I've been trying to build myself a HTPC for my bedroom for a couple of months now. I built a system with a Ryzen 3200G and a Gigabyte DS3H Wifi MicroAtx board, but it wouldn't post. I decided to order a second DS3H Wifi board ($89 for a B450 w/integrated WiFi seemed like a really good deal), an Athlon processor, and additional memory. Because of the way shipping was delayed, by the time I identified the first board was the issue it was too late to return it so I had to send it to Gigabyte for warranty service. In the meantime, I built the system with the second board and it worked fine. I built it in a Deepcool Matrexx 30 case (with a tempered glass side panel and only $35 on Amazon) I even threw in a bluray drive I had sitting on a shelf because I have lots of DVDs and blurays acquired when they were a thing. But then my sister bought a house and I decided to build her a PC as a housewarming present. But I decided not to wait for the 1st board to be returned and took the board out of the PC I had just built. Her PC came out really nice. I thought about buying another board but pricing and availability been crazy lately. But then I saw Micro Center had an Asrock B550m Pro4 MATX board for $114. I picked it up yesterday and today I rebuilt my PC with it. Oh and I had put the 3200G in the PC for my sister and I upgraded to a 3400G. I had left the power cables in place for cable management. The weird thing was I had to remove them because the new board, also Micro ATX, was wider and covered more of the cable management openings. But I plugged in all the cables. I had removed the screws holding the optical drive in place so I could move it forward to make it easier to fit the board in the case. But when I went to push it back into place I discovered it blocked by the 24 pin connector. Shows what I know. The DS3H is 9.6" X 8.5" but Micro ATX can be as large as 9.6" X 9.6". So I guess my choices are to forget the optical drive, buy a larger case, or replace the B550 with the B450 if and when I ever get it back. Or I suppose I can just have the drive stick out 1.1"... If mistakes are the best way to learn I will soon be an expert. Thanks for listening guys. I just felt like venting.

I haven't really seen any modern gaming rigs to be using an optical drive, mine included. Many cases just don't support them anymore, why is that? I had been thinking of just hooking up one to my motherboard and letting it sit on top of my case, any ideas/alternatives?

I'm probably not the brightest for asking this, but I'm doing it anyways. I've retired my old Dell latitude (E4310) for an I5 7577. While I was parting it out for another system I read on the optical drive "Designed by Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology". Can anyone explain this? (under the date to the right of the bar code)

Do I need an optical drive for 2018 pc?

So i am looking for a blu ray player that is thinner than the 5.25' standard external bay and it must be shorter than 6.2' length wise, , must be sata, and also it must be motorized. why? for a ps2 pc conversion of course. i want to replace the original hard drive with a blu ray one (i will settle for dvd if no thin blu ray drives exist), however most drives are 5.25 in. and that is simply too big for the ps2. anyone know of a drive like this or know where to look? (other than newegg or amazon ofc)

I have a HP Notebook which I recently converted from 2.5" HDD to SSD. Nice!!! Fast!!! 1-TB SSD was a major improvement however I just learned of the hard drive caddy adapter that replaces the rarely used optical drive with a second HDD or SSD and there lies the issue. My thought is if one SSD is good, a second SSD for non-essential folders (Music, Photos, Videos) would be better and keep notebook PC operating lightening speed. The problem, which type of 2.5" 7mm drive is actually better when used in a caddy adapter in optical drive port? I heard somewhere that an HDD is better as the optical drive is slower which I don't understand as it is fed by a SATA cable just as the main computer drive is operated with. Is there any benefit of HDD or SSD when used as second drive via optical port with a drive caddy adapter? My HP Notebook originally was built with a Seagate 2.5" 7mm 512GB HDD which I just upgraded to a WD 2.5" 7mm 1-TB SSD which made a world of difference. However by the time I synced my Home PC files and folders to the Notebook, I'm already back down to less than 500GB on the new SSD. So I want to use the hard drive caddy adapter with a second drive and move bulky folders to second drive and dedicate primary drive to Notebook for high performance yet maintain all the files and folders from my Home PC in my Notebook while on the road. I need access to the same files and folders whether I am at home or on-the-road for days at a time. I just need to know for a Notebook in mobile use, would it be better to use a HDD 1-TB as the second drive or can I use and benefit from a second SSD 1-TB (or higher) drive? What is this craziness about the optical drive port operating at slower speed? In addition to upgrading Notebook from HDD to SSD, I also upgraded RAM from 6GB to max 12GB which I feel really benefited the Notebook as it now rivals the speed of my Home PC. Now I have the Notebook I've always dreamed of.

