  1. I've been trying to build myself a HTPC for my bedroom for a couple of months now. I built a system with a Ryzen 3200G and a Gigabyte DS3H Wifi MicroAtx board, but it wouldn't post. I decided to order a second DS3H Wifi board ($89 for a B450 w/integrated WiFi seemed like a really good deal), an Athlon processor, and additional memory. Because of the way shipping was delayed, by the time I identified the first board was the issue it was too late to return it so I had to send it to Gigabyte for warranty service. In the meantime, I built the system with the second board and it worked fine. I built it in a Deepcool Matrexx 30 case (with a tempered glass side panel and only $35 on Amazon) I even threw in a bluray drive I had sitting on a shelf because I have lots of DVDs and blurays acquired when they were a thing. But then my sister bought a house and I decided to build her a PC as a housewarming present. But I decided not to wait for the 1st board to be returned and took the board out of the PC I had just built. Her PC came out really nice. I thought about buying another board but pricing and availability been crazy lately. But then I saw Micro Center had an Asrock B550m Pro4 MATX board for $114. I picked it up yesterday and today I rebuilt my PC with it. Oh and I had put the 3200G in the PC for my sister and I upgraded to a 3400G. I had left the power cables in place for cable management. The weird thing was I had to remove them because the new board, also Micro ATX, was wider and covered more of the cable management openings. But I plugged in all the cables. I had removed the screws holding the optical drive in place so I could move it forward to make it easier to fit the board in the case. But when I went to push it back into place I discovered it blocked by the 24 pin connector. Shows what I know. The DS3H is 9.6" X 8.5" but Micro ATX can be as large as 9.6" X 9.6". So I guess my choices are to forget the optical drive, buy a larger case, or replace the B550 with the B450 if and when I ever get it back. Or I suppose I can just have the drive stick out 1.1"... If mistakes are the best way to learn I will soon be an expert. Thanks for listening guys. I just felt like venting.
  2. Hi everyone, Does anyone know if I could use any USB to SATA cord for both powering and data transfer for an optical drive. When I look at descriptions of USB to SATA products, it only mentions SSD/HDD. There is an example... https://www.mwave.com.au/product/simplecom-sa201-usb-30-to-sata-external-adapter-cable-converter-ac07099 They all seem to mention they support SATA I/II/III. I think optical drives just use SATA I
  3. Hello all, I am working on a tower for my uncle, it seems that there was a issue with the display being that it had none. No display from the Graphics card (GTX 750 TI). After cleaning the inside of the case so there wasn't so much dust in it I began to attempt problem solving the issue. I was able to find the manual for the motherboard online at ASUS. I promptly unplugged the power supply from the motherboard and all cards in the computer, as well as the HDD and optical drive. I removed all cards from the PCI slots, and disconnected all plugs from the case that connect to the motherboard. I then removed the motherboard from the case after making sure my ESD protector was connected properly. After which I removed the ram and cleaned the pins as per instructions. I cleaned out the rest of the case. I checked the power supply with a 24 pin power supply tester, everything had the appropriate values. At this point I connected the power supply to the motherboard and reconnected the power button from the case to the motherboard. I put one stick of ram (240 pin 2 GB DDR3) back in and connected a monitor to the motherboard directly with a VGA cable, I connected the HDD to the motherboard following this. I turned on the power supply and the motherboard came back with a green light. I pressed the power button, the fan for the heat sink turned on and the HDD made its usual sounds. Though I still had no video, so I turned the computer off. I then tried changing the Bios battery to a fresh one and turned the computer back on, still no video output. My next step was to reset the CMOS, this fixed the video issue and the screen started to display. This is where I'm stuck though. When the monitor turned on it was displaying Going back to the ASUS website I found the BIOS and downloaded it. I put the BIOS ROM onto a fresh toshiba 32gb USB drive that was formatted to FAT32 and connected it to the computer. When the computer loaded up back to the Boot Lock screen it recognized that there was a USB drive connected and attempted to read the file which was named "CG5270.ROM". The BIOS Recovery program was unable to find the file on the USB though it was named correctly. After this I burned the file to a CD and then attempted to recover in that mannor but the computer also didn't recognize that the file was on the CD. So my question is, am I doing something wrong with the file when I put it on the USB or burn it to a CD? I have tried putting in a different piece of RAM which I know works, I changed the power supply though I know it works to another that I also know works, I changed the CPU to a known working one. I'm not sure what else to do.
