Hey yall. I’m new to Linux, and ended up following SomeOrdinaryGamer’s guide for setting up Linux mint 21.3 with the Cinnamon DE. I’ve been really enjoying how easy and usable it is with the exception of *literally anything not included in the software manager app* For example, I tried to download an indie game on itch.io that runs natively on Linux. I follow the instructions on the site which was to extract the folder and simply run the file, but when I do that it asks me what app I want to launch it with. How am I supposed to know? It was a .ags file. I wish I could say this is the only time it’s happened but it’s not. I tried to install openrgb, again it asks me what app I want to open the file with. I have no clue. I’m used to just clicking on applications and having windows open it with whatever makes sense without input from me. What am I missing here? I just don’t understand how your average joe like me is supposed to have all of these things to open up different files on tap without knowing anything about what should be required. Do I need to update my software manager? Do I need to install some packages? I have no idea. I want to continue my overall good experience so far on Linux but this is particularly frustrating since I feel like I’m basically not able to do anything that’s not in the included software manager.

My wife's iPhone randomly stopped working, in the sense of only allowing an internet connection for meta apps (i.e. WhatsApp and Instagram). All other Apps (including settings and safari and even the App Store) couldn't connect to the internet (Wi-Fi and cellular). So we tried everything Turning it off and on again Hard reset (Volume Up, Down and Side button) Backup the iPhone and restore it via the Backup (through Win 11) Reset all together And only with a fresh slate, it started to connect to the internet again. As soon as we load the backup onto the iPhone, it stops working again. Now I wanted to save all of her media (photos & videos) and did it via the method in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YafOzenheLU So my question is: I have two huge folders with all the same files renamed to .jpg and .mp4 and I want to filter for working Photo and Video Files. Is there a quick way to do that, or do I have to go through 100+ folders and check every of the 200+ files in every folder? Tysm in advance!

Hi, as the title states I'm looking for the files to do a bmc update on an old intel s2600cp board. I'm unsure whether it's a cp2 or cp4. Unfortunately it's discontinued by intel and they've only put the BIOS update files on their website. If anyone has them or know where to get them it'd be greatly appreciated. By the by, the reason for me needing the update is that since one of the CPU's are faulty and I've taken it out, the fans are stuck on max speed at all times and I need that fixed, so if ya'll have any other way of fixing that issue I'd love to hear it. Thanks.

Today I transferred a game from a SanDisk external 1TB SSD to my Steam Deck. The folder has the expected size, but as I dig deeper into the filesystem, I get only empty folders. Why is that? The Deck isn’t even a month old and I never changed the m.2 or opened it up. Edit: I realize it doesn’t seem to show any files accept trash, pictures, desktop, etc.

Good Morning/Afternoon everyone, Slight/Big issue at Work, We Rolled out OneDrive backup and the Finance Managers computer has gone a bit silly and looking for a solution So, In the "This PC" you got Desktop, Documents, and Pictures, these are all the things we're creating a backup for through One Drive, the issue is, sometime in the past without us realizing the Finance Manager's "This PC" Documents Folder has turned into his Shared Network P: Drive, so OneDrive when it backed up his " Documents " actually backed up the Shared P: Drive and Took a bunch of documents for storage only on OneDrive, so now no one else in the company can access them, I've tried forcing it to store a Physical Copy of it on his Device hoping it would place them back in the same way it took them, thinking the Documents folder ( that is actually the P: Drive ) and restore it back to normal, but now they're all Solid Green ticked, and still not there >.> If you can please help

Hi, if I choose the upgrade option on WIN 10 installer will it keep my settings and apps like mail and outlook accounts, emails, calendars. I do not have gmail and such so that's why I am asking. And in the calendar app I have pretty crucial informations that I have been writing for more than 4 years. Another question, where can I find my windows calendar and mail files ? Where does Windows store it? And if i can find it somewhere and save it, can I load calendar data into calendar or mail or outlook again? Thanks.

