  1. Hey kids, After an experience with a rx590 that made an attempt to deafen me that left me scarred and deformed, I'm currently looking at doing a build for a capable gaming/productivity machine which is as efficient and quiet as possible. From what I've seen, the 1660ti is the best performance/watt card available right now and would get excellent framerates at 1080p which is exactly what I need. However, the number of different cards from different manufacturers is ridiculous - in the UK it ranges from tiny 1 fan designs to 3 fan beasts, with about a £120 difference in price between the cheapest and most expensive. Those of you who own 1660ti or have experience with them..... which cards are getting the best thermal/acoustic performance? I'm not too worried about factory overclock - the base speeds are more than good enough, I just want a card that will be as quiet and cool as possible under load in possibly quite a cramped SFF case. tl;dr - Which 1660ti design gets the best thermals and is quiet as a mouse? Thanks in advance for the help!
  2. So I've been considering going off-grid, and that means not having a lot of energy to play with, mostly using solar panels and deep-cycle batteries. I've been playing around with the idea of a low energy gaming rig and was wondering what you guys think! So far the plan is: i3 8300T 3.2Ghz Cryorig - C7 cooler MSI B360i ITX Team Vulcan 8GB (4x2) 2400 14CAS RAM Crucial MX500 500GB SSD 2.5'' MSI GTX 1050ti Silverstone Sugo SG13B SeaSonic 550W Gold Fully-Modular PSU All this on PCPartpicker says the TDP is 165W. And the build is around $750 USD What do you guys think?
  3. Hi there, I built my first custom loop liquid cooling a few weeks ago. Everything is great except the fact that the tubes coming in and out of the CPU block end up right on top of the graphics card. When my graphics card goes up to 70 Celsius it makes the tubes hot as well even if the CPU is not working hard. Is there a more efficient way of placing the tubes? My case is a Thermaltake P90. Cheers, Axel
  4. Hey Guys, I'm looking to build a gaming desktop for under a thousand dollars. I'd be running MOBA and Open World games at medium-high settings. I am in the US. Here is my build so far:https://pcpartpicker.com/user/sammmyhi1/saved/ZQqJxr I am looking for advice, warnings, opinions, anything really. Thanks! pasted: CPU | [AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor] Motherboard | [Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard] Memory | [Kingston HyperX Fury Black 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory] Storage | [Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive] Video Card | [Asus GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB Dual Video Card] Case | [Cooler Master Storm Scout ATX Mid Tower Case] Power Supply | [EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Operating System | [Microsoft Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit]
  5. Greetings everyone, first post here and well, as title says, I would like everyone's help for either building or buying a facebook machine that will mainly be used for web browsing, idle file downloading, possibly 1-man server and seed for torrents when I don't need my connection. Performance on gaming, 3D software and the such is absolutely not required, as I already own a gamer system for that, I would like advice on a good cost/benefit ratio system that can boot decently fast, stay on without issues for extended periods of time and handle basic file transfer and viewing, with maybe office software. So with that said -If I wanted scalability, how much would that set me back? Related to what's the cheapest system/motherboard that can take a recent gen i3 processor and, do I need an i3 or can an older CPU do the job? -I already own a pretty old PC that I may or may not have already fried. Would it be cheaper to buy the power supply and motherboard, and recycle cabinet, or just buy a pre-built system? -Already own 2 HDDs as well, both SATA -Would such a system be factible to, in the foreseeable future, be upgraded to something that can run crysis? Or would I be better off just cheaping out on literally every component, knowing a facebook machine is all this system is, and will ever be? Thanks everyone in advance.
  6. Yea current plan is to use it for our SQL clusters. We're also super tied in to snapmanager, our DR totally relies on it. We also have an SQL Always-On Async Mode cluster across two cities in a multi-subnet configuration, iSCSI stretched VLAN, with snapmanager. We were told that setup couldn't be done .
  7. I challenge Linus to make that server (to scale or calculate) to consume no more than 1.45 Watts per TB of usable space, assuming RAID-6. Rules: Max. Total TDP 1450W per PB of usable space, RAID-6. 1 CPU core = 3 HDD 1 GiB RAM/TB of raw space 3 GB of SSD (SLC, eMLC or MLC) cache per TB of raw space Has a speed of 1 GB/s write and 2 GB/s read. Can Linus do it? I doubt it. But in my calculations, it IS possible. (The efficient ones are below 1.4W/TB usable, but I can make below 1.1W/TB usable.) Enjoy ur headache Linus.
  8. So I got a thermaltake smart series 650watt psu and my system with a 2500 and crazy windforce gpu draw plus three fans, hdd, and others draw 300+ watts under load. The 80 plus Bronze rating of my PSU states that it will be most efficient at 50% load. Does this mean my system will be running the most efficiently while playing games?
