Hi! I feel like this should be obvious but for folding, can you run multiple graphics cards without them being in crossfire or sli? I see great local deals on used cards and I would like to boost my PPD. I upgraded my graphics card to be able to accomodate another card but I didn't want to have to search for my exact card. Can I just grab any card and run it independently?

I can understant what is folding ? Do you get any many from it?=like mining??

Hey guys, I don't remember which post I was reading, but it said about folding not being bad for computers as long as fans etc are cleared of dust. I no longer have access to a desktop computer and only have my laptop. The laptop is a Sony Vaio Pro that tends to put the fans on full blast with even the most minute tasks. I was just wondering; will folding constantly, be bad for hardware as it doesn't have as much cooling as a desktop? Is there a recommended amount of time to fold for laptops (would it be bad to leave it folding 24/7)? I usually have the settings to either idle or light. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Well, I was bored and decided to start a new project. I have a few motherboards lying around from old mini PC's and wanted to do something with them. I decided on making a rack to hold them and keep it as small as possible. I started it today and hope to finish is by tomorrow. I really don't have a drawn plan so you will just have to try and follow along These are the motherboards that I have tested and are confirmed working: I will be making the rack out of plexi-glass that I have lying around: Here is the first joint, the adhisive that I am using takes 24 hours to dry so the next update will take a while: Tomorrow I will try to get the project done and find my hotglue so that I do not have to wait 24 hours again. Stay tuned!

Hi guys, I used to have a quite long startup process for F@H, because I always want to have the advanced control, not the web control. Getting there took starting the standard FAHClient via web control, closing the browser tab, right-clicking the small F@H icon in the taskbar, calling up the advanced control mode and maximizing it. Yesterday I was sick of it (I had some alcohol, I admit ). So I wrote a small batch file to do all the stuff for me. Here's the instructions and the code: 1. Move to your FAH install folder [...]\FAHClient and create a new text document using the editor. 2. Copy the following code, and fill in the location of your F@H: cd "[...]\FAHClient" start HideConsole.exe "[...]\FAHClient\FAHClient.exe" start /max FAHControl.exe Do not take away the quotations. Only replace the [...], and make sure that it has the same structure as the following example: "C:\\Program files\FAHClient". The double backslash after the drive name is essential! 3. Save the file as batch, eg. "FAH_for_real.bat". 4. This step is not necessary, but adds some beauty: Create a link on your desktop, and set the icon to be an F@H icon. You can find it in the F@H folder. Done. From now on, you can just double-click the link on the desktop and it will start your background F@H client as well as the maximized advanced control mode. Regards, Tataffe

Just recently resurrected a old mobo of mine with a LGA 1156 socket on it. did some work and here are my specs. Mobo: Asus P7P55D CPU: i5 750 overclocked to 3.5GHz @ 1.3v GPU: 2x Asus GTX 560 TOP OC PSU: 700watt cheapo. Cooling: Thermaltake 760 Plus for CPU only, GPUs are on air. OS: on a 90Gb SSD from Corsair's Force 3 Series. Running Win 8.1 Ram: 3x2Gb Corsair XMS3 Reason: To Fold, hence why im in this forum section with it. Problems occurred: Broke my watertank on the 760plus, i stressed it too much during a cleaning i twisted it with the pump as leverage on accident. i had to reglue it back, now its soo sketchy having it live on tho... i dont want leaks. the MOBO and ram was used in AquaPC therfore was covered in oil. i managed to clean most of the oil. I also noticed one of my pins in the mobo socket was slightly bent up in the corner of the socket. after a gentle push with a small eye glass screw driver, it sadly well fell out. didnt even get it over to where it needed to be. but yes im still running with it. and for some reason even overclocked. i was simply surprised when the system even booted. I also realized, windows 8.1 Reads all 6Gb of ram, but states 2Gb usable, not sure how to correct this. Temps: Anywho thats my Folding Rig quick thread. wasn't gunna make a build log or anything. just figured ill post in the folding fourm to show what people can do with old hardware they are no longer using. Hi, I was wondering, if 28k ppd is roughly the amount I should be getting with my 3570k @ 4.4ghz and a 660ti when folding? Thanks.
-
I just started folding again (see how my power bill goes as to if i continue or not) but i just did two WU with my FX-6300 @ 4.5GHz (down from 4.7GHz to keep temps down it's warm today) and i was only getting just over 200 points for each WU. My estimated ppd was crap, but i just started a core 17 WU on my 7870 and my ppd shot up to over 50,000. Is CPU Folding only viable with Linux and 4p systems?
-
Well, I wanted to start folding with my 7770 that I had lying around. I put it in my PC (I have both AMD and NVIDIA drivers installed) and while Speccy picks it up, Folding@home doesn't. First time folder here.

