  1. Hi, this is my first time posting in these forums. I play a lot of games ranging from the newest to very old '90s games on PC. I'm sure most of you know that Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 all have poor compatibility with games that run on x32 bit operating systems (not to mention Windows 10's shady compatibility with DirectX9 programs). In order to combat this, I would like to set up a multi boot configuration with Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows 7, and Windows 10 on a SATA III SSD. But there are a few things I'm unsure about, so I'll list my computer's specs and then proceed to point them out. Motherboard: ASUS Maximus Hero IX Z270 LGA1151 CPU: Intel Core I7 7700K Stock clock speeds GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070 8GB Overclocked RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3600mhz Storage 1: SATA SSD of negotiable capacity (currently own a 128GB, but am going to get a bigger one, perferably 1TB) Storage 2: Seagate Ironwolf 10TB 7200RPM 256MB Cache Optical Drive: Yes Now, the first thing i'm concerned about is attempting to run Windows XP, a x32 bit operating system, with a computer with 16GB of RAM. x32 bit can only support 4GB of RAM, but i don't have a 4GB or less stick, i have two 8GB sticks. Would this stop me in my tracks right there? Or would it work, but only use up to 4GB of ram on 1 stick Is it even compatible with DDR4 RAM or Z270 mobos? Also, is Windows XP and Windows 98 even compatible with being installed on an SSD? (I avoided NVME for compatibility issues with Windows 7, though easily fixable with a patch i heard) Also, i don't know anything really, about Windows 98 and 16bit operating system compatibility or requirements. Also i have no clue if the CPU is too new and incompatible with older operating systems. i know Microsoft blocked Kaby Lake processors on Windows 7 in an effort to get more people to "update" to windows 10, but it's easily fixed with an unofficial patch (which i'm currently using) because they should work just fine with Windows 7, but MS got shady. I'd like to throw in Ubuntu if at all possible, as an added bonus. It's not a huge want, but just that. an added bonus. Also, would Windows XP and Windows 98 even support video output through DisplayPort or HDMI? Would I be better off attempting to set up Virtual Machines for XP and 98? If so, or if not, please explain. Thank you for taking the time to check out my conundrum/plan. All input is greatly appreciated!
  2. I have dual booted my laptop with ubuntu 16.04 and windows 7,whenever i use ubuntu it works fine but when i want to change over to windows 7,the bootloader will not work properly first it will show a pinky screen with white lines running across the screen and then an option to choose between win7 and ubuntu after that when win7 finally loads, it will be in that loading state for 3-4 mins,i have to restart 2-3 times for windows to properly boot, what should i do so that win7 and ubuntu both properly boots up. ps: i used eacy bcd for dual booting
  3. Hi everyone. I would like to dual boot Windows 10 and Windows Server 2012 R2 on my HP Stream (laptop). I've never dual booted a machine before. I have genuine copies of both operating systems. Could someone give me some good guidance on where to begin? Thank you for any help in advance.
  4. Due to Google's changing API you might be having problem during installation of Grive , i wanted to tried dual boot with chromium os. does anyone have tried? i have kali linux and wanted to install chromium os but didnt find people who did that. all guides are dual booting chromebook with ubuntu etc. Any help is appreciated. thanks
  5. Hijo. I'm sick and disgusted about Windows and the total **** Microsoft are doing with there costumers privacy. We are no longer there costumers.. But the produkt.... I'm not a terrorist don't treat me like one... Do anyone know about something that make it easy to have the OS not even think twice about there being a second OS inside of the system without pulling the SATA/Power connectors every single time? A task I feel the BIOS at this point had made possible. But no, Insted Vitrual machines are the solution? Why? Background to this. And read if you think that I don't know the obvius ways to solve this privacy like Topic... It's down to the hardrive connections here.. Changing BIOS settings every single time to disable networking and outher hardrives only to boot into a safe and peasfull OS invirument is ridiculous. I don't whant my OS to sniff in my shit sending it wherever it likes. And even less on outher OS inside my PC. And vitrual machines are not perfect performance wise. And still the host OS have FULL control of everything. The user have no control if the OS is made to ignore it's imputs... Only hardware or full on software control like BIOS allow the user to control what it got access to. (in theory) And Windows 10 + my IT studying made this clear to me. But no ide where to start. :C And for the record. I don't trust Linux or Mac OS. But I like to point my finger at Windows 10 due to it being bundled with spying optimisation... Windows 7 and above I have trusted allot more vs the programs I install.. Now it's the opposite.... 99% of the time.. Trying to find stuff like this on Google only have me find tutorials and post about chaning hardrives in Xbox or PS's.... Dual Boot still is on the OS level... Like motherboards don't offer this stuff. BIOS don't. Where to I turn? For all I know Google maby are blocking me from even learning about this. But that's to dark to even consider. Any batman caves running government grate firewalls and VPN's on there vitrual machine to read this tread? Give me the privacy I paid for when buying OS my lord! Let a scrub like me not having to go offline for the rest of my life! Let me be free! How am I going to last without my YouTube! Or the Steam DRM forsing me to go online to play my games! Remeber the times we had this floppy things. And even fast CD stuff with glorius games/programs without privacy leaks....