I noticed that if I right click on any file on my W10 PC and click Properties, the Accessed time/date changes to whatever the current date/time is. Why is this? What good is trying to check when a file was last accessed if every time you check it, it's just going to change to whatever the current date/time is? I'm going to check on another PC when I get a chance to see if it's maybe just something with my PC, unless someone can confirm this is how W10 is now, or maybe has always been.

Hey, earlier today I deleted a folder containing 200GB+ of files that ideally I would quite like to keep. I was deleting another file, and did not realise this other folder was selected. Because of its size it did not go into the recycle bin, and due to it being on an SSD it deleted very quickly before I had a chance to react. I have used various free file recovery apps, and decided to buy OnTrack EasyRecovery. It has been able to recover quite a lot of the files, some of which even have metadata (for example, mp3 files having artists etc.) and whilst there are a few 0 Bytes files, most of them seem to have their original file size back. The issue is, none of these files let me open them. For example, I'll open a PSD in Photoshop and it thinks its not a photoshop compatible file, or an mp4 in VLC etc. I'm assuming the files are corrupted somehow, so does anyone know how to fix them? Any suggestions would be appreciated NOTE: I still have the original drive, and have not saved, deleted or done anything to any other files on the drive to stop them from being overwritten.

Hello everyone, I have a 4 TB hard drive that is full of stuff ranging from important documents for work to Google Takeout files to photos I took on an iPod Touch 14 years ago. Up to this point, I have basically shoved everything into the drive into random folders and I think it's time I started organizing everything. Before I spend several weeks going through everything, does anyone have any software suggestions for assisting in this? I know I'll have to go through a lot of it myself, but if there is software that can help cut down the time on this, I'd like to check it out. Basically is there software that will help with the following: Deleting duplicate files Deleting certain types of files (ex. .exe, .aac, or any other obscure file format that I don't plan on using Sorting certain types of files and putting them in folders (ex. JPEGs into a "Pictures" folder, .docs into a "Documents" folder, videos in a "Videos" folder, ect.) Software for organizing photos and videos and putting them in folders I don't mind if it's free or paid software as long as it works. And if you have tips on how to get started on organizing files (and maintaining them), I'd really appreciate it. Thanks. Have a good one!

When I started using Windows PowerToys Run, it warned me while searching that not all files were indexed. I went to Windows Settings and set it to index all files. Even after that, PowerToys still thinks not all files on my computer are indexed. Why?

Hi, so a bit ago I did a big upgrade with new mobo ram and cpu. I struggled to even get windows 11 installed as it kept giving bsod and install errors saying it didn’t have the required files even after formatting the usb stick and redownloading multiple times. I finally got it to work but now it’s giving me disk errors and corrupt file errors on steam even after clearing the cache and redownloading the game. It did however work on a small download of ≈300mb on steam but for games like destiny 2 and cs:go it keeps giving these errors. I’ve tried downloading on another drive with the same result, both of which are fine according to the windows drive scanner. I did get the destiny to launch by launching it from outside of steam but it has lots of crashes saying something about the files not being there. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm looking to see if someone would know how to change the default function of the file-dragging feature. While holding a file over a different directory, you can drop it like that to "MOVE" the file to that directory, pressing and holding "shift" allows you to "COPY" the file to that directory. When moving files from one drive to another drive on the PC, it changes from "MOVE" to "Copy" for the default drop feature. I would like to know how to change the default drop feature "COPY" replaced with "MOVE". I move files more than copy, and with a chunky racing wheel strapped to my desk, reaching over every time to hold shift can be a pain at times. Windows 10 Home, OS build 19045.2364

Can you see what files were on a pc if it‘s factory reseted?
MilkShaker775 posted a topic in Windows
My question is, if you can see any kind of data that was on a Pc, before you factory reseted it choosing to delete all data. But does it really delete all data, or can you after setting up windows again, somehow see what data and account logins or whatever were on the drive? And if you could still access data would it be a difficult process to arrange that? I just wonder that because I sold my old pc and the only thing I did was a reset. I would appreciate an answer, thank you.- 5 replies

Hello, I am currently saving some old videos on to my hard drives. I plan on setting up a NAS in which I'll probably use 3-4 drives and RAID 5 (if there's a better option please inform me). I was wondering if it would be as simple as moving the files over to the new RAID setup to have it automatically turned into RAID 5 format, if I have to use a program, or if it's simply not possible. Thanks in advance for the help.

