Hello LTT community! So for the past few years I have been using a Macbook, and really want to switch to a windows based one (possibly one of the razer blades). I am not here to get help picking a laptop, but help looking for a program that will allow me to use the gestures on the mac trackpads such as: Swiping up with 3 or 4 fingers reveals all windows Swiping left/right with 3 or 4 fingers goes between different desktops Pinch to zoom on more applications (not really too important for me) I know windows 10 has all of those features, but not with the gestures to activate them. Has anyone developed something that would give me features like those? These are the only things that made me get a MacBook in the first place, its so convenient. Thanks in advance for anyone who helps me out

Hi All, I am helping make decisions about a class at my high school in which we will be making videos and it will basically be a film making class. We have decided to use Premiere Pro for editing (we're buying all of CC for the rest of the software that we probably will need). We also will be using Pro Tools for audio editing as it is the industry standard and we want to train the students for the real world in which they would be working.* One of our main points of contention is our debate between Windows and Mac. Personally, coming from a Windows background and liking to nerd out about computers and play with technology, I prefer Windows.** One of the administrators I'm working with thinks that we should go with Mac since it is more common in the industry, and since there has to be some benefit to Mac, otherwise most people in the industry wouldn't be using Mac. My argument is that the savings that we will get from Windows machines could be put to better use being spent on things that more significantly improved the education and experience of the students. I also argue that since we will be using CC software and Pro Tools, the OS underneath won't make much difference as the majority of the student's time will be spent in the software, and not dealing with the OS. I don't foresee any significant differences between software functionality between Mac and Windows. The administrator's argument is that there has to be a reason for creative professionals to be using Mac, and that possibly there will be better compatibility with a wider range of storage options, or maybe a better user experience. Another concern for using Windows is how much we will lock them down and restrict the access and abilities of the students. Some of the members of the tech dept. are of the mindset of locking it down as much as possible, while we think that it would be better to leave them somewhat open so that the students can have a bit more freedom with how they use the computers. Most of the people in the tech dept. are more experienced with administering Windows than Mac. We will be planning to edit at a max of 4K resolution at a bitrate of 100Mbps... We will be consulting with the teacher of the class regarding their preference, as they will be the ones that will be dealing with it day in and day out. My question(s) are as follows: Is there a difference between the functionality of Premiere (and the rest of CC) and Pro Tools between Mac and Windows? Am I correct that the difference in price between a Mac and Windows system would be better put towards better cameras, lighting, or audio equipment, and that improving those would more significantly improve the education of the students? Would macOS work better with external storage systems or audio/video equipment? General system recommendations are of course welcome . Would Macs last longer than Windows machines and would service be better than a Windows system**? Would teaching students on Windows disadvantage them in the real world of the film and TV industries? Why do most of the production houses and "creative professionals" use Macs? Is it just history, prejudices, and marketing, or is there a real difference in functionality and/or user experience? Any general feedback is of course welcome. In total, we will be getting 6 video editing stations, 1 audio recording system, one audio design system, 1 teacher's computer, and maybe 1 or 2 other computers. We would like to keep them all the same computers so we don't have to deal with 10 different models. Each of the systems would have at least 2 displays (maybe going to 3 or even 4 if they have the capability to project to the rest of the class). *We also understand that Media Composer does have the majority of the market in the film and television industry but believe that it is too difficult for the students to learn. We also have been told that Premiere has begun to become more popular in the industry and that we wouldn't be hurting the students by teaching Premiere instead of Media Composer. I'm welcome to comments about this decision as well. **We will not be building our own systems. We will be buying pre-built workstations from Dell or HP, or if Mac, of course Apple. Edit 1: We will be editing completely on the network since it would be easier to deal with since if a group/student was editing on one machine and if it failed or another group was using it, they could go to another system and simply keep working without the hassle of moving video files around. Is this practical, and would this change the OS choice?