So i have 2 Titans running in my gaming rig. I bought them because i run a 5760x1080 setup and thought i would benefit from the 6gb of VRAM for the high resolution. So far only a few games have gone over 4gbs of use when playing so im not entirely convinced it would continue to do as much as i thought it would from the get go. I have been folding on the Tech Tips team for a little now and never thought about how the double precision calculations would help. I have since enabled it on both Titans and now make around 107,000 ppd. I love it and would like it to continue but i was also wanting to see if i would be able to get someone to buy me 2 780ti's and swap with them, someone who needs the VRAM and Double precision calculations more then me. I am also thinking about getting rid of my 3 Asus MX239H for a single 2560x1440p monitor. Does anyone want to put in some input here? Id love to hear some ideas from you guys.

What is folding and what is the purpose of it? Even though i read some topics about it, i don't seem to understand it quite well. Can anyone explain me what it is? Thx in advance cheers,

I have seen people talking about "folding". I think its something to do with the cpu or gpu but I haven't figured it out! Can someone please give me an explanation of what "folding" means?

Checking folding status remotely.
kristaps552 posted a topic in Folding@home, Boinc, and Coin Mining
Is there a way to check how's your folding doing remotely, e.g. from work? like whens the next WU going to be completed or anything like that. I'm just curios if it can be done at all. Thanks. -
So I get about 1 million PPD,and I was wondering if this correct(I'm a noob in folding so I don't know) EDIT:now it is passing 1 million

This information was current as of 12/11/2013. Currently neither rigs are folding and I've sold both of them. The BigAdv folding requirements were raised and I now neither meet the specifications. Because of the costs to upgrade I have no intention of changing my rigs. Updated 1/26/2014. This is a thread showing off my two 4P Folding Rigs! The first rig (top shelf) makes ~120k PPD at minimum, the second rig (bottom shelf) makes ~90k minimum, combined for ~210k PPD with BigAdv folding. This only happens when Project 8101 comes along. Rig 1 cost me $250 out of pocket, Rig 2 cost me $200. Combined I pay roughly $60 in energy a month, and that's just for these two rigs... As far as noise levels go, it's about as loud as one of those giant 20" fans you find at the store on the lowest setting. Since they're both complete, I won't have a huge amount of pictures of my progress. I didn't feel the need to detail each and every step, but I'll keep a text-log about my experiences for those interested. 1st 4P Rig Specs: Motherboard: Supermicro H8QME-2+ Processors: 4 AMD Opteron 8425 HE @ 2.1GHz (24-cores total) PSU: Seasonic 760w Platinum RAM: 16GB DDR2 HDD: Seagate 500GB (overkill for folding, but it's multi-use. Mounted in my unused Fractal Define R4 cage) Heatsinks: 4 copper heatsinks, included with bundle Fans: 4 80mm Antec with 3 speed options (I usually have them on medium for noise reasons), 200mm Cooler Master fan & 120mm Bitfenix Spectre fan Case: Custom-built, but mostly went naked. I put the shelf together, named it the Plank 2.0 2nd 4P Rig Specs: Motherboard: Supermicro H8QM3-2+ Processors: 4 AMD 8386 SE processors @ 2.8GHz (16-cores total) PSU: Seasonic 760w Platinum RAM: 24GB DDR2 HDD: 32GB PNY USB Drive Heatsinks: 4 Generic Copper-Aluminum heatsinks Fans: 4 80mm Antec 3-speed (kept on high because these heatsinks are picky), 200mm Cooler Master & 120mm Bitfenix Spectre Case: Custom-built, but mostly went naked. I put the shelf together, named it the Plank 2.0 For both rigs, I use an IBM Model M Keyboard, a $10 Walmart brand mouse, a Dell monitor found at a garage sale, Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste, and a Mionix Deskpad. I thought the deskpad was ridiculous when I first saw it, but after the plywood on my shelf made my skin sting, I freaking love it. The motherboards are held off the surface by a bunch of (wait for it) Rubber Erasers. I had fancy rubber standoffs but lost them sometime during the coffee-table-to-shelf transfer, and the erasers are working perfectly. 1: Initial testing for Rig 1. The 200mm fans were all I had at the time to cool the heatsinks, and this was before I built the shelf. 2: Both rigs fully assembled, also initial testing for Rig 2. I put the wooden shelf together with four 2x4 boards, metal rails, and two plywood sheets for each shelf. Measures 24"x24"x46". The purpose of this was to get the coffee table back, allow me to put two rigs in a more compact space, and have room to add another shelf in the unlikely event I want to add a third rig. I may, or may not, organize the cables one day. 3: The rest are close ups of each rig and different sides of the shelf. I would paint the Plank 2.0, but I don't currently have a garage or any well-enough-ventilated workspace. Both systems are on in the pictures, even though the fans aren't moving because of my camera. Rig 1 Rig 2 4: Wattage draw of Rig 1, Rig 2 is only a few tens of watts difference. 5: My friend suggested this, it's somewhat meaningless but fun to look at. All 24 cores at 100% in Rig 1. Rig 2 takes way too long to load to bother with this, as I'm running it on a USB-drive at USB 1.1 speeds. That's it for pictures - now for the story of Rig 1. The story of Rig 2. Since I'm already here... My personal rig I used previously for folding. http://i.imgur.com/GHP325T.jpg Personal Rig Specs Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D-E Processor: Intel i7-930 2.8GHz (too hot to overclock, idles at 50C) RAM: 10GB DDR3 triple-channel Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti HDDs: WD 7200RPM 500GB (games) and Seagate 7200RPM 500GB (for OS/temporary storage) Heatsink: Hyper 212+ Evo Case: Fractal Define R4 Fans: Two 120mm Bitfenix Spectres (front), two 140mm Fractal fans (exhausts), one generic 120mm (heatsink) PSU: OCZ 550w Gold Fully Modular (the Seasonic PSU in the picture is now being used for the second folding rig, but I can't be bothered to perfect my cable management again so I don't feel like updating that image) As for periphals, I use a Ducky Shine Cherry Black keyboard, Mionix NAOS 3200 mouse, Bose 2.1 speakers, Panasonic RP-HTF600s, ASUS 1080p monitor, Mionix mousepad, Blue Snowball mic, and various other hardware lying at my desk at any given time. Final thanks go to Whaler, [H]ard, Google (for some things), my friend who helped with some Ubuntu knowledge, and Linus & Slick and whoever else for Build of the Week (Nov 1, 2013). Also, thanks for reading!

