Hello, I am new to PC building/upgrading. I've watched a ton of videos on how to build PCs, install new parts in PCs, etc. I recently got into PC gaming, but realized that my prebuilt "Office" PC was not up to the task. So, since I do not have the money to build a new system, I made the decision to upgrade. Of course, I started thinking of compatibility issues and stuff, but I figured out that I can install a 750 ti, a new power supply, and a new hard drive for extra space. But my RAM is only 4gbs so I figured if I really want to get into PC gaming I am going to need 8gbs (or more). Apparently, my CPU (Intel Pentium G640 2 Cores 2 Threads 2.80 GHz) only supports DDR3 1066 Memory? I have no idea what this means, which is why I am writing this story on here. It says it on Intel's website, link: http://ark.intel.com/products/53486/Intel-Pentium-Processor-G640-3M-Cache-2_80-GHz. Does this mean I can only install DDR3 1066 RAM? I don't want to blow $40 on RAM and find out I can't use it. Please enlighten me on this topic.

Hi! The household is making the switch from ADSL2 to Fiber Optic internet in a week and we're planning to put the modem in the living room. My PC is in my room and it's 10m away from my living room. What kind of ethernet cable (CAT5? CAT5e?) should I get? I'll only need less than 30m to route the cable from the modem to my desktop I know this must be a very noob question to a lot of people on Fiber. I just want to get the cable before the change happens. So I can use my PC at the moment we make the switch to Fiber! ps I googled about this and I just got terribly confused..

I'm working on a degree in computer science and I want to build my own server, or I think I want to anyways. I bought a domain to play around with a while ago and it seems like I really need a server of some sort to actually do anything with it. So if I were to look into buying a server and building one, what do I need? I want to be able to host things like IRC, teamspeak, and game servers. Nothing serious with the games stuff. Just small games like terraria. Also to work on and host my own website. I'm really just trying to mess around with all this stuff in my spare time. I was thinking I could just buy some older server parts from ebay and set something up, is that actually an option or is it much more complicated than that? If so, why? What all do I need?

I had too reinstall windows since i first installed pro but after i while i discovered that to me it was definetly not worth twice the prize, but now that have deleted everyting on the computer and made a usb stick boot device. i put it and nbothing happens i try many times without luck. and i try to go in to bios multiple times until it finally worked then tried to change first boot device to usb stick. it worked but after the installation of it was done and the blue windows logo and loading screen came it stopped and went to the start i tried multiple times to install it again and again and nothing else happend. I try to make a usb 2.0 stick to boot device and tried to boot with it but now it is not even detected i have tried all usb ports on the computer and nothing works. Please help how can i get my computer to work again i want to install windows 10 home. Sorry for my bad english, english is not my mother language

Hello, I just finished building my first pc and installed windows in it. When i tryed to go on the internet it didnt work. So i checked my lan cable if it was good in my pc and in the router, and it was good. So i looked on the internet and people said i needed to install a new/ the newest drivers for my motherboard, a msi b150 gaming m3. So i did update it. And it still doesnt see my Lan. The lights under the lan cable on my router in port 4 dont blink either. Does any of you guys know how to fix this? Thnx

So basically I had this not so old crappy AMD test pc laying around and after over a year i have finally have the resources to start updating it. Aim is to spend around $500 dollars on none GPU components for a preferably Intel based system that should be good to not bottle neck the GPU when i get around to adding it in. What i have right now is basically the cooler master elite 343 case and a blue ray disk drive and a crappy 250W power supply. The operating system and storage should not be any problem so that leaves me with having to select a new motherboard, CPU, CPU Cooler, and RAM. (probably a new power supply as well) The GPU I will probably go for in the end will be either a 970 or maybe a 980TI (or if nvidia announces next gen I might wait around and pick up the successor to the 970) So the parts i am planning on buying so far are: CPU: Intel Core i5-6600k 3.5ghz Q-core $235 CPU COOLER : Cool master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 $35 MB: ASrock z170M Extreme4 mATX LGA1151 $100 Ram: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16gb DDR4-3000 $70 Power Supply: Corsair CX 600W 80+ semi mod. power supply. $65 My main concern is if i can get away with not upgrading the power supply until i get a graphics card since on PC Part picker the Wattage comes out to well under 200W. I am def not planning on overclocking the K CPU til i have the better power supply and a graphics card. Other thing would be if i should be looking at another option for the mother board. It seems hard to find good info on mATX mother boards and the only one that stood out with features to price was the exteme 4 mATX. It is my first time with ASrock so i am not to sure how they are. Is it worth upgrading the Cooler to the Hyper 212x for the few extra dollars? Should i get some other thermal compound or is the one provided with the cooler good enough. And finally is this base good enough for VR when using Oculus rift with the GPU's mentioned above or should i consider upgrading something in the build. thanks for the help!!

1. Hey guys, i Know this seems a real noob question but, i recently built my first ever pc and started a small streaming Twitch.tv channel. Is there a way i can seperate the audio sources ? (game sounds, from Skype/TS). I've heard some people that were able to seperate using a Astro A40 MixAmp or something. Do i need a DAC or something else. Maybe some software that allows me to do that ? 2. Also, my next upgrade is going to be a sound revamp aka Studio mic, arm mount, a USB interface like the Scarlett 2i2. Can you guys recommend any good bang for buck mic/USB Interf combo ?

Hey guys, I have a noob question. I currently have a R9 280X Dual-X OC Edition in my build. I wanted to upgrade to a second card and put them in crossfire. I know that the dual-x r9 280x's are getting discontinued right now. I did manage to find one on ebay although it is the r9 dual-x 280x not the r9 280x dual-x OC edition that i have. Will the crossfire still work?? Also is it worth it or just upgrading to a 980ti. Thanks!

