  1. Morning all, there's a used Samsung PM1725B locally, trouble is the card is designed for PCIE x8 and my motherboard (gigabyte b550 ud ac) has open slots that are physically x16 but wired for x4 or x1, what issues will occur running this card in those slots? Also ive heard tell that any cards will run in a slot with fewer lanes than what a card is wired for as long as there is not a physical limit but i couldnt find a solid source on this.
  2. Hello, I wish to create an automatically updating flowchart from my folders. There is a lot of them so I wish to avoid having to manually enter them into MS visio or something. I wish to do this so that I could better document and navigate my folders, files and what is in them. If it matters, they are on a network drive btw. Is there any software that would allow me to do this?
  3. Long story short… bought a server off Craigslist. Whatever, 700$, 2x Xeons, 384g of ram. Something. Quite a score right? well the thing is loud. I get it, passive heatsinks. Duh, it’s a server Let’s watercool the CPUs! Done. Now it’s confused. Pump is DC/molex - straight full power, yet at 37c all 10 fans go super fast then idle and back again There aren’t any fan curve options in the BIOS let alone a Cpu header, I just see fan0-6. Tore apart the manual too, watchdog and stuffs TLDR; got a server, fans are always super loud. So STFU, watercool it. Now it’s 100% to 20% and back to 100. Annoying. help? (Yellow duck as a life raft) ~ughh
  4. Hey, so I have this project at uni - I have to design (theoretically) a digital system for submitting, tracking, storing and analyzing data about a lot of electrical and mechanical machines in a given industry (say the railroad one in my country). Since they log all info on paper, my job is to design a digital system for that. So apart from databases, a client of some sort and all that, I have to look into enterprise servers. Enterprise networking is mandatory imo as well, however that isn't on focus. Anyone in the industry able to give some information about respected vendors and what not? I know HPE is used a lot for this, but I don't know much about enterprise specific stuff. Considering the workload, the server should be more storage based (since we don't have much for the cpus to do let alone the gpus...). I guess a decentralized solution would be best if budget allows it, but even if we stick to a single server rack, what should I aim for? Also not sure on the optimal topology to deploy this system in all together. Since it's for a national institution, it has to be pretty legit, although quite cheap considering we're talking about the Balkans haha. I can and will do my research in the web, I'm just curious as to what you guys would be able to tell me on the subject of enterprise servers (ofc not the most expensive stuff, nor heavy compute oriented). Thanks in advance and cheers!
  5. So I was scouring eBay for some graphics cards when I came across an AMD v340 engineering sample for like 1500 bucks. What was super cool about this card is that it supported GPU virtualization. Unfortunately its way underpowered for what I need so I looked to see if Nvidia had anything available to pros or enterprise and I found the A6000 that supported their vGPU tech. They claim that with aggregation, the performance increase is close to linear, but I'm not sure if that would apply to something like a game engine that uses gaming drivers. The goal here is to have a dynamic server that can allocate GPU resources on the fly for several tasks, including a kick-ass gaming rig with that aggregated gpu. In principle if it scaled the way that I hope, It would make a single virtualized GPU that is 2x more powerful than a 3090 (the A6000 is like 10% faster I'm pretty sure). Why do I need such power for games? I work in the VR industry and I've been wanting to work with an ultra high fidelity VR game to demo a piece of hardware. Does anyone have experience with vGPUs or testing this kind of aggregation?
