  2. So a user on the r/AMD subreddit called tuxubuntu, made a great post about the very high (primarily L3) cache latencies of the Ryzen CPU. As always, take this with a grain of salt. Apparently, the L3 cache on the Ryzen CPU is not a "standard" cache, but rather what is known as a victim cache. Due to the way the Ryzen CPU is built, by having 2x CCX (that is 2 4 core modules) essentially copy/pasted on the die, it means the victim cache is split in 2, one for each CCX module: Full Ryzen 7 8 core die: 1 CCX module: The issue then arises when a core/thread from one CCX module tries to access data from the victim L3 cache from the other CCX module: So imagine one core from the left CCX try to read date from the mid L3 cache block in the other CCX module on the right. So what does this mean? Crappy performance forever? Well not necessarily. One of the fundamental tasks of an operating system is task scheduler. That is the part that of the OS that controls all the threads made by software, and applies them to the different cores on the CPU. What Windows seems to be doing at this point, is to just spread threads out to whatever core, despite the needs of the L3 cached data by these threads. A quick fix would be to patch the scheduler to assort the threads in a better way suited for the Ryzen 6 and 8 core SKU's. As things stand right now, Windows are essentially mishandling/scheduling the threads on Ryzen, and this could be solved to a high extent (although not completely). Thing is, we don't exactly know how Windows treats Ryzen: Like a normal Intel CPU or like an old AMD bulldozer based CPU, however, a solution seems to be possible. This could also explain the very odd performance behaviour of Watch Dogs 2. A game that can utilize a lot of threads yet performs poorly on Ryzen: It is possible for a piece of software to override the OS scheduler, in deciding where each thread goes. As this game is made with the 6/7 jaguar cores in PS4 and XBOne in mind, as well as standard Intel cores, it is highly likely (though unconfirmed), that this game places threads in a way, that handles data on the victim cache in a way that causes a lot of cross traffic between the 2 CCX's, thus creating huge latencies at the cost of performance. With AMD's recent announcement of coop with Bethesda for upcoming games, both for VEGA, but also Ryzen, it is my understanding, that these games will utilize not only VEGA/Vulkan specific tech, but also be optimized for multithreaded applications on the CPU side, as well as preventing this issue (one would assume). Either way, with the Asus boards seemingly crapping the performance of both Ryzen and DDR4 memory giving wrong performance impressions and a non-supporting scheduler in Windows for this entirely new architecture, the performance of Ryzen has not had its final say yet. 3. Hello! I am a gamer like I am sure a lot of members of this forum are. I play games such as battlefield, league of legends, rainbow 6 siege. A couple of days ago we had our internet go out in our house, and ever since we have been having weird internet issues. All of the games I play have had ping/latency increase anywhere from 15-20ms. Also, when we run speed tests (tested on multiple devices), it is finding our default location (based off of ping) to be somewhere in Kansas. I am aware that some ISPs have locations in these areas and it could be what is causing this issue, but when I run a check on my location using our IP address, it gives us the correct location. Speed tests are not the only issue, where as the typical chat services I use are detecting my location to be in south/central US region (I am in Ohio). Also, when I ran a traceroute to my typical game server IPs with help from a rep at riot games, we found that my home connection was awesome; however, there were nodes causing extreme packet loss and high ping due to what we believe is improper routing/pathing/node selection(that sounds about what they were telling me). I contacted my service provider and of course they are only able to tell me that my devices is working fine since the speeds are fine. Obviously my device is fine. I have changed regions manually in certain tests and the results came back normal. I am not a networking expert, but for some reason in ALL of my games there seems to be an issue with the nodes/routes selected to reach the server, all going back to finding the incorrect location. Not sure why all of the sudden we are having these issues, but it is annoying to constantly find new ways in which this is messing my internet/gaming experience up in some way or another. My ISP is Time Warner Cable(Spectrum). I am not able to switch ISP. They have attempted to "reset my connection" and "refresh my modem's settings" among other things. None have helped. I have flushed DNS. I have cleared my host's cache. I do not have a VPN. Also, about any other response that I get has not led to a solution. The representative at Riot believes that this is on my ISP's end, but again I am no expert. I am not sure how cable internet works, but when attempting to rescue the internet after it went out, we found an ethernet cord coming from our modem/router and not connecting to anything. We were not sure if this was ever even connected to anything and it is highly unlikely that it became disconnected (since the way our cables are managed). We decided anyways to plug the cable into our cable box(the only similarly branded device with an ethernet port), and all of the sudden the internet began to work. We do not know if it is because of what we did, and we do not know if it was necessary or if it is causing our issues. When we have tried disconnecting the cable again and restarting the modem, we are incapable of getting internet access. Not sure if any of that last part is irrelevant, but I am attempting to provide as much info as possible. Hopefully someone can help me resolve my issue. Thanks!