  9. Short sweet and to the point: I've made a computer build but ,after replacing some parts, I have found myself over-budget. Thus, I've decided to try to scrape some money back by getting a cheaper version of what I thought best: the power supply. I need something in the ~$40 range, yet I don't want it to be a piece of junk that is useless after the first couple months- I need this thing to last. If such a power supply exists, here is the part picker list of the components it would need to power: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/xJ8HBP (~500W) As always, thanks for any help
  10. Hey guys! Comment down below your opinions about this multi-gpu (sli) thing. I do not know how to feel about this. Like.. I'll buy 2x gtx 1080 and I'm not sure what to think about this. On a side it will be overkill/a waste , and on another side I will have more fps. So , i'm waiting to see what you guys think.
  11. Amazon: http://geni.us/3R1B NCIX: http://bit.ly/1PMPt5Z Are expensive NAS units your only option to expand your storage reliably? I think not...
  12. Hey, yes I know I can go on the freaking pinned topic where it tells me how much power I need but I am too confused for that So I am getting a new rig and have decided on all my parts except some fans and power supply. Well actually originally I thought I knew what PSU I wanted until I saw the estimated power usage! In PCPartPicker, it says that my PC will use around 350 watts while on full load, and I am going to overclock it and MAYBE increase some voltages on my components. I was originally going for a EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply But now it seems a bit overkill for a 400 watt system? Don't you think? I would appreciate some help down in the comments as to what company I should buy from and what efficiency rating it should have. Thanks guys, all help will be appreciated. System specs: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($525.00 @ CPL Online) CPU Cooler: be quiet! Example: If system requires 400 watts, I would rather 600 or 575 or 650 or something higher than 400 by at least like 100 watts. I want a safe distance from my estimated usage than my actual PSU wattage. Hope that somehow made sense. EDIT #1 Apparently PCPartPicker stuffed up on calculating the wattage and the full load is 650 watts if you include the gpu. Would this be enough for OVERCLOCKING? D: Thanks
  13. QUESTION FOR LINUS; Please make a Video On building an energy efficient gaming rig!!! I would like to see a build guide on youtube for building a powerful gaming rig yet still keeping it energy efficient. as I live in an old home; with older appliances and higher energy bills; Yet I still want to play the latest games. So Please Teach us how to build a energy efficient gaming rig; to keep our Utility Bills low; yet still get a good FPS; and good smooth gaming perfomance!!! How do you do it? and Can it be done at all? Sincerely, Gamer From Michigan
  14. small-computer.jpg1000x1000 196 KB I recently bought a case for a small board I had left over from early ASIC Bitcoin mining. It draws less than 5 watts. It's a single core 1.8GHZ with 2 threads, 2 GB ram, and 32 GB drive. I switched the os from windows vista to linux distro. What are some fun projects I could do with it? I'm wanting cheap projects that don't need a super computer. small-computer-inside.jpg1000x801 192 KB First thoughts were to create a donation website that could (maybe) pay for it's own internet. However, a cloud machine would probably out last this physical box. Second thought was a digital panhandler. So once someone connected to it's open wifi, it would try to entertain them from content submitted by previous strangers. No internet cost with this one, maybe kinda boring though. Please give me some ideas.
  15. Hello fellows, I am looking for a new laptop which can handle multimedia projects with Photoshop and Blender etc easily. I also play a lot Counter-Strike:Global Offensive and League of Legends sometimes so I need some good GPU too. I already own a desktop PC which is powerful so I don't wanna buy a laptop what I have to keep plugged in to a wall all the time. So the battery should be as good as possible. Bad thing is that with good specs, battery drains faster. So what I actually want is a good specs owning laptop with a good battery for about 1000 euros/dollars. Of course less is always better. (I prefer intel and it does not have to be 4-core, 2 cores drain less battery and I don't multitask so much that I necessarily need 4 cores.) Thank you for your time and thoughts!
  16. Hello I am fairly new to this forum, but i came here to get some opionions on my first rig. I have a budget of about 4000 dollars and what i am planning to do with this build is to play games at smooth and stable fps at the highest settings as possible. More specifically, i wanna play games such as Thief, Dayz Standalone, Grand Theft Auto V, Battlefield Hardline etc. I am NOT going to overclock this rig, therefore i decided to go a little bit of an overkill on the GPU and CPU while staying under my budget. Here are the parts that i picked for my rig: Case: Corsair Obsidian 450D Monitor: BenQ 32" LED BL3200PT 2560x1440p Power Supply: Corsair RM1000, 1000W PSU RAM: HyperX Fury DDR3 1866MHz, 16GB (2x8GB) CPU: Intel Core i7-4790k CPU cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo SSD: Kingston SSD V300 120GB 450MB/s Motherboard: MSI Z97S GPU: Sapphire Radeon R9 295x2 8GB DDR5 HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB SATA 6Gb/s sata 3.0 Optical Drive: Basic cheap DVD+RW I also have keyboard and headphones with the purchase, but they wont affect performance as much. Also i would appreciate it alot if you could help me tweak the list a little bit, make some changes here and there. I have not purchased the parts yet, although i am planning to build this rig by the end of summer. (I apologize for my terrible english). EDITS ON THIS RIG IS IN THE REPLIES SECTION
  17. Hi, So I am looking to get a new powersupply for my system. (Nothing really wrong with the old one, I'm just looking to upgrade components to make my PC Mode silent and that inklusive the PSU) Here are some specs to consider: I have a powerconsumption of about 400watts under full load. Header for some Upgrade is nice, but not that much is required. (I mit possibly sich out my current R9 280x for a R9 390x, in that turn out to be an awesome card. Which knowing AMD might consume even a bit more power than the 280x) So that's abtut the headroom for future upgrades I might need. I'm not planing on doing any crossfire of SLI setups. So considering the 400Watts and a bit of headroom I want, whats PSUs would you reccommend me for near silent to completetly silent operation. Getting one of those semi-passive PSUs that only even turn on the fans at a certain load, is an option too, in case you are wondering. So going overkill would be ok, as long as it makes sense (a 800watts powersupply that only turns on its fan at 50% load and would allow for fanless operation pretty much all the time seems somewhat reasonable. However a 1200watts powersupply that also only turns on its fan at 50% load just seems like a waste of money in every way to me. Remember it does not have to feature a fanless mode at all of have so much headroom as in the example with the fan that only turns on at 50% load. If you know of any powersupply that is really silent and reliable while continously having a fan spinning that works just as well. Great energy efficency and a good warranty should also be considered. I'm looking forward to seeing any suggestions you guys might have for me please excuse some of the ridicoulos spelling/word mistakes there might be due to autocorrection.