  6. Hi All A friend from work helps with a charity and they're wanting a new server for their site and she wondered if I could help, they're based in the UK so parts have been selected for that region. Basically they are set to use this commerce software and the following page lists the requirements (they need Tier 4): http://webhelp.monsooncommerce.com/GAR/Monsoon/Monsoon.htm#Monsoon-Pro/System-requirements/System-requirements.htm%3FTocPath%3DAbout%20your%20system|System%20Requirements|_____0 Using the details listed on the site, (which aren't great) it seems that a 3600 is the best CPU for their requirements, but no details on RAM speed, latency, storage space etc... I came up with a build here but it would be good for people to critique it and advise on alternatives/answer my direct questions as I don't have much experience on the server side. Build: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Deuteronomy/saved/#view=Q2kfvK CPU - Ryzen 5 3600 According to the monsooncommerce site's link to passmark, is going to have the best performance for the lowest cost. It apparently unofficially supports unbuffered ECC memory, however Pcpartpicker doesn't list it as being compatible. Does anyone have experience with Ryzen 3rd gen and ECC? I think it should be used for a commerce site/server. CPU Cooler - stock CPU cooler MOBO - Asus PRIME B550-PLUS Solid board that apparently also supports ECC. RAM - Kingston 16 GB (1 x 16 GB) DDR4-2666 CL19 Cheapest, reliable ECC DDR4 memory I could find. Would need 2 of these for the advised 32GB. SSD - Kingston A400 240 GB 2.5" Good, cheap SSD that should be able to handle the OS and the other system requirements and act as a cache for the HDD. They said enterprise is needed, would you suggest something else? HDD - Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Good, cheap HDD that I hope will be enough for them currently. I have no idea how much storage they require but additional ones could always be added. I would raid these together and get 2 to allow for redundancy, more if necessary with more complex raid arrays. They said enterprise is needed, would you suggest something else? GPU - Asus GeForce GT 710 2 GB Again, good and cheap. It is apparently something that is used in enterprise machines a lot and with having a passive cooler, should last a long time. The CPU doesn't have onboard memory so a cheap GPU would be needed as I don't think they will be remoting in. Case - Corsair 200R Cheap, good enough, comes with 2 fans, has a drive bay. PSU - Corsair TXM Gold 550 W 80+ Gold Cheap, good, efficient, wanted good reliability, warranty and 80+gold, I doubt the modularity is necessary. Fans - ARCTIC F12 Silent 37 CFM 120 mm I always max out my fans for cooling but also due to allowing me to keep things relatively quiet. I think having more airflow is only going to help, but also include redundancy for other fans which makes sense for a server. We've asked the guy in charge for a few more details such as budget, if they know the storage required etc but this was the cheapest but reliable one I could come up with. Let me know your thoughts! Many thanks
  7. Howdy folks! So i recently became the proud owner of this thing: That right there is a DELL PowerEdge R510 server. It's rocking dual 6-core Xeons and a total of 32GB's of ECC RAM. By today's standards, this really isn't anything impressive, but that's exactly why i got it. the Xeons in there are the 'L' variant, for low power! This is relevant because i have a 4U server running in the same rack 24/7 with dual 8-core Xeons 128GB RAM and a 2080Ti running on pretty much full load. This means my power bill is high enough as is. I got it on the cheap from someone who in turn got it from a datacenter where it got decommissioned. Anyway, it now lives happily in my rack! One problem tough: my rack lives right next to my desk. And this box is not made for silence. Nothing made for the enterprise ever really is. So yeah, guess it needs some fixes then! Inside this thing has a total of 5 80MM fans for primary cooling, along with redundant PSU's which both have a 40mm fan. the 80MM fans arn't actually all that bad. They're definitely audible at idle, but it's the PSU fans that really make the noise. under a heavy load the 80MM's also get to screaming tough. DELL uses proprietary connectors for all of them, but luckily the pinout is still just PWM. This means i should be able to just cut the connectors and solder them to normal 80MM PWM fans. The PSU's also use little 4-pin connectors. They kinda look like the connector you would find on some GPU's. Noctua actually makes some fans specifically for this. They have a couple of adapter cables included with them which should fit in this no poblemo. So yeah, that's all i got so far. I have 5 80MM Arctic F8 PWM fans and 2 Noctua NF-A4X20 FLX fans on order for this project, and we'll see if cooling is still adequate when i swap them in. One potential problem is the difference in RPM between the DELL OG fans and the Arctics. The Arctic fans only spin to a max of 2000RPM, which should mean they're nice and silent, but the server expects them to ramp up to 6500-7000RPM. This means i'll probbaly have to deal with a constant low-RPM warning. AFAIK this server doesn't really restrict anything with that warning going, but you never know untill you try i guess. The second potential problem is cooling. The original fans push a buttload of air, and the CFM of the Arctics doesn't even come close. The Noctua's in the PSU's should be fine i think. If it doesn't produce enough cooling for the CPU's, i guess i'll have to figure something out. I hear Alpacool makes some awesome 2U radiators anyway, that's it. Expect updates as the ordered parts come in.
  8. hey everyone! currently for my house, i am running a network stack from unifi, (Pro-4 Gateway -> XG Ag switch -> 16 port POE, 24 Port Gigabit) and i was wondering if there was a cable that exists where it is a DAC cable, but SFP/SFP + on one end, to standard RJ45 on the other. and it it could be bidirectional that would be amazing, or if not i could make it work too.