I am having trouble getting the internet from my windows host to passthrough to my mac osx vm. I have the vmnet driver shared by my wifi network, and I don't know what else to try

I am trying to get internet working on a OSX el capitan VM on my Windows Host Machine. I am on windows 10. In VMWare I have guest tools installed on the OSX VM. In windows I have two VMWare Network adapter drivers installed. VMNet1 and VMNet 8. I have tried a combination of sharing those with a combination of bridged network for the vm and NAT network for the VM along with either DHCP enabled within OSX and just entering everything manually. I am very confused at this point because nothing has worked so if anybody is experienced with VMware that can help me it would be much appreciated, I don't know what else to try.

So I was able to install Mac OS X 10.10.1 on my PC and I was wondering if there was a program for monitoring temps, specifically GPU temps. I tried a program simply called "Hardware monitor" but it only showed my hard drives.

So I built a pc, here is my parts list http://pcpartpicker.com/list/K7ZYcc CPU - Intel 5820K (6 cores - 3.3hz) GPU - NVIDIA 970 Motherboard - X99A SLI Krait 64GB RAM 1TB Samsung EVO SSD 250 GB WD HDD for OS and storage CPU Cooler - Swiftech H320 X2 Prestige I am a VFX artist/video editor. I built a PC thinking HitFilm 4 Pro would be enough but its not nearly as good for fast/simple NLE. I want Final Cut and Garageband on my PC so I searched and found the following video. My questions: Can my computer components do this and run OSX efficiently? If I partition (Windows 500gb and OSX 500gb), can I share data (video footage) across the partition? If so... can I make a 3rd partition as a file storing zone? (Windows 200gb, OSX 200gb, and Storage 400gb) Can I have the operating systems on separate drives? (WIndows on the 250gb HDD, Storage and OSX on the 1TB and still pull files from the OSX drive to the WIndows Drive) Anyone know what the most powerful NVIDIA GPU (HitFilm doesn't work well with AMD) that works with OSX? Thanks in advance, Another Enthusiast

Is the Mac Mini (Mid 2011) Processor Upgradable?
Guest posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
So I've been trying to upgrade my Mac Mini (Mid 2011) recently. Specs are: Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.5, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 [dual core], 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Memory (after I upgraded from 4GB since RAM pressure was 70% at idle), Standard 500 GB 5400RPM Hard Drive (which I intend to replace with a suitable SSD and no, I don't know what SATA or anything about hard drive/SSD connections, so if someone could shed some light on that, that would be great), and obviously integrated graphics with AMD Radeon HD 6630M 256 MB :P. So no, this isn't intended to be a gaming rig, but I do intend to use it for at least 5 more years as a productivity workhorse. I suppose that I have a few questions: 1. Is the processor even upgradable, or did Apple sodder the CPU into the motherboard? 2. If I am to upgrade the CPU, are the motherboard, heat sync, fan, etc. able to take the extra heat that will likely result from the increased processing power? 3. Can I upgrade the AMD Radeon without worrying about heating problems? I couldn't see discussions like this anywhere else online, and I DEFINITELY do not want to go to any Stack Exchanges (considering troll admins shut every legitimate question down, seemingly). Thanks! -V -
Reinstalling OS on MBP 2010
Friendly Hippo posted a topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
Hi! I had a 2010 MacBook Pro whose drive died on me and I left it alone for a while. I recently got a 120 GB 850 evo to try and revive for my little brother to use. When I boot it up and try and install Windows or OSX from a disc (I have a win 7 install disc and an OSX 10.6 install disc that came with the laptop) it is incredibly slow, much slower than I remember it. The windows install just gets stuck at the "Starting Windows" screen. I left it for 2 days before killing it. The OSX Install gets to formatting the drive. If I tell it to partition the drive as a single partition (Mac OS Journaled) it will do it after a while but the name will never be what I told it to be (I told it to name it OSX and it names it like sc17). But when I get back to the install screen, it doesn't recognize the drive, like it just won't appear. If I tell it to erase and reformat as Mac Os Journaled, it gets to about halfway and then gets stuck with the estimated time just going up. I left that for 2 days before killing it. I have tried resetting PRAM with no further success. any advice? -

