I'm looking to build my first desktop computer. I'm willing to put in the work necessary to make it really good but I don't know where to start. I will be doing a lot of video editing, motion graphics and hopefully some 3D. I've been recommended intel, but even with that I don't know what to look for. I definitely need to upgrade. Thoughts or suggestions?

I want to upgrade my PC for gaming.! I want to upgrade my processor from AMD A8-3870K to Intel Core i7 4790K. I am looking for a good & cheap motherboard which can make my machine better. Please suggest me the best cheap mobos in the market and I don't Over Clock my processors, so OC is not my priority - keep that in mind. Also tell me is it necessary to buy a CPU cooler for i7 4790K processor (without OC - without AC room India)?

Who else was hoping for and all black z170 motherboard from msi?

Will the maximus viii hero come with a OC panel like the previous extreme and will it be an E-ATX motherboard? Asus says that there extreme lineup is for insane overclockers which is why it has the start button. Here to get pictures and more information on the z170 lineup of ROG boards http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/421723-asus-rog-z170-motherboards-anyone-likeing-them-update-asus-rog-z170-boards-will-have-rgb-colors/

Hello everyone. I built my computer back in February of 2014, and it has been working like a charm, except now. When I turn on my computer, it will stay on for a second, turns off, and then turns back on and works fine. I have tried multiple diagnostic tests, and I know that it is not the memory, video card, or any of my hard drives. I have yet to update my BIOS, but I will be trying that. Could it possibly be the power supply? It has never shut down on me before, and this is the only issue that I have had with my computer. Any help would be great. Thanks. So I've been choosing a z97 MOBO and I came across the ASUS Maximus VII Formula and the MSI Z97 GAMING 9. Now, the question is, which does include onboard wifi / wireless networking, or do both? THX MarkoCroatiaMC

Hi there, Before I go on, here's my current build: -XFX FX-777A-ZNF4 Radeon HD 7000 Series; AMD; Radeon HD 7770; 1000 MHz; CrossFire; 2048 x 1536 pixels; 2560 x 1600 pixels (FX-777A-ZNF4) -Intel Core i3-3220 3300GHz 3MB Cache Socket LGA1155 Desktop CPU -Corsair CMX8GX3M1A1333C9 XMS3 8GB (1x4GB) DDR3 1333 Mhz CL9 Performance Desktop Memory Module -MSI LGA1155 u-ATX Motherboard (Intel H61, 2x DDR3, GBE, LAN) -EVGA 500B 500W 80+ BRONZE PC Power Supply -LiteOn IHAS124-04 24x SATA Half Height Internal DVDRW Drive -Seagate Barracuda 3.5 inch 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB 6GB/S Internal SATA Drive -Fractal Design Core 1000 Series Micro ATX Case I am thinking about upgrading my current GPU to a Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming at Christmas, but before that, I want to upgrade my CPU so that there are no bottlenecks. I was thinking about buying the i7 3770 (non 'K' version, because my MOBO doesn't allow OC), which is an Intel 3rd generation (Ivy Bridge) CPU. However, yesterday I saw that the Intel 4th generation i7 4790k was the same price as the i7 3770 (non 'K') on Amazon. People have said that the i7 4790k is far superior to the i7 3770, even at stock speeds. With OC, it would be even better. The problem is that if I wanted a better CPU for the same price, I would be forced to buy a new MOBO too, because of the generation socket incompatibilities and also because my current MOBO couldn't take advantage of a 'K' processor anyway. This is why I am thinking of buying a new motherboard along with the i7 4790k. However, another problem remains. I heard that when you change a MOBO, you have to reinstall Windows, and all your data gets deleted too. I'm not too sure about the latter, however the windows reinstall seems believable. I do NOT want to reinstall windows at all. If there is no way around it, I will, without question, stay with my current MOBO and go with the 3770, no questions asked. There is absolutely no way that I am going to pay for another copy of windows (I don't have a disk, I downloaded windows 8.1 from Microsoft's website). My question is, is there a way around having to reinstall windows when changing motherboards? Are there any guaranteed ways to do it? Because I do not want to risk anything. Thank you to anyone who replies. Cheers!

