  1. Hi I have a Toshiba satellite L855-188 laptop and I want to buy a exp gdc mini pcie version and put a gtx 1060 and play on a 1080p monitor on it how much performance loss will I experience thanks
  2. I wasn't exactly where to put this post but I have a configuration that I wonder if it would work. I was wondering if you could do some gaming on a notebook computer with a i7 U series intel CPU. Say something like in an XPS 13. I'm talking about some heavier games on medium settings. To enable this I would use an eGPU over thunderbolt 3 with say a Nvdia 1060. However I realize you are likely to hit a CPU bottleneck normally as the CPU would need to turbo pretty consistently to run the games but would probably not be able to do that due to too much heat. So if I added the Opolar notebook cooler (https://www.amazon.com/Temperature-Display-Cooling-Auto-Temp-Detection/dp/B00XKU47Y2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1505531943&sr=8-1&keywords=opolar%2Bnotebook&th=1) to keep the CPU cooler would it be able to consistently turbo enough that the games would run steadily? Or would this setup not really work out?
  3. Okay. So let me first start out with saying that I fully understand that I have an outdated laptop with the added heartbreaking truth of no longer having driver support and it is in no way (except the RAM sticks) upgradeable or interchangeable. I am also VERY new to the PC world in that I do not understand most of anything yet when it comes to custom PC building except the components that make them up and the basics of what the jobs of said components are (and also that custom RGB and water cooled PCs are drool worthy). I have never built a custom PC, but I have already found the glorious GOD SEND of a website, Newegg, and am in the process of buying parts to build a custom PC since my eyes were opened 2 days ago that laptops are good for nothing but portability and MS paint and Office programs... The thing that set me off was that my GPU and CPU are soldered to the board and can not be removed or interchanged for better parts. Yes I realize there are nice gaming laptops out there but I am not able to shell out 2,000+ on a new laptop. The budget does not allow it and will not in the foreseeable future. So, to the point. I have a Alienware m14xr1 (will post current specs below). I would like to play pubg. My husband has a nice gaming rig and can beyond handle the game and I assumed that maybe, just maybe, I can run this game at at least 20-22 FPS on lowest settings. Wrong. I was so wrong. 10... 10 FPS... that was my average after loading in all players. It was terrible. (I used FRAPS to watch FPS in game). I tried so hard to make it work but it was futile.... So my first thought was, "Hey, why not get an egpu so you can run newer games until your case gets here and you can start putting blood, sweat, and tears into building a decent rig so you can actually game." No. My answer seems to be no. Which is crushing my love of this laptop and making me want to make it a glorified drawing tablet and portable video watching device... So looking online I have found no answers to if I can use a egpu other than removing the battery and wifi card so I can plug one in there. I have no idea how to do this and would rather not pursue this route if at all possible. Also I have no idea what a mPCIe adapter is but the same site says I will need one to make that solution work. Problem is my battery already can't last 3 minutes without the charger so it has become a lifeline at this point just to keep it on and I would rather not have to have any more 30ft cat 6 cables running through the house.. Its becoming ridiculous how many cables are running across the house to the office just to use the husbands rig. That we found out today does not have WiFi or Bluetooth capabilities and has to be direct connected with a cable. It is fine but would be nice if it had those options. Anyway, getting off topic here. The quwestion is, can i run an egpu on this laptop or am i going to have to just build a rig? Posting the specs and I'll let the experts handle it from here. My Laptop is a Alienware m14xr1: OS: Win 8.1 Pro GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 555m Supports DirectX 11.0 Memory Type DDR3 (Hynix) Memory size 3072 MB Driver version 22.21.13.8541 (ForceWare 385.41) WHQL/Win8.1 64bit GPU clock 590 MHz Memory 900MHz Shader 1180 MHz RAM: 6G CPU: Intel core i7 2860QM 2.4GHz 4 cores 8 logical processors I have an SSD but no HDD wich is strange to me but nice in the fact that my OS startup time is minimum. Available Ports: 2xUSB3.0, 1xUSB2.0, 1xHDMI1.4, 1xMiniDisplayPort, 1xVGA, 1xEthernet1000mbps (If you need more information on anything I will try my best to provide it. I went a little extra on the GPU because I have no idea what could be important so I put what I thought may be relevant information.)