  4. Hello, BLUF: I am in need of an internal optical drive that is has HDR UHD capability, and would like help if you know of some drives that are suitable. Body: I am a fan of HTPCs that replace most of the entertainment center to include consoles and BR players, i have one that i made a few years back however my drive is not UHD HDR capable, i was looking to upgrade it while also building HTPCs for my brother and his friend to move into the PC gaming world from console. They have both also requested optical drives capable of UHD HDR formats and playback. However, I have only found 2 internal drives on the market that seems to have both capabilities Pioneer (BDR-212UBK), Pioneer BDR-212UBK and the Pioneer (BDR-211UBK) Pioneer BDR-211UBK. The BDR-211UBK is an outdated drive and found it on amazon, but the description is written strangely, in bold writing it says "Ultra HD Blu-ray is supported only if a display is powered by Intel Graphics and supports HDCP 2.2. If your computer includes more than one graphics processor, Ultra HD Blu-ray is supported only on the display that is connected and powered by Intel Graphics." Does this mean i can't use a graphics card like a 2070 for the display output to use the drive for BD playback???? Or does it mean that i just can't have a Intel CPU without integrated graphics like a I5-9600KF, but am able to use a graphics card as long as the CPU has integrated graphics? I don't see how that would be an issue. I know that everything needs to be capable of it down the line to the monitor or TV, even now my graphics card and Pioneer ELITE receiver are HDCP capable... (refer to attached image) in both of these drives too, the only mention of HDR is it saying that if you have a non HDR display media will be output as SDR and they do not simply advertise the HDR capability. very confusing... Please help.. I was curious if anyone had any other models, options or any luck with using these drives and could elaborate on the requirements for HDR UHD playback on PC? TLDR: I need to upgrade my BLU-RAY drive in my HTPC and build 2 HTPCs for other people with HDR UHD capable BLU-RAY optical drives. However, i am unsure about the system requirements for a drive i found that may work and found another drive that may work but it doesn't state it is HDR capable, it only mentions that HDR media will be converted to SDR media if connected to a non HDR display. i'm looking for insight, and suggestions as well as other options for drives.
  5. Hello! I just recently purchased a new case for my PC. It is a ThermalTake Core P3. I really like the idea of showcasing the innards and this case does a good job at that. The P3 or its bigger brother, the P5, does not have any dedicated area for an optical drive. If I do get one then I would Upgrade to a Blue Ray Drive since that is the only disk based media I have at home. These drives are not cheap, the lowest price i have found was still over $100. If I do end up getting one, I will have two options in where to put the Optical Drive in this case. The first options would be to get a slot loading slim optical drive and place it inside the enclosure of the case. I would have to cut a slot on the case in the front bellow the IO. This will be a nice clean look. I would just need to pad the hole with something to prevent any disks from getting scratched by the metal. The second option would be to get an external optical slot drive and mount it on the case where the HHD space is right under the Radiator. The look will the depend on what type of external drive I end up choosing. I would have to get brackets to securely mount it onto the case. Please let me know what the community thinks, should I save my money and not even get one? If i do get one, which option sounds the best, inside or outside?
  6. So i am looking for a blu ray player that is thinner than the 5.25' standard external bay and it must be shorter than 6.2' length wise, , must be sata, and also it must be motorized. why? for a ps2 pc conversion of course. i want to replace the original hard drive with a blu ray one (i will settle for dvd if no thin blu ray drives exist), however most drives are 5.25 in. and that is simply too big for the ps2. anyone know of a drive like this or know where to look? (other than newegg or amazon ofc)
  7. I am planning to build a gaming PC at a moderate budget, but when picking out parts, I started to wonder if an optical drive is even necessary. I plan on using a USB stick to install Windows. Thanks!