Hay there guys and gals, I've got an old computer that I've thrown together, the problem now is that the hdd i had thought that now would be a super awesome time to die. i don't really want to buy another copy of windows for this thing. someone suggested that i might be able to boot it with linux on a usb drive. So my question as a complete linux noob is basically is linux going to be the best option and if so what version of it? ubuntu? i really don't know, I've herd other folders like whaler_99 say they use ubuntu. the only thing this system is going to be used for is folding, just turn on, tell it to fold and walk away. Thanks in advance! Edit: also if anyone could point me in the direction of an awesome intro to linux that would be super awesome

Guten Abend, So im folding for around 2 months now with my gtx780 and from time to time my Display Driver just crashes and i have to restart folding with my gpu. It just goes back to 0% and i can do it again. For some reason its not only with my current driver (331.65) but also with a lot of them further back in time like the 320's and even 310's. Im not sure if its a special type of Work Unit which is causing it to fail all the time or if they are always different but either way this sucks big time! Any ideas why i have these problems? Also, is it normal that my ppd fluctuates really hard between 80k and 200k? (most of the time its around 120k) Thx and greetings Edit: System specs in the sig >.>

I used to have some folding problems a while back, so I just stopped. Since I upgraded from win 7 to 8, and with a whole new OS, folding might not be as troublesome anymore.... Buuuuut, I'm not sure about the current client configs anymore. As in, what flags and what not is the way to go these days, I'm still folding on a 4 core and a Nvidia GPU.... Is it still just client-type: advanced to worry about

After seeing many forum users with the pretty badges and after doing my research, I've now become interested in folding. Since I now have a new system, my old PC is now a door stopper. So I've decided to put my old rig to good use. The only problem is that I don't even know where to start. So I've come here for your help, since I've seen that lots of you have been folding for a long time. Yes, I've read all the forum threads about "how to fold", but these threads just keep leading to others, and I don't know how to begin. So... 1. How do I start folding? 2. What do I have to do to get those folding badges? Thank you for reading and any help is very much appreciated -
My folding work unit count is wrong as shown below, would this have been caused by me failing WUs? Is there anything I can do about it, I hate seeing credit for something I didn't do Also the point count seems to be right though Appreciate any help given

Im trying to see if my 4770k is stable at 4.2GHz at 1.118v, and was wondering if Folding@home is a good "stress test". Since i thought the time that i could spend just maxing my cpu for no reason, i could be maxing it for a good cause lol
