So, maybe you guys can help me out here. The Dell XPS 8900 SE is listed as one of the cheapest entry level pre-built machines that meets the oculus' minimum specs. Link: http://www.dell.com/us/p/xps-8900-desktop/pd?oc=ddcwgsk133hw10&model_id=xps-8900-desktop However, I did some research and I could not find a difference between the Dell XPS 8900 SE and the base 8900 (same motherboard, case, power supply, I/O ports, etc). So I had Dell match this price here: http://www.microcenter.com/product/455466/XPS_8900_Desktop_Computer And bought a GTX 970 and threw it in there. So 2 questions, first can anyone confirm I am right and there is no physical difference between the SE and the base model 8900's? Secondly, how can they get away with this crap?? And don't the Oculus people know this too? I mean it seems pretty obvious to me... NOTE: I only bought the unit from Dell because driving to the Microcenter was not an option for me. If I could have, I would have.

Source: http://www.techworm.net/2016/04/oculus-rift-vr-headset-software-sending-data-back-facebook-servers.html Users of the Oculus Rift have detected a background program in the Oculus Rift software which sends information to Facebook's servers. In the Oculus Rift's privacy policy, it states that information collected by the Oculus Rift, which may include the users physical movements while wearing the Oculus Rift and the users IP address, may be used by third parties. (Also for those who don't already know, Facebook owns Oculus Rift.)

I would like to own a VR headset that can play 3D movies and I wonder if Oculus Rift can be used as a personal home theater. That is to say, if Oculus Rift can display both left-right and up-down formatted movies content. I use MPC-HC to play both video and audio stream. I also wonder if playing 3D enabled movies requires any special software.

After reading an article this morning that discusses how companies like Asus, Alienware, and Dell are now pumping out "VR ready" pc's, I thought I would bring up a discussion about all this VR hype. Is the new "VR ready" identifier associated with actual hardware changes, or would I be right to assume that they are just throwing this label on pre-existing products that have always been ready? Is anyone actually excited for VR? Does anyone plan on buying a headset? Is anybody listening to me? http://www.techtimes.com/articles/132133/20160210/oculus-vr-announces-rift-ready-pc-bundles-preorder-starts-on-feb-16.htm http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2016-02/10/oculus-pc-computer-cost

In an interview it was stated that more technology has been added to the Rift than was previously in the development kit version. Instead of making it more affordable, Palmer wants to release a quality product that will be able to last for a while without upgrades. The price to entry into VR isn't just the equivalent of a brand new PS4. Pc specs have been released: Some computer manufactures will be releasing Pre-Built PCs that are "Oculus ready" for around $1000. So now that we know this piece of tech will be carrying a heft price tag, are you planing to be an early adopter and buy it or wait for other manufacturers to release cheaper products? Htc Vive vs Oculus Rift What are you guys leaning towards, are you going to buy one? Personally I'm thinking of getting the Htc Vive but I don't know, they haven't released the price or what the games and steam aspect will be like so it's kinda hard for me I think we will get a lot more information about both products vary soon. Also I just played firewatch great game totally worth the 20$ played it all in one sitting 9 out of 10, it would make a great vr port. Gets my recommendation.

I have a lot of cash lying around... I am thinking about ordering the Oculus Rift. I am in no rush, so I may wait for the Vive. I really have no clue on which on to go for. Currently leaning towards Oculus Rift. Guidance is appreciated. Thanks - Covert.

Well it's out... and WOA! One hell of a price tag! The Oculus Rift (CV1) is going for £529 (inc shipping in the UK) and $599 in the US. Hell of a lot more than I expected... Very disappointed, I expected the HTC Vive to be this price. I bet you Oculus will charge another £300+ for the VR handsets later in 2016... 4 Billion from facebook wasn't enough to cover all that R&D using samsung mobile screens and moving IR LEDs around with a bit of glue on a few 3D printed cases eh... Personally I'm going to wait to see what HTC will offer, it's rumored to be a superior device, not to mention we can buy our own xbox controllers for £12. NOTE: To use the VR handsets on the rift you will need another sensor to track them! (CPU load!) The HTC Vive doesn't. Summary 1 x PC good enough for a good VR experience £1,000+ 1 x Oculus rift £520 Some decent games + £??? or should I buy a car? I can see this happening... Kid to parents: "Mom, I want an oculus rift for my birthday or xmas" Parents to kid: "Or you could have an XBox one AND a PlayStation 4? Same price and more games..."