  6. Hey guys! I somehow managed to get Remix os to start dual booting into my system so i get the windows 10 dual boot screen and now i cant stop it help?
  7. Hey guys. I've never used a Mac before, but I think for someone who considers themselves a tech geek, it would be fairly biased for me to judge one OS over the other before having tried one. Macbooks are frickin expensive, I don't have the cash to buy one. I have a sweet rig, I'd like to go the dual booting way. I have ran it for a good ten minutes in a VM, but was unable to get reasonable performance and graphical stability to make it worth learning. Heck, the resolution it ran in made it too small to function properly and there's no possible way to fix it. So here's my rig. -i7-4790k. -Asus Z97M Plus -Corsair Vengeance Pro 1866 -XFX 7970 First, is it possible, and second, is it practical? What are your experiences with this and what can I look out for? I'm not advocating piracy, nor admitting to it, but chances are I am not purchasing the software even if that means dropping the idea or obtaining it by other means. I'm pretty determined. Thanks.
  8. Hello so I'm getting this laptop and I would like to learn how install and dual boot Ubuntu. Thanks.
  9. hi everyone, i'm trying to do a dual boot sort of thing with a seperate harddrive and graphics card in the same tower as the main machine, the problem i'm having is that i can't output to the display unless i'm using the gpu in the top pcie 16x slot, not even from the igpu in my 4790k, anyone know a work around for this?
  10. I'm currently dual booting my Asus X550JX laptop with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and Windows 10. The PC that is streaming the content from my laptop is running Windows 7. When my X550 is booted into Windows I can stream all my content without a hitch; this tells me it cannot be hardware related and it has to be some setting in my Ubuntu. I have installed caffeine to ensure my laptop does not go to sleep or turn off the screen when I need it to. The problem when sharing from my Ubuntu is that it will stream a movie or series for a few minutes (usually 10minutes+) then it will stop the video. When I play the video and go to the same place where I was it will stop the video again. The only way to watch the whole video is to skip past the point in the video where it "stops". Another problem is that it buffers which it never does when my laptop is booted to Windows. I have also tried different media players on my media machine but that does not seem to solve this problem. All my videos are saved on my Windows partition that I have mounted at start up to give me ownership on the drive in order to share the folder over samba. This is the line I added into /etc/fstab /dev/sda4 /mnt/OS auto user,exec,uid=slugger,gid=slugger,x-gvfs-show,umask=002 0 2 in /etc/samba/smb.conf [Videos] path = /mnt/OS/Users/Slugger7/Videos available = yes valid users = slugger read only = no browsable = yes public = yes writeable = no I have thought about spin down time of my hard drive but I have no idea on how to change that or to test if it could actually be that. I have noticed that when I am working on my Ubuntu then it does not cause problems. Any ideas welcome.
