Hi - please don't kill me for asking about a mac lol - I have no where else to ask I'm in desperate need of some help. I've had a mid 2010 21.5" iMac for the past 10 years and it's given me no trouble at all. The day that I decide to sell it - the hard drive fails. To cut a very long story short, I'm replacing the hard drive and I need to know if it's possible to use adhesive strips (to reattach the display) which were designed for the 21.5" 2012 iMac on my 2010 model. Any idea?

So, this is a doozy of a situation and if anyone is able to provide any guidance on this I will be amazed A few months ago I picked up a mid 2011 27" iMac from the ewaste container at the transfer station. The previous owner was smart enough to take out their hard drive and ram before dumping it, but luckily I had some extra ram and hard drives lying around and popped them in. However, as I have never previously owned any Apple hardware, the hard drive that I ended up installing was from a laptop that I had that ran Windows 10. I have tried to look up ways to upgrade this computer to turn it into an absolute beast as it already had the I7 2600 inside, but every forum post and upgrade video guide is prefaced with this is the most powerful item that will mesh with MacOS, but I wanted to know if, as I am only intending on running Windows 10, if I can ignore that message. The Nvidia Quadro p4000 can be found in mxm type-b configurations from a few modern day gaming laptops, and this variation sells for around $150 to $200, which is well within what I would consider reasonable spending range when im already invested for a total of zero on this machine. If anyone knows whether this config would possibly work beyond the info from mac rumors that would be much appreciated, if not, fair enough cause this may just be a stupid enough idea to leave me being the only one to attempt it. Current System Info: Intel i7-2600 32 GB DDR3 Memory 2 TB HDD Storage AMD Radeon HD 6970m Graphics

Forcefully upgrading my grandfathers iMac with an SSD. -
My father was moving his office around and managed to knock over his 2012 21.5 iMac resulting in some cracks across the screen, none of these cracks took any chunks out and is basically just lines in the glass, does anyone have any expericane or suggestions in repairing the glass itself rather than replacement or new device, I was considering using some commercial windshield repair if I have no other option, thank you in advance.

Essentially, my 2013 iMac won’t connect to the wifi. It started randomly yesterday where the wifi suddenly disconnected (but would work on any other device, just not the mac) and when i tried turning on the wifi again it didn’t do anything. the wifi stayed off, and it doesn’t seem like it can turn on again

Hello Guys! This is my first Forum Post here, so bear with me please haha! So here is my unconvential Setup: I am running an imac 2017 27inch with the i7-7700K and a Radeon Pro 580 8GB Card and 8GB of RAM. I use Bootcamp with Windows 10 Pro to Play Halo MCC and CoD Warzone every now and then. The fans ofcourse run wildly with the Tiny unibody design. While playing warzone i sometimes Encounter a full Freeze of the machine wich is either (what i guess) just the game being still in BETA …. OR the iMac running too hot and thermal throttleing It could also be that i have not enough RAM because 8GB ofcourse is just Minimum to Play cod.... I don't know if a Computer can Freeze because it thermal throttles. Normally it just underclocks and Nothing happens as far as i know. Anyways, i just played a Little round of Warzone and let HWInfo run in the Background: The CPU Package sensor read 102 Degrees celcius max and every of the 4 cores read 99 Degrees the GPU was at 90 Degrees. The Question is now: can/should i reduce the temperatures? I don't think it's very healthy to run it this hot for often… I have already reduced my Settings drastically to just 1080p and i m getting way more than 60fps wich is max for the retina Display anyways. Before that i used it at 2,5k and everything on high with Steady 40-50fps Thank you guys and sorry for the Long text! ps dont hate me for not having a gaming machine, i mostly Play xbox one and use the imac for 3d Rendering, Lightroom and final cut :)

I want to keep this imac as a test Computer. If anyone can help that would be great. every time I turn it I rattles and I don`t know how to take the thing apart.

In my Dad's office, there is an iMac from mid-2009. I want to connect it to the internet and Amazon Photos so that I can digitize all the photos from the Mac. Once they're all in Amazon Photos, there's no real purpose for the Mac any more. I was going to consider erasing the entire thing and running Ubuntu/Linux Mint on it, but I could also just run them from a virtual machine and leave the Mac as it is. I know that old Macs can handle Linux without breaking a sweat, but is it something I should really do? Or should I do something else?

Hi, I'm kind of a noob with all the computer tech stuff, please continue to read after this At the moment I'm using a 10 year old macbook pro with final cut pro for my job ( video editing) It's time for a new one, and I'm thinking about a iMac because mostly working from home. The problem is I don't know what processor is best for my purposes. Do I really need the more expensive processor for video editing? It would be €325 extra 21,5 inch macbook pro 16GB DDR4 memory Radeon Pro 555X 2GB GDDR5 1TB Fusion drive memory Processor 3,6GHz quad-core intel Core i3 8th generation OR 3,2 GHz 6-core Intel Core i7 8th Generation with Turbo boost (+€325) Thanks a lot for your help guys! Cheers

So I have a friend who followed a yt tutorial and managed to run an i7 9700 om his ROG z170 board by some bios mod and hardware tinkering. He's been using it for the past couple of months without any stability issues. So this has me wondering if I can do the same with an old 2016 iMac and use a newer cpu on it. The problem is he says it might cause trouble in lower end z170 board. And as far as I remember iMacs use h270/h370 boards. Though Im not sure about it as I couldn't find anything online. So any thoughts as to if its possible to run 9/10th gen cpus on older iMacs?

