Hey guys, first post on the forum, but I think you will all really like this. So I browse Kickstarter almost religiously, about twenty days ago I noticed an item called, as the name of this post suggests, Guardian Hardware Monitor for gamers and custom desktop PCs. Naturally, I clicked on it, watched the video, and read the description. In essence what this is is a fan controller, LED controller, and hardware monitor rolled into one, and the way they've brought it together looks like it would be incredibly cool to use. So after following it for the twentyish days that I have, I've noticed that they aren't coming very close to reaching their goal anytime soon (at the time of this post $1,583 out of a $150,000 goal with only 34 days to go). So, I thought that I would bring it here to see if I could expose it to a community that may appreciate what it does, and so I could hear all of your opinions on it. Link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/919586016/guardian-hardware-monitor-for-gamers-and-custom-de?ref=users Note: I have not yet backed this project and am not affiliated with this company in any way. Also, since this is my first post, could you please critique it so I can improve in the future? Thanks! B_H_C

I first saw this concept through a video by Luke. It is a controller that is realistic, innovative, and will be ready around the same time as Oculus VR. This controller will be one, if not the best, controller for Oculus VR in the near future. Kickstarter Announcement Video Kickstarter Page https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1781631932/mad-genius-precision-motion-gaming-any-console-any?ref=category I am just hoping to promote their kickstarter. It ends November 15, 2014. I hope that this project gets off the ground. Thanks. -177

The last review I made was mostly a joke, so I’m going to do a serious review this time. I swear. This tiny little USB oddity is the Geek Out 720. Linus made a video about the Geek Out 450, but this is the more powerful 720. The model numbers come from the output wattage of each device. Now Geek Out is a product of Light Harmonic, a pretty well-known audio maker in the hi-fi/audiophile community. So when they began a Kickstarter to create a USB AMP/DAC that only used USB power and could play everything up to DSD, Head-fi of course lost their collective minds. I can’t even begin talking about this device without explaining Kickstarter to all those people living under a rock since 2009, but Kickstarter is a “crowd funding” platform in where people can throw money at various “projects”, including everything from hoverboards to potato salad. As you’ve probably already guessed, I’m a pretty skeptical person, and I’ll tell you right now I’m NOT a venture capitalist. That profession is not for the strongly purse-stringed or poorly financed, and I, my friends, am both. So It goes without saying I’m not exactly all about the new throw your money at strangers (sometimes MONTHLY) model of funding creative people and hoping you get your contribution rewards. So please read this review with the prior knowledge my bias against anything “crowd funded” is quite strong. The Geek Out features a 24bit/192kbps DAC and a 32bit/6.144MHz DSD DAC that is connected to an amplifier that features two separate headphone outputs. One has a .47 Ohms output impedance and the other has a 47 Ohm output impedance and thus doubles as a line out. On the side are two … buttons, but we’ll get to those later when I rant about the software. The case has a high quality feel and everything holds together solidly. For a device with this many features it’s certainly crammed into a very small and transportable container. Cramming, of course, will increase the heat output, and this device feels hot like a toaster after being plugged in for about 10 minutes. Included are an extension cable and a little carry pouch. It was easy enough to throw it into my laptop bag with all my other cables and doodads for my weekly travels. Now let’s shift to the important part that I wanted to talk about. The firmware. This is one reason why I haven’t written a review on this item until now. It simply did not work. Well, let me rephrase that. The volume control was outright dangerous to your hearing. This device in order to be fancy and new uses the UAC2 standard audio driver in Windows, Mac, and Linux. That’s a perfectly acceptable notion in Mac and Linux since the standard is fully implemented, but in Windows there is a bit of competition between the MASTER of the computer’s volume and the MASTER of the device’s volume. The resulting Windows driver bug makes it so anytime the volume on the GO720 is adjusted after a re-plug it’s re-set to MAX on the device side since the windows master volume takes over. At least that was LH’s story about the bug, as they explained on their forums. I’m sorry to say this sort of thing is simply unacceptable at any rate. (I never tried the DSD feature because DSD is stupid.) The good news is if you’re considering a device like this is that the problems have all been fixed. Or rather, the feature to control volume on the device has been removed in the latest firmware along with the “3D awesomefier” feature. The volume up and down buttons now only change the DAC roll off instead. So as long as you don’t mind installing drivers and upgrading the firmware, which I honestly found very easy, the device will become quite functional. My recommendation therefore is simple. If you like hassles and firmware upgrades on super-hot running devices, I’d give this little item a shot. Other than that I might have to tack it up along with all the other poorly managed and unfinished projects that have come out of Kickstarter in the last few years. Honestly, my advice on Kickstarter is much simpler to begin with – Never Once.