How do I give myself/my user account permission to edit, read and execute all files in all locations. For example on my raspberry pi 4 I want to give myself permission to edit all the files and folders in /var/ via the built in files GUI rather than in sudo in terminal. What do I do?

Drive 1 is a SATA M.2 SSD from one of my laptops It's the only drive that actually fits in that laptop that's why it's the boot drive I had to put my files on now I'm on my main Laptop and I'd like to access those files but I don't really know how I'm using Windows 10 Home and that drive has Windows 10 Home on it too Actually, now that I see this, I'm wondering why my other drive I have Archlinux on doesn't appear, not even in diskpart. (and I don't want to use linux to put those files from one drive on the other because I don't know how to use linux that well yet)

Hi, I use a preamble file with my .tex documents using \include{preamble.tex} in my main file. Since, \include does not support global path, I have to make multiple copies of the preamble.tex file in locations of different main .tex files. Also, it is easier to send any tex source to others this way, I simply send the folder/ keep it in the cloud. However, when I want to modify the preamble.tex file, say add a new package or a new macro, I have to painstakingly go through all the copies and change them accordingly. Is there a way I can link the copies such that if one of them gets updated all of them do? I use windows btw. Thanks for the help in advance.

So basically i got a new build and tested my old hdd, but had a problem with it because it only detects the old system i3 8100 which my i5 9400 now indicate 4c 4t so i had to reset windows without files being deleted, but don't know where to find my files. as when installing windows i remember i had a spare hdd so i used that for my i5 9400 to install a freshly new windows and just use the old hdd as a storage to check my old files. but not i don't know specifically where to find my files, such as video, files, photo, document, and etc.

i have a computer running linuxmint. i want to be able to access its files from my windows 10 pro computer. i decided to use samba. i used this guide and this video to help me setup samba. setup seemed to work fine. i then tried to access the files from windows by typing in \\{linuxcompip}\share in windows file manager. it then asked me to login so i typed in the name and password i setup but then it tells me that windows cant access the files. on this form someone had a different issue i did, but i thought that it was similar enough that i could try it. (bad mistake), i tried this fix and now when i type \\{linuxcompip}\share again, but this time it doesn't ask me for a password, it just straight up tells me i don't have permission to access the files. i didn't like that my files were not password protected, so i tried to reverse what the form told me to do, but i wasn't successful. anyone here who knows what i should look at to see what the problem is?

I don't know if this is just me, But I recently tried downloading Unreal Engine Because I just learned programming and I wanted to make some quick game just because of boredom. So, I started downloading Unreal Engine From epic games because It's a faster way to do because I already have epic games installed and I can just click Unreal Engine and boom magic! Unreal Engine is downloading. Now the issue I'm facing here and wanting help for is, because when I am downloading Unreal Engine it takes more space than it says it will. My Disk was 218GB left, Unreal Engine was supposed to take only 13GB out of my disk and leave me 205GB, Which Is fine by me. But Unreal Engine left me with only 185GB which is a little bit over limit. I don't want this much space being taken from my Disk! I don't even have anything else to delete all I have is My games, Important Files and that's it! So I cannot delete any of those, since I use those applications every day. But my question here is, Why did it take so much more space than said? I am typing this while my download is being finished, So I am wondering what if those are temporary files? What are those Files worth about 20-25 More Gigabytes? those are my questions. I hope I get my storage back when the download finishes. Bye everyone! by ElectroNeedsHelpOnline
