I currently can't boot into windows, and have somehow removed a partition containing 4TB of backups and un-backed-up files I'm currently working on. I was planning on reinstalling windows due to system instability caused by corrupted system files. I was going to use the system reset feature but it failed repeatedly and no amount of troubleshooting worked so I decided to create a new partition with some spare space to use as a bootdisk (I didn't have a USB stick or CD), load windows onto that and boot from there. In the process, without realising it I deleted grub (I dual boot with Elemental). I kinda copped that I had done that and sighed and shook my head but no biggie. The problem being when I was using diskpart I cleaned the volume that I thought was just my partition for installing windows onto but disk unmounted. Panicked and tired, I then restarted my PC. I was unable to get back up and running with grub rescue, so I took my elemental install media and figured that I'd format C:/, install elemental on one of the few free partitions on my 4TB disk, and continue getting a bootable windows installer ready on another partition in elemental Only, when I got into elemental it read my 4TB disk as completely empty. There was absolutely not enough time between me pressing "clean" on that volume and the operation completing/me restarting to format that disk, so I'm convinced the data is retrievable, but I have no idea how and I'm out of my depth and making mistakes. Pllleaaase someone help. I have been working overtime and trying to balance my degree on top of that and have made some very stupid mistakes in the course of the last 2 hours please forgive me for being an absolute idiot. -
Hey all, I recently had to reinstall Kubuntu 18.04 LTS because I accidentally wiped the hard drive it was installed on. Since then, I have had a lot of trouble with the Grub bootloader. First, I can no longer see Windows 10 as an option in the bootloader. I only get Ubuntu and Advanced Options for Ubuntu. Every post that I have read walking through the process of adding Windows through a "menuentry" in the grub.d folder has not worked for me Second, the resolution seems to have changed to a lower resolution. I have been reading a lot of different forum posts and cannot seem to find anything that brings Windows 10 back as an entry to Grub. Thanks all!

I am wondering as to how I would easily modify the following partitions without disrupting my current Linux installation located on sda5. sda4 is my old Ubuntu 18.04 installation that is kinda dead, and sda3 is the original windows 10 installation, with its ugly sda2. I wish to remove sda2, sda3, and sda4 while keeping sda5 intact without breaking grub as I would still like to boot this laptop, as it is my main laptop. However knowing my luck, I would probably end up fucking everything up if I blindly changed partitions around, so that is why im asking for help as to how I would go about doing this, I already have u bootable Gparted USB I can use for changing the partitions without having to worry about sda5 currently being mounted as it should be booting off of sdb at that time. Also I would not recommend using Ubuntu as it is quite unstable when compared to other distros. Also could somebody please tell me why sda5 is before sda4. Also a quick edit: If i had to modify entries in grub, how would i go about doing that?

THE SITUATION Few months back I ran into a situation where i completely destroyed my boot partition of windows trying to multi-boot windows and ubuntu. this situation made me visit the DELL Service center. it was fairly easy for them to fix the system and I got my system back in no time. BEFORE SERVICE CENTER VISIT 1. Windows installed on 128GB SSD in UEFI mode AFTER SERVICE CENTER VISIT 1. Windows was installed on the same 128 GB SSD but in legacy mode. MOTIVE To setup a multi-boot system where I should not be prompted by GRUB Boot-loader. I achieved this scenario where the windows was installed on the UEFI option and i was able to install the UBUNTU on the legacy mode of the bios. so whenever i had to run Windows i would just enable the UEFI mode and vice-versa. HELP NEEDED How should i achieve the same configuration when my windows installation is now installed in the legacy option. I am unable to enable secure boot and UEFI from the BIOS as it says no UEFI Partition found. Regards armaanfarshori

Hello. TLDR: My PC boots into grub and I have problems booting it into Windows again. Sooo....some time ago I ran Debian but later switched over to Windows again and thought I formatted the drives. So anyways, I wanted to use Hyper-V on my Windows 10 machine today and went into the bios to turn on Intel Virtualization Technology and rebooted. The PC then booted into grub, weird. I checked the boot options and I could no longer see the Windows boot option and tried to turn off the Virtualization option to see if I then could boot to Windows again, but the PC still booted into grub. I have tried to boot from every disk now and reset my bios but still can't seem to get the darn thing to boot into Windows. Anyone had this happen to them before or think they could help me to boot to Windows again?

