  1. 1st post, please be nice... I'm currently running an OG HTC Vive and would like to install the Vive Wireless system for it, I've found New Old Stock and Refurbished Stock of the wireless kit that includes the attachments and cables for the Vive. However, I've been reading some old posts that there are some compatibility issues with the HTC Vive Wireless kit on AMD Ryzen CPUs. Anyone running anything similar with any kind of success, or aware if the issues have been sorted? System: Asus TUF B550M-Plus WiFi AMD Ryzen 5 5600X EVGA GTX1070 Black Edition 500GB NVMe SSD 32GB RAM
  2. me and my roommate are trying to both get our VR setups going in our living room (only room with enough space for VR). and i can find post of people saying its possible but no actually breakdown of how they got it to work any insight or tips would be greatly appreciated
  3. So, to make a long story short, I have a first-gen HTC Vive with the wireless kit, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to play with it in the living room without having to move my computer out of my bedroom every time. I've looked at getting an extension cable for the WiGig antenna, but everyone online says that, even if I were to get a good-quality cable, I can really only hope to get a about 6.5 feet max before the signal starts getting too degraded for the PCIe WiGig card to detect anything. So alternatively, I've been looking at getting a 1x to 16x PCIe riser card like this and giving it a go with a 20ft male-to-male USB 3.0 cable (as opposed to the ~2ft long one they tend to come with). I'll admit, it sounds like a very sketchy plan, but enough people on Reddit have reported success for me to be willing to try it out for myself. The part I'm hung up on though is that I don't know how I'm going to power the riser card once it's 20 feet away from my computer and power supply. From what I've seen, molex and 6-pin PCIe connectors are the most common standards for powering these things, and just about every one comes with a SATA to 6-pin or SATA to molex adapter respectively. But short of literally just buying a used PSU off someone on OfferUp and jumping the 20-pin connector to take advantage of its molexes or 6-pins, I'm stumped as to how to deliver power via either of those standards. I've found some wall-to-molex power supplies like this on a few different websites, but none of them really inspire a lot of confidence in me, especially once I start sorting the reviews by most critical. And the ones I've seen that go wall-to-SATA weren't much better. So, does anybody have any pointers as to what I should try? The Vive WiGig card doesn't need a whole lot of power to function, but I A. don't want to buy a new one because I trusted a sketchy non-standard power supply, and B. don't want to just have a whole entire computer power supply just hanging out in the living room or hallway for no other reason than to power a little PCIe riser if I can help it.
  4. Hello, I have big heavy gaming rig. But after the birth of my baby I am not using it, other than backup purposes. It has HTC vive wireless Pcie card in it. I want to change it to a mini pc, with ryzen cpu g series, without any extra graphics card. Or a laptop if I find a cheap gaming one. Hence it won't be so heavy. How can I plug my HTC vive Pcie card to them from USB3 port? Any ideas?
  5. Wondering what the best for full body tracking. My gpu is the gigabyte eagle rx 6700 xt and I would be playing Vr chat and racing games through steam vr. If you know any better headsets feel free to let me know. Thanks!
  6. so I've never had any vr headset, and planning to buy one, knowing the fact that new headsets are all sold out, and my budget is about 500 eur, I thought of buying something used. And I found someone who sells OG htc vice for 400 eur, considering new one costs 600 and I won't get anything new for at least 2 months (that's the time I mostly spend in home cause of quarantines) I'd say its pretty good deal. He said there are no defects (except that the 3-1 wire someday will break cause they usually do) but he has been using it for 2-3 years, and knowing this vive has been used for a long time and its one of the first gens, gets me scared. P.S. One more question will my PC be able to run simple games like super hot, beat saber with a 1050ti mini? tbh i don't know if I should post this here, if there is forum in ltt for VR gaming or something like let me know, thanks
  7. I’m building a VR headset and I would like to know if anyone knows of a way to mount a webcam to the headset and have it detect the motion and simulate mouse movements I have 7 webcams I’m willing to use so if I need multiple that’s fine
  8. Some TL:DW: No HL3 news. Slight showoff the new "knuckles" controller. Not interested in AR, they're fundamentally different. Sales are good. Valve working on 3 full length VR Games The tether is annoying, Wireless addon 2017 Wireless integration 2018 Hardware manufactures (they mention displays specifically) happy to help now that the market is more proven. Tech is there today where the next few generations will see much higher resolutions at upwards of 200hz Overall VR is a success, although the current install base is low, the game developers are making profits ensuring a healthy future
