If I plant two apples, will I be able to grow a dual core?
-
My friend recently picked up a Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3LR with a E8400 in it off a mate and I was looking around for a cheap way for him to increase it's horse power in relation to gaming. I can get a Q8400 for $40 but all the writing I can find about it seams to say that the E8400 is better despite only having 2 cores. Is this because at the time these chips were new you didn't need a quad core or is the E8400 actually better? The games he plays are all new enough to take advantage of quad cores.

I was looking at the razer blade stealth's specs on razer's website http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-systems/razer-blade-stealth , and i noticed in the cpu category, was an I7 6500u. I always thought i7s were quad cores with hyper threading, but the 6500u has a dual core with hyper threading. This sounds a lot more like an i3. Is there anything special about this processor that makes it worthy of being called an I7? or did intel just call it an i7 to help out razer?

Hey LTT Community. Today I spent coin on the MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Motherboard and a used G2358 for 40 bucks. I needed a temporary cpu since I will buy a i7 for my board next month and I dont have enough to buy it now. Well I will be stuck with this dual core for 3 weeks. the board and cpu will be sent tomorrow , I will update you ppl when I get my crap Well , I did some research since most reviews only show performance in games that are not cpu heavy , on YouTube I discovered a lot of people having massive problems in metal gear solid and GTA V , those 2 games were the only reason why I want my PC now and I dont wait 3 weeks . How exaclty does the Pentium do in those games ?

So I had work with my dual pentium since i buy my pc, its a bit old (2006) and recently I manage to get a core 2 Duo so what you think people will i see a gain in performance?( I know Core 2 Duo is more powerful Than Dual Pentium, so I want to know what you guys think :3)

My question today is, which would be better, a dual core clocked/overclocked to 4.4 GHz or a Quad Core at 3.1? To be specific I am talking about the Pentium G3258 at 4.4 GHz and any mid-range i5 that clocks around 3.1-3.3 GHz but isn't overclock-able. I would like to upgrade my CPU but didn't want to spend money on something like a 4690k because I don't game or multitask enough for that to be an option. I know that Quad Core's are better for multitasking and I do multitask somewhat often, I also like to game but not the most high end or demanding titles BUT. The downgrade of around 1 GHz is 25% of the clock speed so I was wondering if I would get the same speed just now with 4 cores or stick with the higher clock speed, and lower core count of the Pentium Assuming a normal workload with a couple processes running and maybe a game, which would be a better choice? Sorry if this question was badly laid out or unclear in any way, I am new to the forum and to tech forums in general so please bear with me.

Hi all this is my first post here I have a AMD Athlon 64 x2 5200+ processor and yesterday i thought to myself ok i'm going to do a small overclock to get it from 2.7Ghz to 2.9, that's really not much and so i started up OCCT and CPU-Z and just to make sure my temps are still ok before starting. I ran the stress test and as the test was going full speed and i could see that 1 of my two cores is only runninh at 65% so i thought ok leave it be maybe it's just picking up for some reason that i can't think of but ok, so i gave it a min or to and saw that it stays at 65% +/- and still nothing happened after 10 mins of running the test. I then thought ok do the overclock and see what happens maybe something will break free ( haha i know it does not work like that) and i did so and everything runs smooth on the overclock but i saw that the same core (it's the second core) is still only going to 65% +/- and nothing more, so i turned down the overclock to default. I wanted to come ask all you fine people is it normal for my CPU to run one core 100% and the other at around 65% when stress testing with OCCT? i'm hoping it's just something in my BIOS or windows that is limiting the second core from going all out. Thanks again for reading this first timers post, hope to get some awesome feedback. Great day to all!

At the moment I have a V3-571G (4GB Version) If I bought a Asus 100TA do you think I would notice much difference? Cause its half the ram and its quad core but lower clock speed? Thanks for the help.

