Hi I'm selling my old PC and plan on keeping the boot-drive and using it on my new PC as extra storage. Do I have to remove windows (and the old programs and drivers that might be on it as well) from the old SSD to use in my new PC (which already has windows installed) (if so how?) or is it just plug and play?

So i just migrate my os from hard drive to ssd, (dual drive) everything went fine and i manage to boot a couple times, and i check my bios a couple times to make sure they were installed on correct drive, my ssd but then when i try to formatted my HDD, everything went downhill, i can't boot to my os anymore, it keep blue screen said windows missing some file etc, i tried to using mini windows (ubcd) or to check if my ssd has any windows on it, but it actually yes, the ssd have all of the partition and files for a proper boot drive, but since i formatted my hdd it can't no longer boot onto it, it wasn't a big deal actually, i can install a new fresh windows again, but my problem is that how that thing happen in the first place, anyone care to explain pls, I'm planing to do the same with my friends laptop but i afraid if this thing happened to their

Hi All, I have already made my list, but I can't decide what operating system to get! I don't really want to get Windows 11 since It asks for so much info, so should I get Linux? Or should I make it a hackintosh? What do you guys think is the best option for these parts? (I would also like it to be a OS which supports all of the drivers for these parts.) And if it's Linux. I do not want any Arch, just something Debian based. Thanks! -Grimet List: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/dD83bK

So I'm on windows right now and I want to have MacOS running on another drive, windows is installed on my SSD and I have a 2TB HHD for games and general storage. Is it ok to boot MacOS off the 2TB drive and still have my games for windows on there too? So putting general storage on a boot drive? Also would I need to partition the drive?

There is still one thing that M.2 can’t do right now that sata drives like HDD and SSDs can. There are all these little devices you can get on amazon that will allow you to plug as many drives directly into your motherboard as you would like, but only power the ones you want to use. They are called SATA switches. can’t post link to amazon, plz dm me if you want the hardware link These are really handy, say if you have a computer you would like to use for work, play, and mining. You can more safely use one computer for many different tasks, because unlike booting into a specific drive from bios, none of the other drives can see one another, because the ones you don’t want to use are all off, even though the sata/data cable is still in your mobo, the drive has no power to talk to the mobo. In addition, switching between OSs is faster, because you don’t actually have to use the bios menu to select a drive, and you never miss the bios menu on boot. Also, no OS update will ever decide to explore your other drives, and brick any of your systems. Also, as games because 100’s of GB, and larger 8TB drives have exploded in value because of storage crypto, separating your games on one drive, and your work and finance on another drive is a great way to get more out of smaller drives, and is a great security option, even if you only like using one OS. So, looking at M.2, this is not as straightforward to do, because in that case, there is no unique plug for power and data, the simple interface saves a ton of space, but unifies both power and data into one plug (i’d assume) Still, there should be no reason that the same strategy can’t be used with these new faster m.2 drives. I think it would be very easy to make a small pci sled that can carry four drives, and allows the user to connect or disconnect power to them at will from buttons located either on the back of the case where the pci card is exposed, or at the end of a USB cable where a small interface can be located at the users preference. The cable is much more preferred OFC, because it can save your back. I am posting here because I want to ask if this is possible? From the computer’s perspective, it wouldn’t be any different, that any other m.2 sleds that already exist, it just needs some simple board work remove positive voltage from the power pins to the drives you don’t want to use, whatever ones those are. I don’t really care about this a some sort of invention. I am sure other people have had this idea before. If someone who actually does the hard work wants to give me credit, then cool. But it would be great to just see the parts actually made because I would like to buy one myself. I think it would be great! It’s a lot of hassle to wire on of the existing systems up to four SSDs or HDDs, there is a low of power cables and SATA cables flying around. This new tool could deliver the new speeds of M.2, remove all of the cable hastle, and make install a breeze, all while improving speeds from the SATA days. I think this is a great tool that could save people a lot of money, who may not need to build 2 PCs or have the money to. Or, maybe just the person who has recently found themselves working from home, doing their own side hustle, and downloading clash of clans, war thunder, and ROBLOX next to their tax info and finance info, and payroll/bank info? I also see this as a good measure against ransomware attacks, and something that can be good for the earth, meaning less silicone needs to be produced for one persons needs. It could especially help now in the current chip shortage, and everyone working from home, and starting new projects. PS: in b4, just use bios menu…

