What type of switches would be needed for Google Fiber since its 1 Gigabyte speeds, 10 gigabit Right? Meaning that I would need a 10 gigabit card in my pc for that to work right? Any other equipment needed?

source:http://www.eetimes.com/document.asp?doc_id=1331615 The big barrier to a more widespread implementation of optical-based data transmission is cost . Getting rid of the costly optical-to-electrical converters in traditonnal optical fiber would go a long way towards the ubiquity of photonics in general .

Hey guys, So at the moment I am on a FTTP connection, and I should have a downstream rate of 100/Mbps and a upstream rate of 40/Mbps but at the moment I am barely getting close to the 100, and just reaching the 40 of the upstream rates. Does anyone have any tips of getting the maximum available out of my connection? I've come to the conclusion it may be my router throttling the connection but am unsure as I don't have a upgraded router to test this theory with. The only reason I believe it's the router, is because when I plug directly into the NTD (fiber junction) inside my house I get the full speeds available. Could anyone shed some light, on upgrades I could do? Current Router: TP-Link TD-W8970

Hi, I'm wondering if it is possible to 'split' an incoming internet/fibre connection into four seperate SSIDs? Basically I'm building four new houses, three of which will be rented out (I'll live in the fourth one). Would it be feasible to have one fibre connection come in to my server room in my house then split up to the other houses w/ seperate SSIDs, passwords and such (also traffic monitoring/bandwidth ? Planning to wire up the homes with cat5e. Looking into ubiquiti products to manage all of this, including security cameras. Im thinking it would be a disaster to have four different incoming connections vs having only one fibre connection coming in and then splitting it up. Thanks.

I just got gigabit internet from AT&T a few days ago, and I'm using a wireless connection. I get around 200 up/down average, and the router is in the room next to where my PC is. This is the network adapter I have. Are there any tweaks I can do to the network to get better speeds?

That's a max theoretical rate of 6.5GB/sec folks. http://www.pcgamer.com/nokia-tests-insanely-fast-52gbps-fiber-to-lucky-customers-in-south-korea/

In my small town in Croatia we have explicitly copper wired network options because they find it expensive to drill some holes and replace the cables with fiber optic ones (so i've been told). Is there a way for me to lets say buy an fiber optics converter that converts the copper wire to the fiber optics cable so i can get faster and a more reliable network or there is no way to simply do it? My current down speed is 7.6 Mbps and upload is 0.45 Mbps. The funniest part is that i am paying my ISP for a down speed of 25 Mbps but they simply can't get it through to me...

Hello I have a Media converter RJ45 to SFP (1GB/s, TP-Link MC220L) is it possible to use a 4GB/s GBIC also SFP not SFP+ (they are cheaper for me). Ofcause I dont exspect more than 1GB/s. Thank you for your help in advance.

So I up graded to Comcast gigabit internet for 70$ a month. I own my router which is capable of 10gig speeds and I use wired cat6 cables. My computer is all custom but I don't want to list all the parts but it's overkill and has a 10gig nic. When I test my speeds with Googles built in speed I get 50 down and 5 up. On the speed test site that everybody knows (speedtest.net) I get 230 to 250 up and 10 to 12 down. Same on the Comcast speed test too. Does Comcast need to come out and install optic cable or something. I'm really upset with Comcast (even though I always am cause they are the only company in my area and they have poor business practices towards the customer and poor data tracking and over charging customers and throttling speeds regularly.) I need the upload speed and down speed for large texture files for animations and 4k raw video I edit and upload. How do I get my full speed I'm paying for and should they charge me less cause they can't deliver the speed I need.

I just got a 100Mbps Dedicated Duplex line Fiber to the Home ( I mean seriously not even multiple passive splitters ), they convert 2.5 gbps incoming line to 25 X 100mbps connections ensuring no slow downs for $15 dollars a month with absolutely NO Data Caps. They do use Carrier Grade NAT (so we cant use it for server purposes unless you pay $75 a year for static IP). Its not even economies of scale, the next known customer for this particular ISP lives 250m away from me and I am on the main road with multistory apartments on all sides. They also told me the only reason they do not give Gigabit right now is that almost everyone has only 100mbps RJ45 Ports in their routers ( P.S In India we buy the cheapest routers and access points). Although they can literally convert all the connections to gigabit by just removing their limit. And they are just withholding till another ISP matches their current prices after which my ISP can quickly enable Gigabit and start taunting about the new USP. This is soo wierd to me, I mean 2 years ago my broadband was 2 mbps till 8gb 512 kbps afterwards. Now I have 100mbps no FUP fiber for a lesser price. Just Wow. Let me know how much do you pay for your internet

