ok well it's 1AM rn so ignore any typos or anything of that kind. so uh I have some old PC's laying around that I wanna turn into a media pc to just stream some movies on my home network and stuff and I have 2 options for that. a Dell Optiplex 3020 with a dual core i3-4130 with a TDP of 54W and a Dell Precision T1500 with a quad core i7-860 with a TDP of 95W. so my question(s) was; whatd be better? a quad core or a dual core? im kinda leaning towards the i3 cause 1. the i3 is newer and supports hyperthreading and such. 2. it has a lower TDP which might give me the option to put a passive cooler on it for maximum quietness or something but a reason I thought the i7 might be the smarter choice is cause it has more cores... even though it is a lot older and runs on a slower architecture and stuff... so what are y'all's opinions? the i3? or the i7?

As a programmer i came across the same question in the last couple of years: "time to test it deployed" and either i used AWS or other deploy web services depending on the project. I had the idea to turn one of my old laptops into a in-house server, so i`m tryna get some answers. Specs: Dell latitude D620 CPU: Intel Core Duo T2500, 2.00Ghz Memory: 2.0GB, DDR2-667 GPU: Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 950 HD: Samsung 500GB 7200rpm SATA3 Is it worth it to turn it into a server? I`d like to hear so pros and cons. Has anyone tried this before? If so how does it run? yay or nay?

Hey guys! Hope everyone is having a happy holidays! This holiday I have been looking at a computer upgrade on the end of year sales going on and wanted to get another 16gb of ram to fill up the slots. After some research ive found out that quad core doesnt run well on AM4. Would this extra 16gb of ram (Putting me at 32GB afterwards) be an upgrade, be worse or would i even notice it at all? Im currently running a MSI MPG x570, Ryzen 5 3600,G.Skill Trident 16GB 3200MHZ, Gigabyte GTX 1080, 850w PSU, 1TB NVME, 4TB HDD and a 2TB SSD. Was planning to buy another g.skill trident 2x8gb kit. Not sure if its needed to know but I stream daily for about 4-6 hours after work everyday and play shooters like CoD, Overwatch and Mobas like HOTS & League. I would like to stay above 144Hz and figured this RAM would help with video editing and graphics design. Thanks in advanced ! ?

Hi! I've had some fun lately with lga 775 chips (1.5 vcore kind of fun). Why dual core cpus have E in their name? Q obviously stands for quad but what stands for E?

Umm hii everyone. So as the title suggests, my future build (i think later this year, depends on the budget) will have a GTX 1060 3GB paired with a Pentium G5400. I know the CPU is not that strong but, you know, budget. So will it be a decent pair or will it lead to bottleneck? (I'm only doing 1080p gaming btw and no VR and also I don't really care if I can't max out the graphics settings.)

First of all my rig: CPU: Intel Pentium G4400 MOBO: Gigabyte H110M DS2, DDR3 model GPU: AMD Radeon R7 250 1GB GDDR5 RAM: DDR3 1x8GB 1600MHz HDD: Seagate 320GB 7200RPM PSU: Seasonic Focus+ Gold 550W When i got this rig 2 years ago CS:GO was running with minor frame drops, today i cant play FFA DM, I tried everyting from this guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Wmpgux8wT0 but nothing helped, I know that CS:GO isnt really good on dual cores but I would be fine with 75 fps that are somewhat stable, i play DM on 100-0 fps literally its so frustrating, same story in Fortnite I have about 80fps but when i try to use pump sometimes game even crashes, Low preset 1080p resolution with 89.9% 3d resolution. I was able to play aim botz map at 180 fps today I rarely see 120, ok i understand 3-4 major windows 10 updates have been released since i bought my pc but i lose 1/3 of performance overall not just in gaming, chrome takes at least twice more time to open etc. I'm trying to figure out what would be better deal to buy I3 8100 with b360 and 2x4GB DDR4 and leave this card but a I5 7400 with SSD and leave this ram with this mobo or maybe to buy i7 7700 but this gpu is probably not the best one to pair with this cpu ? or to buy gtx 1060 3GB I chose these as potential upgrades because in my country all of these options are about 300EUR. Btw CS:GO preset is set to low all, 2xMSAA which makes no difference when is on off or 4x, multicore rendering on and res is 1024x768. I'm not sure what should I do with this rig to get stable fps in cs:go ? maybe the best option is to put it under hydraulic press and get some money from youtube to buy 10k machine

Ok so I've been doing some research and It's very intriguing to me IPC in general. We have Quad core processors topping 150 in single core performance (for cinebench). Well what if you had something like 300-400 Single core performance on something like a dual core and have the 150 on a quad core? What difference will it make from games and other such things (again going from cinebench)

Today, as my computer was getting hot, I decided to check the temperature of the CPU by installing open hardware monitor. It tells me that the temperature for both the cores is 70°C. I'm definitely sure this is not normal.

Hello, I currently have an i3 6100. I lately have thought about upgrading to a hexacore processor. I want to know just how much longer my current CPU could last since I currently 45-70 fps on new AAA games which don't necessarily bother me too much. While I could get a ryzen/coffee lake CPU right now, I would prefer to wait and get a cannonlake/zen 2 CPU and get much more use out of my current CPU.

