  1. Hello guys, Today I came with the Idea to build something like a mediacentre PC from my old desktop office PC. Included parts: Motherboard: MSI H61MA-E35 Processor: Intel Core i3 2100 Cooler: Stock Graphics: On Board Storage: 1 TB Seagate - Blue Ray Drive - Windows 7 Is it possible to do something like this? I know that I need a graphicscard, which one do you suggest? (~150€ = 158,45USD = 208,91CAD) Do I need some other things? Is another cpu cooler needed? Have a nice day!
  2. Hi there , i have some media that i would like to host on my server for clients to connect and stream my media from their phones , tablets etc ,,, the thing is that i don't know what i need to buy . 1- wich server is better for media streaming 2- wich OS is the best for this Note : i want to create something like netflix , but with a different content , if you guys can help me with some advice i ll really appreciate it .
  3. Hello. My name is Liam and I'll go straight to the point. I've been interested in media since the age of 13 but didn't have the proper equipment (such as a microphone) to start. I now have them things, have had them for months, but been waiting for my birthday to get a new GPU since mine is quite old, and therefore having a better quality when recording. I am looking for some friends who can play on PC/PS4 at the ages of around the 17 year old mark. I am 17 years old personally (as of the 22nd) and I want to be friends with people my own age. For the last few months of deciding not to do YouTube until I get my equipment/components, I've been learning how to handle my recording software and do some tricks with some editing. Although I'm not great with editing, it does take one a while to master. Though I have found my own way to compress video files with a great quality to around 300mbs every 10 minutes (10 minutes footage = 300mbs roughly/estimately, but also depends how much it has been edited.) Anyway, I've learned and I guess know decently how to handle my recording and editing software. So that's cool. I live in the UK, and that's pretty much all you need to know about me. I'm not particularly great with groups (a fair warning), and I'm a quiet person, but normally I don't have problems socialising. Just with talking non-the-less. Also, I don't like swearing verbally for my own reasons. You can find all my social media on my profile in a status update. Thanks.
  4. Plex just announced their newest service available to Plex Pass Subscribers, cloud based Plex Cloud through a partnership with Amazon Drive. Source: https://www.plex.tv/blog/book-plex-volume-3-plex-cloud/ Source: http://www.theverge.com/2016/9/26/13056216/plex-cloud-means-saying-goodbye-to-the-always-on-pc Source: https://techcrunch.com/2016/09/26/plex-partners-with-amazon-to-launch-a-hardware-free-media-server-plex-cloud/ Plex Cloud will function just like a normal Plex Server, albeit minus a few functions at launch, however entirely in the cloud. The service is beta invite-only to start. You can sign-up here: Plex Cloud This is an interesting concept. It removes the need to have an always-on PC that's powerful enough to stream your media as well as store it all. Honestly though, that's a big drawback to for a majority of users who have MASSIVE media collections. I don't have anything near as crazy as I've seen but I still have 5TB of media. The idea of uploading all that into the cloud doesn't sound pleasing either. The amount of time that would take on my 5mbps upload limit would make it not worth it at all. Plex Cloud in a nutshell as stated by Plex themselves:
  5. Doing my head in, I am new to Free NAS, so learning as I go, I followed all the steps to gt it up and running. I need this solved ASAP.Basically this is where I am at, I created a volume just fine, created a share just fine, got up to the point of adding to Windows 10,... Win 10 can find it for some reason under \\IPADDRESS\homes, however gives me an error message, before it gave me an error code of which I have forgotten but now after verifying and changing many things within Windows, I am convinced that something isn't right in the FREE NAS itself but I have no clue where to go. The error message is basically: IPADDRESS\homes not available, check admin for permissions... if you got access etc, Device attached to the system is not functioning... Please help!
