Hello LinusTechTips forum! I am looking for a Micro-atx case for a gaming rig that I will be building soon. I was hoping you guys could suggest some good cases that fit my needs, because I am torn on what to get. This will be an air cooled build so no need for radiator compatibility. I will be taking this to college so I want it to be pretty portable and preferably quiet. My budget is anything under $200. If you recommend a case, please explain why you like the case. Requirements for the case: - Micro-atx size - I don't want to go mini itx, and I want it to be pretty portable so no mid-tower/atx cases - Good Quality - no cheap plastic cases or crappy cases - Window - Must have window! I want to admire my work, and I'm not going to mod a window - Room for two graphics cards Thanks in advance!!

Hi my brother is looking to put together a gaming pc, for roughly the same budget as the new xbox one or ps4. So far iv found: Asus H81M-Plus Intel i3 4130 4GB (2*2GB) Kingston HyperX 1600MHz Seagate Barracuda 500GB sata3 HDD Cheap DVD drive CIT 1015BS mini tower case (includes 500w PSU) AMD HD7870 2GB iv totaled this up and it comes in under at £375 or $610 (I have a spare OS he can use even if it is 64bit vista) Do you think this is a good build, he is looking to play battlefield 4 and rome 2 total war , on medium to high settings at 1080p Cheers

Hello everyone, First time poster and visitor of linustechtips, I have built 2 gaming PC's in the past and am gearing up for my third build. I am struggling however because I would like to give a shot at a mATX gaming rig. After the past two weeks I am torn with the question of whether or not I am setting my self up for doom down the road. I chose mATX because occasionally I will LAN at my friends houses and would like something more easily transportable but don't want to sacrifice performance. My fist question is about the case, I need something with great airflow and have been looking at: -Bitfenix Prodigy M -Bitfenix Phenom mATX -Corsair 350d -Aercool DS (Dead Silent) I want to ensure that during my sometimes marathon LAN gaming sessions with will not cause my PC to overheat to quickly as I have had a problem with that in the past. Also I have a question about wether an I5 Haswell 4760k build is good enough or should I just upgrade to an I7. I know many games don't use hyperthreading right now. I mainly play WoW, SC2, DOTA, and some FPS's THank You

Hey, guys. First post, I usually lurk a fair bit. As the title says, I've been looking into mATX builds recently, and I've got a fair number of questions about it all (mATX, air travel with a desktop, other stuff). Specifically, this is the build I'm contemplating: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1ZmNe **Note that I already have everything besides the case, CPU, and motherboard** Here are some things that concern me/thoughts I've had about this potential build: I've thought about getting an aftermarket cooler, something like the Corsair H80, but I don't want to get anything I don't actually need for a functional build. I've heard from people that I may have to remove the 5.25" drive bay, considering the length of my card, but I assume that I can also just put the card on a lower PCIe slot. Another concern would be if I'd need lower profile RAM or not. Again, I figure it shouldn't be too much of an issue, but I can't be too careful. How would I go about cable management? Would that be a major concern? My PSU isn't modular, so there's a chance that free cables would create hassle. Is that easily avoidable? What else should I look out for if I move forward with this? As for the travel part, any tips/tricks to travelling with a desktop? I was thinking of taking most of the internal components out (i.e. drives, grahics card, RAM), wrapping those in anti-static and carrying them with me, and leaving the case with firm foam in it, all in some sort of hard-shell luggage case. And, if it doesn't fit snugly, I'd surround the case with more foam in the luggage. As far as I've seen, this seems like the ideal way to do it, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was something even easier and safer to do (besides staying at home and not travelling). Anyway, thanks in advance for whatever help you guys offer, and I'll see you around! --Gnarly