Hey Folks, I live back in India and we are currently experiencing a fiber boom of ridiculous proportions (1 Gigabit Internet with 2TB of Data cap post which I'll get 10mbps Unlimited for around $70 ). I am getting a Fiber to the Building connection. The internet guys do offer the ability to run Fiber to the Home if I bear the cost of the Customer Premise equipment. Since I already have a router with an SFP port its not much really for me. The problem is the people installing these crazy internet connections have no idea on what Optical Fiber Cable they use, or what connector they use. I being a mechanical engineer have no idea either. They tell me that they can terminate a new Fiber connector at my rooftop cable entry point of my apartment. But I have to patch the male connector from Female and run it to my Network equipment wherein a wall port where the wire will be terminated into a wall port. I have to do this all without knowing if it is a multimode or a single mode fiber, and what type of connector it uses. Kindly let me know if there is a standard in fiber cabling to the home. If so what connector it uses, and if it is duplex or simplex. If there is no standard in FTTH connections kindly let me know on what exact details I need to know before purchasing the Optical Fiber Cable and wiring it to my room including what Female and Male Patch Connectors it uses. ( Pictures welcome ) Thank you all in advance

Modem Router fiber slow wifi connectivity Im from the Philippines and my ISP is PLDT. I have Fiber plan 50mbps. I came with a Modem-Router all in one, problem is the connection via wifi is slow but in wired connection to the router to my PC is very good i can get up to 48mbps+- stable. One more problem is the modem-router combo only gives off internet in LAN port1 and in LAN port2,3,4 doesn't give internet to the device. Bottom line the router that they give is really shitty. I live with 5 people that only use the internet via wifi and all i hear from them is rants about how slow the internet is but in my case it is fast because im the one connected to the router via ethernet cable to my pc. So how would i address this issue? Should I buy a new router, or a new router-modem? Cause im thinking about getting a ASUS RT-AC5300, ASUS RT-AC88U or ASUS RT-AC87U. But another problem is would this asus routers iv mentioned would the routers give internet via all the LAN ports not just one port? Thank you hope i get help

**PLEASE DON'T SHOW IP ADDRESSES** Well, I kind of have look on the forum. But I don't see a section where you we can show off our internet speeds! I recommend that you use this layout so we all can see what you use! Wired or Wireless? What Cable? - Internet Provider? - How much you pay? U/D? - Speedtest.net results? I've recently moved to Japan and just setup an internet contract. Currently I'm getting fiber from the wall and it goes into a GEPON ONU that NTT (line supplier) gave me. For reference it looks like this one: https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTCMDV2D2ojJT0NhZm0mSGiUCYF9X_iN_GxfD91DVSnN7TvxA8 From what I understand this acts as a modem. From there I just use the Ethernet out to connect my PC. I've never had fiber before so I'm a little confused, right now to connect I have to use Windows 10's dial-up interface for a PPoE connection. Is there no way for it to work like ADSL ones where you just plug in the Ethernet cable and it works(after you configure it once)? Since my laptop doesn't have an Ethernet port I've bought some janky USB to Ethernet adapter, is that the cause? Since I want to connect more than a single Ethernet port allows me, I'm in the market for a wireless router, would the setup be equivalent to an ADSL line? Finally, do you guys have recommendations for routers? I was looking at the following: Netgear Nighthawk R7000 ~100$ ASUS RT-AC68U ~150$ TP-Link Archer C7 ~100$ All seem somewhat popular, would I go wrong with any of these? Thank you in advance.

Hello all .... Like the title says .... i have single mode fiber optic core..... a lot of it ... Pic with specs (I have several rolls) I need ideas to do something with it ... anyone? Thanks in advance!!!

When does everyone think that 10Gb Ethernet should be a standard on all motherboards and modems/routers, i mean back when i migrated from dial-up to adsl 10/100 was normal now 10/100/1000 is normal and adsl+ hasn't been much better but with fiber coming to Australia and some people already have it eventually 10Gb Ethernet will be a normally everyday standard anyone out there have any thoughts to this?

Hey Everyone! I am a streaming/content creator and I play Fortnite. I was thinking of ways I could up my streams and content and I thought about upgrading my internet. Only issue is that i'm already maxed at speeds but im still getting weird results. Im suppose to be getting 1000 and 20, but im getting like 800 and 17. Streaming and content is business and I talked with the ISP and we would be able to upgrade to fiber. I'm waiting for my response from what other speeds they have as of now, because getting a higher upload would be nice for streaming/bitrate so it isnt pixilated. I am also getting around 60-70 ping on fortnite and I am in North Dakota. When I got to my school and play on my laptop I get 20-40 instead. Would getting fiber help with this? I know its possible to get these speeds because ive seen it myself. I just want to get a lower ping and be able to stream quality content, would fiber help this? Id rather not have to move near the fortnite servers to get a better ping, haha. I have the money to be able from the "support a creator" program and from subs and whatnot, but getting fiber ran would be easier and cheaper then renting a apartment in a place in NY or California.

