I'm experimenting with servers using ubuntu on a 2nd PC. It's over 12 years old, really slow, and it has its problems... Once in a while, strange errors and issues occur and I have to reinstall Ubuntu Desktop for it to fix. Now I'm wondering if I'm better off using ubuntu in virtualbox on my main PC instead. 1) I'm wondering about the hardware wear on the main PC. People say servers destroy hardware. And also, having 2 operating systems running. My main PC is not necessarily fast / durable. 2) I'm wondering about the power usage of an older PC. 3) It's just not a nice way of working with this crappy old PC. But I'd rather destroy that than my other. It's not that good either but I don't have anything better. Main PC: Intel® Core™ i5-3350P CPU @ 3.10GHz 8GB RAM GeForce GTX 650 64-bit 2nd PC: Intel® Celeron® D CPU @ 3.20 GHz 1,5 GB RAM Gallium 0.4 on NV4A (night vision?) 32-bit (Another option is to just get hosting but I'm not ready to put up anything finished yet and I'm not sure if I want to go that route) Thanks

Hey Guys, I'm just wondering if I can reuse an OS on another computer and put it onto a new build. I'm building a PC using a Sixth Form grant but I will be buying the OS, SSD and HDD myself. This is because after the course has finished they want all IT equipment back and I will be needing to build my own PC. So If I buy my own OS, SSD and HDD I don't need to return them and I can reuse them for my own build... Can I reuse this OS for my new build if it is on my SSD or will I need to buy ANOTHER OS. If this is the case, I will use the grant to buy the OS instead of my own money. Thanks, Kris Randle

Bonjour, So, after using Windows 10 for a mere 12 hours, I came to discover that none of my games run properly on it. Either they run terribly, or just plain crash, even with my i5 4690K and GTX 970. Does anyone have any solutions? Can anyone help? Merci, AFrenchWallaby

Okay, so I just have a few questions before I upgrade to Win 10 1. How to I make sure Win 10 installs on my ssd and not my hdd 2. If I just do the upgrade will I still have all my old files and programs and what not. 3. Is it even worth it? (I've read that a lot of people are having issues) Thank you for taking the time to answer!

So basically at the moment i can't afford any replacements at the moment so so thats currently out the question. My specs are in my signature. My computer is basically getting really random BSOD's. One week they could not happen at all then the next day i can get like 4 in a day. Some of the error codes i can remember are; IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_EQUAL MEMORY_MANAGEMENT and a couple of others i cant remember. However i don't understand whats causing it. I started on a pirated copy of Windows 7. Then upgraded to Windows 10. 2 Days ago i fresh installed W10 and now running a fresh ISO boot of Windows 10. Every single OS and config has caused the BSOD;s and i dont know how to diagnose it. Memtest fails to spot anything. Startup repair, nothing. Windows Installation Repair, Nothing. Someone help. Please. It's really beginning to piss me the fuck off.

so i kept getting this weird BSOD right after power outage in my house, now my pc kept crashing after a period of use. before the power outage my pc has never ran into this weird problem. let's dive into it, i really hope someone can help me. the BSOD includes words like this: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (athuwbx.sys) i actually got screen shot of it but too lazy to transfer it, besides that is all it says and i didn't skip any details. i notice the dump file in my minidump folder but i can't upload it here for some administrator reason which i don't understand, it just says that i don't have the right to access that file which i do have the right to so yeah. really appreciate the help if you can, plus if the dump file is needed i'll use a software to read it and screen shot or copy paste it's content here.

I just recently migrated my OS drive from my 500GB 850 EVO to my 250GB 850 EVO. Now that my 500GB drive is not my OS drive anymore I tried to format the entire drive which it did not let me (I can't format the recovery partition and EFI system partition). Is there anyway to force format the entire drive?

So I tried to update to windows 10 from windows 7, but along the way something went wrong. Now all i get is a black screen with a cursor, and nothing on the web has helped me. But when I plug my spare windows 7 OEM disc, it doesn't give me an option to install windows, just to run windows 7. So now I suspect that my computer had never gotten to windows 10 in the first place. I don't have any important files so im ok with deleting all of my files and starting over, I just need something to work. So can I use the product key with the oem disc that I have (I know that they are the same version of windows)? Is there any other way to start over?

Hi I've bought myself a beast PC half year ago, then I refurbished my 5 year old PC for my grandparents (added SSD, installed fresh OS etc.) so that they don't have to use my parents former 10 (? - I'm not sure) year old PC. There is nothing to do with it right now - it's just hanging out in the basement. Grandparents like their PC and love to use it. Now they want one in their second house near the town lake. They reminded themselves that they have one and asked me to prepare it, make it faster, clean it etc. I agreed. I don't have it yet, but I think what I can do with it. I believe it's specs are: CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1800+ GPU: Nvidia GeForce 6200 MOBO: ? RAM: Elixir 1,25GB HDD: 160GB PATA PSU: Codegen 300W CASE: (random really old one - http://cdn.overclock.net/3/3f/3f26b555_vbattach175037.jpeg - looks like this) OS: Windows XP (idk)-bit It's space is all cramped and it runs very slowly + I'm not sure what I can do more. I came with four ideas: - format the whole HDD, - install new fresh OS, - install some programs like Malwarebytes and CCleaner and set it up to manually check the PC state every set period of time, - upgrade. While 3 first ideas aren' bad, but fourth is impossible (unneeded). Doing the first and third thing is simple, I'm not sure about the OS. Is installing new one actually a good idea? What OS shall I choose? I was thinking about Windows 10, because of low system requirements and running nice&cool on even old machines (but I'm not sure if on that old too...). I don't want to install Linux because I've already learned grandparents using Windows. What do you think about it overall? What OS shall I pick? Am I wrong somewhere? Do you have any other ideas to make this PC faster/better? Thanks in advance Thomas

