Original article via the Wall Street Journal: http://www.wsj.com/articles/if-your-teacher-sounds-like-a-robot-you-might-be-on-to-something-1462546621 Article on the topic by The Verge: http://www.theverge.com/2016/5/6/11612520/ta-powered-by-ibm-watson Quotes from The Verge article. So basically, as I see it, this could drastically change how some forums work where there is a lot of question-answer conversations going on. A bot that observes any community enough could scan for questions and *accurately* respond to them if they're common enough. I think this is pretty great. And pretty crazy. And pretty scary. We may be talking with bots right now and not fully realize it.

Hi all, just found this out of no where but it looks extremely interesting. "IBM Japan recently announced a new project, Sword Art Online: The Beginning, a dream project that aims to bring the series to virtual reality." http://www.siliconera.com/2016/03/17/ibm-japans-virtual-reality-sword-art-online-project-gets-first-screenshots/ http://wccftech.com/vr-mmorpg-sword-art-online-beginning-screenshots/

Hello fellow LTTers, I'm just seeing how many other people use or are fans of ThinkPads. I personally use a ThinkPad T420 with an i5-2550m and Nvidia 4200m GPU.

Two years ago I found an old IBM xseries server chilling at a Goodwill (thrift) store. Off an on I've been working on getting it up and running, chugging in this, taking out that. Just today I got it to work, and is right now (at the time of me writing) downloading Ubuntu. Can't tell you how ecstatic I am to have finally got it working, even if it is a piece of crap in today's world. But, thats beside the point. Now I want to upgrade it! Here are the original specs Here's what I changed (more accurately, what made it work): No HDD, disc or floppy drives A 5-USB hub expansion through PCI A thumb drive I used to download Ubuntu, and a thumb drive I downloaded Ubuntu onto 2x1gb of ECC ram, PC3200. I can fit in another two pieces before I hit the system limit of 4gb. Question is, what can I do now? Obviously add more RAM, but what else? Upgrade the PCU maybe? -Jbax

IBM announced today they have figured out how to replace silicon transistors with carbon nanotube analogs. The full study is going to be published tomorrow in "SCIENCE" SO far this is only replacing the transistors, this is not an entire assembly of carbon nanotubes, so there are still areas that can be improved, and the nanotubes themselves can be shrunk down further as well. IF this scales up it could fill in some of the gaps for processor assembly and maintaining the performance improvements over time we have come to expect. Hopefully more info will come to light on the effects these new processes will have on power, heat, and costs. UPDATE: The full article is behind a paywall if anyone knows a location of the full PDF it would be appreciated. Looking at a potential model M keyboard someone has for sale locally, tonight. I can't tell from the picture if it really is or not (they are only advertising it as an "IBM keyboard new") and they're only asking $5. If it is a model M, it's a later one (90's) as it has the windows keys between the CTRL and ALT. I don't really care if it's not one of the original 84-91 models as long as it has the buckling spring switches. (and come on, it's $5! lol). It's also brand new, still in the box and wrapped in plastic. Will check the back for the "model m" and manufacturing date. And of course will check the key switches. My question is; were there any model M's made in the 90's that had the windows keys and still had the buckling spring switches? Here's a pic of it:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/04/10/us_intel_china_ban/ It seems the U.S. government doesn't like China becoming too powerful in the supercomputing space, and has placed a full-scale embargo against Chinese firms for all E5 and up Xeon and Xeon Phi post-Ivy Bridge. Nvidia cannot sell flagship Teslas either to Chinese clients. AMD is barred from selling its FirePro flagships, though currently its Opterons are not included in the embargo (well that's pride-bruising). IBM also cannot sell its Power 8 & 9 chips directly, though due to the OpenPower Alliance this could become a moot point if it works in tandem with Huawei to produce them outside the U.S.. This is far from an exhaustive list too. HP is banned from selling optoelectronic chips as well. This is so pointless too. It's not hard to make shell companies in the U.S. to buy and then ship them overseas. Honestly what is the point in trying to snub China this way? Intel's and Nvidia's stock also took a hit over the news. China has been hesitant to use U.S. products because they could have back doors it doesn't know about, which is why the U.S. government doesn't use Huawei products either and why Russia is investing in its own government-controlled ARM architecture. Still, this is the wrong response to such worries.

