This may be quite old now (announced like a month ago), but VM never did an official press release/announcement and has kept quiet about it so far. Anyway, starting from March 2014, all customers will be upgraded according to the information below: Download | Upload 30Mb > 50Mb 2Mb > 3Mb 60Mb > 100Mb 3Mb > 6Mb 120Mb > 152Mb 12Mb > 12Mb So the new plans will now be 50Mb, 100Mb, 152Mb Bear in mind this is Megabits, not Megabytes. In reality, 50Mb produces 6.25 Megabytes/second 100Mb = 12.5 Megabytes/second 152Mb = 19 Megabytes/second

Hi, I've been here for almost a year now, mainly looking at those gorgeous build logs, but I need some help with a potential build I'm planning. My growing collection of media files is growing out of hand, and my ageing external hard drive isn't sounding healthy. The plan is to build a small scale NAS, around 8TB with some redundancy (RAID6) leaving me 4/5 TB of usable space. It will live next to the TV, connected over HDMI. I've had an Apple TV in the past and would like it to be as simple as that to view movies and TV shows if possible. The main questions I have are; 1) Expandibility With a decent RAID card, can an array be expanded with additional drives and how easy is it? 2) Components I've pretty much decided on 3TB WD Red drives, but does anyone have any other preference and why? I've heard 4TB drives sometimes don't play well, is this true? 3) Software So far looking at freeNAS, but do I need some form of 'front end' to actually view the files? Would something else be a better option? XMBC I've looked into I'm not experienced with these things. So the bits and pieces I'm looking at so far: MB + CPU - Gigabyte GA-J1800N http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-483-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=2803 Case - Lian Li PC-Q25B http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-433-LL&groupid=2362&catid=187 PSU - Corsair 430 (Already own from a previous build) Fans - Some form of Noctua I think, something quiet. RAID Controller - HELP! Storage - 16GB stick for OS - 4 * 3TB WD Red Drives in Raid 6 (With more to come when needed) Ok, there we go. I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Hi guys, So, let me start off with my setup: FreeNAS Server AMD Phenom X4 @ 3.20 GHz 8GB of DDR3 1333MHz RAM USB for OS 4TB Seagate HDD with 40GB SSD for cache Connected directly to Router via Ethernet My PC i5 3570k Connected to Router with PowerlineDLink 500Mbps Powerline Adapters, these Wireless Router ASUS RT-AC68R using 5.0GHz (AC) signal Connected to Powerline network with a Powerline adapter that has a Gigabit port (this was important in my purchase) Chromecast/TV Google's Chromecast device Sony 42" Bravia HDTV Connected to Router via AC Wireless Plex Media Server Running on the FreeNAS system alongside Transmission (BitTorrent client). Streams locally at 720p or 480p. Alright, so, I am using Plex Media Server to stream a video to My PC, which then casts the video from it to the Chromecast on my TV. Unfortunately, this saturates my network which somehow causes the video to be stuttering on my TV. Because of how I'm doing it, it is going over the Powerline network twice. From Plex on FreeNAS over ethernet to the Router over powerline to My PC, over powerline back to the Router, then to the Chromecast over wireless. Obviously this is relatively inefficient. It'd be much better for it to go from the FreeNAS system & Plex to the Router then to a device (say, a phone) and then be cast onto the TV. However, then it'd be going over Wireless twice, effectively. Casting things like Netflix and such to our TV works fine, but with Plex it doesn't, and the way Plex's full screen works requires me to use Chrome's (the browser) full screen cast feature, which is in Beta, to actually watch the show. It works somewhat fine using Tab casting, but certain things either get cut off, or it causes the stuttering to be worse. Not sure why. Plex is set to send the video at 720p (although switching to 480p didn't help at all), and Chromecast is set to send at whichever Plex is set at (I change it myself). I think I'm just reaching the limits of Powerline, even if it's supposed to be 500Mbps which is of course the theoretical limit, but I would expect at least 100Mbps minimum. I'm surprised this setup didn't work better honestly. It just seems like there's enough good hardware here to make it work well, but apparently not. Side Note: Chrome's Screen cast makes the audio sound very tinny. It's horrible.