ASUS/Corsair mATX Build Plan: Hey everyone. This is my current plan for building a mATX gaming system with extreme focus on ASUS/Corsair parts. I have chosen these two manufacturers because they are, in my opinion, the best two component manufacturers at this time. My goals with the build are: Build a machine that is at least proficient at running games from this current generation. Come in under enthusiast costs. Display to friends and family my love for the two manufacturers. If you have any feedback/suggestions, please feel free to post them. Without further ado, let's get to my part selection. The Components: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($219.98 @ OutletPC) CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($99.99 @ Newegg) Motherboard: Asus MAXIMUS VI GENE Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($192.99 @ NCIX US) Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($174.99 @ Newegg) Storage: Corsair Neutron Series GTX 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($115.99 @ Amazon) Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($58.99 @ NCIX US) Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 660 Ti 3GB Video Card ($233.98 @ SuperBiiz) Case: Corsair 350D Window MicroATX Mid Tower Case ($79.99 @ Microcenter) Power Supply: Corsair Gaming 700W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply ($79.99 @ Microcenter) Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer ($16.98 @ OutletPC) Total: $1273.87 (Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.) (Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-10-30 23:55 EDT-0400) The Rationale: First and foremost, before even beginning to look at parts for this build, I already had it in my head that I wanted to use Corsair and ASUS products almost exclusively. I also knew that I wanted to do an mATX build as I have limited space and travel with my PC quite frequently. As soon as those factors were established, I dug in. Corsair, unfortunately, makes very few micro ATX cases and even fewer enthusiast quality ones... so the 350d was the obvious choice. It's enthusiast grade, but at a fairly affordable price point. The motherboard was also a fairly obvious solution. I knew I wanted a 4670K, so I needed a Z87 board. ASUS currently has 1 mATX Z87 board. The GPU wasn't such an easy task. I had to determine what ASUS card (being as Corsair doesn't manufacture GPUs... yet q.q) gave me the best price to performance ratio. I was juggling a 580 and the 660Ti... went with the 660Ti as I've heard that Fermi had some pretty big heat issues. RAM, SSD/HDD, and optical were all pretty easy to determine as well. 16GB RAM is a bit overkill, but I wanted this build to be semi-future safe. The SSD was selected because, again, this build has a heavy Corsair/ASUS focus. I went with the Caviar Blue HDD, though, because I've always had extremely good luck with WD drives. I didn't really run into trouble again until I was looking at CPU coolers and PSUs. For the cooler, I had to look and decide if I wanted an AIO or wanted to try my own custom loop. I opted for the AIO because of general ease of use. Never set up a custom loop before and don't really want to try it at this point in time. H100i was the obvious solution for my AIO cooler. For the PSU I went with the GS700 because it's price appropriate and has the LED (yep... non-modular. PITA, but modular PSUs are just too expensive). In Closing...: Well, that's about it. If you have any suggestions or feedback, let me know in a reply! I'll also be posting a build log whenever I build it (who knows when that's going to be...), so if you're interested in seeing this build, keep an eye out for it in the build log section! Thanks for reading!

I want an MAtx setup because I sometimes go to LAN parties and a full tower case would be hard to carry around. However I need the case to fit the Noctua NH-U14S because it is an extremely impressive piece of hardware and I cannot trust myself with liquid cooling. I am also not very experienced with computer building, so try to not give me any cases that are hard to work with. It would also be preferable to keep the case below $100 however I can go slightly over. (especially if it has brushed aluminum)

Hello Everyone, I am building gaming pc with a micro-atx motherboard, and I am wondering which one to get. I will not be over clocking, and using an intel i5-4670 CPU. I would like a motherboard that costs under $150 USD but would be willing to go higher if it had a really great feature. I want a high quality motherboard with 3 PCI slots, Sata III, and USB 3.0. Hopefully you guys can suggest some for me. If you suggest one, please say why you chose the motherboard you did. Thanks in advance!!

i found out this very moment that along with Frozen CPU and Performance PC that NCIX.US.com is looking to carry the mITX and mATX Mercury S3/5 line. taking per orders on thos specific cases and pedestals. could be interesting. the pricing looks a bit off, but prolly testing the waters for sales flow. international orders might benefit from this neat news. looks promising and perplexing at the same time. thoughts from the LinusTechTips membership?

Hey everyone, I am looking into building a micro-atx gaming pc and am uncertain on which case to buy. I really like the build quality and design of both the FD Arc Mini R2 and the 350D, but I am not sure which one to get. Which is better and why? Are there any other cases I should look into. My criteria for a case: - Must be Micro-ATX - Must have window - High Build Quality - No bigger than the two cases above Thanks in advance!!