The next hot phone is getting Kickstarted! The NoPhone! It's basically an IPhone but better! It even includes an upgrade for a selfie camera. Basically it's a plastic block made to look like a smartphone and the "selfie camera" is just a mirror. source: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nophone-usa/the-new-and-unimproved-nophone

I stumbled upon this Kickstarter on my ghetto Icelandic "9gag" feed (www.b2.is) the other day and was... I would like to say that I was interested, here sitting in front of my 144Hz 3D ready screen and all, but truly all I felt was; "oh... 3D. Meh" Link to their Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kula/capture-the-moment-in-3d I don't know how you all feel about it, but what I make out of it is that they are either too late, or too small. By small I mean, who the he** buys something like this and actually uses it as they claim it can be used. The only scenario I feel where it could be applicable would be in teachings and amateurs trying to get into movies and stuff. Otherwise, 3D always requires some sort of a larger investment and physically attaching things to your head to actually enjoy the thing. And at that point, I don't think its worth it anymore. Imagine a scenario where you invite some of your friends over, and you have like this tablet like picture-frames that has a constant slideshow of your pictures, but now they are all in 3D. Guests would literally have to WEAR something to see it. Just... doesn't seem real nor practical. I fail to see any situation where this would be "cool", other than the classroom and educational experience, which apparently is not their targeted market? Nonetheless, I think its cool that the 3D market is getting cheaper. Perhaps someday it will be both practical and meaningful to enjoy it. Until then, Peter Jackson, just do 2D please

Alright, So I'm not sure If this is against the code of conduct but I just found an interesting looking kickstarter for a game called The Flood in The Flame. It's an indy game developed by some people who worked on Bioshock,Halo, and those plastic guitar games, and alone it looks like an interesting survival rouge like but the kicker is that it has a soundtrack by one of my favorite musicians, Chuck Ragan, So if this is your kind of thing maybe check it out, Don't worry about backing it, it's already funded. I'm interested to see what other games are worth kickstarting feel free to share.

Hello Everyone, Before I go further just so you're aware this is basically a promotion of a webseries and Kickstarter my friends and I are working on which has very little to do with technology. If you are easily swayed by stupid marketing techniques please keep reading My friends and I recently began working on a webseries called 'My Name Is Mulan' and we started a Kickstarter campaign to help us fund the first season of the series and would greatly appreciate any help that you could give. The webseries is a modern adaption of the classic tale of Mulan and we have talented people from all around Australia working on the project. We recently released the pilot of the series which you can watch below to give you an idea of what direction we are going for. Our Kickstarter campaign can be found here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mynameismulan/my-name-is-mulan-season-one The success of the Kickstarter will be what determines whether or not we'll be able to continue on with this project, so any donations; help with advertising and sharing with friends would be immensely appreciated and I'l give you an internet cookie. If you have any further questions about the series of the Kickstarter feel free to ask. *Sharing and helping us may or may not grant you an internet cookie* *As for the situation regarding some of our casting choices; I will paraphrase Ubisoft regarding the My Name Is Mulan Team. "This show is being developed by a multicultural team of various faiths, beliefs and race." Thank You.

