Hi, Does anyone know if ASRock X99 EXTREME11 LGA2011-v3 supports 8TB hard drives on all 18 SATA ports (i.e. 18 x 8TB = 144TB) at once? Couldn't find a definite answer on this topic anywhere... Cheers

Would a USB hard drive be more or less resilient to a power supply failure? I'm kind of obsessed with quiet so I removed the three hard drives I was using for backup and documents and put them in a 'NAS' made of a bunch of old computer parts I had laying around from old builds. I didn't have a spare power supply so I bought this no-name 500W ( allegedly ) power supply to use in it. I'm almost certain that at some time it will fail, possibly catastrophically. I also have an unused USB hard drive i could use for backup. I want to know if my data will be safe in a USB hard drive. I'm guessing that as it works on the 5V rail it would be better off? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi there, So I'm looking into installing Kali on my PC as a dual boot. Currently I've got windows on a 240GB SSD and then all of my other data, such as steam games, videos and work on a 2TB Hard Drive. I'm wondering if it's a good idea to install Kali onto the HDD or should I buy a separate one for this Thanks

OK now. I am not a silly-goose with computers as I built the rest of it. But now, adding a third sata object(a new hard drive), my four sata ports only allow me to plug in 2, as they face each other. How in the world am I supposed to add a 3rd or 4th item HP.If you want to know, the Computer is a HP Dx2810. And yes, I have TWO of them. Please help me. The second image tells you the layout of the ports. The first is my cables

Hello LTT community. I was playing with a magnet (ceramic, in case somebody asked). then I put it in a bin where a spare hard drive was stored. Tomorrow, I noticed that one of my drives was completely full so I thought I'll just put my extra drive in there. When I pulled the drive out of my bin I saw that the magnet, that I threw in the bin the day before, attached to it... will it still work?? Thanks.

I run a YouTube channel, and my desktop rig has only 1 hard drive. I don't have any backups whatsoever of this drive. But, after hearing about how it's borderline necessary to have a backup drive if you do this kind of work, I looked to Newegg for some 1TB HDDs(I don't need my entire hard drive backed up; only certain folders). I came across a lot of WL(white label) drives, and they're looking pretty enticing, seeing as I can get a 1TB drive for $40. Now, I know that it's a real gamble buying a WL hard drive, but I found this video that sort of alleviates the issue of having the drive spin up every time I turn on my machine: My thinking is that if I buy a white label hard drive, I'll only be spinning it up every few days, which would inherently extend its life relative to if I used it as a regular hard drive. Is this a good idea? I'm not seeing any gaping flaws aside from just receiving a dead or dying drive, but do any of you have any experience with WL hard drives? I don't have a lot of money to work with, so buying a cheap backup hard drive is ideal.

What hard drives would you recommend that OBS can record to? I like to record 1080p 60 fps PC Gameplay at 10000 bitrate. Would getting a bigger 2TB 7200rpm drive be a good choice or should I be going higher rpm for that. This HDD is meant for all recording obs files, files that will go to Adobe Premiere Pro, and go to YouTube. Also when I stream to Twitch, I like to record at the same time so those files will also go here.

