I have a parts list for a DIY NAS ,and I still haven't decided on an OS yet. The uses have changed since my last NAS post. The NAS will be a media server using Plex, editing and storing photos, security camera recording is no longer a requirement (we got a stand alone solution for surveillance), backup scheduling, we plan on letting visitors peruse photos and do their own photo editing on the server so permission granularity is a must, and will be on 24/7. Here's the hardware I will be using which is from an old gaming PC: CPU: Intel Core I7 3930K Mobo: Rampage IV Formula PSU: Cooler Master Silent Pro Hybrid RS-850-SPHA-D3 850W Video card: Geforce GTX 560 Ti? (To help with transcoding...I hope but may be too old? Would definitely like feedback on this!) 1 SSD for metadata for making perusing media on Plex responsive. 32 GB of non ECC ram (haven't researched if Mobo can take ECC memory yet) At least 2 SSDs for cache drives in raid 1 to ensure that data is written on spinning rust without data degradation (to help since there's no ECC memory, I know it won't replace ECC memory, but to my understanding will help mitigate damage to data). Planning on a minimum of 15 TB of Iron Wolf (maybe Pro?) of spinning rust due to size of media library. I chose Iron Wolf to avoid the WD SMR debacle. I want to be able to easily add drives when needs change. I would prefer to use ZFS, since BTRFS is still in its infancy (or so a lot of people claim). I do know that some OSs have plugins that can use that non-natively. I still haven't been able to make a choice because I only see positives about specific OSs by people who love their OS, but don't discuss drawbacks. Nothing is clear and concise without bias. I would love to know the drawbacks for each OS so I know beforehand what kind of struggles I may be facing. Currently the front runners seem to be TrueNAS, UnRaid, Open Media Vault, and Rockstar.

Looking for a lightweight and usable OS for my old laptop. I had upgraded it to an SSD not long ago and upgraded it into Windows 10 from windows 8 but it does not seem to like Windows 10 much as it just bogs down on the CPU a lot even when im not doing anything. I am looking for an OS that runs fine on a 5 year old AMD laptop with 4 core 2ghz AMD cpu and with 4gb of RAM. I only plan to use Discord and for light video and media browsing. Is there some kind of OS out there that does not take much tinkering with and I can get it up and running easily?

Upon boot my Alienware 17 R4 searches for media. It usually says "no media present" and quickly disappears as it then boots into the drive. I have a feeling it is because the drive has bad sectors. SMART status puts the drive at 92% health, it has over 60,000 TB writes to the drive with an expected life of ~320TBW. I have since replaced the drive however would like to know if any others have run into the issue before so I can better diagnose it for other consumers. I found that using less than 700TB makes the drive far more stable, as to be expected if the 1TB drive has bad sectors.

Which Linux distro is the best?
itsme_dark posted a topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
For my pc having specs, i3 6th gen with 4gb of RAM. I was window user before but it was running very slowly so I decided to switch to Linux, but I was confused which distro is best for me. Please someone help me to choose the best. -
Laptop: Legion 5i (GTX 1650) The dextop window manager has a very high gpu usage (50%-90%). This problem started today and has made my laptop laggy. I'm even getting frame drops in games. In games which gave me around 80fps are now having drops to 30fps. Yes optimus is on but on turning optimus off there is no problem. Since I'm a student battery life is important for me. Does anyone have any workaround for this issue. Changing priority of dwm.exe didn't help.

I recently did a new build and got a new skhynix SSD for a fresh windows 10 install. every thing works great except for the fact that whenever I boot I get the "operating system not found, try disconnecting any drives that don't have an OS installed" well that worked which is great, except for the fact that I cannot boot with my other drives connected. All drives show in BIOS (which I updated in an attempt to fix the issue) for my mobo (Gigabyte B365M DS3H). Everything I've found online is advice for people that just cannot boot at all, however the disconnecting drives does work for me and I can boot just fine after that. Thanks in advance for any help

Hi. I'll be brief: My computer won't boot into an OS (W10 in this case) unless I have just and only one stick of RAM installed on the MOBO at any time. It doesn't matter which stick or sloth I use, they all work (or at least seem to), but if I put both stick in any sloth at the same time the PC freezes on startup (happened during install too ). One other odd thing is that the computer doesn't reconize the PS2 keyboard, from startup. The keyboard flashes, but doesn't work, and after a while is stops flashing. CPU: a10 7850k RAM: 2x2 1333Mhz DDR3 MOBO: ASUS A88XM-A HDD: 1TB WD BLUE PSU: SHARKOON SHP 500W Bronze+ (never cheap out on the PSU, lucky this one was on sale at €40! ) Case: Yes GPU: one that has never given any problem.

