Context: So I got myself a mechanical keyboard (Kinesis Edge, modded to make it hot swappable) with cherry MX browns and, while I love the feel and sound, there is absolutely horrible spring ping and I've tried everything from foam to a desk pad to lubing the switches and nothing seems to work. It is driving me nuts! I think I've isolated it to the springs in the switches when I release the key. ("Ping" is the correct term here, right?). I have read every article and post I can find and tried everything that was recommended. The keyboard is hot swappable, so I was wondering: would simply getting different switches be a potential solution? If so, any recommendations for something similar to a cherry MX brown?

I really wanted to get the System76's Launch keyboard, but it's unreasonably expensive as someone who lives at the hat of America. Is there an alternative that is Fully customizable on Linux Reasonably priced Macro keys (preferable) Can save settings to firmware (preferable) multiple profiles wireless option (optional) Also, I'm looking for one that's the same requirements as above, but also: low profile wireless with 2.4GHz dongle 65-75% bluetooth option lightweight Has to be compact as I'm planning on making this my Steam Deck's keyboard that I can bring with me.

I've gone through 2 "prebuilt" mechanical keyboards and both of them sucked, one's D key didn't work and this current one just sometimes doesn't work. Because the layout i use is very rare i cannot find any more "pre-built" ones, so i thought i'd try to build my own. I have a budget of 150-200 euro (money i'll get from refunding this one), so please link me some videos and information on how to build my own mech. keyboard.

Keycaps: PBT keycap, options of double shot or dye-sub PBT plastic Screen: attached by magnet, displays time, connection, battery, number lock in default, support to upload the gif images Hot swappable: Yes, kailh socket Connection: 3 modes with Bluetooth 5.0, 2.4ghz and wired(type-c) Battery: 8000mAh with 2 batteries inside Encoder: Solid aluminium alloy knob, the same specs as the one of NJ80 Instruction: tray mount Foams: beneath plate and switch, bottom foam. Switch options: Gateron Pro(yellow, brown), BOX Ice Cream Pro(strawberry, blueberry and taro), BOX deep sea -islet Plate option: steel and brass Feet: with 1 adjustable angle feet only RGB: south-facing RGB, customizable light effects Case: ABS plastic in solid black Pre-built slot for 2.4ghz dongle in the back I received the package in excellent condition; it was packed securely inside thick bubble wrap. I opted for dark version with the steel plate and gateron yellows. Coming with a solid black case, the keyboard itself feels solid with minimal flex. It is slightly heavy, weighing around 1.6kg.The typing experience is smooth when out of box, without hollowness or unwanted noise. The 3-layer foams seem to play a significant role in reducing typing noise. I am pleased with the typing feel and sound. The mini screen is a useful addition, displaying the time, connecting mode, and battery status by default, can upload gif images as well.Additionally, the screen has a calculator function, accessible by pressing FN+upright enter. This feature is particularly handy for those who frequently need to use a calculator. However, it would be even better if the screen could display additional information like CPU and RAM status. The keycap quality is good, and I particularly enjoy the side-lit features. The RGB lighting looks impressive when activated. Setting up the RGB can be easily done through their software, which also allows downloading shared RGB profiles from other users. The wireless connections are smooth and reliable, with the 2.4g mode being my preferred choice due to its stability. The software is user-friendly and enables easy remapping of all keys in the first or FN layer. Moreover, the FN key can be remapped to change the FN shortcuts, making it a great feature for users who rely on FN shortcuts. Overall, I am quite satisfied with the keyboard's performance and features.