I love that you guys took a look at some retro tech, especially stuff I grew up working with. My aunt is a (now retired) teacher at a private Lutheran school and she helped run their computer lab. We had a bunch of these iMacs when they were new and I remember helping her take them apart for troubleshooting and repairs. And now I keep a few on hand for fun. There's also a Low End Mac group on Facebook that's pretty active. If someone would like to join, we'd love to help you guys find an LCD screen that fits in here and get your project going. Just please don't gut this one, use an iMac that's already dead. But some error correction is in order here. Apple didn't use a CMOS or BIOS on those computers, that giant 1/2 AA battery (yes, it's actually called a "one half double A") was for the PRAM (parameter RAM) stored for their OpenFirmware. Yeah, OPEN FIRMWARE! You could boot into it and change settings directly if you knew how. Apple didn't want you booting these machines from USB, but if you're skilled with OpenFirmware, it could be done. There's actually some debate over which brand of batteries is decent enough to replace these in our aging machines. Next up, that CD drive is most definitely not SCSI. These computers don't use SCSI, not even externally. You can tell it's not SCSI because there's no jumpers or wheel to select an ID number. It's ATA (or PATA or IDE, whatever tickles your fancy) with a wider ribbon to carry some control signals and power, and then the narrow part below that is a normal width ATA cable for the hard drive. Apple System Profiler will show you a lot of good information about the hardware. While there were a few more that supported it, the last Mac to boot from internal SCSI (at least by default) was the Power Macintosh 9600/350. While the 9600 did run a PowerPC processor, it was older than the G3 in this iMac. And this wasn't even close to the last generation of PowerPC computers Apple put out. This was a model from about 2000, the iMac G4 and G5 were two newer generations that came out before the Intel transition to X86. Finally, also relating to the slot load CD, you can eject it by sticking a straightened paperclip into the right side. Those drives die with age, we have a few workarounds and repairs we've learned for them to keep them running. Now PLEASE come join us on LEM so we can help you with that mod!

I have a 5k iMac from late 2015 and I am wondering if there is a way to use it as a second monitor. It doesn't have to be ok with apple, I would be okay doing some hacking. I think this should be looked into, but I can’t find anyone trying to do this. Maybe from a lack of tech savvy people owning iMacs.

I have an iMac G4 that I have been meaning to fix for a while, and in that time, it was sitting on the ground (roughly 6 months) opened up, which I know is a bad idea. I just got the motivation recently to try and fix it, as I personally believe it is the best machine Apple has ever created. (still trying to figure our why I let it sit on the ground for so long if I think it's their best computer) Basically, everything is hooked up, which I have double checked multiple times, but it won't boot. If it's plugged in and the power button is pushed, the fan will start spinning, but nothing else happens. The hard drive might be spinning, but if so it's indistinguishable from fan noise. According to the owner, it has some version of OS X installed (10.4 I think? I got it from someone else as a gift, and I can guarantee that it worked before I took it apart 6 months ago, but I needed to replace the drive for some reason I forgot) and it should be able to boot from that. The thing I'm having trouble understanding is what the issue is. It doesn't make any sounds, and I can't get any signs of life from a USB mouse or keyboard. It appears to not be posting, and I can't seem to figure out why. I tried taking out all the RAM to see if that gave me an error, but it did the exact same thing, which is nothing. (except turn on the fan) I have also tried connecting it to an external monitor with no luck. In a few days I plan on digging through my stuff and looking for some way of connecting to the hard drive with another computer, something like an IDE docking station. I still don't think it's the hard drive because it's not even giving an error when I remove the RAM, but at this point it's still worth a try. I would love to be able to fix this machine, because like I mentioned before, I love the design of this machine. Thanks for the help!

I gave my old 2011 iMac to my parents when I went mobile with my current Macbook Pro. I previously installed a homemade "Fusion Drive" consisting of a Crucial M550 120GB SSD and the original hard drive (Seagate 500GB 7200.12 Barracuda) I went back for a quick weekend and checked the iMac, but it does a quite loud, repetitive noise (vroum, vroum, vroum...) every second, like some vibrations aren't being absorbed. Questions : - Is it the hard drive or fans? - How can I check the SMART status of the hard drive while it's still encapsulated as Fusion Drive? Is there some kind of Crystaldisk-like software on Mac for that? - As they don't need most of the storage, can I "decapsulate" the Fusion Drive to get everything on the SSD or do I need to reinstall everything? Not really a problem as I can use Time Machine to backup and restore the system anyway. The dissasembly of the drives is quite hasardous and I don't want to do it unless absolute necessity (and I'd need my suction pads), is there any way to completely shut down the hard drive without opening the iMac?

So I wanted to switch to Mac and I founded one used but cheap, iMac 21.5" mid 2011, it is in great condition, it has all papers and stuff he comes with (at least thats what the guy who is selling it says). It has 8gb of ram and i5 processor. I don't know anything about Mac so can anyone tell me what I need to be careful about, what I need to check and what should I have of accessories that came in box. Thank you!

I am going to start buying parts for my pc soon (still don't have all of the money xd) I am currently using a 2011 27" imac with a 2400, a 1GB HD 6970M and 12gb of DDR3 of 1333mhz RAM. Needless to say I need an upgrade to meet my video editing AND gaming needs. The only thing still good on this imac is the BEAUTIFUL 1440p IPS display. I mean, my uncle uses his pc for programming and watching movies and he has a $650 27" IPS monitor that this imac display that this imac display is just as good as. I was originally going to sell my current imac to pay for parts but than I heard that you can use your imac as an external monitor (Also, no one wants this outdated potato). I know you can use it with other imacs and macbooks but IDK about PC. I think you can use it with PC through displayport and maybe thunderbolt. Does anyone have any experience or know anything about this because this is an amazing 1440p display that could save me lots of money on a monitor (and would be better than a monitor I would be able to afford).