This post isn't a troll or anything but with Linus' recent video covering the law of diminishing return by comparing the G4560 to the 7820X, I came to a strange realisation. The Celerons, in terms of specifications, are actually the best value processors around. I mean think about it, 1/2 the cores of an i5, 1/2 the cache of an i5, with similar clockspeeds as lower end i5s like the 6400, but with a much lower price tag. I mean the G3930 is like $35. That is 5 times less expensive than an i5 6400, but just 1/2 the performance on paper. Am I missing something here? Can somebody explain why are they so freaking cheap? Just to be clear, I am not saying Celerons can do much, 2 cores are just inseffiecent in 2017, albeit, 2 strong cores. It's just really strange that, they're that cheap.

What do you think will perform 'better' in games, a Dual core running at 4GHz or a Quad core running at 2GHz? just a little thought I had, I think the dual core will have a higher frame rate, just by a smidge.

So I have been slowly pricing together a PC to replace my work computer (accountant stuff) and had the realization that I may be able to save some $$ and get a dual core w/ HT (Pentium G4560) instead of a locked I5 (i5-7500). Now, according to my boss I do want a quad core, since it will help a lot in some work tasks I normally do. But I am wondering will a Dual core w/ HT (4 threads) be comparable to some degree to a quad core (4 threads) when doing multi-core workloads or am I missing something?

Hey everyone! So I'm going to be building my first PC in the next couple weeks and I have a few final questions. I plan on going with a i3 6xxx, I just dont know which is most worth the money. Besides breaking it down to USD/gHz, I cant see a way to compare these CPU's. Maybe someone with more experience in PC modding would know any other reasons to go with the 6300 or the 6320. I could be overthinking things but I just want to be sure I'm covering all my bases. You should also know that I plan on purchasing an i7 6700k within the next year or so and will sell whichever i3 I get now. By the way, the point of this build is to have a decent gaming pc that can run CS:GO (preferably well enough to be able to use a 144hz monitor) and other "non-super intensive" games (eg. Crysis) Here's a link to my parts list. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/sLCKP6 I have already purchased the GPU, PSU, and CPU cooler. Current CPU price's from Amazon and Newegg (All prices in USD) Amazon 6100 - $120.98 6300 - $149.99 6320 - $155.45 Newegg 6100 - $124.99 6300 - $149.99 6320 - $164.99 USD/gHz 6100(3.7gHz) - $32.70/gHz 6300(3.8gHz) - $39.47/gHz 6320(3.9gHz) - $39.86/gHz Any and all feedback is much appreaciated! Thanks! Matt

My friend recently picked up a Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3LR with a E8400 in it off a mate and I was looking around for a cheap way for him to increase it's horse power in relation to gaming. I can get a Q8400 for $40 but all the writing I can find about it seams to say that the E8400 is better despite only having 2 cores. Is this because at the time these chips were new you didn't need a quad core or is the E8400 actually better? The games he plays are all new enough to take advantage of quad cores.

Hi Everyone! I'm just thinking if should I buy the Sapphire R9 380 with Seasonic G-550 550W 80Plus Gold for my old PC? Will there be any disadvantage aside from the Athlon X2's bottleneck the 380? I really don't mind if it will not be able to run the latest AAA games since i will upgrade the MOBO+PROC+RAM later on. I just want to buy the GPU and PSU first, because of reasons :). Here's my current build: Athlon II X2 240 (2.8 GHz) MSI k9n6pgm2-v2 + 2GB DDR2 Orion 500w Asus GT420

Q6600 with 750ti, core i3 4160 or g3258 for gaming?
Guest posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Hey guys! I am looking to upgrade my build from Core 2 duo 3.00ghz e8400 and dell motherboard. I already got a new case, powersupply(EVGA 500W 80+ bronze), hard drive, DVD drive, windows and all I need now is to upgrade processor, motherboard and graphics card from gigabye gt630 2gb graphics card(2 years used). I have a budget of $180 and I am pretty strict on it. Right now I am thinking of getting an i3 4160 with asus h81m-e, 8gb ddr3, g3258 with h81m-e or asus b85m-g, 8gb ddr3 or if i just upgrade to q6600, I'll just have to pay 30 bucks more as i have suitable motherboard for it and get a 750ti. However if i get and i3, I won't have money to buy graphics card but will not have to change the motherboard or ram if i wanna upgrade. With g3258 it would cost around 140-150$ and it's a dual core and i guess for 50-60$ i couldn't get a decent graphics card. I would be playing latest games on 900x1600p single monitor. Help me guys would the i3 4160 with gigabyte gt630 2gb a better option for gaming or core 2 quad q6600 with gtx 750ti/r7 370 a better option for gaming. Thank you for all your advice and please send a link to benchmarks if u find any! -

Will a dual core i5 bottleneck a gtx 970 strix?
VirusStorm posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
I own a macbook pro mid 2014 (I know, not the best choice) and the gpu sucks. So im going to connect a gtx 970 strix externally. here are my specs cpu: 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5 dual core (4th gen) psu: 600w thats all you need to know. My questions are 1. Will it bottleneck? I will do some overclocking 2. How well will it work with osx? Will the operating system cost me some frames? -
I was looking at the razer blade stealth's specs on razer's website http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-systems/razer-blade-stealth , and i noticed in the cpu category, was an I7 6500u. I always thought i7s were quad cores with hyper threading, but the 6500u has a dual core with hyper threading. This sounds a lot more like an i3. Is there anything special about this processor that makes it worthy of being called an I7? or did intel just call it an i7 to help out razer?