  6. So I am moving to an area where internet is extremely challenged. Challenged to the point where it would be impossible to stream my Plex outside of the house. So an idea I had was to set up a high powered WiFi antenna so that I can direct play within the town. Ideally I would like to also let my friends/family be able to direct play too. Basically I don’t even know where to begin to look in to the possibilities, requirements and limitations. If you want to give me great in depth info, I am all for it. I know that is asking a lot so if anyone can just point me in the right direction and I can research on my own. My initial concerns: range/stability network requirements for multiple users cpu requirements proper raid setup Every time i google anything it directs me to full on commercial setups which is understandable and I don’t expect this idea to be cheap. I just don’t know what is appropriate for my idea vs worthless/overkill.
  7. Heysan To Yall here from Denmark I have been watching a bunch of your video's on how to get a good NAS/Server/Cloud Solution. And comming from a home that burned down in 2006, Im sort of getting to a point, where data security and backup is becomming essential. I have approx 15 TB of data I need secured at this time. So Im looking for a total solution that allows me to do the following: - Work from my home laptop localy, which auto or manual backs up to 2 locations. 1 local server fx my old Synology DS414 or something new... (it currently has 4 x 4tb disks, raided in synologys ovn raid setup) 1 cloud server (currently Dropbox, but space is far from whats needed). Would like something with cheap backup space for 40 TB. Have been looking at something like crashplan which currently has no limit. And the one device could be my synology server or which ever new device we build Both must be secured or even encrypted, so I dont loose all to identity theft or hackers!!!! I have seen multible attacks on the synology server, once it goes online, which kind of scares me. Most seem to originate from China or india, but could be masked IP adress. - Filetypes or folders I need to access remotely and have backup of: Documents (i write a lot), Videos from training and coaching sessions, My digital audio library, Digitised DVD's, Workfiles like powerpoints etc, Software install files, game install files and maybe a steam and origin library (dont play much, so not essential), backup files from acronis, Our life in film photo and video library (note that all events have a seperate folder/tree struckture, which I need to keep) - Option to remove the local copy, but still have the 2 backups (to free up local space on phone or laptop for other new stuff) - Account management (username and password/single signon) for Direct and remote access from any device android, windows, browser or ios based - Content streamable to any device. Fx via app? - The Local server can be remote booted and turned off to save power, and keep harddrives working for longer. (this server will normaly only be on a few times pr month, when emptiyng phones for pictures or when access to files are needed) - Good pictureviewer. Fx Synology has a photostation, that allows to view photos. I cant however get it to work with my filestructure, and I want to be able to allow access to specific pictures and videos from that tree, to certain family member groups, and keep the rest private. Rights will be selected upon upload. So my usecase scenarios i want to cover: 1. A hacker takes control of one of our 3 computers, because we clicked one of the clickbaits. We flush the device, and puts the latest acronis image on the device to completely restore all. 2. Latest version of the acronis backup was contaminated and system is taken over again or infected. We flush device and revert to one of the previous images. (normaly I keep a max of 3, but I was told there is such software that only backups 1 original image, and then adds changes to the next backups. Can acronis do this, or is there another? 3. We take a picture or video. Once on wifi, the files are auto synced to server. My only issue here is how to sync into my file structure. Folder is called "2019 08 14 - Event name" or "2019 08 14-23 - Event Period name" 4. One of the phones is full, and we are not shure all pictures have been synced to server. I want to see all files individual syncstatus like fx dropbox shows. Then I chose remove from this device only. Pictures are now safe on the server and in the cloud backup (after backupplan has been completed) 5. One of the images is a good one, i want to share with "family member group". We click picture from any device, and select share with... and then select the group. Group can now se that picture and only that one, as well as the other individual selected pictures or videos. 6. Family Member group log on to app/cloud/other and can now se/download, maybe even comment each picture. They can also send them to a photoframe, that slideshows all shared pictures from all familiy members. 7. Other family members like our new solution, and wants to use our setup for their files. We create a useraccount and a folder just for them and admin. They can now also share with the same family member group. Or maybe even connect their own device like apples icloud folder for family or similar. They might also want to backup documents or other stuff. But this is only bonus feature, as most of this will need some sort of privacy filter. 8. I do a training/coaching session and safes pictures, audio or event videos from the session on my laptop. Folder autosyncs to server, and I now select share with trainee/coachee. They now have useraccount which allows access to those files. I dont want server to stay running, so a temp storage place like dropbox, might be a good way to have a temporary storage place. 