Hey everyone, I am currently running a Proxmox cluster for a small business including a nextcloud that I now need a different office solution for. We used Onlyoffice for quite some time now, but after some NC updates it doesn't work anymore and the amount of connections it allows in the free version isn't enough. The free version of Collabora Online isn't an option too, as the limit it gives is even bigger than Onlyoffice. I saw Libreoffice Online as a viable alternative, but couldn't find any good guides. Does anyone here have experience, guides or tips with the above software they'd like to share that could help me?

Hello I am using LibreOffice 6.4.7.2 on Linux Mint 20.2 with Cinnamon, and I'm running into a problem. I'm running into program freezes (usually unrecoverable, which I refer to as crash) associated with videos. Inserting a video simply doesn't work, I get a garbled mess of frames for the preview and it crashes when I try to play it in any way. (Fig. 1: The garbled mess. The entire video shows blue sky, which is why it is mostly blue. The colors vary depending on the content of the video.) Dragging and dropping the video file does seem to work, but it has it's own problems. It uses a generic thumbnail, and appears in seemingly random positions. (Fig. 2: The thumbnail.) It is very finicky to modify, and I have to use the "more options" tab to modify the numbers or it just reverts to a static value that's seemingly random. Even then, it's finicky, requiring multiple attempts. I have to center it and make it fill the slide or any portion of the side that isn't video will turn grey and remain so even if the slide advances. When working with these in a presentation, I have to save both before and after I insert and modify the position, or it's a near guaranteed crash. Why it almost never crashes if I save is unknown to me. Playing the video in the editor is also a crash. Playing the video while presenting is a different story. While it works fine most of the time when I test it on my computer, it requires a special setup to work when connected to any external display. Here is where things get really complicated. To get it to work I have to run it with a command preceded by "DRI_PRIME=1" For context, I'm using a dual-GPU muxless laptop from 2014. The GPUs are Intel integrated and an Nvidia GeForce GT 720M. Because of the various issues involved with using Linux on this setup (Nvidia didn't support muxless laptops until 2017), I'm using an open-source alternative called Nouveau. "DRI_PRIME=1" makes the program use the dGPU (the Nvidia card). For some odd reason it just crashes when I try to load the video with the integrated card. Then, I have to make sure the previous time I used Impress I had a successful exit. In other words, if it crashed last time and I terminated it, Impress will always tell me there is recovery data. For whatever reason, this is also a guaranteed crash, so I have to close Impress after I either load or discard the recovery data. Even after all that, it's still not guaranteed something will go wrong. Examples of freezes include: the slide never changes, the video thumbnail appearing and not disappearing, the video only playing on my PC proceeded by a crash, the video only playing on the external output (and sometimes I'll see it play on my PC a minute later, usually in a new maximized window) proceeded by a crash, and the video playing in a new maximized window. The behavior is a little off too, the slide takes a little bit to change, then the generic thumbnail flashes before the video plays. The video plays on my PC in a fullscreen window that flickers. If this happens, the slide is easily advanced, and the presentation can proceed as normal. If I advance the slide before the video loads, it freezes but recovers after a minute or so, and if I try to advance slides backwards into a video, it crashes and doesn't advance the slide backwards. When using the terminal to launch Impress with the dGPU, I noticed errors that only occur if the file I'm loading contains a video that I'm sure have to do with my issue: iijj22gg@I-Latitude-E5440:~$ libreoffice --impress ~/Documents/videoExample.odp DtsGetHWFeatures: Create File Failed DtsGetHWFeatures: Create File Failed Running DIL (3.22.0) Version DtsDeviceOpen: Opening HW in mode 0 DtsDeviceOpen: Create File Failed (soffice:20010): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: 13:48:57.423: gst_element_make_from_uri: assertion 'gst_uri_is_valid (uri)' failed ** (soffice:20010): WARNING **: 13:48:57.437: Failed to construct frame-grabber pipeline 'no element "PP"' DtsGetHWFeatures: Create File Failed Running DIL (3.22.0) Version DtsDeviceOpen: Opening HW in mode 0 DtsDeviceOpen: Create File Failed DtsGetHWFeatures: Create File Failed Running DIL (3.22.0) Version DtsDeviceOpen: Opening HW in mode 0 DtsDeviceOpen: Create File Failed DtsGetHWFeatures: Create File Failed Running DIL (3.22.0) Version DtsDeviceOpen: Opening HW in mode 0 DtsDeviceOpen: Create File Failed (soffice:20010): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: 13:48:58.191: gst_element_make_from_uri: assertion 'gst_uri_is_valid (uri)' failed ** (soffice:20010): WARNING **: 13:48:58.205: Failed to construct frame-grabber pipeline 'no element "PP"' Normally nothing is returned to the terminal, but with a video, all this stuff appears. The DTS and DIL related info acts like a broken record, appearing over and over as I interact with Impress. All the other Impress features I've used work as intended, but the videos... I'm using Impress all week at a public event, so the sooner I can solve this problem the better. The simple solution may be to simply use Windows, but due to the age of my CPU it struggles.