Hi, I just got an gigabyte r9 390, I bought it because my 670 died. Anyways, is there a way to overclock my monitor to 120hz like I did with my 670? Does crimson software support that? It denies me when I use custom resolution. I also oc'ed at 1095/1575 MHz with MSI afterburner. Is that low? Voltage is locked with this card which is a bummer. Thanks,

Hi Guys/Ladies on LTT forum! After watching almost tons of LTT/NCIX Tech Tip videos on youtube, I finally appeal to the pros on the forum for my first ever PC Build! Myself: Never really had any experience with full PC building (I had experience with upgrade module like pull out a part and plug in a new part) I consider myself somewhat average on PC knowledge (I know what a ram does and what does PCI means.. I think ) 1. Budget & Location Location: Down under Straya~ (Australia) Budget: AUD$5000 incl peripherals (Do note Australia has ridiculous % of GST and almost every tech stuff is more expensive than the US of A & Canada) 2. Will two sticks of ram sold separately but manufactured are by the same company and are the same model with the same capacity operate in dual channel? I will be using 2 hyperx fury sticks DDR4 if that makes a difference If they dont operate in dual channel will it make a big difference?

I have read some of the "experiences with non techies" and i realize i dont know some basic stuff. For example people were laughing at some dude saying you should use a VGA for the best experience with monitors. But i dont know why thats wrong, i have seen the "fast as possible video's" and "linus tech tips video's" linus, luke and the others make, so im not completly clueless sbout computers. But i still dont know everything, any place where there is somebody that can explain the basics and some of the more advanced stuff? Either in text or video format.

Hello everyone! Names Marcel and I am pretty new to PC and tech in general. I really want to learn all the different parts and what is best. But that's for later. I saved up a bit of money recently (2000$ CAD) and I was wondering if I can get a list of all the parts I can get to build a good PC that runs at 1440p, 60fps, and the max settings. I am a pretty big newb and the only thing that I somewhat know about is graphics cards really. I was thinking GTX 970 or 980 but I don't really know! Also I heard you need good specific monitors so help with that too would be cool thanks!

Hey guys so I'm possibly building within the next month or so and was wondering about a certain situation. So my main budget is $1200(max $1300) with absolutely everything needed besides a keyboard and possibly a processor. My main thing is going to be gaming and college. I'm going in this fall majoring in CompSci but building soon as I will have all the money soon. So my friend recently upgraded to x99 and gave me his 1231v3 and this was the build I had planned. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/D3ZwMp So my question was would it be worth it to spend this much money on last gen hardware? Skylake is almost a year old? I think. And the 1231v3 is 2 years old going 3. Everywhere I see with people possibly building with older hardware people say to just cough up the extra bit for Skylake and be up to date. Also what would be the expected lifetime before having to ugrade if I build with the 1231v3? Any advice would be helpful.

uh guys I know this is a noob question but should i get a dac/sound card? or keep using the chip used in my mobo? I am using MSI'S Z170A GAMING M5. And for music and movies i'll use logitech z506 speakers. for gaming Asus cerberus headsets are my primary choice. and i know that getting a dac or a sound card always doesnt mean a better experience.

I have a Predator 240 and it seems to always be running at an average speed always keeping my Cpu nice and cool.... but its loud. Its constant hummin is starting to get to me and i was wondering whats the best software to control this coolers fan speed? I have it hooked into a CPU fan header so it should be controllable using software but my EVGA x99 micro 2 motherboard wont show me fan control stuff.

So I'm building my second PC and I was looking at the MSI Gaming z170a m7 board, a i5-660k, corsair vengeance lpx 16gb, 240gb ssd, 1 tb hdd, 750 watt psu (over kill but taking from my other build), and im still deciding on graphics card. My question is on newegg the specifications said there is no onboard video chipset, does that mean without a graphics card it won't display? What I'm planning on doing is using a r7 270 for now until I decide on my graphics card, will everything work fine? PLEASE HELP ME

Hey everyone, This is my very first build and I'm lost. I just got into computer gaming and I love it! I really don't have another reason to build a computer except for gaming. I am a pitcher with the Yankees. I travel a lot through out the year. So it needs to be small something the I can get a quality mobo that's mATX or ITX. So far I have gotten myself a little EVGA GTX 980 Classified for this build. I got it on sale for 480 USD. That's my parts list so far. So the big problem is I need a CPU that won't bottleneck my 980 and has at least 4 cores over 3.2ghz for under $200 preferably under $150. I will be waiting till October or later to build this. I'm not afraid to overclock or anything like that. I had my heart set on the AMD FX 6300 but an i5 might be more future proofed. Let me know what you all think! Thank you!

Hey everyone - Welcome to my build log: Noob Machine 1.0 I finally bought my first PC part - Which means i now have to build my first PC! So follow along if you want to help me pick the right parts, and later guide me when i try to assemble it. - If helping is not your style, then grab some popcorns, sit back and relax, while you laugh at the many mistakes i'll make, during the process of building my first PC. The system is going to be used mainly for gaming & office use, and a bit of light video & photo editing. My goal is to make the pc as silent as possible, using components with temperature control, so the fans wont spin under light use. Since i'm not a heavy user i'm going with an ITX system, i like the small footprint, and i dont need the features that ATX systems offer, compared to ITX. I know there are smaller ITX cases like the Node 202 or the ones from SilverStone - But considering this is my first build, i'm going with the Nano S for a pleasent building experience, and parts compatibility.