I bought GTA V hoping that my dual core pentium G3258, was sufficient with my overclock beeing 4.5 GHz. But when i run the game my average fps in the city is around 30 fps, no mater what my graphics settings are (exept for MSAA and anti-aliasing then they'll dip way below). Naturaly I jumped to the conclusion that it was my CPU that was lagging behind, but in LinusTechTips' new video about GTA V (vessel.com) they test GTA V on a dual core, and get 51 fps. I was just wondering if it could be possible to get my game running with a average fps preferably around 40-50 (or higher of course ). My setup: Intel Dual-Core Pentium G3258 4.5 GHz XFX AMD Radeon HD 7970 8 Gb ram

Hi, So I'm stuck figuring out the difference between dual core and quad core. Like I know that quad core is better depending on the task and also for multitasking, but I was wondering as to what I would best fit my needs. I am planning on building a HTPC for watching blu ray discs, home videos and surfing the web (when I say surfing the web I usually have approximately 8+ tabs opened). I was hoping to use an intel CPU so either an i3 or an i5 (leaning more towards i5 at the moment cause I feel like a quad core will suit me). Hopefully I find a response that clarifies what I should get. Thanks, 4321Rocket

I ask because a person with an R9 280 told me that they would not recommend the i3-4130 (or any dual core) to be paired with the R9 280 because the CPU will bottleneck the GPU. The user suggested the AMD FX-6300 hex-core instead, but I have been told multiple times that the i3 would be better for gaming thanks to it's stronger cores. Has anyone with an R9 280 experienced similar bottlenecking? Am I better off switching to the AMD processor or will the i3 do fine? OR, should I save for some sort of i5 Quad core instead?

Hey all, I have a dilema. I have a v3-571g (4 gig RAM version, not 8 gig RAM), love the thing, has served me well. But one problem that has been bugging me recently. SIZE, WEIGHT and HEAT. Performance of this, awesome, this machine, awesome but the size has just got to me. I'm about to build a pc in a Silverstone RVZ01 so i can take my pc to my friends house and will render this lappy useless as the position of this lappy is it is portable enough to take to my friends (what my PC will now replace) but not portable enough to sit on the couch. So I wanted to replace this lappy with something of equal power but like an ultrabook but everything is do damn expensive. I need help to find a lappy that fills these requirements. Dual Core 2.0GHZ upwards SSD GTM 630M or above Any help is thankful

I was interested if anybody knew of a site that actually kept track of the amount of cores a program or game could use. Doesn't just have to be for games. I think that would be very useful.

Everyone knows that the intense, advanced modern games of today require huge amounts of processing power in order to offer the incredible, immersive and cinematic gameplay experiences that they offer. If you didn't realise when I said 'cinematic', that was satire. This is a guide I'm making to show that FarCry 4 can be run on a dual core system with more than sufficient performance that offers a good gameplay experience. The first step in this process is to get the game working. In order to do this you'll need to inject a .dll into the FC4 executable when it starts. I'll link all files at the bottom of this post. Now, with the files you have downloaded and unzipped, you should see this: Run the 'Extreme Injector V3' executable. If it isn't already, you'll need to organise the .dll files in this order specifically, which you can do by adding and removing them: Then, just run FarCry 4 and hit 'Inject' the moment you start it. You need to do it while the splash screen is still up, otherwise it might not work. Once it works, the game should be running! Woo! Now, for the performance numbers I get on my PC, which I would consider a mid-to-low spec system. As a forenote, I did consider using Fraps, but decided against it and just kept an eye on my numbers as I played as to give general, but more realistic numbers. My specs: CPU: Penitum G3258 @ 4.4ghz GPU: Asus GTX 760 DCUII OC @ Stock (Not a good OC'er) I'm also using a 1080p monitor (Asus VE248H) For the different scenarios, I just looked at a wall for 'looking at a wall', then I ran in circles and jumped around a small outpost for 'Running around', and for 'In a firefight' I ran into an enemy outpost and went full retard with an assault rifle. I also didn't test the high and very-high settings as I didn't think it was really worth it. I don't think there's enough of a difference between med, high and very-high to worry about it. Low: (Game looks like absolute ass, no AA, near no shadows.) -Looking at a wall: About 61-62 -Running around: Mostly high 40's (Pretty much the same as med settings.) -In a firefight: Mid 40's. Med: (looks alright now, still no AA) -Looking at a wall: High 50's -Running around: Around 50, down to mid 40's. -In a firefight: High 30's to low 40's. Ultra: (Looks darker and more bland, plus the HBAO+ contrast is too damn high.) -Looking at a wall: Low to mid 50's -Running around: Average around the 40's, dips down to mid 30's. -In a firefight: 30's with the occasional dip into 20's. So, it seems that as you increase in quality, the max fps lowers by a few fps, but the amount that the fps dips during more intense scenes increases substantially. Thanks to @SkilledRebuilds from whom I borrowed the multifile link from. Turns out that Skidrow actually made this crack, so kudos to him for that. More of his cracks and other such things over at his site, which is about his (Skidrows) game cracks, which you might even call SkidrowGames. Which could be a network (.net) site. #TechnicallynotbreakingtheCOC

