Hey! So I know that UEFI is the new fancy bios with all the fancy gui and secure boot and stuff. Legacy bios is the old one for MBR systems. However, I read that there is a performance difference when installing an Operating System from UEFI bios and LEGACY bios. Is this true? If yes, which one should I go for while installing the OS?(Windows, Linux dualboot)

I was changing settings in my BIOS (I believe it was changing something from Legacy to UEFI, trying to change it to Secure Boot and enabling some Intel Platform something stuff), restarted my computer, and now I have no display and my PC is turning on and off repeatedly. I unplugged the computer, took out the CMOS battery for 10 minutes, plugged it back in and still same result. Used screwdriver to connect 2 CLR_CMOS pins, plugged the Power On plug (thats going from i believe switch button) onto these 2 pins and held switch button for like 30 seconds. After putting back the Power On plug back into its place i tried booting my pc up again. It went into the cycle again however at the first time after starting it i heard few beep sounds (at the rate of around 1 beep per sec). I also tried taking off my RAM, putting it back in etc.and still nothing. Im pretty sure that its not PSU's fault because everything seems to get power. What May be causing the problem and how can I solve it? Hello everyone, I have had a really weird issue with NVIDIA GeForce drivers for a few years now and I cannot figure it out for the life of me. First and foremost, the issue. Every time I try to update my GPU drivers (via GeForce Experience, game ready drivers without GeForce experience, etc.,) it will get stuck at around 1/3 through the process, stops, and fails to install graphics drivers. I have tried every single iteration of installation including DDU in safe mode, not in safe mode, clean installation instead, express installation, disconnecting from my local network, yet nothing seems to work. This has been happening on the same Windows 10 legacy installation (don't ask, I haven't found the time to switch to UEFI lol) since about 2016 with a GTX 1070, 1070 Ti, RTX 3070, and an RTX 3070 Ti. But I have found one method that works every single time without failure. To give myself a little bit of credibility, I am a system technician at a local computer warehouse (specializing in Windows software and GPU testing/repair) and I am very good at solving issues like this at work. I am currently running an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, 2x16GB Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 3600MHz, an MSI MPG Gaming Carbon Pro WIFI, an EVGA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti FTW3 Ultra Gaming, and my BOOT drive is a Samsung 850 Evo 256GB. The only fix or way around this strange issue is to download the GPU drivers from the NVIDIA website WITHOUT GeForce experience, restarting my system in safe mode without networking, just plain safe mode, and installing them. This does NOT work when I am in safe mode with networking. I have absolutely no clue why this happens. The only thing that I could find online was the fact that RTX 3000 series technically isn't compatible with Windows legacy but that doesn't explain the fact that I was having the exact same issue with GTX 1000 series, which has no compatibility issues with a legacy Windows installation. Obviously the only thing that I haven't tried is to install drivers on a fresh installation of Windows but I am lazy and haven't found the time to transfer my important data to another drive. I am only asking if anyone can explain what is happening or if anyone has ever experienced something similar to my issue. This is one of the only driver issues that I haven't figured out for YEARS and it is driving me absolutely nuts!

Recently I rebuilt my system to swap my motherboard and upgrade my CPU. (MSI PRO Z790-P WIFI and I7-12700K) The system POSTs fine, I have good thermals, and everything is detected, but no matter what I do, my original boot drive (XPG SX8200 M.2) will NOT show up as an option in the boot order. I've noticed my boot mode is greyed out, and locked into UEFI. I think that's the issue, but no matter what I try I absolutely cannot get it to change. I even turned off secure boot, but that didn't unlock the option... I'd really prefer to just be able to boot into my M.2, is there a way through this? (I know in theory I could just make another UEFI-friendly Windows install on a different drive, but I have data on all of my drives :/) OS: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit (I would tell you the version, but I can't check it right now for obvious reasons) CPU: I7-12700K (Base clock) RAM: 4x8 DDR4 LPX Vengance 3200mhz GPU: Gigabyte AORUS Elite RTX 3060 Mobo: MSI PRO Z790-P WIFI Storage: ADATA XPG SX8200 PRO M.2 1TB SK Hynix Gold S31 SSD 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM HDD 2TB BIOS:E7E06IMS.110 (09/01/2022)

