Greetings. At some point in the next year, I'm going to be moving to another country to study at a conservatory, and since I can barely pay for my education, a laptop for college is something I cannot afford. Thus, I was looking for ways to make my current rig more portable- and the first order of business is replacing the bulky mid-tower full-ATX case it sits in. I need it to fit the following components. A MicroATX motherboard. A 10.7" GPU A 3.5" Hard Drive A Standard ATX power supply. I would also prefer not to spend a whole lot more than $50 on it, but if a small premium can get me a much more compact case, so be it. Your suggestions and recommendations are most welcome. Regards, Aereldor.

I have never build my own computer. I started buying gaming laptops around 2008, and transitioned into the desktop world by "building" an iBuypower computer in late 2013. My current setup is showing its age. NZXT Phantom 430 case ASUS ROG Crosshair V Formula-Z FX-8350 Black OC to 4.5ghz NZXT Kraken X60 cooler EVGA 970 FTW with slight OC 16gb A-Data ram 120GB SSD boot, 2TB Seagate Hybrid SSHD ASUS VG248 144hz & ASUS VE248 60hz Monitors AZZA 1000W 80Plus Bronze Windows 10 This computer has served me well for about 2 years, the only upgrade being the addition of the 970 FTW over the 660 that came with the computer. I want to transition to small form factor, mainly for the space savings, without compromising on performance. I look at both mATX and mITX and decided on mATX for the extra expansion slots, so I could add a PCI SSD or Wireless card etc. Here are the components I have considered so far. Fractal Arc Mini R2 or Fractal Node 804 Still researching Motherboards but leaning towards the Gigabyte z170MX-Gaming 5 i7-6700K Skylake Quality 240mm all in one cooler Hydro version of 1080/1080ti when released. 16/32GB low profile quality brand ram M.2 120/240 boot SSD 1tb 850 EVO for games and 2+TB WD storage 80Plus Gold PSU capable of running everything I plan on both the CPU and GPU having all in one coolers to allow for some overclocking and noise reduction. I never plan on going SLI but still want the extra PCI slots if they are ever needed. I also haven't worked out a budget because, I want to get it right and plan on assembling it over a several month span, buying one or two components at a time. Like I said this is my first build and I want to avoid as many hangups as possible. My biggest hurdle is finding the right motherboard, that is the one thing I want to get right. Any advice or critiques on what I have so far would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone! I will be building my first computer some time soon, and I will probably get a microatx case. My cpu will be the g3258. Now I know that I can overclock this cpu on the H chipsets, but due to future proofing I was thinking about getting a Z board, because the first thing I probably will upgrade it the cpu, but not sure if I want an unlocked. Should I get a Z97 board? And if no, should I just go with a h81 board or get a h97 board? Thanks

Hey i'm Remi, i'm 16 and looking to build my first pc. 1. Budget & Location I live in the UK and have a budget of roughly £1000 2. Aim My pc will be used for school work, gaming, capture/ streaming and editing. 3. Monitors M plan on having 2 1080p monitors to start with and get a third if i need more screen real estate 4. Peripherals I do not need an os i will be getting a windows 7 key from a scrapped laptop, i have possession of most other peripherals i need but will probably upgrade them later 5. Why are you upgrading? I am upgrading because i currently use a gaming laptop with a 640m which overheats all the time( see attached photo), i also want less wire's on my desk(currently there is the output to a monitor usb hub charger ect) I have a rough idea of what i want, I've been planning it for a few weeks, I'm still not sure whether to go for a r9 390 or a gtx 970 PCPartpicker:http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/FMKvzy i plan on running the ssd's in raid 0 with the m.2 as the boot device and files such as video being stored on the hard disk. i went for micro atx because i am low on space, but need more features than an itx board can supply. Thank you in advance for your help

Hello everyone. So I'm planning to upgrade to ZEN as soon as it comes out, but I'm planning a leftover build for my old motherboard and stumbled upon this adorable case. http://riotoro.com/cr1080/ I know it just came out, but any shared experience with this case would be appreciated. I need a new case for my main build as well, and was thinking about getting two of these. Who has thoughts?

