(sorry for my english but I hope you understand and I hope that I wrote it correctly) Hi there, I need help! So I have extension cord in another extension cord. In first extension cord is pc stuff and in the second extension cord is fridge. Whenever fridge turns on and I am using my pc (playing games etc.) my picture on monitor freezes and i cant move my mouse for 1 second or something like that. So I am asking you is it safe to have extension cord in another extension cord and if it is not how can it damage my PC? Also here is the picture of how its all connected and stuff if you didn't understand what I said (on the left extension cord is pc stuff connected and another extension cord (the one on the right side) is connected in the left extension cord, and on the right extension cord there is big ass fridge connected and something else) I don't really know much about electricity and all that so Im asking you educated and smart guys for help ps. my friend told me that it is VERY dangerous to have 2 extension cords connected together, he just randomly said that when he came to my house when he saw that, i didn't quite believe him

I'm about to order and build my first PC and I'm wondering if I need an anti-static wrist strap. I'm planning on building it in my room with carpeted floors with up to 2 other people helping. I'm not sure how exactly to ground yourself properly - what should you touch? what measures should you take? I'm not sure what you're supposed to clip the crocodile clips of the wrist strap onto either...

Earlier on may, my pc experienced bootloops, with that being done, it now wont start, even if spamming the power button wont work, waiting a couple of seconds or even minutes to even make it power won't do the job. The switch isn't the problem I believe, I have already switched the reset and power button connectors on the motherboard. Which kind of makes me think that it isn't getting enough electricity or just a faulty power supply. I don't have another power supply laying around so, I cant tell if its the power supply. Does anyone know how much energy Atlanta uses annually? I'm having a hell of a time trying to find stuff for Atlanta, and not just Georgia in general. Credible sources wanted! According to this: http://www2.isye.gatech.edu/~vthomas/reducing_ghg_emissions_atl.pdf (pg.10) Atlanta's usage is ~9,000,000,000 kWh in 2010. This seems disproportionately high when NYC's is 57,000,000,000 (6 times higher) kWh in 2012, but has a population nearly 16 times higher. Does population density and the lower per-person energy usage in NYC really make that much of a difference? Or am I reading this wrong?

I need to transport my desktop home from the dorms in May and am going to transport it by placing it on the floor of a car. Does the car generate static electricity that could harm the computer? I'm wondering because when I moved it to the dorms from home, the PSU died less than a month later and had to get it replaced. I don't want that to happen when moving it back home. Also, my computer was plugged into the same power strip as my mini fridge when the PSU died and I heard that was a bad idea?

Can a Swiffer Duster be used to remove dust from the outside of a PC case without the risk of static electricity causing harm to the components? Also, can any microfiber cloth be used on the outside of the case to clean it, again without the risk of static electricity?

Hey everyone, I need your advice. I bought a new MSI Z170A Gaming M5 motherboard recently for my new build. Everything seems to work fine. But there are strange things that make me think something is not OK somewhere. Symptoms: 1. When I turn on the computer, the case fans that are connected to the mobo are spinning up really slowly. It takes 1-2 minutes to reach their full speed in most cases. But I have also seen that 1 out of 3 fans were already at full speed while the other two still tried to spin up. But this is the smallest problem. 2. When I launch GTA V, I can hear a popping/crackling sound from my headphones. Sometimes, when this happens, at the same time the leds on my keyboard all got turned on, however only the Num Lock should be turned on. When I press Caps Lock, then the led of Caps Lock turns off, and if I press it again, then the led of Scroll Lock turns off. But this keyboard thing does not happen always at the same time with the crackling noise. Sometimes the leds are already turned on when I login to Windows 10. 3. The above cracling noise with GTA happens only once after a cold start. If I reboot the machine and start the game again, there is no crackling sound. Only after a cold start. 4. The crakcling sound rarely can happen when I am just watching a youtube video. The keyboard issue can happen this time as well, however not every time happens. I tested the system with two different PSUs and the results were the same, so I excluded the PSU as a faulty hardware. GTA and the headphone had no issues with the same VGA in my previous rig. So they should be fine too. My hardware: MSI Z170A Gaming M5, latest BIOS (1.50) Intel i7-6700K Seasonic X-650 Gold, also tried with Corsair Gaming 600W EVGA GTX 980 Ti Hybrid ASUS Strix 7.1 as the sound card Samsung SM951 M.2 128GB SSD Samsung EVO 120 GB SSD ASUS PCE-AC68 wifi card Windows 10 64bit I am worried if this thing can damage my expensive hardware, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Hello all! I'm soon going to be building my first gaming rig, and my primary concern is static buildup. I understand the risk of static buildup, and that it's safe to wear an anti-static wriststrap, but I'm utterly confused as to where to attach the end of the alligator clip... Some say a PSU plugged into the wall but turned off, others say the case, but which is safer? If it helps, here are some details: The floor will most likely be carpet The desk I will be building on will be made of wood with metal pieces on the side and plastic wheels I will most likely be wearing socks because my feet get cold easily I do have a radiator nearby, which is another recommended point to connect to I will be wearing an anti-static wriststrap I thank you all for the help, and this is my first thread so please let me know if I'm missing something. I just bought a Hyper 212 EVO, and I want to record myself installing it for YouTube. However, my bedroom is carpeted, and I don't want to risk damaging my computer(don't exactly have the funds for fuck-ups at the moment). If I do the work on top of my wooden nightstand, could I just spread cardboard out across the floor, and ground myself before I start? Or is there some other way of preventing static buildup from my carpet? I don't have an anti-static bracelet, and I can't do it downstairs because it's never quiet enough to record(and I don't trust my siblings to not be near me when I have my computer opened).