  4. theres an m.2 x4 version of the beast egpu external dock, it supposedly has no performance loss. theres also an m.2 x2 version, which is supposedly the same speed as the mini pcie version which is also available, they lose 20% performance roughly from what it says. the former blanketing most laptops since 2007 making it excellent. but the m.2 x4 might be a superior solution to this external problem, since its available cheaper than thunderbolt 3 for starters, and if it truely doesnt lose performance, its excellent as well. im not sure on the metrics since i dont own one myself yet. from the videos ive seen with the mini pcie version, it seems to lose a little performance from what id expect on a desktop. the framerate on most games is still very playable for the card in question with little to no noticable drop from what id expect in native x16. so i dont see why m.2 x4 wouldnt completely negate any possible drop in performance flawlessly. id like to see a comparison some day to shed more light on it. although essentially m.2 x4 is pcie 3.0 x4 i believe, so it should be fast enough to support a full gpu with no issues natively. i could be wrong about that though, as some laptops say pcie x4 (m.2 m key 2280) and some dont, similar to how some usb type c has thunderbolt 3 and some dont. also, considering some laptops have 2 mini pcie slots, and considering its just slimmed down pcie x1, i wonder if you could sli graphics cards with this. for anyone looking for it, i searched V8.0 EXP GDC M.2 X4 Version, its the first link, banggood. if you scroll down it lists links to all the different versions, m.2 x2, mini pcie, mac and expresscard. pretty awsome seeing this kind of thing finally. keep in mind the mini pcie version on banggood isnt bundled with the power adapter or 6 pin splitter. but you can find the same thing on world taobao in a bundle. theres also cases available on ebay for this dock. https://www.banggood.com/M_2-X4-Version-V8_0-EXP-GDC-Beast-Laptop-External-Independent-Video-Card-Dock-With-Power-p-1109912.html X4 version bundle https://world.taobao.com/item/37107780625.htm?fromSite=main (translate this site with google chrome or equivilant) mini pcie version bundle https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.XEXP+GDC+BEAST+case.TRS0&_nkw=EXP+GDC+BEAST+case&_sacat=0 Cases translated the taobao website gives pretty comprehensive instructions to set it up, and a pretty long list of helpful information.
  5. 1. Does any laptop with type C work? 2. Could I even use a Windows Surface device or a laptop with Snapdragon 835? 3. Are there any affordable eGPU docks in Norway? o3o 4. Will Snapdragon 835 + GTX 960 play Crysis? O3O
  6. Hey i am searching for a solution to my very special problem. I want a Laptop, which has a great battery life and is light and is portable + it would be awesome to have a convertable (so I could write on it like on real paper), so that I can use it during my mechanical engineering study. But I also would like it to have good gaming performance. 1. The first solution would be to get 2 systems, one for gaming and one for productivity, but I dont like to have a Laptop and a Desktop at the same time. I am kind of weird, but I'd like to have one system to rule them all 2. The secound solution is to get a Laptop with a good cpu and usb-c/thunderbolt 3 support (x4 for best experience). But I didn't found any laptops that fullfill my needs entirely perfect. One option is the razorblade stealth, but I think it is not so good in the price to performance perspective (or is it?). Another option is the dell xps lineup (there is also a convertable, which would be neat), but they dont feature 4 lanes of pcie 3. (Or a Macbook, with Windows, but I think this would be too expancive) Could you help me solve my misery and give me some advice on what to do? (Rigth now I have a gaming rig and a laptop (which isn't that good)) (Sry for bad english. I am from germany)
  7. I want to know if the MacBook Pro late 2016 or newer with Four Thunderbolt ports can have four eGPU's with RX580's in Crossover? Or even iMac with Four Thunderbolt4 ports?
  8. Hello everyone, I had recently purchased an exp gdc beast v8.0 . I have had no luck being able to use my egpu. I was able to get my egpu to detect by hotplugging it but now I'm getting the error 12 (not enough resources). Can anyone please help me with this. I am financially not able to get a new gaming laptop or build my own pc to game on. I have gone through the DSDT override method but it goes way above my head and I'm not financially able to purchase nando's setup 1.3 . My laptop is a gigabyte p15f v2 and I'm trying to put in a gtx 1050 in it via exp gdc any help will be extremely appreciated Thanks for reading
  9. Hey guys, I recently purchased an EXP GDC BEAST adapter the mini pci-e version. My issue is that when I connect the exp gdc adapter to my laptop via mini pci-e my laptop freezes on boot and I have to press the power button to turn it off. My laptop is a gigabyte p15f v2. My laptop is listed on bangood as one of the supported laptops. I have tried booting my laptop with wifi card attached and then removing my wifi card and plugging in the exp gdc beast but nothing happens, my gpu is not detected in device manager. I'm using a gtx 1050. I even thought of updating my bios but it seems that there are no updates for my bios. One last piece of info, most people say that I must go into my bios and change my graphics options to UMA graphics. I do not have graphics options in my bios, I just have 3d acceleration with enable or disable options. Any help with this issue will be extremely appreciated. I really need this to work as I cannot afford to build a new PC or purchase a new laptop to game on. Thanks for reading.