I'm 99% of the way finished with my "Hackintosh" build but ran into a issue with OS X accepting my 970... despite having the appropriate driver installed. So allow me to walk you through my process and hopefully you guys could point out where I went wrong. 1. Install VMware 2. Download OS X 3. Run and Set-Up OS X 4. Link Darwin ISO 5. Install VMware Tools (reduces lag) 6. Shutdown OS X and reopened VMware 7. Adjusted settings RAM - Gave 32GB of my 64GB CPU - Gave 4 of my 6 cores Storage - Gave 250GB of my 1TB SSD Enabled 3D Acceleration Set Vram to 2GB of my 4GB 970 8. Ran System 9. Downloaded and Installed NVIDIA Drivers for OS X 10.11.4 10. Shutdown the "Mac" and Reset VMware 11. Results 32GB RAM 4 Cores 89GB (NOT 250GB) 128MB Vram (NOT 2GB) My end goal is to install FCPX and Garageband, so... Thoughts?

So My girlfriends family wants their mac to be fixed and upgrade ect. The only problem is the fix it is to replace the drive. Which I can physically do fine. But the question is do you need another mac to make the install drive? Most things I look up for making the drive is "so you take your mac and....." So the base question is, will any ol' iso maker work?

Have a mac pro 3.1 with zotac gtx 970 so not efi, though for 6 months had no trouble switching between windows 7 and mac osx using bootcamp control panel, recently osx update came along (10.11.5 beta) restarted, i got the chime for startup though nothing else, running osx on ssd, them removed the ssd after power down and booted into windows fine, attached ssd as usb drive to laptop, worked fine and even booting on rmbp, programs work fine etc, but i tried the same on the desktop and while the drive is recognised in windows no cigar when trying to switch just gets stuck in the same chime start up. In the end i decided do a fresh wipe and install except now the ssd will not take a fresh install from the macbook, tried another ssd and hard drive and all failed, had essentials.pkg on all but then also had ones where its saying installing and gets stuck on 24 mins and one where it even gets to yosemite login (from el capitan installer?!?!) have thought of maybe buying a flashed card so i get efi but hope there is a less expensive work around as im looking to sell! any advice welcome i am really stuck, other specs are 2 2.8 ghz xeons, 1tb hd handling windows, 8 gb ram, 120gb boot sd for osx, 256gb other ssd (games) and spare 320gb hd for stuff i can afford to lose, primary useage is 50/50 gaming/photo editing, but i dont max it out/overclock so nothing to intensive, would just be usedful to have this back up and running as i often crunch 100mb 36 mp tiff's for fine art work which normally crash my macbook. update, have a bootable el capitan ssd but still nothing on the boot screen front (only took 3 hours to get that far)