IBM has just announced that they are going to invest $3 billion over four years to create a new internet of things unit to solidify their efforts in the IOT space. For those who do not know what the internet of things is the general idea is to place sensors in everyday objects and to network them together so that everything becomes smarter and responds to the users needs. In the past these billion dollar units have grown into substantial platforms that continue to grow such as Watson analytics. The unit will include 2,000 consultants, researchers and developers who will be working on both the hardware and the software that powers it. The aims of the unit are to build: As reported by ZDNet IBM's move may be in response to other companies such as Cisco and General Electric making large investments into internet of things devices. IBM may have an advantage in the internet of things space over other competitors due to their highly powerful analytics and cognitive computing services which would allow IBM to analyse all of the information that is coming from the IOT devices more effectively. This in turn would allow IBM to attract more partners for their ecosystem. Source: http://www.zdnet.com/article/ibm-creates-internet-of-things-division/

So about a year ago I bought a new keyboard. Being the retro guy I am I purchased a board from Unicomp in the good old beige color scheme. (If you do not know who Unicomp is they are the ones who acquired the right/patent to make the Model M keyboards.) These keyboards feature the buckling spring switches that have been around forever and are built to last, not to forget they are nice and loud and in some cases louder than cherry MX blue switches. I absolutely love this keyboard and know that a lot of people don't even know this company exist! It is the keyboard built for they working man and if you don't like membrane and cherry MX switches I would highly recommend you give this keyboard a try. (Don't forget they are made in America to! F*** Ya!) I am not a sponsor of Unicomp in any way just a huge ass fanboy of there keyboards, because who does not love the 80s? Big f**king steel plate makes for good blunt instrument for killing. Hi everyone I live in Morocco, and needless to say, trying to find a decent mechanical keyboard is like trying to find a virgin prostitute, the only mechanical keyboards available here are an outstanding number of 2, the G710+ and the Razer blackwidow. I would have bought one of them if it wasn't for the gigantic price tag, or what i prefer to call, the gaming tax. Seriously the cheapest thing gets tripled in price when it gets imported here and I literally can't even, the g710+ is 350$ and the blackwidow is 400$ here. The other day i was lurking a market and i found a shop with countless Model M keyboards stacked one top of another, the guy (who doesn't know shit about what he's selling) asked around 70 MAD, or 10$ each. Should i buy this keyboard ? I've read everywhere that this keyboard is the very best, and i personally love loud mechanical switches, another thing is is it gonna work with the PS2 port on my mobo ? I am a ThinkPad user and i absolutly love ThinkPad laptops, Although over the last few years the standard ThinkPad has been changed and twisted to a way that most ThinkPad lovers don't like. So i would like to hear your feedback about ThinkPads, what you think should stay and what you think should be changed for the ThinkPad line of products. (This also includes other Lenovo or IBM products )
-
Thank the ThinkPad Gods Lenovo has seen the light physical buttons for all! According to Tom's hardware: "Lenovo told us that its customers were instrumental in convincing the company to undo the new (now old) larger touchpad design with integrated buttons. " http://goo.gl/F8MhbI This shows once again that customers do have power over certain things when it comes to products. now all that needs to make its return would be the physical buttons for the TrackPad. For me this is a non-issue as when not using a trackball or mouse I the TrackPoint as it it far superior.

A partnership between these two isn't as nutty as it sounds, Apple giving the ease of use know how to IBMs data centre skills to come up with apps for companies and even industries as a whole to improve consumer service across the board. So far, I don't see anything wrong that could come from a partnership like this. An example given was the airline one. We probably all hate flying, its laborious and can be a right pain the ass. What better way to streamline how customers get taken care of then with apps that plug into existing databases to actually allow your counter operators to do a better job, especially when most of the airline industry is still stuck in the 20th century in tech terms. http://techcrunch.com/2015/03/02/apple-ibm-partnership-sprouts-latest-set-of-apps-at-mobile-world-congress/