  10. Hey, I want to build a Thunderbolt 3 Expansion Box, that should be an eGPU and an expandable storage solution in a single enclosure. The box should use 2 Thunderbolt Cables one for the GPU and one for storage. It would also be nice if the storage could be accessed over the network. Requirements: - GPU that supports 2 4k displays and some light gaming (e.g. Overwatch, ...) - 12 TB in RAID 5 (maybe with a little SSD Cache) - Silent case with dust filters and a lot of hard drive bays. I don't know if such a build is even possible, but it would be the ultimate docking system for my laptop as I prefer always working on the same machine. Thanks
  11. i have an old dell inspiron 3421 and i noticed that my laptop has a msata slot (i think thats what is is) where the wifi card is inserted. can i plug in a egpu through that slot? i have seen adapters like this one: https://www.banggood.com/Mini-PCI-E-Version-V8_0-EXP-GDC-Beast-Laptop-External-Independent-Video-Card-Dock-p-1011222.html?rmmds=detail-top-buytogether but will that actually work?
  12. Does someone maybe know what tunderbolt chipsset this uses? i'm getting a macbook pro for work and since high sierra will support egpu's i wanted to pick up the gigabyte gaming box for its price and size. But i need to know if its TPS65982, TPS65983 or any other chips.
  13. Hello, I'm wondering if anyone on the forum is running a 2017 15" Macbook Pro with an external gpu. I've recently acquired a 2017 2.9Ghz i7 model, and plan to use it as my daily laptop as well as the work horse on my desk as i'm moving to a different country and don't want to lug my desktop along. Current desktop specs : Fx 8350 4.8GHz/R9 290x/16GB/multiple sata III ssds/ As the current generation i7's on laptops are of a comparable performance to my desktop cpu, but about 6 times more power efficient, it was cause to make this purchase. I've been out of the retail computing space for quite a few years and would like some advice. I'm thinking of getting the Mantiz Venus Thunderbolt 3 enclosure @ U$389. It comes with 5 USB 3.0 ports / lan / thunderbolt and a SATA 3 port and would like to pair it with a GTX 1070 From my research, I've only seen test results in the form of synthetic benchmarks and not in the form of real world FPS from games. Is anyone running a similar setup ? Eg. 2016MBP/GTX1060/GTX1050Ti/RX480/RX580 Would love to hear some comments. Cheers, Ninja
  14. Hi guys, so I'll be moving to go to college, far enough away that it would be improbable for me to take my current gaming rig (i7-2600k, 980ti) there, and my parents have convinced (guilt tripped) me to give my sister my old laptop for browsing/surfing the web. I'm looking for a laptop that has pretty good power, as I do some pretty demanding titles such as ARMA 3 and Star Citizen, etc. My major that I will be going into is Computer Engineering, so maybe a bit of CAD too. My plan so far is to basically sell most of my parts, but specifically keep an unused 480gb ssd, and use my 980ti in an external enclosure for my laptop. Basically, I want to know if this is a good idea or not, and if people would instead recommend a gaming PC and a laptop for school instead. Price range is ~$1200, at most $1400. I don't care at all about gaming on the go, and I also plan to take that steal on the Oculus Rift before it ends. Maybe eventually save up for a 1440p monitor. It should also be mentioned that I am in an internship right now, and my company has discounts for laptops with Dell, Lenovo, and HP for a at most 33% discount. Thanks, -Matt *Also, it's super annoying that when I try to edit in the middle of a sentence, the character before it get deleted with each inputted character, like I'm instead inserting the words
  15. Hi, This might sound strange and it might not be a viable build but I am wanting to build a small form quad core PC that can connect to my Asus ROG station 2 via thunderbolt 3. The reason being is that currently I have an Asus Transformer Pro 3 and connect it to the Station 2 eGPU when I want to game. It works well but...the dual core CPU is a limiting factor and I am wanting to play Star Citizen when it comes out. I can play most games very well but worried that games like Star Citizen are really going to need a quad core to run properly. So I don't want to waste the Station 2 eGPU enclosure and also it is a great docking station and allows for easy upgrade of the GPU. However I can only find the http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Fatal1ty Z270 Gaming-ITXac/index.us.asp Fatality Asrock mini-ITX motherboard that seems to support Thunderbolt 3. The first question is would this motherboard recognise the eGPU device and would it actually work? Second question is could I add in the Asus https://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboard-Accessory/ThunderboltEX-3/ ThunderboltEX-3 PCIe card to any normal mini-ITX Asus motherboard and would that connect and work with the Station 2 eGPU? Or should I just forget the Station 2 and fit the GPU onto the motherboard and have a normal build and well the Station 2? I think the answer to the second question is the most important as if anyone has connected a eGPU to a normal motherboard via the ThunderboltEX card then that would be the answer I think.