Hi, so I've had a big problem with my PC without a real solution... I'm a person who uses SD cards and Micro SD cards alot, so I'd like to put a multi-purpose card read in the spare optical drive 3.25" bay in the front of my PC, I've found some that can go into a HDD 3.5" Bay (why would you want a card reader inside your PC?) but no luck with what I'm wanting. And help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hello! I just recently purchased a new case for my PC. It is a ThermalTake Core P3. I really like the idea of showcasing the innards and this case does a good job at that. The P3 or its bigger brother, the P5, does not have any dedicated area for an optical drive. If I do get one then I would Upgrade to a Blue Ray Drive since that is the only disk based media I have at home. These drives are not cheap, the lowest price i have found was still over $100. If I do end up getting one, I will have two options in where to put the Optical Drive in this case. The first options would be to get a slot loading slim optical drive and place it inside the enclosure of the case. I would have to cut a slot on the case in the front bellow the IO. This will be a nice clean look. I would just need to pad the hole with something to prevent any disks from getting scratched by the metal. The second option would be to get an external optical slot drive and mount it on the case where the HHD space is right under the Radiator. The look will the depend on what type of external drive I end up choosing. I would have to get brackets to securely mount it onto the case. Please let me know what the community thinks, should I save my money and not even get one? If i do get one, which option sounds the best, inside or outside?

Hello i am looking for an optical drive that can play dvds and blu rays and read cds but i cant seem to find one if someone could suggest one that would be great

My laptop optical drive isn't reading the CDs and DVDs that I put in. I remember that it use to be able to read CDs and DVDs, but now it can't. The optical drive is fully intact, and there doesn't seem to be any damage to have been inflicted onto it. The disk drive shows up in device manager, and I have tried to uninstall the device, then activate plug-and-play to revert hardware changes, but the disk drive still doesn't seem to work. The disk drive can easily open and close from both the button on the optical drive and the eject option in Windows. My laptop is a: Toshiba Satellite L840D. The optical drive(according to device manager) is a TSSTcorp CDDVDW SN-208AB. Thanks for reading, and remember that every little answer is greatly appreciated.

I'm planning a computer build I'm going to do for a friend that needs to be relatively compact to save space and not scare them away from desktop computer by trying to give them a huge desktop tower. So I'm considering a micro ATX build in a small size computer case that may not have a mount spot for an internal optical drive /DVD drive (sorry I'm not sure which most people would call it) which would mean my friend would have to use an external USB DVD or Blu-Ray drive for anything on a disc. My question is: are there any situations where trying to do something with a USB external DVD drive wouldn't work? Like the computer wouldn't allow you to do something with a disc in an external disc drive because of a situation where USB devices wouldn't be detected or would be disabled. Something like that. I just would hate for my friend to run into a situation where something important couldn't be done all because I didn't make sure the case I choose can fit an internal disc drive.

So yesterday I was trying to open the top panel, when I putting it back I accidently drop the screw in a gap near the optical drive. Today I decide to remove optical drive to search that screw, and it when I shake it, the screw is inside the optical drive! I opened up it and it is inside the coil of the DC motor! There is noway I can open that cover, so I put it back. And strangely enouph, just before I decide close the case it fall of all the way down to the PSU amd HDD compartment. So how did it get to there!? I tested optical drive with a disk and it has no problem!

Hello, all. I'm building my first PC soon and have been doing a fair bit of planning. Here's what I've got so far: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Epsilon_Coppen/saved/T3HPxr I'm still iffy on the case, because I like that case but I prefer the S340, but the S340 doesn't have a 5.25" drive bay for an Optical Drive, and I want an Optical Drive to install my OS and whatever other drivers with. But is there a way I can do all that without an Optical Drive? EDIT: I found a solution. Thanks for your help!