Hi Friends. So I have an old laptop An HP 15-d027ca. Dinosaur. Only use it for youtube. Windows 10 is alright but only having 1Ghz is getting rough so gave linux a try. I can boot into Linux from a USB no problem. Runs perfectly with no issues. I wanted to run it alongside Win10 but was having issues so wiped the drive and am going to keep it strictly linux. I started with xubuntu but ran into an issue installing grub. Failed install. So tried lubuntu and it worked good enough so tried to install that. Here is a screenshot of whats happening I've tried manually creating partitions(found some people doing different partitions than others so tried both combinations). I let the installer wipe the drive and create the partitions its itself. Always get the same error. I went into the BIOS and played with every possible setting. Changing legacy support, secure boot, virtualization technology. Any possible thing until I exhausted all options. The BIOS is lacking in settings. I paid $250 for this laptop 6 years ago so it's minimal. There's tutorials about how to set it up to dual boot but now that I wiped the drive there's not much for this issue on a clean install. I tried 2 different USB's and 2 different iso's two times each one in case something was messed up when I created them but get this error every time. Does anyone know what this means? I'd be all for trying a different distro if this error would go away and it'd be easier. All I need is firefox, and the ability to use add ons with it. I'm just not sure if this will be a problem with all linux software or maybe just this one. For what I do I could just run it off a USB but I'd end up snapping it off one day while it's plugged in lol. Any help would be awesome.

My asus laptop has a hdd with three partitions one of which has windows And a blank new SSD. I installed linux mint on the ssd for a while. It booted with grub. but due to poor touchpads support I wanted to uninstall it. I booted into a live linux usb and formatted the SSD. Did the same from windows and formatted the SSD to NTFS..it now shows up as a blank 111gb drive, as it was unused. However, the in the boot menu, ubuntu still shows up and opens up grub when selected....I tried deleting the boot partition from bios, it didn't work. No wifi files anywhere ... What do I do? I want to completely clear the SSD and remove the grub..

I was running low on space on my ssd in windows so I decided to delete linux partition, then I reeboted my pc and then I rembered that Linux was installed on the ssd and hdd, and grub rescue started then I used gparted to delete the other partitions, but grub rescue is still starting. Please help

Was wondering if anyone knows of a guide or has successfully dual booted from a striped RAID 0 SSD array and a regular mechanical disk. I'm sure this is possible. My thoughts were a mounted boot drive with grub but grub just points to the two operating system, one within the RAID 0 and the other within a mechanical drive. Anyone have success with this? The stripe is my windows install, the linux install would be from the mechanical help. No need for a full guide, just wondering if anyone has any useful links.

Hello all, I recently purchased a Pc from Craigslist fr $275 It's specs are as follows.. 1. Ryzen 5 2200g 2. ASRock b350 pro4- the small for factor one 3. 8 gb gskill ripjaws 3000mhz 4. 250gb crucial mx500 SSD 5. 500gb Western digital blue 6. Some Corsair case and cx500 power supply My problem is that this computer is running Linux. I want to install Windows on it. Currently it has something called as grub bootloader. Suggest me some tips to remove that grub bootloader and install Windows 10 on it. It currently runs on Ubuntu.

