  1. (English is not my main language so some terms might be off) I bought two used 1TB WD Caviar Green HDDs online. One of them works just fine. The other one appeared in the File Explorer without a usage bar so I thought a format would solve it. Formatting got stuck at 100% for around 15-20 minutes and eventually failed and the drive didn't appear in File Explorer anymore. It's still in Windows Drive Management and in Device Management so I guess no Hardware problem is happening. Device management shows the drive as Unknown and Not Initialized but also fails to initialize it regardless if I choose MBR or GPT for it. Third party partition managers dont report the drive at all either so no MBR reconstruction is possible inside Windows (withing my knowledge). I got Gparted and got to boot into it but can't trigger MBR reconstruction there cause I don't know the commands for it without a drive letter. Some help would be great. Thanks beforehand. (It's the WD10EARS)
  2. So I had an HP laptop and once it stopped working, I decided to build a pc. The build went great but once I found a hard drive enclosure and decided to test my old computer's drive and ram, it worked perfectly. I used the ram in my sisters laptop to increase it from 4 gigs all the way to 12 gigs (yes i swapped the 1 4 gig to the matching set from my computer) and it runs wonderfully. I also decided to use the laptop's hard drive in the computer so that I didn't have to buy another drive, didn't have to buy another windows license and could keep all my data. At first there was an issue where the Intel Bluetooth and graphics drivers kept installing but a clean install of windows fixed that pretty well. However, the computer still recognizes itself as HP made when my motherboard is MSI. It even retained the model number of the original laptop and gives me the HP support website. This hasn't caused any issues yet and the computer runs perfectly fine, but I just wanted to know how to fix it, if it can cause any issues, and if so, what those issues could be. TL;DR : I took laptop hard drive and put it into my pc It retained all the info from the laptop The support number + model are all the laptop's I'm not sure if this will cause any issues (Yes I did a clean install of windows) Specs : MSI B450 Pro-VDH Max AMD Ryzen 3500X WD Green 120Gb NVMe SSD Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 2x8Gb Adata XPG Spectrix Thermaltake TR2 550W PSU The drive in question : HGST 7K1000-1000 OS Specifications : Edition : Windows 11 Home (Dev build) Version : 21H2 OS Build : 22000.100 Pics of the comp thinking its HP in settings : I really don't want to break my pc bc I cheaped out since I wanted to keep my data, windows license and 1Tb of storage Also this computer is almost 6 months old and this was happening in windows 10 as well
  3. So i casually updated my windows 10 and it took unusually long considering my system is in nvme. when it finally booted everything seemed normal untill i see no programs games or anything outside local c drive(nvme) are showing up went straight to disk management no drives except one, i have 2 hdd and one other ssd. went to bios it shows all drives are connected everything seems normal, tried updating and uninstalling amd sata controller(ide ata/atapi controller ) from device manager. plzz help im confused i have found nothing about this in the internet... Thnx in advance
  4. When i start my computer the screen is black for like 5 - 30 seconds and then the lock screen appears. Is it because of a slow hard drive?
  5. I recently added a HDD on my laptop which is running Windwos 10 on SSD. I would like to know where it is good for the Desktop folder to be placed ?? Thanks..
  6. Hi, I know these kinds of questions are always asked and I've read a lot of them, but I've never found an answer to my specific use case (so I thought I'd ask for some advice) I have a HP Prolient Server (Something I bought on eBay for pretty cheap, and I know a standard PC would've done the job but I also kind of wanted to learn server hardware, anyway...) basically I want to know the best storage options for my use case which is, a place to backup and access my files, and that's it, however, I don't want the server running 24/7, I want to start it up at the beginning of the day and have it running so I can access files whenever I need them, and then towards the end of the day (or really anytime/on command), have any changes I made backup onto another drive (so instead of using RAID, just have a backup of a backup, etc.) and then once I'm finished, be able to turn the server off at night and then repeat. Sorry if my idea either doesn't make sense or is a bit risky, but I just want to know what drives would be best for this use case, and really, how I could go about doing something like this, any advice would be great, I should also mention that cost is a bit of a concern, so please note that I'm not willing to spend hundreds of £££ on storage. (Just a simple backup storage server) Thanks.