Hey guys, I was looking for a custom rom for my p30 lite without any results. I haven´t touched the bootloader yet and I read I can´t open the bootloader. Is that the truth? There are tutorials to do this, but I don´t have any clue if this is correct or not. Does anyone has any experience with it? The P30 lite is on no compability list and that made my a bit scepital. And as always: Please excuse my bad english

Hello Together, I want to build a NAS that can also virtualize a Windows Client. Since the NAS is for a public organization it should costs as less as possible. Functions I need: Diffrent File Shares for diffrent sectors Access from outside the network Ability to virtualize a Windows 10 client RAID 5 support or similiar My question is now what OS I should use. I only have experience with Synology OS at the moment. So I could install XPenology. Other Options would be Unraid or FreeNAS. What could you recommend for my requirements? Thank you guys!

Hello wonderful fellow LTT forummers! I am building a custom NAS, i will list all the parts i have. Even tho i dont think it matters much, but better safe then sorry. Specs: Asus Prime X470 Pro AMD Ryzen 1700X G.Skill Aegis DDR4 16GB (F4-3000C16D with Hynix chips) PCIe 3.0 to SATA 3.0 6Gb/s Expansion Card (cheapo chinesey stuff have not to much hope of it working correctly) Ati Radeon HD 5750 (just for HDMI out, but needs an upgrade. Suggestions welcome) 120GB Dram SSD 4x 4TB WD red (new) (Old drives, may or may not be used anymore) 500 GB Sata drive 2x 320GB Sata drive 1TB IDE drive (will not be used anymore) 160GB Sata Now on to my actual question. Its just about which OS/software is best to run. What i hope to get out of it; I want a NAS thats easy to manage and stable. But also it need a Windows 10 enviroment (VM or direct dont care). To run an OBS stream (using the file plugin to play files for 24/7). I want the 4x 4TB drives to be used with a parity disk. Maybe have the other disks added on non parity/non raid mode. (but thats a luxury not a necessity) What i have already found; As the NAS needs to be built yet (i'm lazy shoot me), i'm still open to see what the best OS is. I have seen UnRaid which looks very nice, but i'm not willing to spend that kind of money. For my NAS. (Sorry but its just not in my budget, ie i CANNOT afford). I have seen the Synology OS, which looks nice but i don't think might be robust enough for custom NAS whit some actual power. (also piracy so lets not mention it further). I have read a little bit about btrfs but im not sure seeing all the talk about bugs and stuff. I've also seen talk about SnapRaid but that feels more like an after tought backup solution then a stable base for NAS stuff. Also there's OpenMediaVault but i feel like that is lacking features. Checked out TrueNas, looks good not sure if it supports 4disks/1parity (edited) But i dont know what to choose. I want the power of the 1700X to be used well. Good part to the video streaming, and some for the NAS so its not slow. I dont need the best speeds but around the diskspeed is nice. I will however be using a lot of the storage on it. Would be nice if adding storage later on is easy. If all is well i will use it headless and only RDP (remote desktop) in when there is an error. The hardware is unlikely to change, its stuff i had lying around (besides the motherboard i bought specificly for this (cus it had 6 SATA ports + nvme)) My appreciation will be great for the one pointing me in a direction i've not seen. Or give me conclusive advice why i should use one over the other. Im kinda lost because of all the options. Any kinds of questions or things i missed in the post, please point them out. Thank you very much for all your efforts!

So I reinstalled windows and im not sure which drivers to install. The only one I have downloaded are the gpu drivers. Everything else I let windows take care of. I went on my motherboards website and am confused as to which drivers I need. My r15 scores are 1406 multicore with priority on normal and 1503 on Realtime priority. Specs: i7 9700k gtx 970 z390 aorus ultra 16gb 3200mhz 1ssd, 1hdd 1nvme m.2 ssd

I am moving my drives to anther PC. in my current PC I have two M.2 boot drives (windows and linux) and a couple data drives. Can I just move the drives over and I will be up and running? I would normally whip the drives and do a fresh install but I am student and have things installed and set up that I rather not spend time reinstalling and setting up since it works right now. Just trying to get an understand on what I expect to see when I move thing over.