  8. Hello i am looking for an optical drive that can play dvds and blu rays and read cds but i cant seem to find one if someone could suggest one that would be great
  9. My laptop optical drive isn't reading the CDs and DVDs that I put in. I remember that it use to be able to read CDs and DVDs, but now it can't. The optical drive is fully intact, and there doesn't seem to be any damage to have been inflicted onto it. The disk drive shows up in device manager, and I have tried to uninstall the device, then activate plug-and-play to revert hardware changes, but the disk drive still doesn't seem to work. The disk drive can easily open and close from both the button on the optical drive and the eject option in Windows. My laptop is a: Toshiba Satellite L840D. The optical drive(according to device manager) is a TSSTcorp CDDVDW SN-208AB. Thanks for reading, and remember that every little answer is greatly appreciated.
  10. Hello there, I was wondering if there is a place for an optical drive in the NZXT S340.. 11. 1. OC’s CPU to 4.3 GHz 1.3 Volts. Tested with Prime 95 temps did not exceed 80 degrees. Tested with intelburntest temps reached but did not exceed 90. Dropped to 4.1GHz just to be safe. 2. Played Guild Wars 2, listened to music from google play on chrome, for 2 hours. Real temp never reported temps higher than 65 degrees. Stopped playing and computer froze. Had to power down with case’s power button. 3. On reboot- It got to the windows loading screen, froze, BSOD and rebooted faster than I could read if there was an error message. Then it said “Preparing automatic repair,” froze, BSOD and rebooted. 4. went into BIOS and reset to factory. Rebooted and got same as #3 5. went back into BIOS and 10 sec in Bios froze. I turned everything off and unplugged machine. 6. Cleared CMOS- was able to boot into BIOS and mess with settings- left everything at stock, CPU Stock speeds, no freezes in bios. Attempted to start up, and got to the windows loading screen, froze, BSOD and rebooted. Then it said “Preparing automatic repair,” froze, BSOD and rebooted. 7. Tried to use windows live disc to boot from disc, got boot from CD/DVD prompt, then from CD windows loading screen, disc began to spin up and stopped, screen froze, BSOD, and rebooted. 8. Disconnected everything. Posted with CPU, MB and tested each stick of RAM alternating Sticks and Slots till all combos tested. Then just left one stick in, with SSD, HDD, and optical drive (individually and in combinations). Once drives reinstalled, same problem. Freeze at windows screen, BSOD and reboot. Did not reinstalled GPU. 9. Rebooted into BIOS, sat there idle while searching for answers on phone when machine shut off CPU Temps were idling at 30 degrees. The computer was unresponsive to pressing power button. Unplugged, waited 5 minutes and plugged back in. I was able to boot back into BIOS. Os still froze etc. 10. Tried Ubuntu live cd. Disc drive spun up, was able to access menu. Clicked Try Ubuntu without Changing PC” option. Went to loading please wait screen, Disc spun up, then stopped spinning and screen hung at loading please wait. 11. I turned everything off. Unplugged machine. So here is where I think I stand (please correct me if my assumptions are incorrect) 1. The CPU, motherboard, RAM, and CPU cooler are most likely fine- I wouldn’t be able to get into BIOS otherwise and temps would not be under control. Also I wouldn’t get any info from the optical drive to the monitor if the MB was fried, right? 2. I’m leaning toward my PSU dying. I think this due to the random shut down while idling in bios, and the optical drive quitting at full spin up. If my PSU was under powering my SSD and HDD, it could cause the OS from loading, correct? I also know that it’s possible, if the PSU crapped the bed, that the other peripherals could be fried, I hoping not though. 