Well i've been building this small beast and planning his creation since August of last year. Day by day buying each part until today where i got my planned beastly AiO cooler by EKWB the predator 240...... but it won't fit... in the corsair air 240.... the pred. 240 was actually a little more bigger than 240, so i have mounted as right now to the top of my case on the outside of the case with the top panel off. I'm kinda at a loss of what i should do. My only options i have in mind is buy a new case to fit all my part but i don't know any specific cases that are micro atx that will definitely fit the pred. 240. I'm hoping someone here can help me with recommendations on a case or a way to make it fit or something. If you want to look at the build here it is on PcPartPicker.com http://pcpartpicker.com/p/qYTZkL

Hello, guys! I'm planning a build for my girlfriend and I'd like it to be micro Atx, while still allowing her to have the needed performance. She is no enthusiast pc gamer, but she enjoys the ocasional TF2, don't starve and other light 2d and 3d games (mostly on the TF2/CSGO range). Also, she uses a lot of Photoshop for digital art. Currently, she is used to a Haswell 1.7Ghz i5 notebook, with 8Gb of Ram and a mobile nvidia Gpu. For cost and small form factor reasons, I'm thinking about using this config: CPU: A10 7850k RAM: Kingston HyperX Savage 8GB 2400MHz DDR3 CL11 Mobo: Asus A88xm plus HDD: 1TB WD Blue Case: Thermaltake Core V21 PSU: EVGA 430W 80 Plus White DVD Drive Since the A10 is quite capable for light games, I was thinking about going for a no GPU build, which I can upgrade later anyway. What do you guys think? I want her to be able to run her PC at 1080p and play the games I mentioned at 60fps smoothly. I'm installing Windows 8.1 on it, by the way. Thanks in advance for any help

I currently am on the Red side all the way. Older Phenom X4 CPU with dual 290x cards. I was going to watercool the gpus and upgrade the CPU, but my 290x's are not wanting to overclock and work for me. I was getting helped about a new CPU and my GPUs not cooperating but got pulled over to the Blue side of PCs. I have decided to get either an i5 4690k or i7 4790k or something close to it without burning my wallet. I will probably say F*** it and get a titan x to keep me good for years to come. All will be housed in a Thermaltake Level 10 GT, and I will eventually (probably the following year) get a Thermaltake core V21 so I can have a small footprint. I am having a huge issue, however, on what motherboard to get. Please help. I am looking for Micro ATX, 4 mem slots, more than one PCI-e/PCI slots for expanding certain features if need be, front usb 3.0 header, and over-clockability. All this is a must. All comments, suggestions, disagreements are welcome. Thank you in advance. Forgot to mention... so far the most demanding game is GTA V.

Hi all, Just wondering whether the motherboard I've selected in this build is suitable/compatible? I'm only concerned because at the bottom of this link, it says: "Some Intel H81 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Haswell Refresh CPUs." I'm new to pc building, so I haven't a clue what this means in relation to the rest of my build- is it related to the i5 CPU I've chosen? Here's the link: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/tgxkYJ Thanks, Tim.

Hi there, Before I continue with my question, here is my current build: -Asus Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 Strix Graphics Card (4GB, GDDR5, PCI Express 3.0) -Intel Core i7 i7-4790K CPU (Quad Core 4GHz, Socket H3 LGA-1150) -Asrock Z97M ANNIVERSARY MATX Motherboard Socket 1150 (Intel Z97, 4x DDR3, 4x SATA III) -HyperX FURY Series 8GB (2x 4GB) DDR3 1866MHz CL10 DIMM Memory Module Kit - Black -EVGA 500B 500W 80+ BRONZE PC Power Supply -LiteOn IHAS124-04 24x SATA Half Height Internal DVDRW Drive -Seagate Barracuda 3.5 inch 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB 6GB/S Internal SATA Drive -Fractal Design Core 1000 Series Micro ATX Case My current case is definitely not one of the most impressive ones out there, but it's served me well for over a year. I would however, like to upgrade from my current case, due to mine not having a cable management side panel (I literally have cables in front of my components, which I know causes extra heating), and it doesn't quite have the greatest cooling or silence. I'd like to get a new 'budget' case for no more than £50 if possible. I would definitely like a side panel where I can tuck away all the cables out of sight (it doesn't have to have a glass side panel, a solid case would be fine), and preferably a case with great cooling. I don't really mind sound all that much, as long as my PC isn't overheating. Thank you to anyone who responds. Cheers!