Hi. I'll be brief: I've made a rather weak computer with some old parts (CPU, RAM & MOBO bought used, came from a old guy's PC and bought at a used store; they seem to work as they should, read more later) to make a archive computer. The only thing I don't understand about the MOBO is that the PS2 port doesn't seem to work correctly (I wanted to install Wxp and W10 in dual boot, but be it the BIOS or the Wxp install disk the PS2 keyboard doesn't work, it flashes, nothing more, but the PS2 mouse works...) (PS2 M & K work perfectly fine, I sometimes use them with an old IBM computer with Wxp because yes) and I said it just and only to make a complete picture of the PC. So, this was the hardware, now the software: I tried two different USB sticks (8 and 32 gb) and two different computers to make the install tool, I tried an older version of the tool too, I checked that everything in W10 is up to date to make the tool work properly, I even used another HDD that I bought for my main PC. Nothing worked. The farther an install has ever got was the "installing files" after copying them. Let me explain: Most often all installs freeze before the "dot wheel" under the W10 logo can even make one revolution, then all the others may fail randomly in later times. Sometimes, when I have to chose a version, the thing says "corrupted files" or something, a message with a red bar above; sometimes I just have to re-select the option and it works. When the PC freezes it doesn't accept any input and sometimes, when the screen is black, it doesn't even let me shut down the machine by holding the power button. This was everything, I now patiently wait for any help.

I plan to clone one of my older drives (WD 1TB, lets call it "Drive E") into a larger drive (Seagate 2TB "Drive G"). Drive E does not have the OS on it since Win10 is already on an SSD ("Drive C"). Drive E contains some important programs on it, like Discord, printer software, iCue, Mountain Everest keyboard settings, etc. I plan to keep Drive D after cloning as backup. #1 - Even though there is no OS on Drive E, can I still clone Drive E into Drive G, rename G as the 'new' E, and have my PC operate as normal once cloning is complete? #2 - Just in case #1 isnt an ideal solution, can I clone E into G then swap the SATA cables that Drive E is currently connected to, so that when I reboot into the bios, the pc thinks that drive G is drive E? Or it doesnt matter as long as I tell the PC "This is now 'Drive E' so pull the programs you need from here" ?

I've never used a Linux OS but it sounds like its superior to Windows for performance and customizability. Here's my initial questions: -Can I do everything I would do on a Windows OS on a Linux OS. -Can I run any windows program on a Linux? (Wine?) -How steep of a learning curve is it? Is it coders only difficulty? Or can any semi-intelligent computer geek learn it quickly? - What are the major pro's and con's What I use my PC for? -Video and photo editing -Gaming -Web browsing -Crypto mining (sometimes) -General work

Hey there, I recently tried to add another fingerprint onto my laptop (Asus rog zephyrus g14 ga401qh, which has a goodix fingerprint scanner), however this is what shows up when I open the sign-in options (image below) I tried to follow some guides online that said to reset the data and stuff like that (website, yes it's windows 10 but couldn't really find anything else that didn't look sketchy af and this website had my Karma chrome extension popup so I thought it was somewhat well known?) The thing is, when I hadn't reset my windows hello stuff yet, when signing into windows, windows hello worked fine (on the sign in lockscreen), it was only in the settings that showed it was unavailable, when I first tried to add the fingerprint and showed up unavailable I restarted (this issue had come up before and a simple restarted resolved it) yet it worked signing in and still showed up unavailable in settings. This is also why I never noticed an issue until I tried adding another fingerprint. Me trying to fix the problem ended up making it worse as now I don't have any fingerprint at all for quick sign in. Any help would be appreciated and I will try to reply asap (nz time zone so sleeping soon), and feel free to ask for information that could be useful that I haven't provided here. As this is my school device and would prefer it fixed before the new week.