  7. Hey there! First post on this forum. I just built a new PC myself and have a Seagate Barracuda 2 TB drive located in the bottom of my case (Phanteks P500-A DRGB) and when the drive ramps up I can feel the vibrations throughout my desk and it gets very annoying as I can constantly feel it when using my mouse and keyboard. I was a first time builder and the instructions included in the phanteks case weren't very clear with how to mount Hard drives but I did not see any rubber washers or anything to prevent this vibration. So if anyone is familiar with the case and can help me with mounting or knows anyway to lessen these vibrations or make them so I can't feel them that'd be great. The drive is completely new and was order just over a few weeks ago. Would prefer not to have to return it as that's a hassle due to it being online and covid shutdowns where I live. So solutions on the drive itself is preferred otherwise I might just get rid of it Just a note, I don't mind the noise. I can barely hear it as is so I'm only really looking for a solution on how to stop myself from feeling these vibrations (Preferably not just putting the computer on the floor as I have carpet and cats) Any help is welcome and appreciated!
  8. I have a PC I built at the end of last summer. Its specs are as follows: Windows 10 Home 64 bit Intel i9 10920X Asus ROG Rampage VI Extreme Encore BIOS Version: 1002 2 x 8 GB Corsair Dominator Platinum Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Super Reference Card WDC WDS100T2B0B-00YS70 M.2 Boot Drive ST4000LM024-2AN17V Sata Secondary Drive Corsair HX1200i 80 Plus PLATINUM 1200 Watt PSU Over the weekend, I bought 3 WDC WD102KYRZ-01A5AB0 SATA 10TB drives. When I plugged them in and booted up the system, all three drives are detected correctly in the BIOS. However, in Windows, one was detected correctly and works as expected; the second appears to be detected correctly and functions, but it appears in the Device Manager under an incorrect name. It appears under ST4000LM024-2AN17V, not WDC WD102KYRZ-01A5AB0. The third is not detected at all. I know it isn't the drives because I have tested them on a USB to SATA cable and another system, and they all work correctly. I have tried clearing the CMOS, switching the SATA cables, plugging them into different ports and updating the BIOS, all with the same result. Any help would be appreciated.
  9. Hard Disk desktop SEAGATE BarraCuda, 1TB, 7200 RPM, SATA3, 64MB, ST1000DM010 (altex.ro) Hard Disk desktop SEAGATE SkyHawk Surveillance 1TB, 5900RPM, SATA3, 64MB, ST1000VX005 (altex.ro) Hard Disk desktop WD Purple, 1TB, Surveillance, SATA3, 64MB, WD10PURZ (altex.ro) I would like to upgrade my storage, my current HDD is the same capacity but it`s too sluggish. Also, how many SATA 3 ports are usually on an ATX or mini-ATX mobo? I think I might not have enough. Also which of these SSDs are better: Solid-State Drive (SSD) ADATA Ultimate SU650, 240GB, SATA3, M.2, ASU650NS38-240GT-C (altex.ro) Solid-State Drive (SSD) KINGSTON A400, 240GB, SATA3, 2.5", SA400S37/240G (altex.ro) Thanks in advance!
  10. Hi all, I am a long time viewer on LTT but very new to this forum, and I know vibrations kill hard drives. So I ordered a 8TB Ironwolf (non-pro) HDD on newegg and it arrived earlier today. When I got home, I tried to rotate the box to pick it up more easily. (I know it is the drive ATM.) To my great personal horror, it made a very large THUMP sound! So I opened it quickly, only to find this packaging.... The drive was sitting on a corner of the box with some loosly stuffed air pillows above it, with no measures to secure it. So it has been banging around the box for this whole time during shipping..... Of course I can't accept it. So I was contacting costomer help line, but the representatives keep telling me: a) I did not open it, and b) If it works when I open it they can not refund a full charge (+ original shipping + free return shipping), because this is technically "I don't want it anymore", and I cannot prove the product _may_ be bad, or it may suffer from pre-mature failures. Knowing hard drives, there is no way in freaking hell that I entrust my data to this sorry ass excuse of a "good" drive. Now, the way I see it, there are 2 ways for me to go: a) Waste hours of my time to find a reasonable representative who would take this drive back and issue a full refund + original shipping + free return shipping, or b) per the representatives I talked to, if the drive fails when I power it up, they will accept my claim. Now I can make sure it fails when it powers up and Seagate will blame Newegg's shipping dept. for it (you know how), but I'd rather not to, that just being a bad human being..... So if y'all know a way to fix this, or if some reasonable person from Newegg is reading this, pleeeeease, feel free to leave a comment or contact me to remedy this cluster f-up. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bottom line, I can not accept this hard drive and subject myself to data loss..... DUH....