  16. Allright, here comes another topic about cheap eGPU's! What it boils down to is I'm looking for a cheap eGPU enclosure for my 15" rMBP from 2015. You're probably thinking: why is this chap asking for a cheap enclosure, when he can afford a MBP anyway? Well, the MBP was bought from an entirely different budget than my gaming stuff, in this case my budget for school related items and just my regular budget. Aight, that's out of the way. I've already got two candidate GPU's, a Gigabyte GTX560TI and an MSI RX470 8G and quite a collection of 350W ATX PSU's, so the budget for the enclosure won't cover those things. I've got about a 100 bucks for an enclosure, but so far I didn't seem to have any luck finding one. Is there really nothing out there? I don't mind pulling a Linus uhh doing some DIY stuff. I simply don't want to buy an enclosure that's equally expensive or even more expensive than my actual GPU's...
  17. Hi, I'm looking for an eGPU that won't get bottlenecked by an intel core i7-5500u in a price range of about 0-300$ CAD, it's for gaming. I'll mostly be playing mobas, MMORPGs and some fps like league, black desert, and bo3. The laptop I'm looking to upgrade with an eGPU is an ASUS X555L laptop. if anybody can help me find a decent egpu that'll boost my laptop it will be greatly appreciated, Thank you.
  18. I have an monitor I want to run off my i7 intel core 2015 Macbook air, I can easily run the monitor off the integrated intel graphics but I have a desktop 1050ti gpu and a spare motherboard. Is it possible to run the GPU off the motherboard into the monitor (With a PSU of course), but run the CPU and processing off the Macbook? Please help!
  19. I’m curious if I could use any computer (assuming that it’s motherboard has a thunderbolt 3 port) to act as an eGPU for my MacBook Pro? In case the answer is no, what would be the limit?
  20. I was wondering if there is something that i can use to connect my graphics card to my computer some i can play so Top of the line games.
  21. Hi! It´s been confirmed by dell that the Thunderbolt 3 port is the same as in the old model and won´t support speeds up to 40gbps because they still only use 2 PCIe lanes instead of 4. The XPS 13 2-1 will however have full thunderbolt speed. I´ve been waiting a long time for the new dell XPS 15. I thought that I finally would get a portable professional laptop with good battery life and the power to play games without looking like a toy, and the option to use a eGPU later on when the 1050 wouldn´t be enough. Do anyone recommend any other laptop that is similar but with full Thunderbolt 3 speeds?
  22. TechPowerUp has done another article regarding PCI Express scaling, this time on the GTX 1080. PCI Express scaling for those that don't know is basically running the video card at various PCIe configurations. They even tested PCIe 3.0 x4 through the chipset rather than the CPU to see how that would affect performance. The short of it is: Testing was done at 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p. Lower resolutions are more sensitive to PCIe scaling PCIe 1.1 x4 is doable but you get down to as low as 30% the performance. PCIe 3.0 x4/2.0 x8/1.1 x16 is still within about 90% of the GTX 1080's performance. PCIe 3.0 x4 through the chipset has minimal impact on performance, at about 4% at worst. Some of the games they tested had little to almost no impact from PCIe scaling, even down to 1.1 x4. Those were: Shadow Warrior 2 No Man's Sky Fallout 4 at 1080p Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Call of Duty Black Ops 3
  23. Hi guys, right now I'm using an HP EliteBook 8470p and it's really not good at playing games so I was thinking about trying an eGpu and I'd like to know if anyone has tips for me or if an egpu is even worth it. thanks
  24. Hey everybody, So I recently got an external gpu working on my old Thinkpad T430 via an expresscard slot and external PCIE board. I am running a GTX 750 and it is working great (surprisingly)! On to my question, I am looking to build an enclosure for the eGPU and the power supply the runs it. I was also thinking that I could consolidate that into a laptop charger as well. Is there any way I could charge the laptop via the dekstop PSU that will be powering the 750? Not sure how feasible this would be but it could be a fun project. The idea is to take up only one wall plug to power the gpu and charge the laptop. Thanks, Zach
  25. Hello everyone!!! First of all, I would like to say that I am not an English speaker, sorry if I make some mistakes. Let me introduce you to my situation, which, I think, is very common. I am in Europe, working as a Web Developer. Despite my setup at my work, I have my own laptop for study my stuffs and play. It is not a good laptop for play (it hasn't a dedicated GPU) and it is not a good laptop for study most of the computer languages and topics (Windows, even though, is becoming easier): Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4702MQ CPU @ 2.20GHz RAM 8.0 GB Video Card Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 I watched LTT video about Razer Stealth and Core, and I loved that, I thought about buying it, but I found it really expensive and, as he said, I think it is not the moment. Also I like to have mobility, just saying. Knowing this, and in your criteria, which is the best way to update my equipment? Waiting forward to your comments!