So I'm trying to clean my wife's ssd to a bigger drive since she is running out of space, so I decided to go with Macrium Reflect Free Version. I used it before on my computer to be able do the same thing only it was a m.2 I was upgrading too. So I do the same procedure as I did before but for some reason, I keep getting a start up error that Windows 10 produces and idk why I'm getting it. I'll go through the steps I take below. 1. I installed the program, and I attached my new ssd to my machine of course. The 1st is the main drive (old ssd). The 2nd is my HDD with games installed on it only, and the 3rd is the new SSD. 2. I click on clone this disk, to get a new window 3. I then drag both partitions down to the new ssd. The 1st then the 2nd. I then selected 2 and clicked float right then selected 1 and clicked on fill space, so that I gain the extra room on the ssd. 4. I then select next then finish and let the cloning process start which will take a while. Then I checked my hard drive and it's completely cloned over to the new drive. So this is the part where it gets complicated. I turned my computer, and then to check if it boots up, I selected the new drive (kingston) and it looks like it booted up just fine. So I decided to detach the old drive, and see if it'll boot up. I even went to the bios to see if it would boot up from that drive first. The weird thing is that I had "Boot up from UEFI" or Kingston, which I found strange. So I boot it up and it gives me a start up error. I'm baffled by this and would like some help trying to solve it. I included images to help as well including the system specs.

What is your favorite version of macOS? Mine is 10.14 Mojave. This version introduced dark mode and was the last to support 32-bit apps and iTunes. Next to that is Catalina, Finder being more intuitive and the new Music apps were highlights.

Hello all, I recently built a custom server and am looking for recommendations on the OS and software I should use. I am replacing my QNAP with this server and here is what I would like it to do: File Storage: cloud access (Nextcloud?), network access (both windows and mac access) Docker: I would like to run most things from here if possible Centralized user management: This one is somewhat important to me. I really like how I can create a user on my qnap and use it to login to the web, ssh, and access network file shares. ZFS storage: Having some sort of web UI would be nice for this I have looked at Truenas Scale and ubuntu server so far. I like truenas but the docker implementation is a bit confusing making it difficult to add applications. It also doesn't have an authentication server that other apps can use. I liked ubuntu server a lot, I just ran into issues again with the centralized authentication...mainly with authenticating users in samba against a freeIPA installation Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hello i have a intel 5960x with rog rampage v extreme edition that stopped working from a leaking aio. I decided to buy an amd 5600x with b550 motherboard to replace it. Because the architectures are so different in time and company make, I assume that windows needs to be reinstalled from scratch. However there is stuff on my internal drives that aren't c (d onwards) that i want to keep. Will i have to reformat these drives as well in order to use them, or can i keep them as they are and use the programs and media data already contained on them.

I recently started to repair my old PC as a fun project. After few weeks of troubleshooting, I'm finally able to start the PC. Now I'm confused about OS. The PC is not very high end one. It has following Configuration: 1. 2 GB ddr2 Ram 800Mhz 2. 350GB HDD 3. AMD sempron 2.5Ghz Processor. Please suggest me few OS for the PC. The PC is only for general purpose like blasting music on the sound system or doing some admin work.

Currently I have a single Sata SSD (1TB) in my PC with Windows 10 and everything else. Since I am slowly running out of storage I planned to upgrade soon. I want to buy an additional 1TB M.2 drive for games and everything but I also want to buy a 250GB M.2 to have only Windows and maybe a few other Applications on it to optimize performance. Now everything that is on my current drive like games and other Programs can stay there but I want to boot from the new 250GB drive. Is it possible to Boot up the new SSD and still access games of the old drive, do I have to uninstall the OS on the old drive afterwards. I mean it would probably all be easier just cleaning everything and doing a fresh install of all games but my internet is really bad and I was hoping that maybe I can keep the games since they are so big and reinstalling them would probably take me a few days.

I watched a YouTube video about this and installed Linux Mint on my SD card. The installation was successful. The bootloader is installed on the same SD card. But after rebooting, the SD card did not show up in the boot menu. Can Linux be installed on a SD card and used as it is normally installed on an HDD or SSD? If can, suggest me a way to solve this problem.

Hi, I'm a small content creator who makes exe videos on YouTube. Say that I managed to put together a system like this: I5 2500k 8gb ram 500gb hdd 120gb SSD(for os) And a GT 1030 or Quadro p400 I just wanna know which Linux OS will be more suitable for gaming as im seriously thinking about switching from windows... Please let me make my intention clear before you give me the answers: My priorities: -Average desktop experience (Gmail, YouTube, similar things etc etc) -Maximum optimization for obs and video editing software like after effects and premiere pro(since I'm runnin a potato pc) -maximum games supported with good optimisations PS: there are some games that I'm sure to intent to play in this, those are Fortnite, overwatch, valorant, Minecraft, csgo, fifa 22 (idk if it works or not), Apex legends (i heard Apex legends ain't ideal on linux) and pubg maybe(emulator) Please let me know which Linux is best for the above needs... Thanks for stickin around..