So I have decided it's about time to rebuild my trusty but bulky pfSense box (pictured at the bottom of this post) and I need some help on picking and finding new parts, I'm looking to go as low power consumption as possible and for it to run reasonably cool as this thing is going to live in my bedroom along side lots of other networking equipment and a server or two that runs 24/7. I want to build it into a 1U rackmount case that will use a ITX motherboard, I have already seen the case I would like to use HERE from X-Case UK and I came across THIS cheap intel dual port gigabit PCI-E 4x server NIC on ebay to use in the build. My main problem right now is finding a motherboard / CPU to use, I am looking for something ITX that will fit in the case, Probably something with a Atom processor built onto the board and that has a PCI-E 4x slot so I can use my PCI-E dual port network card, It needs to have two onboard ethernet ports as well really so I can have my total of 4 ethernet ports. My configuration is going to be two WAN connections (that will sometimes become three!), With one LAN connection. Currently my WAN connections are made up from 2x BT ADSL2+ connections at about 10Mbps download 1Mbps upload each (Soon going to become dual BT Infinity FTTC / VDSL2 connections at 80Mbps down 20Mbps up each when it is available here) And the third WAN is only online sometimes as that is my mobile phone 4G data via tethering (I have an unlimited data plan including tethering with Three UK, My 4G gets about 50Mbps download 10Mbps upload so it really speeds up those big steam game downloads and youtube video uploads!) As long as the system can handle about 300Mbps throughput it should be fine for now and foreseeable future use. According to the pfsense hardware page for 101-500 Mbps throughput it needs 'newer desktop hardware and no less than a modern Intel or AMD CPU clocked at 2.0 GHz'. So I would have thought most dual core Intel Atom CPU's could handle this fairly well as my current old core 2 duo box never goes over 10% CPU load. PACKAGES: I run Squid, pfBlocker, HAVP Antivirus and a OpenVPN Server at current. BUDGET: I don't really have a set price, Under £100 ideally but I could spend more if something came up that was perfect. I did see THIS MOTHERBOARD on ebay that has 4x onboard gigabit ethernet ports and a Atom D525 1.8Ghz dual core hyper threading CPU that looks interesting but I have never had any experience with the 'Jetway' brand before and do not know if the onboard ethernet ports are any good / Will work with pfsense. Here is my old / current pfSense box made from random hardware, Its current specs are: Old, Battered & Broken Dell Inspiron 530 Case Crappy Random 'ARIANET' 460W Power Supply Intel Core 2 Duo 6420 2.14Ghz Processor Dell / Foxconn G33M02 Motherboard 2GB (2x 1GB) DDR2 Random Memory Seagate 120GB SATA Hard Drive (Super overkill - Hardly anything on it) Expansion cards, Top to bottom: 10/100/1000Mb HP PCI-E 1x Server Ethernet Card 10/100Mb Unknown Random PCI-E 1x Ethernet Card 10/100Mb Sweex PCI Ethernet Card 10/100Mb Sweex PCI Ethernet Card Any help, Suggestions, Recommendations or ideas are much appreciated! Hey all, I have a question for you all. For a budget gaming build what do you think is better? 1) A Quad Core AMD ( AMD 760K) 2) A Dual Core Intel ( Intel Core i3-4150) The most cpu demanding game im going to be playing is either Arma 3 or Battlefield 4 Im also trying to keep the price as low as possible. (Note: This will be paired with a r7 260x) Thanks for the help in advance