Hello! I am new on LinusTechTips and I am hoping to join a good community that can share some helpful insights. I haven't built a PC in over 15 years, and I was travelling a lot so I used a laptop (Macbook Pro) more than anything else. Now that I am settling down with my family, I am craving to build a good quality Workstation and occasional gaming PC. Budget: More or Less $2000-2500 Main usage: On a daily basis I use a Macbook Pro for work, which include running Office Suite, coding web apps, maintaining web servers and quite a bit of Photoshop and Illustrator. I want to transfer some or all of these tasks to a desktop for more comfort while working at home, and when my wife allows it, sneak and play some AAA games for 2-3 hours. Choice in OS: This is where it is tricky for me. I have always loved OSX for my daily computer usage (photo editing and especially coding), and I prefer to run code on a UNIX base OS than Windows. I found Windows tedious for running languages such as Ruby, maintaining databases, and I am more comfortable with Terminal than Window's shell. I have experienced some issues with some of the Microsoft softwares on Mac (such as their CRM...), so I had bootcamp on my macbook pro and it works fine that way, but its a bit of a hassle to jump from one to the other. So for my new PC I will first install Windows 10 to enjoy better compatibility with all the Microsoft softwares we use for work, and benefit from playing some games. I was thinking I could replicate on the new PC something similar to Bootcamp with a second SSD drive with either Linux or OSX (if at all possible, but I read that over time it can run issues with driver compatibility) in the event I need to work for a couple of hours on a UNIX system for coding. OR invest in a second monitor and have my macbook pro connected to it, but switching mouses and keyboards is also a hassle . What are your thoughts on this? The build I am thinking: Probably a pretty standard build, nothing out of the ordinary, though you may have some better suggestions! . Prices are for new components, I could probably find cheaper at resellers or (slightly) used. PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($216.99 @ SuperBiiz) I was initially thinking of using an i7 and thought it would be more useful for graphic design work (photoshop and Illustrator) with hyper-threading. But $120-150 difference is a bit steep, so I am still considering. I do some graphic design and photo editing but not extensively, so I am not sure if Hyper-threading is entirely necessary. I do run quite a bit of tasks behind when I run a web server, running code in the background, and doing other stuff on Excel, Word, Photoshop at the same time. What do you think? I was also considering a Skylake processors, mostly for investing in the future with the compatibility with USB 3.1 Type C. If I go with Skylake, the costs of Memory and Motherboard will also increase. CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i GTX 70.7 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($104.99 @ B&H) I will Overclock the CPU for the fun of it, but probably not by much. Seems like Overclocking modern CPUs doesn't change much. I could go with a Heatsink and Fan like the Be Quiet, Noctua or Cooler Master (cheaper and they look nice), but takes a lot of space in the box and may get a bit too close to the RAM sticks. Thermal Compound: Arctic Silver 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver 3.5g Thermal Paste ($6.39 @ OutletPC) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($108.99 @ SuperBiiz) I wasn't sure which motherboard to go with. This one had good reviews on newegg and pcpartpicker. I appears to be built with quality components and has onboard sound. Only 4 PCIE slots, so I can either do a SLI/CF bridge between cars, or 1 Graphics card and a sound cart + network card (optic fibre modem and router are not in the same room unfortunately). Up to 32Gb DDR3 Ram, but I will be using probably 8GB. It also has 1 M.2, which I don't know how to use yet. And plenty of USB 3.0 and 2.0. Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($47.99 @ Newegg) I could go for more (useful for photoshop) or with a higher clock, but I don't really see how I would need it. In your opinion, should I go 2x4gb or 1x8gb? I could go for other brands, but I don't really care as long as it works. Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($169.89 @ OutletPC) Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($108.99 @ SuperBiiz) I can fit 2 SSD in there, mostly for running the OS, and coding files. Read & Write speeds on many code files is pretty important in my opinion. For Media storage 2TB HDD is good enough, I am however worried about the sound it makes, and how long it will last. HDD have a tendency to break quickly and you need many of them for backups. The other concern is the HDD cage is not in an ideal location in the Corsair Air 240. I could place the HDD under the graphics card, but it clutters the machine a bit. Alternatively I could go with External Hard Drives Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB Superclocked+ ACX 2.0+ Video Card ($659.99 @ Amazon) Mostly for my hours of fun on the machine ^^. Since this is a new build, and I don't have other cards, might as well invest in the best I can afford. When it starts getting old, I can buy a second one for SLI goodness. For Photoshop, I don't think this card affects much... Case: Corsair Air 240 MicroATX Mid Tower Case ($77.99 @ Micro Center) Between administrative paperwork, work paperwork and mommy and baby stuff, I don't have much space at home. So I want to go with a Micro ATX. I love the Corsair Air 240 case because I could have it sit on my desktop next to my screens and still have some work space for the macbook pro and paperwork. I also like the Corsair Air 240 because it looks fairly easy for someone who hasn't built a custom computer for many years. The window is a plus to see my achievement Power Supply: Corsair RM 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($119.99 @ Amazon) On PCPartPicker, it says my max wattage is about 471W, so with a 750W PSU I have some room. I considered a 650W, but if I decide to upgrade with second GTX980ti, then the wattage may go up to 680W. Build quality looks good with sleeved cables and fully modular. If its energy efficient, great, but the electricity bills will still go up with this machine (by a bit) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM (64-bit) ($89.88 @ OutletPC) Case Fan: Corsair Air Series AF120 Quiet Edition (2-Pack) 39.9 CFM 120mm Fans ($24.15 @ NCIX US) Case Fan: Corsair Air Series AF120 Quiet Edition (2-Pack) 39.9 CFM 120mm Fans ($24.15 @ NCIX US) Noctua fans seem great, but I hate the colors. Corsair Fans look good. I think 2 fan on the top (liquid Cooling radiator) and the back (if it fits) for Outake, and 2 fans on the front for Intake. Until I get the case, its hard to figure out the fans placement. Monitor: LG 24EA53V-P 60Hz 23.8" Monitor Already purchased monitor that is usually connected to my laptop at home. I could invest with the remaining budget in a second monitor 1440p to go with the Geforce Keyboard: Logitech G710 Plus Wired Gaming Keyboard (Purchased For $129.00) Mouse: Logitech G502 Wired Optical Mouse (Purchased For $79.00) Total: $1968.38 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-10-28 05:11 EDT-0400 Extra Parts: - I might need additional Dust Filter or grills if I can find - Sleeved cables. Its an investment that will make the machine cleaner and nicer in my opnion $80 So what do you think? Thanks! Zed