Short story: I need a dual-bay HDD docking station to mirror, copy and work off of for my current projects and what to know what's best. Longer: I've heard a few horror stories about people using HDD docking station and having them disconnecting randomly or worst of all, corrupting the drive/erasing the data. I know Linus used some of these guys back when he was working out of the house but I can't find the video where he reviewed one. Yes, I'm copying what Linus was doing with his old hard drives despite His best intentions. We almost never reference old footage (and I don't plan on storing them in the bathroom.) So for now, that system is the most cost-effective way to maintain and secure our data while keeping it accessible and easily transferable between our two editors. What systems/ brands would you guys recommend? We're going to backup each project onto two drives. One will be used to actively pull and edit projects and the other one will be a safe backup (on a shelf), updated at the end of each day. So a two bay system would be best. I know that docking stations with USB 3.1 are starting to pop up but, I don't think it would be necessary as none of our project drives are faster than 150m/s anyway. (We do have the OS and cash files on some nice SSDs though. ) These are three options I'm looking at right now: Cable Matters USB 3.0 http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Docking-Standalone-Function/dp/B015EOK8DK/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1456430114&sr=1-3&keywords=hdd+docking+station+3.1 BlacX USB 3.0... 2.0 http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Drives-Docking-Station-ST0014U/dp/B002MUYOLW/ref=sr_1_7?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1456432151&sr=1-7&keywords=hard+drive+docking+station&refinements=p_n_feature_keywords_four_browse-bin%3A6022609011%2Cp_72%3A1248879011 Star Tech USB 3.1 http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-10Gbps-Dual-Bay-Dock-SATA/dp/B00XLAZ9KC/ref=sr_1_6?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1456430226&sr=1-6&keywords=hdd+docking+station+3.1 Thanks for the help! So today I noticed files (specifically music) weren't playing properly from my seagate barracuda 2TB HDD. Long story short, between Google and other forums I discovered my hard drive was getting "bad block" errors, which apparently means it's dying. So, I'm getting a new drive tomorrow before It dies completely and I have to attempt to recover everything. what I was wondering was what are your experiences with drives failing? This one is only 2 years old and is used more as a games/multimedia library, so it's in use only about half the time. It was a 40 C day today but it wasn't under heavy use. Is this normal? Is there any other contributing factors or is it normal for drives to suddenly begin to fail? Im really interested in what you guys have to say. cheers

My ssd setup seems to be corrupted. For instance every program I launch seems to not work. Windows "repaired my computer" when I booted up today and now it does not work whatsoever. I cannot open the start menu my desktop icons were gone but I fixed that problem. Nothing launches except google chrome and steam for some reason all steam downloaded games work. Also my mouse pointer looks odd. The tail is longer and the font is more rigid than usual. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please let the computer GODS take pity on me. Please let me recover my data. Background: I was working on the water cooled computer. Changed out all the hoses, reservoir, etc. I finished and booted up to work on my Aquaero 5XT. I saw they had new 2016-2 software so I installed that. To get it working I needed to update the Aquaero firmware as well. I did that then restarted the computer and had nothing, no boot, no BIOS or anything. I was just stuck on reading the A2 code on the motherboard. I tried the all the various video ports on my two Radeon graphics cards and the one mini display port on my EVGA N77. Well after some trial and error, clearing CMOS, etc. I finally got the computer to boot by switching to BIOS #2 on the motherboard. So it seems the Aquaero firmware corrupted my BIOS (not sure why that would affect motherboard BIOS). So I restored my computer to the day before and then was able to boot back into BIOS #1 which had an updated BIOS compared to #2. I reinstalled the Aquaero software and the firmware again without any issues that time. I thought I was good to go. Problem: I now released my RAID 10 Array was broken. I have one OCZ SSD which has my operating system and all my programs. I have 4 6TB WD Reds on RAID 10 and 2 of the hard drive were broken from the array "non-RAID" hard drives. I have been reading up on this because I absolutely do not want to loose my data which should still be on the drives to the best of my knowledge. I went into the Intel Rapid Storage software and deleted the two drives and recreated my RAID 10. I did not move or rearrange any of the SATA cables when recreating the new RAID array. Questions: 1. I want to recover my data and I think I still have that option maybe. I think alot of people use test disk and I am willing to pay for software if there is something better. I have scanned my hard drive with test disk but the program looks a little different from the instructions and I cant really tell if my data and partitions are correctly listed to attempt the recovery. I do not want to go into this step unless I am 100% sure. I just dont want to go into a step that I cant recover from and am terrified of loosing all my data if it isn't already lost. I need help here and would be the world to me if I can recover my lost data. I thought going to RAID 10 would keep me safe but seems to be a real headache. 2. Short question I'm pretty sure the EVGA N77 is a big P.O.S. motherboard. If I stay with the same company or not is there a way to keep my RAID array and upgrade to a newer motherboard. Not sure if this question should come before or after the first question. If my data is completely lost then it wont matter at all, if I am able to recover it then it does matter.