  9. I have decided its time to build a pc ( this will be the first time i completely built my own pc ) I plan on using this pc for vr ( HTC Vive ) https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/kjjwHN i have a few questions: firstly what mother board would you guys recommend, ideally i dont want to spend more than £110 ish secondly would the Intel Core i5-7500 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor be better than the cpu ive picked thirdly is there any thing that ive missed that there would be a problem
  10. I have been kicking this idea around for a few weeks, but last night I sat down and actually did put something on paper, and I’m looking for some feedback from you guys. As a HTC Vive owner I have been lugging my desktop tower around to give Vive demos to family and friends. This is obviously not a great solution and I know there are VR ready laptops out there but I had an idea for a different solution. My idea was to build a computer into a pelican case that also has room to store all of the Vive parts. So I came up with some parameters for this project. 1. Must be mobile enough to fit into someone’s car for transport. 2. Must be able to store everything needed to run the Vive. 3. Minimal setup once at location. 4. One Power input via D-Plug or Edison lead coming out of the case. 5. Durable enough to be moving around constantly. 6. Easily up-gradable. 7. Included monitor and additional Video output for plugging into external displays if necessary. Hardware I want to be able to build this system as cheaply as possible with the ability to upgrade later so I spec’d an Intel i5 a Micro ATX motherboard 16GB of RAM and a modest 500w power supply. I have an original GTX Titan laying around from before I upgrade my primary machine so I threw that in there. For storage I’m just going to throw in a 500GB or 1TB SSD. · Intel Core i5-4590 3.5 Quad Core · MSI H81M-P33 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard · 16GB DDR3 Memory · 500GB to 1TB SSD · 4x 120mm Fans I created a wiring diagram so I could wrap my head around all the hardware and how it needs to connect together so I could keep that in mind while placing the components in the case. Case Since I want this to be mobile and durable I’m looking at a Pelican Storm case. After throwing all of the hardware I had chosen into Sketchup I modeled the foam inserts from the original Vive case and put it all together to figure out what size case I need. I settled on a case from Casebuilder.com that matched my space requirements nicely. http://www.mycasebuilder.com/skb-3i-3019-12-custom-foam-case.html It’s not small but it has plenty of latches, and can roll so I think it will work nicely. I started modeling out all the foam, added a power strip to fulfill my 1 power plug criteria and put in a faceplate to hold the fans and make the unit a bit cleaner when in use. I added a generic monitor model to the top of the case that will hopefully be mounted in the lid. I added a couple places underneath and next to the foam inserts for storage of other accessories (mouse, Xbox controller, lighthouse power cables). I want to cut as few holes in the exterior of the case as possible but I realize that makes ventilation difficult. I have 4 fans on the faceplate the idea is for the three in the back to be intakes and the one in the front to be exhaust. Since I only need a couple specific ports available when the system is in use the motherboard/graphics card IO is hidden under the faceplate and would be plugged directly into the correct hardware under the faceplate. The Vive breakout box sits flush with the faceplate for easy access, and I want to also have a custom IO plate for HDMI, USB, power button, and status lights. Here is the part where I want some feedback. I have built a couple of computers from scratch before but this is a whole different beast. I still have a lot of things to work out but I wanted to see what you guys think. My biggest concern is how I’m going to mount all the hardware. I want the case to be foam lined for durability but then how do I mount the motherboard and graphics card? Should I put long studs through the foam and bolted to the case, or do I somehow attach it to the foam itself? I know that the graphics card is going to need some sort of support, or it may need to be moved away from the motherboard with a PCIE extender. I think the monitor can be mounted to the lid using the Vesa holes bolted directly to the case. I want your guy’s help on this here is a dropbox with all my files so you can take a look.(Mods if this is against policy please remove, I didn't know of a better way to share the files) I look forward to your ideas and comments.
  11. I'm just curious to see if we could use a dedicated subforum for VR stuff. Hang me if you must.
  12. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/xT4DNN and buy a Cheaper pc and an htc vive to run it on? I doubt it but maybe there are some options out there.
