Every time I start my pc and it runs the bios it says that my c drive needs to be scanned and repaired but seems to do nothing because it only takes 15 seconds at max. Then when i try to download anything to it it says I don't have permissions to do so. I'm also the admin of my computer. Can anyone give me ideas to explore to fix this.

Hello! I'm hoping this is the correct place to ask this. I'm a long time consumer / supporter of LTT, but first time on the Forums. Current Specs on pc: Motherboard – ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus Processor – AMD Ryzen 7 5800x3D Memory: 32gb G.SKILL Aegis DDR4 3200 GPU: Zotac GeForce RTX 3080 TI AMP Halo OS Drive: Intel 660p M.2 1st Games Drive: WD SN550 1tb (wds100t2b0c-00pxh0) Alt storage: 2 Seagate BarraCuta 2TB SATA drives and a 256gb OCZ Agility 3 Sata SSD I would like to add another M.2 drive. I'm looking at the WD Black SN850X 2 TB or the Samsung 980 Pro 2tb. Both are the same price. I play a lot of CoD Warzone 2.0, Apex Legends, and stream regularly 3x a week. My question is, will I be ok adding another M.2 drive or am I going to risk bogging down my PCI lanes between the 2 m.2's plus my GPU cranking a game + streaming? Would it be safer to get rid of the obsolete OCZ Sata drive and replace it with something like a 2TB 870 Evo? Thanks in advance!

Hello! I have been struggling with storage space issues for a long time (especially since I use my PC for work, video rendering, gaming and 3D modeling) and I want to do a few upgrades. I'm currently using 1 SSD for Windows/data and 1 HDD (7200 rpm) for data/games. The plan is adding 2 extra SSDs, but I have the following questions: -Will I have power issues for running 3 SSDs + 1 HDD in my system? My PSU is a Corsair RM750i. -Is it too risky to use the same PSU Sata cable to connect all those drives? I'm using a PCI-E 6Pin "1 to 4 Sata cable" that comes with the PSU, but I heard they can catch fire easily if there's a lot of stuff connected to them. -Is it ok to combine a "1 Male to 2 Female Y splitter" with the previously mentioned "1 to 4 Sata cable" to connect two SSDs together? My computer case's lighting is taking up one of those four Sata connectors, so I don't have enough to connect all the hard drives. Thank you in advance.

Budget (including currency): $70.00 USD Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: primarily for the storage of the majority of the files on my system, documents, pictures, music, and programs. additionally will serve as bulk storage for games that i am not currently playing but are too big to just reinstall later when I do want to play. I would also prefer to play smaller games that don't benefit much from faster storage directly off of this drive. Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): so my 4tb bulk storage drive is having some complex issues that i wont go into here(check my previous posts) but require its replacement as the only permeant solution. I'm undecide as to rather it would be worth my time to replace it with a WD Red drive or if i should just go for the standard WD Blue. the the prices are similar enough that i could get either one, my only sticking point at the moment is i don't really know what kind of performance to expect from a red drive, or how the lower cache size will effect the performance. on paper the driver should perform almost identically. i understand that red drives are meant to be higher quality over all.

Hello, I bought a laptop recently (MSI GF63) but it's hard drive is very small (250GB) and I figured I can just get an external for the actual games library. I play Destiny mostly and it is a huge game (almost 100GB). When I had it on my laptop hard drive it worked excellently. The game booted up quickly and the in game FPS counter was reading consistently above 70 during play and 100+ in menus. I bought a Firecuda Gaming HDD 2TB external hard drive. The reviews said it worked really well and that you cant really notice a difference when gaming. However when I moved Destiny over to the Firecuda, the game took almost 2x as long to boot up. I was getting 10-15 FPS in the menus. It was terrible. Like trying to play on my husbands laptop that doesnt have a graphics card. Anyway, I was hoping maybe I didnt set it up correctly or something. If someone could help. I dont have much technical knowledge so anything would need instructions on how to do it. Thanks so much. If I cant get it to work properly, I will return it and save up for something better. If you think thats what I should do anyway, can you recommend something? Also, I did search the forum for help and found a couple older posts, but I didnt really understand anything that was recommended. As the title says , This is NOT a brand new HDD since ps3 Hdd's are no where to be found where i live i could've bought a brand new one but its for my little brother and he was impatient. The hard as i said was not new so while he was installing a game he noticed it took longer than usual before the upgrade (Since the ps3 we had was a 12gb) and we upgraded to 500 , i checked the hard drive using Hard Disk Sentinel and to my surprise it has 90% health and 16 weak sectors. and now he is paranoid (as well as i am) over the whole thing since we can't really return it anymore. Should we be concerned ? We haven't noticed any performance losses or crashes or weird noises or anything to be fair. IT is also a Toshiba 500 GB 2.5" inch hard drive.