Hey all, Didn't really know what subforum this fell into so posted in OT. So I'm going on holiday tonight,Tuesday to Sunday. I'm a fairly overprotective (read: paranoid) PC parent and I just wanted to ask if there's anything I should do with my rig (in my signature) to ensure it's safety while I'm gone? Plug it out, keep it plugged in, anything like that? Any ideas are welcomed, thanks everyone

I have a PSU, 750w but doesnt have any certificate , like 80+ etc . Is that being a problem ? could that psu damage my other hardwre ? and why my psu is a bit cheaper than the 80+ psu's ? thanks

Dear Awesome People, Quick and to the point, I built a new PC with an MSI H97 PC Mate Mobo and an i5 4590 CPU, and then a Corsair CX500 PSU. I get to that final moment where you hit the power button. The thing spins the fans for 1/2 second and stops. Well dang this must be a power issue if it isn't worse like a fried board or PSU, plus you hear all the time about people who don't plug in the power all the way. Well I take a look at it and the 24-pin was plugged in far but not all the way, so I made sure to pull it out and push it back in that last tiny bit until it clicked. Nothing worked, decided to pull the GPU to help Isolate, tried connecting 24-pin again and everything I was trying was resulting 1/2 second fans spins and then nothing... Thoughts? Concerns? I was recently looking at getting a UPS for my computer (We had a power outage yesterday, that was annoying) I noticed UPS don't typically come with alot of surge protection. I had been looking at a 1500VA UPS with 865 Watts and I read that it only had a little more than 350 Joules of surge protection. My current Surge Protector has 3020 Joules of protection. What am I missing LTT? Why is there such a low amount of protection on a UPS like that? HALP! (Yes, there is an a, not an e)