9. We want to watch a movie. We start the server remotely via app or other? We select movie and play to chromecast, which is attached to home media center. 10. We have sonos in the house and have yousee music service attached. But a number or playlist is not possible to play, as yousee dont have all music in the world, but we have it on cd. We start server, move numbers to fx dropbox playlist folder, which sonos can access. Then we play music like always. 11. Same as before, but this time we are at a party, where I want to share some god video or music number. I remote boot the server and select number, then streams online to whichever system is working there. Either via my phone to jackstick or to chromecast. 12. Its time for the weekly backup. Server auto boots, and syncs the local databackup files. Server shuts off automaticly once backup is complete. It also syncronise all photos/videos/docs etc, from all devices added to the storage. Before shutdown, data is send to cloudservice backup service as well. 13. A picture was in the wrong folder. Its moved on any device to the right folder, and this change is autosynced, as soon as the server goes online again. 14. Server hardware fails. CPU fx. Part is replaced or disks moved to new server setup. Settings are also backed up, so even though the new server might have better options, old settings can still be reused. 14.1 Disk fails. Alert is send via email or sms, once home, I replace damaged disk, and server initialise the new disk and recreates the raid volume. In case multible disks fail, they are also changed, and backup from cloud is flashed onto the new array. 15. I want to share just one or a few large files. A share link is send via email, which grants read right to that file alone. Again a service like dropbox could work for this, however space in the dropbox is very expensive to expand beyond 1 tb. 16. Electric bill is to high this month. Backupplan is changed to once pr 14 days. just to save a little extra. 17. Once a year al the old boys come together for a LAN party. Server is booted and all game libraries can now be shared by others. 18. Cloud is hacked/deleted/bombed by terrorists or other. Local server is attached to new backup service, and new deal is made for backup. There are probably many more scenarios I want to cover. However my biggest concern is keeping the monthly cost down. - Electric bill - New disks every 3 years (which is the normal runtime for a servergrade harddrive i supose) is to much. Must last longer. Thus not needed to be on all the time. - Cloud service bill must be low. 10$ pr month is okay, but more than that will screw this private server backup initiative up. Today i use - Free dropbox with 12 gb space for file sync. (have been getting 50GB promocodes with new phones, but stil space runs out to fast) - 6 local harddrives attached to usb hub, powered on one every 14 days, to create a manual backup - Synology server has been taken offline. File management and transfer speeds are anoyingly slow and does not work like windows file explorer. Copy paste fx, or search for dublicates is a nightmare. Much easier from the 6 local harddrives. - 1x 4 tb external harddrive has the second backup of all family photos and most important documents. All other data, only has one copy on the 6 harddrives, unless copied to one of the laptops. - We have a private group chat on facebook for sharing the few family photos. (i hate this solution, as I dont know what facebook does with our photos, and takes years If you want to go back more than a few weeks) This is just for my family and I as a private solution. Training/coaching sessions is a hobby, which I dont charge for, as I have a fulltime job selling patrolingsystem to manned guarding industry. I do keep my workfiles in dropbox for easy sync, but i am very worried dropbox is not safe enough. Not even for private photos. I really hope to get some good feedback on how to create such a solution in the best cheapest way possible, maybee even se a comparisson chart, comparing lifecycle vs cost for always online server, vs a server that turns off, for all costs like disks needed, electric bill, hardware failiure after multible years of running, hardware upgrades etc. Hope this might also inspire a god video on the subject "Family shared photo and video NAS + Backup cloud service" Thanks for reading Benjamin K. 8. My problem: Even with all recommended "Trade quality for performance" options selected and fairly tame filtering I still get low performance (~15 fps when I should be getting at the very least 24). I really doubt a setup this old and widely-used takes hardware this good to run minimally well. My bulid: ~2-3 year old ASUS gaming laptop with MPC-HC with LAV, madVR, CCCP, XYsubfilter and ASSmod (because they don't always both work) i7-6700HQ @ 2.60 GHz GTX 960 (4 GB) 16 GB DDR4 RAM 1TB HDD and 128GB SSD Windows 10
  9. [Windows 10] I have the Corsair K95 Platinum keyboard which has media keys, and the Pause/Play key is the one I'll focus on. This all started once I rebooted a few days ago, most likely a Windows update. If I have a Youtube video or Twitch stream open in one of my Chrome tabs, even if not active, will take priority of my media key instead of Spotify. No clue how to fix it
  10. Hi guys I have an older HP wireless keyboard. It's really nice to type on and it works very well, my problem is that I want to use the media keys on it, but they don't work on Windows 10. Only the volume knob and mute button work. It has integrated music, browser, media skip,play/pause,disc drive open, email and more buttons. These are all really useful and convenient, but I can't get them to work. Do any of you know how to make these buttons work? Thanks for your help.