Hey guys, my boss has a large collection of DVD's that he's spent a long time ripping onto a NAS. He has ripped them using programs such as DVDFab and ripped them in the complete dvd structure in Video_TS folders. He would like to watch this content on his HDTV in his living room. He does NOT want to use an HTPC in the living room, so please do not suggest this solution (And yes, I know it'd work). Also something like a raspberry pi would also not work. What kind of set-top media players support this functionality? Wifi enabled is preferable but not strictly necessary. I know that XBMC via a HTPC can support this - can anyone confirm that the Android XBMC set-top players can also support this? I ordered him a WD Live TV unit, but he (irrationally) thinks the unit is cheap and low quality because "it's small". He has the view that a larger/bulkier/heavier device is generally better. Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Hi Guys, So I'm trying to edit a video with Sony Vegas Pro 12 and I drag in the raw files from my hard drive. From here, it's all fine. Then I try to drag one of these clips into the timeline below. It pops up with the usual notice about resolutions and things, when I click either yes or no to this, while Vegas appears to be working perfectly, and error message comes up saying that Vegas has stopped working. I have no idea what's causing this. I haven't found any similar cases on the interwebz, and it used to work fine. I downloaded K-Lite mega codec pack to see if that would help, but it didn't. I'm really annoyed, because this is delaying my YouTube video production. Any thoughts? bchampion96

Hi there! I'm looking to build a small form factor media pc for 300PLN (100$), that could handle 720p video. I already have a dvd drive, a hdd and a Geforce fx5200 graphics card. Can I use such a card? I don't really know much about building small pc's, so if someone would be so nice and could list some parts for me i would be greatfull. Edit: I'll be using ubuntu if that changes anything.

Post at /. Source for image. Great. Hmm, I wonder if there will be a browser coming out in the near future (or may be already out) that won't have this implemented in some shape or form, but also works with most websites. We'll see. I personally don't like it. We just keep going over it, but DRM is a losing proposition for both parties. How many times are they gonna try crap like this? It doesn't stop pirates. It never really does. It only makes their process of getting content slightly more annoying. I think this is a sign of things to come: Open Source Browsers. Are there any? I mean, I know some are technically that way with extensions, but still. ... I already have a name for it: Google Ultron Interesting comments on Slashdot: What do you guys think of this idea of DRM in the webspace?

I am looking to build a NAS instead of buying an off the shelf NAS as i want the flexibility of expanding, upgrading and choosing different OS. The primary purpose is to have as low of a power consumption as possible for a DIY Nas. I have some parts picked out, but would like opinions or suggestions on other parts that could fit my bill and purpose. My budget is about $300 for just the system without drives. 1)Zotac H87ITX A E 2)Intel Pentium G3220 (intel Specs page)(thinking of under clocking or getting the G3220T) 3)Single 8GB(probably kingston, taking a risk with redundancy here and planning to upgrade in future) 4)hard drives will decide once i have a nas build. 5)OS-either FreeNAS or synology DSM These are the main parts that I am considering. What i have is deciding on a good casing and power supply. Looking at a proper NAS casing that has hot swappable drives or a bitfenix prodigy So if you have a suggestion or recommendation for a case or power supply, or think there is a better board or CPU, let me know. I hope i can document the entire process for anyone who wants to build a similarly lower power consumption NAS

So I'm looking for a new solution for backup and streaming media. I was debating between a NAS, or building an ultra-low powered home server. I'm leaning more towards the home server side. The thing is, I don't even know what to look for in building a home server. It's going to be used to back up the 3-5 computers that are currently/are going to be in the house, and I want to get it to run as low powered as possible so it's basically invisible on the power bill. Other than a backup, it's mostly going to be used to stream media over the network. So a few questions, Do I need a highly expensive raid card for a very basic raid 5 to be functional? Looking for something like 3 or 4 4TB WD reds or greens. Ultra low powered, Haswell 4130T? What specs should I be concerned about in a home server? Does it need to be powerful, or is it fine with ~2-4GB of ram and an undervolted dual core? Thanks in advance for any help, I've build plenty of desktop gaming PCs and things of that, but I've never really gotten into the server side of things.

