How do i format a hard drive but leave the OS (Windows 10) on it?
-
So I just installed a new 2tb HDD. It told me to pick a partition style and I chose GUID. I went to format it and when I right click, there's no format button. I am assuming this is an easy fix, but I honestly don't know what is wrong. I tried formatting it before choosing the partition style and that didn't work either. There's no error message, but just no "format" button for that drive specifically. Thanks! https://gyazo.com/fcbf26d4773498d98707c742194bfeb8

So I have a drive and that is formatted as an MBG. Is there any way to change it back to a format I can use for storage?

What file format should I choose in my partition to install Linux? I'm using GParted to make a partition for my OS, but I don't know what file format should I choose.

I have an old laptop and I used the dell secure erase on it and it now has a password on the drive. I have tried formatting with everything under the sun on a flurry of os'es (Windows , Dos , OSX , Ubuntu) and nothing has worked. I do not need any of the data off of the hard drive I just need to use it as a scratch disk. I really need this as a scratch disk any help would be appreciated.

Title gives a pretty good explanation of what happened: I downloaded the Windows 10 OEM to my 2TB external HDD, to be used on a laptop I'm attempting to re-image, thinking it would be a file on my HDD that I would select and use. To my horror, my 2TB external HDD has been completely reformatted from NTFS to FAT32 (note I have no idea what each of these actually are, I'm reasonably tech savvy just not up to date with tech jargon like this) My first reaction was to not touch anything; 'it definitely can be fixed as long as I don't mess with it' I installed a file recovery service (EaseUS free version) but upon completing a deep scan of the drive it tells me there are 2651.16GB worth of files to be recovered. On a 2TB HDD. Wat Had around 1.8TB of useable space initially, was about half full at time of format; only had games, videos and pics etc. on it, but would still be a nightmare trying to reinstall everything Any help here would be hugely appreciated, all I want is to reformat the drive to its original state with all the data that is (presumably) still on there intact. I haven't gone through with the recovery attempt with EaseUS yet simply because I have nowhere to install such a huge amount of data. Help pls and thanks! P.S. I am running Windows 10 OEM 64 bit, 2 external HDDs (D: and E:) and two internal SSDs; one m.2 (C: and F:) and one SATA. No issues with anything other than the single HDD

My laptop's screen died (runs fine on HDMI) so I thought I'd put it's 700GB HDD in my desktop. I can't use it though. The BIOS for my Gigabyte GA-H110M-H recognises it as a 750.1GB drive and supports it but when I run Windows (doesn't appear in explorer). It appears in disk manager and diskpart but with a volume of 0MB, "no media" and I can't format or initialize it. The HDD is currently setup as the laptop's boot drive. Is there a tool or hardware alteration that could fix this?

Guys, What's a Low-Level Format. Can it fix a fuc*ed up drive?

Hi there I plugged in my portable HDD (Disk 2 in the picture attached) to do format the drive but i'm not sure if i accidentally clicked something but now the HDD has split into two separate volumes. I am only able to interact with the volume on the left and if I right click on the volume on the right all the options are there but cannot be clicked. Please help so I can access the rest of my HDD. Thank you.

Hello, guys! I need your input. I had recently made a backup of my data in my microSD card. It is a 8GB Kingston microSD HC class 4 memory card. I was formatting it on my computer. I had connected my USB cable in the front USB port of my rig. I didn't know that my front USB port slot was lose. The formatting was stopped in the middle as my cable lost connection for unknown reasons. Ever since then, the card won't show up on my PC and neither can I mount it on my phone. Whenever I try to mount it, my phone gives a brief notification that tells that the SD card is being prepared yet nothing happens. I haven't tried connecting it to my PC through an SD card adapter because I could not find it. I do plan to use the SD card adapter as soon as I find it. Do you guys have any idea how can I revive it? I think it is more of formatting problem but I am afraid that it might have failed. While microSD card's are cheap, I don't want to buy a new one because I plan to buy a new phone in a week or two. I plan to get a Samsung S6. S6 does not have a microSD slot. Your help will be appreciated! Thank you for reading.

Recently I had to reinstall windows because my copy was becoming unstable and unusable and after doing the install my 2tb hdd decided to be difficult and after rebooting it said the windows was scanning and repairing my E drive (I have windows on my ssd) so I let it fix it or whatever and then once it finally booted into windows I saw my E drive was not usable and saw in disk manager that it had been put into raw file type and so I tried a quick format but that failed so I though why not do a full format it shouldnt take more than like 5 hours for a sata drive but now I just passed the 48 hour mark and am wondering if the drive has just failed or if I should still give it time. Any help or feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Hey, I realise this problem may have been covered before but I am having a hard time finding anything on it, or rather anything pertaining to my specific case. I also apologize if I've put this in the wrong place, I wasn't sure which board to post on.If you know exactly what I'm talking about (I... kind of don't...) and know where I might find my answer please feel free to simply point me in that direction. Hear me out first, though.I'm fully upgrading my PC, and by that I mean I am replacing everything except for my hard drives and PSU. I'd like to format my SSD and do a clean install of Windows onto it when it's in the new PC. As far as I know I should be able to do that without having to buy a new copy of Windows as my copy is attached to my Microsoft Account. If not... I'll buy a new copy I guess. Hopefully I won't have to, but it's not something I won't stomach for this new PC to become a reality, lol.Anyway, there is a bunch of other stuff on my SSD along with the OS. Some games, docs, music, all my mail, other programs and stuff I don't necessarily need, etc...What I want to do is move all of that stuff onto my HDD (which has more than enough space to hold all of it) and leave ONLY the OS on the SSD, so that I can format it, then do a clean install (from a USB) after I put it in the new PC.I guess I'm asking if this is at all possible and whether I will have to use some kind of backup program and then restore the files on the new PC or if I can just copy stuff from the SSD to the HDD manually while leaving the OS alone, and in that case which folders should I not touch?I understand this seems like a simple problem, but I'm really worried about just moving a bunch of stuff and having it not work properly, or moving stuff I shouldn't, or doing something like moving the drivers for my current GPU (is that even possible??) and having them around where I don't need them.I'm sure you can tell, I'm just very inexperienced and while I can confidently build a PC, all this software and disk management stuff leaves me lost in the woods.Any help would be super appreciated! I'll be happy to provide any more information needed.