Hi i am planing to build a pc and i was wondering if a h81 or b85 motherboard supports overclocking the intel i5 4690k. i heard somewhere that you need a z97 motherboard to overclock that cpu. is that true i am on a budget and the z97 is a little more expensive so i was wondering if a h81 or b85 motherboard would do the job also what is the difference between the chipsets.

In a bid to save a bit of cash somewhere in the build, this is the selection I'm looking at... These are the 6 cheapest Z97 motherboards that are SLI compatible, and I just wanted to know what the real differences between the boards are! i.e. which brand is better, whether it's worth spending extra over the more basic Gigabyte board, etc. So yeah, thoughts? Note: the next cheapest boards are £126+, and seeing as I'm a bit limited financially, that's pushing it...

Hello, I'm need help with an issue i found on PC Part Picker, I've created a build which i hope to make in the near future with an AMD FX-8350 and a MSI 970 Gaming motherboard. The problem is that there is a compatibility issue, PC Part Picker says "Some AMD 970 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Vishera CPUs." Is this a problem? If so how do i fix it? I've read other blogs and they say you'll have to POST with a compatible CPU, is this right? I don't know what to do... This is the build: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/dcjq8d Thanks in advance.

Feel free to leave comments too. I am generally interested as a whole who you think is the best for the UK, as I assume support and RMAs vary from region to region.

So I haven't made my rig yet. But I am using an Asus Z97 PRO GAMER motherboard. Does anyone know of any good RAM that would match nicely with the board? BOARD: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-z97progamer (Ignore RAM in signature)

So I'm asking for a simple opinion. I'm not using it for a build. I'd just like to know what people's favorite motherboard brand is? (Optional) What's your favorite motherboard in particular? (Doesn't have to be in your build.) I'll start. I LOVE Asus. Love their BIOS, board colors and styles. I just am an ASUS fanboy. I love their cards to. My favorite motherboard is the ASUS Z97 PRO GAMER because of it's coloring, and it supports SLI. and it's only $230 (AUD)

Hey everyone! I've been reading this forum for a while now and I've been stuck on an issue with my first build, so I thought I'd ask everyone here! I'm doing an X99 build, and will most likely be using a 40-lane CPU. What motherboard do I need that will support all of the following? 1. Intel 750 PCIe SSD (running at 3.0 x4) 2. Samsung SM951 M.2 SSD (in the actual M.2 slot) (running at 3.0 x4 in the 32Gb/s slot) 3. Graphics Card (running at at least 3.0 x8) 4. Another empty slot for potential SLI upgrade in the future (at at least 3.0 x8) So far, what I've found: The MSI X99 SLI Plus Motherboard can do almost everything I need, with a good amount of space between GPUs for airflow, except apparently the M.2 slot will only run at 3.0 x2 if I have the dual GPU + PCIe SSD running. I think some bigger motherboards can support it, but they have crazy color schemes. That's why I like the X99 SLI Plus so much. But right now I just want to know what motherboard will support my setup, colors are second... I guess My final questions: 1. What motherboard will support this? 2. Is it possible to move around the bandwidth for PCIe slots in the BIOS to allow for more bandwidth to the M.2 slot? 3. How does the Intel 750 SSD (or any PCIe SSD for that matter) fit into multi GPU lane allocations? Is it treated as just another GPU lane allocation wise? I don't know if this was too long or if it was the right way to post, but thanks in advance to anyone that can help!

Hello guys, I have been thinking right now and kind of.. curious if i want to start editing in "Adobe After Effects" an create/work on 3D environments in "Cinema 4D" i'am also a competitive gamer in CS:GO, should i consider myself gettin' a Workstation Motherboard for all the stuff that i do with it? or should i just get a good Gaming Motherboard due to it's price being lower than Workstation Boards? i'm really curious i would like you guys to tell me the advantage of having a Workstation Board that is Involved in Gaming.. let along the editing on a Workstation. simply how does a Workstation Board performs while gaming and overclocking (That's if i can do that comfortably) because i'am aware about Gaming Boards because i have one already.. PS, These are my specs: http://i.imgur.com/t2PdlaF.png(Took the screenshot using the Greenshot program) Thanks for reading and the best regards! - Joe

