My computer has been fucked for 4 days. I have work to do. And I'm done with trying basics. I'll wait for replies, so I'm relying on you. Please help me. 1.I want to install windows 10 on my formatted 256 GB SSD. ;( 2. What is MBR partition table? I only know about NTFS and thats what I put. 3. EFI refers to UEFI? 4. What is a GPT disk? ''windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems can only be installed on GPI disks'' I once again: deleted the partition of the SSD. and I created a full single NTFS partition. Still same problem. Also, wtf is load driver for?

Hi, i'm planning to buy a new HDD(this SATA 2 one is really slow in read speeds because of heavy usage), and my motherboard is Gigabyte B85m D3H. As it supports UEFI i'm thinking of installing Windows 10 with GPT partition scheme. What's the main difference between GPT and MBR. What are the performance differences between these two. Would you recommend WD or Toshiba HDDs (1TB) Thank you

Ok i built a computer for my brother a coupple of months ago, in January, and i recently just did a check up to see if everything was fine, and no it wasent at all. The main problem is that his 1TB SSHD dosent show up in the file explorer and is configured as a MBR drive. I have not got even the slightest clue on how this hapaned but it did and so i looked up a fix for it, you had to do some stuff in the BIOS with some comands and it didnt seem to hard, BUT when i try getting into the BIOS i cant, i press delete or F2 and spam them all throughout the boot but it still dosent do it for some reson, he is useing my old ASRock motherboard(cant remember the name) and i had no problems like that with it so i dont know what to do here, is there maby a way to get it to force start into the BIOS with some CMD magic or something like that, or should i remove the drive, plug it into my computer and do the reformating from it? im not sure what to do so some help would be great, thanks for any replied and any help

Hi, I am trying to install Windows 7 in UEFI and GPT since my laptop came in Legacy and MBR. But I have tryed from the dvd mi pc brought, a dvd I burned from a downloaded ISO and a boot usb I made with Rufus and ser to UEFI GPT. But my screan freezes when windows is starting (image attached) I can install windows 10 in UEFI and GPT but it wont activate since I have to format mi disk because to upgrade from windows 7 mi disk was in MBR. And after contacting Microsoft they dond activate mi windows 10. The only way I was able to install Windows 7 is setting BIOS to EUFI and enable Load Legacy Option Rom o dirextly set all BIOS to Legacy. How can I install windows 7 with only UEFI (nlt legacy option rom) and GPT so when I upgrade to windows 10 I have it in UEFI and GPT? Thabk you

Hello, So I've finished building my new pc and i noticed that windows only uses ~2.2 tb of storage , with the rest of my 3tb seagate barracuda being "unallocated". I know this is because my drive is an MBR drive and that i have to convert it to GPT in order for it to be all available , but i cant do it : that option is grayed out in the disk management utility and the command prompt refuses to do it .I've also tried formating it will reinstalling windows but i cant do that either . BTW this is my only drive ( os + files ). Any ideas ? Thank you for any answers.

Guys, I had to install Ubuntu on my system due to project work. So had thought of dual booting Windows 7+ubuntu. But after several tries i was not able to create a partition for ubuntu and also the partition i created via Windows disk management tool. that Partition was also not visible and i was not able to install ubuntu. Luckily i Had spare 500gb HDD lying around and i installed ubuntu on that system and now when i boot my pc.. it directly goes into windows and not into ubuntu MBR i.e GRUB(i guess after reading several articles over internet). My main Question is now how can i make my PC's boot loader to recognize that there are 2 OS in the system and and to give me the option to select 1 on every bootup. Please help me over here....

Up until today I've been using a 1TB Seagate Barracuda HDD as my storage for all my programs, games and OS. Today I bought and SSD to try and get that wonderful speed boost everyone talks about. I got the Samsung 850 EVO 250GB. So I plugged in the SATA and power cable and booted normally so I could migrate everything. I did that. I had to delete about 40GB of stuff to make it fit onto the SSD. So I did the migration. It told me it worked then it shut down my computer, I signed in and it showed the OS was now on the SSD and that all the files and what not had copied over. The HDD still had all the original stuff on it so I clicked format to erase it and when it finished it shut down my computer. Then I went into the boot order in the BIOS and moved the SSD forward and now I just get "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key... This happens when i put the SSD first. I'm confused as to why in the boot order there are 4 things even though I only have 2 drives. There is, Windows Boot Manager (P2:ST1000DM00: Windows Boot Manager (P4: Samsung SSD , P2: ST1000DM003-1ER162 and finally P4: Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB. When I booted off the Seagate it seemed to take me to log into Windows 8.1 screen where I type in the password. It had my Microsoft email but it wasn't using the Windows theme I had selected when it was booting properly. When I typed in my password it just got stuck on "Preparing Windows". I am so confused as to why it isn't booting correctly... I have the original installation media on a USB. Any suggestions?