  4. I recently got my hands on a Logitech G710+, which comes with a USB passthrough. I'd like to use this with my G502 since the wire hangs off my desk. Will this add any latency to my mouse input?
  5. Hi ppl, how are you? Here is the deal: I've doing some benchmarks to see what my gear has to offer. Here is what I have: Mobo: MSI 970A Krait Edition USB 3.1 CPU: AMD FX-6350 Overclocked @4.4Ghz Cooling: Corsair H45 GPU: AMD Radeon R9 380 ASUS Strix 4GB 256bits RAM: 16GB (4x4GB) Kingston HyperX Fury 1866mhz (CL10-11-10 @1.5V) SSD: AMD Radeon R3 120GB HDD: 500GB Seagate Barracuda 64mb 7400rpm OS: Windows 10 Pro Passmark says that my RAM Latency is something around 60ns and says that it represents "21%", where 100% is the expected results for that benchmark comparing with others benchmarks with the same RAM model. UserBenchmark says the same: http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/3221269 I actually reset all my mobo settings to default and tryed once again those benchmarks, but the results on my RAM were the same, so, my CPU overclock is not the problem, I think. I've also never messed with overclocking my ram, so... Should I be worried about this benchmark results?
  6. What happens if I get a 3000 mhz RAM but it says on my motherboard that to reach this frequency I have to overclock the ram but I don't. So basically I don't overclock the ram and the motherboard says to reach this frequency I have to overclock. Also is it worth it? And what should I get if I want 32 gb DDR4.
  7. hi does a usb extensioin cable add noticeable latency? thanks
  8. I've been fighting this for a while now without success: I experience audio pops and clicks accompanied by stuttering and sudden freezes in games, as well as stuttering in video playback on my machine. I've been able to narrow down the issue to being caused by high interrupt to process latency and hard pagefault resolution time as measured in LatencyMon. Here's a screenshot of the results after 5 minutes of running at idle: And here's the full report: And this is the same test on load (playing the game Flatout): And the full report of that: It may be important to note that the interrupt to process latency isn't at a high level all the time. It's low for a few seconds, goes insanely high for a moment and drops back to normal levels, so it's not so much a constant timing as it is (seemingly) random spikes that happen every few seconds. Oh yeah, and I'm aware that the DPC routine execution time got a little high on the load test. That's caused by my audio card (Asus Xonar DX) and is a known issue with many of those cards. I installed the low-DPC-latency version of the unofficial unixonar drivers to reduce the problem but incresed latency is normal and inevitable with those cards. Anyway, in the process of troubleshooting, I actually took the audio card out and removed the drivers. Made no difference to the interrupt to process latency spikes so that's not the source of the problem. The GPU doesn't seem to be the problem either. The issue persisted after having taken that out as well and using the integrated graphics instead. Also, I use the Madvr video renderer for my video player (mpc hc) and that has an option to work in GPU exclusive mode in which the video stuttering completely goes away. Also, I've noticed some peculiar CPU behavior while testing. When I use stress testing software (Heavy Load) and I stress both CPU cores, the interrupt to process latency drops to normal levels and stays there for the duration of the test. However, if I only stress test the first core, the interrupt to process latency goes all the way up to crazy town and also consistently stays there. I'm not sure but I think it may be an IRQ address problem. Here's what popped up in device manager: It looks weird to me that some of the devices have the same numbers in the brackets. Or maybe it's perfectly normal. I don't know. Uhh... is it? Anyway, here's what I've tried so far to fix the problem (none of which made any difference): Putting on fresh thermal paste on both the CPU and the GPU Meticulously cleaning the internals of my computer to make sure there's no dust Resetting the BIOS settings, first in the BIOS itself, then with the jumper Updating the motherboard BIOS to the newest version Reverting the motherboard BIOS to an old version Fiddling around with BIOS settings (Yes, Cool&Quiet is disabled) Using older GeForce drivers Installing different