  11. Hi there! I'm upgrading a laptop for a friend of mine who has some unique requests/needs for security. I plan on a 960GB SSD in it, and he wants dual-boot Windows 10 with one of the OS's completely cut off from the internet. He wants to keep it as clean and secure as possible. It will have access to his current confidential files. But he also needs a folder or partition that the two OS's can share so he can transfer some files when necessary. I plan on increasing security to that folder (anti-virus scans, etc) and educating him on security measures he needs to take. But aside from that shared area we don't want the two OS's to be able to access each other in any way. In fact, he won't be keeping files in that shared folder permanently - it's only there to facilitate transfers between the OS's. I also plan to introduce him to LastPass since he's so risk-averse, and really everyone should be using a password manager these days anyway. We're also exploring options for long-term storage and access of the literally tens of thousands of confidential files and images he needs to keep for his business. He needs to store a ton but have the ability to access it from his phone or laptop remotely (where 6 TB of data just won't go). It's a mom-and-pop operation (literally), and I'm their free friend tech support, so solutions that require frequent management are out of the question. I'm looking for input on keeping the OS's 'firewalled' from each other (if that's the right term in this scenario). Or if there's a better way to effectively do the same thing, I'm all ears. I'd also like opinions on personal cloud storage (WD or Seagate, etc) vs a monthly subscription to OneDrive or equivalent (who makes it easy to store files off-site while being easily accessible). Dropbox and Google Drive don't seem to make it easy to off-load files (cloud-stored and not locally-stored simultaneously) without having to change file settings every time you do it. An option for automatic sorting of files would be welcome as well so he can keep things organized (which isn't his strong suit). I would probably also make an archive backup of all his files at the start of this process that's kept in an off-site location in case of personal cloud failure. Thanks in advance for your help!
  12. I need to install Ubuntu for college reasons, and I'd like to setup a dual boot machine. My current PC uses a SSD for Windows/Drivers/Programs and a HDD for Media/Less used programs. Can I partition my HDD and install Ubuntu on it? Will it interfere in anyway with Windows? Can I get it to dual-boot or will I need to choose the boot drive in BIOS everytime I want to switch OSes?
  13. Hello! I recently decided to dual boot my PC with windows 10 and Ubuntu (windows 10 was the original operating system) but after I finished the process and rebooted the PC grub boot loader only gives me the option to start Ubuntu. In case I dual booted incorrectly here are the steps took. 1: created a partition 2: made a bootable USB with ubuntu 16.04 installed 3: Booted from the USB and used Ubuntu's "install alongside windows" option But now when ever Grub boot loader shows up the only options I'm given are Ubuntu, advanced options for ubuntu and system setup. I'll appreciate any help I can get, I have no idea how to work linux so I'm completely lost on this one.
  14. I Am Wondering If You Can Dual Boot Windows 10 With Windows 8.1 Embedded Standard? I Don't Want To Lose All My Data
  15. Right, I need helpz; I have Windows 10 insider preview installed on my PC, however, I wanted to install windows 7 alongside it; so I installed an extra HDD in my computer to install it on; So now, I have a 120GB SSD with Windows 10 installed, as my primary OS A 2TB HDD for media/document storage And a recently installed 160GB HDD for Windows 7; Now is where my problem starts; When I try to install Windows 7 onto my 160 GB HDD, I get the following message; *Check Attached Image* All i want to do is simply dual boot Windows 7 alongside Windows 10; any help would be appreciated! I have checked Google, but I couldn't find anything to help; It said something about BIOS settings, so I had a look, but I couldn't find anything that would help? The 160GB HDD is in SATA port 4 if that makes any difference whatsoever..? I don't imagine it would? Thanks!! 16. hi there I was wondering if I should use Linux on my new computer or windows. I was also thinking about possibly dual booting. however I have never used Linux and don't know anything about linux
  17. I have Windows 10 and Ubuntu 15.04 set up in dual boot. They are both running off of a 120GB SSD. I have mounted a 1TB Western Digital drive on Linux perfectly fine, however the same drive does not show up in Windows. It is not registered in disk management or the device manager. EDIT: Here is Windows: You can see my ssd and my other 2TB drive. http://i.imgur.com/RtXoFh2.png in Linux: Here is my 1TB HDD, working perfectly fine in linux, mounted as an NTFS partition(not available in Windows) http://i.imgur.com/UWIxjKr.png EDIT 2: I unplugged/ replugged it, reinstalled both OSs(for unrelated reasons), and it works now. Thanks to all that helped.
  18. I been messing with Windows since 3.1, I have dual booted operating systems tons in the past, so this isn't my first time around. What is new to me is UEFI and SecureBoot and all this other trash, that is making my life at the moment a living hell. (Ok, slight exaggeration) What is the easiest route? At this point IDK even care, if its gonna cost me money for software or a new drive I just want it working, (I'm ok spending up to a couple hundred bucks if needed) So here is what I have. Asus Maximus Hero VIII 6700k Windows 10 - Currently installed on a Samsung 950 (m.2) All I want is to be able to install Windows 7, without having to wipe out my current Windows 10 installation. I tried to install Windows 7 on a new partition - Nope I tried installing Windows 7 on a new drive - Nope I have not tried taking out the m.2 and attempting to install Windows 7 on a new drive, because I am not 100% sure that won't mess up W10 when I reinstall the m2.(Though I "think" this might be the correct way to go.)
