, it said I had 8,5Mb left. The strange thing is that the Macintosh HD partition on the drive (I only have that single partition, btw) says I have 227Gb available, which is correct. I can store large files and delete them as normal, but I tried installing Mavericks again, and it just stops the installation saying that it "can't be completed." Several other people in my class have had problems with their Macs after upgrading to Yosemite, but our IT department didn't tell us to ignore Yosemite until all our Macs had failed. I just want to be able to use Mavericks again, so I know I won't have any problems with my schools server configurations, but again, my Mac won't let me. Any ideas on how to fix this without letting IT have it for two weeks, and/or not buying a new HDD?

Okay so in Feb I start at Uni, and I am looking at a new laptop, so I was thinking a Macbook Pro or Air, failing that I was looking at Cyberpower or Utopia PC. I really want something I can do programming on and a bit of light gaming, as much as I hate using things other than Linux, I need stability, and normally distros I like are not stable. My requirements for my laptops are these. Good battery life - About 9 Hours, give or take one or two hours. Good performers - i5 Haswell, dont need i7. Slim design - not quite ultrabook, but slim, disk drive not needed, I have USB3 drives everywhere lol. Light gaming ability - Simcity, FTL, Kerbal, maybe even Borderlands at a push. Light weight - I plan to be carrying it around. Good keyboard - For programming worst comes to worst I can use a keyboard. 8GB+ RAM - 16GB would be ideal as I want this laptop to replace my desktop sometime. SSD - 128GB I can easily live on, but 256 is always nice . Good screen - Hate shoddy screens, IPS would be nice . Mobile GPU - Nvidia/AMD or Iris, no HD 4/5k series please . Screen size - Has to be 13", I hate big laptops. OS - Windows 8.1 or Mac OSX, just for ease of use, desktops for Linux . VM - Ability to do basic OS VMs. For programming I will be using JetBrains and Eclipse. and will be doing a lot of Java and python, maybe some web languages as I am going for computer sciences. So should I get a custom built laptop, or go Apple? Many Thanks! (This is a more indepth- update version of my previous post, didnt think of custom laptops last time

Hello, When I installed mavericks on my current PC, I made a 50GB partition on my hard drive (With an SSD for Windows) which was not formatted yet for the OSX installation. When i got to the disk utility settings on the installation, I formatted this 50GB space with the "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" from the tutorial here: http://www.macbreake...ith-niresh.html When i finally got the OS installed, I let it update ect and used it for a while, I restarted back into Windows 7. From here going to My Computer, I noticed that i couldn't access my hard drive and from here, All i could think is that the OS installation formatted my whole HDD loosing important data. I managed to repeat this process with no important data that could be lost on an old PC with a 500GB for the current windows and made another 500gb partiton (which too, did not get formatted until disk utility setup) for OSX and this PC used 1 HDD and got the same results, the whole HDD got wiped. I managed to install windows 7 on this old pc no problem with a OS selection screen on start-up, but what can I do to stop this happening in the future? (apart from buying a seprate HDD), as my friend wants to dual boot windows with OSX. Mark.

You all probably heard about the Celebrity Nude Scandal when iCloud accounts were comprimised around 2-3 weeks ago. Now, there is a reported bug in iOS 8 and OS X. First it was heartbleed, but now there is a possibility of a bigger BASH bug. http://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/national-international/277016451.html?_osource=SocialFlowFB_CTBrand iOS 8 when it first came out introduced a lot of bugs, lower battery life, slower WiFi, and even higher crashes. Then Apple quickly worked on an update and released iOS 8.0.1. This came in with even MORE bugs and some users are reporting Touch ID no longer works and they can even no longer get service on their phone. Many are recommending not to update, including trusted reviewers such as MKBHD. So basically, those who paid $1000.00 for an iPhone 6 Plus and waited tirelessly in lines basically have a giant iTouch now. There is a way to revert back to the bug-filled iOS 8 but require quite a bit of technical knowledge, which most of the iOS community generally doesn't have. These phones were created to give an easy and smooth user experience, but instead is causing a lot of frustration. http://www.techtimes.com/articles/16256/20140924/users-complain-of-ios-8-problems-shorter-battery-life-slow-wi-fi-crash-rate.htm https://www.yahoo.com/tech/apple-pulls-ios-8-0-1-update-that-caused-some-users-to-98321257444.html https://www.yahoo.com/tech/apple-releases-ios-8-0-1-fix-but-users-report-major-98319076134.html http://news.yahoo.com/hundreds-users-reporting-serious-bugs-ios-8-0-172321887.html?pt=BureoF2GVB/ On top of all that, there were also received complaints of the iPhone 6 Plus being bent in peoples pockets and sometimes even the iPhone 6! http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/breaking-fad-new-iphone-bends-pants-pockets-owners-article-1.1950696 http://money.msn.com/top-stocks/post--users-claim-iphone-6-plus-gets-the-bends?ocid=ansmony11 http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2014/09/24/evening-news-roundup/16159079/ There have been claims that things like this happen to all phones of that thiness and height. But, there has been solid proof that it doesn't.