This guide probably applies to the MacBook Pro (core 2 duo) models around this era as well as other macbooks. Alright, here we go. So recently, I picked up an old Core 2 Duo Macbook (A1181) from a friend for 50 dollars. http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook/specs/macbook-core-2-duo-2.0-white-13-late-2007-santa-rosa-specs.html The battery needed to be replaced, it desperately needed more RAM (it has 1GB), and it was covered in what I hope was tomato sauce (but you never know ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)). I managed to get the mac for 50 dollars, which was pretty good. There are a myriad of aftermarket batteries available for this model macbook, but check carefully to make sure that the battery is compatible. Note that these aftermarket batteries aren't going to last as long as the OEM apple model, but you'll still get a decent amount of time off one. One thing that these old macs don't have is enough RAM. This one came with 1GB, which barely cut it for Leopard, and definitely not for Lion. I picked up 4GB of DDR2 667 off eBay for 20 dollars, which improves the experience greatly for cheap. There is unofficial support for 6 gigs of RAM, but it's super expensive for a minimal performance increase. Once I cleaned the (tomato sauce??) off the mac, installed the new RAM (4GB DDR2 667) and replaced the battery, I tackled the software side. My friend had never updated the laptop past OSX Leopard 10.5.8, which supports very few modern apps (adobe CC, steam, google chrome), so I updated the thing to OSX Lion 10.7.5, the last OS supported by this model. (you can buy an OSX lion download off apple's store here, or, if you don't have another mac to download the dmg with, check eBay for Lion disks and USB drives. Once I got my copy, I booted from the Lion USB drive (guide here), wiped the mac's hard drive, and installed Lion. Now with Lion on the mac, I had the ability to run Windows through BootCamp (guide here). Since I had a spare Windows 7 disk lying around, I installed Windows 7 Professional in a bootcamp partition with lion. I bought the key off Kinguin.net, which I can definitely recommend for cheap windows keys (I got lion for 20 dollars from apple, and Windows for 24 dollars off Kinguin). During the BootCamp process, you have to create a driver disk so you have full functionality in Windows. When I went to go install the drivers from the disk in Windows, I got this This dialog is actually fairly common when running BootCamp on older Macs, and I found an amazingly helpful guide on how to bypass this. http://blog.iphoting.com/blog/archives/830-Boot-Camp-on-Older-Intel-based-Macs.html Props to this guy for helping me through this install. Anyway, now you should have your mac up and running with Windows and OSX. There are some great support threads online if you get stuck, since chances are other people have run into similar issues.

I am planning to upgrade to 4K, I have been using 4k for about 4-5 Months now and I am loving it. Although I am not much of a gamer, I do more programming and software engineering this is also the reason that I am here looking for some advice. I have the following computers. Mac book Pro Retina 15 inch (specs) CPU : i7 5th gen 4cores @ 2.5ghz RAM : 16gb @ 1600mhz GPU : AMD Radeon r9 M370x 2gb GPU + Intel Iris Pro And a Mac Pro (non trash-bin model) (specs): CPU: Xeon E5*** 6 core x 2 cpus(so 12 cores total and 24 threads total) at 2.9ghz GPU: Really really bad (has 512MB of memory .... just to drive my displays and work on). RAM: 128GB 1300mhz EEC PSU: No pins available for extensions (I thought i would mention it as otherwise would have upgraded the gpu already) And a windows/linux testing server (specs): CPU: Xeon E5*** 4cores @ 3.2ghz GPU: 2x 7970 (Mostly for opengl and stuff, they for some reason cant handle 4k even together) RAM: 16GB I would love to be able to re-use on off those existing builds and upgrade it to 4k I already have 2 4k screens (they are really tv's 50hertz tough) and I would be fine with having a new (or upgraded computer) just being able to drive one of them but with a stable 50+ fps. As I already mentioned I do not play a lot of games but I am a big Civilization(4&5) Addict and World Of Warcraft and a little bit of EvE and Hearthstone thrown in there. So I would love something that would make CiV5 and WoW run more smoothly as with my Mac Book Pro hooked up to my 4k screen I get about 24 FPS (so cinamatic). So to get to the point. What would be the suggestion on which of the computers to upgrade to get a 50FPS(stable) on 4K game play for the above mentioned games. I would love to be able to re-use the above mentioned systems as those would have to remain running anyway (for work and as servers). I do not really have a budget in mind so not really constrained by this, but would love it to be somewhat normally priced and one very important thing for me is Silence i cant stand hearing my computers. Thanks in any case for the time, With kind regards, Arekana

So HardwareCanuks recently posted this link regarding video render times on PC vs Mac. In short, the test case went like so. The four following computers were tested: Windows Desktop running Adobe Premiere Windows Laptop running Adobe Premiere Macbook Pro running Adobe Premiere Macbook Pro running FinalCut Dimitri claimed that even though his desktop outclassed the Macbook Pro, FinalCut's optimization on OSX gave it the edge over Adobe Premiere. What I'm wondering is, couldn't someone just VM OSX on their PC and use FinalCut to render their videos? I'm sure running the VM would be a little more taxing on the system, but theoretically, couldn't you take advantage of a powerful desktop and OSX's FinalCut?