OK so i have a HP Proliant DL360e G8 I have installed windows onto a SDD and it is connected using the CD drive sata connection and is listed as disk 5, i also have a HDD in the drive bays which can be listed as disk 1-4. The issue i am having it that the bios seems to not find the boot partition when the HDD and SSD are connected. If i disconnect the HDD then it boots. So i have looked in bios to see if i could select the boot options by disk, but this was not possible makes me wish i had a dell bios now. So my plan is to get a usb and have the boot partition on it and then i can change the boot order to boot from the internal usb first. The issue i have is how do i go about making a boot partition on a USB which will load my os?

Before I begin, I want to say thank you to everyone here for answering my questions about Ubuntu. I'm fairly new to this OS and the support I've been getting from you all has been amazing. So thank you for all the help. With that said: I got an Ubuntu update on the Work PC, and the Grub menu looks weird now - it looks like 2 different versions of Grub, but it's not. The menu works, and everything boots and functions like it should. Is this normal or is this something I should look further into?

I was recently trying to clear up storage when I saw my Linux dual boot partition and said to myself, "The last time I went on Linux was three weeks ago and it was to see if I can install Spotify. I don't need this." So I went and deleted the partition. The next time I booted up, I expected to have my PC just skip the grub, but instead, it went into a grub recovery screen. I tried changing the boot order to see if it was booting from a partition that didn't exist to change it, but it was booting from my SSD like it should be. I seem to be stuck as grub is not seeing anything, I’ve used a live lubuntu usb stick to check disk for errors and it came out fine. This is all happened after I deleted my lubuntu partition because I’m an idiot and decided that it would be easier that way. I am not Ubuntu savvy so any help is welcome!

Hello people of the internet! I recently got into DOS gaming through messing around with DOSbox and I am in some need of assistance with running FreeDOS in a triple boot configuration. I have an old Acer laptop that has a Celeron M and 2 gigs of ram that is already dual booting windows 10 32bit (somehow it manages this) and Linux mint 32bit. I'm not sure how I can also install FreeDOS with this and have it appear in GRUB as a boot option and also not how to mess it up and not have the option to pick booting into win10/mint. GRUB really confuses me... I am happy to answer any questions you have and thank you very much for any assistance you can provide.

I've been dual booting windows 10 and Ubuntu for years and now I would like to use Arch instead of Ubuntu. The installation process goes fine until I get to installing the boot loader. It keeps hitting me with the error "warning: your embedding area is unusually small. core.img won't fit in it.. warning: Embedding is not possible. Grub can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are unavailable and discouraged.. error will not precede with blocklists" I have Windows 10 and Arch partitions on the same 500gb ssd and between 4 partitions (Windows 10, Arch, Linux Swap, and some weird 4th partition which I assume is a W10 recovery partition) only 2mb of free space is available. Could this be the issue? I thought the boot loader was installed on the root partition, but now I'm just confused. Please give any suggestions you think may help. Update: for the time being I reinstalled Ubuntu because I was so frustrated. I still would like to use arch. -
I have a Stream 11 and it is incredibly basic. It was obviously manufactured to run Windows only, be abused by a student, and then discarded after 1 semester. Fortunately, I got mine in good shape, but Windows 10 no longer fits on the 32 GB SSD and I want to run Android x86. I ran GPART and did the thing and Android does install successfully, but it does not boot up after the fact, I mean, at ALL. The laptop doesn't detect on OS, so the SSD doesn't even come up as a boot option. I don't know if it's something to do with the laptop or the GRUB bootloader not installing correctly. Anything? -
Hello and thank you for reading I just bought a Samsung 850 evo (250GB) as my new boot drive, my old boot drive is a generic 1tb HDD for my laptop and i want to make the SSD my new boot drive Migration went fine but when i plugged the 850 evo in the laptop, it booted into the Grub command line, the one if you don't have a Linux OS installed and when i checked my Bios my laptop has Ubuntu by default https://imgur.com/a/zS7Km What do i do?