  13. My Story: I recently started earning some money this opens up a lot of new perspectives for an otherwise rather poor student. I had tried the Oculus twice at Gamescom 2016 - both times in sitting position - and was utterly unimpressed with what I saw. This and the price were reasons why VR wasn't very interesting to me until recently. I saw a review of the Pimax 4K and tried and HTC Vive at a local store - this time in a standing position - and "oh boy!" that was so much better. I thought: The Pimax could be it, my perfect cheap entrance to VR. Luckily I even found one on ebay for 260€ from a guy who got a Vive for christmas so he never opened or let alone used his Pimax. I went ahead and bought it. It was and is still interesting but I keep running into limitations. It is either the missing appropriate tracking (Pimax only has 3 axis tracking) or some other technical quirks of the glasses I don't want to get into right here. In conclusion I got a first look at VR on the cheap. Currently I am trying to sell the Pimax again and considering either getting a Vive or a Rift but i am not sure. I also had another taste of the Oculus Rift - this time standing - and it didn't feel worse than the Vive though there were mutliple weeks between trying both (adda grain of salt here). Since I now have the cash but not the knowledge I need to make a conscious buying decision I came here to ask you some things and compile what i found out so far. There are some pros and cons and I don't feel like luke has said enough in his month old "final answer". Do you personally have experience with both or any of these and can help me with this? Please leave a suggestion! (Notes: I have -1 on each - myopic that is - on each eye so without glasses is usually fine but I'd prefere to fit them in there I'd generally prefere not to support Facebook since i do not agree with a lot of things they do. I might be able to completely overlook that though if someone comes up with the ultimate feature of the rift I forgot I also don't like the exclusivity since it locks people out of games in an already small industry rough measuring I have couch to desk 2 meters and wall to the middel of the room 2.5m-3 meters of space (3770k @4.6GHz and a GTX 1080 should be enough power) So far I know (open question are marked in bolt - Feel free to add some to these if I forgot about something): Oculus: Way cheaper at 499€ from amazon + 119€ for the Touch controllers for a total of 620€ Shorter, thinner cable smaller FoV looking through a porthole feeling. On first impression text can be read easily, more easily that with Vive (subjective feel) lighter headset Removable headphones but not advised since stock sound is pretty good though I Comes with an X-BOne Controller Touch controllers are more ergonomic and pick up gestures better Controllers take AA batteries not yet sure if that is a good or a bad thing (claimed 30 hour battery life) Cams are "only" 69€ which i consider an ok price lighter controllers 4m long headset cable. Seems just long enough for my purposes Needs 4 USB ports, 3 of which have to be 3.0 ... srsly? 2.5m Cable for the cams - more bad than good. I am also missing unoccupied USB Ports: Should i get an PCIe extension for some more? Seems to have a lot more (partly exclusive) games than Vive (help please) I have no idea how good or bad the tracking really is when used in room scale mode Comes with a Remote o_O wth is that for? What games does it come with? The 6 listed on the Oculus website? (here:https://www.oculus.com/rift/) Robo Recall is included with the Touch controllers It Seems harder to clean than the Vive- specifically the headset's pad. Is that correct? How has your experience with their store and software been so far? Vive: starts at 899€ Controllers have proprietary batteries which are at 960mAh not even that large bulky 5m tri-cable solution (There is a separat 3to1to3 cable solution which costs 45€ or is that included nowadays?) uses only one USB 2.0 port heavier headset Higher FoV but also more screen door effect, harder to read text. More immersed feel (my subjective feeling) no included headphones, headphone strap available soon Additional lighthouse sensor is 150€ Additional controllers can be purchased but are 145€ has the cat cam though I don't have any livestock in house that I could step on, lul comes with 5 meh games as far as I can tell. (Subjectively I consider job simulator-like only meh) comes with in ear headphones though I will probably not use them since I have DT880s or Hifiman Re400s On steam are considerably more games listed that support the Vive though that doesn't say anything about a singular game's quality heavier controllers Are the Vive trackers (coming soon) any interesting for a consumer like me? How has your experience with their store and software been so far? I will probably have to add points later on but this is what is on my mind for now. The dilema basically is that I liked the roomscale-ness of the Vive but don't actually have that much room and the Oculus is 270€ (maybe 200 with a third camera subtractred) cheaper than the Vive but I think contrary to to so many things Oculus and Facebook stand for in the industry AND to add insult to the injury the Touch controllers really are better than the Vive Controllers. HALP ME PLS!
  14. I am looking to get either the rift with controllers or get the HTC Vive. My problem with the Vive is that there don't seem to be as many titles for it and with the oculus controllers coming out it may become more difficult to play them through the HTC Vive (yes you can play oculus games on the Vive). My problem with the oculus it that it uses an inferior tracking implementation. I also am looking to make my own content and it seems as though the vive is easier to develop for.
  15. I just got back from Steam Dev days the other day and I'm surprised nobody's posted this on here yet. At the event, Valve was prototyping a new virtual reality controller. I did not get to personally try it (there was a pretty big line), but I did get to see people using it. It attaches to the hand like a clip so that you do not have to constantly hold them. There are also sensors that detect if your hand is open or closed. Supposedly, it is capable of tracking individual fingers. Those who got to use them say they're much more comfortable than the Vive's controllers and even venture to say they're more comfortable than Oculus Touch. There is no word if this is going to be apart of next gen's headsets or if it'll be released as an upgrade for current Vive owners; or even if it'll be released at all. The controllers hold on nicely and the straps are supposedly only there to make people comfortable with throwing their hands around. http://www.roadtovr.com/first-look-at-valves-new-vr-controller-prototype/
  16. I am planning a VR content creation build around the X299 platform and a was wondering what would be the optimal graphics card setup for around 2000$. I was thinking in the beginning to get a quadro and call it a day but I feel like I'm not getting my money's worth. After a bit of digging I heard that a Radeon pro wx7100 paired with a rx vega FE would be a better deal. I will be using mainly unreal engine. If anyone is familiar with this topic and could help me would be greatly appreciated!