Basically, my keyboard stops working after waking from sleep or when I switch it to USB mode. I use my royal kludge rk71 in Bluetooth mode and on a fresh restart, it works without any issues. If I put my computer to sleep, on the next wake my keyboard stops working. Interestingly, if at this point I connect this keyboard via a USB cable, it still won't work. Also if I connect the keyboard to the USB cable, the keyboard becomes unresponsive and doesn't work anymore even after switching to Bluetooth mode. It also becomes unresponsive if the keyboard is kept idle for many hours. The only thing that I've found to fix it is a restart. I've tried several things, listing them from memory here: 1. Reinstalled drivers 2. Tried updating drivers but all shows driver is updated. 3. Disabled "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in device manager for all USB controllers and HID devices, as well as Intel Wireless Bluetooth. 4. I'm on the latest drivers from Intel, AMD, and Windows Update 5. Disabled USB Selective Suspend in Power Options for USB and PCIe. 6. Ran troubleshooters for Bluetooth, power and keyboard but nothing found. 7. Stopped, Started, Restarted Bluetooth Support Service in services.msc 8. Set Bluetooth Support Service to trigger Automatically and configured the Logon setting to use Local Service. 9. Tried turning off and on both the keyboard and the Bluetooth. 10. Paired the device once again. The Bluetooth settings shows that the device is connected but none of the keys I press seems to work on the laptop. The laptop specs: Asus Vivobook S15 Intel Core i5 8265U 16GB DDR4 RAM, NVIDIA MX150 GPU. I'm also including some additional setups in case if any of them comes to of use. I have an LG 24 inch monitor connected to the laptop via an HDMI. A USB C hub connected to the laptop with the keyboard usb cable and a LAN cable. I also have a logitech k380 bluetooth keyboard that I use on my Dell lattitude 5320 which never seemed to create any problem so far. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Hi community, i am looking for a budget mechanical keyboard and at the moment i got my eyes on cooler master ck530 v2. It used TTC switch which i think its a downgrade from the original Gateron version but i don't think its not really an issue within the price range and its a full RGB and comes with a wrist wrest so not so bad i guess. Do you have a better recommendation?

Hey all. I just build my first PC with the help of people on this forum. I am now looking for a mechanical keyboard. I am currently using a friend's Corsair K95 Platinum with MX Cherry Brown switches. I love the sound and feel of the switches, however the size of the keyboard doesn't work for me. It is a full size keyboard. I am constantly mistyping on this keyboard because the key locations are slightly shifted from where I am used to them being on my laptop keyboard. After googling around I'm pretty sure I'm looking for an 1800 size keyboard. I absolutely LOVE the size and layout of my laptop keyboard (ROG GU501GM photo attached). It is 13.5 inches across, with at typing area (caps lock to enter) of 10.9 inches. The specific things I like about it revolve around the numpad: the large enter key, large zero key, and arrow keys that don't overlap with the numpad. I am looking for a keyboard that has all, or most of these features. I will list features in order of importance below. Essential: Size similar to my laptop keyboard. Large enter key on numpad. Keys light up so I can see them in the dark. F key row. Really really want: Large zero key on numpad. Arrows keys don't overlap with numpad. MX Cherry Brown or similar switches. Would be cool to have but not essential: Volume controls. Cool RGB effects. Wired, not wireless. I haven't been able to find anything that has all the features I am looking for. My budget is around $100, but I am willing to go up to $150 if it is a keyboard with everything I am looking for. I would prefer to not build my own keyboard, but if it helps keep it within my budget, I am willing to do so. Thanks for reading!

Over a year ago I paid way too much for a keyboard. Corsair k68. I should've bough a Cooler Master that was a quarter of the price of a K68 instead, but I thought well all the reviews say this keyboard is great, let's treat myself. First I find out that the switches are soldered in and aren't swapable, bummer. But worse than that, after 6 months of use the key caps start to randomly jump up making me lose confidence pressing keys when typing or playing games or doing anything, very frustrating. after 8 months, The right Ctrl key just broke. The plastic on the base just flat out broke and the key fell out. Tried to find key cap replacements, those things are cheap, right? Well they are but not for this keyboard which has longer Ctrl keys that the majority of key caps out there do not fit for. The ones Corsair is selling are way way more expensive than OEM key caps here. I could buy that Cooler Master Mechanical instead of buying a set of stupid keycaps that fit this keyboard for the same price. And now, the second Ctrl key just broke down the exact same way. Corsair says the warranty doesn't cover this because it fall under " wear and tear accosiated with normal use". How could this be when my previous mechanical keyboard, which was a no brand chinese mechanical, had a metal top and worked great for 2 years and even then I gave it away to a family member and still working. Screw this and screw them. This will definitely be my last Corsair purchase.