3. I need advice on what to do next. I don’t have spare parts to replace out. Do you think getting a power supply tester would be a good next step- or should i just get a new PSU? Does it seem like I’m on the right track, or am I way off? System specs OS: Windows 8.1 64bit CPU: Intel i5-3570K (Stock up until friday then 4.3GHz at 1.3 v then back to stock when system started acting up) Cooler: Corsiar H80i MB: Asus P8Z77-V LK RAM: 16gb (4x4GB) Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz 9-9-9-24 GPU: GTX 970 Gigabyte Windforce G1 (no OC) HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB SSD: OCZ 128GB Vertex 4 series Optical Drive: Lite-ON ihbs11204 Blueray/dvd/cd burner/player PSU: OCZ ModXtream Pro 700watt EVGA SUpernova G2 850 Update 6/8/2015 I made a Lubuntu live USB, with persistence and was able to access the SSD and HDD from a different computer (an 11 year old Dell that's been collecting dust) by removing the HDD in the dell and running linux off the USB drive and connecting the drives from my main computer. The USB also has memtest on it, so I ran memtest on my ram while sitting in the busted gaming PC. Memtest ran fine, no errors in the memory. (I couldn't do this in the old machine because it used DDR2 memory) I also removed the H80i and replaced it with the stock intel heat sink to make life easier, and re-seated the CPU during the process to cover my bases. I even disconnected the front IO and was using a screwdriver to turn on the computer. I got a new power supply, an EVGA Supernova G2 850W. With the new PSU in the system, the problem persists. So set up the new PSU. Only connected the 24pin MB, 8 pin CPU, one stick of ram. booted up and got the beep from MB speaker that it posted (one short beep). Turned it off. Took out RAM. Powered on, and got the MB alarm for no RAM. Turned it off. Reinstalled the RAM, then Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor . Post, then was able to get into BIOS. no freezing. Rebooted, this time into the live usb. I was able to actually get into the OS for the first time. About a minute into messing around (opening folders) the whole thing froze on me. I shut it down. Then, to be thorough, I reconnected the SSD with windows on it and it still froze at he windows splash screen. I tried one last thing before giving up. I took the old HDD (Windows XP) out of the dell and installed it in the new machine. I got a BSOD after passing the bios screen with an actual error code this time. STOP: 0x0000007B (0xBACC3524, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) now this looks like a boot drive error, but i know the HDD works. I had been screwing around with the dell without a problem all week. So, at this point, I think I'm looking at a borked MB or CPU. What confuses me, is that I'm able to run memtest and get proper alarm codes from the MB but it just refuses to boot into any OS for more than a couple of seconds.
  12. I have a LG 24X Dual Burner or something and I'm swapping it to an ASUS same spec one. This is because I'm selling a low end PC to a friend and I might as well use newer parts and the ASUS branding (which is great to match my mobo, graphics card, and monitor) Is there anything I have to worry about? Also, how can i remove the old drivers?
  13. This is the drive Linus used in his own build. "This is the last optical drive I'll ever need." I don't have a blu ray player. This would suffice. (@12:40)Can someone please help me find this? I don't really know what it's called.