versions of Windows and Linux Making a clean installation of Windows and NOT installing any drivers or software other than LatencyMon to rule out driver-related causes Unplugging every single thing from the IO ports aside from the monitor Unplugging every single non-essential thing from the motherboard and using the integrated graphics, no audio, no network etc. Pretty much disabled every component that could be disabled in the BIOS and still allow the OS to boot Running a full scan with Malwarebytes Taking out memory dimms, swapping them with other ones, swapping the slots Disabling the High Precision Event Timer in both BIOS and the OS Disabling the pagefile in the OS (in hopes that it would at least take care of the crazy hard pagefault resolution time but it made no difference) Moving the pagefile to another HDD Praying I'm out of ideas at this point so if you guys have any suggestions, they are very much welcome. System specs: CPU AMD Athlon 7850 Black Edition (2x 2.8GHz) Motherboard ASUS M3N78-VM RAM 8GB DDR2 5-5-5-15 @400MHz GPU ASUS GeForce 9800 GT (1GB GDDR3) Storage 1TB Seagate HDD PSU OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W Cooling Stock Sound ASUS Xonar DX 7.1 Operating System Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64
  9. Im using the Dell Inspiron Gaming 7567. Im having latency issues with my laptop. I tried various steps but still cannot solve. I used LatencyMon to identify the issue.Your system appears to be having trouble handling real-time audio and other tasks. You are likely to experience buffer underruns appearing as drop outs, clicks or pops. One or more DPC routines that belong to a driver running in your system appear to be executing for too long. At least one detected problem appears to be network related. In case you are using a WLAN adapter, try disabling it to get better results. One problem may be related to power management , disable CPU throttling settings in Control Panel and BIOS setup. Check for BIOS updates. Please help. I even updated my network and the BIOS but nothing seems to solve this problem. Thank You.
  10. hey guys hope you're having a good time ! i always come to linus tech tips when i have issues out of my range of understandig .. i recently build a gaming pc and luckly everything is on point with it just today i started hearing a very tiny glitches in any audio i play so i googled my way to the issue ! the problem appears to be "latency issues " and i tried to understand what latency is and how to confront this problem but it's so complicated ! all i could get is latency is kinda a response time for a driver ! which means it is a software problem anyway my pc specs are i3 6100 gtx 1060 6gb msi z170 a gaming m3 psu corsair cx 600 i guess that's all u need ! i didn't install any updates of the motherboard drivers so this might be an issue (the pc was finished 4months ago ) -i do have the latest nvidia driver (nvidia is kinda related to the sound performane i guess) -my realtek version is : 6.0.1.7730 i hope my article is enough to get some help ! i thank you in advance and sorry for my terrible english it's not my first language peace ♥ edit: 1-the issue remains while using both the headphones and the speakrs (and the subwoofer) 2-i already installed DPC latency checker and indeed it shows very tall red bars like every 20 secs in a constant way (which means a very high latency is occuring if this is correct)
  11. Finally I have got my G.Skill Trident Z F4-3200C16D-32GTZA tested on ASRock X370 Taichi motherboard. Initially it would not work on any frequency higher than 2133MHz. Only with latest beta BIOS update 1.94A, I have got motherboard posted at 3200MHz memory speed. I had to change slightly timing as well instead of latency 16-16-16-36, I set 18-16-16-36. I do not thinks I have issue with my memory, probably have to wait for more BIOS updates. According information on Internet and multiply tests have been done by community, higher memory speed = higher frame rate in games. Looks like running memory at 3600MHz and CPU at 3.9 GHz-4 GHz gives Ryzen fighting chance against Intel i7-7700K in games if running them at lower than 4K resolution. It is not like I am concern about gaming performance much, just want to see how fast I can push it without going crazy on cooling. Would be interesting find out if anyone got higher than 3200MHz memory speed on Ryzen build pc's and what model/size memory has been used.