  9. My PC has an 8 TB hard drive, that has less than 1 TB free. I am planning to move my PC into a new case (a Fractal Design R6) and I figure that's as good a time as any to add more storage. I was thinking adding a 6 TB hard drive would do the trick. Looking on Newegg I discovered that the least expensive 6 TB hard drives are labeled as "Enterprise" drives. My understanding is that normally you wouldn't use an Enterprise drive in a desktop because they are engineered to work in a more rigorous server environment and thus more expensive. It would follow though that an Enterprise drive should work fine in a PC. Am I wrong? Newegg has a Seagate 6 TB Enterprise drive on sale for $94.50. https://www.newegg.com/seagate-st6000nm0034-6tb/p/N82E16822178526 There was an even cheaper one for $82, also Enterprise, but it said in the description it would not work in a personal computer. The one linked above does not say that (that I noticed) but does say the firmware is "maximized for Enterprise RAID systems." I do not plan to use a RAID configuration. They have a 6 TB Seagate Barracuda hard drive on sale for $112, but it is labeled refurbished. A hard drive is not the kind of product I would be comfortable buying refurbished. Is the $94.50 Seagate drive fine to add to a PC? If not should I reconsider a refurbished model? Or just resign myself to spending between $150 and $200? Thanks in advance for the advice.
  10. Hey guys, this is gonna be a small build about upgrades to my home server. I had ran out of space for Plex storage since I was running just a small array of random 500GB used HDDs. I'll list my current specs and estimated specs down below, changes in BOLD. Feel free to ask some questions or make some recommendations! I changed the stock cooler out for the Noctua a little while back. I will also be adding a RAID Expander to accommodate the extra drives. I currently have only bought 4 of the 6 8TB Ultrastar Drives so I still have two more to purchase. 11. Just Wanting to talk about Hyper-V Virtualization on Enterprise hardware. Things like old Dell Poweredge R610's running windows 10 with Hyper-V? Dell R620 Overkill for virtualization for a startup? Differences between Hyper-V as an operating system and\or running as an application. Feature differences between Hyper-V on Windows Server and on Windows Pro installations.
  12. Hi, Im trying to access the web interface of a AP from 3com model AP9152 but the browser returns error do access. I can ping the ip and log in via telnet. I ran a port scan and turns out that only port 23 is open. Is there a way i can open a port to access the web interface? thanks
  13. The Open Compute project, The project from the major tech companies to cooperate on server hardware development, has started working on scalable liquid cooling for servers. There are multiple engineering groups working on the parts for liquid cooling and immersion as can be seen in the opencompute project youtube channel There is a nice video summery of the effort in the video OCPSummit19 - EW: Advanced Cooling - Eco-system Enabling of Liquid Cooling Ingredients Maybe Intel or other vendors will allow linus to take a look at what is being done. considering the scale of production it would probably trickle down to consumer hardware sooner or later.
  14. Hello! New to the forum and hoping to get some advice. I have a MacBook Pro and an iMac in my home office to edit 4K videos, store Blu Ray movies (in MKV format), and I am hoping to build or buy a NAS server within this year. The NAS will have multiple users pulling movies, 4K MKV Blu-rays, and other files as well. The performance of enterprise SSD is by far better than the consumer SSD (endurance, speed, etc...). I just bought a 'Samsung MZQLB7T6HMLA-00007 PM983 7.6TB 2.5" PCI-E 3.0 x4 SSD'. For my Macs to recognize the SSD, I purchased the 'Sonnet Echo Express SE III Thunderbolt 3' and a 'Funtin PCIe NVMe SSD Adapter with U.2'. I chose the Samsung SSD because of an acceptable mix of performance and price. Do this setup makes sense? Should I look into other options? Will MacOs be able to recognize the SSD? I don't want to use HDD because of the low speeds and the fact that I have to have RAID to achieve speeds. Please help me determine if I made the right choice. Thank You
  15. I've got two old HP DL165 G7 servers that I've been using for lab environments at work along with folding and some other random things. I'm trying to install Server 2012 R2 now and when it gets to the Windows Installation screen the server just blue screens and restarts. If I dissolve the RAID and run 1 drive in AHCI the computer doesn't blue screen. The server was running Server 2016 and running folding jobs before this.... Maybe folding fried a CPU??? I watched temps and they never got above 50°C so I don't think thats the issue. Any ideas? The server restarts too quick to see what the error code on the blue screen is. Thanks in advance
  16. Hi, I am building a server for a local company, they need capacity for backing up photos etc. (this is already done) however they would like a system to backup their company IMAP emails to it, for the life of me i cannot think of a way to do it, any ideas? TIA
  17. Hey guys, I picked up two free servers from work. They're HP DL165 G7's with 2x AMD Opteron™ 6128 (2.0GHz/8-core/12MB/115W) Processor's per host. I'm trying to figure out what I can do with these and make them useful. They don't have any RAM or HDD's so thats something I would have to purchase. Are they worth throwing a couple hundred a piece into? Thanks
  18. Hey guys, lately im running a 6,5 tb jbod with 4 drives on windows (1 drive is broken and now im fucked up) and my own created nas with a linux and KVM and some VM´s with 1 TB storage. Now I wanna change my full storage solution to another level. I´ve got an old i5 with a z77 mainboard and wanna upgrade this server with a 10 gbit sfp+ nic, raid card and a shelf conected via sashd. I wanna a raid 10 with 4 drives. Here is a small list: NIC's Shelf pref Netapp,hp,dell SATA drives raid card (0,1,5,6,10,15,16) hdd My other Setup see below Please give me some advise or other different products you prefer. Thanks for your help and support BLVCK
  19. Here at my enterprise company, we have a team of about 25 designers, each equipped with their own laptop to design kitchens using 2020 Design. For each of their renders, it takes 30+ minutes and disables them being able to work. We are looking at a potential offsite render farm which would run Quadro GV100s in each machine for maximum efficiency. We do not have interest in using a third party rendering hub and would like to know if anyone reading this has any possible ideas or solutions on how to configure, set up, or build this machine. If there are any software suggestions, please let me know in the comments below.