Hey forum! So today, I decided to install some kali linux onto my system(because why not). I found that it messed with my booting, so i just wiped the partition off my secondary hard drive. I rebooted and got into my Windows 7, but when I shut my PC down, and restarted it, all I got after post was (photo here) Anyone know how to untangle this mess? Thanks to all who respond, -Bob NOTE: The drive 3 not found did not affect this problem.

So I wanted extra space on my Windows 10 partition which shared a hard drive with Ubuntu 14. Like a stupid idiot, I ignored the boot issues warnings Gparted was screaming at me. I deleted Ubuntu and shrank the Linux section down to the size of grub. After Gparted was unable to alter Windows for whatever reason, I gave up and left an empty space between. It went into grub rescue as it told me it could not find any operating systems. I tried to reinstall Ubuntu, but grub was still unable to find any OS. I tried to reinstall Ubuntu again and the installer kept saying it was unable to install grub. Now I have is grub rescue and a bootable Ubuntu USB with Gparted. If it is necessary, I am willing to wipe the drive and reinstall Windows. I just need to know how to acquire the recover license key.

Hi, I have built a pc with one SSD and two HDD's. I want to install windows on the SSD and then ubuntu on one of the HDDs. I would like to know how I would go about doing this in such a way that I get the GRUB selection menu at startup. Also what would happen to the third drive? Would it be used by both or just one of the operating systems? Im not too familiar with partitioning so I'm not sure how to make it so that Ubuntu takes the entire HDD and leave the second HDD for windows. I know that I must first install windows on the SSD. After doing that what do I do next? Assume the SSD is sda and the two HDDs are sdb and sdc. Thanks in advance for your help!

Guys, I had to install Ubuntu on my system due to project work. So had thought of dual booting Windows 7+ubuntu. But after several tries i was not able to create a partition for ubuntu and also the partition i created via Windows disk management tool. that Partition was also not visible and i was not able to install ubuntu. Luckily i Had spare 500gb HDD lying around and i installed ubuntu on that system and now when i boot my pc.. it directly goes into windows and not into ubuntu MBR i.e GRUB(i guess after reading several articles over internet). My main Question is now how can i make my PC's boot loader to recognize that there are 2 OS in the system and and to give me the option to select 1 on every bootup. Please help me over here....

Greetings! A few days ago, when I went to boot into Windows, I got an error upon login, stating that "The User Profile Service service failed the login. User Profile cannot be loaded" and it kicks me back to the login screen. There is only one account on this install, and that is my main acount (yes, its an admin, and yes, I know that's bad practice.) Unfortunately, I see no way to create another account. The login screen has no appearent option to do so, and when I booting into Safe Mode, I didn't see the control to add a new account (but I was able to run in safe mode) This could simply be my ignorance, since I barely ever have to do anything on that front. I would like to avoid a wipe and reinstall if at all possible, because I am currently dual-booting between Windows 7 and Linux Mint, and reinstalling Windows would most likely give me trouble getting the boot manager to work properly. I rather like the simplicity of GRUB, and I don't trust Microsoft's products for anything mission-critical. I am currently writing this while on the computer in question, but within Linux Mint, which remains unaffected by the current situation (obviously.) That SSD is just extra storage and doesn't contain any actual system files, except for a copy of my user directory that I made this morning while in Safe Mode (I copied the entire C://Users/Trainguyrom/ directory as a backup.) Inside the spoiler is a photo of the error. Since I do not yet own a capture card, and I don't know of any way to screenshot the login screen, a crappy point-a-camera-at-the-screen-and-snap-a-photo method seemed to be the best choice, and I have not resized the image because that may make it difficult to read. The photo really doesn't reveal much that I haven't already mentioned, but its there for posterity. (4272x2848 pixels - 9.9MB. You have been warned...)

So I have been using Ubuntu and Windows but I have no clue how to get Windows 7 and 10 directly on the GRUB. Last time I tried it boots into the OS selector for the 2 windows OS's I have installed. Can anyone help me out? If you can can you use something called Grub Customizer?