Hello and ok here is my plan, I have an old lol Gateway LX-6810 and it has been great for school but has just been kinda sitting around and I love the front 2 expansion bays. I want to upgrade this system for living room use and some gaming also going to be watching movies on it. This is what I already have in the system Monitors: 2x Asus VE245 1080p at 75hz TV: Sony HD 1080p at 60hz GateWay LX-6810 Stock Mobo Intel core 2 Quad Q8400 2.6Ghz water cooled w/Corsair H80i 8gb G.Skill DDR2 8500, 1066 XFX DD HD Radeon 6870 1gb LG/blu-ray Drive Crucial M4 128ssd boot drive WD blue 320gb 7200rpm pictures, notes, things Segate 320gb 7200rpm Downloads, zip files Segate 600gb 7200rpm games WD blue 1tb 7200rpm movies PS3 wired controller Xbox 360 HD DVD drive xbox 360 wireless adaptor logitech S510 keyboard logitech M510 mouse This system plays all my games now at high settings at 50 - 60fps because my HD TV is set at 60hz so I don't really know how to check if I get more FPS? when I run Fraps it just stays at 60fps and only Crysis 3 makes it dip down to 28 from time to time but it doesn't stay there long and it doesn't hurt the game any? OK I want to upgrade this with a Nvidia GPU but I love this Amd Radeon and how it's working I run all 3 monitors at the same time with my Sony being the middle monitor and the one I game on. This system came originally with an GTX 120 and it has an Nvidia chipset on the mobo so thought maybe it would work better with an Nvidia Card? Anyway back to this media / gaming pc to take over my console in the living room? I have found on ebay some nice QX9650 cpus for under or around a 100 dollars, and I just found an QX9770 ES for 150. I know I have a stock mobo which Gateway says that any LGA 775 socket cpu will fit but,??? my mobo has a FSB of 1333 and the QX9770 is at 1600. So was wondering if that would be an issue. I also found an HD 6970 for around a 100 dollars locally in town, but what type of Nvidia GPU would be around or better in performance for around 200 dollars? Also, I'm looking at only trying to spend as much as a new console would cost, I have a ps3 and a 360 but with the news of the next consoles on the way I started looking into upgrading my PC. I already see the difference in PC gaming since I bought Diablo 3 and bought Gears of war on PC it blow away my Gears of war Judgement and the original Gears of War on the 360. So I bought more games, and made a steam account and an origin account lol. I'm stuck in SWTOR loving that game!!!! Also I am loving playing games that I already played and beat on my consoles on the PC they look so so so so much more interesting and just overall better. OK so let me know what you guys think? it's just an upgrade I don't see why I should scrap this PC when it's doing everything already? I know with the budget I'm going to say people will say just build a new PC, But I will be building An extreme PC some time next year. So with that in mind Budget around: Xbox one is 500 dollars plus another controller 70 dollars and a game is 70 dollars? upgrade budget $800 lets really try to do it with $400? Thanks

As we all know, you could think you have the PERFECT PC, spend all the money in the world on it, but one small error along the way can completely ruin it for your use case. So what is the worst build vs. use case mismatch you have ever encountered? I ask because I've recently found out about two mate's builds which are decent specced machines, but completely wrong for what they wanted. 1 - Bought a 2 grand gaming laptop, never moves it, runs it to a monitor and plugs in all Razer gaming peripherals. That thing gets hot (I mean physically too hot to touch) and gets a fraction of the performance of what a desktop could've got on that budget. It is gathering dust ffs! 2 - Wanted to build (and I quote) "the ultimate LAN party rig" ... bought an Obsidian 800D *ultimate facepalm* I try not to be too judgmental of smaller thing, like buying 2400MHz RAM for a gaming PC or putting case fans on a radiator, but these two are beyond the pale, in my opinion. So what is the worst use case failure you've ever encountered? I'm genuinely interested to know how often this sort of thing happens, regardless of how awesome or terrible the build itself may have been. Do we think it's down to a fundamental lack of understanding of tech among 90% of people (given that most people don't ever study it properly), fanboyism over certain brands (no names mentioned ) or something else?