Since optical mechanical keyboards don't have the metal leaves inside them to complete the circuit on contact, are they prone to fail less? do they experience no key chatter and when they fail, they fail completely? I'm pretty sick of key chatter and I'm looking into optical mechanical keyboards. What do experienced users have to say?
-
I had bought a Redragon k552 with outemu blue switches a long time ago. It started chattering and was pretty unusable after a point. After a while I ordered Gateron reds from KBDfans and got all the outemu switches replaced. The Gateron reds started chattering too after a few short months. Membrane keyboards don't really match the mechanical feel and I have been spending more time on the computer, thus I felt the desire to get a Keychron keyboard. However, I'm really sick of exeriencing keyboard chatter. Some enthusiasts or lucky people have pointed out that they have had various mechanical keyboards but never experienced chattering. I'm confused with the feedback. So will an expensive obscure brand work chatter free for years? I'm not sure what other specific question I should think of either. I would love to own a mech keyboard again, but I'm very concerned about chatter and key issues.
-
When any of my blue switch keys start having key chatter, I apply a few drops of isopropyl alcohol and then press and blow into the switches. This usually removes the key chatter. For example, today I had key chatter on my W key so I did the usual steps and it got fixed, however, a few hours later my D key started having key chatter so I did the usual steps to remove key chatter and it got removed but after about 30 mins, the D key lost its click. I tried the usual key chatter removal steps again and the isopropyl alcohol temporarily restored its click but then the click got lost again after about 20 mins. What happened? And what can I do to restore the blue switch click without desoldering? 20221026_190134_1.mp4

Hey LTT Forums, I recently got a used Lenovo ThinkPad X280 laptop chosen for it's lightweight small size, allowing it to take minimal space in a bag. However, as much as I love the ThinkPad TrackPoint keyboard, I would much prefer a small 60% or 65% Mechanical Keyboard to throw in my bag and get a better typing experience when I have the space. I've been looking at something like the Corsair K65 RGB MINI, but I know this forum has a lot of passionate mechanical keyboard fans, and wanted to see if anyone had feedback as to what they would personally recommend! Wireless is obviously a perk when looking for portability but like, it's not something I'm picky about lol. I had considered putting this on the Mechanical Keyboards thread with 300 something pages but I have had bad experiences with those types of threads on other forums where every post is essentially buried and lost to time. Thanks, hope I get some good advice aha. - Madison

I'm looking for a keyboard to replace my old Steelseries Apex 350. As a keyboard to use for both typing and gaming I have really enjoyed it but its now a solid 5 years old and keys are starting to become a bit sticky and its just generally a bit of a nightmare to use as it has constant disconnection issues forcing me to completely reconnect the keyboard which is far from ideal. Recently came across a cheap Corsair K100 (with OPX switches) so i bought it and tried it but didn't really enjoy using it much, found the keys were just generally too tall feeling and I hated how light the actuation force was and it was causing me to type all over the place and not enjoy gaming as much. Was thinking something low profile, since the apex 350 is fairly low profile, maybe along the lines of Logitech G915 but still concerned that it will be too light as with my K100. Idealy the keyboard would also have volume + media controls, and at least a few programmable macro keys (like dedicated quick keys for discord mute and deafen) Not massively bothered about it being a mechanical keyboard as I really liked my membrane keyboard despite it's other issues. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Hello there, It's been a couple months since I've purchased the tech in my current setup, and I'm looking for cleaning and repair kits to keep my stuff staying nice. So far I've been using monitor cleaning kits to keep my laptop's screen and my external monitor's screen clean, though I find it hard to clean all the nooks and crannies in between the switches of my mechanical keyboard, and in the ports that have been sitting vacant for so long. I remember LTT sponsoring iFixit, and I'm lead to believe they're kits should be pretty good. If they are, then my problem would be which kit to get. I'll say that I have a Dell XPS 17 9700, and I know it takes a couple screws and nice wedge to get into my laptop, so maybe someone would know which kit is right for maintaining my laptop. In addition, some of the ports in my Dell Docking Station - HDMI, DisplayPort, maybe some USB-A - have been setting open to the dust and air, as well as the SD-card slot and some thunderbolt ports in my XPS. Otherwise, I want to dive back to mechanical keyboards. I use a Razer Type Pro (104 keys) with Razer's Orange key switches. This is my first mechanical keyboard, and I love it. I kind of played around with some keyboards at my local Best Buys, and I really liked the feel of the Razer switches and keycaps on my Type Pro. I've heard that Razer's Orange switches - like the ones in my keyboard - are equivalent to a Cherry Mx-brown, which I also hear is sort of a benchmark for mechanical key switches - though if I'm wrong, please let me know, lol. I've been intrigued to play around and switch key switches, and probably key caps, too. And, so, do any of you also know if I'll be able to swap my key switches on my keyboard, and if so, what do you recommend I try, considering I really like the Razer Orange switches on my board.