I want to upgrade my whole rig now. I wanted to step on with new X99 chipsets LGA 2011-3 platform. I m looking for this config:- Intel i7 5820k, 15MB cache, Asus X99 deluxe or Asus X99 sabertooth, Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 Quad channel memory, Corsair Hydro Series H105 CPU cooler, CM storm stryker cabinet, Asus Strix GTX 970 4GB Graphics card, Corsair HX1050W PSU, Now the problem I'm facing is that I surely want to buy Asus Rampage V Extreme but Its way too expensive. So I couldn't decide which board I should go with out of the two. There are hell lots of reviews of X99 deluxe but not much of X99 sabertooth. It comes with TUF armour n both boards look really nice. Another thing is that, If I can use Asus ROG Front Base with these boards as I m not sure if it is supported with boards other than ROG series. So anyone with some help is welcome. And I personally want to request Linus If he can do a comparative review of the two boards or may be include Asus X99 pro too.... Asus X99 Sabertooth vs Asus X99 Deluxe vs Asus X99 Pro.

I got a question for school, I just need to know if the answer is correct or not. Question: Explain the function of the system clock. How does the CPU manage to operate at a higher clock speed to the rest of the system? Answer: The CPU uses a much higher clock speed than all the other components due to the fact that the mother board uses a multiplier so that all components can function at a common frequency in this way the multiplier is used as a sort of translator. Thanks<3

Hello, my current motherboard and processor is totally out-of-date, I'm deciding to get a new one. I'm going for a i5 4690K CPU, but I can't decided on which Motherboard. I'm not really a tech-savvy kinda guy which is why I'm asking for some suggestions, pointers, what's more important and what's not. My GPU is also out-of-date (MSI GTX 560 Ti) which is why I'm thinking of getting Gigabyte GTX 960 G1 at a later point.. These 3 is what I'm currently deciding on.. //MSI Z97 GAMING 7 //ASUS Z97 PRO GAMER //GIGABYTE Z97X-GAMING 7 I'm sorta going for the MSI Z97 Gaming 7, just wanted to know if the other 2 would be a better choice. And I'd most probably a Cooler Master NEPTON 120XL for cooling. Thanks! __ Current Rig Specs: MB: Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 CPU: Intel® Core i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti RAM: X4, G Skill Ripgaws 4GB PSU: FSP 750W Aurum Gold 80+ Modular DISKS: Intel SSD 120GB, SEAGATE HDD 2TB Casing: NZXT Phantom (Full Tower)

Hello, This is my first post on the LinusTechTips forums! I'm so happy to be here! Anyways, long story short, I need a new motherboard that will be compatible with my new RAM, and I have no idea where to look or even how for that matter. I received some new RAM sticks from Corsair - they're not compatible with my motherboard. Like, the slots are there for all four of them, it's just that I believe that my motherboard can't take 64GBs of RAM at one time lol. I have 32GBs installed right now, if that helps for anything. The RAM that I received are 4 sticks of Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB DDR3 at 2133MHz. Side note: I play hefty games like GTA V for PC, so I would love a gaming motherboard if even such thing exists. I also have no price range - so go wild lol. My Computer's specifications: OS: Windows 8.1 PRO 64 bit. CPU: Intel Core i7 4770K @ 3.50GHz Haswell 22nm Technology. Motherboard: Hewlett-Packard 2AF3 (SOCKET 0). Graphics: Sapphire Radeon R9 290X 4GB Battlefield 4 Edition - I abhor Battlefield. GTA V PC for life. RAM: 32.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (11-11-11-28). Storage: 1863GB Seagate ST2000DM001-1CH164 (SATA). Optical Drives: hp BDDVDRW CH30L. Audio (if this even remotely matters at all): AMD High Definition Audio Device I shall provide more information if needed. Thanks so much. #LongLiveLinus, -Will.

I'm super new to PC's and plan on building my first rig in about a month. I have a question about this motherboard that I want to get: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132125 and was wondering how to tell if has built in wifi/bluetooth because I am not near a router and can't plug in ethernet. If it doesn't, how can I optimize it for wifi/bluetooth?