  11. Hello, Im working on a new PC for 3D Rendering in programs like Vectorworks and Autodesk AutoCad. The case I've chosen has 6 available 3.5 HDD slots and two 2.5 SSD slots built in along with 7 NVME M.2 SSD slots on the motherboard giving me plenty of SSD storage and I had theorized about using the HDD as a internal, external storage unit but was unsure how or if this was possible. Thanks for any advice you can offer. I'll list the build specs below. **note: this is only a plan, I am waiting to purchase any items until chips become more readily available and prices lower from there current extravagant highs. Yes I know it's overkill but its meant to last and not need upgrades for a significant time span. Motherboard: MSI TRX40 Creator CPU: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990x GPU: 2x Nvidia Titan RTX with NVLink bridge Case: Fractal designs Define R6 SSD: 10 TB NVME M.2 , split over 7 drives (seagate barracuda's) HDD: 6x 12 TB Ironwolf Pro's NAS, for 72TB total RAM: 128GB Corsair Dominator **admin** if this is in wrong spot please remove and DM to let me know, thanks.
  12. I recently just built a brand new computer so I can upgrade from my old one the only components a cup from my old build is my SSD and hard drive, the hard drive would not work no matter what I did not appear anywhere after digging through the bios for a little while it said something about smart device so I decided to just buy a new hard drive, after installing the new hard drive it worked great until later that night I restarted my computer only to see the American megatrend screen reappearing which gave me huge anxiety because it feels like my new hard drive just broke, I didn’t really do anything and it started working again and this morning it happened again and I honestly don’t know what to do anymore
  13. Hi, I am trying to recover some data from a broken hard drive (Western Digital WD10EZEX) and was swapping the suspected broken pcb (REV A 2060-771829-005) out with a new one. I was following this video on how to swap the BIOS chip over to the donor board when removing the BIOS chip I broke of the leg from pin 4 . It seems like it require some rocket surgery to attach the leg back on and there's no easy way to hold it back on. I found out that pin 4 on the BIOS chip in question (Winbond W25Q20BW) is the ground pin. Can I just solder my BIOS chip to the donor board with no ground pin connected? Or is this incredibly naive and wont work?
  14. Hey there, so on my Personal Rig, i have a 500gb samsung 970 evo as a boot drive with all the OS, drivers, Office and Programs like Steam, BattleNet, origin, and so on. and then i have a 4tb hard drive for mass storage, so all my games and videos, pictures and stuff like that. i wanna add another 4TB Hard Drive (Mostly because I wanna a badass personal Rig, not cause I need it), but is there a way to have a windows drive (example: Mass Storage for me on Windows is D Drive), is there a way to have D drive span multiple physical drives (I honestly just wanna see drive D have 8tb of storage)? don't really wanna use raid cause I don't care about the extra performance and the would rather keep the stuff I already have.