I just found the Glove80, a wireless+ergonomic gaming keyboard and thought there'd probably be other people here who found it cool. The people behind it seem to have done some pretty thorough R&D, so I think it could be neat for Short Circuit to cover it (James is really enthusiastic about these things). IIUC, the left half can be used independently, so it could also be used as a macro-/game-pad with more space for the mouse on the right (I use a simpler split keyboard, and being able to put the right half away when gaming is amazing!). There's also GPIO, ZMK firmware, and a "solder your own switches"-option; seems really nice for tinkering with? And of course it comes with the RGB goodness we all love ^^ What do y'all think? : )

Hello. I'm a new user who was recommended this site to help get advice, so sorry if my post is a little to vague. Anyways, I'm here to ask any keyboard brand and specific keyboard recommendations from more experienced people. From greatest to least important things I'm looking for a keyboard: build quality, keypad less or smaller size, color design of keyboard, layout, extra features such as caps lock light and windows lock, switches(just looking for linear, doesn't matter which ones), and rgb. Generally speaking, the thing that matches all what I've been seeking have been the Leopold keyboards. So I was wondering if it is a brand worth buying. The reviews make it sound like a great typing keyboard and has the sound I like to hear out of a mechanical keyboard.

Hi and thank you for clicking on my post. I am new to mechanical keyboards and i want to buy my first one. My budget is 100$ max and i would like a full-size with rgb (i like the wave pattern) and red/linear switches. So far i found Lenovo Legion K500 to be a decent option for 58$, MSI VIGOR GK50 for 79$ or a Redragon equivalent. (In EU) I would really appreciate your input because i want gouge my eyes out from how many options there are.

Hello everyone. For information, I use modded (tape mod, Neoprene foam between PCB and plate, and on bottom case) Varmilo VB87 with lubed and filmed Gateron yellow switches. I use it both and at home and work, so it gets transported a lot. I experience issue with double clicking/no click on some of the switches from time to time. When I soldered switches, first month or so was good and everything worked. After some time passed, one of the switches started to double click or no click at all. I switched it to a new one and the life became good again. After like a week or two weeks, another two switches started to malfunction. Yet again, I switched them to new switches. Right now, about like eight switches have the same issue. My question is, can a very light layer of lube on copper leaf or tiny dust, which may/ have entered inside switches cause this? If not, my only guess is that I just got a bad batch of switches.

Finally I joined this community... Hey guys and gals! So, let's get to the point, I have the Razer Blackwidow Lite that I use for office and gaming, and recently during my travels, I went real idiotic, and brought it with me, and lost a single keycap (the F7) as I left it in my suitcase. The keycap is definitely lost, so no hope to just "try and find that and stick it back again" I've looked around on Reddit and Amazon, and I've pretty much gotten a few of these sites: https://www.caseking.de/peripherie/eingabegeraete/tastaturen/keycaps https://www.maxkeyboard.com/black-translucent-cherry-mx-blank-keycap-set-for-esc-w-a-s-d-or-e-s-d-f-and-arrow-keys.html https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Keycap-Upgrade-Mechanical-Optical-Keyboards/dp/B07ZPRSWPZ?th=1 So, why I haven't contacted the sites I mentioned above, is because 1.) I only need one keycap, why should I get them all? And it's TKL 2.) Even if I did buy the Amazon one, it's unfortunately US/UK Layout, so I'm gonna lose my ÜÖÄ keycaps 3.) I'm also kinda afraid if I buy an individual one, it's gonna have a different height with the others, and just annoys me instead. 4.) MaxKeyboard would allow single ones, but then I have to pay for customs, which would make it a bit annoying, though not really unreasonable. I've even contacted Razer recently to ask for their support, and found this European site https://www.laptoptaste.de/ which supposedly sells individual keycaps (€3,3 Euros is a lot for a single keycap, but hey, sustainability, yo), and contacted them about my issue. Anyone else knows where I could get such individual keycaps? Or perhaps an "upgrade" to PBT, but DE-Layout? Thanks in advance!