Hello, so yesterday my USB SoundCard arrived which was only 1$. I know, I shouldn't expect something great for that price but the thing is it works perfectly fine but only when I touch the USB plug when the SoundCard is plugged in. I can touch it with my finger or a coin but the thing is, when I plug in the sound card it creates a whole lot of noise for my microphone, but when I touch the metal on the USB plug i assume some kind of electricity goes through my body and then my microphone doesn't make any noise whatsoever. I tried leaving the coin on that plug, but I guess it needs some kind of electricity circulation or something like that. I am also using a usb extender, so my coundcard is pretty far from my computer. Also when i put it near the ground it starts to pick even more noise from somewhere. I am not familiar with physics and electricity, so I would really appreciate if you could help me fix that bancground noise. I know its all ok with my microphone, I just need to figure out why do I need to touch the USB plug and how to fix that. -
Hi, I recently bought a new gaming rig. But since I live in an area with frequent power outages I had a 800VA UPS supporting my system. My System Config (That consume the power from the 650W PSU): 4790K (Stock Speed) GTX 970 1TB 7200RPM HDD 128GB SSD Now I tried to test my system by plugging the UPS off ... so that the Desktop will take the power from the UPS Directly. But what's happening is that when I put the GPU under "stress" the desktop turns off automatically. I Did this multiple times Without the GPU stress i.e. just after boot or doing nothing apart from an opened chrome browser and it didn't restart. Then, When I ran a Game or Kombustor and removed the UPS's Plug .. it turned off . If I'm just triggering the switch randomly (like On-Off-On) The CPU Restarts .. Like It ran out of power(somehow) and started again when the AC turned on. I don't know who's at fault here. The UPS or PSU? Sorry I'm pretty new here .. would be great if you guys could help me with this issue. -
Hey, guys my office is moving soon and we are planning out where we are going to put our server room. The room we're looking at has the main breaker box on one side of the room and a secondary breaker box on the other. My question is is there any downside to puting our servers in this room? Can there be any interference or complications with putting them in the same room? -
Looks like superconductivity at room temperature has been achieved by the scientists running the website Superconductivity.org . The researchers claim to have made what is considered by some the ultimate achievement in the physics of electricity by creating two alloys, Sn9SbTe3Ba2MnCu14O28+ and Sn8SbTe4Ba2MnCu14O28+ , which showed superconducting properties at temperatures of up to 400 Kelvin or 130 degrees Celsius! This is going to have a big impact on every device or machine, which runs on electricity. All we need now is to implement it into everyday electronics and machines and we will be able to do amazing stuff with them. Also, look at the link with the whole web page full of information on how the experiment was conducted, the graphs of the results and how to reproduce everything. It does not look like some random guy claims to have done this in his back yard and put it on the Internet.

I had a XFX PSU that burnt a chip on my graphics card. Whenever I had focus on a game (game window), there would be a buzz noise coming from the speakers. I had to replace the PSU, motherboard and graphics card. It had been around 7 months with no issues (no buzzing noise) until last night. I discovered a buzz noise that is coming from the speakers and the PSU itself. Is this normal? If not, am I fucked? What should I do? Sell them? It is really hard to say when it started to happen but I think it was because I ran a somewhat beefy game (it was World of Warcraft Molten Core instance, with high/good settings [not ultra]). The game was lagging (graphically wise) a bit. On a side note: I can't believe a PSU from fucking China has better product quality than from Corsair. I had a Dell, almost everything was from China, and I never had any problems like these before. Unbelievable.

Hey forum, I've had my Fractal Design Arc Mini R2 for a about a month now and I am very happy with it. The only thing bothering me is that ever since I pulled the protection off of it when it arrived, my side panel window seems to be loaded with quite a bit of static, or at least that's what I think it is.. by that I mean that it will literally act as a dust-magnet, I can even feel it pull the hair on my arms towards it, when I hold my arm up close to it. Does anyone have any advice on how to neutralize it?

Hi, I was wondering how can i properly test a device's tolerance level. We have a PSU that is rated for either AC: 100v-245V, DC: 12V on their website What i found labeled on the box says AC : 100v - 127v DC 12v How do i test or find out it's tolerance range? We have heard rumors that people in Chile with the Particular PSU are having their PSU's burnt out. The regions voltages are : Electrical Outlet :5 Volt AC 220 Frequency 50 I believe the PSU should be able to tolerate it IF it was rated for 245v but i cant be sure until i test it. How can i properly asses what the issue is or test it's tolerance level? Any Help is appreciated I apologize if i am not using the correct terminology or wording the questions properly. -
Hey everyone, Yesterday I was watching a video from Tek Syndicate (link below) and he was reviewing the Cooler Master V850 PSU and it got me thinking why would anyone want a PSU that's not in that very high efficiency range? I understand there are money constraints and possibly size and power output issues but besides that what am I missing? Why doesn't everyone have one of these things? Thanks. After a bad PSU, I had to return both my PSU and the motherboard. After 1 month, I got the new parts (different brands): Corsair AX860 and ASUS mother P8 Z77-V Pro. Anyways, there is a weird sound exactly like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-ZoABfgJ5A#t=14 BUT when I tilt the case a little to the right, that noise is gone and there is just a faint buzzing noise. Does someone have this noise but didn't experience any kind of problem (more than 1-2+ years)? I actually bought a new UPS (cyberpower) to turn the new computer. Thanks in advance. Edit: I made a test with a paper clip. There is no weird sound, just a very faint buzz noise (the fan is not at fault, because it wasn't spinning).