So once im finished my new build & use the leftover parts to setup my brothers build i wanted to get a home server going. This is partially inspired by the Black Dwarf so ill definately be making my own enclosure. Probally be 2014 before i proceed with anything, im just getting some ideas to ponder on. I have no defined budget but i want it to do what it needs to do well, efficiently and quietly while spending as little as possibe. I have no hardware set in stone as i have no experience with low end server type parts. Things it will do: -It will hold all our Photos & movies in one central location to be viewed on the TV or streamed to other computers on demand. -Will run backups for 2 PC's & a laptop. -It will basically be running 24/7 so for dad to allow it to exist it MUST be low power consumption! -It will have a raid 5 array with 4x2TB drives to start. -The most strain on it i can imagine is watching a movie & streaming another 2 at the same time. -Youtube & general web browsing are most likely with a possible chance of minecraft type games. -Be silent!!! -Will install the OS on a 60GB Vertex 3 I'll soon have spare. Questions: -Getting a raid card, never had one, what should I look for in one? or will onboard raid be good enough? Will start with 4 drives, later 6 drives, 8 would be the max. -Are you able to add new drives without re-formatting the whole array later down the track? -I have a spare 2TB barracuda i'll use but i've not decided what new drives to buy, WD Reds or Greens. -Would Caching the array be of any real benefit? -Will Windows 8 be fine or would windows home server be a better option(never experienced it) -What platform should i use for low power consumption but not be terrible when someone wants to use it? FM2 APU be a good idea? 1155 i3 3220T? any i3 cpu's coming for 1150? are atom boards just tooo low end? I plan to mount the HDD in a way so the aluminium case acts as a heat sink to aid in cooling and help keep the fans quiet. If its got a good APU I think i'll make it Mini itx. If not ill go micro so i can add a basic gpu if we end up needing it. This is just me venting my idea and getting my feelers out, any input is welcome

Hey guys, i am searching for an alternative to organize my music on my PC and smartphone. I recently finished my gaming PC build, which is now my main Computer, after using my laptop for 2 years as my main driver. Back then i had an iPhone and i used iTunes to organize my music and sync it to my phone. I sorted my music in many many playlists as opposed to just import whole albums so i have put much work into my library. Later i switched to a Nexus 4 and kept syncing my music over iTunes via an app called iSyncr. The reason why i did this, is obviously the amount of organizing work I've put into my iTunes already and the fact that iTunes was a program to flawlessly sync my playlists to my phone without messing up the order of the songs or anything like that. Now with my new gaming PC i decided to finally cut off the last apple dependency and switch to a new media player. Honestly i don't know what to pick because there are just so many! Here are some points that i am looking for in a media player: - Easy creating and managing songs in playlists -sync the playlists flawlessly to a smartphone (!) -import my exisiting iTunes library (optional) -being overall appealing and nice to use If you have read all of this so far i really appreciate it and i would be glad if someone has similar issues and needs for a media player or maybe has experienced/used a media player the way i want to use it and give me some advice. ;)

Hello guys, I would really like a small PC, by small I mean Zotac Zbox small and my overall budget is about 300€, you can also recommend a bit larger mini itx system. Currently I'm looking at the MA320 and with RAM and a SSD it would cost about 210€ I would mainly be using the PC to stream videos, surf the web and if the PC is powerful enough some light gaming. Since I'm going to use the PC with a TV, digital audio out and HDMI is a must, if it isn't a part of your build calculate another 20€ for an external digital output. cheers

Hey people of Linustechtips.com I am new to the forum and English is not my first language so please forgive me for any grammar or spelling mistakes I might make. I have a question for all of you techpeeps that are willing to help me. I recently switched from console gaming to PC gaming. My xbox 360 died while we were moving and thanks to the insurance I got about 700 bucks back. I don't really know what happened but my uncle is a lawyer and he said he would take care of it. With that money I purchased a MSI GP602PE leopard since I travel a lot between college and my home-town. I have falling in love with pc gaming but the laptop is not the ideal solution at home for me because I have a big beautiful 27 inch AOC monitor that I rarely use with it because I would need to hook up an external keyboard, while I love the keyboard my laptop has. But I am talking too much and I will skip to the question. I am looking into getting a "small" desktop for media consumption and gaming at home. My budget is around 650 to 700 euros. My eye has fallen on the zotac Zbox EN760, it has an i5, 560 m and requires you to install the ram memory, a hard drive and an os yourself. Now I would like to know if this is a good option for me and what sort of RAM and harddrive or ssd I should install. Many thanks for reading this and I hope to hear from you. Mike

Been thinking of the next build after i finish upgrading my main rig. This will a be mini itx system, intel 4670 for the cpu and the possibilty to wack a dedicated gpu in if i wanted to later on do the line. It would have to be super quite therefore no dedicated gpu. Small as possible yet still keeping the ability to upgrade and have decent spec. Its main use would be as a general media pc, watching HD 1080p films, general web browsing and finally steam in home streaming. It would be connected up to my server for storage.