Hey everyone, So I bought a DK2 off a mate yesterday and got it working in Dirt Rally so far, but non of the rollercoaster things seems to work, now i've downloaded the SDK 0.8 (Latest) and am getting sent his details of VorpX as that was part of the deal, but from guys who using it what general advice would you have, also its weird how the demo where you sitting at the desk is fine but when you walking around the tuscan house I get mad motion sickness. Also didn't get it with Dirt, How does one deal with this ? Thanks guys, very excited to play around more with it.

What do you think how gaming will be in the next 10 years ! Will VR be a thing ? Will Gaming cockpits like the obutto revolution make sense anymore even for racing and flight simulation? Would technology allow something like what happened in the TRON series? (Going in the computer to experience the game first hand) Would a setup like that cost a fortune? Would we reach to point where GPU's become so effective that you wouldn't need to spend a lot to play at the highest settings at the highest resolution to experience a good framerate? Could newer technology reduce cost for the High end user ? Post your thoughts ! Will add more polls to it !

I haven't been following the Oculus Rift and it's development so this may be old hat for some, but I was browsing through The Chilean Army magazine when I came across an article about its training and simulation centre and the software they develop to train their troops. What surprised me was a picture of a dude developing some software with the Oculus Rift. Forgive my ignorance, but as far as I know the thing isn't even out yet! How did they manage to get one to start developing training software for it? Source (Spanish): http://issuu.com/ejercitodechile/docs/a_s_agosto_2015

Hello, my computer is soon to be 4 years old. Therefore, I think it's time to upgrade. With skylake coming soon, I'm thinking of buying a computer in the fall, but will Nvidia relase new versions of 970 cards or similar that is capable for VR? (1070 lol) Should I wait until spring next year? My budget is around $1100 and I'm going to use it for VR when the Oculus is released. Therefore I think a GPU is the most important part, and the current 970 is not powerful enough. Thanks for all responses! If anything is unclear, just comment and I'll make sure to elaborate.

Oculus just held a "Live Event" where they showed a whole lot of stuff, everything from the consumer Rift to "Oculus Home" Design The design is very sleek compared to the dev kits and looks a lot like the leaked one just without the green. I think that it looks very good and with the other stuff they showed off, it's going to be one of the best looking VR headsets. The lenses can now be moved to be wider or more narrow, and it's now more The outer shell is covered in fabric and the new head mounting is much better that the old one that used elastic bands, according to Oculus. They also said that it's very light and balanced, but didn't say say any specifics. The new tracking cam looks much better than the old "web cam" one, and follows the simple look and feel that the Rift has. Not sure if it's better or worse than the old one when it comes to tracking the LEDs under the headset, but I guess I'll preform about the same or better, depends on the price point. It now has what they're calling "VR Audio" built in (just like the we saw in the crescent bay prototype) which is fantastic if you don't really have a great headset but still want a immersive experience. But if you're like me you already have a good headset to use, and thankfully the Rift will let you remove them if you want to. Oculus + Microsoft Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox took the stage to tell about a partnership between Oculus and Microsoft. So Windows 10 will natively support the Rift which is pretty awesome. Something that's a bit more questionable is the ability to stream from your Xbox games to your Rift, allowing you to play titles like Forza and Halo in VR. Not really sure if the Xbox has enough horses to power that, and with streaming comes latency, and with latency comes motion sickness. Inputs They announced that the Rift will include what they mean is the best game controller, the Xbox One Controller with a wireless adapter. It's a weird thing to include, but it makes sense. So I appreciate the thought that when you include a controller, it's a damn good one. They also showed of the "Half Moon" prototype of their own input device, Oculus Touch. Oculus Touch is a pair of wireless, lightweight and ergonomic hand tracking controllers that "gives hand presence, manipulation, communicative gestures and low mental load". It has support for traditional inputs like a gamepad (whatever that means) and track movement the same way as the Rift, by using LEDs that are read by the included camera. On the controller itself there is one trigger, one joystick and two buttons. It will be sold separately. You will be able to try it in their E3 tooth next week in a demo they're calling ToyBox. Games They did show off a lot of games, and here's all of them: EVE: Valkyrie CCP Games showed of a new trailer for EVE: Valkyrie, but there wasn't anything that we didn't know that was talked about. Chronos Gunfire Games showed of a game called Chronos, a medieval RPG about dragons and mazes. Edge of Nowhere Insomniac Games showed of a game made exclusively for the Rift. Edge of Nowhere is a adventure game with a creepy atmosphere to it. I'm personally really exited for this. They also mentioned: Damaged Core, VR Sports challange, Esper, AirMech VR and Lucky's Tale. They didn't really talk about them a whole lot. All the games will be playable at the Oculus E3 booth. They also said that they'll be donating $10,000,000 towards indie development, which is awesome. Rock on, Oculus! Software They announced Oculus Home, a hub for all your VR games and friends. You can buy games there, launch games, see what your friends are playing and join them. There will be a VR version of it and a 2D version for when you're not using a Rift. That's all that we really know about it at the moment. They will also be updating Oculus Share, their platform for developers to share their games and creations with others. There is also now an app on Android and iOS for booking your demo at E3 for you lucky people that are going there. Specs They didn't say much about the specs at all, but this is what they said: - Custom OLED displays with low persistence - New tracking system After being acquired by Facebook, they've been able to create their own custom displays instead of using what's already out there like the DK2 that used the screen of a Galaxy Note 3. So what kind of display does it have? We'll have to wait and see. The was no price announced but it looks like they'll be announcing a lot a E3 next week, and the Rift is scheduled for a released date sometime in Q1 2016