So I recently did a bit of search about UEFI and its advantages (faster boot times, more secure, etc). I also learned that my Motherboard (Asus P8 Z77 V-PRO) does support UEFI but my Windows 8.1 is installed with Legacy BIOS I have a custom built rig with an SSD as a boot drive and an HDD for mass Storage I would like to know if there is a way to change my Windows installation to UEFI to take advantage of the extra features (preferably without erasing the whole drive). I would also like to know how to turn my partition to GPT from MBR in the process Also please let me know your personal experience

Ok so here's the situation. I have windows 7 ultimate installed. I recently put a hard drive in from another computer. That had vista. First time boot. My computer booted to my default drive I have it set to. (Windows 7) Upon rebooting. My computer started booting from the vista drive. I removed the vista drive. And attempted to boot from my default drive. But it just displays BOOTMBR missing after POST. I tried using bootrec from windowsRE on a flashdrive. But still no result. I also tried using partition wizard from a flash drive and making the system reserve partition is active. Still no results. The thing is in windowsRE and when it searches for windows instilation to repair. It shows 7 and vista. Even when I don't have the vista drive in. But the 7 partition shows. But when I attempt to repair it. It says it's incompatible.

Hi, there, well, i guess i screwed it up again Lol, so, after trying Debian for a while i finally got the newest version and decided to get the full installation in a small partition (About 5Gb) just to practice but, there were some faulty things during the install ( i couldn't specify my ethernet driver and failed to get the mirror) but that was completely screwed up when i coludn't install the boot loader, both options failed and i ended up finishing the faulty installation thinking i could format the partition and just try it again later..........turns out my Laptop Beeps and says there are no bootable drives present, tried it 4 more times and i got the "missing OS" message, i can boot, but i need my windows bootable USB to do so. I have made some research since then, and i'm pretty that what i actually meesed up was the Master Boot Record so, i tried the Recover option but that asked me the admin password, i entered it and found that it's not actually the one i use for my user account so i'm not even able to use the "fixmbr" command. Well, what can i do? I'm perfectly able to get into Windows, i think that's a great advantage, so please give me some advice. Thanks.

Hi guys, I had 2 HDD's installed when I installed Windows, I detached and formatted one HDD to install the new SSD, however the System is not booting anymore Windows 7 (64bit). So I googled some problems and found out, that the bootsector from Windows 7 is always installed on the HDD/SSD which is plugged into the first SATA port on the Motherboard; so my bootsector (or whatever ?) got deleted from the second non-system HDD which the System HDD needed to boot up. Does anybody know how I can fix thix without a repair disc, because the "repair disk" on my USB stick (ISO to USB) doesn't support my System, even though it is exactly the same OS. WIN 7 ULT (64) I don't want to buy a new licence either because that wouldn't be fair -.- I have a spare laptop with Windows 7 up and running and my System HDD attached to my laptop via USB; can I fix this ? Or can I export all windows programms and user settings ? Huge thanks for taking some time !!

Hi there, I have WD 1 Tb, that when I installed Win 7 I made a partition of 200 Gb for the windows installation and the other partition for data, backup, etc. My question is, when I tried to install Win 8.1 didn't let me, said that the partition that I wanted to install wasn't GPT and for this reason I couldn't install. For my knowledge I have to erase all the partition of the disk to be able to install Win 8.1 right? Or do I have a way to only modify that partition with GPT and then install win 8.1 and preserve all the data on the second partition of data?

Ok so I'm thinking of reinstalling windows 8 on a GPT Disk rather than the MBR I'm using atm. Basically I want Fast Boot So my questions are: 1. Do I need to convert to a GPT Disk BEFORE I boot from the Win8 Disk? or Can I convert to GPT from the Install Disk? 2. If I disable CSM, Enable Secure Boot and Fast Boot, That's it? anything else I need to do? 3. If I later decide to dual boot with linux, Can I Disable Secure Boot/Enable CSM and Still Boot from that Windows GPT Disk (albeit without Fast Boot?) 4. Ghosting/Imaging Software, What would copy the GPT Security Keys and such? Is this even possible? Thanks.