My PC has an XEON E5-2690 CPU with an X79 motherboard and NVIDIA K2200 Video Card. System uses the American MegaTrends BIOS. I installed Windows 10 without any problems and changed the all of the CSM BIOS settings to UEFI. It was strange because when I tried to Disable CSM, it would show a message saying "CSM can't be Disabled because Video is in Legacy Mode" But this wasn't true - it was set to "UEFI Only". I wasn't sure what to do at that point, so I changed that setting to "UEFI First" Now, when I try to restart the computer - nothing happens. The weirdest part is that I can't even get into BIOS. After pressing the power button, the system stays on the BIOS screen, beeps once (which happens three different times), and then the monitor display simply cuts off. All lights on the PC, keyboard, and mouse turn on and seem to be working normally - but Windows 10 refuses to start. Why is this happening? Did I just brick this motherboard?

Hello, My specs are intel core i7 11th gen, ram 16 GB, 500 GB SSD, And a intel iris xe grapics. I wan't to install Windows 7 on this hardware but many people have been telling me my hardware is too new and Windows 7 is too old. People are saying it's very likely Windows 7 wont even boot on my system as it won't know what to do with the CPU, Chipset, USB, SSD/HDD Controller or anything else. Please don't tell me to use Windows 10 as I want to use Windows 7. And I also know it has security risks and is End of Support but please do help me. I just want to use Windows 7 on this system. Thanks.

My ultimate aim is to get the hard disk formatted GPT rather than MBR and boot accordingly. The laptop boots from USB as long as "Legacy Support" is enabled in BIOS. When I change this to disabled the laptop won't boot from USB and reports the hard disk error originally mentioned. Note: When "Legacy Support" is disabled in BIOS, the F9 boot screen shows no entries My question is how can I get the laptop to boot in GPT mode from USB to allow me to install windows with GPT partitions?

I am attempting to install win 11 on my fairly modern PC, but I am unable to satisfy PC health check. It thinks my Secure boot is disabled. Even Unsupported. I have updated my bios to the latest version and have tried to find any BIOS settings that should have any effect. But no success. Does anybody have any idea what's the issue or what are the correct settings. Sys info lists BIOS mode as legacy ( i haven't figured out how to change that) and Secure boot as unsupported. Hi! First, I apologize if I misworded the title, I'm not fully knowledgeable in this field. Anyway, my SSD probably died 2 days ago. I can't boot to windows, can't reinstall windows, and all I could do was copy things off of it, but other than that it was write protected and I couldn't cancel it in any way. Now, I brought an old hard drive which has Windows 7 on it, so I could at least boot. The drive didn't show in UEFI mode, so I had to change to CSM/legacy to boot from it. The problem is that my keyboard and mouse don't work now. They work in the bios, but as soon as I boot into windows they stop working (they both have lights, and they turn off when starting to boot). I'd appreciate any help regarding this issue. Thank you!

Hi i have a couple of questions about a DIY NAS.. I´m using a legacy PC for the build.. with an ASROCK DUAL SATA2 Mobo So Its safe to install a NAS OS like FreeNAS or similar into a basic USB pen drive? If this thumb drive dies, all my data its lost ? (not the config and ths OS files but the images, docs etc) If i create a RAID, via the Nas OS, and for any raison i broke my config or the USB drive go away... can i bring back the raid or everything its lost.. A Raid PCI Card works aside of the NAS OS Thanks in advance

Hey, Legacy or UEFI: is either better for unRAID (i.e. more stable)? Disregard system support, is one better than the other?