I want to sync my outlook calendar to the included Calendar app in osx. I usually add events or anything to the outlook calendar from my WP8.1 so I needed both to be synced without me having to install Outlook on the mbp. Anyone have any idea how to do it? I've searched for solutions all over the internet but still can't find it. I'm new to osx so please be as detail as possible. Thanks.

Hey guys so I have this macbook pro and it keeps giving me the beach ball...It seems weird to me because it isn't getting hot or anything. it boots up like normal and opens up applications like normal as well...except when opening safari..or any browser that I have tried. I have tried using chrome and firefox as well as opera and I've been having the same results. As I was trying to check my model number it took the mac about a full minute to open up the options. If anybody could tell me how to fix this problem that would be great thanks (FYI I have nothing else opened other than safari) Specs: Running osx 10.8.5 Mid 2010 4gbs ram 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 3MB on-chip shared L2 cache 171.03 gbs/ 250gbs Normal hdd (link for full specs) http://support.apple.com/kb/SP584

I was watching The WAN Show the other day and thought the idea of running Tails (live) from an SD card was pretty cool. I've been considering triple-booting for a while, so I went to work. The goal was to keep my bootcamp partition intact, and just be able to choose to boot onto Tales from the SD card by holding down option on startup. I downloaded rEFInd and Tails. To make sure the internal HDD was clean, I partitioned the SD card to allow just enough room for rEFInd to run on an OSX Journaled partition - and just over 8GB in a FAT32 partition to run Tails on. I've had great success booting from the Tails Boot DVD I burnt, and went through to 'clan and upgrade' onto the correct partition. Everything looked pretty good - I'm able to insert the SD card, hold down option, select SD card from bootable drives to launch rEFInd, and view all 3 OS that are available. (OSX, Win7 and Tales). The problems start here. When I select OSX - it'll boot to OSX When I select Win7 - it'll boot to Win7 When I select Tails - it'll boot to... ...Win7 I am able to insert the Tails boot DVD and run from that, as well as following the previous options (only with the boot DVD inserted) - and it runs fine. (But only runs from the DVD). I know it HAS to be something to do with boot files getting mixed up - as I've heard a lot about that issue. I'm currently investigating LILO and other boot managers, but I have little to no experience in Linux. If anyone could help, it would be so amaze. Thanks, saya_kucing

WHAT IS YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE NEW OS X 10.10? My thoughts. 1. PhotoBooth is missing? Well maybe its just me, I did not have success to find photo booth, well I use photo booth a lot taking just simple photos of when I am sending emails and stuff, and when it is missing I quite don't get where apple is going here when they include a camera on all of their computers not counting mac mini and mac pro (and thinking that apple tv is not a computer) 2. I love the new look Holy crap, I just love the new layout and the design of the new OS. It looks so simple, and so premium, well I looks like I cam finally say that apple has consistency with heir devices. The thing I like the most is the transparent design of the design. Well I don't know why, but its awesome Only thing I don't like is the buttons, feels like different style would work nicer. 3. I heard that Final Cut pro dose not work. Well even though I have the application, I cant even open it, it has this random x mark in the application. Maybe this is the thing, but I read that is that crashing is the problem? Can you guys tell me whats the problem? or the problem I am having is the problem? but I don't really care since I use premier and AE. Well that is some of my opinions on the new OSX 10.10. What is yours? do you just hate Mac and Apple it self, well I think its amazing, and I am more use to it so I like it more than my PC sorry PC fans out there but, No matter what people say I think that Macs are a great Laptop to cary around with. - Phantomore