Hey friends, I'm new to LTT forums and I have no clue if this has already been asked/posted about (I can't find a simple way to search throughout the forum lmao) so I'm just making one to be sure. I've been having this issue ever since I own a personal computer -and actually care for performance/usability- which I've always ignored but I just decided to search further on it. It started with my (now 6 years old) laptop in both Windows 10/11, as well as my (newer, 1 year old) desktop gaming PC in both Windows 10/11 as well. I'll describe the issue in my desktop PC since I never really have my laptop running at idle. I have set my power plan to never put the computer to sleep automatically, and turn off the display after 15 minutes. During the entire time the PC is idle, it works just as expected, however after the 15 minutes when the display turns off, one of my hard drives (more specifically a 3'5" 1TB HDD) which is not a system disk, gets pinned to 100% usage and doesn't come down until I move the mouse/press a key to turn the display back on. What could the root of this issue be? Has this been a Windows issue since forever? My PC supports S3 power state, hibernation, and fast boot (afaik). My random guess is some file in that HDD is somehow being called when the display is off, and since it's not a system disk I just can't get my head around it. If you need more information just let me know, I have a medium-low understanding on overall tech stuff, but it only goes so far lol.

Hello, I have the problem that the installation of Windows 10 on my main drive (E:) is not recognized anymore, meaning I can't boot from it anymore. It is treated as there is no OS on the drive. This happened after I tried to install Ubuntu on another drive (F:), but encountered an error after selecting it for installation. Now I can only boot the Windows 10 on my old HDD (C:). I tried to configure the Boot Manager, as that would always show up when I booted my pc so I could select one of the two Windows 10 installations. But the Boot Manager doesn't recognize the installation on my E: drive. As far as I can see the E: drive didn't change and it really shouldn't have. All I did was moving files from the drive where I wanted to put Ubuntu on (F:) to a brand new drive (D:) and then tried to install Ubuntu on the now empty one. I want to avoid having to reinstall Windows on my E: drive and potentielly losing data, so if anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it.

Hi everyone, SOLVED: Turns out it was a dodgy SATAT cable. Strange that it only seemed to be one drive and not both, and only in one specific directory but nevertheless I am happy the problem has been found. I am having a very weird issue that I just can't seem to find a fix for. So I bought a couple of 6 TB Seagate Barracuda hard drives (brand new), and one of them seems to be possibly dying, but no software seems to show any indicator of it dying. I do have all the data backed up so data recovery isn't an issue. I went to clip a video on my PC and it was saved to my main SSD boot drive, and the file can be opened and viewed just fine. I then moved it to the drive in question in a specific folder. From then on whenever I even tried to open the folder, it would take FOREVER to load all the files in, and all the thumbnails and the file I just created would not open. It didn't error out or anything, it would just open in VLC media player and be a black screen. I thought that the file was broken, but I then moved the exact file to an external hard drive and that file works perfectly and the directory doesn't take long at all to load. It did however freeze the Windows explorer everytime I tried to open any file within that directory, so I deleted the folder and copy pasted it from my backup to the drive that does work back onto that drive and same thing. It would freeze Windows Explorer and then my screen would go black for a second and then come back and Windows Explorer would crash. I tried unplugging and replugging in the drive, and doing a quick format but I can't even format it as it just won't complete the format at all, and I checked the Task Manager for activity (see attached picture) and it constantly like this whether it is idle or being 'formatted'. So now I have a drive that has no partition on it as the format has failed. I also used Crystal Disk Info to see if it can detect anything bad (see screenshot) and as far as I can tell it seems ok? I don't really know how to interpret all the numbers and such but it says it is 'Good'. Please let me know if there is something within CDI I am missing. I have not dropped or caused any physical damage to the drive in any way and as you can tell from the CDI screenshot it is quite new. I am not too concerned about data loss as I have back ups but I would love to find out if there is something I can do to fix it. I did have a question about the drives making a clicking sound which they still do every now and then which has happened since I got them which I made a forum post about. See below for more details. Sorry for the very long post but I wanted to include as much detail as possible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated )

I was looking into getting a 3.5 inch hard drive to expand the storage of my new desktop. I was looking at getting an 8 tb drive. I found two drives that are both 7200 rpm. I found the WD Black 8tb 3.5 hdd with 128 mb cache and the Seagate ironwolf 8tb 3.5 hdd with 256mb cache. They are only $9 different in price. My use case is I game and video edit on my pc. .