Hello Everyone, I need your help, so I am planning on building a small form factor gaming pc with the following components. I am partial to the gtx 770 but am open to suggestions. I do not play MMO's and would like to run almost any other popular game on a 1920x1080 Monitor on ultra at 40+ fps. My absolute max for this pc is $1500, but I would prefer to keep it around 1400 USD (not including peripherals). I am planning to over clock a little bit, not too heavy though. Here is my parts list (There is link at the bottom to PC Part Picker): CPU: Intel i5-4670k -- I think this is pretty much set in stone. I am open to suggestions, but I like this CPU. GPU: Galaxy GeForce GTX 770 2GB -- I like the GTX 770 and I picked this aftermarket card because it looks sexy in white (Yes I realize you can get other cards like the Asus gtx 770 for cheaper) Again I am open to suggestions, but I think this card will suit my needs well. PSU: Corsair Gaming Series 700 Watt RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16 GB -- I want 16gb 1600mhz ram and I you suggest other ram like crucial ballistix, please explain why you chose it over the vengeance. CPU Cooler: Phanteks U-Type Dual Tower Heat-Sink PH-TC12DX Black -- I love the look and performance of this CPU cooler, but if there is a thinner, high quality case available I will change it to fit the case. Motherboard: Z87 LGA 1150 mATX motherboard -- I am not sure about this choice, if you have a better option please suggest it. Case: Fractal Design Arc Mini -- I am currently using this case because it looks sexy. I would like a smaller case for easier travel though, and would like recommendations as to high quality small and portable cases. I am willing to spend more money on the case if it means better portability and quality. HDD: WD Blue 1 TB 7200 RPM SSD: Samsung 840 Pro Series 128GB Case Fans: Fractal Design Silent Series R2 Fans to match the case -- if I change cases i will likely change fans PC Parts Picker Link: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/26iD6%C2'> As I said I am looking for a case smaller than the arc mini, but still high quality case (hopefully just as sexy as the Fractal Design Cases). I am change CPU cooler and gnu if it will mean a smaller case for better portability. I also don't know about the motherboard so some advice on that would be great. Any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance for your help!

Hi guys, don't post much on the forums but constantly keep track with Linus and Slick on Youtube. Thought I would share a recent mod I've been working on for just over a week now as there are a lot of people that enjoy the 350d case. The project was to fit an ATX board into the 350d for a future build (once the rampage IV extreme black edition lands). Here are the results, enjoy. Any questions just ask, I'll see what I can do to answer them. CAD/Template files available on request also. Before the mod

Rational: I basically want to build a relatively cheap gaming and video editing machine that is AMD based because even though Intel Core I7 series are the best at doing this. More and more programs are being multi-core optimized, which the 8 core fx can handle better then the I7 especially in streaming. Plus I'm somewhat on a budget. Components: CPU: AMD FX-8350 (Not really going to overclock it due to the motherboard selection) ~$200 Motherboard: Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 (I really want a MATX system because of its small form factor) ~$70 RAM: G.SKILL RipjawsX Series 2x8GB 1600MHZ (or whatever the cheapest ram stick there is that is relatively good quality) ~$130 GPU: MSI R9 280X Gaming Edition (or similar if there is a cheaper card) ~$330 PSU: XFX P1-850B-BEFX 850 Watt 80+ Gold (I already have this PSU in my server which in going to discontinue because no one is using it and it a really good quality PSU) ~$0 SSD/HHD: Samsung 840 Pro 128GB and 1TB Seagate 7200.12 (I also have these components in my old computer which I'm going to transfer to the new one in the final revision) ~$0 Case: Bitfenix Prodigy M Matx Case (Don't really care about the colour) ~$100 Total: ~$830 Objective: The goal of the build is to build a SFF computer that is pretty quiet and capable to doing serious gaming, video editing/rendering and 3D rendering like Blender (LOVE open source). Basically I want a computer that I can bring to a LAN party and say my computer is better than yours in terms of size to performance ratio. Extra things to mention: I could for a Geforece GTX 770 for the GPU, however with more and more programs going towards OpenCL like Adobe CC and Blender, I decided to go for the R9 280X which is not only a great value to performance but also somewhat future-proof. I also can't find a better motherboard then the one on the list on the Matx size of thing, seems like AMD is lacking in motherboard diversity then Intel. My PSU is about 6-7 months old now and at best it properly lost about 25 to 50 watts of power because it's been running on a server environment for about that amount of time, but it's enough to power my machine with a bit of overclocking head room. SSD and HHD isn't a real issue because first of all my SSD is made from Samsung and that my 1TB HDD is only about a year or two old, which isn't too bad. However I will upgrade to probably a WD Red 2TB in about two or three years. I kinda don't want to change my case because I love the looks of the Prodigy M with the handles and stuff, plus its pretty quiet. If you have any other suggestions on ways to improve this build, then by no means post it on this thread.