  15. I have an acceptable laptop(i3-6006U with 4gigs of RAM). But the thing that bothers me is my storage. I bought it about an year ago with a terabyte HDD, but past 6 months I was having 100% disk usage issues. Several minutes after boot it would stay at 100% and suddenly drop at 3-4% usage. Same when I am opening any program like Chrome or Zoom or any games, goes up, stays there and suddenly drops down. After all that finally the HDD failed last week. Bios and device manager recognizes it but it is not shown in neither disk manager nor in the File Explorer. I used an old 500 gig HDD. Stuck times are low.... but the problem is still there. Are HDDs just too slow to handle Windows 10? I wanted to test the HDD speed and thus have such results. I also took a screenshot of task manager when running yt. First spike is me clicking on Youtube homepage button after a 10mins video. Second spike is me switching tabs to task manager. And third is me opening Xbox game bar for taking ss. Is my Sata drive controller an issue? Or its just all HDDs of the world? (ps-Can't play Minecraft rn.....Goes from 75FPS to stop randomly)
  16. So I have 2 Seagate Firecuda 2.5mm drives. One 2TB the other just 1TB, finally got the custom power cable (included I cables not long enough) I needed so I could add the 1TB to my build. So I decided to make a spanned volume out of the two drives so it would just show as one drive. and it was working fine, but lately its been running super slow. Like around 1MBs either way slow with 100% activity. the only things on the drive are games and things where fine for months but now there is a noticeable lag or hitch in games when its loading things. Even for games that are not very load intense like playing the soundtrack during game in Halo MCC. The spanned volume is about 78% full (2.12 of 2.72 TB used) so if my logic is correct the first drive should be entirely full and spilling onto the second drive.
  17. I ran crystaldiskmark on my very old 2007 WD Green 7500, and I think these speeds are slow?
  18. Hi Im building a small software riad for my increasing bluray backup (plus all other valuable data) the array will be built of 8tb HDDs, in a cooler master silencio 550 (i went to a fiar bit of effort to find a case with 5.25" bays as well as many hdd space). I have 2x 5.25 blueray drives and an 3rd 5.25" bay with an hotswap bay. Hdds go upto 18tb currently in the consumer space, i considered however that it may be useful to create an external parity drive for the array in the pc. The array will be running windows as my backup software will need to be run on this ofc and i dont understand enough about unraid or similiar things to worry about running containers and feeding the hdd space to it etc (seems too complex to worry about tbh) This is more a thought experiment atm but due to the fact that a single large drive is also very expensive- based on the fact the array is unlikely to be updated very often- could an drive be created for parity to keep in as an "external" spare to help rebuild the array should one drive fail? I know most of you will say nas or synology but i really dont need anything like a nas just a vault to protect my data and hold my bluray drives etc May also be worth mentioning this pc i will need to run headlessly which i will be looking into so any advice here would be great (no i dont want a subscription). Any thoughts on this would be welcome. Thanks alex
  19. i found this YT video and its pretty straight forward, but i cant get the smile off my face after imagining people starting shouting at their computers to check this
  20. To be clear I have windows install on SSD and rest of application like VSCode, Steam etc. installed on hdd(brand new). It would work fine for certain time but after sometime it's usage in task manager gose to 100. At first I thought my sata cable had gone bad so I switched it and it worked. But issue came back so I thought perhaps there is problem with port so I switched it solved the problem or so I thought. I don't know what's the problem can someone help.HDD is Western Digital Blue.
  21. Hi all, I need some help with a storage spaces storage pool. OS: Windows 10 Pro SATA Drives: Samsung SSD (Boot), DVD-RW, 2 x WD Blue 4TB, 2 x other HDD's I have two 4TB drives setup in two-way mirror mode via storage spaces, many years ago. The pool is almost full now, and one of the drives is showing some pending sectors, so I snagged two new 8TB drives in a good deal. I intend to replace 2 x 4TB (mirror'd) drives with 2 x 8TB drives, maintaining it in NTFS, and maintaining all data since I have some programs installed in this pool. I'm wondering what the best approach is? I've seen some tutorials on how to do this for drives of the same size, but not for different (larger) new drives, which I expect would create some issues? I also clicked the 'upgrade pool' button, which I understand is some sort of new feature, so I'm not sure if it affects how previous tutorials work. I use the DVD-RW drive, and the two other HDD's for work data. Therefore, it would be best to minimize the downtime of these drives if possible. The way I see it, one way would be to remove the other two work HDD's - mount the 2 new 8TB drives, and set up a new storage pool on those drives. Then, copy everything from the old pool into the new pool, unmount the old pool and rename the new pool's drive path. Is this sensible? Thanks in advance for your feedback.