  11. I am transferring my plex media server to a different installation of Ubuntu on the same system. I am having trouble with the transfer however. I have followed the Plex guide step by step but for some reason Linux won't recreate the plexmediaserver directory for me to put the server data in. I installed the plex media server application from the Ubuntu software and ran it but it still won't create the directory. If anybody has any experience with this and has any ideas i'd love to here them. Thanks in advance
  12. I would like to get some feedback and input from the community (and LMG itself if I could ? ) on some plans I had for making a really cool [network/systems/setup] for my planned house (not my current house as I want to build a house when I get enough money and time scrapped together). My setup isn't intended to be the biggest or best, just something that meets my intended needs for a few years without needing upgrades. Thoughts and suggestions on Hardware, Software, Design and/or Implementation Instructions are all welcome. I know some stuff on a lot of different things, but with this communities help I know I can get better. I also know their is some sweet refurbished and used deals to be had on enterprise equipment, but since I'm not doing this immediately those deals will be long gone. If you want to recommend one and provide the reasoning based on the hardware/software that would be helpful so I can look for a similar deal when i start purchasing. First thing is I want a 4 post server rack for easy management and a central location for everything that can be sound "proofed" (at least reduced a lot). I know this will make my cable runs a lot longer, but I figure I will either keep things 20% within their maximum run limits (HDMI is 50' so that means 40') and except additional latency or add repeaters inline. Unless anyone knows a way to get a DIY modem that's not much more, I'll do a store bought ($180 for a Netgear CM1000 for gigabit internet). Which I might not get gigabit internet, unless the price is right. I'd also have a router which again I think I'd like to have a personally built router in a 2U server chassis, but a regular server mountable 24 port router will probably be cheaper. I need to connect a lot of items upto (4 desktops, 1 media server, 1 modem, 1 printer, 2 consoles, 6 smart TVs, 4 WiFi access points and then a security system or several IP cameras or both). I know Linus has gone pf-sense which sounds great, but I'm open to other options. Of course a custom gaming pc is on the list! I'm thinking a large 4U case to easily accommodate everything. I'm thinking a really good system, but just below enthusiast. Something like {processor with 12-16 threads, 3GHz+ base clock; mobo with 2 M.2 M-key NVMe SSD slots, 4 DIMM slots, 3 PCIe 3.0 x16 slots; RAM 2x16GB, 3200MHz, CAS14; PSU fully modular, 700+W; Powerful Video Card; Boot SSD 2TB, NVMe 3.0x4; Acceleration SSD 512GB, NVME 3.0x4; HDD 7200 RPM, 5TB; Windows 10 Pro; a few case fans; a case (custom if there is nothing that works)}. I would have the cabling to a nearby room for three monitors; 7 port usb hub for keyboard, mouse, speakers, headset, mic and flash drives; a second usb hub/cable & an HDMI cable for VR. A second gaming pc for the wife of course ?! Still large 4U but not as good (she doesn't play that much and she wouldn't want to spend the extra to match mine) something like {processor with 4-12 threads, 2.5GHz+ base clock; mobo with 2 M.2 M-key NVMe SSD slots, 4 DIMM slots, 3 PCIe 3.0 x16 slots; RAM 2x8GB, 3200MHz, CAS14; PSU fully modular, 500+W; Great Video Card; Boot SSD 2TB, NVMe 3.0x4; Acceleration SSD 512GB, NVME 3.0x4; HDD 7200 RPM, 5TB; Windows 10 Pro; a few case fans; a case (custom to get it right if there is nothing that works)}. I would have the cabling to a nearby room for two monitors; 7 port usb hub for keyboard, mouse, speakers, headset, mic and flash