Hi All I'm living in Beijing and my Note 9 has really been slowing down. It's been a really trusty workhorse for a while now and I've been putting off getting a new phone. There are some sales on at the moment and I'm trying to decide between a new Note, or a Fold 2 seeing as during these sales, the price difference makes the tablet aspect of it very appealing. The downside to getting one from China is that I do want to start with the standard Android/Samsung experience and customise from there. A lot of the Google services etc just won't be installed and apparently it can be a massive pain getting them to work due to how interconnected they are. I'm a PC guy and phones really aren't my territory, but with these sales I don't have much time to familiarise myself with how these processes work.. though I have been looking through forums. Is it possible to get the phone and install a normal version of Android/Samsung version from scratch and then customise it? From what I've seen, there's a bit of a minefield with being able to just install a fresh OS unlike with PCs. I've seen a lot of talk about Odin, ROMs, Bootloaders, LineageOS etc. Honestly the main things I need is access to PIA VPN, APKs and ideally the Play Store. I don't use a lot of voice commands currently but I am also getting into HASS so having the Google Assistant would probably be a big bonus. Many thanks in advance!

I recently got a Western Digital Black SN850 500 GB so I was wondering if it matters whether I install my OS (windows) and work files on it or use it for general storage/gaming. I also got a Samsung Evo 970 plus Evo 1TB which I wanted to use for general storage/gaming, but it's got a 256 bit hardware encryption unlike WD. I couldn't find a proper answer elsewhere so I'd really appreciate it if you can help me out.

I recently acquired an old Asus P6T Deluxe V2 motherboard. I swapped out the old HDD for an SSD with Windows 10, but it won't boot! The BIOS settings detect the SSD properly as a "hard drive", but when I exit the settings, the screen outputs "No hard drive detected", and proceeds to an infinite blank screen with a blinking cursor. Please help me! I have uploaded a video to youtube demonstrating my configurations, as well as the boot process/results here.

Hi there so i have recently build a new pc i have a 3070ti and i9 10900k and 32gb ram and i have installed windows a total of 3 times on the new pc once on the day i built it and twice in the space of 2 hours i am very OCD about damaging my hardware and losing peformance and all that stuff So here are my questions 1. HI. No idea if this is the right thread for this, but here goes. I have 2 laptops that I could select from when buying. One has the rtx 3070 and the other the rtx 3080 laptop videocard. Both cards run at 105 watts. The CPU is identical in both laptops and is stock. It is the Intel Core i7-10870H. The laptops have identical 1080p 144hz displays. Will there be any bottlenecks here on any of these two laotops? What about if I connect my 1440p 60hz monitor to any of these two laptops? Thanks.

I have been thinking of switching from Windows 10 to a Linux distro to try out for a while & at the moment, I'm not sure if Manjaro Linux would be the right choice for me. I've attempted to narrow my choices down in my research, but I don't know everything there is to know about Linux. Esp. given the fact that I have NEVER tried it out yet. [To be clear though- this will only be as a trial sort of thing & I'm pretty sure I'm bound to switch back to Windows later on at some point.] For anyone who is curious/interested, I made a post a few days ago on the Level1Techs forum about this. You can view the post here: https://forum.level1techs.com/t/im-thinking-of-switching-to-linux-from-windows/170392/23 All in all, I got back some pretty good responses in return, but I didn't think at the time of discussing specific distros for my needs. But the link does talk about what I have in mind in a nutshell. I feel like Manjaro might/could be the right choice for me, however, like I said earlier, I'm not really sure hence why I'm asking here for extra confirmation. But I would like to hear back you guy's opinions or stories about switching to Linux. Like if for example, I should consider a different distro that might be better overall for gaming/performance, etc. Or if maybe I should consider a different distro in case it offers more stability, or what have you. I know this is by far 1 of the more unusual posts I've done here, but I feel like wanting to step out of my comfort zone, give Windows a break [for a while] & just see how well my 1st experience with Linux goes. If any of you happen to have any questions for me, need more details or feel like I missed something, be sure to message me back/comment & I'll get right back with you! Thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to help!