  22. Hello everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle. I have a 2 TB seagate external HDD.It doesn't show up in my computer ,it does show up in Devices and Printers and when I open disk manager it wants me to initialize and partition the drive which is a bad news because i have data on it and i dont want to lose it. Just booted up Tenorshare 4DDiG to see if i can recover anything, been waiting 40 minutes out of the 18 hour time remaining so far 0 files found
  23. So I’m finally getting off my ass and properly setting up my homelab. I’d like to run the thing as cheaply as possible and don’t mind scaling down the applications. I want to upgrade my 6 year old 500gb external HDD as it has been the main disk for 3 of my samba servers. The stuff stored on there is starting to get important enough that I need some sort of redundancy and backup. My current plan is to buy 2x 4TB external drives. The drive configuration is my main question. I don’t think this tiny boi could really handle ZFS, BTRFS, or RAID (mdadm) so my plan was to rclone the drives every night (maybe once a week). I couldn’t really find too much on the performance hit though. I’m also a little scared of the recovery process for RAID, because I had a freenas system die taking out the os and a drive. It took me a week to recover the data (which involved a lot of partition table editing, or something). I just need want a second opinion and advice as most of my circles find no interest in this stuff. Extra Info Regarding my Hardware and lab services Key: * = high priority, everything else I don’t mind dropping. Potential Tasks: Samba Server for users who want it (I’ll probably make a registration front end) *Backup (My last server used duplicity over FTP, I’ll have to explore options) My current backup solution is a hard drive on my desk rclone/rsync – the family business files (Google drive and a mac computer which receives very little love) *Automation tasks I have a script that moves files from a certain USB to a newly created folder. A backup of itself (thinking timeshift, but still to explore) Services (Docker hopefully): Plex *Plex for manga (Lanraragi, Komga, Kavita – in order of most Likely) (Will replace a single samba share) *gitea I’ll be using it as a backup for my github repos VM (possibly steam in-home streaming) ghost (CMS) (I’ll be building my portfolio on it and using it for deploying to my vps) Focalboard – for family business task management (to explore) Stock Photo's application I'm building for videos Hardware (NUC knockoff): CPU: Celeron J1900 Memory: 4GB OS: Ubuntu 22.04 server Drives and Config: Samba4 on external drive Drives are: 250GB SSD (Main OS) 230GB HDD (2.5 inch running through usb to sata connector – not used) 500GB external HDD (85% capacity - The Samba disk) Hardware Upgrades: Aside from the drives I don't really want to spend money on this thing. I'll be increasing the SSD's swap space if it needs more memory. HDD Swapping out both HDD for 2x4TB external USB HDD in some sort of redundant mode It's late here so I'll be back tomorrow. Thanks everyone for the help
  24. the first HDDs were the size of refrigerators with platters 16 inches across modern hard drives are all 3.5 inches or smaller What if we took everything weve learned about manufacturing hdds and applied it to older form factors? Like for example if we made 5.25 drives with modern manufacturing processes we could get monstrously high storage capacities at the cost of physical size im sure there are plenty of datacenters and digital archives that would have niche but lucrative use cases for such a drive
  25. Hello people, I have an HPE ProLiant MicroServer Generation 8 (Gen8) and I looking to make a small NAS for the home based on TrueNAS Core. 2x4GB DDR3 ECC and a Celeron® G1610T *(if anyone has an E3-1265L v2 or E3-1260L I would happily pay to be shipped to me ) I would like to get 4 x4TB HDD and set them on a RAID 5 (RAIDZ1) with an SSD 128Gb that I already have on hand on the ODD for boot.(currently booting from an SD Card 32GB I am looking at the IRON WOLF (very popular choice) , the WD RED (smr vs cmr scandal) or the Toshiba N300 (looks very good on paper). Fist of all if you had to pick one of the 3 above , which would you picked? Also do you have any alternative options that you could recommendations ( a friend of mine suggested to go with enterprise HDD but they are very expensive) Thanks in advance