drives; a second usb hub/cable & an HDMI cable for VR. Additional desktops, but those will be later when the kids are old enough to game with us. A plex media server, I am a pass subscription holder. This would be better in someways to my gaming system, I want to be able for the entire family to watch stuff and potentially all transcoding. Something like {processor with 12-16 threads, high clock rate; mobo with 1 M.2 M-key NVMe SSD slot, 4 DIMM slots, 2 PCIe 3.0 x16 slots; RAM 2x16GB, 3200MHz, CAS14; PSU fully modular, 700+W; Boot SSD 512GB, NVME 3.0x4; HDD x8, 7200 RPM, 10TB; Windows Server; a few case fans; a case}. My thought is to load up windows 10 (pro so I can remote into it) and plex server on the ssd (could go sata but intel 660p is cheap and faster as long as I only use like 1/2 the drive, which probably wont do that much), then use storage pool trick to "RAID 10" the HDDs (http://www.cornercoregeeks.com/2013/06/tricking-windows-and-create-software_23.html) thus allowing me to add drives as needed. Unless I'm wrong on something and you can add drives to a hardware raid 10 without reformatting everything. I'm probably going to go crazy with providing ports to every room in the house, but I also want to do Wifi. I'm thinking of doing 4 "router" really just access points {1 each for the two large capacity spaces (family and living rooms); 1 for the rest of the house; 1 for the back patio}. I plan to have a console or two, printer and like 4-8 tvs (some smart and some not). A security "system" whether its a bought and ready to go or lots of POE IP cams that I connect to a switch and house another server to deal with. I do like the phone accessibility and two way communication features and also want to record to my own storage without some stupid monthly fee. A friend recommended the blue iris approach and that i pick out a POE switch and some cameras. I also like the idea of smart lighting in and out side of my house. I currently have 4 Philips Hue light bulbs I've tried out with a bridge that i really like. If I was to do it for my planned house though I'm guessing I would need about 150+ lights (bulbs and strips) and 25+ switches which means 3+ hubs. This is a ridiculous bill if I solely use Hue lights and devices. That's what I have priced below, but definitely don't plan on doing it, just need something to beat ?. My guess is IFTTT somehow. I also saw BLE beacons which I could incorporate in my house and have cheap BLE wrist tags for family and guests and then do proximity based lighting and effects (super dreaming here, but the online community has worked magic before). 13. Hey guys, so when I hook up my PC to my TV I get like a slight stutter every 3rd or 4th second when watching videos. I know issues like these are common, so I researched on the internet. I tried everything that sounded plausible to me, but nothing resolved the issue. That includes playing around with all my TVs settings, and switching around resolution settings (and more) within the Nvidia Settings. It is a smart TV so it doesnt matter too much, but I was thinking about going Hue Sync (since Im already a hue customer ^^) and that'd only work with a computer. Maybe you guys can help me figure this out, or point me to the right direction in order to learn more and resolve it myself. I just cant sit back and forget about this since Im just frustrated having spent this much money and not being able to simply watch a video on my TV off of my PC. (like with the whole Hue Sync idea aside) Now my GPU is a MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X 8G, my TV a LG 49SJ800V, which has a True Motion 200 ("real" 100Hz) panel, according to LG Service. Obviously, when hooked up to my 27 inch Asus Monitor (75Hz 1440p) nothing stutters and also with an older 1680x1050 display I never had any issues or had to play around with settings. This issue does not happen while gaming/general