  14. So, I've just brought a few games on the steam summer sale and it got me thinking about a few things. 1. Do steam games support mods, (I brought Fallout 3 and Fallout: NV) If so, would it be more advisable to buy the physical game? 2. Do physical, non-steam games show up in one's steam library? 3. Is the DRM on steam particularly annoying/intrusive (enough to buy a physical game)
  15. I'm probably not the brightest for asking this, but I'm doing it anyways. I've retired my old Dell latitude (E4310) for an I5 7577. While I was parting it out for another system I read on the optical drive "Designed by Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology". Can anyone explain this? (under the date to the right of the bar code)
  16. I have a HP Notebook which I recently converted from 2.5" HDD to SSD. Nice!!! Fast!!! 1-TB SSD was a major improvement however I just learned of the hard drive caddy adapter that replaces the rarely used optical drive with a second HDD or SSD and there lies the issue. My thought is if one SSD is good, a second SSD for non-essential folders (Music, Photos, Videos) would be better and keep notebook PC operating lightening speed. The problem, which type of 2.5" 7mm drive is actually better when used in a caddy adapter in optical drive port? I heard somewhere that an HDD is better as the optical drive is slower which I don't understand as it is fed by a SATA cable just as the main computer drive is operated with. Is there any benefit of HDD or SSD when used as second drive via optical port with a drive caddy adapter? My HP Notebook originally was built with a Seagate 2.5" 7mm 512GB HDD which I just upgraded to a WD 2.5" 7mm 1-TB SSD which made a world of difference. However by the time I synced my Home PC files and folders to the Notebook, I'm already back down to less than 500GB on the new SSD. So I want to use the hard drive caddy adapter with a second drive and move bulky folders to second drive and dedicate primary drive to Notebook for high performance yet maintain all the files and folders from my Home PC in my Notebook while on the road. I need access to the same files and folders whether I am at home or on-the-road for days at a time. I just need to know for a Notebook in mobile use, would it be better to use a HDD 1-TB as the second drive or can I use and benefit from a second SSD 1-TB (or higher) drive? What is this craziness about the optical drive port operating at slower speed? In addition to upgrading Notebook from HDD to SSD, I also upgraded RAM from 6GB to max 12GB which I feel really benefited the Notebook as it now rivals the speed of my Home PC. Now I have the Notebook I've always dreamed of.
  17. I have a Lenovo Idealpad 110 (https://www3.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-100-series/Lenovo-IdeaPad-110-17IKB/p/88IP1000780) with only the HHD drive of 500Gb, and I want and SSD but the laptop don't have a m.2 slot and I don't want to lose the 500Gb of storatge that I already have. Thas why I thought to buy one adapter (like these: Link on Amazon) to use an SSD 2.5'' instead of the optical drive. I don't quite know if it's compatible with my laptop or if is somewhere a good idea. Would be a good way to have both drives? Wich model should I buy? Thanks for the help.
  18. Hey, I am going to buy an optical blu-ray drive from someone. I don't have an optical drive port in my pc case (MasterBox Lite 5 RGB) and wanted to use the blu-ray drive externally to rip my personal blu-rays. The power and data connection seem to be a standard 15pin sata connection (see picture). Would I be able to use an adapter (see picture) like this to use the drive externally? Please let me know what I would need to use this optical drive externally (via USB). Thanks!
  19. Hi, I have an optical drive (i know its obsolete but its handy the 2 times I need it..) that I have two questions? problems? issues? with. the first is that it is mounted with a tool-less design and if I don't have a finger or something else pressing on the optical drive it vibrates moar than the fans on the mac pro g5 scream. the second question, I want to burn a DVD and give to a friend with a game on it but it only takes up half-ish of the DVD so if I could fill the rest up with mods for the game or something like that (this is hard to xplain ) is there a way to do that? any help and tips would be appreciated btw why is there not an (almost said subreddit but that is not what it is called on ltt.com btw you (yes you Mr Sebastian) should add ltt.com to redirect to linustechtips.com) for optical drives?
  20. I will build a pc but the case is not compatible with any optical drive ( i checked pcpartpicker as well ) the case is Phanteks - ECLIPSE P400 TEMPERED GLASS ATX Mid Tower Case and as you can see it has no place to put an opticaldrive. So i was wondering , what other way i can download windows 10 with . And also , can i use external optical drive? If yes , will this Asus DRW-24D5MT work? pcpartpicker says it needs ; '' 1 additional external 5.25" drive bay is needed. '' what is that ?