Which GPU (or dual GPU) configuration I should get..? Assuming the 4670k will temporarily run my monitor (1440p + 1080p?) and since I don't need it right away, should I wait for GPU prices to lower for the holiday season? Also, anyone know what kind of mPCIe Combo II options are available or worth getting for the ROG Gene VI motherboard? My needs: (1) currently running a 1440p monitor; maybe want to game in 4K in the future (2) 660W PSU and I want to put it to good use (3) don't want to spend over $700 on the GPU (3) Not sure on max GPU card length yet (case specs are 12.8" deep) Here's my current spec list (most components, except case, should arrive tomorrow) Case: Lian Li PC-C50b mATX HTPC Case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112303 PSU: Seasonic SS-660XP MOBO: Asus ROG Gene VI mATX CPU: Intel i5-4670k CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-L12 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007C861WO/ref=oh_details_o00_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 GPU: ??? RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum 2 x 8GB 1600Mhz SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 500GB Storage: 2 x 3TB Seagate Barracuda HDDs Feedback and constructive criticism is greatly appreciated!

With the newly released and slightly improved BitFenix Prodigy M out and about, I am indecisive about whether to get the mITX or the mATX variant. I am expecting to build a new gaming/editing system, and chose the Asus Z87I-PRO motherboard (DELUXE has wireless AC, I don't think that was approved in Europe), and was wondering what the benefits would be to build in the mATX case, even though I'm not using and mATX board. [spoiler Reasoning:] I chose the Z87I-PRO because it has a beefy VRM, lots of I/O, gigabit ethernet, supports 16GB RAM, has integrated Wireless, 6 SATA III ports, 4x 4-pin fan connectors, USB 3.0, BIOS flashback, 3 video connectors and a great aesthetic and small-form factor overall. Also, I do not plan on using SLI or XFIRE, also I have headphones with an integrated sound card (Logitech G35). Extra Q: Is there any mATX board which suits my requirements? Like I said before, no need for extra PCI-E slots or integrated audio but maybe it's cheaper? Just learned to use the spoiler tag. The more you know.

Heyho and Guten Abend. As mentioned I'm searching for a new tower and I need some help. A few weeks ago I decided to buy a new case and today is the day I want the divorce, maybe. I've done some research by myself and I think I... no, I know I want a case like a Lian Li PC-V355a. But what I don't know is a] would my current stuff actually fit in that case b] if not and it would be just the cooler, would a Noctua NH-L12 be fine and handle the CPU? So... I definitely don't want an ATX-tower or something like that it should be a cube or at least a smaller case than my current one (~w18,5cm ~d34cm ~h31cm) Yeah and price limits... don't know, something around that Lian Li. My system is linked in my signature under "sys", and maybe it's nice to have a visual overview, so there is a photo () attached bellow, too. Thanks.

Hi Everyone, I'm thinking about building a mATX high performance PC and I was wondering if anyone had any feedback about small improvements or really anything would also be much appreciated: CPU - Intel i7 4770K Motherboard - Asus Z87 Maximus Gene mATX RAM - Corsair Vengeance LP 16GB (2x8) Graphics Card - EVGA Geforce GTX 760 SC Power Supply - be quiet! Pure Power L8 600W Case - Obsidian 350D Windowed SSD - Crucial 240GB M500 HDD - WD Caviar Green 3TB (Fans - 5x 120mm be quiet! Shadow Wings High Speed) (Monitor - Asus VE278H Widescreen) I also have two other queries and I'm sure someone will know/be able to help: 1) Is there any real advantage of upgrading to ATX from mATX? I would love to have more expansion but I'm also concerned about the form factor; what are your thoughts? 2) I would love to colour-scheme this computer, especially with the window. What colour would you recommend (that is easy enough to get, so maybe not pink )? Thanks again, CJSun9

Hi, I have been using a Cooler MAster Elite 335U (http://eu.coolermaster.com/uk/product/Detail/case/mid-tower-elite-series/elite-335u.html) for 2 years now and want to upgrade. I am using a micro atx motherboard and want the case to be fairly small in width (AKA not a cube case like the Node 804). Any suggestions. I am only using one graphics card with no other expansion slots and a small (around 150mm) PSU. Also sorry if I did something wrong with placing this post. I'm a newbie.