Hello LinusTechTippers. I have been using the Func MS-3 for a while now(since i saw Linus video about it), and i love it. The thing is that i just sold my desktop pc and bought my self a Macbook Pro since i moved out by my self and the apartment is too small to hold my gaming rig. I WILL be installing Win7 on the Mac, but in the meanwhile i would still like to use the Func MS-3 on my Mac. The problem is that when i connect the mouse to the mac nothing happens, and i suspect the USB ports on the Mac do not deliver enough power... am i right? And i am afraid this problem will still be present even with Win7 on the Mac. Would love if someone could give me a solution or explanation on why my beloved MS-3 will not work:) PS: If you read this post Linus, please tell your friends at Func to make their peripherals Apple friendly^^ PSS: Please don't make this thread a discussion on why i bought a mac!

So I just bought an SSD and im on a macbook pro 13" 2012 So I can open it up and do upgrades. But theres a problem. I have not only the OSX partition but a windows 7 partition on the same drive. Is there a way to clone the WHOLE drive including both partitions to the SSD, or do the cloning separate but not have any overlapping or destruction of my data. Thanks.

Hey guys! So I built my computer in January as a PC running on Windows 8. All's going really well. I'm a big music guy and I love the programs that Apple support and offer, as i've learnt from my old, beaten up MacBook Pro... Recently, though i've been thinking about installing Max OSX to a seperate new HD or SSD in my system in order to have 2 PC's in one in essence. Now, I was just wondering if it would be viable to buy another hard drive and install OSX onto it, so that if one day I decide i'd like to use my music programs, I can, and then another day i'll move back to windows for my gaming and general needs. The way I would do it would be to completely have 2 seperate HDs and if I want to switch OSs, i would go into BIOS and boot off the different drive. How practical is this? Thanks!

Hi LTT First of all, I'm sorry if this isn't the right sections for questions like this. TL:DR I'm looking for a solution to share my photos from my Linux NAS to Windows and OSX. If you would read the full description it would much appreciated, because there's more to it than that. I have a ton of photos, especially after a recent trip to Australia, don't worry this will be somewhat relevant. Obviously I'm interested in keeping them safe and most importantly share them with friends and family, preferably in a smart, elegant and beautiful solution/program. To begin with I'm going to explain my setup in theory, hopefully this simple graph will help you understand the explanation. Lets cross off some of the simple stuff. The two stored HDDs is two old WD 320GB HDDs. I'll basically copy the picture folder to them, disconnect them, put them in anti-static bags and leave them on a shelf. I might consider to place each of the HDDs in a remote location in case of theft or fire. To make it even easier I might search into something that'll just update the HDDs to the newest revision of my NAS's picture folder once connected. Now I think things start to get a bit more complicated. For many years, the way I've organized my pictures was something similar to this c:\Pictures\Event1, c:\Pictures\Event2 and so on. I think you get the picture. For the last 4-5 years however I've used OSX's iPhoto and I really enjoyed it, even though it was the '09 version, the new one is supposed to be a lot better. What I really like about it is that I can add comments, location, map and more, so in brief add a lot of different metadata to pictures and albums. I'm sure you can do this with other programs as well, I just haven't tried anything else than iPhoto, which is why I've come to you for help. Back to my travel photos. A lot of the photos was taken with my iPhone 4, which I discovered added a nice little pin on a map of where the photo was taken. It is crucial for my solution that I'm able to use this metadata. Imagine when I'm going to take a look at those pictures in 10-15 years, I would not be able to remember 90% of the places where the photos was taken but the GPS coordinates that's tied to the pictures will help my memory. To justify Time Machine it would require the photos to be stored on the OSX system as well, which I'm not completely sure that'll do as it will utilize a fair amount of GB and those GB are only expanding. This is how I'll imagine I'll watch the pictures. From OSX (Mac) via Apple TV to TV From XBMC/Plex (Raspberry Pi) to TV From HTPC (Windows) to TV Obviously I'll only use one of these solutions, either Linux, OSX or Windows, at a time. I still want to be able to sit at my Windows machine and be able to watch them even though I primarily use the OSX and Apple TV. So is there a program/solution that'll work across all OS? I hope this is enough information for you guys to be able to help me. Please let me know if there's anything I should clarify, explain further or even review my explanation. Cheers Shaqalac.

Hey guys, I am going to buy a Notebook soon and I narrowed it down to the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro Retina. The only problem is that i can't decide between these two and I don't know if the MacBook Pro is 300 Euros worth over the MBA.