  19. I am trying to decide which root I should go in building a cheap (> $800) computer that both runs El Capitan (or Yosemite), and Windows 10. I am thinking that I either build a hackintosh, or I buy an old (2008-2012) mac pro desktop computer. Odiously there are advantages and disadvantages to both of these. I would be inclined to go with a hackintosh although I don't own any Mac OS running things at the moment so that would be a problem when setting it up.
  20. Well.. This is embarrassing; I attempted to dual boot windows 7 alongside my windows 10 insider preview install.. it worked, but then it stopped working for no apparent reason, anyhow, i went ahead and just formatted the drive i installed windows 7 on because I couldn't boot into it anymore as i didn't get the option to, but after formatting the drive; i get the option to load windows 7 or 10.. Obviously, the windows 7 option is redundant now, because the drive was formatted; but im still getting the option to load 7 every time i boot? This wouldn't be an issue if i had windows 10 at the top and it just booted into it automatically, but windows 7 is at the top; and to make it worse, my usual keyboard requires drivers to work, so to press down and enter to load windows 10 on every boot, i need a cheap keyboard plugged in, and, I know 2 screens looks great on a desktop, but; 2 keyboards doesn't have the same effect  I just want my computer to boot like normal again Any help would be appreciated. Cheers! Also; the people on the Google said i need a disk, which i dont have.. 21. So I am attempting to install Ubuntu 15.10 on my laptop along with windows 10 however the installation freezes at random points. Ive tried using UEFI, UEFI with CSM, and legacy boot mode. Ive disabled secure boot. I have no idea why this is happening. Laptop is MSI GE72 2QF.
  22. Hi, I have built a pc with one SSD and two HDD's. I want to install windows on the SSD and then ubuntu on one of the HDDs. I would like to know how I would go about doing this in such a way that I get the GRUB selection menu at startup. Also what would happen to the third drive? Would it be used by both or just one of the operating systems? Im not too familiar with partitioning so I'm not sure how to make it so that Ubuntu takes the entire HDD and leave the second HDD for windows. I know that I must first install windows on the SSD. After doing that what do I do next? Assume the SSD is sda and the two HDDs are sdb and sdc. Thanks in advance for your help!
  23. Hello LinusTechTips fans, This is my first PC build : http://pcpartpicker.com/user/TheSabby/saved/FNdYcf I intend to later upgrade my CPU cooling to the H110i and add a GTX 980Ti. However, I have some questions about the build as it currently stands. First: I have two HDD's and an SSD. I intend to install windows on the SSD but I would also like to dual boot Ubuntu as I prefer it for programming. My question is, should I install it on the SSD too alongside windows to benefit from the speed or should I install it on one of the HDD's. Second: Is my choice of motherboard good? My usage is mainly programming and gaming. I don't intend to do any content creation or streaming. Just gaming and programming. Assuming I have a GTX 980Ti, will my motherboard hold up? Third: The case. I just want to know if this case can fit all of these components and whether or not it will be hard to build in for a first timer like myself. Any tips are appreciated! Thanks in advance for your help!
  24. Hello everyone, i am interested in getting into the linux distrobutions but i dont want to lose windows, i have already tried VM but it is very slow. i give it nearly 7 GB of ram, 500MB of graphical memory, and i even give it both of my cores but it still runs very slow, not to mention i also stumble apon ALOT of resolution issues and i have the resolution the size of a phone, so i would rather dual boot linux without having windows running in the backround. I would also like to mention i am not familiar with bootloaders in any way and i don't know how to install them.
  25. Guys, I had to install Ubuntu on my system due to project work. So had thought of dual booting Windows 7+ubuntu. But after several tries i was not able to create a partition for ubuntu and also the partition i created via Windows disk management tool. that Partition was also not visible and i was not able to install ubuntu. Luckily i Had spare 500gb HDD lying around and i installed ubuntu on that system and now when i boot my pc.. it directly goes into windows and not into ubuntu MBR i.e GRUB(i guess after reading several articles over internet). My main Question is now how can i make my PC's boot loader to recognize that there are 2 OS in the system and and to give me the option to select 1 on every bootup. Please help me over here....