  17. Hi I want to put my Base stations on the ceiling but don't want to drill them in right now. What is that super strong velcro Linus uses? Or any other good methods please
  18. So the HTC vive is $799 CAD on Amazon, and the Oculus rift is only $548. Both come with the touch controllers (the vive also comes with 2 base stations) but is it really worth the $250 price premium? I have an open space that I can use it in along with a PC that can run it all, I want to get the vive but I just can't seem to see why I would drop the extra $250
  19. So i've seen things about cheap full-room vr stuff. I've seen one solution using a program called trinusvr to stream your screen onto your phone and your phone's gyroscopic data to your computer. There's also an option for position tracking, which apparently allows for a full-room vr experience using cameras and led's. Pair this with some tracked controllers and you may be able to get a htc vive-ish solution for vr! It might be an interesting vlog-style video. Please bump this if you agree!
  20. So far I'm not having any luck getting an HTC vive on eBay at a reasonable price. In my area there's a dude that's selling an oculus rift with the touch controllers and a 3rd sensor for $500 on Craigslist. (my budget is $550 btw) I know what you're thinking, "you can't trust anyone on Craigslist and you'll get scammed". Okay? The same could go with eBay too. I'm going to have him test it at my place to see if everything works. I don't feel like waiting for shipping and taxes atm so idk. I used to be leaning towards the Vive with its great tracking, but the price is just too steep. And the controllers are weird.... Any suggestions or advice? I'm using this for VR game development and a few productivity projects as well.
  21. I'm really trying to decide, I've been wanting to develop VR games on Unreal Engine 4. I've already had a project going on and it seems really good, I just can't test it lol. I'd might use virtual desktop too and a few games. My budget is $550 ish. (USD) I'm leaning more towards the HTC Vive's tracking, but I'm hearing all these problems with it not working. I have a huge living room where my PC is so it would be great for room-scale VR. I've already got a few bids going to the HTC Vive on eBay from trusted sellers and whatnot, since I can only afford a used HTC Vive and WILL NOT spend more than $600 USD. The Oculus seems promising, but the 3rd sensor still needs to be connected to a USB port for room-scale support, which my girlfriend would not appreciate and would much rather have the Vive's lighthouses' cable's being tethered down the window frame to the wall outlet. (Jayztwocents style) I do like the Oculus controllers though, and the price. I'm mostly worried about some issues people have been having with the Vive being buggy and whatnot. Any suggestions? I need help! Thanks!
  22. I see a lot of pretty decently priced HTC Vive's from Developers that had the pre-version and are just trying to sell them for about $500 USD. They're from trusted sellers with really positive feedback and have been selling on Ebay for more than 3 years. Should I go for it? Can I return it if it arrives broken?

  24. Why is there no forum specifically for VR? It seems like a must-have category for this site given the number of videos based around that topic on the LTT YouTube channel. Most VR questions get posted in General discussion and people who need support with their headset get lost. I know it would have been nice to have a community to go to when I was setting up my headset the first time. If there is a thread somewhere about this already feel free to remove this post but I couldn't find one.
  25. Steam Hardware Survey: http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/ Related links for June 2016 survey: 1. http://techreport.com/news/30349/june-2016-steam-hardware-survey-now-with-more-vr 2. http://www.gamespot.com/forums/system-wars-314159282/the-problem-with-using-steam-hardware-survey-31426163/ 3. https://zerolives.com/article/EwCL5SVB/steam-hardware-survey-shows-virtual-reality-headset-sales-stagnate As I've seen @LinusTech and Luke comment in videos that VR use appears to be stagnating. I just wanted to point out something. I just took the STEAM January 2017 hardware survey this morning. I have a HTC Vive. However, unless the device is connected and powered on the Steam Survey simply does not detect that a VR device is connected. Therefore any news stories based on the Steam survey stats - on VR are completely distorted and wrong. It should be a user question like the microphone question you have to checkbox. Since the VR device is a USB powered device and these are not always connected for obvious reasons (I store mine in a protected foam lined box to protect from dust). Just wanted to bring this up. As no doubt there will be comments in the news and on WAN show about low uptake (Luke has commented about this) but the Steam survey is fundamentally flawed getting data on VR usage and uptake or sales (!)