IBM have revealed that they are working on a 7nm chip in conjunction with GlobalFoundries, Samsung and SUNY(State University of New York). The development are set to push Intel in the Process war seeing as this is one of the first times recently that Intel have not been well ahead of they competitors. The 7nm Chip employs a type of silicone called silicon-germanium (SiGe), this type of silicon allows the transistors to be sub 10nm and still allow of electron mobility, this was previously a problem because regular silicon would not allow enough current through to make an effect. They are still using the standard FinFET transistor which is widely used in the commercial industry at the moment. They are now using UV lasers to etch the channels in the silicon, they are using an Argin Flouride laser which has a wave length of 193nm. The chip is said to have improved performance by 50% and also brought down power consumption by 50%. Although the technology is still in its infancy it is set to look very exciting, the chip is set to released for commercial use in 2017/2018 although the use of EUV lasers to etch the chips is not yet practical. Also with Intel running into problems with 10nm production at the moment we may see some delays. This has the potential to spice things up the processor market for the next few years and may even spur Intel to get of the arses even more and charge for the metaphorical hills of graphine. IBM may now take the place of AMD as the competition to Intel. As mentioned in the title, Episode 3 (with English subtitles) can be found on IBM Japan's youtube page now (https://www.youtube.com/user/IBMJapanChannel/videos). (note: "Cooking" is episode 1) The series explains how cognitive computing works (very simply), by explaining how Watson comes up with answers to the charaters' various dilemmas. Personally, watching the first two episodes made me want to look into what exactly "Cognitive Computing" is, and I assume that was IBM Japan's goal; to generate more interest in Cognitive Computing. I feel a bit manipulated, but reading some of the documentation on "IBM Watson Developer Cloud" ( http://www.ibm.com/smarterplanet/us/en/ibmwatson/developercloud/doc/ ) has been genuinely interesting, and I'm happy as a fan to see the Steins;Gate characters....being themselves(?) again. It's a shame there are only 4 episodes in total planned, but oh well.

Folding for android For the first time, anyone with access to an Android-based mobile device can help scientists perform the critical research that is needed to find a cure for the ebola epedemic,The Project is courtesy of IBM & Scripps Research Institute & is being called "Outsmart Ebola Together" The software used for screenings in the Outsmart Ebola Together project is called AutoDock and AutoDock VINA, developed by the Olson laboratory at TSRI. IBM's World Community Grid has successfully run other projects that search for drug candidates for both high and low-profile diseases such as AIDS, cancer, malaria, Dengue fever, and influenza. It has enabled multiple breakthroughs, such as helping the Chiba Cancer Center in Japan discover seven new drug candidates to fight childhood neuroblastoma. The project basis is not a new terminology for us, the basic overall procedure is the same as Folding @ Home, except this would be the first time it's been introduced on to a low power processor such as a mobile device, This citizen science effort is possible through a partnership with IBM's World Community Grid, which has been making similar data-driven health and sustainability initiatives possible for 10 years as a free, philanthropic service to the science community. As of now anyone can download a safe and free app that will put their devices to work when the machines would otherwise be idle. With their collective processing power, the computers will form a virtual supercomputer to help The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) screen millions of chemical compounds to identify new drug leads for treating Ebola. Meanwhile, the devices will remain fully available for normal use by their owners. The Scripps Research Institute(TSRI)also invites members of the public to support Dr. Saphire’s crowdfunding campaign at www.crowdrise.com/CUREEBOLA to secure resources needed to analyze the enormous volume of data generated by Outsmart Ebola Together. Crowdsourcing this citizen science effort will dramatically accelerate the process of identifying a cure. if you register your tablet, smartphone or computer, the system will add you to the list of 680,000 volunteers and nearly 3 million devices. a sensational news , Do post your thoughts & comments down below.. & to get started you need to register at this: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ give proper details later download the App (for mobile/tablet & PC) Then carry on with application install & the rest will be done by the app in th background Original Link: http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/45594.wss Other links: www.crowdrise.com/CUREEBOLA http://www.scripps.edu/ http://www.citizenibm.com/ http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ News Link: http://www.engadget.com/2014/12/19/ebola-scripps-ibm-world-community-grid/

Moar expensive stuffs . . i'm looking forwards to your angry rant on this image According to the recent data from IBM Digital Analytics Benchmark our beloved Apple users outspend Android users on their online shopping. The "News" was reported by CNN. Apple users are 3 times more likely to make a purchase on their mobile or tablet device, and made up 25% of total online sales on Thursday. This is despite the fact that Google's operating system is the top smartphone platform in the U.S. market. As more retailers launched their Black Friday sales a day early, shoppers realized they didn't have to leave their house or be in front of a computer to score a deal. Half of all online shopping on Thursday including browsing was done on a mobile device. according to the most recent data from IBM Digital Analytics Benchmark.Apple iOS mobile users spent about 25% more than Android owners on their thanksgiving purchases, with an average of $118.57 per order compared to Androids users $95.25 per purchase According to initial results from Adobe, Black Thursday sales made on smartphones and tablets came in at $254 million , Sales slowed down as the day continued, as earlier reports showed the average order value of Apple iOS users came in at $122.08 and $97.25 for Android users. pretty interesting News imo, Do leave your thoughts on this down there beloooooe...