How to: Format / Initialize a HDD larger then 2TB. This tutorial will show you how to Initialize and format a brand new HDD larger then 2TB If you have just installed the drive it will not show up on your computer yet. This is because the drive needs to be initialized and formatted first. If your HDD is already showing up as a 2TB drive then please use this tutorial Instead: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/94620-how-to-fix-3tb-hdd-showing-up-as-a-2tb-hdd/ Step 1: type "diskmgmt.msc" in the windows search bar and open the program, preferably by right-clicking and selecting "Run as administrator". Step 2: Once you opened the Disk Management it should immediately show you the "Initialize Disk" popup window. It is very important that you select "GPT (GUID Partition Table)". Press ok Step 3: Now that the drive is initialized we need to format the drive. Right click on the drive and select "New Simple Volume..." Step 4: Press next. Step 5: You can now set the partition size, this is set the the maximum size by default. Press next. Step 6: Use the drop-down menu If you want to change the drive letter. Press next Step 7: Next up you can fill in the drive name (Volume label) Press next. Step 8: Press finish. Victory: Your drive is now formatted and you can use the whole drive instead of just the 2TB. Please like this post if it was helpful. looney

How to Fix: 3TB+ HDD showing up as a 2TB HDD. I see a lot of people are having this problem so here is a guide on how to fix your 3/4TB drive. The problem is that your drive is initialized as MBR instead of GPT. This can be fixed easily but you will lose all your data on that drive. WARNING: You will lose all data on the HDD! Step 1: type "diskmgmt.msc" in the windows search bar and open the program, preferably by right-clicking and selecting "Run as administrator". Step 2: Once you opened the Disk Management, then right click on the blue part of your drive and select "Delete Volume..." WARNING: Don't continue to step 3 unless you are 100% sure that you have the right drive and that there is no important data left on it! Step 3: Select yes to clean the drive. Step 4: Now right click on the disk name on the left of the bar and select "Convert to GPT Disk" The conversion is now done, the next steps are only there for creating the partition. Step 5: Right click on the drive and select "New Simple Volume..." Step 6: Press next. Step 7: You can now set the partition size, this is set the the maximum size by default. Press next. Step 8: Use the drop-down menu If you want to change the drive letter. Press next Step 9: Next up you can fill in the drive name (Volume label) Press next. Step 10: Press finish. Victory: Your drive is now formatted and you can use the whole drive instead of just the 2TB. Please like this post if it was helpful. looney

So i need to convert my SSD from MBR to GPT, but i dont really want to reinstall yet again. So thoughts are backup Convert disk, restore. Question is, for any one that has done a GPT conversion. If you take partition images from a MBR disk can they be restored to a GPT disk? I was thinking of using some thing like Shadow protect. <http> </http> If any one has done this i would love to know what software you used? Basically i'll just reinstall if its going to be an issue but may as well try and just backup/restore.

I looked on Google to no avail for a relatively straightforward way of converting a drive from the Master Boot Record (MBR) partition table type to the GUID Partition Table (GPT) type in Linux. I also saw from some searching here that no one has started a topic for this particular instance, either. I ask this because I had this problem when using Ubuntu for a few days while I got my new 250GB Samsung EVO SSD and 4TB WD Red drives set up and saw that only half of my 4TB drive's capacity was seen. I checked at least three or four sites, and all of them used software terminal commands that, as a primarily Windows user, had trouble understanding and following, and even when using GParted in the GUI form i couldn't quite figure out how to 'align' the 4TB drive to 4K sectors. I ended up using an external enclosure to format and convert the drive to GPT using my Windows 8 laptop, which was significantly less painful to do via Disk Management. What I'm looking for is a straightforward and repeatable procedure on how to convert a drive's partition table from MBR to GPT in a Linux environment, preferably using a GUI-enabled utility. Detailed steps are a must, explanations would be greatly appreciated, and screenshots would go a long way; as they say, "a picture is worth a thousand words", because some people who aren't as familiar with Linux (like me) need some serious explaining. For reference, I was using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS at the time. My current platform, if it's any help, is an FX-8350 CPU and Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 motherboard.