Hey Everyone, first of, hope you're having a wonderful day! I'm looking to try and set up a fiber backbone that will realistically be able to do 10Gb today and if possible move to 40Gbe+ later on down the line. current infrastructure is 2 servers, one for vm's /plex provider(unraid), the other acting as both high speed nas and longterm HDD storage (timemachine backups and the like)(freenas). on the network we typically see 15 devices at the low point with a maximum of around 40. everything from phones to laptops to proper workstations, networked receivers etc. Everything is currently running 1gbe rj45, except for workstations which are a combination of 2 or 4 1gbe links bonded few things: reason for fiber backbone is that the total length of the space is 100' by 50' 2 floors, not to mention that we'd be able to upgraded the receivers down the line if/when the need or opportunity arrises for a network upgrade. my current thinking for the network is to deploy Mikrotik switches because of their support for 4*10Gb SFP+ on inexpensive switches (crs305 and crs309). For router was thinking going for the RB 4011 since it has fiber and ethernet, and if I go Mikrotik for the AP's the 4011 is afforded with a 4*4 MU-MIMO on 5GHz and 3*3 on the 2.4 band. Thoughts? Proposed set up is as such, from top down view https://imgur.com/a/O5l8bKV For AP's I'm fairly open. Was thinking either Unify or mikrotik,

I recently got a new fiber internet connection but the problem is the only way i can access the internet is by using the Dial-Up option and manually connecting to the internet. Moreover, when I use Dial up my internet becomes about 5 times slower. I have been occasionally been able to automatically connect to the internet few times randomly when i turn on my PC . I have tried contacting my ISP but they can't seem to find a solution. In the image provided you can see 2 connections : 1 is the ethernet which shows as unidentified and the other is a WAN PPOE which shows up due to connecting through Dial up. I have tried using other DNS, CMD commands and updating drivers but nothing seems to work. Note : I am presently using the company's modem directly without a router.

I have xfinity fiber coming into my home and we have their provided modem router combo box. The fiber line plugs right into the back of the modem. Do I have to use their modem or could I just get a fiber to ethernet converter?

Over the last few years myself and many neighbours, businesses etc have grown tired of the 1mb up 0.5mb down speeds in our area. Unfortunately fibre is not available yet and there does not seem to be any plans to have it come to our area any sooner, however, there is a fibre cabinet which is close but is just barley out of range... As a replacement myself and many other have been purchasing 4g, but, of course, that comes with the unfortunate limit of a max of 100gb / 30mb up or unlimited data with the sames speeds as we have with normal broadband. Would anybody happen to have any experience in community funding / pushing for fibre? If it helps, I am currently in London - Kensington & Chelsea / Hammersmith & Fulham which are considered to be some of the more prestigious areas of London, so almost everything is up to modern standards except a few parts ... It would be a great help for any insight you can offer as I believe 360p video has left me scarred. Also, don't worry about the location being so precise, It is a vast location I gave Thanks in advance, Lex

Hey Team, Alright, this one is a doozy. Staring last week during a stream, I got kicked off StreamLabs. After tinkering with my web browser (Chrome), I noticed that I could not open Google.com, Facebook, etc. BUT! I was able to get to others, and have limited access. With YouTube, I was able to access it, but the thumbnails were not loading. With Twitch.TV, I was not able to play the videos, but the chat still worked. Now after dealing with Verizon, who is my ISP, and changing the Router and ONT, I still have the issue. Further more, and this is where it gets interesting, I only have this issue once my roommate turns his computer on and a little time passes. The known temporary fix is to reset the router, and not have have my roommate use his computer. Which I don't think he likes. Current facts: Once this starts happening, this starts affecting other devices Happens over Wireless and LAN New router New ONT (Optical Network Terminal) Internet connection come from the street ->ONT->Router->Switch->My computer and Roommates. Been like this for about 3 months and no issues till now. Virus and Malware checks come back clean. I have a brand new build from November 2019 His build is from 2016 Please let me know if you've seen this issue, and what was done to resolve. Thanks everyone!

Hello, so like 6 months ago i was getting some help on here but that thread died so im making a new one! So i have a Catalyst 4948-10GE and i got the x2 modules, a compatible transceiver and a fiber cable. But the thing is it just... doesn't work. Like nothing, computer shows no networks, and the little light on the switch next to the x2 isn't on. Is there something in the terminal i need to do to get it to work?

I currently have a 500/500 Mbps PON Connection (don't know whether it is GPON or EPON), but the router supplied by my ISP performs extremely poorly.I've been planning to replace it with this GPON router :https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32799325864.html?spm=a2g0s.8937460.0.0.62fc2e0eRhskotspecially since this one has POTS port, eliminating my need to use a separate VOIP gateway adapter. Will this work if my line is EPON ?This is what my router page shows : https://imgur.com/a/vT2TEvY