So I am curious if I can get away with fitting my rubish mATX motherboard in this amazing case [Phanteks Luxe] for the meantime until I swap out my mATX Board & CPU/CPU Cooler. Am I able to do this without modification or am I able to get away with using the holes which work on the case & line up with the mATX board? I am wanting to do this without modification is it possible?, If not is it an easy process of drilling out some extra holes for the stand-offs ? Thanks

Hi all, I've been thinking of getting a mATX case for a bit now for a high end gaming build and I would like the case to be smaller to fit on my desk but still big enough to run a good high end build. I stumbled upon the N200 and thought it might be good, it looks nice and is at a really nice price. The only thing that worries me is the lack of dust filters on the front and the flimsy one up top. I looked at the Arc Mini R2 as well and I love the nice dust filters but it seems the fan controller is an issue for Fractal cases and it's around the same price as ATX cases. I don't necessarily need a mATX case I just need a nice case for around $100 or maybe less that's not huge and would be good for a gaming rig. Thanks!

I'll be buying a new PC in the next few days and I'm not sure which motherboard to get. I will be buying an i7 4970 (the non-K version because I am not very confident with overclocking at all) and will also be buying a GTX 770. Since I will not be overclocking I don't see the point in getting a z97 motherboard or should I? What's the benefit of having a Z97 board if I'm not going to overclock? Are there any good H97 MATX boards with lots of rear IO ports and at least 2 PCI-E 3.0 16x slots? Thank you, Blueprint

This is my first build, so I'm not at all sure what I'm doing. By searching around some on the web (focusing on performance/prices in Norway) I've found these specs: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler MSI Z97M Gaming Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard Kingston Fury Red Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory Crucial MX100 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive MSI GeForce GTX 760 4GB TWIN FROZR Video Card Corsair 350D Window MicroATX Mid Tower Case Corsair Enthusiast 650W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply Are all the parts even compatible? I'm especially unsure about the psu, as it's non modular and that might make it hard to fit in an mATX case (and maybe the power is to large?). I'm including it because it's something lying around in the house.

When I purchased my Asus Gryphon Z87 I had just started building systems and I was not a gamer therefor did not look for things like SLI compatibility or PCI-e slot spacing. I started off with a low end piece of junk GPU then over time I began to do more and more video editing and playing more games. Like it was destined to be I came across a refurb Asus GTX 660 ti, which is absolutely perfect for the light to moderate amount of gaming I do! Just as everything was rainbows and lollipops I got a little too clicky on Ebay one night and became the proud owner of a second, identical, graphics card. I was super stoked to try SLI out and see what difference it would make and as I clicked the card in under my original card I realized they are rather close together. So close as to pretty much restrict all air from reaching the fans on the upper card. A couple times I even heard the fan blades grinding into the PCB on the card below. They are like cannibalistic Siamese twins. The newer card is just trying to smother the card that I have fonder memories and a pleasant history with. First case of component jealousy. I attempted to move the lower card to the lower x16 slot. I am aware that the lower slot is at the 2.0 speed and the upper at 3.0, but read in forums that it would not matter. This config ended up removing my option to enable SLI from Nvidia Control Panel. I figured they may have to be running at the same speed so I went into BIOS and dumbed all of the slots down to 2.0, but no success with that either. I assume my best bet would be a PCI-e riser of some sort to move the cards further apart. My biggest dilemma is how/where to mount the lower card now that it has to be out of the way of the lower PCI-e x16 as well as be within range so the SLI bridge can connect. Does anyone know of some sort of GPU cage or PCI bracket mounting solution? Any ideas are greatly appreciated because I'm completely out of them.