A while back I got to building my first gaming pc, so far been extremely satisfied by it, but now here's the thing: I've been extremely interested in jumping on the VR bandwagon and might save up to buy myself an Oculus Rift when it comes out, depending on the price etc. Thing is though, I'm not sure at all if my pc can handle it. Can anyone maybe provide some insight on being able to manage or pointing out if this or that needs an upgrade? So far I'm using the following components: CPU: AMD FX-8350 Cooler: Scythe Shuriken Rev. B RAM: Kingson HyperX FURY 8GB DIMM DDR3-1600 Mobo: ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3 GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Storage: Western Digital Blue WD10EZEX 1TB PSU: Cooler Master G650M Thanks in advance!

*disclaimer* life might not actually become better. WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA My mate has a DK2, I went to use it, and.. WOAH WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH VR is already revolutionary, it's not perfect, the DK2 has some noticeable frame rate glitches, and needs higher res panels - but the experience was genuinely touching. It really was. It's artistically revolutionary, really. Flying about the place in Elite Dangerous, OLEDs perfect darkness in the sky, and the infinite depth of VR - it was touching, immersive, almost a dream. Swimming around in a tropic ocean seeing the fishies, and looking down, genuinely down, at cavernous depths. WOAHHHH The potential for immersive VR like this is absolutely insane. Do yourself a favor, experience it for yourself. Woah.

As if my decisions weren't difficult enough, I've found another problem, Do I go with Triple Monitor surround, or Oculus Rift, for Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen? I know a LOT of you are probably going to scream "OCULUS!!!!!!" at me, but I'd like to take every pro and con into account before spending this kind of money. Which will function better with dual gtx 970's in SLI? What are the drawbacks to the Oculus? etc. I know the choice may seem obvious, but considering that the Oculus is visual only, it seems like it could be a "waste". To explain what I mean: If while playing the Elite Dangerous with the Oculus Rift, I could look sideways and actually move my hand to flick buttons and control my ship, the choice would be completely obvious. But as far as I know (and I could be wrong, if I am then this entire thread is pointless because the choice is so completely obvious it's painful) So.....what would you do? (I would greatly appreciate @Slick and @Linus 's opinions as well, should they deem it important enough to respond)

If you look at the comments on http://www.vrcircle.com/post/2560-x-1440-very-likely-the-oculus-rift-consumer-cv1-resolution, there seems to be some confusion as to if the commercial version will be rendering two 1440p images or 2 720p images. Can anyone clear up how 3d works with the rift, or any devices that use this technology, for me please? I'm completely lost here and I just wanna hear from someome who knows what they're talking about to explain the whole technology to me. Thank you!

Oculus delays rift consumer version till 2017 Source: http://www.kdramastars.com/articles/42252/20141004/oculus-rift-consumer-version-release-date.htm Not quite sure how reliable this source is but it seems like the Rift might not be coming out until 2017. This huge gap in the release may point out to a DK3 though highly controversial or they maybe waiting for a better display from Samsung, 4k maybe?, and for single gpus that can run games at 75fps+ at higher resolutions. Any opinions?

Oculus rift prank ideas? Ok. So here's the reason for this post. Me and a friend of mine are gettin pretty exited for the oculus rift. And as i was sitting next to him i noticed that he was wearing closed headphones ;) It was at that moment i realized that there is an epic opportunity for some elaborate pranks to be prepaired. This is basically what your would be prank victim might look like. Note the lack of vision and impaired hearing. There are of course the simple but effective pranks like for instance: Putting a picture of something scary right in front of their immediate field of vision when they take the device off. Putting a fake spider on the wall next to them. I would just like to take this opportunity to see what you guys might come up with And hopefully have a proper arsenal of things to do when the oculus is finally released on the consumer market. If there is a post like this that has been created previously. feel free to lock this thread