I purchased a couple of new hard drives. I flashed to the latest version of the BIOS to 0803 for this mobo from 0303 but the BIOS settings are essentially night and day difference. Loading defaults results in my PC not being bootable. I also have custom RAM settings in the original bios which I tried to change with no difference. I tried contacting Asus support but they remained silent. There's no documentation online whatsoever. The online (and electronic manual) still shows the original BIOS settings not the new one. I tried searching online with no success on what each of the [new] settings do which are not obvious (to me). I'm choked how Asus can offer BIOS updates without documentation to follow.

I am having a problem with my monitor and can't find a possible explanation. I have an old pc i bought from a second hand store running windows 98SE. I use it for old games and testing random stuff. I was able to track down the drivers of every component and the system works perfectly. But when i turn it of via the shutdown menu the screen stays on and the powerbutton is green (on). Pressing the power button does nothing, and none of the menu buttons work. I have also noticed the LCD panel stays on because it keeps radiating a bit of light. It essentially freezes now comes the weird part. If i press the power button of the pc (not the monitor), the monitor goes in standby mode and the turns on again detecting a video signal. I have no idea why this happens and it is pretty annoying having to pull out the power cord when i want to completely turn of the system. note: if i open the bios and turn off the system via the pc powerbutton the screen does shut down. Via the os it doesn't. Hi , a friend of mine gave as gift this old p5b deluxe from asus with cpu and ram already installed, so I've build the system with a fsp Hydro pro 500w but unf. No post and no beep, everything is hooked up correctly but today I've thinked something, does this board needs -5v? My psu is new so like any new psu it doesn't have the -5v pin but in the manual of p5b deluxe I found this graph indicating -5v ( even if the board is from 2006 I think) it is maybe the cause for non booting?

Sony just announced the LA-EA5 adapter, unofficially bringing an end to the A mount. But, that doesn't mean you have to throw away your A-mount lenses! This adapter will allow users to adapt older lenses to newer bodies (lke the one shown in the video below. An interesting feature is that it supports autofocus in lenses that don't have an internal autofocussing system like the Sonnar T* 135mm f/1.8 ZA and Planar T* 85mm f/1.4 ZA. Priced at $248, it'll begin shipping in October 2020. Here's a full compatibility list: LA-EA5 compatibility page Source: https://fstoppers.com/gear/sony-la-ea5-lens-adapter-unofficially-bookends-mount-514601

Hi All, I recently purchased new SSD and normal HDD. I'm facing issues while installing windows 10. I got my usb drive loaded with windows 10 from rufus (GPT type). In the bios setting, I set the boot mode as legacy+UEFI and chose usb stick to install windows. But it threw an error saying I need to boot using UEFI mode. So I changed the setting to UEFI in the boot setting and tried to boot from pendrive. But it's not working. The screen just freezes and nothing happens. Also I don't find option to disable secure boot in the bios setting. Motherboard: MSI 970 Gaming motherboard. Is there any option available to boot using UEFI mode or I should recreate usb again with MBR type ?

Each day I am finding out new stuff with my PC, and today that would be Legacy and UEFI. In my motherboard settings I noticed that I had the option for Legacy or UEFI, that was set to legacy. Now should I make a switch to UEFI (I think it is has quicker boot speeds?), and if I do make that change will that wipe my PC of all data? Thanks Edit: My SSD is GPT formatted CPU : AMD Ryzen 5 3600 RAM: Corsair Vengance LPX DDR4 2*8GB (CMK16GX4M2B3000C15) Motherboard: MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX (BIOS Version is latest) PSU: CoolerMaster MasterWatt 650 GPU: GIGABYTE GTX 1060 6GB OC

I have a 2007 macbook kicking around. I really only want to use this thing for the webcam. Record a short video of myself, and copy it to a USB drive. It doesn't appear to have iMovie or QuickTime Pro installed, so those applications won't record video. The "photo booth" app records some video, but sometimes doesn't record the whole thing (cuts the video short). I've tried looking at really old versions of OBS and VLC, but can't get them to work. Is there any software that works with OSX 10.5.8 that can record video? Or should I perhaps try installing Linux to record video? As another note: I no longer have the install media for this macbook, so I can't reinstall the OS if things go sideways. Yeah, it's a really old version of Mac OS, it's a 13 year old laptop, I don't expect much; I just want to squeeze an extra few drops of life out of this thing if I can before it goes to the graveyard.