Hey, I am wanting to convert my cupboard, into a sort of server rack, and need to know if the following is possible. I am new to this but I am planning on having a few separate machines, download server, backup server and media server, they will all be connected to a gigabit home network. I was wanting to build a HTPC next to my TV, and have that read files from my Media Server. Now my questions are. Does this all sound possible ? Can Plex index files located on another machine within the same network ? Any better alternatives to Plex ? or is Plex ok for what I am looking to do ? Can anyone suggest a good LCD display for the case ? preferably with a remote. Sorry if I have confused anyone, or I am asking stupid questions.

Hey guys, I myself am in the market for a tablet. I was looking at a lot of options (no-name, cheap vs. expensive, Apple vs. Google,...9 I came across a lot of helpful information on this forum but I felt like I need to make this as a guide to everyone looking for a tablet. (Something like the New Build Plan and things like that) Lets breake the basics down: Why do you need a tablet? (Media cosumption, work on the go, gaming,.. etc.) If you need a tablet for media consumption a lot of people are saying to go with the Samsung Google Nexus 10 for the front facing speakers or maybe you want to go with the Apple iPad Air because of the tight Apple ecosystem. Both of them will get the latest software updates so you won't be stuck with old software. How much money do you plan on spending? (100 $, 200$, and so on, ...) If budget is your main consern than think about going with a Amazon Kindle Fire (If you can get it) or a Asus Google Nexus 7 2013. The Nexus 7 will get the latest software update and it won't brake the bank. Do you want a good App store? (Apple or Android) or do you want to use full .exe programs (Windows 8.1 tablets) or maybe even Windows RT It is pretty self explanitory if you bought a lot of apps on the Google Play Store then you should go with an Android based tablet, same goes with every other platform. Do you want (good) accessoriesfor your tablet? (Keyboards, fancy cases, and things like that) If you do than Apple is your choice. You can get really premium high quality accessories for the iPad Air or the iPad Mini or the iPad Mini w/ Retina Display Do you want to be able to run the latest software? (Android 4.4.2 KitKat or iOS 7.0.4 or Windows 8.1) ) Then you should either go with the Nexus line up or the Google Play Editions for Android, and anything from the iPad 2 and up can run the latest iOS so you are fine. Windows is compilcated. Do you need to get some work done on the go? If you need to make a PowerPoint Presentation or a Word document nd you don't want to deal with any thid party apps then go with a Windows tablet. They usually come with Office 2013. Hope this helps. Post your thoughts and suggestions below.

Given Steams incredibly strong community support, with green light and workshop, the recent news of them moving into music platforming has made me think of a cool possibility. Eventually, they will become a digital music platform where we buy music. It's inevitable. But will they provide a similar community service it has, for music creators? As in, user created songs. They can be voted by the community and they rate the best ones, which then goes through a similar greenlight process. We have a living room media player steam box. Which can play music in big picture mode while you play games or just listed to the song. Make a quick rating, It gets passed to be sold on steam. And you cant find this song anywhere else, so it's a bigger incentive to vote and eventually purchase. When it passes, it sells on steam. Music writer and steam both win. And you get a new song. So i think this is going to be a possibility of seeing a community driven music hub. What do you guys think? Too far fetche'd? If I posted in the wrong sub-forum. Please let me know.

Hi, i'm planning to make a simple media pc. 1. Budget I'm looking to spend somewhere around 700$-1200$ (US) ~ 500€-900€ (Euro) 2. Aim The sole purpose of this build is a media pc that is hooked up to my tv. I'll be running plex media server on this pc to stream to additional devices in the house (iPhone, iPad, game pc, laptops, etc..). I won't be doing any gaming on this pc as it's just to playback all my media. Also as this pc will be running 24/7, I think power efficiency is a big factor here. 3. Components I'm looking for a case that supports at least 4 HDD's as I have a lot of external HDD at the moment that I plan to remove from their enclosure and insert in this pc. (Silverstone, fractal design?) Intel i3/i5 or AMD APU (A6-A8)? windows 7 or windows 8.1 or linux? boxed cpu cooler? power supply 400-500W? ram 4gb? Don't need extra HDD's or a SSD (I have a crucial M4 128GB lying around) 3. Peripherals I've been looking at those logitech keyboard/mouse all-in-one solutions so you don't need an additional mouse (K400, TK820) 4. Future Maybe keep the option open to play 4K video