For Christmas I built my in-laws a new computer which included a 500GB HDD from Seagate. Two weeks ago while visiting they told me the computer stopped booting and weren't sure why. So upon inspection I noticed that their MBR became corrupted so I attempted to fix this using Bootrec. When I tried using Bootrec /fixmbr I was given the error "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" with the error code 0x8007045D. The computer is less than a month old so I don't think the HDD is dead, but I cannot fix it for the life of me. I've tried booting the Windows 10 recovery tool from two different USB thumb drives with the same error anytime I attempt to clean the disk using Diskpart. The only thing I haven't tried is booting from Linux to format the drive from an external OS, which is what I'm in the middle of doing. Does anyone have any advice as to how to proceed? Is the drive dead? I'm not really sure what to do at this point and replacing the drive is going to suck if the drive is dead. Thank you in advance to anyone with any advice on the matter.

Guys, I have trouble with my external hard-drive. My laptop, which runs Windows 10 Pro, cannot recognize my new hard-drive. It is a Sager NP9870S that I just bought 1 month ago. So it has recent hardware and software, and my Sager works with no trouble with other hard-drives (all single bay).As for the problematic hard-drive, it is one that I have assembled. For the enclosure, I bought this one: Icy Dock MB662U32SR1 MB662U3-2S-R1 DAS Array. As for the hard-drives, I bought two Seagate Enterprise 8tb drives.I installed the drives as recommended. And the first time I used my new drive, the driver was installed, I put the drives into Raid 0. And then I used Window 10's disk manager to assign a drive number, I designated the as a "Single Volume", I gave the drive a name and then did a quick format. The drive was working fine for transfer of data back and forth. But when I turn the hard-drive off, the next time I turn it on, my laptop cannot recognize the presence of the drive. Disk manager does not list it at all.But every time, I reset my drive, the drive is recognized by Windows 10. I tried changing the drive into the other modes: JBOD, Big, RAID 1 and again RAID 0. The drive works fine until I turn it off.I have checked the two drives and they work in a single bay enclosure... Just in case, I have tried with two 6tb Enterprise Seagate drives. I even removed the enclosure's board and plugged the drives directly. I used various USB 3.0 cable. I have tried it on another Windows 10 Pro laptop. Both laptops' drivers are up to date. No changes. The drives always no longer work after I power it off.I am at a lost on what is happening. On the description on Icy Dock's webpage, my new enclosure should be able to handle 16tb. The two drives are working when they are moved to another enclosure (single bay though). And the drives (both 6tb and 8Tb) are described on Seagate's site as been compatible with external hard drive enclosure. In fact, they are supposed to be compatible with NAS... So what is happening? Can any one help me please? Thank you in advance!

I will be selling my Macbook Pro soon to get money for my new computer, a gaming pc, but I don't want people getting my personal data. Is there a way that will completely wipe my SSD, so no one can get the data? What software would I use? How long would it take? Finally, would I loose the OS X install? Thanks, Scott

I have a gaming PC with a boot SSD and hard drive for all my files and games. I recently put a fresh install of Windows 10 on the SSD, but kept all my games, etc. on the hard drive. With Steam, I just changed the game download folder to the old one that I previously used on the hard drive, so Steam recognized this and I can play all of my games (after going through initial setup.) I tried to do the same with Origin, but such as above was not the case. If possible, how can I get Origin to recognize the games from the hard drive so I don't have to re-download the games all over again?

I have a Western Digital My Passport Ultra. As of recently it has stopped showing up when i plug it into my laptop or any other computer. The light on the drive turns on however it doesn't show up in my file explorer or even notify me that it has been plugged in. I tried searching in the device manager and I am unable to find it there. I have some important files needed for a few projects I'm working on the drive and really need to access them. How do I fix the problem with my external drive?

Hi everyone! I was wondering the following. Does a hard drive brake when, for example, the electricity in my house stops working and my hard drive doesn't get any power anymore. I'm setting up a server, but I don't have like some kind of car battery-like backup power supply. Although I live in Belgium (Europe), so I won't experience power outages because of my electricity supplier. But I have an old house, and when we (the family) use to much household machines at the same time, we lose all electricity. So is this something dangerous for my drives? (I obviously know that my server will stop working, but I want to know if my hard drives will be permanently broken.) Thanks!