  19. I was looking for advice for both hardware and OS. I currently have around 500GBs of movies, music, pictures, games and programs. The server would be mainly used to stream movies and music but there will be times when I’ll want to pull large and or many files from or too it. I hope to build a system which can saturate an entire 1 Gig LAN (theoretical 128mbps I believe). I have a WD red 3TB drive which should be able to push those speeds when working with larger file sizes. Plan to use a 1TB laptop hard to back up the main 3TB drive. Have no need to run RAID for the data drives. Those are the only 2 data drives i plan on having. Thinking I could have a script or the os backup the 3TB drive to the 1TB for redundancy. Power efficiency is important to me as well. I hope to use a picoPSU. Thinking a Celeron 1037u or J800/j1900 would be ok? Power efficient yet enough performance to maximize a gigabyte network? Any other recommendations on hardware are welcome. Next I’m contemplating the OS. I’m a windows user for my other machines and I would have to be able to see and maneuver through directories on the server from those windows machines. So thinking I’ll have to stink with NFS…. My knowledge is weak here. Assuming I could still go with a freeNAS or NAS4free? Any other recommended os’s for my situation and plan? I have only other OS I have worked with in the past is Linux(Ubuntu) other than apple. I don’t have much experience here on a good file server OS. Think Windows Home server would be too much or more than I need for such a low powered system as my plans advise… Any advice on a recommend cpu and os would be greatly appreciated. Again I wish to saturate my gigabyte networking without using a power hungry server. Hope to build a system idling at 10-15 watts max if I’m lucky. Thanks ahead for your input!

  21. I have finally build up the courage to build my first pc for myself, but to be sure that I choose something that will fit my needs I wanted to ask for you guys opinion on my build. I have put a link down below of the build. http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Sletting/saved/6LYfrH I want to know how well it performs, it will be used for gaming, and maybe some surfing on the net. If we take 4 games, that are usually used for benchmarks Crysis 3 Farcry 3 Grid 2 Bioshock infinite How well will they run? can they run on highest settings, and if they can how many fps? I don't want to spend a whole lot on the pc, since I'm going to build a new in about a year. But I still want it to follow up on the newest games and play them with good graphics and high fps. Thanks in advance, Jonas

If it doesnt create one if (!Directory.Exists(destination)) { Directory.CreateDirectory(destination); } //Create, then Start a stopwatch Stopwatch timer = new Stopwatch(); timer.Start(); //!!!Code to Copy desktop to external drive here!!! //Stop Stopwatch, Format the time. timer.Stop(); //Get elapsed time as timespan value TimeSpan ts = timer.Elapsed; //Format elapsedTime = String.Format("{0:00}:{1:00}:{2:00}.{3:00}", ts.Hours, ts.Minutes, ts.Seconds, ts.Milliseconds / 10); //Print Console.Write("Process took "); Console.Write(elapsedTime); Console.WriteLine("to complete!"); Console.ReadLine(); } }} Thanks.
  23. So i just wanted to ask the community for recommendations for SSD's under 100$. I'm willing to go to like around 110$ as well. 25. Hey, Earlier today I watched a Tek Syndicate video. In there they talked about via, a processor company I had never heard of before, so I loaded up their page and found they overall have very low power processors. I will be going to collage soon and want to build a computer that could go to collage and be brought back home in the summer. I was wondering if a tiny itx system with a via processor would be a viable option (no pun intended). It would have a ssd as storage, a amd grahpics card, possibly the powersupply that came with the case, a motherboard that supports the chip, and low profile ram. Would this be a decent system to just simply load with linuix of some sort, and only program or surf the web on? Video Link: Thanks, Beefy