So my older WD My book 1230 4tb external HDD, will seemingly on random not get detected by my pc, it gets detected by device manager but not on disk management nor in explorer. This happens randomly and has until now gone away after a couple of restarts, this time it seems to stay (I managed to get it to show up in explorer now, it's still not accessible and just says "device not ready" everytine I try to access it). I tried reinstalling drivers and it still doesn't work. Anyone knows what could be wrong or how to fix it?

I've tried uninstalling the m.2 SSD to see if it was causing the issue but my hard drive isn't able to be accessed, it isn't showing its normal name either just Local disk (D:) and when i attempt to format it it says I can't format it, then when I try to make a data pool with it the drive icon changes to one with a question mark next to it with only the name D:\ , it shows up in task manager and bios bit i just can't access it at all, when i tried doing data recovery it spit out txt files only that weren't readable. The drive-in question is an 8tb Seagate barracuda, boot drive is a 2.5 inch ssd and the m.2 is a 980 pro. it also shows up in device manager and ive tried seeing if there was something wrong with it there, but it says it is running properly

Hey all! I've had this hard drive for awhile and I had it installed vertically for about couple of years. Recently (though I don't know exactly when it started) I started hearing noises coming from my HDD. It's not a ticking noise, but rather a scraping noise when the disc is spinning. It doesn't happen all the time and the drive still works but it's still a cause for concern. This had me wondering if having it installed this way mattered at all. I will be replacing it regardless and was planning on placing it vertically again (I think it looks great in the Thermaltake View 31 case, but that's just about the only reason) but wanted to ask if vertical mounting an HDD has any effect on its longevity/lifespan, or the issue was with any other factors.. HDD is installed on a sled/caddy with all four screws and is on a vertical slot on the case that fits the sled. It was purchased on September 2018 through Amazon so it was delivered. As you see in the picture, it is a WD Blue 4TB one, and it was moved from my old case to the current one on January 2020. It is also partitioned to two separate logical drives. For its replacement, I was looking to get a NAS drive as I generally understand them as more reliable, but I had some lingering questions about them. I will not be using this drive in a server/NAS set up so does it matter? I do still want to consider it if it'll still last longer than regular HDD. Also, all of these NAS drives that I found advertise that they are designed for 24/7 operation and with vibration tolerance from other HDD, but I will just be using it on a regular PC that I turn on and off at least once on a daily basis, and without any other HDD in the case. Would doing so have an opposite effect and could actually be worse on these drives? Sorry for the long post and please do let me know if there are any bad practices with what I did. Also if there are any recommendations, I'll take them too! Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Hello, I am currently saving some old videos on to my hard drives. I plan on setting up a NAS in which I'll probably use 3-4 drives and RAID 5 (if there's a better option please inform me). I was wondering if it would be as simple as moving the files over to the new RAID setup to have it automatically turned into RAID 5 format, if I have to use a program, or if it's simply not possible. Thanks in advance for the help.

TL:DR My pc cant initialize or read my from one of my hard drivers, i get an I/O error when i try, the hard drive works in other machines and all its data is intact and backed up. i already tried 6 different SATA cables and all the active SATA ports my MOBO has. Okay here is the long version. Last week, my Seagate Barracuda 4tb hard drive started random disconnecting while in file manager, file manager would close while i was opened to anything on that drive. After a few hours it stopped connecting entirely. This is actually the second time this has happened and i don't remember the fix from the first time. when i try to initialize the disk i get an I/O error. disk management can see the size and model of the drive but that's it, Seatools can grab the basic info about the drive, and Crystal disk info cant see the drive. The hard drive works when attached to another windows 10 pc running the same build, so i backed up my data to an external hard drive i am barrowing. i am at a total loss as to how to fix this issue. so far I've tried: deleting the drivers 6 different cables 4 different ports initializing the disk from device manager scanned it with seatools (seagate diagnostic program) bashed my head into a wall. preyed to the omnissiah if i don't find a fix i am going to try to get a USB dock and use that since i need one anyway but thhat will have to wait until payday. I'm also going to avoid Seagate drives from now on incase it is a driver issue which is unfortunate as they have the cheapest mechanical drives available.

Hi all. My current setup involves an NVMe SSD boot disk and 2 hard drives. Chrome is installed on the boot disk, and only games go on the hard drives. I've noticed an odd thing recently where if I navigate to a tab I haven't used in hours, Chrome completely stalls out and I can hear the sound of one HDD or another starting to spin. As the whine of a disk spinning at ever increasing speeds stops (because it reached 7200RPM), suddenly Chrome is fine again. Is Chrome storing my cache on a slow drive? Or what's happening, and most importantly, how can I fix it?

