So im a photographer and im working with this 46 MP camera producing 41-53 mb files, my workflow consists on Photoshop and Lightroom, Firefox, iTunes + some other app at the same time, iMac used to do well with 16 mp sized images but these new 46mp files are just massive specially when converted to tiff and turning into 400mb - 3gb files on PS layers and stuff. Computer go Slow as s*** while switching between apps. (Though i'm using a 1tb hdd 7200rpm which i know it's not ideal for PS cache or saving big files but thats another lack of performance i know i'm not gonna get fixed) . So im thinking about a RAM upgrade but i don't know if this will turn my workflow at least a tad better, i know im working on a 7 Year old machine. Based on my research, Photoshop and Lightroom don't use so much GPU and the Processors on these Apps are used mainly to export-import, and i dont have any problem with these tasks (i ignore so much things about this, i'm sorry). I'm currently using the standard 8 gb of RAM coming out of the box, in case Ram benefits my case, should i upgrade to 16 (adding 8 more) or go straight 32 with brand new units? Thanks for the advice. iMac 27" Late 2012 (First slim iMac, entry level) Intel Core i5 2.9Ghz 8Gb 1600 MHz DDR3 memory Nvidia Geforce GTX 660M 512 1Tb 7200RPM Hard Drive

Our iMac review was pretty positive, but we got to thinking: If we’re going to want external graphics anyway, does a Macbook just make more sense? Well then folks. As the title suggests my goal lies in frankensteining a gaming rig into an old iMac 27" 2009/10/11 (the thicker one). I found a working LVDS-connector on ebay to access the iMac's screen and cut a couple of holes into the iMac's back to fit my GPU and AIO water cooling. It's not easy but I was able to cram in a full size ATX board (might buy a mini-ITX one soon-ish), GPU (GTX 960 via PCIE extension cord) and the water cooling as well as 2 hard drives and the LVDS connector boards. My problem right now that I don't seem to find a way of including the power supply (it's way too big and I can't find anything that would). The maximum dimensions I have if I don't want to cut open the Back for another hole would be 10 x 10 x 3,5 cm. My current solution is having the PSU on the outside and running the needed cables in through the old power connection hole. I also might've fucked around with my current PSU thus breaking my GPU so that setup might change sometime during the next 1 to 2 months (currently trying to decide between a vega 64 and rtx 2060) My main interest would be if any of you have an idea adressing the power supply. Are there any tiny ones with enough wattage? Also if I buy a mini-ITX motherboard which should I get? was thinking about MSI B450I and an AMD 2600x processor. My current setup is/was: Asus Z170 Pro Gaming Intel Z170 So.1151 Dual Channel DDR4 ATX Retail 16GB (2x 8192MB) HyperX FURY schwarz Dual Rank DDR4-2133 DIMM CL14-14-14-33 Dual Kit 600 Watt Corsair CX Series CX600 Non-Modular 80+ Bronze 4GB Palit GeForce GTX 960 JetStream Aktiv PCIe 3.0 x16 2xDVI/1xHDMI 2.0/1xDisplayPort (Retail) Intel Core i5 6600 4x 3.30GHz So.1151 TRAY wasn't anything special but it did me a solid job until now and was enough for my purposes in gaming and according to the occulus tool everything except the 960 is fine for VR which I kinda wanna get into soon. If I upgrade parts I'm mainly concerned that they're a solid choice supporting me for the next couple years like my old setup did. I don't need ultimate performance as long as it's affordable and keeps me company for a while.

Hi guys, I've just got a very good deal for an iMac - 21.5-inch, Late 2012 (2.7 GHz Intel Core i5) which I'm going to use to produce music (seems like music-wise iOS works better). The problem is that it feels a bit lazy and my ambition (as I'm not the biggest Apple fan) is to get the best of this unit at the best price possible. I presume that an SSD would help a bit, also more RAMs will help with using a few tons of sounds at a given moment but I'm thinking also of improving the BRAIN (CPU). What do you guys think that is the best option for this computing machine? I don't know, the best CPU to work with it? The best price-performance solution? Looking forward to hearing your suggestions. All the best, Andy, London, July 2019.