Hey, Its my first time buying a mechanical keyboard EVER. I'm thinking about buying Redragon kurama k552 (87 keys) or k551 (104 keys) , but there's few things I need to know before buying a - any - mechanical keyboard. Where I live a $30 is roughly quarter of the salary XD ( and I don't have a fixed job ) so the highest I can go for is about $35 and will probably use it for few years before even consider to buy another, the reason I'm saying this maybe you guys think redragon keyboards is not made to last which is not a good thing or maybe there's a better options! Is all mechanical keyboards switches can be replaced with the tool ? (specially the models I mentioned if someone tried em)? Since I game A LOT I will probably consume the WASD + QWERF, CTRL, SPACE, SHIFT and TAB quicker than other keys, if they started to not register or to repeat ( I found a lot of people online saying this happens with some keys they frequently use) does changing the switches fix it or that means I need to replace the whole keyboard? Is there any things I should consider while buying the mechanical keyboard except the switches blue/brown/red? Is there anything I should avoid while using it, or things I should do? I had a dell membrane office keyboard that I bought used for $5 and it worked just fine for over year and half, I'm writing with it right now actually. I basically want a mechanical keyboard cuz I know it lasts longer, a membrane usually lasts about year or two with me, so I'm expecting a mech to last at least 6 years but I'm doubting it with the reviews I saw about the low-budget keyboards, some said their gaming keys specially WASD started to miss or repeat after few months. for the switches part, after I searched continuously for about 6 hours, I came to conclusion that cherry mx is the gold standard for mechs specially the brown one that combines both being quiet and tactile. But again thats only available in mid and high end ones It will be my first time using a mechanical keyboard so I know it will be a nice upgrade in the experience specially since I use my computer at least 8 hours a day. what I'm trying to determine here is if the low-end keyboards and by low end I mean $35 or less is a viable option or not but I have zero experience with it so I'm really confused and thinking about just buying another generic membrane Sorry for the long text and thank you in advance.

I would like to build a new mechancial keyboard my current keyboard is the corsair k70 mk2, with silvers. Im in the market for a new keyboard but the prices seem a little nuts to me. I would like to build a keyboard from the 150 - 200 canadian dollar range. I think I want my keyboard to have either gateron ink blacks or ink yellows, and a hotswap pcb would be preferable.

Anyone else having this issue? I'm just past 1 month after the manufacturer's 2 year warranty. The RGB LED for "P" switch has deteriorated and is now noticeably less bright compared to all the other LED's. I remember having this issue for the same LED switch within a year of purchase but at that time, it only persisted for a few days/weeks. I mostly have the LED's set on a static primary colour and just cycle through different ones on a per week basis so the defect is very noticeable for my use case. It also looks like the LED's on these are directly soldered into the PCB motherboard - https://www.techpowerup.com/review/corsair-k95-platinum/4.html Any recommendations on the best type of RGB LED to replace it with?

So I recently bought a Kemove Snowfox 60% board and for the most part, it's great. I love the RGB and the feel of the board even when stock and the fact that it's a hotswap board as well so I can mess around with the switches at will later down the road. The only problem I have with it is that the board has a bad tendency to disconnect mid-use and gets stuck on the last key I used before it spazzed out. It gets really annoying especially since I like using the board wirelessly and wired on the fly, and the problem occurs on both wired and wireless modes. I've scoured countless forums and the general consensus is that the board is notorious for the horrible software and the connectivity issues. It's a shame because it might just be a dealbreaker for me if I have to be turning the board off and on again at least once an hour (it's that bad). I had an Anne Pro 2 and I was almost thinking about getting that one in another switch type because the software was just phenomenal by comparison and the battery life was stable and didn't give me the issues the Snowfox does. But I don't want to go back to the AP2 because it's soldered board and I want the freedom to be able to change the switches at will. Considering the diverse amount of people who know about peripherals, are there any alternatives to the Kemove that you guys recommend, that can be used in both wired and wireless mode, has RGB and is in a 60% form factor, AND is hotswappable?