My brother has had a hard drive in his computer for about 2 years now, and he did not realise that the entire time it was not even showing up because i built the computer for him. I have tried multiple sata cables, multiple power supplies, and 2 different computers. When i plug the hard drive into power, you can hear a hum and you can feel a vibration when you hold it, but it does not seem to be working (or atleast not showing up anywhere). Can anyone think of a reason for this?

My computer has a primary SSD and a secondary HDD. It started hanging when trying to access my secondary HDD where windows is not installed. I've had problems where HDDs have died before, so I tried replacing it (twice), so a failing HDD is pretty much out of the question. RAID and CHKDSK all said my HDDs were fine. So I tried replacing my PSU in case it was faulty and maybe not supplying enough energy for the disks to spin properly, but it didn't work either. And now, I've somehow managed to detect my PC failing to access the main SSD. I used a bootable Ubuntu USB and the responses were slow too, so it's probably not Windows failing. The way I detected the particular way the access time was slow was using the "benchmark partition" from the gnome disks utility: when it goes normally, it accesses the drive up to 100 times to check writing and reading speed and all data points are close to each other. However, when accessing my drives, even the new ones, it randomly drops to zero speed for unknown reasons and it stops performing the benchmark for a while. Is it possible for my CPU to be failing? Or is it the motherboard? I've tried replacing the cables and swapped the position of the drives to check if that's the cause of the issue but to no avail. Pictures of the benchmarks using hdtunepro: SSD HDD Computer specs: CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 3100 3.6GHz Motherboard: B450M PRO-VDH MAX (MS-7A38) GPU: AMD RX 5500 XT 8GB SSD: Kingston 500 GB HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB PSU: Cooler Master MasterWatt 650 EU

Hi all! I am having this weird issue, well what I think is an issue with some brand new hard drives. I recently bought 2x Seagate Barracuda 6TB hard drives (https://www.pccasegear.com/products/47556/seagate-barracuda-6tb-st6000dm003-3-5in-hard-drive) They seem to make this weird sound I have tried to catch in the video. It seems to happen every 5 seconds or so, even at idle, then it will stop for a bit and then happen again. It might be hard to hear in the video so you will need to turn it way up but in person it is definitely quite loud. I am not sure if this is cause for concern in terms of them actually being faulty or just me being paranoid. I recently had 2x 4TB Seagate Barracuda's, one of which died and I sold the other to my friend, and they didn't seem to have this weird sound. These 4TB drives lasted a few years. Even if this isn't cause for concern, is there a reason for the noise? And can I somehow stop it? Because it's not like its happening when it is being accessed. Even completely idle it does it. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you Vid 20220819 193739.m4v

I have a WD MyPassport 2TB hard drive. Its like 2 years old and now when i just plug the drive in my computer it makes this sound (attached file. The clip may be pretty quiet so you may need to turn the volume up). Hard drive sound (1).m4a There are no files transferring. Its just the sound it makes when I plug it in. Then after a few minutes the sound goes away and it sounds normal. So should I be worried and maybe consider to get the hard drive changed, because its still under warranty.

Hi All, I upgraded my B460m DS3H mobo BIOS from version F3 to F5. When I did so my PC would not boot after the BIOS update initialized. It was frozen on the Gigabyte Boot screen. I figured my boot order was messed up so I unplugged my hard drive (2.5 inch Firecuda 2TB SSHD "ST2000LX001"). My PC then booted properly on my SSD and the BIOS updated. Now the issue is that my PC cannot recognize my hard drive. If I try starting the PC while the hard drive is plugged in it will stay frozen on the Gigabyte Boot screen like before. If I load into my bios and then plug the drive via SATA it will not be detected. If I load into Windows and then plug the drive in via SATA it will still not be detected. If I try to access the BIOS straight from Windows while the hard drive is plugged in it freezes in a similar manner again. I have plugged the hard drive into an external case and have plugged it into my PC and my laptop via USB. They both see it as Disk 1 but it's messed up. It says "Disk 1, Unknown, Not Initialized" and the partition space is blank, nothing is there. I.e. it doesn't say "unallocated" I don't know what to do at this point. I think my drive is dead and I screwed myself by updating the BIOS. Can anyone tell me any troubleshooting options I can try? I have looked around the internet and nothing is working. Thanks for any help in advance.