What are some of the best Micro ATX boards I can get with a LGA 1150 socket? I bought my firends 4th gen i5-4690k because he upgraded to a skylake, only his old motherboard won't work in my set up. Right now I'm think of going with an ASRock Z97, but I don't know if that's the best option.

If your reading this then you have come across my build log of my first pc build i started planning at the beginning of 2015 when i first saw this build on Gamespot. I wanted my build to be future proof up to about a year or at least with one or two upgrades or additions to 2 years. So i went with the evga x99 micro 2 motherboard for the support of c usb and ddr4 ram not to mention the blistering speed of a m.2 m support on it for a ssd. I'm honestly still really noob at building and what makes sense but i didn't want to run into any bottlenecks so i decide i would wait till 2016 tax return to buy my 980 ti's so i could have them both run together. If not that maybe a titanx and the rest on the oclus rift consumer version this whole build is planned to run. The micro atx was a must do to the limitations on space and need for slightly more than normal transportability. I have almost all the parts i need as of 12/27/15 except for the motherboard, cpu cooler and gpu which i plan to get next year. Here is the final parts list of this build.http://pcpartpicker.com/user/wonderous1/saved/#view=LCk323 If you have any advice or comments please let me know. Advice would be greatly appreciated like which specific m.2 ssd would fit in that motherboard and likely not get in the way of other parts of my build.

Hello, and thanks for reading this already! I'm planning a build, meant to read e-mails, sort out photo's, browse the internet, that kind of stuff. Is there any good budget mobo's? Price as low as possible. Budget, max around 80€/89$/59£. It doesn't need to look good (no window in the case), but 3 case fan ports and 4 RAM slots are preferred, not necessary though. There's a solution for too less fan ports, right? EDIT: IM AN IDIOT. Socket: 1150 LGA. Celeron G1820 Sorry! Thanks in advance!

