What Did I do?: This is Avexir RAM that has had the heat sinks removed. To keep the ram cool inside my new custom case I have got some basic ally heat sinks. However, the yellow LEDs are not covered up which I thought would be a bad look but I'm not sure now. Once I've got everything in the case I will decide if I want to cover the LEDs with small pits of electrical tape. These are the only images that I managed to get due very bad camera support with my ROM. While I'm working on this, I don't plan on uploading images from this camera for much longer. I have some Nikon's around here somewhere that I will be switching to. Anyway, here are the pictures. Whats Next?: This weekend I have a build log in the pipeline for my main blog, Smokey's Chronicles. In addition to this, I have made some progress on the 290x red mod. This will likely be up tonight too but I've been delayed today. Nothing serious I just had to work late and then sort out this new build. Thank You :)

What I Did: After I fixed the DVD drive and installed Ubuntu on this machine I discovered that the WiFi card was broken as it wouldn't register. I replaced that with one from a HP mini and let everything update. Three weeks after, it was too slow for me. Only 2GB of RAM was killing me so I nabbed another stick and tried swapping the processor. No luck with that but the RAM upgrade went fine. Next was the HDD, Kingston 300V 60GB SSD is the boot drive now. I got rid of the DVD drive all together and bought an adapter so I can keep the original 120GB drive for mass storage. One install of windows 10 later and I'm looking at an almost brand new laptop. Apart from the faded and scratched paintwork. The final steps in this project were to remove the speakers, never used them, and to spray the casing black. Unfortunately, the primer I used had a poor hold in some places. Resulting in some faded patches. I decided that trying to fix them would probably make it worse anyway. Everything was working fine, until my BIOS calmed to be corrupted. happened out of the blue on day at college, when I restarted it was fine but had a password. Still haven't managed to get past this. Phoenix and Dell passwords don't work. I need an eeprom programmer to get it. Until then I have got by with access to the boot loader menu. Today I took apart the machine and replaced the heat sink and fan. Used some of the MX2 paste for my GPU mods. Here are some images of the mod. This wasn't what I had hoped to add to the blog today but I had issues with the other build, I've had to shuffle my days around for the next two weeks. I'll put the plan at the bottom of the entry. Whats Next?: This Saturday I am in my office, building desks and worktops ready for the build coming Sunday. I will let out more details on this in Saturdays entries to this blog. I have so much stuff arriving next week that it might be hard to get big updates out for the Smokey Attempts blogs, not to say there won't be updates. I will have the summative GPU mod on the Drawer blog for next Sunday and big updates of the dedicated Red Mod blog next Friday and Saturday. As for other things, I have some old hardware that I'm going to be doing some mad stuff with. I'm planning some oil cooled stuff for next month so keep an eye out for that. Other that those things I will still be uploading snippets to this blog about random things like tiny heat sinks, buying experiences and what not. Thank You :)

Stripped Naked 290x ;) (no human nudity here you dirty beggars)
Smokey77 posted a blog entry in Smokey Attempts: The Red Mod
What Did I Do?: To prep the 290x for VRAM, VRM and Processor cooling, I stripped it down. This is an MSI reference PCB card. It came with a stock cooler but unfortunately I cannot show you the removal of the cooler as it's already done but OC3D have a Corsair HG10 review where you can see it step by step. So, moving on, Here are some images of the nude card. Note I have also removed the PCIe cover because this card is being used in my current custom case. You can see the progress of this build in my other blog "Smokey Attempts: PC In A Drawer". I am also storing this card in it's original anti-static packaging, so don't worry to much about that one. Thank You :) -
I Currently have a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 that i have been thinking about modding a little bit. I want to change the accents on the Heats sinks on my motherboard. I was thinking plasti-dipping them red would be the safest and least permanent if i hate it, But the heat sinks are pretty small and weird shaped on my motherboard sure I'm not sure how to do it. Does anyone have any magic technique for covering up the motherboard or making this task any easier? (I'm aware Linus did a video that was some what similar to what i want to do, but in that video he was coloring an Asus Sabertooths "thermal Armor" Which was probably a lot easier.)

I would like to order some custom sleeved extensions for my power supply and send my case in for airbrushing. If anyone knows someone who can do either of these please post their email, website, or other form of contact information. I will be using a Corsair AX860i power supply and the Cooler Master Storm Stryker case for my build. Any references would be helpful. Thank You in advance!!!