  12. As of last week, I've started noticing random stuttering in audio and occasionally video. This has made it close to impossible to watch any video weather it be on youtube or offline. I can't game or even listen to music without being interrupted. i've done some research on the topic and can't seem to understand what's causing it. I've run LatencyMon and it's given me the following output. Your system appears to be having trouble handling real-time audio and other tasks. You are likely to experience buffer underruns appearing as drop outs, clicks or pops. One problem may be related to power management, disable CPU throttling settings in Control Panel and BIOS setup. Low latency USB hub

I'm looking for a USB hub for some extra stuff as I only have 3 free ports. The only problem is that I would either be running keyboard and mouse through it, or a MIDI keyboard, all of which needs as little latency as possible. Looking around on the internet has had little yield, so this is my second option. My computer has thunderbolt support which I'm using for monitors, but there will still be plenty of space for several other thunderbolt devices, so maybe a USB hub connected via thunderbolt would work? Searching for one didn't help though as everything that came up was either a thunderbolt dock which have far more than is needed, or an adaptor that is either one thunderbolt to one USB, or just a regular USB hub. So does anybody know of such a thing? And what would you recommend? I need an extra 3 or 4 ports at the most. Thanks for any help.
  14. Hello good forum-members, I am about to build a new system with an H110 motherboard. Interestingly enough, the least expensive good-quality 1x8gb stick of memory I can find is a 2666MHz module; however, it has a latency of 15. Is there a way to, while "underclocking" to the 2133MHz limit set by the H110 chipset, also decrease the latency? Or is that hard-and-fast set? Thanks in advance!
  15. I have six 1080p ASUS gaming screens, and some crazy system latency when I plug more than two or three in at once. I use to run this same configuration on two EVGA 760's in SLI and a touch screen making 7 screens. I had similar latency with those cards. Sense upgrading to two 1080's in SLI almost nothing has improved other than the frame rate. I did a fresh install the other day and even with nothing installed but the video drivers I get the exact same problem. I run high quality DisplayPort cables for every screen. I have tried no SLI, single bridge SLI, and duel bridge SLI. Nothing changes. My system OS runs on duel SSD's in RAID 0. I don't play any games that span more than 1 screen. Mostly just work stuff and six EVE Online clients. One on each screen. Here is my setup. 16. Hello guys! I want to know what difference fastpath ,in a vdsl connection, makes. I searched a little on the internet about it but i dont know much around networking. I would really appreciate it, if someone could explain this situation to me in a simple way.
  17. So we all know that Ryzen loves fast RAM. But the question is, does it work better with fast RAM because of the faster clock, therefore giving it faster response time, or because the faster clock give it bigger bandwidth. If because of the bandwidth, would theoretically having 4x4GB configuration be better that 2x8GB. Thank you
  18. Hey folks, So, I have a little home studio I've been sort of building for a while now, and very soon I'll be getting a new pc since the roof fell (yea) and completely destroyed my Dell L502x (yes, it was old, but it was great.) the only thing left is to pick a sound card, but there's one problem, I'm from Brazil, so something that could cost relatively cheap in USA, like a Scarlet Solo, could cost up to 600 reais! For you guys to have a notion of how much is that, our minimum wage is about 900 reais. That being said, I still need some way Tl;dr: I'm poor, taxes in Brazil are insane, I need a low latency audio solution.
  19. Getting 30ms+ latency spikes every few seconds. PC lags everytime it happens and audio stutters aswell. Spent hours yesterday googeling, ended up doing SFC /scannow and chkdsk /r /f multiple times, but to no avail, and to no error messages. Also, when I try to find the driver to ms ahci storport miniport driver, I can't find one for Windows 10 or Devils Canyon CPU's. I only find this one for Windows Server and Atom based processers. Do I have a failing hard drive? They seemed healthy.
  20. I have this asus RT-AC66U router and an asus pce1300 wifi adapter. And theese are the ms im getting in 5ghz bandwith. Im like 2meters away from my wifi router and i have 30/30mbit connection. I tryed speedtest by ookla, with the wifi im only getting 10/10mbit. And with cable im getting 30/10mbits. Why is that ? Im thinking its something to do with the channel my 5ghz is on, what do you guys think ? Im not so good with wifi networking.