Hello, I'm wondering how to run OS X on my iMac through an external SSD( If possible). *Diclaimer before the master race people start typing: The Mac was a gift I got 2 days ago. I'm aware of better ways to spending my money* That being said, it's not a bad machine whatsoever (i7, 12gb ram, 6970m 2GB) But it only has 2 thunderbolt ports and USB 2.0 ports. If there were any USB 3.0 I'd try and use those but that's not an option. Being completely new to the platform what kind of options are there to use an SSD on this thing without having to disassemble it? Are there any thunderbolt adapters or other solutions of which I'm completely unaware of? The only thing that I've found so far was a 400£ thunderbolt SSD (500gb) so if there are no sane pricings on the solution I'll just stick to the HDD. Thank you in advance to anyone that helps. ****UPDATE**** Looking into the matter a bit more I decided that it is better to replace the DVD drive which I don't use with an SSD. To do this a CADDY is needed which is fairly inexpensive (Roughly £15). Will update the post once again when the components arrive and include a guide if anyone needs it. Thanks to everyone that helped me though.

So being a massive Windows 10 user most of the time, in fact, I've been using Windows since 98 and haven't really dabbled in much else other than the odd linux distro like Ubuntu and Fedora etc. I've decided to have a play around with OS X, now, don't get me wrong, I know I've jumped into the Apple game a little late, the operating system is mature, well-organised and sits very well right out of the box, but I'm gonna go ahead and say how I feel about some of the bits I've been using the most. 1. Safari To be honest, I was skeptical, I've been a massive Google Chrome user, like most of the population that wouldn't like to be stuck using IE, unless of course you're in mainland China, in which case you'll love it because they still use Windows XP. Safari seems to be a really fast, suitable replacement for third party browsers, it's much better than IE for an OS-based browser, and to be fair, it does a lot of the same things. For a start, I find the third-party extension support really useful, as I couldn't really live without stuff like ad-block plus (Don't worry Linus I contribute on Vessel) etc, all-in-all the browser experience was very similar to that of Chrome, really enjoyable and fluid. 2. iTunes Now, in terms of a music service, they're all pretty similar now, so I'll just touch on my experience with iTunes as opposed to comparing it with the likes of Spotify and Google Play Music. The music experience is very nice, I activated the 3-Month free trial of Apple Music and I haven't yet been disappointed, the performance of the player is very smooth, no clipping and even in headphones, it was nice. Finding pre-made playlists was intuitive, the radio service was fast and contained the kind of songs I enjoy right off the back. 3. Launchpad/Spotlight Seems to be the way ninjas navigate through their OS, along with Mission Control, switching between open windows was amazing, it actually made me want to do it more, even simple things like flicking between iTunes and Safari was more satisfying than the standard switching that you can find in Windows which really doesn't add any kind of excitement to the experience whatsoever like it did in Vista/7. Accessing all apps really quickly was amazing, having the board there with all of my apps just sitting there and waiting for me was fantastic, I really love the interface. To Conclude, OS preference is subjective, before anyone asks, I did install Steam, and although the compatibility of my library did surprise me at first, it wasn't the same as being on Windows, so I'll have to play all of my games on my laptop of course, really though, these are small problems in a massive world of opportunity and possibility. The OS is fluid, stable and contributes to my productivity to the point where I actually want to do my study instead of procrastinate on Facebook all the time. Overall I really like OS X since trying it, I never thought I'd like anything but Windows but I've seen the other side and to be honest, not a single issue If you like this post, please drop a thumbs-up, agree and follow it to keep updated

Hi I'm thinking of upgrading to yosemite/el capitan, currently I'm on 10.9 (can't remeber the name of the cat). What I'm wondering about is, what is the best way to upgrade? just let Apple do their thing and upgrade (like the windows 10 upgrade)? Or back everything up to a seperate disk (I know I should do this anyway), then download the OS to a USB stick and then do a fresh install?