Hello everyone, I am almost done with project mancave, and you will see that in build logs soon. For my birthday, my sister got me a 12oz can beverage cooler to accompany my Mountain Dew bingeing addiction. The cool news (see what I did there?) is that it can also run on 12v DC, is surprisingly quiet, and pretty much runs on case fans. I wanted to run it off of my PSU, because I have an AX1200i, and am only using around 800w under the heaviest loads. The thing only uses 60w so I am in the green there. Also, most mid to high end cases have one of these which doesn't fully get utilized 95% of the time. So here's the plan: take one of these: Match it up with this magical very legit looking diagram And hook it up with Molex Good bye trusty fan tester :'( Its gettin snipped. Anyways, I already pounded a hole in the back of my case but need some O-rings to keep it in place. It is 2 in the morning where I am at, and this little town of 3000 doesn't have a 24/7 hardware store.....Shame. I will keep you updated. Any that say this is a ridiculous idea, thanks. I am just doing this for the fun of it, because all my other projects are on hold due to Christmas shipping times. Thought I might share an affordable use for those stupid holes.

Show me your custom loops or modded cases. The thread is only fun if you post pictures so try to do so. I want to do a build of my own and I'm looking for fun and creative ideas. Feel free to ask each other questions and just share your knowledge.

Alright so for some reason even thought there a re so many cases on the market right now i still cant seem to find one i like. Most cases fit everything i need but i am having trouble with aesthetics. I'd really like to get a full tower and my price range is around $100-$150 and i would love to get a custom made like MountainMods or CaseLabs which i would be whiling to spend $200 for but that doesn't seem to be enough. The most important things to me are good looks, large nice looking window, must fit e-atx, good quality, bigger the better, and good cable management options.

Hey guys, i'm new here, and wondering if there are any others out there that have done mods for the X51. I plan on doing a PSU mod next year after warranty expires. Any suggestions like Water Cooling would be nice! Cheers! (Don't hate on my pc choice people)

I got bored today, took an old GTX 560, and attached a cpu cooler to it. Temps are 29C avg under load, and I know the fan isn't facing in the most ideal direction but this is the only way it would fit without pressing into the motherboard. It was a fun little experiment and i wanted to share : ) Whats the most ghetto mod you've ever done to your rig?

Getting a GTX 970 4GB soon and was wondering if 4GB is enough for heavy modding in skyrim, and please let me know what graphics card you have, how much vram is on your card, and what is your performance like with skyrim mods and/or any other games that you mod, whether it is heavy modding or light modding. And I also was wondering if this is how vram works: if a graphics card has 4GB of vram, the game will use up however much vram it needs to run and whatever amount is left over is what can be used for modding. Am I right with this? My specs: i7 4770k @3.5GHz (overclocking soon) ASUS Sabertooth Z87 ADATA XPG 16GB @1866MHz 128GB ADATA SX900 SSD & WD Black 1TB HDD Seasonic 750W

Hello forum users , I just thought to make a thread about suggested maps, mods, and managers for the aforementioned things, for Custom Zombies (W@W) so that people could give their opinions on maps they have played before, along with mods and managers they've used. Personally, I loved Annihilation, having 8 perks with 3 paped weapons from W@W, BO and BOII is so fun in a huge room for ample chance for training. Nazi Zombie Defense is also a good one, with friendly AI that can take out a few zombies in the earlier rounds, and serve as ammo resources later on if needed. I've played a load more and two good places to stop by to get some maps or mods are UGX-Mods and ZombieModding. Hopefully this thread actually gets viewed, unlike my previous thread about Zombies... Cheers!

If you guys could have any color you want for your computer build theme what would it be? Do you guys think the companies should start adding more color variety? I want green, not the lime green we see all the time.

Just finished the U15 update, swapped to Valkyr to change my mods and all the ability based mods are missing. Is there something I'm not understanding about the update or is my game broken? Here's a link to what I'm talking about since apparently I can't embed Steam images.. Update: Upon checking the Codex, ALL ability mods seem to be missing. Update 2: Turns out they're automatically applied now?