  21. Long story short, my OD is about to become homeless, is there an enclosure or case kit that this 5.25" hunk of dated technology can rest in? ~~~Brownie points if i can use it as an external one via like some "22 pin to USB" I remember having one like this in the past but I've spent at least an hour scouring google, ebay, newegg, and amazon for products related most i could get were items for "Slim" as in "re-purposing an laptop OD so you can shove an SSD or larger HDD on there or something" please and thank you :3
  22. recently i have been having issues with my optical drive, an asus BW-12b1st a. ive had no issues with it in the past, until recently when i reinstalled windows 10. windows will boot, and then ither after a few minutes of non-use, or if i do use it 1 or 2 times, windows will no longer see it. i will openly admit, the drive has been in the system since it was built a few years back, but i just used it to re-install windows 10 from a disc, then used it again to make a fresh from disc OS image, and then witched a few movies with it, all with out issue. could it have just suddenly gone bad? i am testing a spare drive in my system rite now, and it seems to be working without a hitch. i do plan i test with with another system once i get the chance, so ill see what results that turns up. now all that said, if i do end up with more problems with this drive, what would be a recommended replacement blu-ray drive? thanks in advance.
  23. Hey guys, I was looking to buy a new laptop recently, but none of them fit all my needs and wants. I was looking for a UHD screen, HDMI 2.0, Thunderbolt 3, Displayport(more on this*), M.2, SD card reader, and optical drive... but there doesn't exist such a laptop. I was going to spend up to $3K, but it pains me to spend that much money on a laptop that doesn't give me everything I want. I've looked at these so far: The GT73VR, like the rest of the MSI stuff, only has HDMI 1.4 and DP 1.2, no optical drive, and I hate the flamboyant red accents. The Alienware 17 R4 at least has HDMI 2.0, but only DP 1.2, and no optical drive, no SD card reader!!!, only 2 RAM slots, and only 2xUSB 3 ports, and seems to have QC and thermal problems and light bleed that may or may not be resolved yet. The Clevo/Sager NP9873 has awesome I/O, HDMI 2.0, 2xDP 1.3, 2xThunderbolt 3, 4xUSB 3.0, but no optical, and the laptop body alone weighs more than 12 pounds, include the brick and it's over 14 pounds. I came so close to buying the Sager, but since it'll actually be on my lap when I'm in bed, the 12 pounds gave me cold feet; and a lesser problem is that battery life is awful, but I fully expected that for what it is. OK, so it looks like the manufacturers are getting rid of optical drives, I really really hate that, but I can still deal with it. But getting rid of SD card readers is so stupid. That automatically rules the Alienware out, with only 2xUSB 3.0 ports, one of them will have to be a SD reader, and the other has to be shared between optical drives and wireless mouse/keyboard, and whatever else; otherwise I have to buy and carry around an addition USB C/3 adapter, or buy a new bluetooth mouse/keyboard; b/c of all this inconvenience, IMO the Alienware is overpriced. So the MSI seemed like a nicer(cheaper) all-around, except that HDMI 1.4 is a non-starter for me. Why does MSI put only HDMI 1.4 even on their flagship GT83? That's like getting a Ferrari with a plastic trim and polyester upholstery. Is MSI on the verge of any new releases with updated I/O? So now I'm thinking of just waiting until something comes out with DP 1.4, and wishfully an optical drive(however unlikely). Are there any laptops out right now with DP 1.4? Or do you know of any new models coming out? I'd hate to shell out $3K and find a new model a month later with DP1.4. I/O is so important to me. As for the guts, the CPU and GPU, their offerings are all sufficient for me, so no complaints there; just the I/O sets them apart. Am I crazy b/c I want an optical drive, am I alone in this regard? Thank you for sharing your thoughts on any of this.
  24. hey guys, quick question, i want to buy a new case, but it doesnt support an interal optical drive.. what i have to buy in order to use my internal drive on the outside? like usb to sata? but what about the power cable? does the usb to sata bottleneck the drive read speed? thanks!
  25. So i'm going to build a pc soon, i was wondering what brand of optical drive should i get, and please kindly consider using pc part picker to choose and post it so i can check it. http://pcpartpicker.com