Blink promises free HD home video surveillance. It's improvements are a battery with a custom chip that runs the device without wires for a year, no contract or monthly fee. Also, it has a little "unhackable" light that shows when it records. Check it out on kickstarter

A new product is comming. The "Airdog" is a drone to the Gopro cameras which does not have a controller, well kind of. With an app you can set up which areas it will not fly into. You can also set up some more controls (but I don't know what). The main thing is that it's tracking you via a wrist band, so you don't have to get a friend to steer it for you etc. It has been on kickstarter for some time now and has reached over a million dollars! They're ready for production and realeasing soon. Starting at 995$ are you excited?! for more info check these links: (sorry for bad english or grammar. Personal anti-drone warning system launches on Kickstarter
SinisterBagel posted a topic in Tech News
"Are you afraid your neighbors are using drones to spy on you through your windows? Then this Kickstarter project is for you. The Personal Drone Detection System is raising a modest $8,500 in order to test and produce a desktop sensor system that can tell when a drone is loitering within 50 feet. So if you're at work and someone flies a drone with a GoPro near your home, the system will alert you." - The Verge Personally I'd have to wait till drones are a little more mainstream and easier to get before I invest in something like this but it's a pretty cool idea. I personally have been waiting for a product like this since I first saw the Oculus Rift. They're asking for a funding total of at least $35'000 and there's only 29 days left after I post this so pledge now! I really want a consumer release of this!!

The Verge: Kickstarter’s next campaign So kickstater has made 3 major changes to it's platform: "The rules for creators have been simplified from about 1,000 words to less than 300 "Previously banned products are allowed back on the platform." "Projects can now opt to "Launch Now" and bypass Kickstarter’s approval process." It seems like they are making these changes to better compete with Indiegogo, which is less restrictive the Kickstarter. Though before a person can launch or get feedback their project is checked "for rule violations that could take as little as five minutes. That check will now be done by an algorithm that looks at keywords in the campaign, the creator’s track record on Kickstarter, and other metrics to create a profile of the project and compare it to similar projects that have been approved, rejected, flagged, and removed. If the campaign passes the algorithmic check, the creator can choose to either launch without a human review or request feedback from the Kickstarter team." This will greatly speed up the approval process and make things more efficient. How do you guys like the changes? Do you think they will help or hinder kickstarter? Do you think they shouldn't have changed?

Kotaku: "Lasertag With Swords" Means Pretend Jedi Can Finally Keep Score Kotaku Uk: "Lasertag With Swords" Means Pretend Jedi's Can Finally Keep Score Idk if this has already been put up on here, i looked but didn't find anything, but this look awesome and Linus/Luke need to get it for the new channel to play with. It is basically foam lightsabers that register when you hit the other person so it can keep score. There are even different game modes: ONE HIT TO WIN IT: Self explanatory. Land one successful body hit, and you win. COUNTDOWN: Land three hits to win. METERED DAMAGE: The stronger the blow, the more damage your opponent takes. ETERNAL STRUGGLE: Identical to Countdown, only you can earn health back over the passage of time, or by blocking several blows. HOPELESS: The name says it all. Identical to Eternal Struggle, only you can earn health back more quickly, and with even fewer blocks. Also, the lower your health gets, the less damage you'll take. Its already 150% funded with 11 days left if they get to $200,000 they will come with sheaths!! (for some reason this got stuck as italics, idk why)

Called the Legion Meter and set to cost $49 for anyone wanting to get in on the ground floor, the device plugs in in-between the USB outlet and the charging cable just like a dongle and then sets about working its magic. The upshot is a simple one; with the Legion Meter installed, your devices will charge faster. In fact, they could potentially charge twice as fast, which is an improvement not to be sniffed at. For devices that normally wouldn't get enough juice from a standard computer-based USB port to charge, the Legion Meter will actually allow them to charge as if they were plugged into a wall outlet. That means iPads in particular will be able to charge anywhere there’s a USB outlet, which is impressive enough in itself. For those that like to know what’s going on, the Legion Meter has an on-device display that tells you what it’s doing, and how much power it’s outputting. Here's their Kickstarter video https://d2pq0u4uni88oo.cloudfront.net/projects/915182/video-369844-h264_high.mp4 SOURCE: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/plxdevices/legion-meter-charge-your-smartphone-92-faster