AMD A6-5400K 3.6GHz Dual-Core CPU APU I am a new member to these forums and I would like to hear from you what you guys think of this processor. I am building a budget build and a friend of mine has recommended getting a processor with integrated graphics to save instead of buying a dedicated video card. I expect it to run games on medium to low graphics, but I am starting the switch from console to PC gaming and I'm on a tight budget. It runs Radeon HD 7540D graphics, which I'm not sure if that is good or not so good. It is a dual core, which I know is better than just a single core and is required for some games. I saw a racing game played on it with 28-30 FPS on medium settings while running Fraps. I don't really have much experience with computer technology other than what I read from Maximum PC magazines that I borrowed from the same friend who brought me into the PC gaming scene, so I would really like for people to reply and tell me what they know about this CPU, or if someone owns or has owned this processor I would like for you to share your experiences. Thank you for your time, ~Matt

(Sorry that this is so long, didn't expect it to be <_<) Hello, I've been really frustrated since I got my new processor which is a 1045t . http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819106012 My PC model: ET1331G-03w Motherboard model: MCP61PM-GM BIOS: AMI P01-A2L I have a 430watt PSU installed and used to have a 6670 core edition installed. A friend gave me his GeForce GTX 550ti which obviously bottlenecked my computer because of my CPU. So I ended up getting this CPU without really doing research on my mobo since I didn't have knowledge on it, (but now I understand.) If you looked at my mobo you can see that it can only supports up to 89 watts. Which is just like 4-6 watts off. So I thought about underclocking my CPU but I cannot edit any of my CPU settings in my BIOS. So I'm stuck there. When I try to run AMD OverDrive I can't open it because it says "AMD OverDrive cannot detect supported AMD chipset on this computer." which I don't understand because obviously I have an AMD CPU. Unless it's not meant for it. And I also believe that my motherboard and CPU aren't compatiple since my mobo recognizes my CPU as this . . . http://puu.sh/93MWg.png "Dual-Core AMD Opteron Processor 130400 Dual- 804MHz" So then I just gave up running at 804Mhz since it was so damn slow and put back my old CPU which is a AMD Athlon II X2 235e. Anyways when I put back my old CPU I noticed that my CPU was running at 100 percent (the majority of the time) and when I went to msconfig to just check if my CPU was running on two cores and I see that it was on 1, I tried changing it and I see that only one core is available. I went to Device Manager to see if both of my CPU cores are on there, AND THERE WERE. So now I'm just really confused and now I really need help. Yeah, that's pretty much it. Thanks.

Hey guuuuuuys! This is Sauron! Jokes aside, ToT posted this video on this new barebone (the version they reviewed was complete already though, hence the "plus") which imo looks pretty cool, so if you're into this type of things it might be what you're looking for. It's still a bit expensive considering it doesn't have a dedicated gpu, although I'm not sure where they could have fit one considering the size of it. Still, I don't think you can get anything more for this price in this form factor. The funny thing is that it looks nice and it has slightly better specs that that "cheap" iMac we've seen come out recently, but it's 500$, meaning you spare 600$ compared to the mac, 400 if you need to buy a screen for it... considering the argument most people held against me when i said the imac was overpriced was that you can't really get a comparable desktop in so little space with such good design, I brought proof that you can! I wouldn't buy it because I like big, price/performance friendly tower pcs, so this isn't for me, but it might be for you...

So yeah, what I said. They have the same architecture as i5s (which are the best for gaming) but they are 2 cores 4 threads only + locked. also, if I remember correctly they do not have turbo so they suffer at stock clock speed all the time. Amd has offerings (for cheaper) like the athlons (steamroller athlons seem very attractive btw) the fx 6300 and now with the price drop even the fx 8320..

My Asus laptop runs at 55o at IDLE. Is there any way I can speed up the cooling fan or make it run cooler?

Hi, I was looking at buying a new laptop mainly for casual use, but I want to be able to use it for gaming and light productivity tasks when my desktop computer is not available. Saying this I'm still in school so I don't have much money to spend, and i was going to get the computer built to order by pcspecialist.co.uk The difference between the Cpus is £79 (around $135 USD), and it's between an i5 4210M and the i7 4710MQ. I will post the full specs of the computer below, I plan on upgrading the RAM in the future and adding an additional storage drive. (Don't hate on me about battery life etc or the performance of the components below, I have assessed the rest myself and established that they will work for me in this use case and budget) How much difference would you say is there between these CPU's baring in mind that the i5 is just hyper threaded whereas the i7 is true quad core?