usage, but only when consuming video. It persists apparently independently from: - which monitor is set as the main one - having only my tv or the 27inch hooked up (or both) - resolution (4k 60hz, 59 hz, 50 hz /// 1080p upscaled with a 120hz or 100hz) - which port I use (TV, GTX only has 1 hdmi) - hdr mode - nvidia quality settings - nvidia settings for chrome - vsync - energy settings - my desire to stream worldcup soccer without throwing a tantrum haha [(btw: my TV has no "PC mode" but it lets me turn off any setting like noise suppression / making it more fluid / vivid, which I tried; these effects indeed make movie watching very nice (set on a low lvl) but the stuttering issue still exists)] In advance: Im very sorry if I missed out on something very obvious. I hope you guys can help me out, since wanting to watch stuff on my TV does not correspond correctly anymore with the amount of frustration Ive already had. maybe this is a common Chrome issue? (which I just cant imagine) maybe its like an anti aliasing or texture thing that the GPU does? have I overseen some obvious setting I should try and turn off/on? Thanks alot for your time and greetings, Chris!
  14. I'm looking to install some form of media center software on an old laptop I have (it still runs windows 10 fine) but I was not at all happy with osmc on a raspberry pi. The apps for youtube and amazon video were absolutely awful (poor interfaces and youtube didn't even show thumbnails). What I'm looking for is different media center that can run youtube and amazon video. Being able to mount an smb share and access files off of my nas would be a plus but not a requirement. Perhaps openelec? Also, I'd like to be able to use the windows key on a different computer, as OEM keys are no longer locked to hardware iirc, though I'd have to install windows again to even find it.
  15. I have several Terabytes worth of data from back when I used to do freelance videography for local business and since then have created even more media that I'd like to archive locally have a good way to store it. I just bought a 10TB WD Red NAS drive to copy all 12 years of media too, but what would be a good way to manage that drive on my local file server? I have a home server that is running Windows Server 2012 Standard edition, and I usually just copy and paste data when I am done with it. But after some time, copying and pasting data isn't a good way to compress that data down so it takes up as little space as possible. How or what can I do to shrink the large folders down into a small size to properly use the 10TB drive? It'd be good to do it using free software as well too.
  16. The goal: I would like my media keys to function when I'm tabbed into a game. I imagine a world where I can have tv on in the background (2nd or 3rd monitor)while I game and with a click of my play/pause button stop vlc playback during the cut scene. Currently the media keys only work if I have the VLC window selected. Keyboard: Cooler-Master Storm Devastator. Mediaplayer: VLC
  17. Howdy, I'm looking to build a couple of new rack-mount media servers for video output in the corporate AV and concert world. The highest priority is having 6 to 8 HD outputs (1920x1080/60fps). As far as I can find there are no single GPU's with this capability, so I will be looking at dual GPU (non-SLI) setup. I have built 2 smaller media servers earlier this year (see components below), but these were built more around gaming specs than server/workstation specs. They have been doing a great job, but I would like to build something more robust. The highest priority is having 6 to 8 HD outputs (1920x1080/60fps). As far as I can find there are no single GPU's with this capability, so I will be looking at dual GPU (non-SLI) setup. What disadvantages may I face with dual GPU and sync issues? Would I be better off building 2 separate 4x output servers than trying to build 