I'm pretty sure there have been some people who have posted about this sort of issue before, but I really don't know how to word an online search for a solution, so I'll simply do it here. So, I recently created a Writer document & I'm attempting to paste a link to a photo on Twitter into the document, but instead, it's doing like the Twitter title/link to the user's profile instead of an actual link. I'm thinking it might be related to a setting I need to change in LibreOffice, but I don't actually know if I'm right on that. But I'll include a screenshot to show just what I mean. If anyone happens to need any further details or if you need to ask me anything else, feel free to do so & I can fill you in! Thanks in advance to anyone who can help! :)

Heyoo! I'm having an issue with a project that's running me in circles every time I approach it (a case of too much information). I have a lore project with 20+ years worth of content (specifically character information) that I and affiliated participants would like to be able to access in a streamline manner. It's personal, not commercial, so nobody's going to be putting out money for it. Thankfully only two people need to be able to have the ability to edit it. Basically what I'm looking for are full character profile sheets (images displayed as well) that can link to eachother and index pages (alphabetical and generational) based on lineage and relationships. OpenOffice/LibreOffice spreadsheets with hyperlinking between a single index sheet and the individual character sheets, then between those character sheets worked passably for a year or two. However, as time goes on, relationships are gained and lost as the lore evolves, bloodlines expanded and more characters are introduced to the setting overall (topping 110+ now), the current method has become an absolute editing nightmare. Primarily because to make changes to any character, ANY and all sheets that include that one character have to be manually edited and re-linked. Exponential growth at its finest. It's now a massive time sink that has all but gone stagnant due to the fact that nobody wants to put that ridiculous amount of time in anymore. I'm looking into completely (or nearly) redesigning the approach and possibly just moving to a different medium. I've looked at databasing, but it seems quite complex, time intensive and it's looking like there aren't many great free AiO solutions out there. Looking at OpenOffice/LibreOffice's Base program, it comes off as a massive can of worms that I'm not even sure can entirely do what I need it to do visually. It seems like overkill. I'm being told elsewhere that spreadsheets can't do what I'm looking to do; that it's just above their capability. Coding up a website as another method of database also seems like grand overkill (not to mention the time sink). I'm also not going to rely on a web based cloud database (like WorldAnvil) due to the fact that the data is at the mercy of another entity (plus potential costs), and I want the ability for myself and the other person who will be maintaining this to be able to edit a local copy. In summary? Whatever solutions needs to be able to: 1. Have stylized profile boards/sheets with both text and images. 2. Be able to link between those sheets and index boards. 3. Preferably be easy to edit in the case that those relationships change. 4. Be editable as a local copy offline. 5. If cost is involved it needs to be low, one-time and no cost for participants to view and navigate the project results. 6. Preferably be relatively user friendly and easy to learn due to time constraints (and that I'll have to teach the other editor). All of that in mind: Suggestions on what might do the deed and where should I focus my time? Can advanced spreadsheet functions do the task, or is something crazy like databasing required? Thanks for any responses ahead of time!