Installing F4 from F3 worked fine, but after installing BIOS F5a on a Gigabyte Aorus Master sTRX40, my Windows installation would not boot. I thought the BIOS wasn't seeing the drive etc etc so I booted from a disc and did startup repair and then it went straight in! I noticed that I no longer have a UEFI partition, or a system reserved partition. Instead I have a random 128MB partition as the F: drive letter on my SSD and a 261MB unallocated partition. My secondary HDD also has a random 185MB unallocated partition. Running system information showed the BIOS mode is Legacy! I have no idea how this has happened! I have never ever converted from UEFI to Legacy! Also in disk management if I right click the SSD, it says "convert to GPT" as greyed out implying it has also been converted to MBR in the process. Please can somebody explain how I can convert it back to UEFI, convert it back to GPT, and get the necessary partitions back so I can boot up and undo what Windows has done? Thank you in advance!

Upgrading an almost decade-old PC. Please advise.

Hi. I was given an old, but still functioning, HP Pro desktop and decided that I would gradually max it out instead of just throwing it away. It is not my daily PC but I plan on having it for entertainment in my house for movies, internet browsing and maybe some gaming, where capable. Here are its current specs: Processor: Intel Core i3-530 (73W) with its stock heat sink and fan. Motherboard: HP MS-7613 LGA 1156 RAM: 8 GB (4x2GB 1333 mhz) GPU: Nvidia GTX 650 TI PSU: 500W Please give me advice on the best CPU and the GPU to buy for this motherboard. Also, I'd like to ask if it would also be necessary to upgrade the heat sink and fan if I replace the current CPU with a quad-core one without any intention of overclocking it. Please help. Thanks!- 14 replies

I have windows installed on one ssd in legacy mode, 2 other ssd's and 2 other hdd's are installed as storage for programs and files. This week i want to upgrade to an NVME ssd drive and i want to clean install a system on it in UEFI mode which shouldn't be a problem. My question is when i boot in UEFI mode on the new nvme drive, will i see my storage drives, my data on them and so on?

First of all any help is much appreciated. I have never built or done major upgrades to a PC before. TLDR: Are new GPUs compatible with Legacy bios? What are my options? I have a Dell XPS 8700 that I would like to breathe some life into. It has an i7 4790 CPU, 24 gigs of RAM, SSD, couple HDDs, and a really outdated and basically useless GPU. I am hoping to upgrade the GPU and also the power supply. The long term goal is to build a new PC at some point but I figure the GPU and PSU are a good start that can be swapped to a new build. After doing a bunch of research about size requirements (the case is constrained, MOBO obstacles, etc.) and measuring I am hoping to get a 5700 xt or similar. Then I read about BIOS compatibility and people said new cards (especially 3rd party AMD cards) often don't work with Legacy bios. Is this true? Anyway around this? I went into the BIOS settings and the computer is indeed in Legacy BIOS, the drives are MBR etc. so if there is an issue can I use an MBR to GPT converter on boot drive (or all drives?) and then boot in UEFI mode? I really appreciate any insight that you may have!

My second pc build went somewhat smoothly until it came to actually booting up the pc. The computer posts and I can get to the bios via the gpu but both of my drives are not detected and don’t show up in the boot menu/boot priority. Switching the sata modes doesn’t work. I don’t know what else to do to hopefully install an os other than getting a new mobo or new drives or both.