  20. ADMIN: if this belongs in a different category, like photography, please move Here's the deal. I'm a HUGE photography and videography nerd who insists that everything's better in RAW because I get more flexibility in post. The downside? Massive file sizes and filled drives. Currently, I have a DAS solution within my computer, with two refurbished Hitachi 4TB drives (don't worry, I have an offline backup regularly made), mirrored in Windows Storage Spaces, for a total of 3.17TB after formatting. As you can imagine, my reason for using refurbished units is because of budget constraints. I can't afford new large capacity drives, like Seagate's enterprise capacity 10TB helium-filled drives or WD's Gold datacenter 10TB helium-filled drives, though that'd be awesome to have. The storage array is completely full, with no where to put anything else. With several large upcoming projects, including some jobs for major league sports teams (100-150GB per session), I'm worried about running out of space to put anything else. Here's where you and your (professional) input comes in. Would it be better to continue expanding in a DAS environment with larger capacity drives (I only have two 3.5in drive bays)? Which drives should I use? Would it be better for me to build an external DAS box using an older motherboard and SAS expander card? OR would it be better for me to switch over to a NAS environment with larger capacity drives? Again, which drives should I use? What software operating system would you use? What's the reliability in your opinion? OR should I start getting archive drives and storing material offline, only pulling those drives and installing them into an external interface when needed? Again, which drives would you recommend for offline storage to minimize data rot? How many drives would you mirror to protect from a frozen drive failure? Is there a better solution that you can think of? PLEASE let me know as soon as possible!
  21. Hello all! Looking for a headset that will be used at work. What we need Bluetooth NC NC mic or a mic that don't catch up to others over ear What we have Jabra evolve 65 Anyone have something they want to recommend?
  22. Not long ago, NVIDIA released an update to their end-user license agreement, and some of the additions to the agreement are rather alarming... From TechPowerUp: The recent addition can be found in the agreement which you have to accept before directly downloading GeForce-drivers from their site as the fourth point under section 2.1.3. I find it disturbing that NVIDIA feels like they have to prohibit usage in data centers just because they fail to offer enough value to their customers through their insanely expensive Quadro and Tesla cards. Are NVIDIA admitting here that their enterprise solutions aren't good enough/offer enough value compared to their "mainstream" alternatives?
  23. Hey Guys, So... I'm in a unique position where I have legitimate access to Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB and valid licensing. My current setup is a Threadripper 1920X, ASUS Zenith Extreme, 32GB RAM, EVGA 1080 FTW, 250GB Samsung 960 EVO. I've got Windows 10 Pro installed currently however I get terrible stuttering even when closing a program or game and moving to a separate window? It's a little strange. I also really hate the way Windows 10 decides to update on my machine. I understand LTSB obviously doesn't receive feature updates (which I'm more than fine with) and is lovely and lightweight as I'm using this as a Windows VM on a parallels install. I understand it receives just essential security updates but am concerned over software compatibility. Does anyone here know of any obvious concerns I should have over this (i.e. nVidia software won't work or perhaps some other common app won't)? I also have no intention on using the Windows App Store, I realise this isn't available on LTSB. I plan to rebuild the PC tonight and will be putting on LTSB (providing no issues).
  24. Another phone from Samsung, this one is the Note 8 Enterprise Edition. Specs is the same as the standard Note 8, but with added security features and it's also unlocked. Price is at $994USD https://news.samsung.com/us/galaxy-note8-enterprise-edition/
  25. I am starting to look into getting a used rack mount enterprise grade server. I am new to this realm of hardware and I am not sure what servers would be good choices or not. I plane to use it for VMs and a Plex server. I want it to have many cores (12 or more) and support for about 64GB of DDR3 RAM. I need to have room for drive expansion beyond the few multi TB drives I have. Non-proprietary connectors and psus would be ideal. I would appreciate any recommendations of what servers to look at or even building my own rack mount system.