Hello all. I have a Problem with my Lite on SOHW-802s dvd-rw drive. The problem is that it will read CD-ROM discs but it absolutely refuses to even detect DVD-R discs. I have already tried reinstalling and updating drivers. System specs are an Intel core i5 760 cpu overclocked to 3.01GHz, a Biostar T5 XE motherboard, 8gbs of crucial ballistix sport DDR3 ram, and a Radeon HD 7750 1gb GDDR5. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hey guys, I am building my first pc and I have only had Macs before. The case that I got does not have an optical drive to install Windows 8.1 from and I can't make a bootable USB drive because I am running Mac OS X on the rest of my computers. Should I get an external optical drive? I heard it is hard to install with an external optical drive. Or I could get a regular optical drive for the pc and install it outside the case and just remove it after installation since I won't be using one again. It would be like a external optical drive but without the extra steps. Again I don't even know how hard it is to install from a external optical drive. Thanks in advance!

[sOLVED] - I think it is the broken SATA II connector on the MB causing the issue... I hope to find a replacement (Inspiron 17R - 5737). I am going to call Dell Support and ask them for any help (last 5 words sounds like a joke, i Know) _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Hi everybody, i am here because i can't solve and i can't even explain why and how a functioning optical drive could disappear from BIOS and O.S. for no reason... I said "functioning O.D." because i tried to install win 10 on my new SSD and even if i couldn't choose it as a boot device ('cause it is disappeared from BIOS, too) the system is still able to use it, automatically, to install the O.S.... Now, the problem is that i would have had to switch the Dvd Rom with the mechanic HDD and using it for Storage, while using the SSD, obviously, for the O.S.. But i can't, because it doesn't show either the HDD neither DVD drive ... Things i have done: 1- I switched the original HDD(win 8.1) with the new SSD(Crucial mx200 250gb) and installed Win 10 on it - Last ISO; 2- DownGraded and then back to the latest BIOS firmware; 3- Back with the old HDD with an old and perfect system backup. The Dvd drive works, it is on, it opens and closes when i click the button and it starts spinning when a dvd is in, even the cursor shows the typical hourglass... Any Ideas...? Please... I spent 90€ for an SSD and i can't use it because i need a lot of storage on the go and i can't use a portable hdd.... I Have a Laptop, Dell 5737 bought in 2014. Thanks a lot for helping me...

So im planning on getting the NZXT S340 for my 2nd PC Build and I realized the S340 doesnt have an optical drive cartridge, and lets be honest, what else am i gonna use the drive for besides install windows. I've seen videos of installing windows on a flash drive but i dont really want to go that way unless necessary. So can i basically just take off the side panel, plug in the optical drive and power it and plug it with SATA and just put in windows and once it's finished just unplug everything. If not, are there usb optical drives, if so link me to some of them. Hope I find help.

Lately, I've been looking at Amazon for good PC game deals. And I've been noticing that games that come in a disc are a lot cheaper. For example on Amazon, Call of Duty Black Ops 2 is $60.00 for a download copy, while the disc version is priced at $14.95! Also I saw South Park The Stick of Truth for $40.00 download, while the disc version is $18.50! I plan on building a new PC this summer, and because of these drops in prices for the disc versions of PC games, I'm starting to consider picking out a new case so I can install an optical drive. Do you think this is the right decision? I'm not sure if there is a reason for these crazy price differences, maybe in like game quality or something so please let me know, because besides the shipping cost, I don't know why people would choose the more expensive download copy over the disc copy.

I'm looking to buy a Blu-ray Drive soon for movie watching on my PC, but some of them are pretty expensive! I thought I might buy used to save a buck, but I'm not sure about safe that gamble would be. After reading various articles and figures about prospective optical drive lives, I decided to just poll this great community. Optical drives may have a certain rated time of use, but in practice how long have yours lasted? I understand that there are a lot of variables to this equation, but this is mostly just out of curiosity. Any thoughts on the topic would be welcome below. (In case you forgot what an optical drive looks like.) (This didn't really fit any subforum, so I posted it here.)