What happens if one accidentally or deliberately selects all the files and folder from any android phones root directory (Internal memory only) (not SD card) and deletes ? 1. Will it successfully be able to delete everything or will keep the critical files and delete user data only ? 2. If it does manage to delete all, will it result in a hard brick ? or can be recovered by flashing the recovery again ? 3. It it soft bricks, does one need to still flash the recovery or a simple hard reboot shoud bring all back ? ("all" System files only) I have a oneplus 2 stock 64gb, if we talk in reference to that,it can help me a little more. Thanks guys, CHEERS!

Hello, I added a 250 GB SSD to my PC, along with a 3 TB HDD. I used to have only the HDD and it was working perfectly fine. When I added the SSD, I did a fresh install of Windows. In the installation menu I just deleted all the existing partitions on the HDD (without formatting them!) and I then installed the Windows to the SSD. During the setup, I noticed that the HDD was separated into 2 parts: 2 TB + 1 TB (700+ GB actually), but I thought I could fix this in the Windows. Now it seems that I can only use 2 TB and I formatted it successfully in the Disk Manager, but the remaining 1 TB part is left there as "Unallocated space" and it doesn't give me any options to format it, nor the option to expand the 2 TB part. I did my digging in the realms of internets, downloaded MiniTool Partition Wizard and found out that this unallocated space is formatted as MBR (Master Boot Record). I can't seem to find a solution to format it to NTSC so I can use it only as storage. The HDD is now completely empty and I have all my data on the SSD so I have no HDD data to lose. However, I don't want to reinstall the Windows because I have a fresh install right now and it took me hours to download all the programs and set it up as I like. I also can't just "unplug" the SSD because it's an M.2 and it's located under the GPU so it would be too much fuss. How do I change the format of the HDD from MBR to NTSC or something so I can use its whole capacity? Thanks for your help.

Pardon the noob question, please bear with me. as I've no experience with UEFI Boot / Windows etc. Only till recently I've move to Windows 10. So I'm changing a new Mobo, I'm planning to do a PROPER and CLEAN install of Windows 10 again to avoid any compatibility issues. When I wanted to Format my SSD which is the OS installed. I notice there are 3 Partitions which I didn't make. One was the SSD itself, another is System Reserved I believe, around 100MB ( Couldn't remember exactly ) another I think it's for the UEFI which is about 450MB So I was wondering, what should I do. Do I Delete all the Partitions or do I just Format all three of them and Re-Install Windows ?? ( I have my HDD disconnected while doing Windows install to avoid OS installing the Boot files into the HDD like my previous system....seriously FKed up there )

Hi, So, I've finally ordered components for my new PC and once they arrive and I'll build it, I'm going to try and sell my current PC, other than one SSD I'm taking all of the drives to the new PC. I'm leaving a Samsung 840 EVO with OS in the old PC. But I want to "wipe" it clean but leaving the Windows 7 there. So my question is, is it possible to somehow wipe all data and leave a fresh windows installed? Thanks

Hi! So for a while back I had a problem with my motherboard being faulty with OC-ing the CPU and losing my RAID-arrays randomly. I returned the motherboard to the store that I bought it from and now I'm recieving a new one (yay!). But in the midst of all this, I forgot to delete my RAID0-profile that I made in the Intel configuration with my two SSD's, now only show the disk in Windows on another computer as "SSD RAID0" (which was the array's name). I've tried using Diskpart while being in Windows, but it won't let me continue partitioning the disks: And in Disk Management I only get this message: I don't got any options when I right click it. It is showing the total size of my former RAID0-array (1TB), when the disk actually is only 500GB. What do I do? Pls halp! Best Regards Tom André

Hey guys, I have an SSD with windows 7 installed. I want to move the SSD to my MacBook and install OS X on it. I’m not sure how to do this (I frequently use Mac OS X and Windows 7 but I was never good at partitions and disk formatting and stuff) I’m not interested in any data on the SSD currently and I have an install CD for my MacBook. Can I have some help please? Thanks

Hey guys. So i got myself an SSD but its my first time so i could use some advice before i get it all in there so i dont f it up. I know while installing windows on the SSD i need to unplug my HDD so it goes all right. After than must i format my HDD all together or since i have C: and D: on there (where C: is windows) can i just format the C and combine it with D since on D is almost 700 gigs of data that would be hard for me to somehow transfer?

I was reading an old thread about 1080p 60fps vs 4K and I need the communities input. Im fixing to shoot a video and I need recommendations on format. I have a Galaxy S8 if that matters. The video I plan on shooting is going to be of a Arm Wrestling match between me and my friend. Im looking for ultra detail but smoothness also. Im kinda leaning towards 1080p 60fps seeing that my computer monitor is only 1080p But 4K video gives off more of a fine detail compared to regular 1080p. So what does the community recommend?

Hi guys!! How do I prepare my laptop for selling? What I mean is, I want to make sure that the next owner is not able to recover my personal information. I want to completely wipe all the files and everything from my Laptop, but I want to keep Windows 10, so that the next owner does not have to install Windows. Thanks!! PS- I am using an SSD and not a mechanical hard drive And if you think that completely wiping the SSD, including Windows would be my best bet, then that is also fine.