Hello, everybody! As usual- apology if I am pasting this in the wrong forum, but from what I found this seems to be the place. I am trying to create a database that has two "main" tables of information- one containing the info of all the workers (name, occupation and so on, just basic info), and the other containing all the hardware the workplace poses- something like an inventory/log book with types, models and full (where applicable) specs of the machines (be they laptops, printers etc.). Along side this I wish there are a few "slave" tables with information about specific changes to X and Y machines. First of all I have never created actual databases only excel tables with different filters, conditional formatting and a few basics formulas here and there. I've been hitting my head against the wall for a few days now, trying to create an actual database. Currently using LibreOffice Base for it, but I am not sure how suitable this is. My end goal is something like this: The user loads up the database and he has two lists: of the workers and of the hardware- if he clicks a worker he sees all the hardware he poses and uses. And if he clicks a hardware he sees who posses it alongside some info/history of the machine- who used it before, what changes have been made to it and so on. As of right now I managed to create a database with single master- the hardware so when I click on a machine I see who uses it, but for the life of me I can't get it the other way around at the same time. Does my idea make any sense in the world of databases or should I rethink it from the ground up? Is a database really what I need here, or some other way of keeping track of it all would suffice? Is LibreOffice suitable for the task? Thank you all in advance, and sorry if I've used wrong terms/words and whatnot (English isn't my main language) or if it seems like I am looking for the easy way out. I've tried coming up with the answer myself, but at this point I am just stuck.

So I have been writing/refining my resume for the last several weeks. And it’s finally done. I am really happy with it. Thank heavens! Anyways, it was a bigger task than expected because I didn’t want to pay for MS Office. So I used Libre Office instead. At first it was absolute torture. The menus are all over the place. The toolbars don’t make sense. And the worst part is I still can’t figure out why images have black backgrounds instead of « no background ». Fortunately, it’s easy to play with the images in Google Docs then paste them to Libre Office. I know I sound like a total noob LOL. And then I remember that Word was never that great. It was also a headache! And it’s like: “why do Word programs suck?”. So I’m just wondering if LinusTechTips would like to answer my question in a funny/informative way.

I've lost my USB with no backups for some of my work. But the DOCX file I want shows under my recent files in LibreOffice. It's clearly saved a thumbnail of the document. Is there any way I can access this, so I can get a better view of the thumbnail? Any help is appreciated

First, I don't have Pages, Keynote and Numbers, it doesn't come pre-installed so I use LibreOffice instead. When I make a table too big it makes it like this... It doesn't separate itself to the next page, it just go through it. It disturbs me a lot.... Anybody has experience with LibreOffice?

So some of you might know that I switch to Linux for some reasons and it comes with LibreOffice. I started using LibreOffice yesterday and I got some problem. (I'm still adapting) So whenever I put numbering after bullet it goes back to one.... Should be like this:

LibreOffice first introduced the development of LibreOffice Online in 2011, it still hasn't been released. Extremely useful if you are trying to move away from the corporate giants as you will have another needed service free from them. Just recently, IceWarp and Collabra are joining together as well with the LibreOffice contributers to build a web based version of the desktop counterpart. There is no release date set and won't be determined until further in development. LibreOffice will offer the front-end based on HTML 5 and the server-side that can be self-hosted (such as on a personal vps) and utilized/harnessed to match an organizations/personal needs. There is also LibreOffice mobile for the android in the works back in 2011 and was close to finishing but did not succeed. LibreOffice for iOS has no development plans. On my Windows 8 laptop jump list works perfectly with the LibreOffice, but on my Windows 7 desktop holding the left mouse button and dragging up on the LibreOffice icon does not show a list of my recently opened documents. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hi everyone, I made this thread for people to share stories of bad IT people at their school or workplace. My school, for some stupid reason, buys copies of Windows 7 Professional for EVERY SINGLE COMPUTER. They leave them idling for 95% of the time, and only ~8 of the PCs are actually used for content creation (graphic design lab). The others could be replaced with RPis, for all the use they get. Rather than running Folding at Home, everyone gets their own school account, and the PCs are kept logged out, so nothing can run in the meantime. Our Computer Class is an absolute joke. It is great for learning to touch type (I'll give them that), but every single thing I learned was self-taught. After 5 years of class, nobody has been taught the difference between a HDD and an SSD, a bit vs. a byte, or that Linux even exists! We spend half the year learning about Internet safety (Don't get kidnapped by some random person you met online, kids!), and the other half doing ridiculous tasks in Photoshop (which we relearn if we work on the yearbook). Rather than use the new LibreOffice, we are forced to use MS Office 2003, which works fine, but has a different UI from the newer versions and is obviously not forwards-compatible with the documents we write at home. Luckily, I just graduated from that school, and I'm looking forward to taking Programming classes at my new school. Sorry for the rant, and share your stories below :)