OK, I know this is an old GPU, however, it's still not bad playing older games, even some 2018 ones. I know this is a working GPU, it was working OK before in Windows 7-64 Bit Ultimate machine. However when I installed it in my current desktop, - the BIOS screen posts just fine, the board cycles through all the colours, testing all the peripherals and finally lights up green as it should, indicating all peripherals are functioning fine, including GPU (white LED). Then I see Windows logo. The first time I put it in - I was able to boot to desktop, but just as I was un-zipping the driver for this card, - the screen went black. I assume this happened as Windows was automatically trying to install a generic Microsoft driver for it? Not sure. However, I didn't have enough time to install its latest driver I downloaded from ASUS site, as the screen went black. I re-booted by holding power button. This time the screen went black immediately after the Windows logo, it wouldn't even let me sign in. The hard drive LED kept flashing while the screen was black with very faint, grayish, flickering artefacts. I waited for maybe 5-6 minutes thinking the situation might resolve, but it didn't. My current setup is Windows 10-64 bit Professional, B450-F motherboard, 16 GB of RAM, Ryzen 3-3100 CPU, Samsung EVO 128 GB SSD, 6TB Seagate Barracuda HDD. I went online to find everything I could on the issue, however, almost all the entries had to do with people trying to install or update the card's driver, and this is what caused the black screen. In my case, I didn't even have enough time to unzip the driver installation directory. What could this be, granted this is very unlikely to be a hardware, or board compatibility issue, since BIOS boots just fine and recognises the card? Is this something to do with OS? The driver? has anyone encountered a similar issue with this card in the past, I wonder? Very grateful for advice.

I'm currently trying to fix my neighbor's laptop. Something wrong with the OS and needs reinstalling. I tried to moved the files by plugging it in my external hdd enclosure. I plugged it in to my windows laptop and it's was unreadable. Then I tried using Ubuntu and it was able to read the drive. But when I tried to move the data from the faulty drive to the Ubuntu drive. The transfer speed was so slow. It's been running about a couple of hours now and it's only managed to move a couple of folders and about a gig of data. It's this normal to be this slow or am I doing something wrong??? Please need advice.

Hey Anyone and Everyone... Whilst looking at the possibility of migrating my OS from my older HDD to a newer SDD, I began uninstalling unwanted programs (mainly old university software such as AutoCAD and other personal software) from my PC as migration was impossible (to the best of my knowledge) due to space restrictions. Everything was running smoothly and working fine. Then however I decided to restart the PC as I believe is reccommended when uninstalling programs. So I shut everything down and restarted. This was where things started going wrong... "OS not found"... Black screen of death with a simple line of text in the top left hand corner. Trying to keep my cool, I restarted and went straight into the BIOS. Pulled out the old USB I had bought to install Windows 10 when I first built the computer. Tried to reinstall it but could not figure out how. Decided to update my BIOS. Used an old laptop to download 7982vIG from the MSI website. Started updating. Everything looked alright. PC restarted a few times. Left it going... Left it going... Then it just kept going but nothing onscreen. So I let it run a bit longer. After ~15min (and reading some stuff online that said get worried if nothing happens by 10min) I started worrying. Force shutdown my PC, removed USB stick with BIOS update and tried to start. She started, but that was it. Monitors recieved no signal and eventually went to sleep to save power. I'm afraid at this point that I may have corrupted the BIOS... Still trying to keep my cool I turned of and started again. Nothing. Removed CMOS battery, pressed power button to drain residual power and force reset of BIOS. Tried to start. Started, no signal to monitors. Nothing. Tried shorting JBAT1 pins as reccommended by motherboard user manual to reset BIOS. No result. Unplugged PSU and tested using fan test and multimeter to check voltages. All working fine. Removed CMOS battery for a day to drain residual power and force BIOS reset. No result. I should note, somewhere in this process, EZ Debug LED light began flashing on to warn for DRAM. I have 8GB total RAM installed in 2/4 slots. Never had any trouble before this. Don't know why they would randomly fail now. The EZ Debug light would flash on right on powerup then turn off. Then after ~10sec, whole PC would shutdown and powerup. Then just idle I guess. All fans working. (2 on motherboard. 2 built in on GPU and one built in on PSU). Again, no signal on monitors. Also mouse and keyboard led's light up but no signal to them either apart from that. Can't for example turn on Caps Lock or turn lights off. Anyway, I'm hoping someone can help me out. I built my PC at the start of 2017 and recently upgraded GPU and added 2TB HDD earlier this year (2020). Components are as follows... Intel Core i5-7500 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor MSI B150M BAZOOKA Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4-2133 CL14 Memory Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal HDD Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" SSD Seagate Barracuda Compute 2TB3.5" 7200RPM Internal HDD (added 2020) Asus TUF GAMING GeForce GTX1660 GPU (replaced a GeForce GT 730 in 2020) Corsair CX 430W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX PSU Any advice at all regarding my next best step would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Brad