1 8x output server? Will workstation grade CPU's (xeon) be a better option than gaming cpu's? Dual processor? (specs of current servers) Mobo - ASRock Z370 Taichi CPU - Intel i7 8700k (stock) Mem - 1TB 970 EVO M.2 RAM - Vengance LPX (2x16GB) DDR4 2666 GPU - EVGA 1080Ti SC Black Edition Input - Blackmagic Desklink Duo2 PSU - EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 G2 80+ Gold Case - Rosewill RSV-R4000 4U (looking for a recommendation on rack case as well) Here's are a few examples of a top-level media servers. https://www.green-hippo.com/hippotizer-media-servers/taiga/ https://www.avolites.com/products/video/media-servers/rx-series#Vtab156 https://www.disguise.one/en/products/pro/4x4pro/#features These suckers cost from $30,000 to $60,000! Obviously a lot of that cost is proprietary software and these have more bells and whistles than what we're looking for. But we want to build a top-level machine that can compete with output capability of the Hippotizer Taiga. The desired specs requirements are purely video driven. Ideally - 6x DP outputs cable of simultaneous full HD at full frame rate + 1 HD preveiw monitor output (DP, DVI, HDMI, whatever) - 8x DP outputs of HD would be the true ideal (again, better to build two machines of 4x output than one machine of 8x output?) - capability to run simultaneous 3x 4K outputs at full frame rate - ability to handle 4-8 layers of detailed, quick moving full HD media across all outputs- - 64gb RAM (quad channel?) - dual 1TB SSD - BlackMagic Input card (desklink duo2) If you're familiar with media software, we want to build of few of the most badass Resolume machines we can. Thank you for any help. Be well. Budget is fairly wide open.
  18. I am wondering that backup techniques are people using or what techniques are recommended for backing up a media server. Personally, I have a Plex media server with some 4TB of media files that I am looking to back up. Specifically, I'm only interested in strategies for backing up all the movies and tv series on it as I'm already backing up the Plex database and the OS separately. I am thinking any kind of hardware/software RAID/real-time file sync-ing would not be appropriate for large media files. I am considering a file sync-ing backup that runs every 24 hours or every couple of days (I am not adding files very often and changes to files are rare) and that syncs the media files from the main media hard drive to a secondary hard drive in the server would be the best option. I am very curious about this as these types of backups of movies quickly eat through a lot of available storage space. My server has 20TB of storage, but with all the 4K movies and now even 4K TV series out there, that media library can grow fairly quickly and hard drives don't seem to be getting any cheaper (rather the contrary). What backup techniques for media files are you guys using and what other options should I consider?
  19. I have asus rog gl502vt with i7 6700hq , gtx 970 m 3gb ,12 gb ram . i want to turn my old laptop to a media server . any guide i have to follow for best experience. thank you in advance.
  20. Hey there guys! This here is my first entry on the forum so if I’m doing something wrong please tell me Now my question: I’m planning to sell my PS3 + games to cuz I’m simply not using it anymore. But I still have a fairly large collection of Blu Rays that I’m still watching with the PS acting as my current player. Tho I’m not sure wether to replace it with an external Blu ray player that connects directly to the TV or just get an external Burner/Player that connects to my PC as they’re way cheaper and my PC is connected to the TV anyways. So are there any disadvantages in using a pc-bound player or can I save the extra 100€ or so? Cuz I can’t really find anything why TV-bound player have any advantage whatsoever. Thanks in advance PS: 4K is not a necessity, would be nice to have tho.