I recently purchased a NEW 5930k/GTX 960 bundle for $500 because it was too good a deal to pass up.The 960 is going to go into my current G3258 media center. I no longer build full tower systems nor do I use more than a Single card solution for my GPU so my Dilemma is the following 1. Sell the 5930k for a 4790k and build my mini ITX gaming system in a Corsair 250D or Build a x99 system Micro ATX system in my current 350D or 3. go nuts and build an X99 ITX system in my 250D with this motherboard http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/X99E-ITXac/ and this RAM http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-PC4-2133-Registered-288-Pin-CT16G4RFD4213/dp/B00KK8XNLA/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1428445157&sr=1-6&keywords=16gb+ddr4

I need help looking for and deciding on compatible and sensible parts for my first build attempt and I am going for a Micro ATX sli config that should be future-proof which is proving to be difficult and ambitious. For parts I have chosen:- - BitFenix Pandora for the chassis, - Going to try squeeze 2 GELID Solution Silent5 50mm fans in the rear to improve exhaust, and replace the stock fans with Cougar Vortex 120mm - Intel i7 4790K - of course - Cooler Master Nepton 120XL for the CPU cooling - Any quiet 80+ power supply, >850W and <180mm for the PSU - Either a 2TB Seagate 7500 rpm hybrid or a 128 SSD/1TB HDD Combo - G.Skill Ripjaws X 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory - SilverStone Silent Foam SF01 - for sound dampening - 2 GTX 980s or I might wait for the rumored GTX 980 Ti. If I go with the GTX 980 it is between; - EVGA Superclocked with reference cooler - EVGA Superclocked ACX 2.0 - ASRock Fatal1ty Z97M Killer Micro ATX Motherboard (An edited picture closest to my desired build) I have multiple questions about these parts: 1. I chose this motherboard instead of others because of the space I can have between the GPU cards and that both slots are x16, however the bottom PCIe is version 2.0 and the top is 3.0. Would SLI still be capable between PCIe slots of different versions? Also how much of a hit to performance should I expect if possible? If SLI isn't possible, I would probably get the EVGA Hybrid to counteract the spacing's issue but would the card with its tubing be able to fit in such a slim case? There is no way I will attempt custom water cooling the GPUs. 2. Would it make a noticeable difference to the internal case temperature and performance choosing the card with the rear exhaust over the typical aftermarket card considering the size of this case (which card would be better)? 3. Would the power supply being what looks like 2mm away increase temperature and restrict airflow around the bottom card causing it to thermal throttle, especially the card with the ACX cooler? 4. Is the airflow Cougar fan in pull and the fan that comes with the Cooler Master Nepton 120XL (which I assume to be static) in push ideal, or would 2 static fans be better for this case at the front. 5. Would placing the 3.5" hybrid drive infront of the PSU and below all the cables instead of at the provided mount at the top cause any harm to it? I am thinking of trying to mod the top so I can install a second 120mm fan. 6. Would the sound dampening foam effect temperatures and the difficulty of cable management with this specific case? 7. Is there anyway of connecting 7 fans to a board with only 5 fan connectors? 8. Are 2 GTX 980s likely to be enough to max out any game at 1440p with respectable (45+) FPS for the next 3-5 years? 9. Is this too ambitious for someone who has never built a computer before lol

I am looking for a new minimalistic case with a large side window. I need at least two HDD bays and one SSD. I will need a case with enough clearance to fit gigabye gtx 970 g1 gaming which is around a ft. My motherboard is micro-atx so I need appropriate mounting holes for it. I am thinking if getting the corsair obsidian series 750D airflow edition.

Hey LTT, It's been quite a while since my last post here, and I have a question for someone more knowledgeable in the area of liquid cooling. I've been using a CM Hyper 212 EVO for the past few years in my various builds, but my current rig would benefit from a nice AIO after thinking about it recently. I'm concerned about the stories of AIOs failing and causing leaks, which is why it took this long to decide to go and look for one. My Rig: Operating System: Windows 8.1 64-bit Case: Fractal Design Node 804 Motherboard: ASRock Z97M-OC Formula CPU: Intel Core i7 4790k CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO RAM: 16 GB GPU: Reference GeForce GTX 980 PSU: Seasonic 660W 80+ Platinum Storage: 128 GB SSD for Operating System, 1TB HDD for everything else Any recommendations or potentially good new releases I should look out for? Thanks for any assistance, greetings from Alaska.