Hi. I am new so sorry if I do something wrong. I have a 2009 23inch Imac and I recently watched a YouTube video about Imac deaths and how you loose your data if my hard disk fails. I am worried that it may happen to my imac since it's old. Should I be worried about this? If so what should I do?

Details: I have a 2012 iMac running High Sierra, an Apple TV 3, and a Sony AV Receiver. The ATV is plugged into one hdmi port on the Sony. The iMac is also plugged directly into the Sony via tbolt->HDMI. Problem: Apple Midi controls are not showing I have any 5.1 (or 7.1, as the Sony does that) options. Note: both HDMI and the Apple TV (BeagleTV) show 2 outputs. Configure speakers for either doesn't give multi channel options. As far as i can tell, I should be getting those options, but I'm not. Can anyone offer suggestions?

So I have a late 2015 iMac that will not turn on at all. No fans, backlight, charms, lights, clicks, just completely dead. This happened overnight. Could it be a bad power supply? The computer was in an office environment where the building looses power somewhat often. Any ideas? I've got it tore down with the screen off and now I just want to know if its fixable. Thanks

So, long story short, I have a 21" iMac from mid-2011. The only reason I have that over a Windows machine is because of Logic Pro. The original specs had a 1 TB HDD and 4 GB of RAM, but I've since upgraded to an SSD and added 16 GB of RAM, because I could. My issue is, the CPU is serviceable, but with the newest version of Logic Pro, even my fairly small projects use enough of the CPU that anything bigger I try to expand to in the future will probably be too much. What I'd like to know is this: would it be possible to take my SSD (and the RAM) and build an upgraded/upgradeable "Mac"? I'm not concerned about form-factor right now, I just would like to know if building a Mac from the components I already have and upgrading from them might be worth it? I figure I might even be able to get a couple bucks from the iMac case and other components I'm leaving behind, but that's for the future. In order to give as much info as possible, here are some other details asked for in the pinned thread: 1. Budget & Location So my budget is not so much a number, but can I build something with more cost efficiency compared to upgrading to a whole new Mac. I'm in South Florida, though I'm not sure if any more specificity is needed here. 2. Aim I think the above covers this part. I'm not looking for a monster of an upgrade though, just better than it currently is. 3. Monitors I only plan on the one monitor, since I'll obviously have to buy one, but I'm mostly fine with a 1080p, unless a compatible 4k monitor is at the right price. 4. Peripherals I have peripherals other than a monitor, so this should be fine. And since I plan on using my SSD, the OS will already be there. 5. Why are you upgrading? So, again, this was mostly in my above statements, but I'm beginning research into the best way to not only upgrade my current Mac, but keep being able to upgrade down the road as well, not necessarily all at once. Also, I'm "tech aware", but have never built my own computer before. I figure this is good to know so you're aware that I'm somewhat knowledgeable, but not very experienced. Don't worry, I learn quickly. Thanks!

Hey guys, im having a pretty substantial issue here with my mouse and was wondering if it was at all possible that the hardware in my mouse might be causing it, vs the actual software of my computer. Right now im trying to do a simple calibration test for one of latest pickup games, CS:GO, and no matter what i do i cant seem to get mouse acceleration 100% disabled. I have raw input enabled and acceleration disabled in the game. Ive tried using the terminal to run the command "defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.scaling -1" and even resorted to downloading a 3rd party app "Extended mouse settings: Mouse Acceleration for OS X" the result im trying to achieve is pure raw input so if anyone knows a tried and true solution please let me know!

I have a late 2013 imac with thunderbolt 1 ( I think ) and was wondering if I bought a thunderbolt 1 to type c cable & used a ssd enclosure would it be faster than my internal 1tb HDD 5200rpm Link to my imac - I have the baseline model https://support.apple.com/kb/SP687?locale=en_GB What would be the best solution to have a faster hard drive as my imac takes nearly 2 minutes to boot. Thanks