Hi I'm really excited for Windows 10 and I was going to install it right after coming back from VACation, but then I realized I may have some problems with it. Half year ago I bought a new PC. The IT guy who built it for me (at least I have chosen parts) installed a cracked version of Windows 7 for me, but it wasn't enough. I created Windows 8 installation disc and installed it. After lots of trouble trying to crack it I used this method: Everything was perfect until I realized that I can't install Windows 8.1 from the store or Windows Update because my activation method is blah blah blah and it doesn't let me to update. I didn't cry, in fact I didn't even give a crap. Then, when Windows 10 was announced, they told us that it can be downloaded only on Windows 7 or 8.1. Technically that's true, because the GWX thing didn't install on the PC, but installed on ours (mine and parents) laptop with Windows 7 SP1, but I heard that people with Windows 8 have no problem installing it using a tool from Microsoft webpage (Media Creation Tool). I will install this OS seamlessly on laptop, but I'm not sure about the PC. That's why I have some questions: 1. Was the thing about upgrading from Windows 8 to 10 I told before true? Just to make sure I prefer to ask. 2. I'm quite sure that Windows 10 will install with no problem, but will it be activated or in a trial mode? I'm worried only about it because I'm not sure if crack will release soon, and - assuming the trial would end in this time - I would have to either buy Windows 10 key or format it and install 8 again, which I really don't want to do (I hate losing data). 3. Will I lose my data? I have got 3 drives - 128GB SSD (os, programs, documents), 1TB HDD (movies, music, pictures etc.) and 2TB HDD (games). I'm not worried about last two anyhow, but I don't want to lose the documents and programs on the first one. As I told before - I hate losing data. Plus setting this up was really time consuming. 4. Will Microsoft have problems with my cracked version? Few months ago I heard that Microsoft may disable something if I have a cracked version of Windows. It might be a stupid question (and it probably is) but I wonder if this may happen. 5. Is it a good idea to install Windows 10 now? I heard about some problems before and after installing this os. Maybe wainting few weeks is a good idea? 6. Is it actually worth it? Simplifying - is Windows 10 that good system to survive all that trouble to have it? Try to adress as many questions as possible, but mainly first 3. Huge thanks in advance, Thomas PS. Don't give me shit about cracking etc. I'm considering buing it even after cracking for the sake of buing kinda legally + I'm almost completely sure that some of you reading also have a cracked OS.

We just upgraded to windows 10 today from windows 7. We still have a windows 7 boot disc with the OEM product key. I need a windows 7 key for my new rig, so can i use the old key on the other computer now that the first one has been upgraded to windows 10? Does the upgrade to windows 10 allow the windows 7 product key to be used again on a different machine?

I have a copy of Windows 7 that I have been using for the last 2 years. It's an OEM and I still have all parts, papers, activation codes, even the receipt. Today I log in and it tells me it's not genuine. How can I have activated it, used it, updated it for the last 2 years if it was invalid? More importantly, how do I fix it? I've watched videos of how to fix it, but they have access to their desktop. I just have the "build 7601" standard warning in each monitor corner and a mouse cursor. No keyboard functionality nor do mouse clicks work. Follow up: So yea. It's working again. I'm almost afraid to turn it off.

I'm looking for a OS for my old laptop that I'm will test run as a router instead as the crap we did get with the broadband. I was recommended smoothwall but because the laptops (I will use two fore the network layout) are as old as they are they are x84 and don't support them. I will maybe build something more high end for a better layout so I would appreciate if it have a 64bit version.

ok as the title states i want to move my OS to another SSD, i dont have another SSD but the fact that programs aouto install and games like GTA-V use the C: drive without asking and even tho not even being installed on it, i want a bigger SSD, the main issue is that my OS ofcorse is on the SSD im using now wich is a 64GB one btw and i cant just take it out and slot in a new one in its place, so what do i do, what size should i get and is there something else i should do, im upgrading my PC really soon so i might be able to slip a cheaper 120GB ish one in there too but then i need to get a new OS or something and i really cant afford that

Windows 10 launched with full DX12 support. What about those of us that are on Windows 7? I have a 980 Ti, which is allegedly (in the midst of all the confusion regarding the levels of actual DX12 support) DX12.1 ready. Okay, what about W7? I cannot have access to DX12 without the OS support, right? Is M$ trying to screw us again, or is DX12 going to be supported on Windows 7?!!