  21. I'm really hoping someone can help me. I'm pulling my hair out over this. I've done many things but can't seem to find a fix. (My apologies if this is in the wrong forum or I write too much, it's my first time posting here.) So, I recently made a mini-itx gaming build, and I purchased an ASRock Fatal1ty Gaming-itx/ac board. So, the first one I bought had audio pops and crackling. I use the green line out jack. It can happen immediately after it boots into Windows, 10-15 mins after, or sometimes not at all until I restart or turn it on the next day. (Which is why I thought I'd fixed it a few times.) After talking with ASRock support, they said it sounded like a hardware issue and to replace it. So I did an RMA through Newegg and the new board is doing the exact same thing. I have tried other speakers. Speakers using the line out jack always do the crackling. I tried my tv's soundbar with the optical digital and no problems. Disable that and re-enable the line out, it immediately starts up again. Now, if this helps, I put a cheap Gigabyte board in while the RMA was going on so I wouldn't be without a computer and with that board I had no sound problems whatsoever. (I no longer have the Gigabyte board). It's only with the ASRock boards in. I'm not sure if this could be a motherboard specific issue or not? Now doing further research, this appears to be a DPC Latency issue. I don't believe it to be a hardware issue as the same thing happened on two exact boards, but not on another brand? Here are the computers specs: ASRock Fatal1ty gaming-itx/ac Windows 10 64bit i7 7700k 16GB Gskill Ripjaw V ram ASUS Strix 980ti 850w Thermaltake PSU OS installed on Toshiba SSD Below are pics from two instances I ran of LatencyMon. (First ran Oct 17th and longer runtime on October 18th.) Processor State to 100%, Disabled USB Suspend Did a clean install on Windows 10 and installed no drivers other than Windows default installs (last thing I did) I think this is everything I did. I might be missing one or two things. I've been trying things for weeks. As it stands now, the bios is still on P2.20, all Windows default device drivers installed save for Realtek (none from ASRock site), audio enhancements off in Sound profile, power settings on Balanced profile set to defaults, GPU up to date Nvidia drivers, Wifi still disabled in bios. It seemed to be good for a day and a half, but it's happening again. Makes it such that playing games or listening to music/movies is a pain. I would be soooo grateful for any help. Thanks in advance.
  22. Well, the performance you get from your RAM varies according to your Speed (mHz) and the Latency (CAS in case). To you know the performance you get, you need to divide the CAS Latency by the Memory Speed (mHz) and multiplicate for 2000 (There is an picture explaining it better). To make things easier, I've made this calculation of all the frequencies of memories through latency, for when you buy your memory, know exactly which brings you more performance. The results are given in nanoseconds, lower is better. Enjoy it. DDR4 mHz by CAS Latency.xlsx
  23. Using the internet causes severe latency on my computer. I double checked software called LatencyMon. My fps, even when I am my desktop with nothing but a loading Wikipedia page, will drop significantly to 2-5 fps and my audio will get extremely choppy. This happens whenever I load a webpage, download certain software or games such as World of Tanks, or when Spotify loads new content. 24. Hey guys. I have a problem with DPC latency caused by nvlddmkm.sys (Nvidia drivers). I read a lot of threads about it but nothing i tried helped me fix it. Things i tried: - complete fresh OS - reinstalling every driver multiple times (older versions too) - disabling CPU throttling - no Nvidia HD Audio driver Without the Nvidia driver there is near no/normal latency Really hope some of you guys have more ideas. Thx for the help already Piet
  25. Hello, I have a quick question that I've tried finding a good answer to, but I'm not finding what I'm looking for. I have a friend that is upgrading the RAM in his computer. I'm not sure what exactly he is running, but it's something relatively modern, and the RAM slots are coded in 2 different colors (indicates dual-channel to me). He is currently running a 4GB stick (PC3-12800 with timings 10-10-10-27) and a 2GB stick (PC3-12800 with timings 11-11-11-28). I attached CPU-Z screenshots of those modules. He has these in the same color slots and I understand that in this configuration, it will use the timing of the slowest module. He is planning to get another 4GB stick (PC3-12800 with timings 10-10-10-27, link http://www.frys.com/product/7795018) and is planning on matching it in the same channel as his other 4GB stick and moving the 2GB stick (with the slower timings) to the other color slot. He doesn't have the money to buy a full kit at the moment and is making do with what he can find. I'm wondering if matching the timings of the new stick to the old stick in the same channel will allow one channel to run at the faster timings (10-10-10-27) while the other channel runs at the slower timings (11-11-11-28), or if all of the RAM will still run at the slower speed because of that 1 slower module. I appreciate any information you guys can give me. Regards, Vincent