Hi, everyone. I've been making posts about trying to find a good tech setup (for web browsing, game-play recording, media creation, and note taking) for a while, and I felt I almost had it with a $250 Mini PC, Monitor, TV, and Console. That was before Windows 10 went live with a new update that seem to make it so people can't change their default apps without attaching a Microsoft Account to their Windows 10 PC even if it is activated already. Now I've pretty much had enough from Windows, but Linux still doesn't have a user experience that I feel is good enough to use (Ubuntu, and Mint mainly, but I did try others and pretty much got the same result) so I thought I was SoL, but I had decided to get a iPhone SE in place of my next Android because I wanted a secure phone that could still use all the apps I want (Nintendo Switch Online, and LINE for example) so I didn't want to shell out $500+ for a okay-ish Samsung that'd still need a installed, and modified custom ROM. My time with my iPhone has been lovely (Having to learn a new UI aside the only thing I dislike about it is the lack of a "back" button which forces me to find a back button on the apps I use.) so I'm almost ready to dive right in, but there are a few more hick-ups I need to figure out. Like how to capture video from game consoles on MacOS - A lot of capture cards are Windows only, but I did find this one which looks good *1 and still works on MacOS, but it requires a lot to capture 1080p60, so I doubt I could get the footage I want from even the latest Mac Mini. I wanted to stay in the $400 range of Mac Mini for my next PC because I don't want to jump in to MacOS in case I hate it, but I don't feel good paying $400 for a PC that can't handle capturing (and recording) , or streaming at 1080p60. It was then I started looking at the iMacs. I don't like the idea of a PC being in my monitor, but the fact I can have a 4k display at 21.5 inches is making me wonder if I can find a way to make this setup work. My current setup that "meets" my needs is a lame 1080p tv, a Mini PC (BeeLink X45 Pro - which I don't like very much) a HP 22cwa monitor, and a Live Gaming Extreme USB capture card. The games I play are mainly fighting games, so I don't want a refresh rate on my display lower then 60fps unless it's caped by the game on the system, and lag can quickly become an issue too. My setup I am scheming is to get a iMac *2 that can handle capturing (and recording / streaming in) 4k, and just full screen the capture app to use as my display. I'm wondering if I really need stuff like an i7, and 16GB DDR4 2400 RAM to capture, and record 4k at 60 (or display at 60, and save/broadcast at 30)? If anyone who has a iMac, and Live Gamer Ultra can you help me figure it out? *1 = https://www.amazon.com/AVerMedia-Live-Gamer-ULTRA-GC553/dp/B07DHV47HF/ *2 = https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Retina-Computer-i5-5675R-QuadCore/dp/B07C87C9D9/

Apple's transition to ARM hardware hasn't landed yet, but the new 27" iMac was just refreshed. With obsolescence right around the corner, is there any reason you should buy one? Budget (including currency): £1200 Country: United Kingdom Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Video Editing, Light Gaming, Photo Editing, Programming Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Just watched the latest LTT video and saw Linus mention that Intel iMacs will only be supported by developers for 1-2 years after Silicon comes out - do you think this is true? I don't mind if Apple stops updating the software but what I really want to know is how long certain programs such as Premiere, Chrome, VS Code etc will be supported on Intel Macs for as I'm planning on buying a used 5K 2017 iMac but if it won't be useable for too long, I shall have to join PCMR. Thanks (If this is in the wrong section, please let me know and I will happily move it)

Hi, I want to turn my old iMac (early or late 2009, can't remember and I'm not at home, sorry) into a Linux office machine. I'll totally erase Mac Os and will probably end up using Lubuntu as it's running on my old Sony Vaio laptop and I'm kinda used to it by now. I checked the internet and found several how-to's. Main problem : as usual, most tutorials differ and I'm quite lost. eg: some tutorials such as this one https://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac/how-install-linux-on-mac-3637265/ talk about this step " Edit the line that begins with Linux and place the word "nomodeset" after "quiet splash". The whole line should read: "linux /casper/vmlinuz.efi file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper quiet splash nomodeset -- " While other tutorials make zero reference to any line to edit. Could anyone confirm if the Macworld tutorial is to be trusted? Thanks

I know that it’s a waste of time trying to fix a 2011 iMac, but I got this for free because it was broken and noticed it’s only a OS issue. I believe the issue is that a non-compatible version of Mac OS is on the iMac. I unfortunately don’t have an Apple keyboard and I tried to plug in a normal keyboard to try and fix it, but it doesn’t seem to get power (the numlock/caps lock lights won’t turn on). The keyboard I used was the one that comes with Dell pre-builts. I just need to get into Recovery mode, but I need a keyboard to do it. Any suggestions as to why the keyboard doesn’t get power?