  21. Hi, I have some spare parts from my old PC that I'd like to put to use in a media PC that I connect to my flatscreen in the living room and control it with a wireless keyboard+mouse for example. 1. Aim Chrome browsing, Netflix, Popcorn-Time, basically for watching shows/movies mostly. 2. Monitors Philips 49PFS4132/12, 1920x1080, 49 inch (124 cm), 50 Hz 3. Peripherals Logitech K400 Plus Wireless Touch (?) I currently own these parts: MOBO: MSI B250M PRO-VDH https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B250M-PRO-VDH.html RAM: HyperX 8 GB DDR4-2133 (2 x 4GB) https://www.hyperxgaming.com/us/memory/fury-ddr4 CASE: Sharkoon VS4-V ATX Midi Tower Case https://nl.sharkoon.com/product/16037 Should I get a CPU with integrated GPU to save some money? I saw this AMD A8-9600 that really caught my attention because it's only €55 where I live, seeing as it's a AM4 socket I was wondering if there is a similar 1151 socket CPU with integrated GPU at the same price range. The cheapest CPU I can find is a ‘Intel® Celeron G4900’ which has an integrated GPU (I think?) Then I’d add a ‘Kingston A400, 240 GB SSD’ or ‘Crucial M1100, 256 GB SSD’ for my OS as they are both only €40, then maybe a ‘Seagate BarraCuda, 1 TB HDD’ after a while for some extra storage. Then for PSU I was thinking this ‘Xilence Performance C XP500, 500 Watt’. I also have 2 spare case fans I can use, 1 for intake, 1 for exhaust. To connect my mouse/kbm combo I’d have to use a bluetooth adapter like the ‘Trust Bluetooth 4.0 USB Adapter’ https://www.trust.com/en/product/18187-bluetooth-4-0-adapter If I’m missing anything let me know. I’m not very knowledgeable in tech area’s. TIA
  22. So I don't really have any pictures of the progress of this, its dragged on for almost a year because it was kind of a weekend project and as you can see its still not complete. I still have some wires that I need to clean up that are still running out the door and there's also a broken jack on the bottom patch panel but for the most part it is done. Everything is CAT6, I used Monoprice riser cable for all the horizontal cabling runs because believe it or not it is actually better quality cable for the price than other brands. Monoprice is solid copper, many boxes you find on Amazon or god forbid eBay are aluminum copper clad. All the patch cables and panels are CAT6 and I have a 1Gbp link all the way back to the VDSL modem. The MikroTik is handling PPP and all the DHCP, NAT, etc. So far the MikroTik has worked wonders for me, I'm still working out some kinks trying to implement IDS/IPS with snort integration with the MikroTik and also trying to set some bandwidth limits. Eventually the demarc on the outside of the house will be moved and trenched with new line all the way out to the DSLAM but for right now everything is working like a champ. All the equipment (Excluding consumer grade modem) is grounded and I've also got a dedicated ground on both the DSL and cable lines. Hope ya'll enjoy, if you have any questions or advice I'd love to learn.
  23. Hi all!! So i'll try to make this specific as possible. I'm a videographer & editor. I also run a small organisation where we create content. I've reached the point where storage is becoming an issue so one of the solutions i've been looking at is building a NAS running FreeNas. In terms of my requirements, I want to build a media server mainly for storing/logging footage/files with decent transfer speeds locally and remotely. I will eventually want to ensure editors have remote access to the files on the server to download and edit and then uploading it once done. I may also want to look at the possibility of encoding via the server but this isn't a necessity right now. In terms of form factor, i've been considering the Fractal design NODE 304 so i'd like hardware recommendations around ITX boards. I've been getting mixed reviews around durability of standard motherboards vs server motherboards.. soo... I'd like come clarity on thaht if possible. I'm not limited to ITX but it's an initial preference. I'm looking to have some seagate ironwolf pros or WD reds NAS HDD up to 16TB run in a suitable raid set up. I'll probably begin with 8-12TB. I'm looking for suggestions on the type of: PSU CPU MB RAM please provide rationale for suggestions. I don't want to spend a lot. I'd say my budget is £500 excl hard drives. But i'll push more if needed. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
  24. So, i'm looking to turn my old PC into a backup file and media plex server. The case i'm currently using is my old Zalman Z11 which was nice case 5 years ago but is really showing it's age now. What i'm looking for is the smallest case that will house a full ATX mobo and power supply, a full size GTX 970 graphics card, a 2.5 inch SDD, 4 x 3.5 inch hard drives and a dvd drive. I know most of these components wont fit inside the "modern" style case since they don't tend to have that many bays, so i guess i'm looking for modern case with some old style capabilities. I'm guessing it'll have to be a mid-tower. The look is unimportant since it's going under a desk, but i'd like it be as boring and square as possible. The Zalman was a nice case 5 years ago, but all of those anglular plastic pieces make it a real dust magnet and impossible to clean. Anyone have any suggestions on a good case to choose.