So recently I realized we are actually doing things the wrong way with our OS versions. The big three(linux, windows and OSX) are made for certain types of work but barely get used for it or atleast less and less. this is what i mean, OSX. It is meant as a production OS for visual/sound effects(VFX), and other pretty intensive jobs(rendering). It is mainly coöperation based at it's roots. It is pretty presented in it's meant fields but also missing quite a bit and more people these days are getting macbooks/imacs to replace their homebased windows systems. note: i added intensive jobs there since OSX delivers with certain software applications better speeds/results then on a system with the same specs. windows. It is meant as a home/office OS wich isn't meant to be put under heavy load or 24/7 operating. Being the world wide most sold OS it surely does fill up these categories, but people are pushing the limit more and more, in the meaning of doing things with it, like heavy duty tasks as rendering, the software is made for it and the hardware might be capable of running it. But the OS it's self isn't made for it, wich slows down the process. There are also some people who use normal windows for things like cheap servers or network machine's. linux.(and all it's distro's) Linux is actually meant as a server OS wich allows to be changed in whatever way the server admin/owner wants it to be, with all the distro's it is becoming more and more desktop/laptop orientated, with android it gets even phone orientated, wich doesn't always work out with the low compatability of software meant for home usage(like office) The amount of developers for linux is rising, but it is still a server OS at it's roots, wich makes it not really suited for a home pc wich gets shutdown after running 2-3hours. With steamOS coming out I'm pretty sure even more devs will jump the linux train, wich is a nice thing, but the fact stays it is a server OS and every distro has it's own compatability problems with certain types of software. I might sound simple minded in this, but I am actually wondering how some OS can just completely miss the target and get used for things they wheren't meant for, but let's not forget the phone's ofcourse wich are also mainly form these three main OS versions. IOS, it is meant for bussnis type of people, with it's quick look on market share's and easy acces to the dairy, being less focussed on production it is still able to deilver quite the performance and quite a few options when it comes to webbrowsing with Safari(like dev console wich shows the amount of errors and in what kind of language the error can be found) But it is more used as the normal/common type of phone, the android sales might be higher, but when it comes down to a single product(iphone 4 as example) it get's sold more, altough the gap is closing slowely. But with every app in the appstore taking 2 weeks of approval(before it is released) ensures you of the fact that a virus is rare or just not possible, by wich the not being able to download form outside the appstore also works. Windows Phone, being the smallest of the three and pretty underestimated by everybody it is still a quite good OS for the phone, all the people I know who used it(3 people) had nothing but positive feedback over it. It is quick, stable and easy to work with. android, In my opinion the hardest OS to give feedback on, this due to all it's variations wich get made by the companies that produce phone's with it and the high amount of versions on the market of it. I had once the ability to keep a samsung phone and a lg phone next to each other, both with the same android version installed. A quick rundown, samsung had their own things added to the phone while LG didn't have that, wich resulted in the following, 2 appstores(google play & samsung play), 3 music player apps, 3 ways to view photo's along with alot of other useless features wich couldn't be reached since i didn't have a samsung account, on the samsung. On the lg the start screen looked the same, but behind that it was quite diffrent, needing only a google account was a godbless, since nearly everybody has one(or two) besides all the samsung only content not being there it felt much more natural and responsive to me(could be hardware diffrence) so android it's ain't that bad when it is as it's meant by google, so here it actually proves that the ability to change everything is actually it's downside as proven thanks to samsung. But with the ability to download apps form outside the appstore and apps not (always) being controlled on malware is a little downside, but not OS side. So with this said, why are we not using OSes as they supposed to be? is it human nature or just lack of information? I would like to hear your guys opinions on this, since mine is already given and I would like to know how others think about this. TL;DR OSX=production win=consumption linux=server OSX=/=consumption win=/=production linux=/=desktop ps, the part about the phones wasn't planned(like most of the things typed down) but it just popped in my head and it seemed to be fitting to me.

Hey LTT, quick question regarding hackintosh hardware. I was looking at this GTX 780 Classified, and I was wondering if I could use it for hackintoshing. Anyone know if it's compatible out of the box, or if I could flash it? Also since its dual BIOS, does that mean I could flash one BIOS to be a "Mac" bios, and the other to be a PC BIOS, and then I could switch between performance and compatibility when I needed?