Greetings beautiful people of this forum! For an upcoming build, I want to make look as clean, and simplistic as possible, I am wanting to get some backplates for my reference 780ti s. I personally think that asthetically the EVGA ones do more harm than is worth it. I just have the standard blower style stock cooler, as comes with most reference 700 series cards. I was wondering if this plate would fit on it w/o a waterblock I also do not want to watercool, because the lack of humidity in my area cracks the tubes (at least the flexible ones) and considering the time and money I am spending on this build already, I do not even want to consider acrylic tubing. http://www.ekwb.com/shop/blocks/vga-blocks/fc-backplates/nvidia-geforce-series/ek-fc780-gtx-ti-backplate-black.html Maybe I'm just an idiot and completely reading this wrong, but I understand it as it only fits on those waterblocks. Thanks for all your help, and may the force be with you!

Hello. I recently decided that I would clean up my Skyrim mods and start using Mod organizer. I watch allot of gopher's videos and he recommends it highly for modders that have a little more experience. everything is working fine with MO and I really like it. However when I got to installing SKSE ( for skyUI and immersive HUD) everything worked fine for 2 start ups and then this... This happens every time I try to launch SKSE and I have no idea why. I have tried changing the directory that SKSE launches from (the binary column) but it just changes back to "D:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Skyrim\Skyrim\Mod Organizer\stylesheets" every time I launch I am running MO in admin so that is not a problem. Can anyome pls help me.... ;_;

Okay so my problem is that all heavy armor and weapons have disappeared. Have you ever made just one little tweak to your system that made it sooo much easier to look at? This is the first time I have done something so small, that still made a big difference to me. First, I will have you know, that I have a Thermaltake 850 Smart M series PSU. Unfortunately, it is only semi-modular, and so the 24-pin and 4x2-pin cords are permanently attached. This would be FINE, if they didn't look like this: It's an eyesore! So I decided to do something about it. I went shopping for the cheapest blue braided cables I could find with decent reviews. These came up on Amazon for 5 bucks. So, it was time. I opened up the case with gusto, and unplugged the ugly vermin cables that had drawn my eyes for almost a year. This was their time to go into hiding. And so they did. They now reside in the depths of hell, behind the motherboard tray. After blending old and new, the time had come to introduce the new power-giver to the rest of the parts. It wasn't easy at first, they would not bend freely to my will. But as time went on, they gave way to my threats of fire and snips. After a while, they allowed me to bend them to meet their final resting place. It was a match made in heaven, and they could not be happier. Even at night, it looks as if there will be no problems. Except maybe a yell or two from the old replaced neighbor behind the tray. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Share your story with me! Have you made some small tweak to your system that makes a big difference? Or a difference just to you? Let me know. This could be fun, and give some people some new ideas maybe.

I don't know about everyone else, but I am personally a big fan of the ASUS TUF and ROG thermal armor covering and I am a little upset that they don't offer any armor kits except for the Gryphon mATX board. Does anyone know where to find custom made motherboard covering kits or if there's a mod that's reasonably simple to make one? I have an ASUS Z97-A.

Budget: $5000.00 USD. Not willing to go over. Aim: Purely Gaming. No video editing/recording. Ultra settings on anything and everything is desired. Monitor: one monitor 1440p or whatever games best. Periphials: Need keyboard and mouse, gaming quality. Why Upgrading: I have a ps1, playing metal gear solid over and over is getting boring. I refuse to buy another console. I like the Corsair 900D case but not required. Plain looking is fine by me.

Hi all, I have a bit of an unorthodox problem: I have a Logitech G500 and I lost the screw which attaches the scroll wheel toggle switch located below the wheel on the mouse. I disassembled the mouse a while back to clean it and the screw is lost. Does anyone have an idea of what size screw this is? I had to use an extremely small screwdriver to remove it.

Hello all! This is my first post here, so I hope that I put it in the correct section. I have just bought myself a Corsair Graphite series 780t, having been enamored with it since Computex 2014. I watched the recent 780t review from the channel, and Linus made a fantastic point: the case would look fantastic with a separate power supply compartment. I know right now it is really too early to see any well implemented mods on a 780t, but I was wondering if there are any products on the market that would perform a similar function, or if I would have to cut and bend the metal myself. In case someone has not seen the bit of video I am talking about, here is a link: Thanks in advance!
